WIP

I'm working on the first chapter of the fic detailing my Inquisitor's time during Veilguard, and I'm so chill about this.

Spoilers under the cut:

Mahvir barely made it to the end of the letter, and before he could sink to the ground, Dorian closed the distance to cradle him in his arms.  His legs gave out anyway, but Dorian had no qualms with sitting on the floor, not when his partner was sobbing so hard he could scarcely breathe.  There was plenty in the letter to worry about. After exploring the Crossroads and learning Solas’ true identity, Mahvir abandoned his religion and spent countless years searching for true accounts of the Evanuris. He only knew a little, but from that, he was certain that they would burn Thedas to the ground if necessary. 

None of that compared to losing Varric. 

The Inquisitor had faced many losses in his life.  More than anyone should reasonably endure. His mind and heart had never healed from the loss of Clan Lavellan nearly a decade ago, and each soldier lost in battle or friend stolen from his grasp only deepened the wound.  Varric’s death was the most recent and painful, for Harding was right: The two men had become brothers after all their shared adventures. 

“My love,” Dorian’s voice was fraught with unshed tears, “Ir abelas, ma lath.”  

At some point, Dorian had scooped his unconsolable lover in his arms and carried him into the sitting room.  He’d been cocooned within a nest of blankets as Dorian attempted in vain to wipe the river of tears from his freckled cheeks. He cried until his voice was hoarse, until all he could do was croak and sob into his husband’s shoulder. Dorian cried too, eventually, but his tears were silent as they fell into Mahvir’s chestnut hair. Nellie didn’t join them, and Mahvir tried more than once to return to the kitchen, where she undoubtedly imagined the dwarf, who used to read her bedtime stories and sneak her sweets, as another body on the pyre. 

Yet each time his foot touched the floor, his leg would wobble, and Dorian would lower him back onto the sofa for the next wave of grief-stricken tears. Mahvir had a horrible habit of imagining what everyone thought before they died. Were they scared? Were they alone? Were they in pain? Was he?  The thoughts sent him into a freefall, and when he finally hit rock bottom, the impact would result in a broken heart.

My first run was with a Qunari Mercar, Zea, and finding out that they were trapped in the Fade for weeks by the team's time had me feeling all sorts of ways. They and Lucanis hadn't fully acknowledged what they had together, so tada feelings art. I imagine their reunion was much more tearful and cuddle-centric than what we got in game: crying, constant touches to affirm this was real, that Lucanis was there, that Zea was back.

It hurt my heart so good.

Something that I feel like is missing from inquisition that origins, da2, and veilguard had was a moment where it really hit home that the powers in thedas were really fucked up. The "like dogs, shianni" scene from origins lives in my head rent free along with brosca holding leske after he betrays them. Saving the runaway mages in da2 only to have them show up again (and tranquil) in the gallows. Choosing to save Treviso and seeing all the shadow dragons dead and hung by the new government. I don't know that I had a moment like that in any part of inquisition so I'm curious if anyone had a moment that resonated like that?
