I say this with nothing but support and respect for you. I love that you don’t share your crochet patterns. It’s inspiring to me to make more patterns myself. Though also it feels delightfully evil. Like you’re the team rocket of Pokemon amigurumi and no one else can have your treasured Pokemon. That being said have you had any you really struggled with bringing to life/still are?
That is a weird perspective. I don't understand why, even jokingly, you have categorized my not sharing patterns as any kind of evil. There's a lot of casual entitlement about crocheting and art in general and crafts especially that honestly irritates me.
This could be a really long post because I have a lot of feelings about it but I'll keep it short. I don't understand why the default should be that I spend my unpaid time and effort on putting out some kind of patterns or tutorials for my hobby, just so people can add to their list of hundreds of projects they'll never do. I am already doing something incredible in that I share the art I make that people apparently enjoy, and while I think it would be harder for others than it is for me to just look at a picture and make it, I am not robbing anyone of the ability to do so.
#text#dpc asks#y'all are so tiring for real#i think everyone who talks to me about my patterns at this point owes me $1000#like legitimately i could write an essay about how annoying it is by now

Trouble in paradise? Haha, yes :D
Dirk and Tiana are still together. You can say things are... fine. Yes, that bland. Both are extremely busy and independent, so after their initial excitement about being official ended, they barely see each other since they have projects that require their attention: Dirk is creating his own techie emporium, while Tiana was busy graduating an planning a formal bussiness.
This time, Dirk promised Tia to help her with her moving and, in the end, something came up and she ended up alone... again. Oh well, I guess that's their regular dynamic at this point.

here to educate on the "miraculous ladybug" plurality, and in turn, ask your opinion (on my interpretation of it). i know thats long winded but i hope you get what i mean! anyway.
the argument for Marinette DPC being plural is that, when you wear the miraculous' magic jewels, you are tethers to the past lives of those who have worn the jewels before her. She has is able to use a secondary magic jewel, called a kwaga-tama, which when used, can allow her to speak to these past lives.
Marinette is the ONLY human character who can see the past lives, but this isn't like a pre-recorded video or a hologram. this is her having an active dialogue with the previous ladybug miraculous holder, and the previous miraculous holder is able to make commentary on the modern world and how different it is. they have different opinions but in the end, are connected. how could this be interpreted in regard to plurality?
secondary argument: when using the magic jewels, for lack of a better term, marinette actively fuses with her magical being, called a Kwami, and together they become ladybug. Marinette's kwami is named Tikki. Tikki is actively able to see, hear, and at VERY SPECIFIC TIMES, influence marinettes actions as ladybug. they are two beings, who fuse together to be one being. one gives the other powers. its symbiotic. but how could it be viewed in a plural aspect? theres a LOT to explore here, especially with the fact that theres magic and aliens involved, and fucking time travel! so things get VERY very messy. but the theorizing abilities are so interesting here!
Fascinating!
The past life mechanics sound kind of similar to how I've heard of the Vestiges in My Hero Academia work, in how they're tied to the power as it passes from person to person.
I looked a bit further into this too, and found this bit from the wiki interesting:
It should be noted that the summoned spirit is not the real previous holder, only a manifestation of their memories as a Miraculous holder, and therefore will only have the memories from their time as a Miraculous holder and know nothing of their lives from after they renounced their Miraculous. The spirit is also unable to interact with the physical world.
So basically, it's not really even their soul. It's more like a magical introject copied from them.
That's really cool and seems even more plural than if they had just been summoning the spirits of the dead!
It's also cool to learn that there are occasions where the Kwamis can influence the actions of their holders.
Thanks for this addition! It was really interesting to learn. I should try this series someday when I have the time!

Ireland's privacy regulator is a gamekeeper-turned-poacher

This Saturday (May 20), I’ll be at the GAITHERSBURG Book Festival with my novel Red Team Blues; then on May 22, I’m keynoting Public Knowledge’s Emerging Tech conference in DC.
On May 23, I’ll be in TORONTO for a book launch that’s part of WEPFest, a benefit for the West End Phoenix, onstage with Dave Bidini (The Rheostatics), Ron Diebert (Citizen Lab) and the whistleblower Dr Nancy Olivieri.
When the EU passed its landmark General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), it seemed like a privacy miracle. Despite the most aggressive lobbying Europe had ever seen, 500 million Europeans were now guaranteed a digital private life. Could this really be?
If you’d like an essay-formatted version of this post to read or share, here’s a link to it on pluralistic.net, my surveillance-free, ad-free, tracker-free blog:
https://pluralistic.net/2023/05/15/finnegans-snooze/#dirty-old-town
Well, yes…and no. Despite flaws (Right to Be Forgotten), the GDPR has strong, well-crafted, badly needed privacy protections. But to get those protections, Europeans need their privacy regulators to enforce the rules.
That’s where the GDPR miracle founders. Europe includes several tax-havens — Malta, Cyprus, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Ireland — that compete to offer the most favorable terms to international corporations and other criminals. For these havens, paying little to no tax is just table-stakes. As these countries vie to sell themselves out to giant companies, they compete to offer a favorable regulatory environment, insulating companies from lawsuits over corruption, labor abuses and other crimes.
All of this is made possible — and even encouraged — by the design of European federalism, which lets companies easily shift which flag of convenience they fly. Once a company re-homes in a country, it can force Europeans across the union to seek justice in that country’s courts, under the looming threat that the company will up sticks for another haven if the law doesn’t bend over backwards to protect corporate citizens from the grievances of flesh-and-blood humans.
Big Tech’s most aggressive privacy invaders have long flown Irish flags. Ireland is “headquarters” to Google, Meta, Tinder, Apple, Airbnb, Yahoo and many other tech companies. In exchange for locating a handful of jobs to Ireland, these companies are allowed to maintain the pretense that their global earnings are afloat in the Irish Sea, in a state of perfect, untaxable grace.
That cozy relationship meant that the US tech giants were well-situated to sabotage Ireland’s privacy regulator, who would be the first port of call for Europeans whose privacy had been violated by American firms. For many years, it’s been obvious that the Irish Data Protection Commission was a sleeping watchdog, with infinite tolerance for the companies that pretend to make Ireland their homes. 87% of Irish data protection claims involve just eight giant US companies (that pretend to be Irish).
But among for hardened GDPR warriors, the real extent of the Data Protection Commissioner’s uselessness is genuinely shocking. A new report from the Irish Council for Civil Liberties reveals that the DPC isn’t merely tolerant of privacy crimes, they’re gamekeepers turned poachers, active collaborators in privacy abuse:
https://www.iccl.ie/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/5-years-GDPR-crisis.pdf
The report’s headline figure really tells the story: the European Data Protection Board — which oversees Ireland’s DPC — overturns the Irish regulator’s judgments 75% of the time. It’s actually worse than it appears: that figure only includes appeals of the DPC’s enforcement actions, where the DPC bestirred itself to put on trousers and show up for work to investigate a privacy claim, only to find that the corporation was utterly blameless.
But the DPC almost never takes enforcement actions. Instead, the regulator remains in its pajamas, watching cartoons and eating breakfast cereal, and offers an “amicable resolution” (that is, a settlement) to the accused company. 83% of the cases brought before the DPC are settled with an “amicable resolution.”
Corporations can bargain for multiple, consecutive amicable resolutions, allowing them to repeatedly break the law and treat the fines — which they negotiate themselves — as part of the price of doing business.
This is illegal. European law demands that cases that involve repeat offenders, or that are likely to affect many people, must be fully investigated.
Ireland’s government has stonewalled on calls for an independent review of the DPC. The DPC continues to abet lawlessness, allowing corporations to use privacy invasive techniques for surveillance, discrimination and manipulation. In 2022, the DPC concluded 64% of its cases with mere reprimands — not even a slap on the wrist.
Meanwhile, the DPC trails the EU in issuing “compliance orders” — which directly regulate the conduct of privacy-invading companies — only issuing 49 such orders in the past 4.5 years. The DPC has only issues 28 of the GDPR’s “one-stop-shop” fines.
The EU has 26 other national privacy regulators, but under the GDPR, they aren’t allowed to act until the DPC delivers its draft decisions. The DPC is lavishly funded, with a budget in the EU’s top five, but all that money gets pissed up against a wall, with inaction ruling the day.
Despite the collusion between the tech giants and the Irish state, time is running out for America’s surveillance-crazed tech monopolists. The GDPR does allow Europeans to challenge the DPR’s do-nothing rulings in European court, after a long, meandering process. That process is finally bearing fruit: in 2021, Johnny Ryan and the Irish Council for Civil Liberties brought a case in Germany against the ad-tech lobby group IAB:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/06/16/inside-the-clock-tower/#inference
And the activist Max Schrems and the group NOYB brought a case against Google in Austria:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/05/15/out-here-everything-hurts/#noyb
But Europeans should not have to drag tech giants out of Ireland to get justice. It’s long past time for the EU to force Ireland to clean up its act. The EU Commission is set to publish a proposal on how to reform Ireland’s DPA, but more muscular action is needed. In the new report, the Irish Council For Civil Liberties calls on the European Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, to treat this issue with the urgency and seriousness that it warrants. As the ICCL says, “the EU can not be a regulatory superpower unless it enforces its own laws.”

Catch me on tour with Red Team Blues in Toronto, DC, Gaithersburg, Oxford, Hay, Manchester, Nottingham, London, and Berlin!

Ask inspired by your post about all the hidden details and interactive parts on your crochets... do you think it would be possible to record video clips of some of these details? Rotating the crochets and moving any of the dynamic elements like wheels and such? I think it could be fun to see them in motion even if we can't physically hold them! Your eiscue is one of my fav crochets of all time due to the attention you put in to the head. ^^
Good ask! It's on my list of things I will possibly do but not a priority.
I am averse to taking videos of my crochets because I hate how for me the bare minimum video would be something like the Duskull one, which even though the video itself is 15 seconds long, I spent much longer taking the video itself, removing the audio, rendering it, uploading it. That's a lot of dumb work I don't like to do, and it would take even longer if I did that for even just my fun crochets because of how I'd be showing off the really cool details.
I do think it'd be fun for y'all to see, but using Eiscue as a specific example, it would take more time and editing than I care to do for a 30 second max video. Eiscue's ice cube head comes off yeah, but it's not cleanly and prettily, takes a bit of smushing because of the snug fit, and then I got to fish the little hair back up out through the stitches to show up top. I don't really want to take a video showing me struggling with all that, and I don't really want to edit those parts of video out because that's kind of the point of the video to show those details. Idk it just wouldn't be as fun to do for a little clip as it would be in real life if I were the one having to film and edit it.
#dpc asks#i actually kind of.. not hate. but every time i watch an 'art process/showcase' video i always get a little uncomfortable feeling realizing#how much time was spent on doing stuff like. positioning the camera or phone. did they get a real camera for that.#getting the lighting right. finding the little background music.#editing in any transitions or subtitles or visual effects. how much time itll physically take to render then upload. rip my internet speed.#and then all that for a minute of actual video length. for 100 views if they're lucky.#i am not built for that. not for free and not for fun.#if i had a guzillion dollar i would hire someone to do all that lol

Intel VTune Profiler: Improve AI/ML Application Performance

Improve AI/ML Application Performance with Intel VTune Profiler.
Find out how to profile Data Parallel Python and OpenVINO workloads using the oneAPI-powered tool. The use of AI and ML is rising in healthcare and life sciences, marketing and finance, manufacturing, robotics, driverless automobiles, smart cities, and more. ML workloads in real-world fields employ deep learning frameworks like PyTorch, TensorFlow, Keras, and others.
Through the “write once, deploy anywhere” approach, other developer tools, such as the OpenVINO Toolkit, also help to expedite AI research on the newest hardware architectures in fields like computer vision and generative artificial intelligence (GenAI). The goal of the open source OpenVINO Toolkit, which was first released in 2018, has been to speed up AI inference with reduced latency and increased throughput while preserving accuracy, minimizing model footprint, and maximizing hardware utilization.
It is challenging to locate and examine performance bottlenecks in the underlying source code because to the intricate structure of deep learning models, which include numerous layers and non-linear functions. ML frameworks like PyTorch and TensorFlow provide native tools and profiling APIs for tracking and evaluating performance metrics at various phases of model construction.
These approaches, however, are only applicable to software functionality. This problem is addressed by the Intel VTune Profiler, which is driven by the oneAPI and offers comprehensive insights into hardware-level memory and compute bottlenecks. By doing this, performance problems are resolved and AI applications’ performance is optimized and scaled across hardware systems with different computational envelopes.
The scope of optimization for AI/ML workloads may be expanded by using Intel VTune Profiler to profile data in concurrent Python and OpenVINO programs, as you will discover in this article.
Use Intel VTune Profiler to Boost Python Application Performance
VTune Profiler may assist in profiling a Python program, as shown in a recently published recipe in the Intel VTune Profiler Cookbook.
The following are the recipe’s fundamental software requirements:
Data Parallel Extensions for Python
Vtune Profiler (version 2022 or later)
Intel Distribution for Python
Compiler for Intel OneAPI DPC++/C++
The NumPy implementation covered in the recipe divides the calculations into logical jobs using the Intel Instrumentation and Tracing Technology (ITT) APIs and performs distance computations using the Intel oneAPI Math Kernel Library (oneMKL) routines. You may then determine which areas of the code need attention for necessary changes to get additional performance by using the VTune Profiler tool to examine the execution time and memory consumption of each logical job.
Details on the most CPU-intensive code segments are included in the output analysis report when Hotspots analysis is performed on the NumPy implementation. Additionally, it offers recommendations for investigating the profiler tool’s other performance analysis features, such Threading analysis for enhanced parallelism and Microarchitecture Exploration analysis for effective use of the underlying hardware.
Use the Data Parallel Extension for NumPy and Numba to Address Performance Bottlenecks
According to the Hotspots analysis report, NumPy operations and underlying oneMKL functions account for a significant amount of the execution time in the simple NumPy implementation of the pairwise distance computation example. By making little code modifications, NumPy may be swapped out for the Data Parallel Extension for NumPy, which will eliminate these bottlenecks. To evaluate the speed gains over the simple NumPy code and find any areas that might need further optimization, run the Hotspots analysis once again.
Additionally, the VTune Profiler makes recommendations such as using the Data Parallel Extension for Numba with your platform’s GPU to bring offload accelerator parallelism to the application. The Numba JIT compiler for NumPy operations has an open-source extension called Numba. It offers Python kernel programming APIs that resemble SYCL. The GPU Compute/Media Hotspots analysis preview function of VTune Profiler may then be used to examine the Numba implementation’s execution on a GPU.
Use Intel VTune Profiler to Examine OpenVINO Applications’ Performance
Using the VTune Profiler to profile OpenVINO-based AI applications is covered in another new recipe in the VTune Profiler cookbook. It discusses how to use the profiler tool to analyze performance bottlenecks in the CPU, GPU, and Neural Processing Unit (NPU).
If your OpenVINO application makes use of the Intel oneAPI Data Analytics Library (oneDAL) and/or the Intel oneAPI Deep Neural Network (oneDNN) Intel Distribution for Python Intel VTune Profiler (v2024.1 or later), you can access the Benchmark Tool application as part of the OpenVINO Toolkit Intel oneAPI Base Toolkit.
The recipe offers detailed steps for configuring OpenVINO with the ITT APIs for performance analysis, building the OpenVINO source, and setting it up. It profiles the AI application and analyzes performance and latency using a reference benchmark application.
Depending on the computational architecture, you may use the VTune Profiler‘s numerous performance analysis features to find hotspots and look at how much hardware is being utilized by specific code sections.
For example,
To examine CPU bottlenecks that is, the sections of code that take up the most CPU execution time use the Hotspots Analysis tool.
Use the GPU Compute/Media Hotspots Analysis preview function to profile GPU hotspots. Examine inefficient kernel methods, examine the frequency of GPU instructions for various kinds of instructions, and more to get an understanding of GPU use.
The AI PCs’ Neural Processing Units (NPUs) are made especially to boost AI/ML applications’ performance. With the Intel Distribution of OpenVINO Toolkit, you may transfer compute-intensive AI/ML tasks to Intel NPUs. You may examine the NPU performance using a number of hardware measures, including workload size, execution time, sampling interval, and more, with the use of the VTune Profiler‘s NPU Exploration Analysis preview function.
