What Law & Order Thursday Could Look Like Next Season as Organized Crime Moves to Peacock
What Law & Order Thursday Could Look Like Next Season as Organized Crime Moves to Peacock
Could a Criminal Intent Reboot Be the Answer?
Coming off the heels of my recent post on the current state of the franchise and the news that broke earlier this week (via The Hollywood Reporter) - Law & Order: Organized Crime has a deal being made to be renewed to run a fifth season, exclusively on Peacock for 10 episodes, the first time an L&O series will air first-run episodes on a streaming service. NBC has yet to announce any plans on the 3rd hour of Law & Order Thursday, which begs the question is: what will Thursday nights look like next season as there will likely be a void in the 3rd hour without another L&O series in its place?
NBC's newest arrivals, Found and The Irrational could potentially be scheduled on Thursdays in the new season. NBC also has two dramas, Dr. Wolf and The Hunting Party, set for next season, with two more drama pilots: Suits L.A. (spinoff from USA Network's original series, Suits) and Grosse Pointe Garden Society — in the works. Meanwhile, NBC could also acquire rights to air Canada's CityTV's version of L&O, Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent (10 episode 1st season) -- which hasn't been renewed for a 2nd season as of yet.
But from a Law & Order franchise/Wolf World perspective, this is a chance to see if there is another new iteration of the brand that can be in addition to the already robust brand as Wolf's worlds continually build themselves (the FBI franchise on CBS as well as One Chicago on NBC Wednesdays - which all are renewed for the upcoming season).
We all know pilot order spin-offs Hate Crimes (co created by Criminal Intent and SVU executive producer Warren Leight, originally posed for Peacock) and For The Defense (co created by CSI veteran executive producer Carol Mendelsohn) went to the back-burner and never became series. Also Wolf has the True Crime iteration (co creator L&O and CI executive producer Rene Balcer) of the brand that while isn't canceled in an official capacity, NBC hasn't shown recent interest in seeing it go on. Then there are 3 canceled former spinoffs; Criminal Intent (ended in 2011), Los Angeles (ended in 2011), and Trial by Jury (ended in 2005).
In interviews (one here via TV Line) and across social media, former stars Vincent D'Onofrio (Det. Robert Goren), Kathryn Erbe (Lt. Alexandra Eames), Alicia Witt (Det. Nola Falacci), and Annabella Sciorra (Lt. Carolyn Barek) as well as former executive producers Warren Leight, Julie Martin, Norberto Barba, and Michael Chernuchin - who all reunited as executive producers on SVU - have shown or voiced interest in a TV reboot of some kind. Star D'Onofrio stated on Twitter/X that the decision to reboot would ultimately be up to creator Dick Wolf but that he would love to reunite with Kathryn to do it.
The question is: would a Criminal Intent reboot be worth it for Wolf Entertainment/NBC to reboot and/or would it suffer the same fate as Organized Crime?
The answer? Yes. It would be totally be worth it for all involved. While stating the obvious, it brings our old favorites back into a new era of television and showing that element of the criminal mind and "why dunnit" in this new age that we live in, and of course the number of new jobs created as well as old jobs reopened; to this day Criminal Intent has something that Organized Crime hasn't, and that is syndication rights with a solid following still tuning in (even after the show has been off the air well over a decade)!
It is a factor that helped reboot the mothership series back in 2022 after NBC canceled it in 2010, the solid audience of syndication viewers (i.e. TNT, ION Television, WEtv), sales from home entertainment (DVDs/Amazon) and streaming services (Peacock) aided in NBC making the decision easy to reboot the flagship Law & Order series. And while the reboot isn't NBC's highest rated show, it's in the top 20 and performs pretty solid, enough to score a full 22-episode twenty-fourth (S4 of reboot), season next season. It also proves to be a great lead-in for SVU (renewed for S26), that comes on right after.
And much like the reboot and even SVU which has reinvented itself more than once over it's 25 seasons, not only could old viewers return, but this also opens the door to introduce the series to new viewers as well, especially if our favorites do make a return on screen.
What do you all think? With Organized Crime going to Peacock, could a Criminal Intent (or other spinoff) reboot help revitalize NBC Thursday nights as well as the franchise? Or is it time to try something new with the brand? Sound off!

Ok so I got this idea for a Roblox Pressure OC. He's this Urbanshade scientist named Dr. Tanner and is the physical embodiment of chaos... Metaphorically. He is just this silly mad man running about causing chaos indirectly and directly (The number of times they have had to make a PA system announcement about this guy...). Although he has a habit of causing property damage he is considered an asset due to his ability to get the job done and provide Urbanshade with stellar research and technologies so its majorly looked aside (HR hates him though). He has been known to be able to take random things and make strangely effective things with them like a machine he calls the MFE Device which stands for "MY FUCKING EARS!!!" which is a modified radio with an ion battery taped to it and handles screwed onto the side of it made to be a defensive equipment that creates an ear splitting sound to disordinate foes (left 23 hospitalized on initial test). He also has a close connection with an anomaly he has named "Lamaar" after his late dog. "Lamaar" is a unknown entity composed of a dark void like substance that it can control at will. For unknown reasons the creature has shown no hostility towards the doctor and has now taken a wolf like appearance when in his presence. The entity tends to stick to dark places out of instinct however can traverse lit spaces however when in light become more on edge.
Dr. Tanner as of the Blacksite Lockdown is currently hiding out in the maintenance tunnels of the site presumably with Lamaar due to them being missing from their containment cell.
WELL THATS MY IDEA! I will post a drawing of him in a bit.

—————————————
Space. The ‘final frontier’ as Star Trek would say. The endless void of darkness and silence. Where the light one sees from the neighboring stars and galaxies are actually glimpses of the past.
There, thousands of light years from Earth, a lone spaceship glides away after losing the last bit of power it had.
“This thing on?” A whirring sound of the helmet powering up gives Tony some satisfaction. “Hey. Miss Potts. Pep. If you find this recording, don’t post it on social media. It’s gonna be a real tear jerker.” He leans against the wall of the ship, groaning a bit. “I don't know if you're ever gonna see these. I don’t even know if you’re still……..Oh, God, I hope so. Today is day twenty-one—no, uh, twenty-two. You know, if it wasn’t for the existential terror of staring into the literal void of space, I’d say I’m feeling a little better today.
Tony thinks back to earlier in the day when Nebula helped him patch up the stab wound on his side. “Infection’s run its course. Thanks to the Blue Meanie back there. Oh, you’d love her. Very practical. Only a tiny bit sadistic.”
He then relays the update on their situation, grimacing and glancing briefly to his right out the window. “So, the fuel cells were cracked during battle and we figured out a way to reverse the ion charge and bought ourselves about forty-eight hours of flight time.” He pauses to sigh, “Uh, but it’s now dead in the water. Thousand light years from the nearest 7-Eleven.”
“Oxygen will run out tomorrow morning and that’ll be it,” Tony doesn’t mention how they’ve also run out of food. Nebula refused to have her half of the last bag and encouraged Tony to finish it. The man turns his gaze to his left, eyes falling on the figure laying still on a table. A shaky breath leaves him, “Eve is….Eve’s still comatose. I’ve had to shock her a few times with what little power I still have. She’s still breathing—which is a relief, but I honest to God don’t know how. Whatever she absorbed—whatever went in her, is keeping her alive.”
The image of Eve on Titan flashes in his mind. The sight of her bruised and bloody body impaled on a rock by her own wing. The horrified look on her face when she realized the flare-like force was coming at her. The explosion that shook the ground.
And her screams. The gut-wrenching screams.
Tony could still hear them, often waking up at night in a sweat because they would ring in his ear. “When she wakes up—,” he brings his hand to his face, rubbing the scruff along his jaw. “If she wakes up, I-I don’t know what we’ll find. If she'll still be our Eve.” He casts another look in her direction, “But then again, I don’t think at this rate we’ll ever know.”
“Pep, I know I said no more surprises but I gotta say I was really hoping to pull off one last one. But it looks like.. well, you know what it looks like.” He leans forward, looking into the eyes of the helmet. “Don’t feel bad about this. I mean, actually, if you grovel for a couple weeks and then move on with enormous guilt….” The words fall flat as exhaustion overtakes him. “I should probably lie down for a minute. Go rest my eyes.”
Tony rubs his face before glancing back at the helmet, “Please know, when I drift off, it’ll be like every night lately. I’m fine. Totally fine,” he assures, as if she were right in front of him. His fingers then tap the helmet right between the eyes, “I dream about you. Because it’s always you.”
Reluctantly, Tony brings his hand around the device to power it off. It clicks, the eyes dimming to signal the recording ended. Pulling his around his arms and bidding Eve one last glance, Tony leans onto his side before slowly letting the exhaustion take over. He almost feels a sense of peace.
That if this was his last night breathing, at least it would be in his sleep.
Some time later when Tony finally succumbed to sleep, Nebula approaches to check on him. She nudges him onto his back before gently helping the man into a chair. The action makes him shift, and Nebula give a light squeeze his shoulder. She made no sound as she walked away, passing by Eve with a solemn expression.
It was unreal how Nebula could literally feel the heat radiating off the woman. It made her flinch, remembering the burning sensation she felt when she and Tony attempted to move Eve onto the ship. Her one flesh palm was badly burned and Tony had to use what little juice he had in his iron glove to give to her.
They eventually had to skid Eve onto the broken wing of her suit in order to carry her. They feared the metal would melt, but luckily it held. Then there was the matter of getting her on the table. So far it was withstanding the woman star-like temperature—no sign of the steel weakening. Tony had run one last thermal scan and it appeared by the day it was slowly decreasing.
It was as though Eve was adapting to it.
Some time had passed before a brightness pooled behind Tony’s eyes. The sleepiness faded away at the sound of a distant boom, Tony lifting a hand to shield his face. The glow grew stronger causing the man to become fully awake. That’s when he saw something approaching the ship.
At first fear consumed him. It looked very similar to the orange flare on Titan, though this was visibly smaller. The bright light came closer until it was directly in front of Tony and the only thing separating them was the glass windshield of the ship.
Tony stayed frozen as the light began to fade before the form of a woman took over. She had glowing eyes which then dimmed to human-like and blonde hair fell down to her shoulders. There was a golden diamond-like star on the chest of her suit.
Within seconds that fear and dread of an untimely end disappeared when from Tony when she smiled at him. Hope replaced it, and he let out an exhale full of immense relief.
They were going home.
The mood at Avengers compound was a mix of grief and unease. The world as they knew was it shambles and the total of missing persons was still counting. Bucky, Wanda, Sam, T’Challa, Shuri, Vision, and many many more. Their worst nightmare had came true.
Thanos wiped out half of the universe.
Steve Rogers stood in front of the mirror of his old room, towel in his hand to wipe away the moisture and residue of shaving cream. There was a haunted look in his eyes. That’s what came with being a soldier. A soldier stuck in time that is.
A movement in the corner of his eye caught his attention. The small side mirror attached to the main one was shaking, and Steve brought his hand up to stop the movement. But when he pulled away it continued, and that’s when he heard the sound of rumbling throughout the compound.
He dropped the towel onto the counter, racing out of the room and down to the main level. He found Natasha, Rhodey, and Bruce all huddled. All three were look around with worried gazes. “What’s happening?”
Natasha shook her head, “I-I don’t know.” Rhodey pulled up a projection of the outside perimeter. In the corner of the screen, he saw a very large object flying down with a glowing source at the bottom.
“Something’s landing outside,” he announced causing all eyes to widen. Together they all ran out to the front lawn where they found Pepper standing with clasped hands as she watched the ship descend from the sky.
They’re running slowed to a walk, all eyes drawn up before they stopped behind pepper. The woman they recognized as Carol Danvers, who had arrived to Earth demanding to know where Nick Fury was a week prior, was holding the ship and safety brought onto the grass.
The glow around her faded, and she turned to greet the group just as the latch of the ship opened to reveal a stair case. Steve rushed forward the second he saw Tony limping down, holding onto a blue lady for support. But a sense of dread filled him when he saw no sign of Eve.
Tony takes his arm, bidding a look of gratitude to Nebula before stumbling down the remaining steps. He panted, “Couldn’t stop him.”
“Neither could I,” Steve replied, holding tightly to Tony’s arm.
“Hand on,” Tony stopped them from walking, catching his breath. He locked eyes with the Captain, tears filling at the brim, “I lost the kid.” Steve makes a sound of defeat, his expression mirroring the older man.
“Tony, we lost.”
Nothing they could do would change that. Strange saw nearly 15 million possibilities and all of them ended with them losing. All but one. It was bound to happen.
Tony swallows hard, licking his lip before glancing at his savior. “H-Hey!” He called out causing her to look at him. “There’s one more of us inside,” he ignores the look Steve was giving him. It was a mix of shock and hope. “—you may be the only one who can carry her without burning to death.”
“What?” Steve asked, glancing between the two for an answer. Carol nodded to Tony before entering the ship. They all waited with concern, the others moving closer to see what was happening. In the mix, Pepper runs up to Tony causing him to let out a sound of relief, “Oh, good.”
“Oh my God!” She cried before embracing him. “Oh my God.” He hugged her close to him, relishing in her warmth and patted her back gently. When she pulled away his lips pressed to her cheek.
A sound from the ship drew back their attention. Behind him, Tony could hear the others gasp at the sight of Carol walking down the steps with an unconscious Eve Stark in her arms.
Steve starts to move, but Tony lightly pushes against his chest. “Don’t,” he warns. “You can’t touch her.” At Steve’s confused expression, Tony pulls his hand away to reveal the state of his palm. It was scared with light redness to it. The blisters had went away, but the damage was done. Tony would need to get a doctor to look at it, but he already accepted there was some nerve damage to his hand. It still felt numb even 22 days later.
Steve gazes at Tony’s hand, shock filling his eyes and Pepper gasps. Behind him, Natasha leans over to see and her hand comes up to her mouth. They both glance to Nebula, noticing how her one hand was similar. Steve looks back to the man, “What happened?”
He doesn’t answer initially, his attention on his aunt who was unmoving in Carol’s arms save for the slow pace of her breathing. Eyes closing, the memory once again playing in his mind, Tony let’s out a shaky breath. “It—it’s hard to explain,” he pauses to open his eyes to see everyone was watching him, “but I can show you.”
The remaining Avengers and their new allies all gathered in the main room of the compound. Tony sat in a wheelchair, IV drip attached to his side while Eve laid in the next room over hooked up to a variety of machines. It was a sore sight to see the once strong and willed woman so helpless. Her brain waves and vitals were still alarmingly abnormal, but relief came with the knowledge her heart rate was slowing and body temperature had decreased.
She was still hotter than all of them except Carol—the blonde being the only one who could physically touch Eve without any harm. She had to be the one to attach the tubes and machines with Bruce instructing her. As they worked, Steve watched from the doorway with his arms crossed.
“Is she going to be okay?” He asked Bruce, glancing up to see the doctor looked worried.
“It’s hard to say, Cap,” he spoke with unease. Stress coated his expression. “I’ve never seen anyone with readings like this. I-I don’t even know what’s wrong with her—do you?” Bruce turned the former Kree. She shook her head, moving to place the last syringe in Eve’s arm.
“I can’t determine anything until we see what Tony has to show us.” With that the three leave the room, giving one last glance to the Avenger before making their way to where everyone else was. When every one was settled, taking their place on various corners of the area, Tony weakly called out to F.R.I.D.A.Y, “Pull up Mark L footage from twenty-two days ago.”
“Right away, sir.” Within seconds a projection appeared and their eyes locked on the reddish-orange hue of Titan. Tony has F.R.I.D.A.Y skim through bit where Quill snapped, focusing it on the moment Eve was incapacitated.
Everyone was rendered speechless when the witnessed the Avenger impaled by her own wing. It was so graphic Pepper had to look away, her hand coming to her mouth to cover the gasp she let out. Rhodey also had to turn away, the image of his friend too painful to see. Both Natasha and Steve flinched, the soldier clenching his jaw.
The next thing they saw was the glowing orange flare. It blasted Eve through her chest before the rest swarmed around her. They saw her lift off the ground, the metal pieces disintegrating and the look of horror on the Avenger as the flare consumed her. She was screaming and in that moment they were grateful Tony had muted the recording.
Seconds ticked by before Eve was no longer visible and a bright light erupted from the force of the explosion. They lived it through the eyes of Tony. Dust filled the air and rocks rained from the sky. The anxiety Tony must have felt was swarming through all of them. The last thing the recording showed was Eve lying still in the middle of the crater.
“And you said she’s been unconscious ever since?” Steve asked after a minute of silence passed. He was rubbing his jaw, a habit of his when things became tense. There was a mixture of emotion flooding him. He wasn’t the only one however, everyone had to take a moment to process what they had seen.
“Twenty-three days and counting,” Tony replied, “I’ve had to play doctor and shock her because he heart rate is beating too fast for a human to withstand—even with that super juice.” Tony winces, adjusting in his chair. “There’s also the concerning matter she’s taking on a body temp enough to rival our own sun yet somehow manages to not melt and become Freddy Krugers long lost sister.”
“It was like—like that thing,” Natasha shakes her head, “was targeting her. Why would that be?”
“Beats me,” Rhodey sighs, letting his hands fall to his side. “My question is why didn’t it blow up Thanos. He was right there—could’ve saved us a whole lot of trouble.”
Steve clutches the back of the chair in front of him, his head dropping to glance at the floor. “Whatever it was and why Eve was targeted…,” he paused before looking back up,. “We’ll get that answer when she wakes.”
“If,” Tony corrected, grimacing at the thought. “If she wakes up you mean.”
“Tony—.” Nat tries, but he holds a hand up.
“No need for optimism, Romanoff. We’ve got more important matters while we wait for whatever fate has planned for my aunt.” He sniffs, ignoring the looks he was receiving. “Give me the stats.”
Though hesitant to change the subject, Steve sighed and pulled up all they had currently on the situation. Images of those vanished took up the screen, most notably their friends and allies. Rhodey was the one to start, “It’s been twenty-three days since Thanos came to Earth.” Stephen Strange and Bucky Barnes’ face appeared, followed by Sam Wilson and Erik Selvig.
“World governments are in pieces,” Natasha continued, the images of Hope Van Dyne and Wanda Maximoff taking over. “The parts are still working are trying to take a census and it looks like he did,” she paused, noticing the broken look of Tony when Peter Parker stared back at him. He had to look away, chest constricting at another wave of emotion.
“He did exactly what he said he was gonna do. Thanos wiped out fifty percent of all living creatures.” The room fell silent once again, everyone taking in the information. Sadness was evident on all of them. Carol, who’d been very serious and stoic since the moment she arrived, even showed emotion at the sight of Nick Fury’s face.
“Where is now?” Tony asked suddenly. “Where?”
“We don’t know.” Steve replied, leaning on the table with his arms crossed. “He just opened a portal and walked through.” His answer makes Tony sigh, wheeling his chair a tad forward.
“What’s wrong with him,” He pointed to Thor seated far away from the group, looking just as bad as him.
“Oh, he’s pissed,” an unfamiliar voice sounded. When Tony turned in it’s direction, the man was in complete shock when the voice belonged to a raccoon. “He thinks he failed. Which of course he did, but you know there’s a lot of that going around, ain’t there?”
Tony was at a lost for words, but somehow found them. “Honesty, until this exact second I thought you were a Build-A-Bear.”
“Maybe I am,” Rocket fired back, his body slumping in defeat.
Steve brought the conversation back before it got sidetracked. “We’ve been hunting Thanos for three weeks now. Deep space scans and satellites, and we got nothing. Tony, you fought him.”
“Who told you that?” he tilted his head, finding humor in the assumption. “I didn’t fight him. No, he wiped my face with a planet while a solar flare inhabited my aunt and the Bleecker Street magician gave away the store. That’s what happened. There was no fight—.”
“Tony—.”
“—‘Cause he’s not beatable.”
“Did he give you any clues, any coordinates, anything?”
“Uh..” Tony sputters out, making a motion of his hand against his head. Steve and Natasha exchange looks of distress. “I saw this coming a few years back. I had a vision-I didn’t want to believe it. Thought I was dreaming.”
Steve starts to stand, “Tony, I’m gonna need you to focus.”
“And I needed you,” Tony cuts with off harshly. “As in, past tense. That trumps what you need. It’s too late, buddy. Sorry.” The last thing Tony felt was sympathy for the soldier and Steve knew that. The thin line of friendship they had at the beginning of the Accords fiasco had snapped.
The older man sniffs, moving to stand from his chair. “You know what I need?” He pushes the bowls on the table away, making the contents spill. “I need to shave. And I believe I remember telling all yourselves—.”
“Tony, Tony!” Rhodey moves forward when Tony removes his IV from his arm.
“—alive and otherwise, that what we needed was a suit of armor around the world. Remember that? Whether it impacted our precious freedoms or not. That’s what we needed.”
“Well, that didn’t work out, did it?” Steve’s words only anger Tony more.
“I said we’d lose. You said, ‘We’ll do that together, too.’ And guess what, Cap? We lost. And you weren’t there.” Tony pauses, pointing his finger at the room where Eve was laid. “And now the only family I have left is fighting for her life and may never wake up. Your so called best friend,” he emphasized with malice, aware how Steve flinched. “You weren’t there to save her.”
The super-soldier tried not to react. He didn’t want Tony to know how badly the words were affecting him. Guilt had flooded him knowing the state Eve was in. It pained him at the thought she could never wake up. All he could do was pray she did so they could finally resolve everything. So Eve would know he was sorry.
Steve remained silent as Tony continued his rant. “But that’s what we do, right? Our best work after the face? We’re the ‘Avengers,’” Rhodey had to help steady Tony when he started to stumble. “We’re the ‘Avengers,’ not the ‘Pre-vengers.’”
“Okay,” Rhodey calmly said.
“Right?”
“You made your point. Just sit down, okay?”
“Okay. No, no,” Tony tugged away from his friend. “Here’s my point, you know what?” He pointed to Carol, “she’s great by the way.”
“Tony, you’re sick,” Rhodey said with more force, trying to push him back into the wheelchair. “Sit down.”
“We need you. You’re new blood.” When he successfully broke away from Rhodey, Tony marched straight up to Steve. “Bunch of tired ole mules. I got nothing for you, Cap.” He stood before him with only only an arms length between then. “I got no coordinates, no clues, no strategies, no options. Zero. Zip. Nada. No trust, liar.”
The word cuts into Steve and leaves a lasting effect. Pain fills his expression as Tony removes the device from his hallowed chest. With shaky breath, he takes Steve’s hand and places it firmly in his palm. “Here, take this. You find him, you put that on….” His starts to stutter, the air becoming hard to inhale. “You hide.” His knees give out causing Steve to rush forward.
“Tony!”
“I’m fine,” he pants. He pushes him and Rhodey away, “Let me…” The words fall as darkness overtakes him. He falls on his side, head nearly hitting Carol’s feet and everyone moves to the rescue. Together they get him in one of the rooms close to Eve. Pepper, who had been in the kitchen making tea, rushes in and moves to Tony’s bedside.
Rhodey, the caring friend he is, practically tucks Tony in and hooks him back up to an IV drip. He gives Pepper one last nod after placing Tony’s glasses on the table and exits. Steve, Nat, and Carol are waiting for him. “Bruce gave him a sedative. He’s gonna probable be out for the rest of the day. And I feel it’s safe to assume the same goes for Eve.” Like clockwork, the four all move their heads to glance into the room where the woman laid.
“You guys take care of them,” Carol says causing them to turn to her. “And I’ll bring him a Xorrian elixir when I come back.” She uncrosses her arms and begins walking away.
“Where are you going?” Steve asks curiously.
“To kill Thanos.” Both Nat and Steve exchange looks, before hastily chasing after her.
“Hey,” Nat calls, making Carol stop and turn around. “You know, we usually work as a team here. And, uh, between you and I, morale’s a little fragile.”
“We realize up there is more your territory,” Steve says from behind Nat, “but this is our fight, too.”
“You even know where he is?” Rhodey asks, leaning against the entryway with his arms crossed.
“I know people who might.”
“Don’t bother,” Nebula cuts in, drawing everyone’s attention. “I can tell you where Thanos is.” Her revelation had everyone on edge. They gathered in the conference room, focused on what Nebula had to offer. “Thanos spent a long time trying to perfect me,” she begins, trying to ignore the anger in her as the painful memories resurfaced. “And when he worked, he talked about his Great Plan. Even disassembled, I wanted to please him. I’d ask, ‘where would we go once his plan was complete?’ And his answer was always the same.” The woman pushed off the wall and approached the table, letting her head drop between her shoulders. “‘To the Garden.’”
Rhodey raises his eyebrows, not really impressed with the name. “That’s cute. Thanos has a retirement plan.”
“So where is he?” Steve walked over and around the table so he was in front of Rocket. The raccoon pulls up a projection of the Earth.
“When Thanos snapped his fingers Earth became ground zero for a power surge of ridiculous cosmic proportions. Something similar happened just before on Titan which we can assume involved your friend,” They all stiffen at the mention of Eve. “No one’s ever seen anything like it. Although the type of cosmic energy on Titan was different than Thanos snapping.”
“How so?” Steve asked, tilting his head.
“Not really sure. Haven’t seen anything like it my travels of our universe. But then two days ago,” the image changed from Earth to another planet. “On this planet, the same power surge occurred.”
“Thanos is there,” Nebula confirmed.
Natasha leaned foward, the glow of the projection illuminating her face. “He used the stones again.”
“Hey, hey, hey,” Bruce nervously chuckles. “We’d be going in short handed, you know.”
“Look, he’s still got the stones so—.” Carol cuts Rhodey off.
“So, let’s get ‘em.” She nods at the potential plan. “Use them to bring everyone back.”
“Just like that?” Bruce doesn’t look convinced. He was right to feel hesitant. They already lost one battle, why repeat that so soon.
“Yeah,” Steve agrees with the woman. “Just like that.”
Natasha adds in on the topic. “Even if there’s a small chance that we can undo this, I mean, we owe it to everyone who’s not in this room to try.”
“If we do this, how do we know it’s gonna end any differently than it did before?” Bruce finally asks what he’d been thinking the entire time.
Carol places her hands on her hips, “Because before you didn’t have me.”
“Hey, new girl?” Rhodey gets her attention, not really enjoying how she’s taking full change on the matter. “Everybody in this room is about that superhero life. And if you don’t mind my asking, where the hell have you been all this time?”
“There are a lot of other planets in the universe,” she tells him. “And unfortunately, they didn’t have you guys.” Steve’s lips curl up and the look on Rhodey’s face. She just owned him big time.
The sound of Thor skidding his chair back to stand has Carol turning. The two lock eyes and he comes to stand right in front of her. Keeping their eyes locked, Thor raises his hand—just inches from Carol’s face. Blonde hair flies and falls back in place by the force of Stormbreaker flying past her and into his grip. She gives no reaction, remaining stoic at the God.
Thor brings the ax down in front of him, before slightly nodding in approval. It makes Carol smirk. “I like this one,” he tells the others. They share another look, one of mutual respect.
Steve turns back to the image of The Garden. Determination in his eyes as he says the words everyone was thinking. They were gonna find him, and they were gonna bring everyone back. “Let’s go get this son of a bitch.”
After everyone suited up they piled back into the room. Thor was the first to enter. And when the rest arrived they found him replaying the footage of Eve. When Tony had showed them earlier, Thor had paid no mind. Now the God’s eyes were concentrated.
When the recording replayed, this time focusing on the moment where the flare swarmed Eve, Steve approached. “Thor,” he called, eyes shifting back and forth. “What do you know?”
Behind him everyone’s ears perked, all thinking the same. The footage played for a third time before the man finally spoke.
“On Asgard,” he started, voice lowering as a feeling of emotion swarmed him. “My father once spoke of immortal and immutable manifestation of the universal force of life and passion.” Mix matched eyes trained on the screen. “A ‘cosmic entity’ he called it. The spark which gave life to the universe and all it’s creation. And the flame that will ultimately end it.”
By now everyone had gathered closer to the God. “This entity then traveled the cosmos. It would create and destroy all in it’s path—not even a Celestial could tame it.” The recording was now on auto reply, once again showing Eve’s bloody figure moments before the flare. “It’s said to be powerful than the Celestials.” The eyes of those who knew of Celestials widen in surprise. Thor didn’t add the fact the Infinity stones fell into the category.
He didn’t want to tarnish any last bit of hope for the team if his theory of Eve was proven false.
Thor thinks back to the conversation on Asgard. The memory of a young Loki and him sitting by the fire as Odin relayed the story while Frigga conjured illusions of a solar-like flare moving through the universe. Awe and wonder in their eyes. The thought of a being so powerful it was hard to believe. “My father said it was a myth. A legend passed down from generation to generation. Many civilizations worship this entity—they see it as a God.” He pauses the video on Eve moments before the explosion. Before the ball of light took form.
“Why are you telling us this?” Rhodey asks suspiciously when Thor finishes. Thor rubs his jaw, but doesn’t face the group. His attention remains on the screen.
“There’s never been proof said being exists. Although, it’s believed it takes the manifestation of a flare,” he zooms in on the projection. Eve was hovered over the ground with her arms spread out. Her head slightly tilted up and they could make out that her mouth was parted. All around her was glowing orange. If one looked closely, they could see tiny cracks in her skin.
It was almost a beautiful sight…..If not for the fact she was now laying in a coma because of it.
“Sort of like what we see here,” Thor trails off. The words bring a silence so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Steve steps closer, understanding what Thor was implying. His eyes move between the God and the image.
“What are you saying, Thor?”
He turns to Steve, a flicker of realization in his eyes. “I’m saying, if my theory is correct, our Lady Stark may never be the woman we once had.”
The conversation ends there with no explanation to follow. Steve remains frozen as Thor takes his leave, Stormbreaker in his grip and exits the compound. The others followed after him, many with expressions of worry and unease. Rocket, Nebula, and Carol were just as anxious despite not knowing Eve well. Just the thought of it being true was enough to spark an eerie feeling.
That their friend, ally, and teammate, who was unresponsive, had been targeted by a cosmic entity. ‘What did it want with her?’ was the million dollar question. They wouldn’t until Eve awoke.
If she awoke.
Seconds passed in silence until Steve eventually spun on his heel and joined everyone. The only ones who remained in the compound were Tony, Pepper, Eve. Happy had been called and would arrive shortly to give them company.
The projection still showed the paused image of Eve. Trapped in a fiery swarm of energy. In all the times they played the video—even freezing it, no one noticed how the flare, just seconds before conforming into a ball of light, was in the shape of a bird.
It had been roughly a week after the team returned to Earth following the mission to The Garden. Another failure had dawned them. This one the worst because it sealed the deal for the fate of their universe.
Half of all living creatures were gone forever.
Thanos had destroyed the stones, making his snap irreversible. He must have known they would try to come for them, so the Titan made sure they’d never get the chance. And then Thor cut his head off.
The second the returned everyone had scattered. They needed to deal with the hard loss in their own way. Thor went off to help his people find a new home. The guardians and Carol were back in space. Bruce and Steve took off to God knows where, although they remained in touch with Natasha.
And the former Widow? She settled in the only home she knew. The Avengers compound.
The elixir Carol gifted Tony helped tremendously. He was back on his feet the next morning feeling refreshed, but nothing new from Eve. Becase of this, Tony stayed longer at the facility than planned. Pepper was in the process of making arrangements for them, the two debating if they wanted to even stay in the city or find someplace quiet. It was common sense to push back the wedding—neither wanting to go through with it until they knew Eve was okay.
So here they were stuck in the compound with Happy, Rhodey, and Nat. It was almost comical how the atmosphere was. The last time all six were together like this was 2010. Natasha busied herself with the idea she could continue the Avengers, even if it only made up of herself, the Guardians, Okoye, and Carol. Rhodey did agree to help which relieved a lot of stress for the redhead.
She was the first to hear the choked gasp and beeping sound coming from the monitors. The chair she was sitting hit the floor from how hard she pushed off it. Natasha was running, calling out to F.R.I.D.A.Y to alert the others when Eve’s screams started. She wasn’t the only one to have heard the monitors, Rhodey was cutting the corner of the opposite direction at the same moment.
“Is she awake?” He said, oblivious to the ear-piercing scream.
Natasha gave a small glare, yelling over the screams, “What do you think?” They both entered the room to find Eve covered in a layer of sweat, hunched over the bed and holding her head in her hands. “Eve!!” Natasha ran up to grab her arms, but then remembered she couldn’t touch her. “Eve, look at me!”
“My head,” the woman whimpered, eyes squeezed shut. “It’s in my head!” She let out another scream as the pain pierced her.
“What’s in your head, Eve?” Nat asked, then turned to Rhodey, “Get Tony, now!” He spun on his heel and ran out. When she turned back to Eve, Nat could hear here mumbling in a frantic speed, “It’s too loud—it’s too loud. I-I-I can’t—-I can’t—AH!” Eve’s ears were ringing, her head pounding.
The monitors were beeping so loud it drew Nat’s attention—her eyes widening by the numbers showing. “Eve,” she calmly said, looking away from the deathly high heart rate showing. “Eve, you need to calm down—listen to my voice. It’s me, Natasha.”
But Eve couldn’t hear the redhead. Fire was consuming her. Her body, her mind, all of it. The voice in her head was almost like an echo. It was breaking apart the walls in her mind, with Eve unable to hide. A constant pressure to let her know it was there. “Evelyn.”
New voices entered the room, and Eve’s eyes snapped open when cold metal hands grabbed her shoulder. Her vision was blurry at first, but then it cleared. Tony was kneeling in front of her in a state of shock and relief. “Eve,” he said, but his voice shouted afar.
“T-Tony,” she whispered. That’s when Eve finally looked around the room and realized she was in the compound. “This—this is the compound. W-what, what happened?” Her eyes landed on Nat standing behind Tony, the drifting to the doorway where Rhodey was. Finally she could see Pepper and Happy behind the glass window. They all were wearing the same expressions.
Shock, relief, and worry all in one.
“T-Thanos,” Eve turned back to her nephew, noticing how he was gripping her with just the hand portions of his suit. “Thanos. Titan. The others— where are the others?”
“Eve, what was the last thing you remember?” Tony asked hesitantly. It was a good sign she remembered the fight on Titan, but now the questioned remained on whether she could recall what happened after.
“I—,” she swallowed, thinking back despite the constant pounding in her head. “Thanos he—I was on the rock. My wing—,” she gasped, hand coming to her stomach only to find there was no bandage or visible wound. “I was dying. I was dying And then, there—there was a bright light coming from the sky.”
When she didn’t add on, Tony thought, “Okay, that’s a start,” glancing at the floor. Eve, who was looking at the wall and didn’t see his mouth not move instantly said, “What’s a start?”
Tony’s head snapped up so fast it made her flinch and turn back to him. “What?” The expression he was giving worried her.
“I-I didn’t—,” he stuttered, eyes slightly wide. “Eve, I didn’t say that.”
“Yes you did. I heard you.”
Tony shook his head, loosening his grip on her. “I didn’t say it aloud, Eve.”
“What?” As the ringing in her ears stopped, more voices filled the silence. “Did she just—.” Nat’s tone rang out, despite Eve looking straight at her and no movement from her lips. “That’s impossible,” Rhodey was next. Faintly she could hear Pepper and Happy, but they weren’t in conversation either.
There was a spike in her heart rate as the realization filled her. She pushed away from Tony, inching further onto the bed. “Eve,” he tried to say calmly, but it just scared her more. “Eve, you need to calm down.”
“I—I can hear you—all of you,” she felt her lungs constrict. “Evelyn,” the echo called to her again. It made her whimper, tears brimming her eyes as she looked around her to find the voice, but nothing was there. She could feel everyone’s eyes on hers, unsure of what to do. “What’s happening to me?”
“You’re gonna be okay,” Tony leans forward. “Now that you’re awake, we’re gonna do everything to figure out what—-.”
“How long?” She cuts him off with a gulp. “How long ago was Titan?” Tony clenches his jaw, not wanting to reveal the truth. But the number of days flickered in his mind and it was enough for Eve to catch it. He hadn’t even realized it happened until she gasped. “No…”
“They’re gone, Evelyn.” The voice told her and the pounding returned. It was strong, making her clutch her head again and wince. “He won. Your friends failed.”
“No,” she cried. “No!” Lights began to flicker, causing everyone to freeze as fear filled them. Eve could hear their thoughts among the echoed voice. ‘What the hell?’ “What is she doing?’ “Oh my God.’
“Get out of my head,” she hunched over in a whisper. The flickering continued, becoming more and more frantic. The monitors were going crazy, the sound sending her into a frenzy. “It’s too loud—It’s too loud.” Her words had Tony and Rhodey moving to unplug the monitors, but it did nothing for the woman.
Just the sound of their thoughts were becoming too much. Eve didn’t know how to stop listening. And she was slowly starting to lose control of whatever was flowing through her. “Get out of my head.”
“I’m part of you now, Evelyn.”
“What are you?”
“You’ll know soon.”
“Eve!” Tony shouted, but it got lost amongst the wave of noise. Happy moved Pepper away from the room despite her protests, worried for her friend and fiancé. Natasha was slowly backing away, coming to stand by the door with Rhodey. Neither could form words at what they were witnessing.
“Get out of my head.”
“Evelyn.”
“Stop.”
“Evel—.”
“No!” She cried out and a light fixture exploded. A tear escaped her right eye. The others flinched and fear pooled at the sight. The whispering echo continued—a mental battle in the Avengers mind. And then all hell broke loose, when Eve’s voice took a tone none of them had ever heard of. “Get out of my head!”
The monitors closest to the window flew into the glass window—shattering it causing everyone to react. Tony nearly tripped on his own feet when he jumped back, avoiding the one nearly hitting him. Nat let out a gasp, hand clapping over her mouth. All the lights exploded causing them to run out to avoid being hit by the fluorescent glass.
When it was over, Tony ran back in to find Eve laying unconscious on the bed. This time, he could see the glowing orange cracks in her skin. They covered her hairline—going down her jaw and onto her neck. He didn’t dare touch her. If those cracks were visible then it surely implied her body temperature was high.
“Are those..is her skin cracked?” Rhodey said from over his shoulder.
Tony lets out a defeated sigh, not answering. The last thing they wanted was to be back at square one. It gave him hope she would wake up again, but now they had a new battle in their wake.
And if Tony was being honest with himself, he didn’t want anyone other than the people in that room to know.
“No one else knows about this, understood?” He says and waits for a response. When it doesn’t come he turns around. Both Rhodey and Natasha look hesitant at the idea. He narrows his eyes, “I don’t need her having any more stress added on to whatever the hell is going on. You heard her didn’t you?” They both nod and he swallows hard. “There’s something inside her—in her head, that we don’t know and it’s scaring her. This stays between us. I mean it.”
Nat rubs her arms, frowning as she glances to her friend. It didn’t feel right leaving the others in the dark, but understood it would be better for Eve. “Okay.” Rhodey shakes his head, but agrees anyway. Tony didn’t need to convince Pepper or Happy, they would support whatever he had felt was right.
After a few seconds Nat asks, “What do you want me to tell him?” The ‘him’ being Steve, “If he asks why she’s gone?” Tony didn’t know how Natasha knew he was planning on taking Eve away from the compound, but didn’t speak on it. He gives a shrug, looking over his shoulder to his aunt. The cracks had faded and her skin was back to normal.
“As far as Steve Rogers is concerned, Eve’s still in a coma—I know what you’re thinking,” he lifts a hand when Nat looks like she’s about to protest. “but give me another month to figure this out. She needs to be somewhere away from the chaos where it’s quiet. That should relieve some of the strain this new…power is putting on her.” The man was having trouble coming to terms with this new reality. It worried him to the point he was starting to feel a headache by what the future for his aunt had in store for them.
“She can read our minds now, Tony,” Rhodey couldn’t believe what he was saying.
“I know,” the man replied, scratching his chin. “We’ll take it one day at a time.” He moved to the bed, hands covered and brought Eve’s body more to the middle. He didn’t bother with the blanket since she was still drenched in sweat. He made a mental note to have the AC turned up in hopes of bringing her body temperature back down.
Part of him felt he needed to shock her, convinced her heart rate was high, but felt it would do nothing. All he could do now was wait again until she awoke. In the meantime, he and Pepper would find somewhere quiet and out of the city for them to settle.
Just when he was about to leave the room, something on Eve caught his attention. It was so small he almost didn’t notice if not for the little light coming in from the window. He leaned closer, his face directly over Eve’s—focused on the hairs framing her face.
“What is it?” Natasha asked, tilting her head around him to see what he was looking at.
“Get me a magnifying glass—or better yet,” he places his glasses on and shines a light on Eve’s forehead. Squinting, he makes out the discolor at the root of her scalp. “What in the hell?” It couldn’t be possible—there was no way. Even after blinking several times to see if his mind was playing ticks on him, it was still there clear as day.
The roots of Eve’s dark—almost black hair, so small one could miss it if they weren’t looking with a magnifying glass,
was a deep blood red.

Welcome to my laboratory!
So nice to see you here! I hope you are doing well. Do not forget to drink water, take breaks when you can, and embrace the curiosity of the world.
I guess I'll tell you a bit about myself. My name is Dr. Ion Void, AKA The Science Boi (they/he/xe). I'm a scientist in training who's very interested in chemistry, astronomy, and modern physics. I'm queer, white, and disabled. That is all you need to know about me.
I post whatever I want, but the most common posts are lgbt stuff, aro/ace positivity, trans/nb positivity, cool science stuff, mad science, sciencecore stuff, cool things about recent science research, unreality, and the relevant political thing. Most of these are reblogs, but I write my own stuff when I feel like it.
All potential triggers will be tagged. If I miss anything or mistag it, feel free to let me know :3
I would put a DNI, but I really don't think they work. Just don't be a jerk on my page. I have and will continue to block people who are rude on my or other people's posts. This blog is feminist, sex worker positive, pro choice, in favor of bodily autonomy for everyone, ACAB, supportive of all ranges of abilities, pro vax, lgbt positive, trans positive, pre-med/no-med trans positive, nonbinary positive, MOGAI positive, m-spec lesbian/gay positive, aro/ace positive, radically accepting of all queer identities, and blasphemous to the Catholic church. If you don't agree with me on any of those points, you probably don't want to follow me anyways.
Anyhoo, we're currently hiring for lab assistants and lab rats. I'll sweeten the deal for you: team members get to eat the green goo.

Surfacing the Subtext: Ion Fury
I am happy to see the so-called “Boomer Shooters” making a comeback. Modern and “realistic” (citation needed) shooters never interested me. I loved the original Medal of Honor but using a real life third world nation as target practice always rubbed me the wrong way. Give me demons, robots and Lovecraftian horrors to slay, not a poor guy driven to acts of violence because of the propaganda he has not way of shutting off.
In 2020, before the world ended, I decided to play three of them as a trilogy. Ion Fury, Dusk, and then Amid Evil. Partially for the Heavy Metal inspired groupings of sci-fi fantasy, but it also shows some evolution of the FPS as a genre. From the 2 1/2 D of Doom and the Build Engine, to the bright colored lighting of Unreal and other related games.
But there is a an obnoxious “truism” among these kinds of games: That there is No Story. If you read my thoughts in “Video Games Do Not Need Oscars” than you can probably guess my stance on how video game storylines should be measured. Many people believe that it’s solely the cutscenes or the dialogue segments. But I would argue that the story of any kind needs to encompass the whole work: the action scenes, the quiet moments and even the mundane things like armor repair and heading to the shop. Anything you see on screen or on the page is the story. Stories include battles and the mundane, is what I’m saying.
This can be a hard stance, as a single character murdering that many people is a stretch of the imagination. But games tend to get away with it because it is based on your skill. You see the ins and outs of how the character takes on an adversary. And it’s during gameplay that the subtler moments, like background story telling and character establishment, can occur.
With that in mind, let’s look at Ion Fury, developed by Void Point and published by 3D Realms. There is controversy with this game and that should not be entirely ignored. But I am going to put it aside for this discussion as it’s not what this article is about.
Ion Fury is the descendant of Duke Nukem 3D. In fact, Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison, the protagonist, was originally a sidekick for Duke Nukem before being dummied out. Duke Nukem 3D was a ground breaker in some respects, as it was the first noteworthy FPS that made levels look like real, lived in places, as opposed to the monster closet mazes of Doom and Quake. Now, Duke Nukem 3D didn’t set out to make a compelling storyline. Most of it were voiced references (passing off as jokes) by Duke himself, and locations were designed to replicate the team’s favorite action and sci-fi movies at the time. Arguably, during that era, Blood did more to establish a consistent tone and character arc.
Bringing us back to the Build engine two decades later, Ion Fury does, in some ways, matches the musclehead bravado of Duke Nukem 3D. But its world is a bit more consistent, less like a collage of random action movies and more set in its own world. It’s a cyberpunk dystopian future. Big money basically runs the world, crime is rampant, police is militarized and its raining a lot. A lot of the ads you see on the walls are over the top and goofy, but there is a sinister undercurrent, made up of the usual corporate corruption (that is having more and more trouble hiding within the last few years).
That whole paragraph? That is just about what you see when you explore. I haven’t even touched the storyline yet. Despite the primitive graphics, every inch of the game screams horrid urban life to your face.
And these details are not ignored during the actual plot either. You are Shelly “Bombshell” Harrison (part of GDF, the law enforcement), and you’re trying to stop the plans of the evil Dr. Heskel, a billionaire scientist out to take over Neo-DC. And, yes, it’s as cheesy as it sounds. They are constantly taunting each other with bad puns and dated jokes the whole game.
But the mooks you fight aren’t pig cops or lizard aliens. They are brainwashed cyborgs. Dr. Heskel’s firm specializes in cybernetic impants and artificial limbs, presented to the public as helping people back on their feet. With that same technology, Dr. Heskel has created his army, likely lobotimized and turned into killing machines. Kept further from the public eye is his weapons development branch.
On the surface, it’s easy to see this as pro-cop, anti science/medicine. And admittedly, I felt a little uncomfortable with the game in my library. But it’s not as black and white as all that. You can find ads for GDF basically advertising itself for people with aggression issues. And there is a brutal parody of Trump’s campaign ad in the hidden level.
Shelly herself is a bit of a blood psychopath. It’s easy to dismiss most FPS protagonists are blood thirsty killers. But I would argue that Shelly is a psychopath where the original Doomguy isn’t. Doomguy’s back story is that he is put on the Mars base as punishment for disobeying orders. Said orders were killing innocent civilians. He does have a big grin when picking up high tech weapons and ammo, but let’s put it this way. Doomguy is in an absolute nightmare scenario. He is surrounded by literal Hell. And when pitted against what seems to be insurmountable, any weapon looks like a glimmer of hope. That this can be won. That he can survive.
Shelly is enjoying herself basically the whole way through. Arguably, she is also in a nightmare scenario, but often her one-liners are a bit more off putting than anything Duke says. And unless she’s grievously wounded, she always has a grin on her face, where Doomguy always looks cautious and focused. While the game and the text does side with her in the immediate storyline, there’s a sense that she would have been a villain in any other story.
Probably the most generous interpretation is that the game is ultimately anti-megacorporation. That it’s not science or medicine that is the problem (since you use plenty of both), but what corporate greed does to them. Dr. Heskel mentions that GDF relies on the weapons he creates (the usual we’re-not-so-different speech), but it makes sense. The villain has the ability to work and invent high tech solutions, but he would much rather sell weapons for profit. Weaponzing medicine, weaponizing science, weaponizing law enforcement and growing rich off of both. The cyborgs can be seen as a corporation grinding people into cogs, as mindless machines for one’s own agenda.
And let’s not neglect the combat itself. While not as absurdly bloody as, well, Blood, it is visceral in its own way. Headshots are possible now (and impressive feat given the engine), and corpses are not untouchable. There were plenty of moments where I dodge a grenade, and watch pulverize a body into gibs. Blood and cybernetic parts fly through the air, an illustration of the wasted potential of the technology and the violence that it brings. Environmental damage, which I tend to ignore in most modern games, is heightened by the sprite work. The violence isn’t just the blood, but the world around you, from broken glass, to wrecked toilets to busted vending machines. The facade of an orderly, futuristic society is torn asunder by the very people with power.
I imagine there are two camps of fans of this game: the kind of people who read into it and make articles like these, and those who take it at face value and just enjoy all the guns. And I know the controversy muddles my point. They’re often easy to miss, but that does not dismiss the decision to include that.
You could argue that the game is noncommital, bringing up subjects but not really doing anything with them. And a serious talk isn’t really what the developers intended. But there is not nothing. It is, like most speculative fiction, a reflection of our own world. And with its Bulid Engine graphics, Ion Fury says a lot from the neon lights, violence and locations.
So, well done, Void Point. But maybe keep the unfunny trans and gay jokes out of the expansion? Thanks.

Ok the last thing I care about is Dean’s storyline with Gayle, but I think you mentioned something about it not working, to which I so agree. So why did they just jump right into it instead of building the relationship up on screen. Presumably they have time. Why do you think the rush?
Yeah, it’s not working for me at all, anon.
I understand what they’re going for and I actually do think it’s a really solid way of making Dean face up to his actions and his bad behaviour, and to tease out character growth without putting the onerous of that on Beth (particularly since the show has well-established across the last two seasons that Beth and Dean are incapable of growing with each other). It actually separates their arcs and frees them from each other both narratively and thematically in a way that I actually do like, even if I’m not liking the scenes themselves.
I think there are three reasons for why it’s not working, and I actually don’t think it’s the speed of the storyline. The show’s always moved at a break-neck pace, and I don’t think it’s ever hindered a relationship set-up as badly as Dean and Gayle’s. I also, perhaps shockingly, don’t think the issue is Dean as a character either.
This show has proven it can make scenes with unlikeable characters incredibly watchable and compelling multiple times - I mean, even just off the top of my head, think about the scene where Marion calls Boomer a loser in s1 (a scene I really love, despite not loving either character), or when Mary Pat confronts Boomer at the end of s1 about the recording device, or - - well, any Mary Pat scene actually, haha.
Dean’s not the issue here, at least not as a character; the issue is a lack of story world grounding, tone, and I’ve unfortunately got to say Ione Skye herself. So let’s unpack that.
1. Lack of story world grounding.
This show actually has a lot of story worlds, and it typically does a really good job of introducing those spaces and using those spaces to inform character, and those characters to inform spaces. Think of Dean and Boland Motors and the yellow corvette - a gaudy, failing business used to underscore Dean’s incompetence, his immaturity and the way that he views himself, or even Fine and Frugal which is used very starkly to explore Boomer and Annie’s potential (Fine and Frugal being the absolute culmination of Boomer’s, while representing wasted potential for Annie).
When it comes to these characters, we have a strong sense of where they’ve come from because we know how they exist in the story, even before we know them. Mary Pat is probably the best example of this - she’s introduced not only through the secret shopper scheme - something the show established as having a very particular employee base, but through Beth’s house. It instantly positions Mary Pat as a foil to Beth, because she could be Beth - right down to the four children.
It’s hard to place Gayle within the story because Four Star Pool and Spas isn’t established enough for us to understand how it informs her character and vice versa. We aren’t grounded in that location enough to understand how she exists in it, nor are we getting enough visual cues in the location to be able to infer information about her as a character.
Think of it this way - how was Boland Motors introduced? Through that terrible ad with Dean in a pig suit clutching Amber to him in a sequined dress. It told us so, so much about not only what that business was, but about Dean - a shameless, goofy, tacky, car salesman, likely sleeping with his secretary (a fact properly established shortly after). That’s a lot of information quickly and effectively shared!
Now think about how Four Star Pools and Spas was introduced - a cutaway scene of Dean staying back at work while everyone else left, and him pausing to look at Gayle’s trophy.
There are no establishing shots, no information on the business itself, we haven’t even seen anyone actually - y’know, sell a hot tub. We know Dean places importance on the trophy, but we don’t have any context for whether that’s a deserved importance because we don’t know the business. We don’t understand how it operates, we don’t know if it’s a classier place or a tackier one, we don’t know if Dean’s good or bad at the job, and we don’t know how he functions in the space, or what that space is telling us about where and who he is at this point in the story.
Like - - even compare it to the other car dealership he worked at at the end of s2 which was established very quickly as well, and again very effectively through the bubbly, pointedly younger co-workers, cult-like chanting, and Dean’s inability to play into it. We’re getting none of that with Four Star, which means we have no context for any of the relationships or storylines that take place there.
2. Tone
All the characters on this show are written in a way that emphasises not only their characterisation and their arcs, but the specific balance of tones that they bring to the show. It’s often backed up with music and visual cues, but more than anything it’s grounded in each of the actors’ performances. Watching these different tones interact is one of the best, most fun parts of the show, embodied probably best of all in Beth and Rio’s incredibly contradictory, and yet somehow still complimentary energy.
As a character, Dean has always had a very, very specific tone about him, and it’s delivered pretty impeccably by Matthew, who - even though I dislike Dean immensely - imbues him with a lot of complexity and satisfying, human contradiction. Dean brings a constantly-close-to-hysteria energy to the show, a fractured, toxic masculinity, and delusions of grandeur, as well as a genuine throughline of real loneliness and insecurity.
In Dean (and Matthew’s) best scenes, the show balances all of this in a way that is both comedic and dramatic, ridiculous and vulnerable. Think about the exceptional “Who is HR?” confrontation at the end of 2.04, his and Beth’s fights across s2, his scene with the spaghetti at the end of 2.12, even his work out in 3.03 (which was by far his best scene this season because it embraced the tone he offers the show).
The scenes with Gayle are completely void of that tone, and as a result, you lose not only the compelling complexity of what makes Dean (and Matthew) so watchable, but also the crux of Dean as a character. With that tone sucked out of those scenes, we’re left with a dryness that doesn’t fly narratively, but especially doesn’t fly with a character that’s so unliked, and on top of that, you lose a key part of the show’s overall balance.
Character tones do evolve - just look at the girls’ - but that’s not what’s happening here. Even beyond that, the show should have, in my opinion, utilised Dean’s tone to better establish what Four Star Pools and Spas is - and they could do it as either a compliment (Boland Motors) or a contradiction (the second dealership he worked at at the end of s2). Either way, it would’ve told us a lot more about the location, how both he and Gayle function in that location, a lot more about what Gayle sees in him, and beyond all of that - it could’ve made those scenes fun.
3. Ione Skye.
I hope this doesn’t come off as too harsh, but on re-watching the series so far last night, I honestly think Ione Skye is unfortunately a big part of the issue. This is such a charismatic cast across the board - from the leads to the supports to the minor characters - and literally all of them have unreal chemistry with each other. In that sense, Ione just sort of...pales in comparison? She doesn’t command the screen in a way the rest of the cast does, doesn’t ground scenes, at least not to me, and she and Matthew just don’t have the chemistry that I think they need to make these scenes and this storyline work.
Like, she’s had as much screen time I’d say as many of the other new cast members like Jackie Cruz (Rhea) and Rob Heaps (Dr Josh Cohen), and certainly more time than Charlyne Yi (Lucy), and yet Gayle as a character hasn’t had the same presence as any of them. The setting and the tone are certainly a part of that, but...I don’t think Ione’s helping.
Particularly with re-watching her in 3.02, I think that a different actress could’ve done something different with the role and with the writing, and probably, dare I say it, something more.

S[Es]sion [No]t[Es]:
I’ve been o[U]t here a while exploring beyond [Th]e F[U]r[Th][Es]t Ring, [Th]e endl[Es]s [No][Th]ingn[Es]s of [Pa][Ra]dox S[Pa]ce between different S[Es]sion’s Medi[U]ms, [Th][At] I sometim[Es] don’t [Th]ink abo[U]t my own S[Es]sion for Wip[Es] [At] a time. It’s been [At] least 413 days since I last visited it, so I fig[U]red [No]w is as good a time as any for me to recap where I c[Am]e [Fr]om.
My n[Am]e is Hrisch Seprex, and I [Am] [Th]e Chief Explorer of Alternia’s Inter-Dimensional [Th]re[At] Ass[Es]sment te[Am]. When [Th]e Alternian Empire learned of [Th]e existence of [Pa][Ra]dox S[Pa]ce, Her Imperial Cond[Es]cension herself decided [Th][At] it m[U]st be inv[Es]tig[At]ed and f[U]lly [U]nderstood to find o[U]t if it was a new [Fr]ontier for Alternia to conq[U]er, or a new b[At]tle[Fr]ont [Th][At] m[U]st be defended against [At] all costs.
[Th][At] was over 612 Sweeps ago. Fo[U]r trolls [U]sed a piece of software masq[U]e[Ra]ding as a g[Am]e to gain acc[Es]s to [Pa][Ra]dox S[Pa]ce, ca[U]sing a massive meteor storm in [Th]e proc[Es]s. Fort[U]n[At]ely, [Th]e Planetary Defense Grid saved [Th]e planet [Fr]om [Th]is fiery s[Pa]ce-born c[At]aclysm, and [Th]e Cond[Es]ce’s military managed to stop [Th]e “G[Am]e” before all fo[U]r trolls co[U]ld enter.
[Th]is g[Am]e expr[Es]sed itself in [Th]e form of an inter-dimensional s[Pa]ce called [Th]e Medi[U]m. It was a planetary system wi[Th] seve[Ra]l planets all inhabited by fantastical alien [Ra]c[Es]. As [Th][Es]e fo[U]r rebel trolls fo[U]nd [Th]eir plans for dimensional crossing being [Th]warted by HIC’s troops, [Th]eir te[Am] coh[Es]ion snapped, and [Th]e goldblooded mastermind behind [Th]e g[Am]e code released a ~ATH vir[U]s [Th][At] killed every[Th]ing in [Th]eir Medi[U]m and [Pa]rtially c[Ra]shed [Th]eir S[Es]sion.
J[U]mping ahead to [Th]e pr[Es]ent, I was recr[U]ited for [Th]e Inter-Dimensional [Th]re[At] Ass[Es]sment te[Am] after discovering a robot [Th][At] had origin[At]ed [Fr]om [Pa][Ra]dox S[Pa]ce. I was told [Th][At] I wo[U]ld be modifying [Th]e g[Am]e code to r[Es]tart [Th]e failed S[Es]sion. On [Th]e orders of [Th]e Cond[Es]ce herself, I wo[U]ld [Th]en have to enter as a player along wi[Th] [Th]e Jadeblooded Hemophage [Fr]om [Th]e original fo[U]r (her Rebellio[U]s Dre[Am]s somewh[At] c[U]rbed after spending h[U]ndreds of Sweeps as a [Po]litical prisoner).
Over all [Th]ose sweeps, o[Th]er trolls had managed to [Pu]rge [Th]e ~ATH vir[U]s [Fr]om [Th]e S[Es]sion and even mapped o[U]t [Th]e Medi[U]m by expeditions [Th][At] made [U]se of a device called a t[Ra]ns[Po]rtalizer [Th][At] had been fo[U]nd in [Th]e r[U]ins of a temple near [Th]e hive of one of [Th]e rebels. [Th]ey were also able to g[At]her all [Th]e b[U]ilding m[At]erials released by [Th]is mass extinction event.
We also fo[U]nd o[U]t [Th][At] [Th]is g[Am]e had been played in m[U]ltiple timelin[Es], and we were somehow considered to be an offshoot b[Ra]nch of wh[At] was considered to be [Th]e “Alpha Timeline”. Except [Th][At] all divergent b[Ra]nch[Es] were s[U]p[Po]sed to wi[Th]er off and die o[U]t, and somehow o[U]rs hadn’t.
We didn’t have e[No][U]gh players to properly r[Es]tart [Th]e s[Es]sion however. [Th]e g[Am]e, which had to be modified to even consider me to be a candid[At]e for being a player, had classepected me as a Rog[U]e of Doom. [Th]e Hemophage prisoner who was to accom[Pa]ny me had originally been classpected as a Maid of Blood, b[U]t after my modific[At]ions, [Th]e g[Am]e was tre[At]ing her as a Knight of S[Pa]ce.
(Nei[Th]er of [Th][Es]e m[At]ched [Th]e classpect of her co[U]nter[Pa]rt in [Th]e “Alpha Timelime”. In fact, [No]ne of [Th]e fo[U]r players did. [Th]is co[U]ld be beca[U]se o[U]r Alternia was so vastly divergent [Fr]om [Th]e o[Th]er [Th]ey were effectively different trolls entirely. [Fr]om wh[At] I [U]nderstand, in [Th]e o[Th]er timeline [Th][At] we have d[At]a on, [Th]ey had a dozen players, instead of o[U]r q[U]artet of rebels.)
[Th]e Cond[Es]ce had forbidden anyone else b[U]t me and [Th]e Rebel Dre[Am]er of a Jadeblood [Fr]om being players in [Th]e r[Es]tart S[Es]sion, so I had to get cre[At]ive. [Th]ro[U]gh some shenanigans involving Time T[Ra]vel and Ectobiology, I was able to make a [Pa][Ra]dox Clone of myself whom [Th]e g[Am]e assigned [Th]e classpect of Prince of Time, giving o[U]r r[Es]tarted S[Es]sion a Time player to go along wi[Th] o[U]r S[Pa]ce player.
One [Th]ing I didn’t co[U]nt on wo[U]ld be my Prince of Time [Pa][Ra]dox Clone [Th]en [U]sing time t[Ra]vel to go back in time and set [U]p all [Th]e divergenc[Es] of o[U]r timeline [Fr]om [Th]e s[U]p[Po]sed “Alpha”, before ret[U]rning to join [Th]e S[Es]sion wi[Th] [U]s. A second [Th]ing I hadn’t seen coming was [Th]e fact [Th][At] [Th]e Ectobiology eq[U]ipment wo[U]ld a[U]tom[At]ically make a second [Pa][Ra]dox Clone, who ended [U]p being classpected as a Seer of Void.
[Th][At] backstory o[U]t of [Th]e way, let me get to [Th]e act[U]al d[Es]cription of my Medi[U]m. As I said, [Th]e Alternian Military had intervened before [Th]e original g[Am]e S[Es]sion was completely started, and all life in [Th]e Medi[U]m was wiped o[U]t.
[Th]e first player to enter was [Th]e goldblooded “Mastermind” behind [Th]e g[Am]e. His split personality manif[Es]ted into two different dre[Am]selv[Es] wi[Th] differing classpects, Heir of Mind and [Pa]ge of [Ra]ge. His planet was [Th]e Land of Flare and Calcite, comprised of clear crystals [Th][At] do[U]ble-re[Fr]act any light. He prototyped his Kernalsprite wi[Th] a dead serverhive. [Th]is had [Th]e effect of making [Th]e [U]nderlings and King and Q[U]een [No]n-mobile, b[U]t if yo[U] got too close to [Th]em yo[U] co[U]ld still be st[U]ng by be[Es].
He was followed by [Th]e rebels’ “M[Es]siah” fig[U]re, a m[U]tant-blooded Mage of Heart. His planet was [Th]e Land of Cherri[Es] and Longing, which s[Po]rted for[Es]ts of cherry-blossom tre[Es]. He prototyped his Kernalsprite wi[Th] [Th]e Blood of his similarly rebellio[U]s Anc[Es]tor, a s[Am]ple of which had been reverse-alchemitized by [Th]e “Mastermind” o[U]t of [Th]e inexplicably tall [Pa]ir of [Pa]nts [Th]e heretical seer of an Anc[Es]tor been wearing [At] his exec[U]tion. Re[Po]rtedly [Th]e plan was to try to [U]se [Th][At] blood to be able to acc[Es]s [Th]ose seer [Po]wers in some way.
[Th]e [Th]ird and final entry of [Th]e original S[Es]sion was [Th]e rebels’ leader, an Oliveblood whom styled herself as “[Th]e Lion[Es]s”. Her classpect was Witch of Bre[At]h, and in an [U]n[U]s[U]al de[Pa]rt[U]re [Fr]om [Th]e p[At]tern for Bre[At]h players, her planet was [Th]e Land of Rivers and Savannah. ([Th]e prevailing [Th]eory [Fr]om [Th]e analysis te[Am] is [Th][At] [Th]e Rivers are standing in for [Th]e [U]s[U]al meteorological phe[No]me[No]n, beca[U]se [Th]ey’re still a close metaphor for Bre[At]h’s [U]nrelenting drive and direction of [Pu]r[Po]se.) She prototyped her Kernalsprite wi[Th] a “Magic C[U]e Ball”, an artifact associ[At]ed wi[Th] [Th]e Green Moonman’s failed rebellion, [Th]e one r[Es][Po]nsible for HIC banning ad[U]lts [Fr]om [Th]e Alternain Homeworld.
Many aspects of [Th]e SGR[U]B Rebellion tried to borrow historical weight [Fr]om [Th]e t[Ra]itors [Th][At] had come before. In addition to [Th]e m[U]tant-blood anc[Es]tor mentioned above, and [Th]eir ti[Es] to [Th]e Green Moonman fig[U]re, [Th]e fact [Th][At] [Th]ere were fo[U]r core conspir[At]ors was an echo of [Th]e Tet[Ra]rchs’ Rebellion [Th][At] had immedi[At]ely preceded [Th]em.
As I had mentioned, [Th]e fo[U]r[Th] player was stopped before she co[U]ld enter. Had my Rebel Dre[Am]er com[Pa]nion, who [At] [Th]e time called herself “[Th]e Primagen” entered, [Th]ere were plans to [U]se a dead M[At]riorb for her Kernalsprite’s prototyping.
When I r[Es]tarted [Th]e S[Es]sion after modifying [Th]e g[Am]e’s code, my initial entry as [Th]e Rog[U]e of Doom gave me [Th]e Land of F[U]sion and Enigmas, a planet littered wi[Th] c[Ra]zy [Am]alg[Am]s of items [Th][At] have been haphazardly combined via [Pu]nchcard alchemy. [Th]is land is also [No]table for [Th]e n[U]mero[U]s faeri[Es] darting [Th]ro[U]gh [Th]e air.
My Jadeblood Rebel Dre[Am]er of a [Pa]rtner was given [Th]e Land of Cobbl[Es]ton[Es] and Pen[U]mb[Ra], an a[Es][Th]etic [Th][At] I feel might better have s[U]ited [Th]e Maid of Blood classpect [Th][At] she’d been originally assigned. As a S[Pa]ce Player, she sho[U]ld have had a land wi[Th] [Fr]ogs instead; [Th]is was [Th]e first evidence [Th][At] my g[Am]e modding had beg[U]n to ca[U]se glitch[Es] in [Th]e g[Am]e’s systems.
For my [Pa][Ra]dox Clone, [Th]e Prince of Time, his planet was [Th]e Land of M[U]shrooms and Perc[U]ssion, a landscape of tree-sized m[U]shrooms, inters[Pa]ced wi[Th] b[U]ilding-sized dr[U]ms, cymbals, and be[At]box[Es] of all kinds, incl[U]ding a snare dr[U]m [Th]e size of a small city. [Th]is is a [Pa]rtic[U]larly hostile planet, as hidden in [Th]e crown of each of [Th]ose giant m[U]shrooms is an explosive [At]omic device, and sho[U]ld a tree topple [Fr]om [Th]e vibr[At]ions of nearby dr[U]mming, [Th]e device deton[At][Es]. Even so, [Th]is Land gave my mission vital inform[At]ion for o[U]r initial navig[At]ion beyond [Th]e F[U]r[Th][Es]t Ring.
As for [Th]e second [Pa][Ra]dox Clone, [Th]e Seer of Void, [Th]e g[Am]e glitched o[U]t entirely when trying to gener[At]e [Th]e planet for his entry, likely [Th]e r[Es][U]lt of all my t[Am]pering wi[Th] [Th]e codebase. Instead of a proper land, he was given a planet-sized Perfectly Generic C[U]be, which [Th]e g[Am]e labelled as [Th]e Land of Perfection and Genericisim.
Yo[U]’ll [No]tice [Th][At] I haven’t mentioned wh[At] prototyp[Es] we gave any of o[U]r Kernelsprit[Es]. [Th][At]’s beca[U]se we waited [U]ntil [Po]st-entry for [Th]e prototyping proc[Es]s. Everyone was in agreement [Th][At] [Th]ree Seprex[Es] were two too many, and we [U]sed a chain of self-prototyping shenanigans to fix [Th][At] problem:
1. All of Seprex’s Dre[Am]selv[Es] were killed. 2. Two of [Th]e Dre[Am]selv[Es] were [U]sed to prototype [Th]e Jadeblood’s Sprite, and [Th]e remaining Dre[Am]self was [U]sed as [Th]e first tier prototype on one of [Th]e Seprex[Es]’ Kernelsprit[Es]. 3. [Th]e Jadeblood’s f[U]lly prototyped Sprite^2 was [Th]en [U]sed as [Th]e second tier prototyping on Seprex’s Sprite, merging all [Th]ree dre[Am]selv[Es] into a com[Po]site Sprite^3. 4. [Th]e Rog[U]e of Doom, Prince of Time, and Seer of Void all were allowed to achieve God Tier, merging wi[Th] [Th]eir dre[Am]selv[Es] into one re[U]nified persona (Yo[U]rs tr[U]ly.)
[Th]is still left two [U][Np]rototyped Kernelsprit[Es]. [Th]e dead singly-prototyped Sprit[Es] [Fr]om [Th]e first s[Es]sion were collected. [Th]e Serverhive Sprite and Magic C[U]e Ball Sprite were prototyped on one of Seprex’s remaining Kernelsprit[Es], reviving [Th]em, incl[U]ding [Th]e fact [Th][At] [Th]ey each had tier two prototyping slots open. [Th]ose two open slots were [Th]en [U]sed to prototype a f[U]lly [U]pg[Ra]ded “[U]ltim[At]e” Alchimeter (wi[Th] integr[At]ed t[Ra]ns[Po]rtalizer & ectobiology f[U]nctions) in [Th]e first slot, and in [Th]e second, [Th]e hardware for AI-DARA (Artificially Intelligent D[At]a Analysis Rec[U]rsive Algori[Th]m) v.2.35, [Th]e Artificial Intelligence reverse engineered [Fr]om two identical robots, one fo[U]nd by [Th]e original SGR[U]B rebels and [Th]en capt[U]red by [Th]e Cond[Es]ce’s troops, and [Th]e o[Th]er one [Th][At] I had fo[U]nd prior to being recr[U]ited.
As for [Th]e final Kernalsprite, it remains [U]n-prototyped back on LOPAG. RD has been promised [Th][At] for her co-oper[At]ion on [Th]e mission, when it is complete, [Th][At] final sprite will be prototyped wi[Th] [Th]e dead sprite belonging to “[Th]e M[Es]siah” of her original player gro[U]p, as well as [Th]e dead m[At]riorb [Th][At] she’d originally wanted to [U]se. It hasn’t yet been decided wh[At] she will be allowed to [Pu]t into [Th]e final prototyping slot [Th][At] will be open. AI-DARA has s[U]gg[Es]ted [Th][At] her newly [U]pg[Ra]ded Sprite form wo[U]ld be [Th]e optimal choice, b[U]t as wi[Th] many [Th]ings abo[U]t my exploring com[Pa]nion, [Th][At]’s [No]t a decision I’m a[U][Th]orized to make.
By ab[U]sing [Th]e prototyping mechanic as we have, we’ve managed to achieve seve[Ra]l [U]sef[U]l benefits. As I [Am] technically RD’s Sprite, she can s[U]mmon me wi[Th] her Sprite Pendant. Similarly, as AI-DARA is technically my sprite, she can be be stored in My Sprite Pendant, giving me [U]lt[Ra]-[Po]rtable acc[Es]s to bo[Th] her k[No]wledge base and predictive f[U]nctions, as well as a whole Phernalia Registry’s wor[Th] of eq[U]ipment.
One o[Th]er c[U]rio[U]s property abo[U]t my home Medi[U]m: While [Th]ere are 7 Planets total in [Th]e system, [No]t co[U]nting Derse and Prospit, [Th]ey are s[Pa]ced in [Th]eir orbits between Skaia and Veil as if [Th]ere were 8. RD has taken [Th]is as a sign [Th][At] o[U]r s[Es]sion was meant to have a Land of {something} and [Fr]ogs, b[U]t we have to find one and bring it back. I do [No]t disco[U][Ra]ge her independent search for [Th]is, as s[U]ch activity still aligns wi[Th] o[U]r mission.

“Hey Dr. Void, I uh, brought you some cookies to thank you for including me in the recent jail break. They’re double chocolate fudge, I know they’re your favorite.” I set down the tray of cookies. Dr. Void says nothing but having a black hole for a face tends to keep conversation to a minimum. But they reduce the gravitational matrix of their void as I walk away so I know they’re appreciative. I head to the hench wing of villain HQ to drop off a card for Addison to congratulate them on the birth of their first kid. On my way I see the newest villain, Pulverizer, moving boxes into his new lair. “ Pulverizer! Great work with turning Mt. Rushmore to rubble! I just wanted to welcome you to the Malevolence Mansion and congratulate you on joining the Consortium of Corruption.” He smirks, “Ha! Ain’t you that runt who can’t pay his own dues?” I give a cursory chuckle, “ Well it is true my latest schemes have been, uh, less than profitable. The rest of the fellas have been kind enough to chip in when they can”. He barks a riotous laugh, “What a joke! They ‘otta make an example of y-“. With a flash and a bang and the smell of ozone I see Murdertron through the falling ashes of Pulverizer. Her ion beams rapidly cool and fold back into her mechanical body. [ Protocol: //only_friend successful, standing down] and she continues clanging down the corridor. I make a note to send a condolence letter to Pulverizer’s henches and continue on my way.
You are a truly pathetic villain. Ordinary police regularly overpowers you and heroes do not even bother fighting you. Yet the villains still allow you to remain among their ranks, because you are just so goddamn likeable.

some classpects (plus dreamselves) for Game of Dice characters
Ion: Knight of Time (Derse)
Mary: Witch of Space (Prospit)
Black Rose: Thief of Void (Derse)
Sharon: Seer of Light (Derse)
Dr. X: Prince of Space (??? - heroes of Space are automatically Prospit dreamers but Prospit isn’t a very fitting dream kingdom for Dr. X; he’s more fitting for Derse and it’s not because one kingdom is good or evil, neither are aligned as such, where you dream doesn’t determine if you’re good or evil)
Kaito: Mage of Mind (Prospit)

The Armoury of the Squat Leagues
RANGED WEAPONS:
*Shot Weapons - “Squats do regularly use simple ballistic weapons like other more primitive races do, however their mastery of metals allows them to use materials much more exotic than lead or copper for their projectiles. Their standard military armament involves weapons that fire high-density buckshot at their opponent with a high degree of stopping power yet little risk of collateral damage to starship internals or cavern walls.”
-Shot weapons range from commonly seen Shot Rifles, Shot Carbines and Shot Pistols to more specialized variants like the Shot Cannon and Auto-Shot Rifle to vehicle mounted versions like the Rotary Shot Cannon and the Heavy Rotary Shot Cannon.
-The League of Thor has developed a special type of ammunition for their shot rifles: Slug Rounds. Sacrificing the spread of the buckshot rounds for more Armor Penetration, they are most commonly used amongst Thor’s own Longbeard Ranger scouts and their specially made Slug Rifles and Slug Pistols.
(tl;dr the Squats main weapons are basically AA-12s of varying sizes and barrel lengths)
-Combi-Weapons: The Squats also make common use of combi-weapons, only using their own shot weaponry instead of a boltgun. Another key difference is that the Squat combi-weapons can be made from either Shot Rifles or Shot Carbines. The Squats use Combi-Ion, Combi-Fusion, Combi-Seismic, and Combi-Coil weapons.
*Fusion Projectors - Fusion Projectors are remarkable flame based weapons that are both more elegant and potent than the flamers wielded by the other species of the galaxy. They can be used to incinerate a swath of targets like a regular flamer or focus their jet into a searing cutting arc. Fusion Projectors come in five sizes of both increasing power and energy consumption.
-These sizes are the Light Fusion Projector, which is pistol sized; the Fusion Projector, approximate the size of an Imperial Meltagun; the Heavy Fusion projector, roughly analogous to the Heavy Flamer or Multi-melta in terms of size; the Clearance Fusion Projector, which is commonly mounted on vehicles; and the Super-Heavy Fusion Projector, used on only the heaviest of vehicles.
Coil Weaponry - Squats have long worked and experimented with magnetism, a useful science to invest oneself into when one works with metal and electricity so frequently. Whereas the Tau's experiments into magnetic projectiles lead them down the path of railguns, the Squats wanted a weapon less temperamental, finding that the swift process of wearing that Railguns undergo made them undesirable. The coil gun, which operates under similar principles if different methods; proved to be more to their liking. Very capable of penetrating through armor, though their small projectile size meant that they impart little of their kinetic energy into a target, though it also means that they have rather manageable recoil, easily allowing the stout squats to fire them on the move.
-Their sizes range from the small Coil Pistols, to the SMG-like Coil Repeaters and the long-barrelled Coil Cannons, to the vehicle mounted Heavy and Super-Heavy Coil Cannons
* Squat Missiles and the Cyclone Missile Launcher - Squats can use explosive ordnance just as other races do, though their mastery of demolitions tends more towards civilian purposes rather than commonplace battlefield use. However, their technology is unique enough that the Imperium has attempted to duplicate some of their designs for their own use.
-The three most common missile types used in the Squat’s missile launchers are the standard Frag and Krak missiles, and the Mole Missile, which first launches into the air and then burrows under the earth before popping up in the middle of the target’s area, detonating and sending shrapnel around a certain area.
*Ion weaponry - Many Squats Leagues maintain a close relation with the Demiurg, offering the void-dwellers a reliable source of trade. One of the items the Squats received was Ion technology, which they received many millennia before it was been traded regularly with the Tau Empire. The Ion Weapons of the Squats may be appear to be older and less refined in design, but they are just as effective as those used by the Tau Empire. They also operate in the same manner, having two modes of fire: a Standard fire mode and an Overcharged variant.
-this class of weapons range from the Ion Pistol, Ion Rifle and Ion Cannon (which are the infantry weapons) to the vehicle-mounted Long-Barreled Ion Cannon and the super heavy Ion Annihilator
*Seismic/Tremor-weaponry - Immensely useful for the mining focused life styles of the squats due to their ability to casually shake apart even the hardest of earth without creating the heady smoke that a laser would, sonic technology is something the squats have thoroughly studied and developed. Though humans and Eldar also make use of the technology, the squats have made it a ubiquitous technology. Vibrations can create earthquakes or reshape the terrain, increase the effectiveness of melee weapons more cheaply than power fields, allow for easy subterranean ambushes, shake apart structures and vehicles, and reduce infantry to pulp.
-this class of weapon has no pistol variant, with Rifle, Cannon, Heavy Cannon and Lance variants existing. The Thudd Gun commonly used by their forces also utilized Seismic Technology, and the Vibro-Gun often used by Guild Engineers use a similar principle to Seismic weapons.
MELEE WEAPONS:
*Heavy Chainaxe - A larger and heavier versions of the traditional Chainaxe, these weapons hit much harder and deal serious wounds to anyone who is stupid enough to not bring proper protection. Originally designed during inter-hold Squat conflicts to deal with warriors armed in iridium-based armour, later they were re-purposed to combat heavily armoured non-Squats such as both Space Marines, Ork Warbosses, and Tau Battlesuits.
*Forge Weapons - These oversized weapons take the form of axes, hammers and occasionally greatswords. Made from alloys of magnesium they have a favorable tendency to spark when they strike a target, potentially setting them ablaze. However, due to the reactivity of such alloys the weapons require a great deal of care to maintain; therefore a Squat will take great pride in his Forge Weapon and will become greatly offended if the weapon is mistreated by others.
-Of all the leagues, the League of Vostarg most commonly uses Forge Weaponry, due to the areas of intense heat they live in and because Forge Weapons are often associated with Grimnir, as fire falls under his purview.
*Mining Tools - As incredibly prolific miners, a good deal of the mining equipment used by the Squats can also function as effective weapons of war. Drills, picks, saws and other assorted tools can break flesh, armor and vehicle hulls just as easily as solid rock. These tools are the Rock Cutter, Rock Drill, Rock Saw, Lascutter, Power Pick, and Demolition Charges.
*Macro-Hammer - These sophisticated hammers incorporate a number of nano-sized warp portals in the hammer-head that burst on contact, causing a localized warp disruption. How they are able to accomplish this utterly insane feat nobody knows; not even the Squats of various leagues know, though there are many theories. The most logical (and likely) explanation is that the Macro Hammers are from the Dark Age of Technology. They are large, hit hard and extremely heavy, and can topple over even large machines and vehicles such as Deff Dreads, or pulverise monstrous beasts such as Carnifexes. As such, these weapons are incredibly valuable and very rare to find except amongst the most wealthy of the leagues, such as Thor or Barak. When these weapons are taken into battle, it is usually in the most dire of circumstances.
*Servo-Arm/Servo-Harness - commonly utilized by the Guild Engineers, these tools are almost identical to those used by the Imperium’s Techpriests and Techmarines.
SPECIAL ISSUE WARGEAR:
*Squat Exo-Armour - The Squats routinely use an armour-class similar to Terminator armour for heavy duty civilian applications such as deep space repair or internal reactor maintenance, whereas Terminator armor is a priceless relic to the Imperium, the Squats make quite casual usage of their Exo-Armor, and the Squats are proud of boasting that they have more far more Exo-Armour wearers than the Imperium has space marines.
-Overdrive systems - The Squats are well aware that they are not the most numerous of people, though they are a hearty race, their most frequent foes often vastly outnumber them. The Green tides of the hated Orks, the rabble of Chaos and Daemonkind, and worst of all the snarling and vicious swarms of the Krakandra; or the Tyranids as the Imperium calls them; and more can all outnumber a Squat force. So a solution was proposed for the users of their suits of Iridium and Exo-armor, gravitic generators built into their suits increase the momentum of the wearer and therefore generate a more devastating impact when they enter melee combat.
*Squat Iridium Armour - Though this high density metal has been recently developed for armour-use by the rising Tau Empire, the Squats have been utilizing this in their technology for millennium, albeit with a lesser level of technical sophistication. It is NOT a variant of Exo-Armor; in fact, it bears more of a resemblance to Artificer Armor common used by the Space Marines.
*Rune Stones - Though the Squats do not have prolific Psykers as humans or Eldar do, they do know enough of the Warp to have the means to counter witchery and daemonic power. Often made from the rarest and most durable material avaliable, warding runes are then carved into it, forming a Rune Stone.
*Survey Glass - Survey Glasses are eyepieces that are capable of multiple levels of magnification and even possesses multiple vision modes such as NV, Infared, Temperature, etc. Originally developed to help find rich ores of minerals, it, like many mining tools of the Squats, was eventually adapted for combat. Survey Glasses are now often equipped with targeting systems to assist in ranged combat.
*Battle Standard - Often taken into battle by the more traditionalist leagues like Durin, Valkyrea, or Thor, Standards are often beautifully woven and designed; They are colorful tapestries that rival the Chapter Standards of the Space Marines in terms of iconography. A Thane who is chosen to bear the Standard of his or her Stronghold will find themselves elevated above the other Thanes of their Stronghold.
*The Squats also equip themselves with various pieces of technology traded with the Imperium, such as Flak Armor, Carapace Armor, Force Fields, Refractor Fields, Chameleon Cloaks, Boarding Shields, Combat Shields and Digital Weapons
NOTE:
*many of the Leagues utilize unique weaponry and wargear seen only amongst their kind; as such, these will be detailed in a separate entry.
*VEHICLES AND THE WEAPONRY UNIQUE TO EACH WILL ALSO BE DETAILED IN THE NEXT ENTRY
once again, this is mainly taken from Codex - Squats on 1d4chan.com. so check them out if you’re interested! I’ll probably be doing the Military Units of the squats before finally finishing up the leagues.
Sorry if some of the science doesn’t make any sense -- I’m a lore guy, not a science guy.
ALSO SERIOUSLY GUYS TELL ME WHAT YOU LIKE ABOUT THIS, WHAT YOU DISLIKE ABOUT THIS, ETC; I NEED FEEDBACK IN ORDER TO IMPROVE ON HOW I WRITE AND I CAN ONLY GET IT WHEN YOU REBLOG AND POST YOUR THOUGHTS.
I KNOW I SAY THIS A LOT BUT IT’S INCREDIBLY FRUSTRATING WHEN A BUNCH OF PEOPLE JUST LIKE AND REBLOG MY POSTS WITHOUT SAYING ANYTHING
thanks for reading this, and i hope you all have a wonderful evening/day/morning!!!

story time?? ig??? @seroluvbot
so ion really like asleep methods, and the few times that i've tried them they never really worked much besides sometimes leading to a lucid dream, where i'd try opening a portal like fucking dr. strange (and i'd only get halfway). and i was in the process of an awake method, but i ended up rolling over and just going to sleep while listening to a guided meditation with rain and thunder sounds.
i woke up at like. 10 AM, promptly passed out, and lo and behold, it was a lucid dream. i was walking around my neighborhood with my sister, only there were a few differences that didn't line up (such as the houses to the right side of the road being completely different). she offered that we go somewhere and summoned a cab, but rather than getting in, an escalator suddenly appeared, and we climbed on that instead. it lifted us to a door, and through that door was ANOTHER escalator that lead us through a business building with glass pane railings separating us from the bottom floor.
we got to another door, which opened up into this endless white void. it showed us a bunch of apps, then tv shows and movies, and ig my sister still had the intention to go somewhere and somehow KNEW that we could just travel to any of the places presented to us.
after just a few seconds i honed in on the sandman title, hearing morpheus' voice echo out, and i figured "oh, be chill about it, since she doesn't know you've seen it yet. just be like 'hey i heard the sandman was good, let's go there'" and IMMEDIATELY afterword, it was like i closed my eyes, and i was laying in the starfish position and spinning rapidly.
now i've felt the spinning symptom before, but this was different. it literally felt like i was on one of those spinny gravity rides where you lay on a mat and it spins so fast that you don't have to hold yourself up—you just stick to the wall. AND THEN I OPENED MY EYES AND I WAS IN A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT ROOM??? the style reminded me of roderick burgess' (ew) house, yet less decorative, and it was completely beige. and i was super dizzy from that spinning feeling so my vision was lowkey blurring, but i still did my best to ground myself.
i think my subconscious had sort of decided for myself that i needed something familiar to stay grounded, so when i blinked, the room shifted into the attic in my CR, before it was renovated (the floor was all carpet, and there was less furniture, if any at all). i braced my hands on the wall and tried affirming to myself and doing my five senses, but RIGHT after i had said "i can feel the wall", i heard my mom telling me to let her in.
i couldn't see her, but i knew she was down the stairs toward the laundry room which is below the attic, and i did not expect her to be there, so i panicked and started looking for a way out. i was ready to just open the window (which is three floors up, mind you) and climb down, but i think hearing my mom freaked me out too much and i woke up
um. ur,rmm................,,
#scratches head. this has never happened before#UNLESS i count that one time i was trying to shift and accidentally opened my eyes to see a wall of bright green leaves.#and also morpheus' floating head smiling down at me....weird asf

Voltron fanfic: “Scattered” Chapter 8
Season 2 AU. No ships, K+ to T rating. Begin at the beginning here.
Darzi practically danced with rage as the monitors’ rhythm slowed noticeably.
“Not again! Did you give him the adrenaline yet? Add more!”
Perkins looked at the monitors, evaluating the information they provided. He then took a long look at the youth on the gurney. Bruises were already starting to form on his face, making the wound from a previous split lip even darker. Perkins reached over and opened one of the boy’s eyes. The eye, an unusual dark violet color, was badly bloodshot from the strain of fighting for air.
“Do you realize how close you came to killing him?”
“All I did was stop him from making noise! Wake him now! Add more adrenaline!”
Perkins took another look around, this time focusing on his colleague sprawled on the floor, unconscious from a drugged cup of coffee. “I haven’t started the amotrazephine yet.”
“What? But his vitals slowed, just like before!”
Perkins shook his head. “That reaction didn’t happen until the second dose, according to the report I read. There’s something else going on here, like he’s found a way to withdraw physically and mentally from the situation. I’ve read about catatonia, but I’ve never witnessed a case personally and I’ve never heard of anyone being able to control it like this.”
“Well, then, use the adrenaline first! Or another stimulant! Or get the defibrillator and run some volts through him!”
Perkins moved to stand between Darzi and the boy. “Sir, you are out of control. I understand that you want answers, but you are overstepping a line here.”
“Now you listen here—”
“No, you listen.” Perkins used his height advantage to advance and tower over the older man. “I will summon backup from security guards who aren’t in your squad and press for a tribunal in which I will testify unless you back off now.”
Darzi opened his mouth to respond but was interrupted by the floor trembling under his feet. A growl thundered, echoing through the entire building. Perkins swallowed uneasily, but held his ground. “Seems like someone agrees with me. Now, you get those two guards of yours to carry Desai to her quarters. I am going to do a full blood workup and cellular scan for Mr. Kogane, which should have been done in the first place. I will stay with him until he returns. You will stay the hell away from him and I will share any information I am able to obtain.”
“But—”
“Lieutenant General, you are being handed the perfect bad-cop-good-cop opportunity here, not to mention the chance to hide how close you came to murdering a defenseless civilian. I suggest you use them.”
Darzi gulped and backed out of the room.
Once he was alone, Perkins pulled out his personal mobile and sent a quick text: YOUR SUSPICIONS CORRECT. SUBJECT NEARLY LOST. PROBLEM HEADED OFF FOR NOW.

On approach to the far side of the planet, Hunk racked his brain furiously for ideas. Shiro and Keith were the best combat strategists of the team. Pidge was the tech-head and Lance just tried whatever came into his head, which worked more often than it should. Hunk was the nuts-and-bolts guy, the one who could build it. Everything he knew from flight combat training at the Garrison involved teams working together. And right now he was very much alone.
He felt a growl in his head.
Okay, not alone, exactly. But severely lacking in the support personnel department.
That earned him a purr that was almost a chuckle.
The display showed one warship near the southern pole of New Metrea, as Hunk sometimes called it in his head, while the other two were much farther north. After a brief debate, he decided to spend his coin of surprise on the two ships together. If he were very lucky, he might be able to disable the ion cannon on one of the ships with his first strike. And it was much better if any immediate reinforcements consisted of one ship rather than two.
We have got to get those cloaking devices of Pidge’s on the rest of the Lions.
Agreed.
As they cleared the horizon, Hunk brought up the Lion’s jaw blades and put on as much speed as possible. The Galra clearly were not expecting any problems and their weapons did not start firing until he was well within visual range. Flying straight and true, they went for the ion cannon of the near ship, scoring into its side up the entire length.
The ion cannon exploded behind them. Hunk whooped and banked, trying for the same strategy on the other ship. But someone on that ship had quicker reflexes and the Yellow Lion bounced off a particle barrier.
“Have I ever mentioned how much I hate quiznaking FORCE FIELDS?” Hunk’s voice rose in frustration.
Both warships had launched fighters and now Hunk had to concentrate on staying out of the way and letting as few energy bolts hit him as possible. He tried to imitate some of the evasive tactics he had seen Shiro and Keith use, but the Yellow Lion was just too slow for some of the pinpoint maneuvers. After a lot of shoving fighters into each other, he found some success in flying between the warships, causing havoc when the attacks started taking each other out in ‘friendly fire’. The close quarters made it easier to drive fighters into the hull of a warship and the numbers started going down steadily.
Beware! The other ship is on the way!
He was distracted just enough as he tried to think of a way to compensate for the new aggression that he slowed momentum. And those damnably clever Galra took the opportunity and moved closer to one another, catching Yellow and pinning him between them. Hunk felt the Lion shudder as they closed in.
“NO! Come on, work loose!” Hunk pulled the steering poles, trying to break the pincer hold, but the only response was an ominous groaning of metal. He opened the communications screen.
“Hunk to Voltron Team, I need help! Galra attack at my location!”
“We read you, Hunk! On our way!” Shiro’s voice was the most beautiful thing Hunk had ever heard.
He braced himself in the cockpit as more metal creaked. “Come on, come on, come on, we can do this! I won’t let you die this way!”
As he spoke, he felt a flood of warm, yellow-gold energy surge through him and something seemed to break through a barrier he hadn’t known existed. A new strength filled him and he pushed with that strength.
And the Yellow Lion braced inside a new layer of heavy armor, massive claws slashing at the warships holding him in place.
“Oh, hell yes!”
<> <> <> <> <>
He was safe here. Here there were no attacks, no questions, no probing. Here only held himself and his Other. She surrounded him with soft warmth, soothing and comforting him.
I have you, my Paladin. I can protect you for a little while. But you need to let me help you.
There was a reason…what was it? His Other could indeed protect his physical body as well as his true self, but there was a reason. She protected him, but he also protected her. What was he protecting her from?
I can be careful, Paladin.
That was it. Fear that if she caused unnecessary casualties that she would be captured and possibly destroyed. He had to prevent that.
I have to protect you, too.
The enemy was afraid. Fear was a poor basis for making a rational decision. She had pointed that out herself. It made her unhappy that he was using her words against her, but she conceded the point.
Go back, my Paladin. I think you are safe for the moment.
He trusted her. He trusted her more than any entity in the universe. But he still asked, because it was his nature to ask: Are you sure?
Yes. You are safe for the moment, my cub.

Allura stepped between the steering poles of the Castle-ship and began entering the coordinates for Arus. Part of her was almost giddy in anticipation of reuniting Pidge with her family. Another part of her was already planning arguments to leave the Holts there while they retrieved Hunk and Keith. Pidge’s father was a master organizer and would be able to begin the process of either assisting former slaves home or helping them settle with the Arusians. Her thoughts were suddenly interrupted as a communication screen popped up, showing a frantic Hunk.
“Hunk to Voltron Team, I need help! Galra attack at my location!”
“We read you, Hunk! On our way!” Shiro shot to his feet and moved to his elevator. “Lance, tell Dr. Holt to pass the word for everyone to stay in place and get to your Lion!”
“Copy!”
Allura quickly switched gears and focused her willpower on the Yellow Lion. Coordinates sprang up on the screen and her fingers dashed over the controls before moving to the steering poles. “Ready for wormhole!”
Coran set his controls. “Go!”
The Castle-ship dove through the ring into the inky purple void.
<> <> <> <> <>
The warships had sprung apart enough with the appearance of the Yellow Lion’s super-armor that they were free again. Hunk guided the front paws gleefully, the new enormous claws positively shredding the hull of the nearer ship.
“Oh, let’s see what these can do to a force field!” They shot over to the ion cannon and swiped. A gratifying series of cracks appeared. Hunk shifted the controls and tried driving the outstretched claws into the field. The web of cracks widened and Hunk backed up and fired his lasers at the weak spot.
The force field popped like a soap bubble.
“Yeah! That was so much easier! Let’s slice and dice this cannon!”
The Lion’s claws penetrated and ripped, tearing the cannon loose from its base, and Hunk whooped with triumph.
PALADIN!
The blast from the newly-arrived third ion cannon sent him spinning out of control.
<> <> <> <> <>
The second they exited the wormhole, Allura brought the particle barrier up. Two Lions shot out of their hangars and made straight for the cluster of Galra ships.
“Hunk, where are you?”
“SSSHHHIIIIIRRRRROOOOOOOO!!!”
“There he is! He just crashed into the bridge of the near ship!”
“Good job, Lance! Let’s see if we can run those two ships together. Princess, can you keep the third ship busy for just a few minutes?”
“On it!”
“Hunk, do you copy? We’re going to try and ram the two ships together! Can you maneuver?”
“Yeah…yeah, we’re okay!”
“Whoa, Hunk! What happened to your Lion? It’s like, mecha-zoided!”
Hunk steered the Yellow Lion over toward Lance’s side. “It’s great, isn’t it? It just kind of happened when I needed it most.”
“Okay, you two! Push!”
With Black on one side and Blue and Yellow on the other, they gripped edges of the ship hulls with their teeth and fired thrusters. Slowly, the two ships ground together and explosions erupted all over them. As a particularly large firecloud erupted over the propulsion system of one ship and leapt to the other, Shiro disengaged.
“That’s got those taken care of. Let’s get the third!”
The three Lions flew to where the Castle-ship was in a standoff, slowly losing the protection of the particle barrier with repeated blasts from the Galra ion cannon. The strikes from the Castle-ship had done some damage, but not landed a crippling blow.
“Jawblades, everyone! Start with weapons systems and engines!”
It was a matter of minutes to disable the final ship. As Hunk relaxed, the heavy armor on the Yellow Lion winked out of existence and he patted the handles of his steering columns. “You really came through. Thanks.”
<> <> <> <> <>
Back at the village, Pidge settled into the partially rebuilt hut that the Arusians had assigned her. She pulled off her helmet and outer layer of armor, debating whether she could borrow the Arusians’ bathhouse before going to sleep and possibly find some spare clothing and try to clean her under-armor. Someone had left a plate of snacks for her and she was touched to see that whoever it was had paid attention and assembled her favorite examples of Arusian cuisine.
She began pulling out some of the equipment she would need to start the Galra glove project. She set her repaired power source out and dug around for a solar cell she had spotted before. She jury-rigged a connection and quickly verified that the setup was compatible. Now she would be able to keep the Galra power source charged as she worked on other things. She pulled out a disembodied sentry hand and began dismantling it.
In her concentration, Pidge completely missed that there were voices coming from her helmet on the other side of the room. She felt a nudge in her head. “Huh? What is it, girl? Is something happening?”
She retrieved her helmet and put it on. She blinked in surprise at hearing Shiro direct Lance and Hunk in mopping up some stray fighters. “Wait, what happened?”
Allura replied, “Hunk ran into some Galra warships and we had to go help him. Is everything all right with you?”
“Yeah, no problems at all.”
“Good. I think we’re going to have to arrange for these refugees to go elsewhere. We have to assume someone reported their presence.”
“It’s okay. I’ve got plenty here to keep me busy.” And the longer you take to get here is more time I can use to go through the prisoner database.
“Thank you, Pidge. Allura out.”
Pidge removed the helmet and frowned. Surely there was a better way to maintain communication between them than wearing the helmets all the time? Allura used those earrings of hers, but Pidge expected at least one of the boys would object to that.
Maybe an earpiece analog? But if it’s something we wear all the time, we’d have to find a way to make it detect when we have our helmets on so we don’t get double audio when we wear them. Maybe a wrist mount would be better.
She felt the Green Lion’s curiosity at the idea and smiled, mentally shuffling her project list.
<> <> <> <> <>
Keith returned to himself and as was now habit, kept his eyes closed and body still while he listened and assessed. He was still immobilized. The room was quiet, but at least one person was shuffling around. While he waited, he heard glass clinking against metal and the sound of fingers on a keyboard.
Someone approached and Keith couldn’t prevent himself from flinching when they made contact with his arm. A hand touched his forehead, smoothing his hair back.
“Easy, son. Everything’s okay for the moment. Just putting this bandage in place. Drew a bit of blood to run an analysis, make sure there aren’t any nasty alien bugs hiding in there.”
Keith held rigid and still. He opened his eyes to see the medtech that had entered with Darzi and recoiled from him again. The man leaned over, examining his face.
“I’ll get something for your eyes and that mark on your mouth. Can’t really do anything for the bruising, but it’ll fade in a few days. My name’s Perkins, by the way. I’ll be keeping an eye on you for a while.”

MOFs MOFs MOFs
On November 19th, Dr. Jeremy Reimer, chair of the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department at the University of California, Berkeley, presented his research on Metal Organic Frameworks (MOFs) and their capacity for selectively absorbing CO2 emissions from the atmosphere. The ultimate goal of this research is the development of effective MOF materials for carbon capture applications-- such technology is thought to prove extremely useful in combating the rising levels of Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Earth’s atmosphere and their consequent effects on global warming and climate change.
In his talk, Professor Reimer explained that MOFs are a class of compounds that “consist of metal ions or clusters coordinated to organic ligands to form one-, two-, or three-dimensional structures” (“Metal-organic frameworks,” Wikipedia). Generally, these compounds contain voids and constitute a coordination network which is a compound which extends in at least one dimension through repeating coordination entities-- a single repeating unit involving the coordinated complex of an organic structure and metal ion. The voids-- or pores-- of these structures are what enable MOFs to effectively sequester compounds in a broad variety of applications including gas purification, gas separation, and catalysis in addition to atmospheric carbon dioxide sequestration. The challenge in specifically tailoring these structures to carbon dioxide sequestration is identifying how best to exclusively fit the carbon dioxide target in the designed void while effectively preventing the MOFs from also picking up water, nitrogen, and oxygen, which are crucial elements in the atmosphere which are necessary for healthy ecosystems across the planet.
Dr. Reimer was specifically focused on the “end-game” possibility of engineering large grids of material containing these MOFs and strategically placing them to maximize carbon dioxide removal from the atmosphere. While the relevance of this research (and its salient application in preventing--or perhaps only slowing-- the 6th mass extinction this planet is now facing) to this course may not be readily apparent from the discussion at the seminar, there is notable entanglement between the implementation of this MOFs technology and control systems theory. After all, synthesis of these structures is a delicate operation, as discussed by Dr. Reimer, and must be tightly controlled in order to ensure optimal production of these complicated frameworks. Dr. Reimer touched upon the intricacies of MOFs synthesis, but to more fully explore how these processes are achieved and regulated, I did a literature search for papers discussing control and optimization of conditions for MOF synthesis.
A paper published this October by Feng et al. entitled “Controllable Synthesis of Metal-Organic Frameworks and Their Hierarchical Assemblies” investigates exactly these challenges (Feng, 2019). This group specifically targeted acceleration of the nucleation stage of MOF formation to promote uniform size amongst the resulting particles. They describe their effects to achieve this acceleration through tuning of the reactant concentration and synthetic conditions. In one set of experiments, researchers varied the energy source provided to overcome the activation energy barrier of the nucleation stage of MOFs synthesis-- specifically, they employed microwaves, ultrasound, and electric heating and observed the resulting uniformity of the synthesized MOFs particles. Through these comparative experiments, ultrasound was identified as the optimal energy source for ensuring increased uniformity of synthesized MOFs.
Here we find the salient connection to control system theory. In light of these conclusions made by Feng et. al, the value of highly tunable ultrasound systems is evident: by developing responsive and tunable equipment, improved synthesis of uniform MOFs particles may be achieved. The ability to synthesize highly engineered, effective MOFs particles with significant selectivity and yield is ultimately crucial for the widespread deployment of MOFs technology for the sequestration of atmospheric carbon dioxide. Research into control systems for ultrasound technology has been conducted in the setting of wastewater treatment for the purpose of inactivating E. coli bacteria (Ohrdes, 2018). A PI-controller was employed in this system to modulate the behavior of the ultrasound output in response to feedback regarding the level of contamination in the wastewater.
Through these experiments, researchers concluded that sonication of the system and the amplitude of the vibration effectively changed system conditions and introduced a transient element to system characteristics that needed to be accounted for in continuous ultrasound treatment. The frequency responses of the system essentially demonstrated that “the system is markedly dependent on the process itself and is thus nonlinear, leading to a challenging control task” (Ohrdes, 2018). This insight into the control of ultrasound systems is extremely valuable-- while the context is not the same, understanding shortcomings of previous attempts to control this equipment in other settings informs future control of this technology in the application of accelerated MOFs nucleation as described by Feng et. al.
One of the most interesting conclusions from this brief investigation is the distance that lies between perfection of a technology and its implementation-- just because researchers like Dr. Reimer are approaching optimized MOFs for selective carbon sequestration from the atmosphere doesn’t mean that the technology is ready to be deployed. There is a practical transition phase-- the scaling up of these novel materials is non-trivial. Going from a bench-scale to a pilot plant-- if we use a Chemical Engineering metaphor-- is a non-linear process and must be approached from an engineer’s perspective with practical considerations concerning feasible implementation in mind. In the case of scaling-up production of these highly-engineered MOFs, these practical considerations include ensuring highly uniform production of these engineered MOFs, which will most likely necessitate the deployment of ultrasound technology. The large-scale implementation of this ultrasound technology for selective and rapid MOFs formation must be carefully engineered, and so must its control system. All of this foundational work, while often behind the scenes, is crucial. Once again, we see how fundamental control system theory is in a global context of engineering advancements and contributions to humanity. We can’t save the planet without those PID controllers!

2018 Was a Damn Good Year for Right to Repair
The battle over Right to Repair is happening all over the world—and it’s being fought by some unlikely suspects: farmers, mechanics, and even mainstream media moguls have joined the repair ranks this year.
Thanks to the widespread efforts of repair rebels everywhere, 2018 was a record year for Right to Repair—not too shabby for an issue that rose to prominence almost exclusively through the grassroots efforts of netizens and tinkerers. One by one, we’re beating down the barriers to self-repair, even if it just means getting exposure to the issues facing ownership. And while there’s still a long, hard battle ahead, I wanted to take a minute to recognize some of the biggest moments in Right to Repair of 2018:
1. Why you don’t own your tech
Adam Ruins Everything put together this fantastic explainer about the current state of the repair industry. It’s a wonderful recap that shows exactly what devious techniques greedy tech manufacturers are using to monopolize the repair industry. And it includes horses.
2. The Feds are on your side: You’ve got a license to tinker
I’d bet good money that you’ve run into a “warranty void if removed” sticker at some point in your device-owing career. Turns out, those stickers are not only unenforceable—they’re illegal under the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. This federal law was put in place to protect the rights of consumers and imposes strict guidelines on manufacturers that offer product warranties. While the law has been in place since 1975, it’s been largely ignored by manufacturers without penalty—until now. This year, the Feds sent warning letters to tech giants including Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, Hyundai, HTC, and ASUS.
3. Washington Post urges big tech to adopt safer batteries
Lithium-ion batteries are inside a lot of the things we own: smartphones, e-cigarettes, cars, children’s toys. Pound for pound, they’re incredibly efficient—packing a high energy density that other types of rechargeable batteries can’t reach. They’ve enabled the tech industry to make devices thinner than ever by sealing these rechargeable packs inside of our favorite devices. But this wonder-material comes at a cost. And Geoffrey Fowler of The Washington Post published a well-researched exploration of the massive problems for recyclers caused by built-in batteries.
4. This 17-year-old student is demanding repair reform
Surya Raghavendran started his own third-party repair shop after an expensive and unsuccessful repair experience at Apple. Next on his to-do list? Getting a Right to Repair bill passed in his home state of Michigan.
5. Linus and Louis Rossman take on the “unfixable” iMac Pro
Linus bought an iMac. Linus broke that iMac. Linus went to an Apple store to get his iMac repaired. Apple refused to fix Linus’ iMac—and refuses to sell iMac parts. So, two of the greatest tech YouTubers of all time teamed up to try their hands at repairing the “unfixable” iMac Pro. How’d they do?
6. The rogue mechanic resurrecting dead Teslas
What do you do when Tesla won’t service your salvaged vehicle? Well, if you’re Rich Benoit, the self-proclaimed “Dr. Frankenstein of Teslas,” you spend years learning how to restore it—with parts from other wrecked Teslas.
7. Copyright Office issues sweeping Right to Repair reforms
Section 1201 of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) has been notorious for stripping away the freedom of security researchers, cell phone recyclers, and farmers alike. Fortunately, Congress built an escape hatch into section 1201, allowing citizens to petition for exemptions to the broad law every three years. 2018 was one of those years, and the US Copyright Office released their final ruling that issued groundbreaking exemptions to digital rights management (DRM) and embedded software lock components of 1201.
8. One small step for smartphones, one giant leap for repairability
Most manufacturers don’t want you to fix your stuff. Motorola’s not like most manufacturers. This year, Motorola became the first major smartphone manufacturer ever to supply OEM parts to iFixit. Learn more about our partnership.
9. Meet Eric Lundgren, the E-Waste Refurbisher Microsoft Helped Send to Prison
Our friend Eric Lundgren was sentenced to prison for duplicating OEM Dell restore CDs. After losing his last appeal, Eric now faces 15 months in Federal prison and a hefty $50,000 fine. Eric argues that he was just trying to keep PCs out of the landfill—and since Dell offers up those restore discs to freely download, he thought he was on the right side of the law
10. Copyright law is screwing your Right to Repair
Hardware manufacturers are using every dirty trick in the book to keep you from repairing your stuff. We don’t like it, so we’re fighting back! Reason Media paid us a visit this year, and they recently released this 15-minute documentary on the long, hard battle for Right to Repair.
Repair keeps America running. There are currently over 3 million repair and reuse professionals in the US—they fix cell phones, repair refrigerators, refurbish servers, return tractors to working order, and so much more. Their combined efforts have diverted millions of products from landfills and added countless dollars to the American economy. And they need our support.
If we’ve got any shot at legalizing Right to Repair laws next year, we’ll need your help. So if you believe that you should have the right to repair your stuff, reach out your state lawmakers and tell them so. Repair.org, a pro-repair advocacy group, makes it really easy to write or call your legislators here.

How much should I expect to pay for car insurance?
Im not 100% what year but I am planning on getting an 09-10 Mazda speed3. Maybe a new one but its a long shot. I am currently 19 and in the police academy. So I don't know if being a cop will affect my coverage. I am actually waiting until I graduate before I buy the car. I just want to determine what I would pay to see if I can afford it. When I actually get the car it would be my 3rd year with a license. I have never had a car in my name before either. This will be my first one. I am also planning on financing the car. What should I expect for monthly payments?

When should I sell my car to move to California?
I am moving from Kansas to Los Angeles,California this coming August/September for school and my car requires a lot of money so I want to get rid of it before I go.. $200 month on the payment $80 for insurance $120 month on gas and not including any maintenance that has to be done so with all that being said it seems like a good idea to sell it and save my money after moving to just purchase a cheaper car outright if need be. Does this seem like a good idea and if so when should i start listing my car for sale? It's a 2006 Saturn Ion and by the time I am ready to sell I'll owe about $4,500-5,000. What do you think future historians will have to say about our time and its consequences? Based on your understanding of the subject; also what you think is our most likely response, how do you think AGW will progress over the next few centuries? ""What are the cheapest Insurance companies for young drivers typically aged 17, 18 and 19?""
I have just passed my driving test well its been almost 8 months now and everywhere I look car insurance is too expensive, have done a lot of research and really need a car as keep getting rejected for jobs on the basis of I don't own a car/ have my own transportation as companies do not want to pay for transport in these economical times, been looking at vauxhall corsa 1.2 litre or less, Ford Fiesta 1.2 litre petrol, peagout 207 renaault clio as well. If anyone can provide me with useful tips to reduce or get the 'cheapest' insurance can be third party only for young drivers I would apprecaite it. Also any tricks or hints which can be used for extra haggling as well when confirming quotes on the phone would help. My current budget is betwen 500 - 3000 for a car and would ideally want insurance at under 2000. The cheapest quote I got was for a citroen c1 at 1950 third party only but found the car was in excess of 3000 on autotrader, Are there any cars which are low insurance group i.e. groups 1 and 2, cheap to insure, cheap road tax and cheap running costs. I have mates who have got insurance quotes at 900 and do not understand how they have got it that low. Sure enough post code has an affect but they drive vauxhall corsa in fully comprehensive at them prices.""

My boyfriend and I have our car and house insured under State Farm, but apparently they have a zero tolerance policy and have dropped him from the insurance. My agent was saying something about 're-evaluating' at some point in the future, but he was being so rude to me about it (I wasn't the offender) that I didn't really listen, and have no interest in staying with State Farm (at least with that agent). I assume if State Farm has a 'zero-tolerance policy,' they're not the only company that does, so what companies would insure us? We understand that we'll have to pay higher premiums, which is fine, since it's the consequence of his actions. I'd just rather not go with some cheesy insurance like The General or Safe Auto.""
Home insurance wants to raise dwelling coverege?
I purchased a townhome in March of 2013 for $183k in Florida. It is in a 200-unit subdivision that just completed all construction and sold out all last remaining units a few months ago. When I signed up for home insurance, the insurance company set my dwelling coverage to $183k. I told them that it isn't accurate for them to base dwelling coverage on market price because the replacement cost must be lower since market price includes land and profits the builder makes. Long story short, they convinced me to stay at $183 because they said costs were rising and so forth. I decided not to fight it. Fast forward to this year, and now they are proposing to increase the dwelling coverage to $203k (11% increase). Funny thing is that for my exact townhome model, about 20 units were sold in the last year with prices averaging in the upper $180s (slightly above what I paid). I called the insurance company to let them have a piece of my mind, and they told me they use an independent 3rd party company to price the replacement costs. I told them it's BS because it's way above average market price and replacement costs is always below market price. They asked me to send them documents from when I purchased the home that details the construction materials used and upgrades so that they can reevaluate the dwelling coverage. My question is, why is the burden of proof on me to prove to the insurance company that dwelling coverage should be lowered? Why can't they just reduce it to what I tell them to reduce it to? After all, I am the customer who pays for the insurance. If my house is ever destroyed and I underinsured, that's my problem not theirs. I just find it strange that I'm paying for an insurance service and the insurance company decides what the replacement cost is, not me. Even though it doesn't affect them.""

Question about different garaging address on insurance policy?
I had had my license for 6 years in October, and called my insurance company to make sure my rate would go down. While on the phone, the rep and I got to chatting and I mentioned to her that I have been staying most nights (6-7 nights per week) at a different address for over a year now, but my license and policy are still listed at my mother's address. The rep explained the garaging address can be changed without changing the billing address if the two are different. Today I received an email about being refunded the difference at the end of my policy term. I didn't realize the changes would generate such a huge difference in price (The zip code of the town I have been staying in has a low crime rate and my mother's address is in a city). I realize people change their address to commit fraud, and now seeing such a difference in rate, I want to sure there is no legal ambiguity- I want to be crystal clear on what garaging implies and what I need to be aware of. 1) Am I in a gray area...If I go home for a weekend? If I lend the car to my brother for a few days? Do I need to be at the garaged address 80% of the time? 100%? I almost want to call them and ask to change it back just so as not have to worry. 2) Also, what would generate the bigger rate difference- the garaging change or the fact that I have had my license for 6 years? (is there a way to tell? Can I request a revised policy? 3) I am planning to replace my car soon, possibly donating it by the end of the year (very old car with continuous engine problems), so I will need to cancel my policy before it is up in April. Will this complicate things further? Any advice or resources are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and thank you for reading!""

The rain water caused the sheetrock ceiling to crack and start to collapse . We were told by our insurance provider that this was caused by a manufacturer defect . The manufacturer checked the damage and disagrees . I also disagree being that we have lived in the home for four years and this the first appearance of water . what should I do next ? I have already submitted statements from the manufacturer . The insurance company has also declined to renew our policy because of the damage .

""Will my insurance rates go up if I got a ticket for driving in the HOV lane on I-95 in Broward County, FL?""
I was just pulled over for driving in the HOV lane on I-95 and got a ticket for $165 (kinda steep in my opinion, but the cop said he wasn't giving me a ticket for speeding). The cop said that I won't get points on my record and I verified that with the Florida Department of Motor Vehicle's web-site. I know I'm guilty so I'll just pay the ticket. Will my insurance rates go up if I do that? Should I plead no contest and go to traffic school? I'd still have to pay for my traffic ticket if I did that, but if going that route would stop my insurance rates from going up then it will financially worth it in the long run.""

I am seriously considering becoming an insurance agent for State Farm, Farmers or All State, but I don't know which company is the best choice for me, I am bilingual in Spanish, so I am looking for a company that is going after the Hispanic Market.
