Free the Renfields from confinement! They have done nothing wrong in their lives your honor! (Well besides the whole ‘forced to serve under a vampire and them being placed into an asylum and addicted to eating bugs, or human flesh AND bugs in Penny Dreadful Renfield case) BECAUSE LOOK AT THEM!!!! Look at how sad they are, trapped and mistreated! Look at these sad guys and tell me you wouldn’t immediately bust them out? CAUSE I WOULD!!!!

I do think that 1977 Dracula has the absolute funniest lizard fashion scene of them all (23:00) like. I don't care that it's obviously just a camera put on the ground and tilted to seem that it's vertical with no regard to gravity and the cape, etc, it's 1977, whatever. But why on Earth did they have Louis Jordan doing the worm??? Like the slowest possible movement from him, which just makes the effects look worse??? And again, it's not about the effects, I don't know why they didn't have him do a inhuman little scuttle??? Inhuman little scuttles don't need any special effects!! Theater kids have been capable of inhuman and unnerving little scuttles since the first age of man!! Like. Baffling choice. I would have loved to know the rationale.

#maybe louis jordan couldn't scuttle?#Like he had some kind of injury that prevented scuttling??#dracula daily#dracula#dracula 1977#Youtube

This kina reminded me of an Audio my gf send me a while back
And me being me I made a shit post out of it.
( obviously I don’t know how нп ends but a girl can dream)
Anyway, translation/subtitles
(in case the actual ones weren’t readable (this is the first time I used the subtitles in my editing program and I kinda regret using them but I refuse to spend more time on this than I already have)):
Rey: He died of natural causes
Val: um… Rey, you pushed him off the roof of the building
Rey: um yeah, but gravity is natural

I havent even remotely finished but there is something about 1977 BBC Dracula's depiction of Jonathan getting almost attacked by the Brides that is so fucked up and haunting and I really wish future adaptions could learn from it.
(Description of assault below, if it makes you uncomfortable please don't read further)
So in the book, Jonathan asks Mina for forgiveness that he felt a strange attraction to the Brides even though they were clearly trying to bite him. But in this version, its tricky to maintain the journal keeping aspect when you can see the Brides attack him in real time. Instead they have Jonathan hallucinate or imagine Mina's presence as he's getting assaulted at the same time. Which is mindblowing the more I think about it.
When Jonathan falls asleep in the library, he actually intends to write Mina a letter telling her of his imprisonment. So hes already thinking about her as he falls asleep. Unfortunately the Brides wake him up and start flirting with him, taking the letter and making him chase around the room. Eventually they sit him down and begin petting him, and at this point, it's ambiguous if he is being "seduced" or is disturbed by them.
But as they get closer to his neck, he hears Mina's voice over and over again, and Jonathan looks up and literally sees her in the room with him! He's completely imagined her in a night gown while brushing her hair, an intimate, sexy scene that they would have shared if they were married.
How mesmerising the Brides are but frightening as well, that Jonathan gives up resisting and imagines Mina is with him instead. She's not even replacing the Brides, but she is standing across the room for him to look at and be judged by. He knows the only thing he can do is endure, and so he take comfort in Mina's memory and tries to recall her face for as long as it takes. Its just so heartbreaking.

Hi! I finished Dracula a few days ago, and I love all of the characters, but...
THE HARKERS MY BELOVED
Anyway, do you know of any adaptations that actually manage to get their relationship right?
HARKERS MY BELOVED 💕💕💕 That's awesome to hear! I'm so glad you enjoyed it and loved all the characters!
For my money (disclaimer that I haven't seen anywhere close to all of the Dracula adaptations), by far my favorite adaptation in terms of Jonathan/Mina content is Nosferatu (1922).
(That's them in my icon!) The actors have great chemistry, there are so many great moments like these showing their affection and intimacy, and while I won't spoil anything about the ending, the strength of their bond and willingness to sacrifice everything for each other is crucial to the resolution of the movie (which is somewhat different from the ending of Dracula the book.)
I've jokingly referred to Nosferatu as "Off-Brand Discount Dracula" in the past because it was made without the legal rights to the book, so the character's names are changed (Jonathan and Mina are renamed to Thomas and Ellen Hutter, for example), and it's a very condensed version of the book's story. And yet when it comes to Jonathan and Mina - and maybe even the spirit of the book as a whole - I feel like this adaptation gets it right in a way no adaptation since (at least, of the ones I've watched) really does.
Then there's the BBC miniseries Count Dracula (1977), which is probably the most accurate adaptation we've gotten overall, and certainly one that I enjoy. And Jonathan and Mina's relationship there is sweet and overall faithful to the novel:
And yet... for my money, this adaptation falls a bit flat when it comes to their relationship. It's fine, they're certainly shown to love each other and there's no Dracula/Mina nonsense as in some other adaptations. But there are so many moments and nuances from the book showing just how deep and powerful their bond is that I think this version fails to capture. I think probably the biggest moment where they drop the ball is that you don't see Jonathan holding and comforting Mina after her attack, the way he does in the book.
(On the flipside they did add a scene where Mina shoots a guy to save Jonathan in the final showdown, which was pretty cool!)
That might sound like I'm damning with faint praise, and I guess I am a bit, but this is overall a good solid adaptation and the Jonathan/Mina content we get is nice. That wouldn't be such a big deal if we had amazing adaptations that truly captured the relationships from the book, but unfortunately I don't think we've gotten any that does these characters and relationships full justice. And when it comes to Jonathan/Mina, I honestly think it's been downhill ever since Nosferatu.

I have been watching Dracula adaptations and I’ve got to say that my favourite is the 1977 BBC version. There are two major changes (Quincey and Arthur are pushed into one character, and Lucy is Mina’s sister) but apart from that everything feels very true to the books. Mina is clever and compassionate and brave. Jonathon suffers at the hands of Dracula but is also courageous and adores his wife. Van Helsing was almost perfect. He had a sincere warmth about him, as well as a sense of him always walking the line between genius and eccentric. Lucy was playful and lively and sweet. Jack was interesting and had great chemistry with Renfield, and Quincey Holmwood was very likable and actually a nice mix between the two suitors.

Hello there, dear Renfield fans!
Do you enjoy Mel Brooks' Dracula: Dead and Loving it? Do you enjoy a bit of light angst thrown at a rather ridiculous character? Would you perhaps like to help a fellow out?
Then, consider checking my fanfic collection of two one-shots and one preview of an AU I've been brainstorming up!
Yes, I know it's quite late, but I found it quite appealing as this would be normal hours for Renfield and Dracula.
Anywho, support always appreciated!
As thanks, enjoy 1977 BBC Renfield staring longingly out the window.

Wait the 1977 film fixed the Helward age gap by leaning hard into the Seward Lucy age gap and while unorthodox I kinda respect that like they said no that middle-aged man is NOT going to fuck that teenager but he IS gonna fuck that Old Man.
