Yeehaw!
When the Cactus Blooms
17. Roadrunner
By the next morning the fire had passed. Smoke could still be seen, but it was to the northeast of the ranch. Chekov shifted in his chair at breakfast. Something was different at the table and he didn’t know what it was. He looked over and caught Sulu’s eye. Finally his friend looked back and Chekov gave him a questioning look.
It clicked a moment later as he followed Sulu’s eyes looking pointedly at Mr. Scott and then the doctor. They had been the ones to report the fire the previous evening. Chekov wondered briefly where they had been before they had come back to the house, then he decided he didn’t want to know. And besides, from the light dancing in the doctor’s eyes as he looked over at Mr. Scott, Chekov really didn’t want to know.
“We’ll need to ride out in a while,” Jim said from the head of the table. “Make sure there aren’t any small fires still burning.”
“And if there’s someone out there?” Dr. McCoy asked.
“Well, we need to find that out anyway,” Jim said.
The doctor frowned. “Seems like a job for Pike and his men.”
“It’ll be fine Bones,” Jim waved him off.
“The canyon is long with many twists and turns; it would make a decent hideout for those who don’t want to be found,” Mr. Spock said.
Next to him Chekov sensed Jaylah grow tense. Before he could say something comforting to her the doctor spoke again.
“It’s alright sweetheart,” Dr. McCoy said gently. “We’ll find who did it.”
“Thank you Doctor,” Jaylah said and threw a grim smile at him.
Chekov gripped his fork tightly as he took his next bite, trying to control his expression and not glare at the doctor.
“The tracks I found are probably gone now,” Sulu said thoughtfully.
“Maybe it will be easier to find now,” Miss Uhura said. “The fire will have burned away shrubs and trees. Less places to hide.”
“I will go with you,” Chekov said quickly, looking up the table at Jim.
Jim looked back at him with a concerned face.
“Ok,” he finally agreed. “Anyone else?”
Sulu and Mr. Spock both volunteered.
Jim looked at the doctor and Mr. Scott with an amused smile. “You two don’t mind getting the rest of the work done?”
“Nae lad, it’s fine,” Mr. Scott said and smiled down the table at Dr. McCoy.
Chekov caught a knowing smile on Miss Christine’s face.
“I can help,” Jaylah spoke up.
“I’m not sure if—”
“Please?” Jaylah asked, turning to look at the doctor’s protest. “I can work.”
Dr. McCoy looked at her for a long moment in silence.
“Let her,” Keenser finally said into the silence.
“Alright,” the doctor relented. “But try to stay out of the sun and if you feel tired, you rest.”
Jaylah nodded. “I promise.”
Chekov lifted his hat and wiped at his forehead. They were spread out trying to cover as much ground as possible. Sulu was off to Chekov’s left, distant, but still close enough to hear if one of them called out. Mr. Spock and Jim were to his right.
The fire had burned a wide swath, and the ground below his horse was blackened. All the bushes, the weeds, the few grasses and trees were the same. From a few spots smoke still rose, but each time Chekov got close there was no remaining flame.
It was a good few miles to the canyon, but they didn’t hurry. A strange lump in a tree caught Chekov’s attention, and he urged his horse towards it. From horseback, it was easy for him to look as he got close. He let out a soft noise when he did. It was the remains of a nest. Chekov looked around himself as if the parent birds would fly at him for peeking, but no birds sang anywhere nearby.
Four cracked and blackened eggs sat in the blackened nest. Chekov muttered a curse under his breath. A tragedy and a waste was a fire across the land like this.
Before too much longer they reached the canyon and Jim called them all together again.
“There are tracks here,” said Mr. Spock.
Jim’s hand patted the gun hanging at his hip, but he shook his head.
“No telling how many. We’ll have to tell Pike and come back. Four of us could be outnumbered.”
Chekov secretly agreed in his heart. He had no desire to fight anyone, but he would if pressed. And if it was the gang who had attacked Jaylah’s family, he would gladly take them on. They had to know if her family was safe.
They stuck closer together for the ride back, closer to where Chekov had ridden. He noticed a fluttering around the tree with the burnt nest. It took form as he got closer. A roadrunner.
“Oh,” he exclaimed to himself. “Poor thing.”
“That a roadrunner?” Sulu asked next to him, squinting forward.
“It’s nest burned,” Chekov said sadly. “Four eggs.”
The bird was scrambling around the base of the tree and crying out. If it noticed the four men and horses approaching it didn’t care.
“Wonder where it’s mate is,” Sulu said.
“It’s like Jaylah,” Chekov suddenly said. “It’s missing its family.”
Sulu looked at him and slowly nodded.
“Is it hurt?”
Chekov shrugged and stopped his horse. He hopped down and handed the reins to Sulu. Carefully he approached the tree and the roadrunner.
“Hey,” he said gently. “I’m sorry your family is gone.” He moved slowly closer. The bird cocked its head at him. Chekov held his palms out to the bird. He crouched as he stopped a couple feet from the tree.
“What’cha- oh,” Jim said as he and Mr. Spock caught up.
To Chekov’s surprise the roadrunner moved towards him and turned its head, examining his hands.
“We’ve lost family too,” he continued in his soft voice. “I’m sorry for what happened to yours.”
The bird regarded him for another moment, then jumped onto his arm.
“Oh!”
“You’ve got a friend,” Sulu laughed.
Carefully Chekov brought his other hand over and touched the roadrunner. It ducked its head at his face, gave a shake, then jumped off and ran away as quick as it could. Two feathers were left behind drifting to the ground in front of Chekov. He picked them up carefully and stood. The bird was already a dot in the distance.
“That was something,” Jim said.
Chekov made an acknowledging noise as he tucked the two feathers into his pocket and smiled. He already knew what he wanted to do with the feathers.

@charlesemersonwinchesteriii replied to this post:
I never really understood why people kept calling that scene a big hawkbeej moment, so I'm relieved I'm not alone in that haha. Also you make an excellent argument that Hawkeye doesn't actually "get worse" as the show progresses, which I'd never thought about before! I know people talk about his coping mechanisms becoming less effective in later seasons and I always just passively agreed with that cause I'm not super focused on him and also I've never watched any of the episodes in order (woops!) but now you're making me really think about it..... hmmm..... I can totally see this as another instance of fandom seeing a character arc where there isn't actually one, just like with Charles. Just for myself, the only concrete change I could point to noticing is the obvious and intentional "learns to Respect Women" thing. But I don't know if that's just me not being smart enough to see things lol
lol yeah to me it’s like, yep BJ’s def acting like a guy who’s known Hawkeye for a couple weeks and is totally out of his depth, which is fine and understandable but not really shippy to me. But also tbf I’d prefer that even if I was a huge hawkbeej shipper because I’m not much of an ‘instant magical connections and understanding’ person when it comes to romance tropes anyway.
But I mainly c/ped your comment so I could respond at greater length to the rest of it, so! I definitely don’t think you’re missing anything (and ik we’ve talked about it before but yeah I also very much agre with you about Charles).
tbf I think Alan Alda is the one who said that Hawkeye’s coping mechanisms get less effective, but it’s not the first time I’ve disagreed with his takes on the show lol. And I don’t have a fully solidified take on Hawkeye’s “character arc” tbf. But yeah my impression is that it’s not that Hawkeye changes, it’s that the tone of the show changes. Hawkeye does get more dramatic episodes and he does get more sad monologues as the show goes on, but he never stops balancing them out with humour and hope, he had plenty of sad monologues in the early seasons too, and he never falls apart to the extent that he did in Dr Pierce Mr Hyde or The Late Captain Pierce. Some of the later episodes reference the war getting to him and making him act out in petty ways, eg Dear Uncle Abdul, but like, so did Bananas Crackers and Nuts, the 7th episode of the show. Plus arguably his worst experience throughout the show, give or take GFA, was season 1′s Sometimes You Hear the Bullet, with Abyssinia Henry not far behind either.
He’s always been portrayed as someone who feels deeply and is greatly affected by the war and who’s barely coping - the funnier tone of the early seasons made it slightly less obvious, but it’s still pretty apparent. The dramatic tone of the later seasons gives the writers more leeway to show how affected he is, but again like, he’s never worse than he was in some of the earlier eps until the finale. And I tend to think that the prevailing idea that Hawkeye gets steadily worse emotional stability and mental health-wise throughout the show sells the early seasons short. If I mentally sort of compensate for the tone shift in my head, I don’t see Hawkeye changing - I just see the stress being framed with more black humour in the first half of the show and with more earnest drama in the second half.
I mean logically it makes sense that the more time you spend in a war zone the worse you’ll feel lol, and with the tone shift it’s easy to see why it’s such a common take. But yeah, I just don’t see it myself, at least beyond a potentially deliberate sense of exhaustion in season 11 when they knew they were wrapping up.
And actually I also think the respecting women angle is like, not really the case, imo? I think it’s something the writers were sort of trying for so it’s definitely telegraphed as a thing in several episodes, and it’s kind of become common knowledge that Hawkeye gets more respectful towards women so I def don’t think you’re wrong to pick up on it. I just think the writers failed to sell it at all lol. Like he presumably learned a lesson in Inga eg, but it’s forgotten afterwards as the show goes right back to using his now pathetic attempts at womanizing as a source of humour. He’s definitely less crass to Margaret when they become friends but he never completely stops objectifying her. He has a sad monologue about not wanting to date a 20 year old because he’s too jaded in Show Biz, but he turned down even just casual sex with a 20 year old in season 3 because she was too young for him, so that’s not actually a change, as much as the writers tried to make it seem like one.
And Who Knew (nonsensically) recontextualizes his womanizing as a fear of committment and emotional vulnerability (in the satirical seasons it was a distraction from the war) and suggests Hawkeye getting over that, but Who Knew is ooc, and again he goes right back to pathetic womanizing in other season 11 episodes, like Blood and Guts. He even hits on an orderly in the psych hospital in GFA lol, and the Hawk/Margaret kiss is a (frankly cute imo) throwback to early sexual harassment-y episodes like There’s Nothing Like a Nurse where he kissed her goodbye, or Abyssinia Henry where he told Henry to kiss her goodbye lol. So like, if the writers were aiming to show Hawkeye changing his attitude towards women, I don’t think they did a very good job, basically.
But yk I do think it’s fair to take the later seasons in the probable spirit intended and view Hawkeye getting less misogynist as an arc. I just don’t personally. But also I don’t think Hawkeye was ever misogynist in the way Inga implied, and I think the later show often misrepresented the womanizing a little to condemn it (eg Show Biz and Who Knew again) so yk. I just prefer a happy medium there lol
#mash#marley on mash#hawkeye mash#responding in a new post because the connection to the original post is pretty tenuous and it's long enough that i want it to be#its own thing

Not Meant to Be
Not Meant to Be
Series/Pairing: Open Heart - Ethan Ramsey x f!MC (Samantha Carlson)
Disclaimer: Most characters belong to PB, Samantha is sort of mine
Other Characters: Harper Emery
Rating / Warnings: T / Angst
Summary: After Samantha survived her ethics hearing near the end of her intern year Ethan assured her that they would make it work. He went to the Amazon promising her they would still be together when he came back. So, who changed his mind?
Comments/Notes: Written for the Please Be Prompt event at CFWC using the angst prompt "Was it ever me?" It will be in bold. Also, I wasn’t quite sure who to tag. Obviously, my perma list and All Open Heart. I don’t have and Ethan and Samantha list. But if it includes Ethan, I figured my Ethan list should be included. And it is part of Samantha’s back story, my Tobias list is also included, as that is there story. I also need to thank a couple of people for assistance. @liaromancewriter and @jerzwriter for research and opinions.

Eighteen Months Ago
Harper smiled as she stepped out of the elevator and headed toward Ethan’s apartment, carrying a bottle of Pinot noir. Granted, it wasn’t Scotch, but it was his favorite wine.
She let herself into his apartment and headed to the kitchen where Ethan was preparing dinner. “Salmon. My favorite.”
Ethan leaned over and kissed her. “Wine?”
She smiled. “I thought we could celebrate.”
“What are we celebrating?”
Harper waited until he had slid the baking dish into the oven and turned to face her. “My new job.”
Ethan frowned at her. “What new job? You’re already Head of Neurosurgery. Is Carmichael leaving?”
Harper smiled and shook her head. “Not Chief of Surgery. I’m replacing Dr. Robinette when he retires.”
“Chief of Medicine? Administration? You can’t be serious, Harper!”
She glared at him. “Of course I’m serious. This is a good thing for me and for Edenbrook.”
“You’ll be playing politics and your focus won’t be on the patients.”
“Ethan! I’m not going to forget I’m a doctor first. This isn’t going to change me at all.” She rubbed her hand along his arm. There is no reason for anything to change.”
“Except us.” Ethan twisted his arm away from her.
“What do you mean?”
“I’ll be your employee. We can’t have anything other than a professional relationship.” When she opened her mouth to speak he held up his hand and continued. “It would be unethical for you to be with a member of your staff. And I’m not transferring to Mass Kenmore or Cambridge.”
“Then I guess I’ll see you at work, Dr. Ramsey.” Harper turned on her heel and headed to the door before he could see the tears glittering in her eyes.
The Day After the Ethics Hearing
"But the competition was canceled.” Ethan was horrified at the implication of Naveen’s announcement.
“Then it's a good thing I'm the top dog around here. I've just made new rules! It's settled. Dr. Carlson will spend her second year as the junior fellow on the diagnostics team... with you as her direct supervisor.” He turned from Ethan to face Samantha. “Congratulations, Samantha. You've earned it.” Naveen gave her a wink before walking away.
“So, um... how do we deal with this?” Samantha chewed on her lip as she watched him.
“We make it work. What matters is the patients. Right?”
“Right.”
"Well, then... Get to work, Rookie.”
“Yes, doctor.”
Several hours later Sami was heading to the cafeteria to meet her roommates when she received a page directing her to Ethan’s office.
When she got there the door was partially open and she stepped in. He had tossed his doctor’s coat over his chair and had his sleeves rolled up. He had several boxes around with books, medical journals, and office supplies loaded haphazardly.
“Ethan? What are you doing?”
He nodded to the small couch in his office and sat next to her. “During the time that I resigned, I talked to a colleague at WHO. He asked me if I would be interested in heading to the Amazon for a month or two. As I wasn’t planning on returning here, I agreed. Naveen knows I agreed to that and he’s happily giving me the time. I’m moving my personal effects to the diagnostic office since I’ll be there when I get back.”
“You’re leaving tomorrow?”
Ethan nodded. “Naveen is sending out an email blast to the hospital tomorrow but I wanted you to hear it from me.”
“And, us, Ethan?”
“I meant what I said. We’ll make this work when I get back.” Samantha smiled as he leaned down to kiss her.
Two Months Later
Ethan hurried through the airport and smiled when he saw the display of souvenirs at one of the shops. He thought of the stuffed pink dolphin resting in his suitcase. Samantha had told him about her and Sienna being dolphins in a sea of sharks. It was only appropriate that he bring her back a pink river dolphin from the Amazon. Before long, he was settled into his seat for the first leg of his twenty hour trip back to Boston. He reclined his seat back and closed his eyes.
Many hours later, Ethan opened the door to his apartment and rolled his suitcase to the laundry room. He unzipped it and found Samantha’s dolphin before heading into his bedroom. He changed into a clean pair of jeans and a white henley and headed towards the front door.
*********************
Earlier in the day Harper had stopped in Naveen’s office. The two of them made a point to have lunch once a week since he had taken over as chief. Ethan had sent Naveen an email stating his flight number and that he would return to work the following day. She smiled at the brevity of the message. It was the only time anyone had heard from Ethan the entire two months he had been gone and he sent his mentor and boss a grand total of two sentences.
Later, Harper stood in front of Ethan’s apartment door, feeling slightly nervous. She remembered the last time she was here, happy because she’d just found out she was being promoted to Chief of Medicine. Now that she wasn’t his boss, maybe they could have another chance. She raised her hand to knock when the door opened and she faced Ethan as he was picking up a green jacket.
“Harper. Come in.” He stepped aside to let her pass.
“You’re going out? I figured you’d want to rest before tomorrow. The new interns show up and you officially start as Director of Diagnostics.”
Ethan smiled. “As Director of Diagnostics, interns aren’t my problem this year. I was heading to Donahue’s. But please, sit.” He motioned the leather sofa.
Harper sat and smiled as he continued, “I’d offer you coffee, but I’m out and unless you’ve changed, I know you don’t like Scotch.”
“I’m fine. I was hoping we could talk.”
“About?”
Ethan was surprised when she replied, “Us.”
“Us? Harper, there hasn’t been an ‘us’ since you accepted the Chief of Medicine job.”
“And I don’t have that job anymore. I’m no longer your boss.” She turned sideways on the sofa to face him. “We had so many starts and stops in our relationship and we were finally really beginning to feel permanent until I accepted that job. I haven’t felt that with anyone I went out with since. Have you?”
Ethan turned his head from her. No one except Samantha. He closed his eyes as he remembered the last conversation with Harper in his apartment. It would be unethical for you to be with a member of your staff. And here he was, planning on beginning a relationship with someone on his own staff! He faced her again. “If things hadn’t happened the way they did, we might still be together and be happy. But I think we need to stay in the past now.”
Harper headed for the door, and paused with her hand on the knob. “Maybe I’m a glutton for punishment, but I have to know, Was it ever me?” When he didn’t answer right away. She opened the door and left.
Ethan pulled on his jacket and headed out his apartment. He was still going to Donahue’s, but instead of bringing Samantha home with him, he was planning on telling her that they needed to take a step back.
He spotted the dolphin waiting to be taken to Samantha. He decided he would donate it to the children’s wing in the morning.

We were watching a Tom Segura special before bed last night and he always has a bit about his weird interactions with his doctor, which lead to me waking up in the middle of the night thinking about Dr. Mal Praktis. What does he do when he's not sewing people back together? Has he always been this cantankerous or is it just since working for Dethklok (understandable)? What's really under that rug on his head? I need more Mal Lore!
Also thinking about him being the pediatrician in the Just a Bunch of Guys universe and he's just So Over kids
ah what a great thing to wake up to haha The Mal Lore……
i just wanna say though re: him being their pediatrician in some guys AU: funniest shit ever. while i think the kids get on his nerves, i think he absolutely still hates the parents most of all. with the kids it’s like. what’re they gonna do. they’re kids. but the parents? oh my god. worst people he’s ever met. ANYWAY REAL MAL LORE i’ll put a cut since it’s been awhile since i’ve just talked about this guy.
mal definitely gives me the impression of someone who’s always been, well, like that. i think he’s always seen the work he does as somewhat beneath him, that he’s the smartest person in the room, etc. even pre-dethklok when he was just a regular doctor/surgeon. that’s why i think pre-dethklok he was running a pill mill (and ultimately got his license revoked); he was bored. in a weird way i think he can appreciate being the company necromancer, though eventually he does find cleaning up charles’ messes to be rather dull as well. and dethklok themselves? well, they certainly don’t help his temperament.
that said though as far as like, what he does in his downtime, i made a joke on one of his posts talking about him being an avid TV watcher, and i still stand by it. he likes dramas with intricate plotlines so he can theorize about it (i think the exact joke i made was like. you should hear his theories about what’s happening on LOST). i think i still have some lore stuff in my notes somewhere so i’ll just paste some of that here :^] ->
“Originally from the Massachusetts/general New England area, grew up nearby to Charles but the two never met until college. The two actually have a pretty pleasant history, and were often grouped together as being naturally gifted in their respective fields (Charles being at the top of his law class, Mal being the top med student). Where their similarities ended, though, was that while Charles had always been a workaholic, Mal was known to get bored easily, as well as notably getting into medicine for the money rather than some burning passion for saving lives. The two kept in contact, though they rarely ever went out of their way to hang out as both were busy with their careers.”
“Mal graduated top of his class, got his MD and began practicing medicine, being heralded as someone born to be a doctor. Not only that, but he was also a gifted surgeon as well. All around the best doctor, which inevitably led to him getting pretty bored with things after several years. After being a working doctor for a good 15 or so years, Mal ended up running a pill mill for extra money. He wasn’t beneath running some shady operations, and when his scheme was finally found out (it took a couple of years; he ran it really well), his license was revoked though he managed to miss a conviction. Mainly because his lawyer…was Charles.”
“Charles, after hearing about what was going on, knew that he needed doctor for Dethklok’s medical team, as by this point the band was getting ridiculously bigger and the boys themselves were getting into more trouble. Charles needed a doctor who was 1) exceptional at his work and 2) willing to do some shady medical practices. Mal was the perfect fit. So he worked his case in exchange for Mal’s expertise on the Dethklok medical staff (don’t worry, they were able to get his license back too, though that’s not necessarily public knowledge as this was a fairly notable case in the area). Mal agreed to work for Charles, and in exchange got an even bigger paycheck than what he got practicing medicine normally. So while he cannot stand Dethklok, he continues to work because he’s now the highest paid doctor in the world.”
onto just. general lore stuff. he was probably born some time in the early 60s, making him somewhere in his mid-to-late 40s in 2008 (my baseline time period for the show; s2 era)
i don’t think he’s ever been married, mainly because he doesn’t think anyone is good enough for him. i also think he’s someone who doesn’t exactly practice what he preaches when it comes to good health; he smokes and takes pills, though he’s never impaired. it’s pretty impressive. and i do think that while he does feel a certain amount of bitterness towards charles at times, the two are on very good terms and will occasionally have a drink together in his office.
#asks#i need a tag for him. hmmm…..#dethklok’s doctor (mal praktis tag)#good enough. i’ll edit the tags on old posts later lol#ANYWAY. love that guy. i think he’s hilarious and it’s especially fun to imagine him interacting w people he’s resurrected/other employees#i think i just love the dethklok employee cinematic universe. or the minor mtl character universe. whatever. it’s great#thank you for this! i had a lot of fun talking about him again :^]

[TJLC] Distracted by AGRA (or the many hints about personification of death in The Six Thatchers)
PLEASE CONSIDER THIS A WORK IN PROGRESS. IT’S NOT PERFECT BUT I HAVE SOME GOOD IDEAS HERE, I THINK, SO KEEPING IT FOR NOW.
A FEW DISCLAIMERS: - I’m not a native English speaker and this wasn’t betad, so excuse the less-than-perfect English (although you’re about to find out what native language actually is). - I’m very new in the fandom and in reading/writing meta, this would be my second meta post tbh, so excuse the amateurism. - Everything I’m about to write here is based on very quick and easy Google searches. I’m BY NO MEANS AN ACADEMIC! I’m not well versed enough in any form of literary analysis to claim more than that, but perhaps this post will be a breeding ground for new ideas. If you are an academic and you find these interesting - please go ahead and expand on them. - Lastly, this may have been picked up before by other meta writers and if so - I’m not aware of it, as I’m quite new to this fandom.
tl;dr: The Six Thatchers seems to be full of hints about the personification of death and cultural/religious representations of it, in a way that may even hint that that Mary = death, and/or that Moftiss were very preoccupied with the idea while writing it. It should be noted that I find these tidbits interesting in the context of well-established TJLC theories I’ve been reading up on a lot lately, namely EMP and M-Theory. I found these details interesting in the context of reading TST as something that’s happening in Sherlock’s MP as he’s dying and suspecting that Mary is dangerous and perhaps even linked to Moriarty.
AGRA > Samarra > The Four Angels of Death
As these things always go, I’ve been re-watching episodes while researching my WIP fic ‘Turned’. I have this new habit these days of only listening, instead of actually watching the episode in search of a fresh perspective. This time I was blown away, once again, by Sherlock and Mycroft’s conversation about AGRA. It’s a VERY odd conversation considering the topic, and what caught my ear this time was Mycroft mechanically reciting facts about the city of Agra. Why Agra, I asked? What’s so important about it? Nothing, the way I see it. One search led to another and I looked up Samarra, thinking perhaps I’ll find some connection between the two cities, but couldn’t.
The search for Samarra and the parable about it led me to the Appointment in Samarra wiki page, which mentions that the title of the book comes from a retelling of an ancient Mesopotamian tale by W. Somerset Maugham (the source of the next quote is here):
"The Appointment in Samarra" (as retold by W. Somerset Maugham [1933])
The speaker is Death
There was a merchant in Bagdad who sent his servant to market to buy provisions and in a little while the servant came back, white and trembling, and said, Master, just now when I was in the marketplace I was jostled by a woman in the crowd and when I turned I saw it was Death that jostled me. She looked at me and made a threatening gesture, now, lend me your horse, and I will ride away from this city and avoid my fate. I will go to Samarra and there Death will not find me. The merchant lent him his horse, and the servant mounted it, and he dug his spurs in its flanks and as fast as the horse could gallop he went. Then the merchant went down to the marketplace and he saw me standing in the crowd and he came to me and said, Why did you make a threating getsture to my servant when you saw him this morning? That was not a threatening gesture, I said, it was only a start of surprise. I was astonished to see him in Bagdad, for I had an appointment with him tonight in Samarra.
There is also a very interesting study guide link from this website, which asks some very interesting questions about tale, such as Maugham’s decision to make Death a non-omniscient narrator of this tale, as well as a woman. I’ll return to Death being referred to as a woman later. However, since I have no expertise in literary readings, I’ll leave it to others who might be to add some more here.
More below the cut:
The version of the story in TST is a bit different; the servant is absent from the tale; it is instead the merchant who has the nighttime appointment with Death in Samarra after being startled to see Death that morning in the Baghdad market. (This note was taking from a wikipedia entry about another - apparently- very deterministic play by Maugham, Shepey.)
Anyway, the Appointment in Samarra wikipedia mentions that Maugham’s story comes from a much older version recorded in the Babylonian Talmud, Sukkah 53a.
The Talmud is the central text of Rabbinic Judaism. I’m a Hebrew speaking Jew, though an atheist one who isn’t well-read in religious texts at all, but I was intrigued enough to look up the Hebrew Talmud version of the text (in fact it’s originall in Aramaic, but wikipedia offers a Hebrew tranlsation). A quick Google search led me to the wikipedia page about the personification of death, and that’s when things got interesting.
Under the section about the grim reaper in Judaism, a story from the Talmud is mentioned, which seems to be another version of the Appointment in Samarra story. Here’s the story, translated by Google Translate, because I couldn’t find an English version:
The Babylonian Talmud tells of a sage, Rabbi Bibi, the son of Abiy, whose angel of death was often in his company. Rabbi Bibi heard the angel of death ask his emissary to name a woman named Miriam (Mary) who was a hair dresser (the future mother of Jesus). The messenger of death accidentally killed another woman named Miriam (Mary) who was a teacher. The angel of death said to his messenger: "I asked you to kill Miriam the barber and not Miriam the teacher." The messenger of death replied: Then I will bring Miriam the teacher back to life and bring before you Miriam the barber. The angel of death said to him: If you have already brought Miriam the teacher, leave her with me along with the rest of the dead. The angel of death asked his messenger: How did you manage to kill the teacher Miriam even though it was not her time to die? The messenger of death replied: She was killed before an opportunity to kill her - she was fiddling with the stove with ember in her hand to clean the stove. Inadvertently she caused a burn in her leg - and when a person was harmed and his determination of his time to die was undermined - so I had a chance to kill prematurely. The sage, Rabbi Bibi, asked the angel of death: Do you have permission to kill people before their pre-determined time has come? The angel of death answered, "Yes, for it is written, 'There is no one who has perished without judgment.'
(According to wikipedia, this story is taken from תלמוד בבלי, מסכת חגיגה, דף ד, עמוד ב – דף ה, עמוד א).
AGR(A?M?)
Alright, I said, two Marys, escaping death but then meeting it eventually. It happens.
But as I read on… that Hebrew wikipedia page mentions another personification of death, the angel of death Azarel. Azarel has three ‘colleagues’ (e.g archangel) in Islam (and in some variations, they also exist in Judaism and Christianity): Jibrail (Gabriel), Israfil, commonly thought of as the counterpart of the Judeo-Christian archangel Raphael, and Mīkhā'īl (Michael).
So wait, that’s -- that’s Azarel, Gabriel, Raphael... as in AGR(A)? Whoa. That fourth angel mentioned in Islam is Michael - which doesn’t hold up with AGRA - but could that be a coincidence? We’re told two things about BBCSh’s AGRA, but we can’t really know they’re actually true. The first one is that Mary claims it’s her initials, which we later learn is possibly not true - John gets mad realizing it’s another lie. The other thing is that Mary claims to be ‘R’, for Rosamund, but we can’t be sure about that either. However, another cool detail: in Christianity, Raphael is generally associated with an unnamed angel mentioned in the Gospel of John, who stirs the water at the healing pool of Bethesda. Yes - I know, the M really doesn’t fit there, but M really is a character that stands out in the BBCSH universe, doesn’t it?
Moving on to more cultural references of the personification of death the Hebrew wikipedia page offers, note that I haven’t read the first and it’s been years since I watched the second:
Death with Interruptions
In Death with Interruptions by José Saramago, they mention, death is a woman, and she falls in love with one of her future victims. She decides to spare his life: Every time death sends him his letter [notifying him of his imminent death], it gets returned. Death discovers that, without reason, this man has mistakenly not been killed. Although originally intending merely to analyse this man and discover why he is unique, death eventually becomes infatuated with him, so much so that she takes on human form to meet him. Upon visiting the cellist, she plans to personally give him the letter; instead, she falls in love with him, and, by doing so, she becomes even more human-like.
Chess and The Seventh Seal
Another reference is the film The Seventh Seal, about a knight returning from a crusade, and discovers his land his ravaged by plague. The knight encounters Death, whom he challenges to a chess match, believing he can survive as long as the game continues. Does that remind you of any particular promo pics?
What I find interesting in all these references, is that they all seem to deal with questions regarding ‘dealing with death’ that, in the context of EMP for example, can be seen as Sherlock ‘running simulations’ (or asking philosophical questions) on how to deal with his current situations:
- ‘Do you have permission to kill people before their pre-determined time has come’? (Can people time die before their pre-determined time? Can people escape pre-determined death?)
- Can you interrupt death with love? Was Mary supposed to kill John, fell in love with him and thus his death was postponed? Is John still in danger?
- What can one do to postpone death - perhaps challenging it to a game, hoping for survival as you distract it?

Lecture 1: Sin-Eaters
Hi everyone! Just a little out-of-character note here from your mods. We promised that your characters would have IC documents helping them to get accustomed to the ins and outs of being a Sin-Eater so you don’t have to ask for massive information dumps every thread and we don’t have to spend every prologue thread just on the basics. So...we thought we’d show it off early, to give you an idea of what the GMPCs and the rest of the game world are like!
(l2r: Hisoka, Keiichi, Damien, Ori, Hisaya)
Look, there they are! They’re...well, about as happy as they can be given the circumstances. And they’re making some tape recordings which your OCs will get to listen to IC. Let’s start with our very first one, beginning below the cut.
Keiichi: Okay, I think it’s recording. So, uh...who wants to start.
Hisaya: ………
Ori: …………
Hisoka: ……….
Keiichi: ...Damien, you do it.
Damien: ...Fine. Okay, so, we’re talking about like, being one of the Bound, right? So! Put your finger to your pulse. Feel yourself still breathing. You still get hungry, you still need to sleep. You’re not a walking corpse. You’re alive. But you can survive things a living human wouldn’t. You can patch yourself up with the same stuff ghosts are made of. You use the same powers they do. You can’t fully die again without extreme circumstances. You can interact with ghosts when humans can’t. You’re dead.
Think of it like being Schrodinger’s Zombie, I guess? It’s not as simple as being alive or dead. You sort of exist in both states at once. Like, a consubstantiativity thing.
Hisaya: The philosophical shit doesn’t matter. Point is, you have powers. You don’t die. You’re not possessed. You’ve just got a god of death sharing your body.
Damien: And that’s because at some point, you made a deal after you died.
Ori: A- the Bargain. I’m afraid I cannot really speak much on it aside from…
Hisoka: We know, we know, he stared at you until you agreed. Anyways, I’ll explain. When you died, a minor death god intervened. Your Geist. Great, isn’t it? I don’t know why they choose you, but…. for me, I remember mine reaching out to me in a liminal space. Like those pictures of endless cubicles or flooded malls.
Hisaya: Don’t remember much myself. She just popped out of the waters and reached out for me. Dunno why but I couldn’t turn away. Like I said, it’s a bit fuzzy.
Damien: I got lost...I think. Then fog settled in and he showed up. I made the deal and I...don’t know, but I guess I got out?
Keiichi: Uh. Heh. I wish we could all say more but most of us don’t remember a lot other than just waking up here in Dolor. Buuuut, we all know enough to pass onto you! And that’s what matters.
Ori: As I said before, I don’t remember what happened, but I believe I was stared at until I agr-
Hisoka: Yeah, yeah, anyways. When you agree, you’re brought back. Free ticket to life! Not for you, but for the Geist who’s hitched a ride alongside you. But they don’t wanna hurt ya, usually. Just…. Well, I don’t know every reason why they come back. There’s something in it for both of you, though.
Damien: Yeah. It’s a two-way street, basically. You need to work together...and you’ll have to because you’re stuck with each other. You’re sharing the same brainspace, essentially, but...well, you’ve probably noticed you’re still able to control your own actions. It’s weird but you get used to it.
Hisaya: That’s mostly true. If they’re sufficiently in the grip of strong enough emotions they might lash out. You can try to talk them down from it but it’s not easy. Usually.
Ori: [indistinct pained noise]
Keiichi: Once you guys get to know each other a little better, it gets easier! Look, you can’t be...too mad at them. I mean, we’re calling them gods of death, but that’s only kiiiiinda true? They used to be ghosts, once.
Hisaya: ...Geists drank from the Rivers of Death. It gave them power no ghost should have. But it turned them into something not fundamentally human anymore. If they ever were in the first place. It completely stripped away whatever their identity was beyond a few atavistic traits.
Ori: But we do have a mission to find out what their goals are, and if we do, perhaps both of us will benefit once again.
Hisoka: Yeah, but it’s a good deal as it is. You get ghost powers. They get help. What more could you ask for?
Damien: So! Basically! You both get a symbiotic relationship, and if you help each other to work out whatever made you not want to stay dead, then things will get better and your Geist will...start recovering and get their humanity back.
Keiichi: Annnnnd I think that covers it, right?
Damien: Well, we’re running out of tape, so...yeah, I guess.
TL;DR
Living, Dead
A Sin-Eater is a gestalt being of a dead human and a ghost who have transcended both of their natures to become something like a (very) minor god of death. They’re neither living, dead, or undead, but something that takes aspects of all three.
Rent-Free in Your Head
Your Geist exists alongside you. You share thoughts and emotions, but you remain in control of your physical body...most of the time. Sometimes a sufficiently traumatized or angered Geist will manifest and lash out. You can try to talk them down, but it’s difficult early on.
Ghosts are People, Too
Both Geists and normal ghosts are people, just traumatized ones. While they might act out and exist in negative emotions, time and patience will bring them out of it. The more you uncover their past, the more you can help them work through it.

A Seed Hidden in the Heart Chapter 16: The One With a Little Hope
AN:I'M BACK!!!!!!!!!!!! And with a brand new chapter for you guys. Was it worth the wait? I don't know but here it is! Enjoy!
Since the summons arrived Zelda entered into a state that was a combination of depression and catatonic. She walked around like a zombie, a shell of her former self that could perform her basic humanly functions. Though not lacking in her duties as a teacher her students noticed that Zelda wasn’t herself and Rosalind and Theo asked if there was anything they could do to help but not even Mary knew how to help Zelda beyond just being there. Mary wouldn’t begin to say she understood what Zelda was feeling, yes she loved Vida like her own but the connection that Zelda and Vida had was something deeper. That connection was why whenever Vida was around Zelda painted on a smile to allude that nothing was wrong, acted like everything was normal when every night after tucking Vida into bed Zelda cried. All Mary could do was hold her and wish that there was something that she could do. It came to her one afternoon on a Saturday in April.
That day had been particularly bad. Zelda wouldn’t stop crying, she couldn’t even muster enough energy to get out of bed. Mary shuffled Vida out, saying Zelda was just a little sick and she was okay. Vida looked at her like she didn’t believe her, and to be honest Mary didn’t even believe herself, but she agreed and headed downstairs. In the kitchen Mary and Hilda shared a quick look and a slight nod. Hilda will take care of Zelda, Mary will handle Vida. Armed with a list of errands Mary and Vida left. After stopping at the pharmacy and the home improvement store for some fertilizer the last thing on Hilda’s list was to fix a clasp on a watch of hers that broke. Mary loathed to go into the shopping district on a weekend but wanting to give Hilda as much time as possible she decided to suck it up and go.
The bell on the jewelry store tinkled when Mary entered shaking off her umbrella as it started to rain lightly. Vida who was decked out in her raincoat with matching boots and hat shook her head when Mary took her hat off, causing red ringlets and little droplets of water to fly everywhere. Mary smiled and fussed over Vida’s hair to make it somewhat neat. A salesperson came over and asked how they could help them. When Mary explained that she needed a watched to be fixed the salesperson led her over to one of the glass cases to have a closer look. At first Vida was next to her, holding onto the side of her leather trench coat but becoming bored at having looked at everything in the case started to wonder. Mary was two seconds away from calling Vida back but stopped. Other than her, Vida, and a few other employees there were only two other customers and Vida was smart enough to not go with anyone or out of the store so Mary turned back to the sales person but kept an ear out for the slight ‘squelch’ that Vida’s boots made on the shops carpet. After several minutes of looking through watches they eventually found something that could match the original fixture the sales clerk went into the back to talk to the person who did the actual hardware work Mary turned to find Vida.
Vida was standing in front of a glass case filled with little charms and pendants for necklaces and bracelets. The charms were all arranged by shape, grouped together by metal type, gold and silver mostly, and gemstone options. Mary quickly recognized the birthstone gems as the pieces were arranged in neat double rows of six. Vida was, of course, fascinated with the little bear pendants. The pendants were about half the size of Mary’s finger tip but the detail was impressive. The 3D bears had little eyes and noses and a tail on its sitting bottom plus soft carving marks to resemble fur. On one foot was a small round gemstone that fit perfectly with the pad of the bears paw.
“What do you have here baby bear?”
“Look at the little bears Mamma they’re so cute.”
“That they are.” The longer Mary stared at the bears wheel started to turn in her head as an idea started to form. The sales clerk that was helping them with the watch came back pulling Mary away from the bear pendants. The watch was fixable and Mary filled the work order so Hilda could pick it up later.
“Is there anything else I can help you with Ma’am?” Mary thought about it for a minute. The bear pendants came back to mind.
“There is one thing.” Mary took the clerk over to the bear pendants and he pulled out the little shelving they rested on out so she could have a closer look. The bears were, as Mary predicted, part of the stores birthstone collection so each bear had a different gemstone. A gold bear with a 36 inch chain was almost $200, a little steep but for Zelda it was worth it.
“What do you think baby bear?” Mary picked up Vida so she could see the bears more clearly. “Should we get one for you Mom?”
“Yes!” Vida then told the sales clerk when her birthday was, May 16th, and he pulled out a pre boxed bear with an emerald gemstone.
“Would you like to get it engraved? It’s $10 and we can do it today in about an hour.” Tempted Mary agred, she and Vida could get lunch and come back to get the necklace. Mary told the clerk what she wanted. When she came back for it the necklace was wrapped up nicely in a little box with a blue ribbon.
After some debate Mary decided not to wait until Mother’s Day to give the necklace to Zelda. That next day she recruited Vida to make their special breakfast, french toast light on the powdered sugar and syrup with some egg whites, a small cup of fruit, a lightly buttered biscuit, and a mug of coffee. Balancing the tray Mary and Vida brought it back upstairs to surprise Zelda. Mary hung back with the try as Vida, after setting down the mug of coffee that she was entrusted with on the nightstand, climbed up onto Zelda’s bed to wake her. It didn’t take much, Zelda hasn’t been sleeping well either and it only took a little prodding to wake her.
“Surprise!” Zelda looked at Vida then at Mary as she placed the breakfast tray.
“What is this?”
“Me and Momma made you our special breakfast. To make you feel better.” Zelda gasped a little in shock, she didn’t know that Vida picked up on her mood, but hid it well.
“Thank you baby.” The bed dipped as Mary joined them on the bed and they shared breakfast. When the tray was empty Mary handed Vida the small box that held the necklace.
“We got you this Mommy.” Zelda took the box, not sure what it could be or why she was receiving this gift. After untying the ribbon the dark blue box opened with a soft crack. Zelda’s eyes widened and she gave a faint gasp. “Do you like it Mommy?” The tiny gold bear looked so much bigger cradled in the soft lining of the box, tiny emerald catching the light. The new addition to the bear, the thing that had Zelda almost in tears, was a tiny engraving on the bears other paw that said ‘V.S.’
“I love it.” Vida smiled and snuggled into her mother’s side. Zelda handed the box to Mary so she could place the necklace on her. Sweeping Zelda’s hair over her shoulder Mary fastened the necklace around Zelda’s slender neck. Though not big the bear stood out against Zelda’s pale skin, the pendant resting lightly on her chest. When the necklace was securely in place Zelda turned back to face Mary and brought her close to share a kiss. Mary returned it, making it just a little deeper and longer.
____________________
After that Zelda was in a better mood. She wasn’t 100%, Mary believed that wouldn’t happen until this whole mess was over, but she stopped crying and could muster real small smiles. She also realized that she couldn’t ignore the inevitable anymore. She needed to hire an attorney. Over the next week or so Zelda contacted several law firms that looked to be in her price range and could help her. None of them, even after a respected waiting time, responded back. Zelda started to panic, she knew that Faustus would have an attorney that would destroy her in a single breath. If she wanted even a snowballs chance in hell to keep her daughter she needed her own representation but with no responses she was starting to go back into her depressed state. Just as it seemed that hope was lost Zelda received a very interesting email on Saturday afternoon.
Dear Ms. Spellman,
I heard from the grapevine that you are looking for an attorney for an upcoming custody case. My name is Daniel Webster, I don’t have a law firm nor work for one but I do have a license to practice law with a decade worth of trial experience. An old friend of mine from one of the law firms that you contacted pointed me in your direction and gave me your email, I hope you don’t mind. I would like to take your case pro bono. To prove that I am not a scammer we can meet in a neutral location on your terms and I have attached some links to a few of the cases that I worked on. Write me back when you can.
Signed, Daniel Webster
Deciding to take a leap of faith Zelda wrote back to Mr. Webster that she would meet him at Hilda’s book shop just after breakfast. Vida was with Mary, Zelda dropped them off at the park with a promise that if they got tired or if the weather turned bad to come to the store. Dr. Cee allowed her to use his back office for the meeting, it was quiet and it plus the tea that Hilda gave her helped her remain calm. At five past ten Hilda let in a middle age man with short white hair and beard and dressed in a nice but not flashy navy blue suit.
“Ms. Spellman.” Mr. Webster held out his hand and they shook hands for a brief moment. Hilda asked Mr. Webster if he would like anything but he said no. With that Hilda closed the door behind her and she and Mr. Webster were alone. Mr. Webster opened his briefcase and took out a legal pad and pen. “So let’s begin. According to court documents a Faustus Blackwood is suing you for full custody of your daughter.”
“Yes.”
“Is he the child’s biological father?”
“Unfortunately.”
“And when did your relationship end?”
“About a month after I found out I was pregnant.” After she gave her answer Mr. Weber straightened up.
“You have had no contact with Mr. Blackwood before now?”
“None whatsoever.”
“Good. We can use that. Do you have the girls birth certificate?” Zelda pulled out a folder from her purse that contained all of the important papers regarding Vida. Each family member had their own folder in a locked drawer in the credenza next to the kitchen. Zelda handed Mr. Weber Vida’s birth certificate. Mr. Webster scanned over the document and his eyes widened. Zelda didn’t know if this was a good thing or a bad.
“Ms. Spellman we have nothing to worry about.” Zelda’s heart stopped in her chest but it was a good stop. A huge wave a relief blew over her and she felt like she could breathe again without this crushing weight against her. She didn’t know why she had so much confidence in Mr. Webster but she did and if he said she didn’t have to worry than she won’t. She really hoped he was right.
With their meeting concluded Zelda went out to the main area. Mary and Vida weren’t there, they still must be at the park. Zelda, after debate decided to walk the short distance to the park. The weather was nice, sunny with just a bit of cloud and a nice breeze that was refreshing but not knee shaking. When she arrived at the park Vida was hanging from the monkey bars with Mary close to her ready to spring into action if Vida needed her. Zelda was impressed as Vida made the last four bars to the landing on the jungle gym set. Though too far away to hear Mary said something that made Vida flush with pride and she ran off to the higher part of the jungle gym. When Zelda reached Mary she took the other woman’s hand, lacing their fingers together.
“Meeting went well?” Zelda nodded and rested her head against Mary’s shoulder. Given hope Zelda could relax enough to enjoy physical contact with Mary. Mary let go of Zelda’s hand to drape her arm over Zelda’s shoulder. They stayed that way until Vida called out to them, she was standing at the opening of a slide. Zelda moved to the end so that when Vida reached it she scooped her up. Vida giggled as Zelda pressed her close and kissed her cheek.
“Ready to go?” Vida nodded and they, after Zelda took Mary’s hand again, walked back to the car to go home.

Rumbelle Fic: Marinara on Main (6/?)

Has it really been a year since I updated this? Damn I suck XD
-,-,-,-,-,-
The one week of mandatory recovery and therapy had to be the slowest and most boring time of Belle’s life.
Sure there were some interesting moments, like when Jefferson brought his daughter Grace over to paint her toenails (sparkly and messy but still appreciated) and she cried from being able to feel the tickling of the brush. Or when Will snuck a bag of plastic stars from the children’s ward and glued them to the ceiling above her bed. It was a much better site than the blasé roof, even if she did get a few curious looks from the nurses.
Merlin did his best to stop by between his breaks, but he helping Moe carry the business while she was out of commission. She swore if she ever came across a hefty inheritance from a distant mysterious relative, she’d sign it away to him. Well, maybe two thirds of it. Girl had to pay her bills after all.
Her most consistent visits were from her father, who had reluctantly come around to Belle temporarily moving in with Mr. Gold, and Mr. Gold himself.
Moe French would spend roughly an hour at Belle’s bedside, usually texting Merlin with status updates on the business or what things to pack up for Belle. It was quiet and Belle saw his eyes maybe twice, but it wasn’t as tense as it could have been and he always kissed her goodbye.
Mr. Gold’s visits were much more pleasant. He would roll into the room as soon as Moe left, carrying with him some kind of treat his right-hand man Dove would smuggle in to share. Sometimes, if his medicine didn’t have him too lightheaded, and if she wasn’t too exhausted from physical therapy, he’d read whatever magazines the waiting room had on hand. She particularly liked the cooking magazines.
“Okay, read the strawberry tart recipe again.” Belle requested, slowing jotting down the ingredients. She had begun to regain movement in her limbs on her second day, and with a little help from the nurses, she could sit up in bed. Walking was still a challenge, but Dr. Whale was lending her a walker to assist her until she was healed enough to walk on her own.
Mr. Gold chuckled at her enthusiasm, flipping the page back. “You do know I can just rip them out, right?”
“Don’t you dare!” Belle gasped.
Mr. Gold shook his head in amusement. “1¼ cups of flour…”
Belle watched him in appreciation. He was able to open his black eye now, and most of his stitches had been removed. The only noticeable proof of last week’s catastrophe was the scabbed indention above his eye that would soon become a scar. Despite the horrible way he had received it, Belle couldn’t help but thing he’d look rather handsome with a few rustic scars.
A knock on the door cut Mr. Gold off from his reading. He and Belle turned to see Dr. Whale smiling at them.
“Yes?” Gold growled.
The doctor stiffened and flipped through his clipboard. “You and Miss French will be ready to check out this afternoon.”
“Bloody brilliant!” Mr. Gold exclaimed as he rolled closer to the doctor. “I’ll take the release forms now.”
“In a moment. I have to read you a few check-out policies, procedure you know.”
“Oh for the love of…” Mr. Gold held his tongue, not wanting to stress Belle or lose his temper in front of her.
“Could I at least start filling them out? I promise I won’t let him leave.” Belle negotiated, amused.
The doctor looked back and forth between the couple before sighing and handing Mr. Gold the forms.
“Please don’t make me lose my license.”
“I never make promises, only deals.” Mr. Gold replied, rolling backwards to Belle’s bedside. He was becoming too skilled in a wheelchair and needed to leave as soon as possible.
“Don’t be cruel, he’s only doing his job.” Belle chastised Mr. Gold as soon as the doctor left.
Gold leveled the clipboard and started filling out the papers with a mutter of irritation.
Belle only laughed. If she was going to be living with him for an unspecific amount of time, she’d have to get used to his bouts of playful pouting. It was amazing to think that they hadn’t been dating long at all, and unofficially moving in together would undoubtedly bring out some of their more unappealing traits.
Within the hour, Belle and Mr. Gold were being rolled out the hospital. Mr. Gold was swearing at the tight-lipped, stern nurse that he could “bloody well walk with his cane”.
“Hospital policy.” The nurse barked, all but dumping him in the drop-off zone. Mr. Gold jumped from the chair, growling as he steadied himself on his cane and limped to Belle’s side.
“The nerve.” He huffed, hiding a grin when Belle laughed into her hand.
“Are you sure you should be walking?” Belle inquired, nodding to his heavily bandaged leg underneath his expensive pants leg. Dr. Whale had insisted they dress comfortably until their injuries healed, yet Mr. Gold was dressed to the t’s in his nice clothes why Belle had swung for a gently worn sundress.
“I’m fine, really.” Mr. Gold assured, though he leaned more heavily on his cane. “I sprained it more than anything. None of the screws were bent in anyway. I won’t even need therapy.”
Belle nodded and looked down guiltily. She felt Gold tuck her hair back and kiss the edge of her ear, the effort causing him to shake.
“I’d do it all again in a heartbeat.”
Belle smiled, picking up the hand resting on the back of the wheelchair and giving it kiss. “My hero. But, you really should sit down.”
Mr. Gold pulled his discarded wheelchair closer to Belle and sat down with a relieved grumble.
Conversation seized between them and in no time, they watched in surprise as Mr. Gold’s Cadillac pulled around the drop-off zone.
“How…” Belle gasped when it rolled in more closely. Other than the slightly discolored grill, it looked exactly as it had before the accident.
“Billy the mechanic owed me a favor.” Mr. Gold shrugged. “He did a lot better than I thought he would.”
Belle nodded as a tall man, presumably Dove, stepped from the driver’s seat. Belle had only seen him a few times during her deliveries but had never had the opportunity to speak to him more personally.
“Mr. Gold,” he nodded professionally, turning a light smile down to Belle. “Miss French.”
“Hello.” Belle smiled back, his tall height along with her wheelchair sitting causing her head to spin.
Mr. Gold stood from the chair and stepped over to the car, intending to be a gentleman and open the back door. However, he found the back seat occupied by none other than his son.
“Baelfire.” Gold greeted sternly. “Is there an early release day I forgot about or are you skipping school?”
“Let’s go with the first one.” Bae smirked as he slid from the back. “You look good for a guy who nearly got wrapped around a tree.”
“Not funny.” He growled, motioning him to stand aside so that Belle could slide in.
She took Gold’s hand as Dove released her into Gold’s grip. She felt stiff from the effort, but more embarrassed that it took three people to get her into a car. She hoped she could be more independent during her stay at Gold’s. She refused to be a burden to anyone, especially her somewhat-boyfriend and his son.
“I should probably sit in the back with Miss Belle.” Bae whispered. “Wouldn’t want you two to get too excited while you’re in recovery.”
Belle bit back a giggled while Mr. Gold’s face erupted in flame.
“One more crack like that and I’m going to un-overlook you playing hooky today.” He warned, not meeting Belle’s eyes as he crawled into the front seat.
The ride was quiet and slow, and Belle was thankful to see the outside world. Her stomach flopped a bit when they eased into the driveway of the salmon mansion. Before her and Mr. Gold’s relationship—or what any rational person would call it—began, she used to be so excited and giddy at the thought of a few stolen seconds with him. As soon as the pizza was out of her hands, they were just Belle and Mr. Gold, not pizza delivery girl and customer.
Now they were going to be temporary roommates, and while some women would see that scenario as an erotic fantasy come to life, Belle couldn’t help but feel sickeningly nervous.
“It feels strange pulling up without a pizza in my hands.” Belle smirked, hoping humor would lift her mood.
Luckily, Mr. Gold chuckled and sent her a gentle smile through the rearview mirror.
“Speaking of pizza, do you think we could still order one tonight?” Baelfire inquired. “It is Friday after all.”
A tense air filled the car, and Mr. Gold could see Belle’s nails digging into the leather seating. Belle’s father nor Merlin had told her what they were doing about deliveries, but judging by how stressed they both were (yes, Belle could tell no matter how much they tried to hide it), probably not very good.
“Miss French.”
Belle looked up to find Dove standing over her, offering his hand with a gentle smile.
Dove helped her sit on the edge of the seat while he grabbed her walker from the trunk. Belle felt so embarrassed to have to use it but noted to herself to count her blessings that she hadn’t been paralyzed in the crash. She’d only have to use it for a few weeks, and would be back to rolling pizza dough in a month, give or take. She hoped to move the process up a bit, hoped she could push herself to make a miraculous recovery.
“Mr. Knight dropped a bag off this morning.” Dove stated as he helped her get a grip on her walker.
“Yes, my father mentioned he would yesterday.” Belle said with a hiss.
Mr. Gold seethed as he tried to get out of the car by himself, his leg screaming in protest. It was time for more of his pain meds and that would mean an early night, the last thing he wanted with Belle’s first night in his home.
Baelfire stood beside his father and watched Dove escort Belle into the house, her bag in his opposite hand.
“What’s with the frown?” Baelfire smirked. “You’re not jealous, are you?”
Gold glared at his son. “Of course not. Don’t you have homework?”
“It’s Friday.” Bae reminded him as he swayed to the house. “And I’m ordering pizza.”
“Fine.” Gold agreed with a sigh. He was so tired he would probably sign over the deed to the house if Bae asked for it. “I’ll send Dove to pick it up.”
Bae turned, confused. “Why can’t we have it delivered?”
“Just…I don’t know about their delivery status right now.” Gold sighed as he limped into the house. “Just go with Dove, alright?”
Bae sighed, sensing that there was more to the story decided to push for details on an empty stomach. “Fine.”
Gold looked around the corner, nodding in approval at how the furniture had been moved. The room he had Belle set up in was more of a small parlor connected to the downstairs bathroom. He had been meaning to take out the wall that separated the room and the living room but was not glad he had put it off.
He stepped into the room to find down waiting by the bathroom door.
“She’s changing.” Dove stated simply.
Gold nodded. “I owe you a great debt for all you’ve done.”
Dove shrugged. “I’ll remember that the next time my nephew’s soccer team sells chocolate bars.”
Mr. Gold chuckled, his breath stilling when the bathroom door opened and Belle stepped out. She wore a loose pair of men’s pajamas, the little pocket on the shirt ripped in the middle. Her feet were bare and her hair mused, and she had forgone the walker to take on the short space.
She looked absolutely stunning.
“Comfortable?” he teased.
“My limbs feel like noodles. I feel great.” she laughed, using Dove’s offered hand to help her sit on the bed.
“Bae wanted to pick up pizza for dinner, is that okay with you?”
Belle smiled sheepishly, tucking her curls behind her ear. “I just took a pain pill…”
“Say no more.” Gold smiled.
“Sorry.”
“Not at all, I think I may follow suit.”
Belle nodded, the pill kicking in faster than she thought it would.
“I’ll…check on you later?” Gold suggested.
“I’d like that.” Belle said drowsily, carefully curling her legs onto the bed.
He didn’t take his eyes off of her until Dove closed the door.
“This is going to be an interesting few weeks.” Dove said, the teasing nature of his voice a earning him a glare from his employer.
“I’m going to take a pill.” Gold growled.
-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-
When Belle opened her eyes again, it was dark outside and her head was swimming. She groggily felt on the nightstand for her phone. She blinked the itchy tears away until her eyes adjusted to the light. 2:11 a.m. Damn, she had slept the whole day!
Belle groaned, wishing she would fall right back to sleep. However, she was wide awake now, and her back was cramping. She needed to walk around, maybe get a snack from the kitchen. She hadn’t eaten since her barely passable breakfast at the hospital.
Her muscles cramped as she sat up, her lungs feeling smaller. She took several deep breaths before she reached for her walker.
She did her best to enter the kitchen quietly, which was hard to do with a clunky walker loudly tapping on the hardwood. After some hassling she found the light switch and was immediately floored with awe at the site of Gold’s antique kitchen.
A large, stainless steel refrigerator purred near the back door while several cooking tools awaited silently to be used. Her kitchen apartment above French Bread could probably fit in this kitchen, and she bet all the eyes on the stove worked as well.
With renewed excitement she limped to the pantry and searched its contents. She hummed, noting a packet of yeast on the top. Gripping the walker with one hand, she stretched on her toes to reach the things she needed, hissing as her back cramped from the effort.
“Need a hand with that?”
Belle twisted around, grabbing her walker before she could fall.
Baelfire hissed. “Sorry.”
“No it’s fine.” Belle gasped, stepping aside. He was just about her height, maybe a few inches shorter than his father, but he reached the yeast packet with less effort than she had.
“Thanks.” Belle smiled. “Did I wake you?”
“Nah,” Bae assured, leaning on the counter. “My sleep cycle’s been off this week with Dad in the hospital.”
Belle looked at the teen, his curly hair disrupted from restless sleep, the color under his eyes too dark for a boy his age.
“So whatcha making?” Bae inquired, smiling brightly despite the later hour.
“Don’t laugh, but I was going to make pizza. But if you want something else…”
“No, pizza sounds great. The one I ordered earlier was…I don’t know, bland?”
Belle chuckled. “Dad must have made the sauce. It’s his recipe but he never makes it right.”
Bae chuckled. “Is everything you guys make your dad’s creation?”
Belle shrugged as she scooped flour out of the properly labeled container on the counter. “Technically yes, but Merlin and I add our own flair to each thing we cook. The recipe’s always different each time, but there’s always a few ingredients that never change.” She said with a wink.
Bae nodded. “Anything I can do to help?”
Belle hummed. “Do you have a food processor?”
Bae nodded and opened one of the cabinets, pulling the processor out with ease.
“Great. Get out what you want on the pizza. Do we have enough cheese?”
Bae pulled a pile of things from the refrigerator, including a nearly empty bag of shredded mozzarella.
Belle surveyed what else he had brought out and nodded as she put a recipe together in her head.
“How fresh is that cream?”
Bae bravely opened the carton and smelled the dairy substance, sighing with relief when he didn’t smell anything sour.
“Great, find me a pan and some butter and we can make alfredo pizza.”
“Sweet!” Bae cheered, obeying Belle’s instructions.
Soon enough the teen was helping her chop chicken and kneed pizza dough, chuckling when she flicked flour in his curls.
“This is great.” Bae said as Belle sprinkled oregano on the pizza. “I’ve been living off diner food and cereal all week. I never though I’d miss home cooking so much.”
Belle paused in her pizza-making, her eyes looking over his lanky frame.
“Baelfire I’m…I’m sorry about all of this.”
Bae looked around the kitchen, confused. “The flour will come off the counters.”
Belle scoffed. “No, I mean for the accident. For borrowing your dad’s car. For his injury. Everything.”
Bae stared at her, unsure what he could say to make her feel better. Whenever he and Emma fought she would just punch him in the arm and everything would be fine afterwards. Hitting her, even playfully, did not look like a good idea in her condition.
“Really, Belle, it’s fine.” Bae assured awkwardly. “It’s not like you’re a crazy girlfriend who crashed my dad’s car to keep him to yourself.”
Belle laughed at the idea, turning to put the pizza in the oven.
“I mean, I guess I was a little mad at first, but I got over it. My dad really likes you, and spending these last few weeks with you has made him happier than I’ve seen him in a long time. I’m sure there was no lost love being in the hospital with you, even if you were doped up half the time.”
Belle chuckled. “A third of the time, actually. Between you and me though, your dad’s a real lightweight.”
Bae snorted. “I bet. And while we’re dropping secrets, that bit about me living off of diner food was a white lie. Emma brought me some of her mom’s cooking to keep me going.”
“Ah, and I bet she made you dessert afterwards.” Belle teased.
Bae’s blush was as read as pizza sauce. “Well…”
“Unless you want to be grounded until you graduate, I suggest you not answer that.”
Belle and Baelfire both turned around to find Gold leaning against the doorframe, eyeing the messy countertops and his flour-dusted son with amusement.
“Bit late for a midnight snack, isn’t it?” he teased, limping in.
“More like too early.” Belle said. “It’s just after three.”
“Indeed. Smells good whatever it is.”
“Chicken alfredo pizza, enough for three.” Belle blushed as he took the seat beside her. This was the first time she had seen him wearing anything but a three-piece suit. It was almost an honor, seeing a piece of him that no one but his son had seen.
“Excellent.” he smiled, turning to his son, dusting some of the flour out of his hair. “Glad to see you’re taking up a trade, m’boy.”
“Yep,” Belle teased. “I’ll have him trained as a sous chef in no time.
Bae rolled his eyes as he went to check on the pizza. Adults were so weird.
In no time the pizza was sliced and passed around, conversation and napkins flowing easily. It was domestic if not unique scene considering the late hour. Unbeknownst to each participant, there was a mutual want to make the event—both the living arrangements and late-night pizza-making, mind you—much more permanent.

Coronavirus Clue? Most Cases Aboard US Aircraft Carrier Are Symptom-Free
Sweeping testing of the entire crew of the coronavirus-stricken U.S. aircraft carrier Theodore Roosevelt may have revealed a clue about the pandemic: The majority of the positive cases so far are among sailors who are asymptomatic, officials say.
The possibility that the coronavirus spreads in a mostly stealthy mode among a population of largely young, healthy people showing no symptoms could have major implications for U.S. policymakers, who are considering how and when to reopen the economy.
It also renews questions about the extent to which U.S. testing of just the people suspected of being infected is actually capturing the spread of the virus in the United States and around the world.
The Navy's testing of the entire 4,800-member crew of the aircraft carrier — which is about 94% complete — was an extraordinary move in a headline-grabbing case that has already led to the firing of the carrier's captain and the resignation of the Navy's top civilian official.
FILE - Seabees coordinate transportation of U.S. Navy sailors assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt who have tested negative for coronavirus disease (COVID-19) to locations off base at Naval Base Guam, April 10, 2020.
Roughly 60 percent of the over 600 sailors who tested positive so far have not shown symptoms of COVID-19, the potentially lethal respiratory disease caused by the coronavirus, the Navy says. The service did not speculate about how many might later develop symptoms or remain asymptomatic.
"With regard to COVID-19, we're learning that stealth in the form of asymptomatic transmission is this adversary's secret power," said Rear Admiral Bruce Gillingham, surgeon general of the Navy.
The figure is higher than the 25% to 50% range offered on April 5 by Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and a member of President Donald Trump's coronavirus task force.
'Disconcerting' data for Pentagon
Defense Secretary Mark Esper, speaking in a television interview on Thursday, said the number of asymptomatic cases from the carrier was "disconcerting."
"It has revealed a new dynamic of this virus: that it can be carried by normal, healthy people who have no idea whatsoever that they are carrying it," Esper told NBC's "Today" morning show.
Such data present challenges to the Pentagon, which is deployed around the world, sometimes in confined environments like submarines, ships and aircraft.
Testing the entire military is not yet feasible, given still-limited testing capacity, officials say, and detecting enough cases without tests is impossible if most cases are asymptomatic.
FILE - Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Frank Rivera assigned to 3rd Medical Battalion, 3rd Marine Logistics Group, sterilizes a building from coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in support of USS Theodore Roosevelt at Naval Base Guam, April 9, 2020.
The U.S. coronavirus death toll — the highest in the world — surged past 31,000 on Thursday after doubling in a week.
It also claimed the life of a sailor from the Theodore Roosevelt this week. Five other members of the crew are hospitalized.
Numbers unknown
Still, the case of the Theodore Roosevelt offers a case study for researchers about how the virus spreads asymptomatically in a confined environment among mostly younger adults.
That cohort has been somewhat underrepresented in the epidemiological data so far, said William Schaffner, an infectious-disease specialist at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
"The findings are of enormous interest because the proportion of people who are asymptomatic is just simply not known," Schaffner said, when asked about the Navy's data.
Vice Admiral Phillip Sawyer, a deputy chief of naval operations at the center of the Navy's coronavirus response efforts, presented the 60% figure in a call with a small group of reporters on Wednesday.
But he declined to speculate about the implications.
"I don't know if we're proving something different," Sawyer said. "I do agree that we are providing some data that some other organizations might not have."

COVID-19 asymptomatics: Why some people contract and recover from a SARS-CoV-2 infection unscathed
One of the reasons Covid-19 has spread so swiftly around the globe is that for the first days after infection, people feel healthy. Instead of staying home in bed, they may be out and about, unknowingly passing the virus along. But in addition to these pre-symptomatic patients, the relentless silent spread of this pandemic is also facilitated by a more mysterious group of people: the so-called asymptomatics.
According to various estimates, between 20 and 45 percent of the people who get Covid-19 — and possibly more, according to a recent study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — sail through a coronavirus infection without realizing they ever had it. No fever or chills. No loss of smell or taste. No breathing difficulties. They don’t feel a thing.

A week after India's coronavirus cases crossed 30 lakh, the total cases on Sunday raced past 35 lakh, with a record single-day spike of 78,761 cases. This is also the biggest single-day spike in the world since the pandemic began, according to news agency The Associated Press.
India's COVID-19 caseload went from 20 lakh to 30 lakh in 16 days and from 10 lakh to 20 lakh in 21 days. As per the fresh guidelines, states cannot implement localised lockdowns outside containment zones without first consulting the Centre.

Tamil Nadu extended lockdown till 30 September but announced furthers relaxations, including scrapping of e-passes and canceling Sunday lockdowns. The state government also allowed clubs, hotels, parks and places of worship to reopen.
