Not as many boxes checked but rest assured, I love him dearly!

I am utterly deranged about him. His arc is quite possibly my favorite arc I've ever seen in any story EVER, no exaggeration.

The way he's a friend to and immediately adopts every kid he meets, how he cares SO MUCH despite his edgelord appearance, his quiet and initially begrudging friendship with Ysayle, how concerned he always is for wol when they have an Echo vision- the way he parallels them, and can understand their suffering in a way almost no one else can! Alphinaud always thinks Estinien would make fun of him for being sentimental but Estinien himself is pretty damn sentimental 😂

I love how he never addressed Ysayle by her name, odd as that sounds; the way he initially called her Iceheart in a derogatory way, but in time, when he calls her Lady Iceheart, his tone shifts to one of respect; his dialogue at the end of the Aitiascope in Endwalker, "Such was the strength of her faith in us."

In Heavensward when he calls you Warrior of Light, at first it's in a wary way, he doesn't believe the hype around you- he has to see your strength with his own eyes. His respect for you is earned, not freely given, which is a breath of fresh air when you're being swallowed up by your own legend. By the end of Dragonsong, when he calls you by your title, "I would ask one last favor of you, Warrior of Light"....the weight behind it. He trusts you. Calls you a friend. You're his equal, his comrade, partner in dragonslaying and truth-uncovering. You fight for him when everyone other than Alphinaud gave up on him, and your love for and faith in him saves his life. So in Endwalker, he fights for you just as hard and paves the way for you to do what you do best.

There's a line someone says to him in Endwalker that I'm thinking about all the time:

"The fires of hatred that once burned in thy heart burneth no more. From their ashes doth spring the light of love, warm and pure."

He found purpose and meaning and a life outside of violence and vengeance, he is so surprisingly.....gentle, by Endwalker. And he's also the funniest person in the expac, no competition 😂 but in all seriousness, I HAVE MANY FEELINGS.

I'm just gonna end this post with what is quite possibly my favorite Estinien dialogue in the game, lol.

"You see the world the way you want it to be; I see the world the way it is. You are idealistic to a fault. Dr Iceheart was observing him today, she remarked the comment he made about the visits. So, she daringly stood up, bringing her clipboard in and swiping the door open, despite protests from her supervisor.

“I heard you wanted company?” She asks with a soft smile, her clipboard held down to her lap. She was a small woman, standing at 5’4, with long, wavy black hair, icy blue eyes and a pear shaped body. She was wearing her typical lab coat and black-framed glasses.

She was a junior researcher, much too innocent and friendly with the SCPs for her own good.

So a big reason I’ve yet mention about why i love Final Fantasy XIV so much is how many powerful female characters there are. Like legit, a majority of the most powerful figures are women. And they’re beautiful women at that!

I’mma go on a small rant because omg i really wanna talk about this but TL/DR: As a woman, it is very refreshing not seeing the “ ‘ugly’ woman is the smartest and most powerful but a very loose side character/plot point while prettiest is dumb Save-Me! damsel in distress ” trope in a video game for the first time in a very long while HEAVY Spoilers for Realm Reborn - Stormblood ( Because i havn’t fully started Shadowbringers yet )

so ok lets just dive right in. FFXIV has AMAZING female characters. Its not often you see gorgeous and strong characters but hot damn does ffxiv have them. And powerful in more than just the “Fight me m8″ sense. We’ll start with Nanamo

Nanamo is the Sultana of Ul’dah, but was thrown into the crown at a strikingly young age due to the death of her parents. She feels very deeply for her kingdom and the citizens and fights hard for them, rich or poor, only to be limited and puppetted by the syndicate. After a very fun time being stuck in a near death coma caused by people of said syndicate, she matures very quickly, this only 21 year old taking charge on her own feet and fighting even harder for the good of everyone, even going so far as to allow her prominent right hand man Raubahn to stay within the rings of the now independent Ala Mhigo. Next the Elder Seedseer, Kan-E-Senna

While she does not play huge roles in  the story, she is still a very imposing force.A compassionate leader of Gridania, but very firm with her choices and views with magic powerful enough to, with the help of her siblings, apparently bring back a person lost in the Aether between the living and spirit worlds like, what the fuck lady Finally of the three we have Admiral Merlwyb Bloefhiswyn

Oh my good god. Nanamo and Kan-E-Senna were powerful and pretty but here we are with Powerful, Buff woman but she clearly does not lose her feminism.  Limsa Lominsa’s leader, she is steadfast and steel willed. I mean there really isn’t much to say about this lady she’s just the perfect strong female character Stepping into your fellow scions, we have some amazing allies, starting with Lyse, a monk who plays a prominent role in leading a huge resistance in fighting for Ala Mhigo’s freedom against the Imperial invasion.

Y’shtola who doesn’t even NEED an introduction as being one of the most bad ass, silver tongued but extremely wise healers I’ve ever had the pleasure to see.

Next up is Alisaie, a fucking red mage of all things. She’s gone throughout the first two parts of the game as you venture with her (much more scholarly) twin brother Alphinaud, but once you hit post heavensword, she steps in, she steps in HARD, and she does not hesitate to make her presence known to her enemies.

And I even wanna give a shoutout to our little accountant and, honestly, the glue that keeps us together, everyone’s favorite little sassy, clothing making, bottle juggling lalafel, Tataru! Without her encouragement, I really doubt the Scions would have the strength to keep fighting together like they do.

Going into some other ones, first there’s Moenbryda

Much like Merlwyb, she is a very strong lady. But her braun isn’t the only thing about her! She is extremely intelligent, and was the first to finally figure out how to effectively defeat the asciens for good!

There’s also Lady Iceheart, Ysayle

Leader of a rebellion and summoner of Saint Shiva all in the name of trying to put an end to the thousand year long Dragonsong War. As misguided as she was, it was her along with the WOL that helped get Hraesvelgr to act and get the wheels turning for the epic finale of Heavensward. And even stepping into the area of the antagonists, Yotsuyu!

An extraordinarily complex character with an extraordinarily complex story line, she starts as a HEAVY antagonist, takes a 180, takes another 180, and then takes ANOTHER 180 as we slowly piece her story together. It was so pleasing seeing such a complicated female character in a video game like this and Tsuyu will stay in my memory for a very, very long time. 

This post only covers some of the more prominent ones that i really wanted to mention, otherwise I’d totally go into talking about Matoya, Minfilia, Vidofnir, Tiamat, Hilda, and so many more. Basiclly, thank you Square Enix for my life and I can’t wait to meet what other strong yet beautiful women are to come in Shadowbringers once i finally sit down to really start it.

Gisele’s story mostly follows the MSQ but the major divergences aside from her origin story happen around Heavensward. Haurchefant and Ysayle both survive the events and, along with Estinien, join the Scions of the Seventh Dawn post-Dragonsong War.

Gisele saved Haurchefant with some Astrologian trickery and a literal card up her sleeve (tl;dr but she basically slapped the Bole on him and bolstered his shield just enough so that it was able to take the fatal sting out of the blow.) He does have a permanent, glowing scar on his chest from it. Artoirel’s first act as ruling Count of House Fortemps is to finally grant Haurchefant the use of the family name, as a peace offering for how he treated him when they were growing up. Haurche still keeps Greystone in addition though, so after the war, he becomes Lord Haurchefant Greystone de Fortemps.

As for Ysayle, Gisele got a very timely assist from Minfilia (who didn’t want her beloved to lose anyone else she cared for) and basically Ultimate Dreadwyrm Tranced herself some dragon wings to save Shiva from the Garlean dreadnought over Azys Lla. But it’s worth nothing that similar to Haurche, Ysayle was still badly hurt and it was quite touch and go; Y’shtola and Gisele were able to stabilize her but Cid had Biggs and Wedge take her back to Ishgard for help. Aymeric himself insisted on bringing her to the Congregation’s infirmary and placing her under the direct care of Captain Whitecape, where she stayed for the rest of the story until 3.5 (see below). It’s worth noting that this is the last time she ever assumed the form of Shiva. It’s not that she can’t, but that she refuses to do so. That it would be anathema to her new role as a Scion is actually fairly irrelevant tbh. “Lady Iceheart”, who clung to delusion and sophistry in the name of the “Greater Good” is not the woman she is anymore. Ysayle very much intended to die there over Azys Lla, making herself a noble sacrifice, but Gisele refused to allow it any more than she allowed Haurche to do the same.

Anyway, Ysayle and Haurchefant do still help Gisele and Alphinaud pry the Eyes from Possessed!Estinien’s armor, but they weren’t spirits, they literally broke out of the infirmary and came to help (and were scolded thoroughly afterwards). Estinien had a long talk with Gisele before he peaced out, and she made him the offer to join the Scions then, but he said he needed time to find himself. Hraesvelgr gave him a good kick in the proverbial pants. Gisele gave him a new purpose. So he did, eventually. He and Ysayle basically cover Dravania the way that Thancred did with Thanalan, Y’shtola with La Noscea, etc.

All three play significant roles in Stormblood’s events, with Haurchefant following Gisele, Lyse, and the Leveilleur twins to the Far East while Ysayle (still in recovery) remained in Gyr Abania with the Alliance forces because she still wasn’t quite 100%, but is good enough to help Gisele fight Lakshmi. Estinien was off hunting Shinryu just like in the game canon, but with the added incentive as a Scion.

Estinien is also captured following his infiltration of Castrum Abania and made Resonant; this factors into the final fight because he actually fights alongside Gisele and Ysayle vs. Shinryu.

In light of 4.5: Haurchefant is the actual last to drop, alongside Alisaie, right after he tanks Grimdark for Gisele et al. Ysayle dropped the same time Urianger did, while she was in Anyx Trine investigating the aether situation and conferring with Vidofnir. Estinien is…complicated. Originally I had him dropping then, with her, but then 4.5 pt 2 came out and I’m still on the fence. I could have him rescue Gisele like canon and then drop, or have him drop like I originally did, and Ele!Zenos be the one to rescue Gisele. Still not sure tbh.

Oh, and Fordola straight up dies. Fuck her lol
