From a young age y/n had always been an anxious child. While her class mates ran around the school yard playing, y/n opted to spend her time curled up in a ball at the corner of the yard, avoiding the concerned looks of teachers. The teachers never bothered her, she was a troubled kid who had good grades so they saw no need to chastise her. She lost her mum early on, and it was no secret that her father was found of the drink. Bother her brothers left home even before their mother died, so the young girl only had herself really.

When Jay returned, he seen the way his sister was and tried to get her out more often. He’d bring her to the park and try encourage her to play with the other children. It always ended in tears, so Jay ended up leaving it, thinking his sister would eventually come out of her shyness and find friends of her own. However in high school y/n became the loner of the class, no one went near her until class projects were due. She was known as the smart one in class, so naturally everyone wanted her on their team to get the good grades. So it was no surprise when she graduated all honours, even became the top of her class. The young girl got scholarships for 4 out of the 5 colleges she applied for, and she started studying forensics and lab.

It was during her early college years when Will came back. Being a doctor, he seen the signs and approached y/n, suggesting she went to get checked out for anxiety. It was in the hospital that y/n had her first panic attack. She was waiting in the waiting room, fiddling with her hands when Dr Charles called out her names. Not being good at talking to people., she often went hours without talking to her brothers, her anxiety hit the roof, and her chest collapsed in on itself. Dr Charles had seen the young girls reaction and called for her brother, before telling him that his sister had anxiety. She winded up in hysterics, and her brother and Charles struggled to help her, before Will started counting their breathing, and the girl started to calm down. Figuring out that counting helped the Halstead girl was a relieve for her brothers. She was given medication to help her, but the odd flare up did happen.

Y/n’s job as a crime scene analyser was a stressful job, but Jay seen his sister become more lively. Her old shy self-became a more energetic young woman, and even though Jay knew that a lot of that was due to the medication Dr. Charles put her on, he could never stop the smile when he seen her passion grow for the work she did. Majority of the crime scenes were never nice to see, but y/n always came with a smile, and left with the attitude to work. Gone were the days Jay would see her sister come to the crime scene with a slouched appearance, staying away from her coworkers and detectives. She begun talking and explaining things to Hank, leaving even Hank impressed with the new y/n.

She’d even spend nights out in Molly’s with Will & Jay after tough cases. Which was where she was when things came down on her. An arson case had just been solved, and y/n had been head of the forensics team for it. It wasn’t often that y/n took the top for cases, due to her anxiety she’d often turn down opportunities like that, but with her anxiety under control she decided to take a chance. Yet the added pressure of meetings with her team and taking control of what went on, y/n couldn’t help the feeling that started to build in her chest.

The Halstead siblings sat in their usual booth at the bar, Jay & Will joking with Severide after coming out of another big case. Many victims had been lost within the fires, and multiple casualties from the fires. Med & 51 had been run off their feet the past few days saving all they could and trying to prevent the fires from spreading, while Pd had been trying to figure out who the person was, and why they were doing it. Multiple charcoaled victims were brought to y/n to analyse, and many scenes were left with little to go by. The big hit was when the arsonist got sloppy, and 51 had gotten to the scene on time to stop the fire, leading to forensics to find his DNA on the letterbox of the front door.

The first sign of y/n’s anxiety would be her being quiet. Having not seen their sister having a panic attack in a while, they never noticed how she stayed away from the conversation, offering a weak smile that they put down to tiredness. The second was when y/n began to pick at the bottles sticker and fidgeting with the bottle. Severide glanced at the younger Halstead as the bottle was heard moving from one hand to the other. The tired sign became evident as y/n cleared her throat and tucked her hair behind her ear before moving in her seat, pushing at Jay slightly to get out.

The fourth sign was the one the Halstead brothers caught onto. Y/n staggered off the booth, hand on her chest as she moved to hold into a stool for balance. Y/n wasn’t one for much drink, so her brothers knew straight away that something was wrong. Glancing at his brother, Will excused himself for Severide to get up before walking towards his sister. Those around them watched as the Halstead sister’s breath became evidently sharp as she made her way to the bathroom. Not caring about it being the women’s bathroom, Will entered after her just as she locked the door to the stall she entered.

“You good?” Jay asked, seeing the slight distress on y/n’s face.

“Bathroom.” Y/n muttered to him ,rushing to get out of the booth and head to the bathroom.

Y/n held her chest as she rushed to close the toilet seat before sitting on it, leaning forwards. Tears streamed down her face as she gasped for breath, and she ignored the knock that came from the door.

Jay had walked to the bar and asked for Stella to help him get into the women’s bathroom. Wanting to be a little sensitive to the fact that it was the women’s bathroom, he got Stella to open the door for him before he went in to his brothers side. Will glanced at his brother with sad eyes, and Jay nodded in understanding.

“Y/n open up please.” Will’s soft vice was heard.

All Will could hear was y/n’s staggered breathing.

“Y/n, let me help.”

“Y/n, I’m going to kick the door in alright.” Jay spoke into the door towards y/n, knowing their sister would probably be in a ball of herself.

Lifting his foot, Jay held onto the sides of the stall as he turned to kick the door, muttering an apology to Stella as he done so. With the door opened, the Halstead’s hearts clenched at the sight of their sister with her knees to her chest, head ducked down. Deciding to move towards their sister, Will gently placed a hand on y/n’s chin, and she flinched at the contact. He forced her to remove her hands from her face and held them in his. She glanced at him with the hood of her eyes, and he smiled reassuringly as he brought her hand to his chest.

Jay watched as Will coached their sister to breath in time with him, and rolled a hand through his hair as she began to breath with their brother. Her breathing turned to hiccups as she started to breath slowly, and Will smiled at her as he placed a hand on her cheek gently.

“We’ll take this slowly Alright?” Will offered, and y/n nodded slightly.

“One.” Ill started, breathing in dramatically, “two.” He repelled his breath, watching y/n try to do the same. “Three.” In “four” out.

Y/n smiled and looked down, wiping her hands before dabbing at her face.

“There you go, that’s it.” Will smiled, talking to her as if she was a child as he wiped a stray tear that fell.

“I’m sorry.” Y/n whispered, looking down.

“It’s okay.” Will reassured her.

“You haven’t had one of them for awhile.” Jay observed, causing his sister to look at him.

“What brought it on?” Will asked, as he moved out of the cubicle so y/n could move to the sink.

“I think taking the lead on the analyses team was a big step, I got a bit freaked out I guess.” Y/n shrugged, cupping water in her hand before splashing her face.

“You were great. But don’t feel you have to continue it now that you’ve done it. What you done was a big case, maybe do a few small ones instead.” Jay stated, kissing the back of her head as he placed his hands on her head and looked at her through the mirror.

“We’re proud of you y/n, you did good. Take it easy on yourself. You took a big step this time, it’ll always be up and down, but your doing amazing regardless.” Will stated, leaning against the sink beside her as he spoke to her.

When y/n left the bathroom she seen Jay talking to a less than impressed Hermann and Will laughing beside him. Seeing the look on her older brothers face, she could tell Hermann was giving out to him about the bathroom door, but it quickly stopped when Stella hit Hermann on the back of the head.

“Take your time and come out when your ready. We can head home and have an early night if you’d like.” Jay stated, running his hands through her hair to get rid of the knots.

“Maybe another drink first.” Y/n smiled weakly, and Jay hugged her from behind.

“Whatever you want.” He smiled at her, kissing her cheek before leaving the bathroom, Will following in toll.

Y/n could only smile at Jay as he turned to face her, and he winked back, letting her take a beer from him before they sat down at their booth, talking with Severide about the time fire department was called to save a cat.

“He was worried about his sister, let him be.” Stella spoke to the older man.

“I’m just saying, you know, there are better ways to getting in than kicking the door in.” Hermann defended himself.

“Sure Hermann, I’ll take it easy next time my sister locks her self in for a panic attack.” Jay stated, rolling his eyes as Stella gave him the three beers.

Spoilers if you haven't seen the episode

To start things off we meet Kara on Earth! I talked more about her here. Shes's dressed similarly to Android 18 when she, 17, and 16 drive to Goku's house in episode 147 of Dragon Ball Z. While watching the episode I was wondering why does Kara's hair look so familiar? Then it hit me. Kara's got Sakuya Kumashiro's hair from Tenchi in Tokyo!

Shout out to recent DC characters enjoy ice cream for the first time like Wonder Woman in the live action movie and Justice League animated movie, and the new DC Super Hero Girls cartoon. As a mint chocolate chip ice cream fan, good first choice of ice cream to enjoy!

Perry puts Clark and Lois on a new beat for the Metropolis "Most Eligible Single" contest because Superman was chosen to be one of the five up for that title. Cat Grant self-invites herself to join the duo to figure out who Superman is through his love life. Lois is sweating bullets at this point. At the contest we meet the potential people for winning the title, Hank Henshaw, Chandi Gupta, Byrna Brilyant, and Silver St. Cloud. I talked more about Hank Henshaw here. We see a darker more bigoted side to him this time around. Will we see him get his cyborg body and become Cyborg Superman in this season or season 3? Who knows. Season 3 is confirmed though.

Dr. Byrna Brilyant is a very deep DC universe cut dating back to 1946, the golden age of comics. Back then Byrna Brilyant was an enemy to Wonder Woman going by the moniker, Blue Snowman.

Byrna in the 1940s makes her first appearance in Sensation Comics #59 (1946) [W: Joye Hummel, P&I: H.G. Peter], where she was a teacher who's father created this compound called blue ice, after his death, she uses it as a way to extort this town after freezing it over for monetary gain.

Byrna makes another appearance in 2010 in Power Girl #7 (2010) [W Justin Gray & Jimmy Palmiotti, P&I: Amanda Conner, C: Paul Mounts, L: John J. Hill] where Dr. Mid-Nite and Power Girl are trying to stop Byrna from committing a robbery but the main bad guy, Vartox shoots a seduction musk rifle at Power Girl but the smell knocks out Dr. Mid-Nite and it works on Byrna, but not Power Girl. This all makes more sense if you read the comic.

Byrna's next appearance post-New 52 was in Superman/Wonder Woman #4 (2014) [W: Charles Soule, P: Paulo Siqueira, I&C: Hi-Fi, L: Carlos M. Mangual] where we see Wonder Woman and Hessia battling the Blue Snowman robots.

Byrna's latest appearance post-DC Rebirth is in DC: Love is a Battlefield #1 (2021) [W: Crystal Fraiser, P&I: Juan Gedeon, C:Ulises Arreola, L: Marshal Dillion, where Byrna is now gender fluid after interrupting a date between Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor. Good on Wonder Woman for letting them go and hoping the realization there is a word for what Byrna was feeling would make them feel much better. So going forward if we meet Byrna again, I'll be referring to them with they/them pronouns, but if its New 52 continuity and before, Byrna will be referred to with she/her pronouns with the continuities to help clarify the pronoun usages.

Chadi Gupta is also another deep cut from the DC universe because she's reference to her comic counterpart from Justice League Europe.

Chandi makes her first appearance in Justice League Europe #47 (1993) [W: Gerard Joes, P: Ron Randall, I: Randy Elliot, C: Gene D'Angelo, L: Willie Schubert] where she's escaping her family and comes across the the JLE and wants to join them. Her energy projection and construct creation powers came in handy for the JLE in issue 50 where she and the rest of the JLE were able to fend off Sonar's attack and that earned her a spot on Justice League Europe as the superhero Maya.

Silver St. Cloud is probably one of the more prominent characters from the DC universe who showed up in MAwS. She got into the pop culture zeitgeist through the Gotham tv show when it aired.

Silver St. Cloud makes her first appearance in Detective Comics #470 (1977) [W: Steven Engleheart, P: Walter Simonson, I: Al Milgrom, C: Jerry Serpe, L: Ben Oda] where she meets Bruce Wayne at a party on his yacht. She eventually becomes one of Bruce Wayne's more prominent love interests and one of the few who were suspecting Bruce to be Batman thanks to his constant disappearing.

She shows up in post-new 52 in the maybe possibly out of cotinuity anthology, Legends of the Dark Knight (2014) digital comics, specifically as a cameo in issue #50, Dr. Quinn's Diagnosis [W: Jim Zub, P&I: Niel Googe, C: Kathryn Layno, L: Saida Temofonte], where Batman is getting psychoanalyzed by Harley Quinn.

If you want to read a comic with a fun appearance of Silver St. Cloud give Batman/Elmer Fudd Special #1 (2017) [W: Tom King, P&I: Lee Weeks, C: Lovern Kindzierski, L: Deron Bennet] a read cuz goddamn is it noir AF and beautifully drawn (a while back DC superheroes crossed over with Looney Tunes characters and its very good. They have also done it with Hanna Barbera characters as well. Give those a read too! They're all fun!)!

The charity that MAwS Silver mentions was first mentioned in Superman #152 (1967) [W: Bill Finger, P&I: Al Plastino] where Superman is accepting a clock medallion for a charity event. In the comics Silver St. Cloud isn't usually working for charities, shes mostly a Gotham socialite.

At the event, the MC (who gives off Funky Flashman vibes imo), asked if anyone has questions and the first to jump on that was George Taylor of the Metropolis Star. I talked about the Metropolis Star here, but for George Taylor...

he actually makes his first appearance here in Action Comics #1 (1938) [W: Jerry Seigel, P&I: Joe Shuster, C: Strauss Engraving Company] where he is the editor-in-chief of the Daily Star.

In the silver age, George Taylor makes his first appearance in Superman #366 (1981) [W: Bob Eozakis, P: Kurt Schaffenberger, I: Frank Chiaramonte, C: Adrienne Roy, L: John Costanza] where he assigns Perry White on the Superboy scoop to see if he's active in Metropolis. In post-Crisis on Infinite continuity, George makes a cameo appearance in Adventures of Superman #451 (1989) [W,P,&I: Jerry Ordway, C: Glenn Whitmoore, L: Albert DeGuzman] where we see George's office door.

In the New 52 continuity, George Taylor makes his first appearance in Action Comics #8 (2012) [W: Grant Morrison, P: Rags Morales, I: Rick Bryant, C: Brad Anderson, L: Pat Brosseau] as editor-in-chief for the Daily Star where in the comic he's proud of Clark and encourages him to take the job at the Daily Planet.

Kara and Jimmy make it into the studio where Lois, Superman, and Cat Grant are and Kara confronts Superman showing off that she's the one in the armor. She is on a two-way radio communications with someone named Primus. Whether that is Brainiac's designation when Kara is on the field or its a different character all together, there is a Primus in the DC universe, not just in the Transformers universe. Btw this isn't Kara's first time siding with an evil faction, she was part of Darkseid's Female Furies in the 2004 Superman/Batman series, specifically in issue #11. You might have also seen it happen in the Superman/Batman: Apocalypse animated movie too.

Primus aka Pren makes his first appearance in Green Lantern #141 (1981) [W: Marv Wolfman, P&I: Joe Stanton, C: Carl Gafford, L: John Costanza] where he is the leader of the alien group, the Omega Men from the Vega star system. They jump Hal when he and Carol Ferris were on vacation thinking Hal is part of the Citadel, an extraterrestrial empire that is conquering the star system the Omega Men are in.

Primus/Pren NuParr makes his New 52 first appearance in Deathstroke #9 (2012), but gets a more prominent role in the Omega Man limited series from 2015 [panel from The Omega Men #1 (2015) W: Tom King, P&I: Barnaby Bagenda, C: Romulo Farjardo Jr., L: Pat Brosseau]. In this continuity, the Citadel is now a corporation that was exploiting Krypton's destruction by by selling stabilized planet cores to other worlds. This comes at a cost where the Vega star system is enslaved by them and those who resisted we killed and the survivors formed the Omega Men.

It's been so long since I wrote her, but I need to get some of my #thoughts out there on my beloved Miss Grey.

Once upon a many years ago when I first made her original blog I unfortunately didn't allow myself to explore Jean's more bristling sides. I loved delving into the kinder aspects of her character, she's self sacrificial, she loves her team and her family, she is always there to protect you. But these are not every aspect of Jean, she's extremely arrogant, cocky, self satisfied, a hypocrite and self righteous. It's something that I think even Marvel writers forget, especially in the 90's when she was relegated to team mom for the most part.

Jean is interesting, because while she's self righteous and holds herself to a higher pedestal, she hates when others put her on a pedestal. She didn't enjoy finding out that Logan named the school after her when she came back from the dead, she doesn't like the high expectations that are often hoisted upon her from both Charles and Scott. Combine this with the fact that she is now whole again, she's the Phoenix, she's a primal cosmic being, and she's scary. I just think the duality of the woman she is, the good and the bad and her desire to literally explode like a sun is super interesting.

It's why I think her frenemyship with Emma is so good, Emma sees the sides of Jean she doesn't like to show, and Jean needs someone in her life to tell her to stop being an asshole. I think deep down Jean is envious of the confidence Emma has, and a lot of that has to do with the fact that Jean's story up until her eventual return in the late 80's was a tragedy. Her powers were stifled by her father figure, she dies and becomes one with a cosmic force that is a part of her and when she's abused and taken advantage of by the Hellfire Club she snaps and commits genocide.

When the younger version of Jean is in the current timeline, she has a conversation with someone about adult Jean. They talk about how she never had a chance, and it's true. Everything was against Jean, even herself, and so it was an easy choice to unalive herself on the moon during the Dark Phoenix Saga. She was terrified of her power, she could see how she was becoming something that frightened her, and now that she has the Phoenix again I think it's the perfect chance for Jean to reclaim these parts of herself that are scary and primal.

I don't know, I just love this character so much, and I will go to bat for her over everything, especially with the endless crowds who love to call her dull or boring, because she isn't when she's actually allowed to be the flawed character she was originally and under Grant Morrison's pen in the early 2000's.

tl;dr I support women's wrongs, and Jean can be both a loving and kind person while also being a complete asshole playground bully and the intricate parts of her character are FASCINATING

I looked up from the curb I was sitting on, still nursing my latest head injury and still mourning the fire damage and ash stains to the clothes I'd been forced to borrow from my brother. A tall man with dark skin, wearing firefighter gear and a resigned but irritated look was glaring down at me.

"Hey, Chief Boden. How's the family?"

A short response rumbled up from his chest. "Dresden."

I looked past him to the building his crew was still dealing with. "It's not my fault."

"Hank? Karrin Murphy to see you." Platt's voice came over the receiver from the front desk.

"Send her up."

A buzzing of a lock release and several terse footsteps across the Intelligence bullpen later, Voight shut the door to his office behind the petite blond woman. He walked around his desk, seated himself, and took out a bottle. He poured them each a small glass.

"So, you called me, Lieutenant. Was it just so you didn't drink alone, or can we get to the point?" She still took the glass.

A smile pulled at one side of Voight's face. "I knew your father, Collin, when he ran Special Investigations. Back when they called it the 'Black Cat Squad'."

"Mm."

"So I got a case my team's working that don't make no sense except the kind your father used to figure out. They're good cops, every one of 'em, but they're not ready for what's really out there. So I gotta ask you... how much are you like your father?"

"I want to thank you for taking the time to see me, Dr Charles." Michael Carpenter passed the man a paper plate laden with a burger and potato salad as he settled into the lawn chair next to him.

"Please, Michael, I'm off hours and this is as far off the books as you can get, call me Daniel." The older man inclined his head in thanks as he made an initial sampling of the food and collected his thoughts. "So, I gotta say, all the years of you being an Emergency Department regular, your stories about 'monsters' and 'triumph over evil' were a bit of a running joke if you'll forgive me for saying. Everyone in the E.D. just thought you had a great sense of humor about being at the center of misfortune so often, and were a bit of a storyteller."

"Never saw it as misfortune, just work that needed doing."

"Yeah, so Anthony tells me. I'll admit I was a little surprised to have him send someone my way as a patient, given that we're not exactly on the same page about the 'bigger' things in the world, so to speak."

Michael smiled, working on his own burger. "Father Forthill believes in the power of faith, but he also believes in putting our faith in trained professionals. So, how would you like to begin?"

"I usually find the beginning works best. Why don't you tell me about when you got that fancy toothpick of yours?" He nodded towards Amoracchius.

Connor and the Brat {Part 2}

“They’re going to have to do something about the new admit upstairs.” Now Connor wasn’t normally one for hospital gossip but he had a feelings the nurses were talking about the girl from earlier in the day. He stopped at the nurses station and picked up a tablet pretending to be busy looking at notes.

“I heard she bit Chad when he tried to search her.

“I heard she just about put him in a headlock over it, the girl is definitely where she needs to be-“ The nurses turned at Connor wide eyed as he slammed the tablet onto the counter top and seethed over to them.

“Or maybe you should start looking for a new line of work if you can’t see trauma in a young woman.” The nurses stood there shifting their weight foot to foot clearly uncomfortable that they had been caught talking about patients by Connor.

“Or maybe you should go see for yourself. It’s easy to talk shit when you’re not the one that has to deal with her.” The other two nurses turned back at their colleague who had dared to open their mouth and Connor walked next to her staring down into her now terrified for like eyes.

“It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out she’s scared of men. Which one of you thought it would be a good idea to have a man search her? That’s completely against protocol and-“

“Doctor Rhodes?” The young nurse was lucky as Connors attention was snagged by Dr. Charles calling to him and signaling him over.

“I suggest you watch how you talk about patients if you want to continue working here.” He whispered to her before walking over to Dr. Charles. “Yes?”

“I’m sure you’re aware by now the…issues we’ve come across on the psych wing.” Connor clenched his jaw and nodded. “Well it seems that Ms. Scott only wants to be seen by you, she won’t let anyone else near her.”

“But I’m not a Psychatrist, I can’t treat her.”

“No, but you can help make her comfortable so we can work with her.” Connor followed after him to the psych ward and watched as pretty much everyone steered clear of the woman he only knew as Brat.

“She’s in her room. Someone’s going to have to stand outside and make sure nothing happens. Room 1316.” Connor wasn’t sure who answered his unvoiced question but he nodded and started walking down the hallway, stopping once he reached her doorway. Edward is the adoptive son of Carlisle and Esme Cullen, as well as the son-in-law of Charlie Swan and Renée Dwyer. He is the adoptive brother of Emmett and Alice Cullen, and Rosalie and Jasper Hale.

Edward Anthony Masen was born on June 20, 1901 in Chicago, Illinois; the only child of Edward and Elizabeth Masen. His father provided Edward with many advantages as a successful lawyer, including music lessons and the opportunity to attend private school; however, he and his father were rather emotionally distant due to his busy career that often drew him away from home for business. This absence was made up for by his relationship with his mother; he was the center of her life.

Edward excelled at his studies and became an accomplished pianist. As he grew older, Edward became enamored with the life of a soldier. World War I raged during most of his adolescence, and Edward dreamed of joining the army as soon as he turned 18, which he reminisced about in Midnight Sun, saying that his love for his mother was the only thing that made him reluctant to the thought other than his underage. That changed, however, when he and his parents became sick with the Spanish Influenza in 1918. His father died in the first wave of the influenza. In 1933, Carlisle changed a would-be socialite named Rosalie Hale into a vampire after finding her left for dead by her fiancé. Carlisle and Esme were sometimes concerned that he had no romance in his life, which was partly what prompted Carlisle to change Rosalie. However, as stunningly beautiful as Rosalie was, Edward could not stand her shallow and self-absorbed mind, and the two became nothing more than siblings, and weren't always on good terms. In 1935, Emmett McCarty joined the family when Rosalie found him near death from a bear attack and fell in love with him. Already vampires, Jasper and Alice sought out and found the Cullens in 1950, and adopted themselves into the family after both escaping their tragic pasts. The moment they arrived, Alice moved into Edward's room, much to his dismay.

When the Cullen family were living in Alaska, they encountered the Denali coven, the only other group that shared their diet of animal blood. The leader Tanya showed affection toward Edward, but he did not share that interest.

Halloween 2023 marathon: 6-8

La Llorona (dir. Ramon Peon, 1933)

Dr. Ricardo de Acuna and his wife Ana are celebrating their son Juan's fourth birthday. Ricardo's aged father is not so pleased about it though because he is convinced their family has long been cursed. Years ago, Ricardo's older brother was murdered on his fourth birthday, so the old man is convinced the same fate will befall Juan. A skeptical rationalist, Ricardo isn't worried, but little does he know there is a shadowy figure lurking about the house intent on snatching up his son. And what of reports of seemingly supernatural murders accompanied by the wailing of La Llorona, the ghost of a wronged woman who murdered her own child in spiteful rage-- a ghost whose story happens to be connected to Ricardo's family.

I first heard about La Llorona from the Haunted Blowfish YouTube channel. As far as can be known, it is the first Mexican horror talkie. The story is inspired by the legend of La Llorona, or the Wailing Woman. There are many variations of this tale, but the gist is that a woman murders her children in a rage (usually to spite an unfaithful husband or lover) and then is doomed to eternally mourn them. This legend has inspired several horror movies over the years, though this is the only one of them that I've seen.

La Llorona has some genuinely creepy moments. The sound of the titular ghost's cries are eerie and the lore behind the curse is fascinating. You can detect a lot of influence from Universal horrors like Paul Leni's The Cat and the Canary and Tod Browning's Dracula: the modern characters scoffing at the gothic horrors of the past, the house with secret passages, a cloaked criminal popping up undetected, etc. I also liked the film's connections to Mexican history, particularly to La Malinche and the conquistador period.

That being said, this is a movie where the parts are more satisfying than the whole. It's extremely slow-paced and not in a tense, slow-burn way. Some scenes go on way too long to no purpose, like when the camera lingers on kids stuffing their faces at Juan's birthday party. There are two major flashback sequences-- the first is fine because it occurs earlier in the movie and establishes the lore behind the family curse, but the second occurs so late in the game that it gives the movie the sense that it's stopping and starting, lurching along. That's the sequence that draws the connections to La Malinche, but its placement just feels awkward.

If you're a horror buff, this should definitely be on your radar. Its historical importance is immeasurable and even though it has its flaws, it still has some spooky scenes and an old-school gothic vibe I will never not love.

Dead of Night (dir. Alberto Cavalcanti, Charles Critchon, and Basil Dearden, 1945)

Architect Walter is invited to the country for a job. He encounters several other people in the country house-- and is surprised that he recognizes them all from a reoccurring nightmare he has-- a nightmare that happens to take place in that very country house. The other guests find this perfectly strange and end up sharing their own encounters with the supernatural and the unexplained.

This was another film I first heard about from Haunted Blowfish (both this movie and La Llorona were featured on his 100 Years of Horror series, which I highly recommend). It's an early example of a horror anthology with a particularly strong frame story. In fact, the frame story is the creepiest part of the whole movie, but more on that later.

All of the stories are really good, not a bad one in the lot. While the final tale with a killer dummy is the most celebrated, it wasn't my favorite. I loved the Christmas one, an understated little ghost story that reminded me a bit of The Innocents, and the mirror story, which actually creeped me out quite a bit. The mirror one involves a woman who buys her fiance an antique mirror, but anytime he looks into the glass, he sees a dark, sinister bedroom completely unlike the chamber he's standing in. It turns out the mirror has a sordid tragedy associated with it and the soul of the previous owner begins to overtake the woman's fiance until matters get deadly.

But the most chilling thing of all is the frame story, which takes on elements of ontological terror. I was genuinely surprised by the ending. If you haven't seen Dead of Night, I don't want to spoil it, but just know it gets really trippy, almost verging on science-fiction with its final twist.

Highly recommended!

PS I kept thinking to myself that the actor playing the architect in the frame story looked super familiar. It turns out he played Bob Cratchit in the Alastair Sim Christmas Carol!!

The Bird with the Crystal Plummage (dir. Dario Argento, 1970)

American writer Sam is vacationing in Italy with his British model girlfriend Julia when he witnesses a woman struggling with a mysterious man in black. The woman is stabbed and Sam is just able to contact the police in time to save her. However, the killer is still on the loose, striking down young, beautiful women. Sam and Julia aid the police in their investigation, only to become targets themselves.

I've been watching more giallo lately-- if you're unaware of what that is, the term refers to a cycle of Italian horror movies from the 60s and 70s that combined crime, Hitchcockian thrills, and exploitation elements into a stylish, dreamlike genre. Dario Argento is one of the giallo masters. I'd seen his Suspiria and his Phantom of the Opera (in which the Phantom is raised by telepathic rats... yes, that is a movie that exists, and a movie I enjoy enough to own on bluray, heaven help me). The Bird with the Crystal Plummage was Argento's directorial debut and it's a strong one at that.

This is a good example of what I think of as a "vibe movie." I wasn't too invested in the specifics of the mystery of the killer, but Sam and Julia are likable characters and there's a weird hangout vibe to the scenes where they're just going over theories and evidence in their messy apartment. Aesthetically, this is a great time capsule showing the transition of the late 60s into the 1970s. There's oddball humor scenes and some scary moments, like when Julia realizes the killer is outside her door and she does everything she can to keep herself secure. I was shouting at the screen during that scene, something I only do if a movie has me by the throat.

On a not that related note, it was weird for me to see Tony Musante as the hero. I'll always associate him with The Incident, a really tense 1967 thriller in which he plays one of the nastiest thugs in cinema history. Seeing him as a good guy is just surreal after he scarred me for life in that earlier movie.

Yeah no the time travel thing was kind of odd, but it did have to be like waaaay into the future. There is a comic run where Scott and Jean(!!!) go into the future to raise Nathan and it gets kind of crazy. That timeline always messes with me. I have no idea how canon it is as of right now but there’s also Rachel (who is Scott and Jeans /actual/ daughter) there. And Nathan splits into two I think? I’m still so foggy on that one.

AND THE CLONE THING. Because here’s the thing. Madelyn Pryor was the second clone Sinister made of Jean. The first one was the one is the one who actually died, and that’s Dark Phoenix. Jean herself was just in a coma I think? I could be wrong about this too. You’d think after the second time… though to be fair, it was a very rough time in Scott’s life. He has just left the X-Men because he couldn’t handle it anymore and there was just this pretty woman at the airport he went to who happened to look like Jean (once again, ew). I believe Sinister was the closest thing Scott had to a father figure and I don’t think he made the connection until much later. Sinister tended to wear different fake identities around a lot, and he was good enough at what he did to trick a 12(?) year old. While Scott knew Dr. Nathan Essex, he also knew whatever other fucked up costume Sinister put on. Nathan is named after both Sinister and Scott’s actual father, so it might be that? Or it could be a fucked up Albus Severus Potter moment again, which I wouldn’t put past marvel writers.

YEAH. No Charles is just really bad about loose ends I guess. He does this often and frequently. I’m on the Comic Charles Sucks train personally, I am his #3 hater behind my two friends. There’s also something to be said about Charles agreeing that mutants are the “superior race” and while he sees the signs, he doesn’t. View Sinister as a threat until Nathan is gone. At least I think, this could be wrong too. I hate this man. He fucks off to marry a space alien princess and all of the X-men think he’s dead. Scott and Jean (who desperately want to escape) have to take on the burden of the school and the team, and then Charles comes back when everything is falling apart deus ex machina style and goes “oh yeah. I just wanted you two to get a chance to retire haha” stupid bald old man I hate him

“Mr. Nearling-” He was hyperventilating, and Sarah grabbed one of his hands, “Mr. Nearling, I think you’re having an anxiety attack,” Dr. Reese let go of his hand, and hung her stethoscope back around her neck, and tapped on her iPad, “I’m going to give you something to calm you down, then we can talk about coping strategies and I will refer you to outpatient psychiatry to continue care. April, push 1.5 milligrams of Ativan.”

April pushed the medication through the patient’s IV line, and Dr. Reese pulled up a round, spinning stool to the bed and sat down. April nodded at the doctor, and left the room, pulling the curtain shut.

Mr. Nearling calmed down noticeably, which Dr. Reese took as a success - Panic attack subsided. Dr. Reese smiled, “It’s normal to have some residual physical symptoms, mild tightness, shortness of breath, but as the medication works you’ll calm down more and more. Have you ever had a panic attack before?”

Mr. Nearling shrugged, “Maybe? I’ve never gone to the hospital for it.”

“After a severe panic attack you may have more panic attacks in the coming days or weeks, so I’m going to call in a mild benzodiazepine in case you need a bit of help,” Dr. Reese typed that into the tablet, “When you feel the anxiety and panic start up, you definitely want to try coping mechanisms before you take medication for it. The medication is just for if those coping mechanisms don’t work, which sometimes happens and is to be expected every once in a while.”

Mr. Nearling nodded, taking a deep breath. It was shaky going out, but residual anxiety can do that.

“So, a good first step, whenever you’re having a panic attack, is to recognize that you’re having a panic attack. If it doesn’t work to say it in your head, say it out loud,” Dr. Reese tapped the tablet against her leg with each coming syllable for emphasis, “I am having a panic attack.”

“I am having a panic attack.”

And just like that, it was no longer a panic attack. Mr. Nearling went limp, and the monitors started going crazy. Dr. Reese held two fingers to the man’s neck, and yelled out, “I need a crash cart!”

Everything moved fast after that. Sarah was pushed out of the way by two ED doctors, who started barking out orders.

“He’s in cardiac arrest, page CT. Reese, get on his chest-”

Sarah could feel blood pounding in her ears, and she clasped one hand over the other and started humming. Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin’ alive. Stayin’ alive. Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin’ alive, stayin’ alive… No matter how much CPR she performed, she still needed the song to keep her on beat.

“-Milligram of Epi.”

Ah, ha, ha, ha…

“Hold compressions,” Dr. Choi barked, holding two fingers to the man’s neck, “Clear!”

The man’s chest lurched as he was shocked, and Sarah’s heart jumped into her throat. Dr. Choi held his fingers back to the man’s neck, “Another milligram of Epi. Charge to 200.”

Sarah resumed compressions. Ah, ha, ha, ha, stayin’...

“Clear!”

Sarah held her hands up, shaking. This never got easier.

“Asystole,” April sighed out, preparing another milligram of Epi. She knew exactly what Dr. Choi was going to ask for next.

“Another milligram of Epi.”

Sarah reached to resume compressions, but Dr. Choi swatted her hands out of the way and did CPR himself. Dr. Choi did it slightly faster than Sarah did. He knew the man was dead.

Sarah squeezed her clammy hands together, shaking like a leaf.

Dr. Bekker rushed in almost immediately after Dr. Choi stopped compressions, and was floored when Choi called time of death.

“Alright, why wasn’t this patient taken to the cath lab as soon as his heart attack was diagnosed?” Ava’s tone was stone cold.

Everyone looked at Sarah.

“He uh… He presented with…” She cleared her throat, “With shortness of breath, mild chest pain, cold sweat, shakiness, and extreme anxiety as well as a positive history for social anxiety. He did not-” She cracked her knuckles, “Um… He also displayed signs of work-related stress and no- Uh, no risk factors for heart attack. I determined he was having a panic attack and ordered 1.5 milligrams of Ativan and started talking about coping strategies with him.”

“Whenever a patient shows up with chest pains they should receive a FULL cardiac workup REGARDLESS of history and risk factors,” Dr. Bekker took a step towards Sarah, and grew louder, “If YOU were in the emergency room with CHEST PAIN, would you be anxious?!”

“I- uh-”

“You did NOTHING you should have. ANXIETY is NOT a contraindication for a heart attack, and now this man is dead. Leaving him to die in the waiting room would be more effective,” She spat out, her tone venomous, “Psych residents, I swear. God, isn’t anyone in this hospital competent?”

Sarah was out of the room before she even knew she was moving. Her feet dragged her away and her heart was practically leaping out of her chest. She felt tears welling up in her eyes and she started chewing on her tongue to avoid letting them go. She clenched her fists as Dr. Charles called her name.

“Dr. Reese! I was paged to the ED, something about you?”

“I need to use the bathroom,” She pushed past him, and he grabbed her arm.

“Sarah,” He whispered, “Go sit in my office when you’re done. I’m going to finish rounds. We’ll talk when I’m done,” He started to walk away, before turning around, “You’re not in trouble, Sarah, I just want to understand what happened.”

Sarah pushed open the swinging door to the women’s bathroom, bolted into the nearest stall and slammed the door shut. She sat down and started sobbing.

I’m in love with her.

She choked on her own snot, and ripped off a piece of toilet paper to blow her nose.

I’m in love with her, and she hates me.

She let out a wail.

i’m in love with her, she hates me, and I failed her.

The bathroom door opened.

“Sarah?”

Sarah held her breath, pulled her knees up to her chest to avoid making any noise.

“I don’t think she’s in here,” Sarah heard April, a gentle voice amongst the madness.

Sarah heard a pager beep.

“Ugh, I have a heart transplant. Whatever, send a note to Dr. Charles and let him know I was looking for her.”

She wants to yell at me some more. She wants to hurt me. She somehow knows about me and I’m going to get fired. I’m going to get fired and be all alone. She knows about me and she’s going to hurt me and I’m going to get fired.

They left, and Sarah let out her breath and let her feet fall to the floor. She blew her nose again, and took a deep, shaking breath. She stood up, and leaned her forehead against the stall door. She took her hair down from it’s low ponytail, and shook it out. She grabbed a piece of her hair and started absentmindedly braiding it - an old anxious habit.

A few minutes and three braids later, she opened the stall door and stared into the mirror in front of her. She wiped away her tears, approached the sink, and splashed water on her face, soaking one of her messy braids in the process. She dried with a thin paper towel, took another shaky, deep breath. She grabbed a helping of hand sanitizer on her way out of the bathroom. Force of habit. Even leaving her bedroom at home she sometimes tries to push the sanitizer button, even though it isn’t there.

Sarah practically ran to Dr. Charles’s office, hurriedly taking her braids out and running her hands through her tangled hair.

She unlocked Dr. Charles’s office door with her key, and closed the door behind her. She did not turn the lights on. Instead, she made a beeline for the couch. There was a throw blanket stored under one of the cushions, and she pulled it over her after grabbing it. She covered her face with a pillow, and screamed into it.

“Sarah?”

She forcefully uncovered her face, before relaxing once she saw it was just Daniel.

“Sarah,” He inquired, sitting down at his desk, “What happened today?”

Sarah sniffled, “I misdiagnosed a heart attack as a panic attack,” She choked out, “Mid-30s male presenting with shortness of breath, mild chest pain, cold sweat, anxiety, healthy weight, vegetarian, panicking with a history of social anxiety, currently experiencing work-related stress, no family history of heart disease, nothing.”

Dr. Charles sighed, “Common mistake. Hardly something to have a-”

“He died, Dr. Charles,” She cried, “He’s dead.”

Dr. Charles’s face hardened, “I see,” He faltered.

“And- And Ava, God, Ava…” She pressed her hand to her forehead, “She yelled at me in the middle of the ED, and she said I was incompetent and-” She choked out a sob, “She hates me.”

“She doesn’t hate you, Sarah,” Dr. Charles’s tone softened, “She’s just… She’s just angry. She won’t be angry forever.”

“I just really messed up today,” Sarah swiped her tears away with trembling hands.

“You did,” Dr. Charles agreed, “You did mess up today, but-”

“I’m going to get sued-”

“Sarah.”

“I’m going to lose my residency and I don’t have a fallback plan, I’m in so much debt and so much trouble-”

“Sarah, you’re not going to lose your residency,” Dr. Charles yelled, and Sarah fell silent. He took a deep breath, “I’m sorry for yelling at you, but you’re not going to lose your residency. Every single doctor has a misdiagnosis in their career, it’s just part of the job.”

“But he died. And it’s my fault.”

“Sarah, you are going to lose patients. And sometimes it’s going to be your fault,” He reasoned, “You’re a good doctor, Sarah, you’re a good doctor who made a mistake. You want to know what happened during my residency? I diagnosed a teenage girl experiencing vomiting and lack of appetite with bulimia,” He raised his eyebrows at Sarah, “She died of malnutrition. Autopsy showed she had ulcers all along her digestive tract,” He shrugged, “She was in too much pain to eat! But all I saw was a sickly thin teenage girl that was vomiting and couldn’t eat.”

Sarah stayed quiet.

“The point is, things happen. Death happens. Sometimes, conditions disguise as one another. Medicine is hardly ever an exact science,” Dr. Charles pointed out, “Human error is expected, you’re not going to get fired, and you’re probably not going to get sued. Mr. Nearling presented with no typical risk factors of a heart attack, and all the typical risk factors and symptoms of a panic attack. Did you purposefully ignore Mr. Nearling’s heart attack?”

Sarah shook her head.

“Boom,” Dr. Charles threw his hands up in front of him, “You had no malicious intent. You made a mistake, a common mistake, on a patient that didn’t present typically, and it had consequences.”

Sarah nodded.

Dr. Charles sighed, and looked at Sarah with a look of sympathy, “And now it will never happen again, right?”

She nodded.

“You’re going to take complaints with these symptoms more seriously?”

She nodded.

“You’re not a bad doctor, Sarah, you’re just a human,” He said, “In med school they always teach you what someone who has a heart attack looks like, just like they taught me what someone who has an eating disorder looks like. You just have to learn to get past that phenotype and look deeper.”

Sarah stayed quiet.

“Look... This is hard. I get it,” Dr. Charles sighed, “Just... go home, Sarah. Take a breather.”

“What?”

“Go home. Come back in a few days. Take a break.”

“Yes sir,” She said, quietly, before standing up to leave.

One of the best things about DuTP is that it prompts me to look up the historical figures we meet in the stories. The downside is that I end up racking my head trying to figure out when some events took place exactly (because I’m terrible with remembering dates and numbers) and how old are the characters at the time of the story and so on. Sometimes it’s very easy, sometimes it’s not.

Case in point: The Perfect Storm. I found a few interesting things and I want to share, just in case someone wanted to write a fic on it or just out of curiosity.

First of all, I’m almost sure it took place in 1720 and I’ll tell you why.

Rackam’s mutiny happened in 1718 and his death, clearly addressed in the story as a recent event, was in 1720. Coincidentally, Mary Read died in 1721 (in real history she was part of Rackam’s crew, along with Anne Bonny) after being involved in the same trial as Rackam, at 31 years-old.

This lets us understand how old is Charles Vane when we see him in TPS. He’s supposed to be in his late 30s (almost 40, actually) as the story is set the year before he was executed! Also, he has been a captain on his own for mere 5 years at that point, meaning he got to his fame in less than 3 years. His bragging to Cordelia is sort-of moot because she rose to fame way faster than he did, lol. On the other hand, the age gap is huge!

We know the average age of marriage for women in 1700 was around 19 years-old, but it could go up to 25 (or down to 12, since the law allowed it). If we assume Cordelia’s parents didn’t have a rush to marry her off/ were looking for a good party/ allowed her time to grow, we could say she is around 23-24 at the time of the story, it sounds reasonable given the times. It also means she really is a kid compared to Vane, lol. This doesn’t mean I won’t ship them, I still ship them, especially because in DuTP Vane looks 35 at most but I’m willing to pull down his age further because, hey, that’s just a story! Also, with Cordelia involved, just like it happened with Queen Marie’s good endings, his execution won’t happen.

Sort of same with Keats, although he isn’t based on a real person (he shares his surname with the poet and that’s about it), as far as I found. Estabilishing Keats’ exact age is a bit more complex because without a set schooling system in place at the time we can’t be sure when he finished his official studies, plus, even if we knew, we aren’t given enough info on how much time passed between his graduation and the moment he decided to prove himself to the Royal Society through field research. Let’s say he’s in his late 20s/early 30s.

There existed an Admiral Hawke, actually two, in the British Army’s history, but both younger than Vane, one born in 1705 and another in 1726, so neither could have been his father, (although we can suspect of a brother with the same name? idk). The Admiral of the Royal Fleet from 1718 to 1733 was George Byng, in case you were wondering.

Thomas de Vere, as far as I found, was created specifically for the game’s plot. Same with Governor Hamilton (apparently there was never a governor named Hamilton in Jamaica). That, unless I didn’t look in the right places in my quick search, in which case I’ll be happy to be corrected.

In any case, those three (Hawke, de Vere and Hamilton) may be inspired by other historical figures but didn’t exist irl.

Anyway, since DuTP story world isn’t quite the same as ours, that it was estabilished ever since Queen Marie that the MC can and does change history and that some characters are different from their real life counterparts (in this case, to say one, Read has the same backstory up to a certain point, but was never in Rackam’s crew nor is pregnant during her adventures with us and actually seems to be still in mourning of her late husband and not have another lover, nor she knows personally Anne Bonny here), we can alter and play with ages and history as much as we want.

TL,DR: The Perfect Storm is likely set in 1720, where Read is 30 y-o, Vane is 40 y-o, Keats around 30-something, Cordelia is any age between 12 and 25 but most likely around 24. Governor Hamilton, Thomas de Vere and Admiral Hawke may be based on historical figures but not of that time/area and are more likely just characters.

Oh my.

Henry and Ellie are horrified at their father's actions, with Galeforce trying to justify his decision as it being " for the good of everyone" and telling the two that after the Toppats would be defeated then he would bring them back their brother.

Henry and Ellie don't buy this, with Ellie headed to the Wall to talk to Dmitri about this and leaving Henry to stay and try to figure something out.

Since Henry isn't the best fighter or runner here in the Triple Triplet AU, he just has to hang on tight and try to jog Charles' and Right's memories the best he can without Galeforce or Dr V knowing.

Dmitri would be thoroughly pissed here and send the Wall to attack, maybe even making a temporary alliance with the Toppats to stop Galeforce and save Right and Charles.

The rescue attempt is easier said then done, with Green and Charlie following orders to protect the Government and attack the intruders, giving the Government a quick upper hand.

And then both Henry and Ellie stand infront of Charlie, with Reginald standing infront of Green in one desperate bid to free those close to them, no one moving an inch and knowing full well that they could easily be killed.

But Henry, Ellie and Reginald will stay their ground to save Charles and Right, already forgiving them for their actions beyond their own control and only hoping their plan works.

From Anj taking her life experiences and things people said about Beth to Candice having to fight every damn day for a black woman to be treated as more than a diversity hire for Iris to Anna having to deal with all the comments that called her and Kory hookers to Azie having to write her own episode that reflects Kelly’s struggles, my sisters have been disrespected from day one and I’m proud of them and their fans for not taking fanboys shit and standing up and defending both the actresses and characters.

The way Beth and Rick’s journeys during the episode are about identity? Beth’s started with her doubting her place in the world and in the JSA and ended with her wearing all those nasty thing Eclipso said about her (wrong gender, wrong colour) with pride while Rick started out knowing that while people expect the worst from him, he at least had the heart to forgive and even try to befriend Grundy, he had his father’s hourglass which on some level meant he had a good heart only for his security in his identity to be taken away and revealed by Eclipso.

Self acceptance and identity was the theme for Hournite in 2x08 and I love it.

Seeing a new, more confident Beth is definitely something I cannot wait for because while she didn’t need it, she got the seal of approval from not Chuck, but Charles McNider who didn’t spend months with her but saw her strength and determination and heart. Dr McNider and the JSA database acknowledging her as Dr Midnite was just the icing on top for someone who is now confident in HERSELF and her abilities and place on the team.

Rick having to go through a more outward fight against his emotions and the situation around him was devastating but I’m here for watching him pick himself to be a hero again. Rick was chosen to join the JSA due to something that worked just because he had the right DNA. Him coming back to the JSA will be about HIM accepting that the title and worthiness didn’t come from the hourglass but from his heart (and sheer bullheadedness)

Every time Beth Chapel and Rick Tyler get an episode, it’s always about them both because their stories run parallel to each other. Dr Midnite recruited Hourman by giving him peace over the mystery surrounding his parents passing the same way Rick Tyler always has Beth Chapel’s back

I think going forward Rick will use his apparent talent in chemistry to figure out how to replicate his fathers hourglass as Beth finds out how to stop Eclipso for good and how to get Dr McNider out using her goggles.
