i fell asleep at 4 and was woken up by my dad at 9. we stopped at mcdonalds and got egg mcmuffins. we arrived at bob and deirdre's and i pet their cat stimpy. we went to the state fair. i got a kabob and dad got elote. we walked through some buildings and saw some cool art. we watched some horse races and dog stunts. i got a yummy chocolate milkshake, but it was more like a frosty. blue rode the sky lift and when i waved at him he honked his nose at me. there was a guy with a camera for wthr so dad and i were probably on tv! we pet some huge horses and i felt bad for a little while but felt good again soon after. there was also a lot of other animals too. [...?] we went into a building and a couple tried to sell us beds. we rode the trailer trolley thing. we ate dinner (i had bacon mac and cheese, dad had loaded tater tots, and bob and deirdre had HUGE porkchop sandwiches. we talked to a nice lady who worked at gobble gobble [the turkey stand] and then we went into a building and saw fish and pelts. we walked through the butterfly garden. i went into the parakeet experience and had SO much fun!!! it was the most memorable part of the whole day!!! at one point i had four birds on my head! one of the pooped on me lol. we got an elephant ear and listened to some live music. not sure who the performers were. we got a delicious handmade pretzel and rode the trolley again. we all went back to the car but then dad and i went back for more cherry limeade and a picture of the midway sign i had a great time!!! i wish i couldve ridden the double decker carousel, the sky lift, and eaten more food. my legs really hurt but thats ok

Some caravan migrants hitch rides on flatbed trucks
By Maria Sacchetti, Washington Post, November 6, 2018
CORDOBA, Mexico--The double-decker truck lurched to a stop on a dusty roadside, where hundreds of caravan migrants attempted to hitch a ride north in their quest to reach the United States.
Roughly 300 scrambled aboard--mothers pushing babies in strollers alongside skinny teenagers traveling alone. They slipped their fingers through the metal grates and hung on as the engine sputtered to life.
“Let’s take care of the women and children,” said Alberto Mendoza, an organizer with Pueblo Sin Fronteras, an advocacy group that is aiding the migrants.
The group of 4,000 to 5,000 mostly Hondurans was making its way toward Mexico City to reconvene in a sprawling sports complex where they could get food, shelter, medical care and even therapy as they figured out where to go next.
For many, the last leg of the trip had been treacherous. Organizers had begged Mexican officials for buses to transport the caravan, but the journey had instead consisted of harrowing rides, with migrants gasping for air inside box trucks, clinging to the sides of tractor trailers or dangling off flatbed trucks. And Mexico City is still hundreds of miles from the U.S. border, the final destination for many of the migrants.
Activists say they are worried about migrants getting injured or falling ill. In Chiapas, a 25-year-old man died when he fell off a truck, according to the state prosecutor’s office. They also feared for their safety in Veracruz, a state notorious for kidnappings, organized crime and mass graves, including one found in recent weeks with 160 skulls.
“In many of those graves are migrants,” said human rights activist Andres Torres, who was aiding the caravan.
On Monday, the migrants had been trying to hitch rides since dawn from the city of Cordoba and blocked the highway north to force trucks to pick them up. But police ordered them to walk 2 ½ miles to a toll station where they could board more safely.
Asked why they allowed them to take precarious rides, a federal police officer threw up his hands.
“We can’t stop them,” he said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.
The double-decker truck, used to haul cars, marked one of the riskier trips--a rattling, jangling heap of metal with large gaps in the floorboards to the highway below. The trailer was enclosed on the sides but had an open roof, making it easier to breathe. But it was meant to carry heavier cargo, and each bump in the road shook the truck--and its passengers--violently.
The truck left around 9:30 a.m. on a 116-mile trip from Cordoba to the city of Puebla.
As the trailer picked up speed, candy wrappers flew into the air. Clouds of exhaust rose from the undercarriage. The black asphalt rushed underneath like a river.
On the top deck, young men whistled and waved at passing trucks that honked in return, as they held on and chewed gum to avoid getting sick.
But on the lower deck, just inches above the highway, families were sleepy and tense.
Two women stuffed toilet paper into their ears to block the roar of traffic. Legs from the top deck dangled over them. Parents clutching squirmy toddlers kept nodding off and then jerking awake.
“Don’t sleep,” Nora, a 35-year-old woman from Honduras, warned her husband, Wilmer, 38, as he held their daughter Estefani, a girl in a pink jumper who turned 2 that day.
It was not the life Nora had imagined for her family, her sweater stained with oil from the dangerous rides. She had barely slept in the weeks since fleeing Honduras.
“Yes, this scares me. Any kind of accident can happen to you,” she said. “Either I take the risk, or I stay poor.”
For three hours, they held on. Babies shrieked. The trailer hissed and rattled.
A toddler sitting in a stroller on the lower deck dropped a blue toy robot and reached for it, and a crowd around stopped him, fearing he would fall through the gap. Gingerly, they picked it up and gave it back.
As they drew closer to Mexico City, the air cooled, and the sunburned migrants pressed together to keep warm.
“It’s bad. I’m really worried,” said Kenia Hernandez, a 26-year-old single mother from Colon, Honduras. “On this road, you do what you have to do.”
Beside her sat Livis Murillo, 25, a stranger from Copan, Honduras, who became a friend in the hours they sat together. Hernandez clutched her 2-year-old daughter, Genesis, dressed in a Minnie Mouse jumper and dirty pink tights.
Murillo held the girl’s white shoes and her teddy bear.
“I don’t mind helping,” he said. “They’re all tired.”
Some truck drivers charged 100 pesos, or about $5, for the journey, migrants said. But for most, the ride was free, a sign of support, said Walter Cuello, who helped organize the caravan in Honduras.
Finally, just before 1 p.m., the truck stopped, and migrants rose stiffly and filtered out. They were in Puebla, far from their destination in Mexico City, more than 80 miles away.
From there, those headed to the United States would have an even longer journey, since they remained hundreds of miles from the border.
Lenin Marroquin, 29, from Ceiba, Honduras, jumped off the trailer and stretched in the breakdown lane, then joined the group flowing north to find the next ride.
“It was rough,” he said of the trip. “But we have to finish it.”

Arplis - News: Mount Hope Hopscotch
Church Cove offers a protected anchorage in a southwest breeze. Photo Cate Brown
Overlooked by many boaters, Mount Hope Bay offers a host of attractive spots in which to wile away a dayor weekon the water. By Capt. Dave Bill; Photography by Cate Brown
Mount Hope Bay, shared by Massachusetts and Rhode Island, doesnt get a lot of attention from boaters. But it should. The bay is filled with interesting places to dock, drop an anchor or explore in a small boat, so you could fill an entire week visiting a new spot every day.
Every summer, I spend a significant amount of time on the bay aboard a 36-foot Union cutter, so Ive gotten to know and love this body of water, which offers everything from interesting things to see and do to great dock-and-dine restaurants to scenic spots where one can drop the hook and take a dip. Here are some of my favorite places to visit, as well as some points of interest.
The main gateway to Mount Hope Bay (which is named after a small hill on its western shore) is via the center span of the Mount Hope Bridge, with Hog Island Shoal to port and Musselbed Shoals to starboard. You can also enter, from the north, via the Taunton River, and from the south, via the Sakonnet River. Although the Army Corps of Engineers maintains a 35-foot-deep shipping channel through the bay up to Fall River, be mindful of navigational aids that mark obstructions such as Spar Island or Old Bay Rock. If sailing, youll also need to plan your itinerary around the strong tidal currents.

FALL RIVIERA
The city of Fall River, once a thriving textile center, often gets a bad rap, but it offers a treasure trove of things to do and see. One if the main attractions is Battleship Cove, home to the worlds largest collection of World War II naval vessels, including the battleship Massachusetts and the attack submarine USS Lionfish. Reserve a mooring through the harbormasters office and you can spend the night in the shadow of these historic warships.
If you wish to explore downtown Fall River, you can tie up at the public dinghy dock on the south end of Battleship Cove. If traveling with small children, dont miss a ride on the 1920-built Fall River Carousel. You can also stroll along the waterfront boardwalk through Fall River Heritage State Park or take in a show at the Narrows Center for the Arts, a premier destination for the visual and performing arts.
Few people realize that Fall River was an important stop on the Fall River Line, a combination steamboat and railroad route between New York City and Boston from 1847 to 1937. The steamboats of the FRL were some of the most advanced and luxurious of the day, and you can learn more about this era at the Marine Museum and Visitors Center in Heritage State Park.

DOCK & DINES
Mount Hope Bay also has a couple of dock-and- dine options worth checking out. My favorites are The Cove in Fall River and The Boathouse in Tiverton. Both offer transient dockage, plus some pretty good food. Its best to call ahead at The Cove to arrange a space, but its first come, first-served at The Boathouses pier.
If youre in the mood for a party atmosphere, take a funky detour into Borden Light Marina, directly east of Borden Flats Lighthouse. The marina always has a few slips available for transients or free dockage for daytrippers on either side of the Tipsy Seagull, the marinas double-decker floating pub and restaurant. Take in the sunset while sipping a Tipsy Sunset and enjoying a Seagull Stuffy appetizer. You can also take the gratis Tipsy Taxi, a 1972 four-door Cadillac convertible, to visit downtown Fall River. In late August, Borden Light Marina plays host to the Fall River Grand Prix, New Englands only offshore powerboat race. Contestants compete for $35,000 in prize money on a 2 1/2 -mile course on the bay and lower Taunton River.

RENT-A-LIGHT
Approaching the Braga Bridge, which connects Fall River to the town of Somerset, youll notice the white-and-red, 47-foot tower of Borden Flats Light, which marks Borden Flats shoal. Built in 1881, the light is now privately owned and available for overnight stays. Renters can take a water taxi from Borden Light Marina to access the light.
Breathtaking Mount Hope Farm borders Church Cove, on the bays western shore. I regularly anchor in the protected 9-foot hole between Seal Rock and Mount Hope Point. Although there is no public landing on the cove, you can beach a kayak or dinghy along its shore and explore the property. On the north shore of the cove is Cove Cabin, one of the propertys function venues, available to the public for rent.
The farm offers lovely walking trails, a Saturday morning farmers market, gardens, a beautiful bed-and-breakfast and more. History buffs take note that the farm occupies the spiritual grounds of Metacomets Pokanoket tribe. The scenic cove deserves exploration in a kayak or dinghy, and is a great spot to cast for stripers, but larger boats should be careful of the many hidden rocks therein.
THREE RIVERS
The Kickemuit River, in the northwest corner of the bay, is one of my favorite gunkholes, and makes a fine anchorage in any weather. When entering the river, mind the channel markers carefully. Once through Bristol Narrows, the river opens into an expansive area. The center is deepest, with shallow water on all sides, and you can usually find plenty of room to drop the hook.
In the north end of the bay, on either side of Gardiners Neck, are the Cole and Lee Rivers. The Cole is my favorite of the two, with a nice day- anchoring area just off Ocean Grove Beach. You can explore further past the small entrance at the sand spit in a kayak or shoal-draft dinghy. The neighboring Lee River is less attractive than the Cole, plus it lacks a protected anchorage. Still, the upriver areas offer some interesting paddling opportunities.

New 24-Hour Running Festival Announced
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
The team behind the award-winning Equinox24 event, held at Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire, are delighted to announce the launch of a second event for 2020 - Solstice24.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Held on 27th through to 28th June 2020, Solstice24 will be hosted at the same iconic venue as its ‘sister-event’ Equinox24 and will follow the same popular concept, but at the same time welcoming a few distinct changes to set it apart as a new event in its own right. A brand new 10km route will take in hidden parts of the Castle grounds, sculptures, waterfalls, and breath-taking views. The iconic view of Belvoir Castle overlooking the course, lit up throughout the night, will certainly be a highlight of the event for runners and their spectators.
Johnny Nicol, Race Director of Solstice24 says,
‘We are so excited to finally add another race to partner Equinox24. The amazing new run course and the different time of year will give the event a very different feel and a new run experience to Equinox24 but with the same great atmosphere, organisation and venue. With Equinox24 selling out now for two years in a row, it also gives people another chance to race at the fabulous Belvoir Castle, which really is a special place to run. We can't wait for June!’
Solstice24 invites runners to take on as many run laps as possible in 24 hours. Runners can take it on as a solo effort (with solo runners covering distances between 10 and 210km) or share the fun with friends, and run as part of a relay team with between two and eight runners.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
The weekend has a fun ‘festival feel’ with camping available within the grounds of the stunning Belvoir Castle, a light-hearted “Beer Run”, live music and a family-focused Kids Fun Run amongst others.
Keeping runners and their spectators well-fed for the weekend sits high on the organiser’s priorities too. There will be a selection of handpicked quality food stalls on site giving ample options for every meal time; including Stewarts Coffee and Route 14, a double decker licensed bar, with the event village a great place to hang out, enjoy some food and soak up the atmosphere of the event.
The location, great course and festival atmosphere is what will set this run apart and it is sure to become a firm favourite amongst trail, ultra, long distance and social runners. Solstice24 looks set to be more than just ‘another race’ – it will be a running weekend to remember.
Entries are now OPEN and with numbers for the Equinox24 event hitting nearly 3000, with most categories a sell-out, this new event is sure to be a hit, with organisers expecting it to be a popular choice amongst runners across the country.

In addition, third-party logistics service providers are enhancing their trailer feet, due to rise in demand for refrigerated trailers.
A semi-trailer is a trailer lacking a front axle. It is equipped with landing gear to support it when it is uncoupled. Many semi-trailers have wheels which are capable of being totally dismounted and are also re-locatable to better distribute load to bearing wheel weight factors. Semi-trailers with trailer devices are referred to as B-doubles or tandem tractor trailers, tandem rigs, or doubles. They are several types for designing to haul different cargoes for instance car carrier trailers, bus-bodied trailers, drop-deck trailers, box or van trailers, conestoga trailers, dry bulk, curtain siders and others (double deckers, flatbeds, live bottom trailers).
Based on type, semi-trailer market is segmented into lowboysemi-trailer, flatbedsemi-trailer, refrigeratedsemi-trailer, dry vansemi-trailer and tanker. The dry van segment lead the market owing to its widespread utilization in countries that witness substantial demand for semi-trailer, such as the U.S.Based on tonnage type, market is segmented into below 25 ton, 25 to 50 ton, 51 to 100 ton and above 100 ton. 25 to 50 ton is an exceedingly attractive segment due to adequate capacity of the trailers to carry freight or cargo. Greetings, I hope you all had a happy Labor Day. As a kid I remember Labor Day as the end of summer. I seem to remember swimming on Labor Day. I would have thoughts of grilled food and the horror that school was coming and the freedom was ending. I don’t ever remember anyone explaining the meaning of Labor Day until much later. What is Labor Day in this day and age? Store sales? An extra day off? A day to see a good film? Labor Day was made an official federal holiday in 1894 and as its name suggests, its purpose was to honor our labor. There was a time when newspapers would have stories and editorials about the importance of labor and how labor built our country and keeps it going. But we live in a different world now. What is labor? There are still many who work in factories, but that number is shrinking. We have many people surviving through the Uber-style gig economy, which will of course eventually be replaced by automatic cars. What happens where there is no more labor? No more work? Who and what will we be then? I don’t know, but someone will still be making films and I guess that is work. As I am trying to finish programming the DocuFest, I guess watching videos is work, or is it? Anyway, please appreciate the people who labor to make your life better. Just take a look around you right now and think about how many people put work into everything you see. Someone designed the art on this business card in front of me, somebody printed it, and somebody handed it to me. Realize there is a world of people who have worked to get you to the moment you are in right now and take some time to appreciate the laborers. In VAD news, Frame of Mind, a TV show we produce with KERA TV, begins Thursday night at 10:00 PM. Our first episode is Frank Reaugh: Pastel Poet of the Texas Plains. “Frank Reaugh, one of Texas’ earliest and most distinguished artists, is well known by art insiders, but unfortunately relatively unknown to the rest of us. In this film, Marla Fields aims to change that by bringing the work of this Texas artist, inventor, naturalist and educator to a new audience.” Here is the trailer for the season. Before we get into films for the week, I bet there are some of you out there looking for money to produce your films. Women in Film Dallas has a scholarship program and the deadline is coming up in October. They provide a finishing fund grant for a short and a feature filmmaker ($1k - short film/$2k feature film), and a graduate and undergraduate tuition scholarship ($1k each). Your support in helping spread the word for these grants and scholarships with your students and colleagues would be most helpful. Here are the links just in case: Finishing fund grants Tuitions scholarships So, I have two picks for this week: A 35mm print of Computer Chess, a film that played at the Oak Cliff Film Festival when it was young, is playing Saturday the 8th at the Texas Theatre. The other is Madlines’ Madeline by Josephine Decker, which is playing at the Angelika theater. It did not get a great mini- review in the Morning News, but Josephine Decker does great work, so go and support. The Texas Theatre will also be showing the newly restored 2001: A Space Odyssey and Caddy Shack, which might be a good way to end the summer. The Alamo is showing Carrie on Wednesday night, which is really a great film and worth a repeat viewing. The first Tuesday Social Justice Film fest is showing Lindy Lou, Juror Number Two on Tuesday night at 7:00 PM AT 3839 W. Kiest Blvd., Dallas, Texas 75233 Phone: 214.337.2429. “For 20 years, Lindy has lived with an unbearable feeling of guilt. Committed to fulfilling her civic duty, Lindy sat with 11 other people on a jury that handed down the death penalty to a Mississippi man convicted of a double homicide. An overwhelming feeling of regret compels Lindy to track down her fellow jurors. A conservative, religious woman from the South, she manages to tackle this topic with humor, an open mind and sincere curiosity.” Have a great week and don't miss Frame of Mind on Thursday.

Best Jogging Stroller For Toddlers
Baby strollers come in many formats, sizes, prices from under $100 to over a $1000, you heard right, over a thousand. Two newly innovated synthetic skin textures are already produced by Topco-Sales in the means of CyberSkin by Vixen Creations having a substance called VixSkin. The majority of these bigger strollers are just too bulky and don't open easy enough when you've screaming kids you are attempting to control in the crowded parking lot. Parents that are more familiar using the InStep Biker trailers may also take pleasure in the smooth suspension and shock absorption properties of the Instep jogging stroller lines. Most of these expensive strollers usually are not storage friendly, most don't don't fold easily and take up a serious little bit of room inside a car trunk, backseat, in the van or an SUV. You can frequently also take the cot off and use it as a carrier. com sells a wonderful Double Decker Pet Stroller than will comfortably transfer both pets at exactly the same time. Some of the lightest joggers are around 22-24 pounds compared to heavier models that hover around 30 pounds. The other two strollers that fall under the identical do not buy list are the Tike Tech City X3 all terrain jogging stroller and the similar Tike Tech X3 Sport jogging stroller.
youtube
The Instep Run Around models have 16" wheels are designed having a quick release wheel system and therefore are rust-proof and sit on a powder coated lightweight steel frame. My kids have loved taking in the surroundings when we go on a vacation around the block. My kids have loved taking in the surroundings whenever we go on a trip round the block. Spending $1000 to have one of these strollers is a very individual decision, if you've just one child and no more planned, from my point of view that is expensive. Additionally they are available in multiple seats.
The Schwinn jogging stroller is perfect for serious joggers who appreciate just how this single stroller maneuvers. The strong points of these strollers is they serve a growing infant from birth up to the point in which a stroller is no more needed. Strollers make everyone happy and which is sufficient cause to choose one for the family. This popular single model jogging stroller also has a fixed wheel that's twenty-inches in diameter, which helps to make the stroller much easier to push over any kind of terrain. Just this past year the Baby Trend Expedition Stroller was voted #1 because the best to buy for lower priced strollers (approx $100). This is because knees and ankle joints are under constant pressure once the foot hits the floor during jogging. One, it is not very expensive. The Instep Safari 2 Double jogging stroller is designed with a steel frame, which is lightweight and contains a young child capacity of 50 pounds and makes for easy handling in conjunction with the versatile 12' swivel lock front wheel. Choose right type of footwear while jogging, that is specifically d for running. I am not suggesting you need to spend over $1,000 on a new stroller, although you can. They are versatile strollers which work nicely for taking towards the food store or walking on a trail inside the park. I am not suggesting you have to spend over $1,000 on a fresh stroller, although you can. Parents should also look right into a jogging stroller that has the ability to simply accept an infant car seat adaptor for optimal protection for the newborn. When you purchase your jogging stroller, its good to appear at any Jogging Stroller Accessories you may need to go together with your stroller. If you imagine you've a larger space in your hands, remodel which will you should check out other garage plans. The used strollers will still command prices in jeep jogging stroller excess of $200 but it's a good deal nevertheless for anyone looking to save lots of the maximum amount of while they can.

Beware the Mountain
This one is a bit of a doozy and makes up for not having many dreams the past week I guess...... So it begins with me trying to plan a trip for my office. I have four destinations in mind. A lake in Texas that is a sovereign nation. Like literally, its just a lake but its not part of Texas, its its own nation... The Texas tar pits, that are only 30 minutes north of the lake. You have to be careful though, when you search Texas tar pits you have to make sure to write “The Tar pits” if you accidentally write anything else it will take you to the La Brea tar pits... I also should mention that this part of the screen is just a computer screen. Like I do not even have my POV where I can see my hands looking these things up. I am in full screen and what I think happens on the screen. I never actually learn the next two locations though I do keep adding destinations to my google maps trip, there is never actually anything written in the destination line... I map it out and can see that the last two destinations are right next to each other and only 15 minutes from The Tar Pits but they are still a mystery...
The next bit is a sequence of us trying to get to the first destination. We have to sort of hike slash sit on these motorized buggys that can only take us a sort distance...I know you must be imagining an old school horse and buggy carriage right? Unfortunately you could not be more wrong. You have a big chair, very similar to the one you would find on a Japanese night bus and it is just attached to four wheels. To this you might say, wait Alex, are you telling me that each person gets their own car? To which i tell you yes but they cannot steer them so each ‘car’ is literally held to the next by a piece of rope and you have one person in the first with a steering wheel that pulls the party. Now in real life I know exactly why we could not take this mode of transportation long term because its hilariously dumb.
So half way through our excursion, we come across a sort of side quest where we can take a train that is actually a bus to a small antique fair / community garage sale. I vote to attend alone and get on the train bus. I feel at this point i should explain that I am referring to what is actually a giant double decker silver bullet train, that instead of being on a track just has rows of centipede wheels on it and drives around on the road even though it is train length. The antique mall / community garage sale is only 10 minutes away but its over treacherous land that I cannot make on my own apparently. There are 5 other passengers that I do not know that have elected to make this journey with me but I do not know them. We pull up and its literally 5 mobile home trailers lined up with old people with junk outside in the dust. I say dust because there was not even grass, their objects were just sitting on dry cracked earth and in dusty boxes. I walk down the train and exit at the back end so that I can walk along the line of trailer to peruse their goods. However I hypothesize that I got to the event too late because all that is left is junk. As I walk from trailer to trailer each old person just has broken lamps and rubbish. I walk at a swift pace back to the front of the train bus while still checking each stall to make sure I don’t miss anything and enter back onto the train at the front. Four of the other girls are already on the bus and I greet them with well that was shitty wasn’t it?! They agree and I notice the final girl is behind me. Somehow as she is going up the two steps onto the train bus she sees an object in one of the closest trailers boxes and turns back off to check it. The moment she touches the box the doors of train bus close and we start to pull away. Me and the four girls gather at the window and watch in horror as she realizes she is being left and turns around and starts running after train bus right up until the point where it gets too treacherous to continue. I lament that she will now be trapped there forever for some horrible reason that is now in real life very scary to me. I return to my traveling companions and we continue our journey.
The next and final part of our trip is scaling a TERRIFYINGLY small bit of snowy path, AT THE VERY TOP OF AN EXTREMELY STEEP CLIFF with nothing but a rope bridge to keep us from careening off to our deaths. There is a sign that actually recommends that we crawl through this path to be safe because of the slippery snow, which we do. So single file my whole party crawls across this pathway and on the other side is a magnificent ski chalet that will be our home for the weekend. Its not a hotel, its an air bnb which is incredible that we get this whole mansion to our selves and it has enough rooms for every single one of us. At this point you may be thinking wait Alex, I thought you were going to the sovereign Texas lake, The Texas Tar Pits, and the two other locations that are in fact in Texas where there are no really tall snowy mountains? Well let me tell you..... that is because those destinations are no longer important and we never go to them and in fact we are just on a snowy mountain for the rest of the trip....
So we all scatter around the chalet which to my dismay is all dusty and cobwebby and has not been generally taken care of. i apologize to my coworkers for making such a ruining their trip and they tell me they don’t mind, its an amazing find. While walking around exploring and ‘cleaning’ up the chalet I find two kittens. Before i move forward i saw ‘cleaning’ in quotations because I left all the cobwebs but moved furniture covers off furniture and sweeper a little bit at parts that were too dirty for me to move through, this becomes important later. So the two kittens I find, one is black and one is a dark brindle color and they are malnourished from being abandoned in this mansion. I get sad and want to care for them. I set them up each their own individual beds in show boxes and go get them some cat good. When i come back there is a gentleman at the desk in the study I have set the kittens up in. He welcomes me back and I do not find this weird in the slightest, in fact I act as if he has been there the whole time. He tells me the black cat will need extra care because he is extra malnourished so I need to give him special attention. He gives me a fucking bag of kit-kats and tells me to give him a few before I start to feed him. Now Drew, I fucking know that cats can’t have chocolate, and i know this so strongly that in my dream my mind was screaming DON’T FEED THEM CHOCOLATE, THEY WILL DIE, but I was compelled too, I unwrapped a mini kitkat and the little kitten ate it up hardily. I then prepared two bowls of dry food and cut up some melon and sprinkled it on top of both bowls. Again I have no idea why I do this, I have no idea what cat policy on melon is, but I cannot stop myself. I sprinkle extra kit-kat to my own dismay on top of the black cats bowl and place each bowl in each cats respective shoe box. At this point I notice that each cat and shoe box are now HALF the size. The kittens go at their food with reckless abandon and I lament it is because I am not feeding them enough. I go and fetch a pitcher of water with the intention of giving the kittens some water. When i come back the man at the desk is now a slimy toad/fish/human hybrid and is still sitting at the desk except the desk his desk is now a tank and hes sort of sitting in it but equally ‘at’ it because its still a desk. I again find no concern with this change and notice that the kittens and their shoe boxes again have halved in size. At this point they are literally so small. I can fix the shoe box in my hand and the kittens are the size of a pinky finger. In my alarm I know that I have to pour the water into the shoe boxes and the kittens will grow. Yes, the kittens are apparently those stupid ‘I grow in water toys’ and I need to save them before they dry up and disappear. I water the black kitten perfectly and then I move to the brindle kitten. Jessica N. my friend at work shows up behind me and tells me that I have watered him too much. I freak out and lift him up and he’s face down in the water but he is now shaped like hello kitty. I scream and reach over the tank lid of the desk and hold my thumb over the kitten and pour out most of the excess water while Jessica tells me that I need to be careful of over watering kittens. I bring my hand back and I see that the brindle kitten is now literally just a hello kitty toy and is made of plastic. He is just a small plastic toy in a small show box that is filled with the smallest bit of water... I think of that’s good he’s not dead and not OH GOD WHY IS THE ALIVE KITTEN NOW A TOY and set him down to join the other kitten and box who THE EXACT SAME THING HAS HAPPENED TOO. Writing this in real life is really starting to freak me out...
The kitten part of the dream is over I guess and I go down the hall to check on my guests and fellow coworkers. Jessica tells me that Bree has been acted strangely. I go and check on her and she is all wrapped up in bed and says she is not feeling good. I tell her I will look for something for her. I back out the hall and look around and of course find nothing. I start to head back to her room when her silhouette is on the floor just outside her room at the very end of the hallway. Her body literally inch worms toward me a few feet but still pretty far down the hall and she tells me not to worry about it now, she is feeling better, this is how she wants to me. I am stunned. I notice there is a trail of water on the floor where she has just scooted from. Jessica is behind me and asks Bree what happened. She again says this is how she wants to be and stands up for the first time. She is still silhouetted but you can see if she a fucked up dolphin human hybrid. She can’t even stand up all the way because of her curved dolphin back. I start to completely lose my mind at this horror and tell her she can’t possibly want to be like this!? Jessica is equally concerned. Bree yells that she is find and don’t try to find a way to change her back because this is what she wants. She lays back down on her belly and scoot back into the bedroom leaving a trail of water behind her. I must pause at this point to say WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK. Like when I dream this it was scary in the dream but writing it I am struck but how terrifying and hilarious it is. Why am I like this.... ok.. moving on.
I turn to Jessica and tell her that we cannot leave Bree like this and Jessica agree that we have to go into town and figure something out. We take a very long stair case down to the ground floor and have to jump over a spiderweb on the way (remember, I said it would come back). We exit the chalet and walk down the street to a small shopping mall strip center. Like this place is so small, its on a four way intersection. Three of the sides have nothing but the snowy tundra and we are on the only corner that has like a CVS on the corner itself and a strip mall with two stores in it behind it separated by a few parking spaces. The stores in the strip mall are a burger shop and a veterinarians place. I tell Jessica that we should grab lunch first at the burger place first because maybe what happening to Bree is just because she hasn’t eaten yet and if that doesn’t work we can go to the Vet and see about getting some medicine. She agrees with me whole heartedly and we go into the burger joint. It is an orange and white color scheme but it is most definitely not whataburger. Its a normal fast food burger place where you order at the counter and they bring it to your table based on your number. I order my own food and Jessica orders Bree’s. For some reason it is agreed upon that now that Bree is a dolphin person she cannot eat meet so we order her a Veggie patty. We take our numbers and go sit at a table to wait for our food. At this point, to no alarm to either of us, Dolphin Bree is now sitting with us. We tell her we hope the food helps and she agrees that she hopes the same. The server walks up with our orders. She is a small portly Polynesian woman with alot of purple eye shadow on. She passes out mine and Jessica’s burgers and then moves to Bree. She drops down a plate in front of her that is a bun, lettuce and A FUCKING ENORMOUS CHICKEN FRIED STEAK. It is spilling off the sides it is so huge. i tell the woman that the order is wrong. She tells me its not. Jessica and Bree ask me to not worry about it. I tell them no this is wrong. I pull out Bree’s receipt tag and read it off to the woman. It says -bun - lettuce - veggie patty - mustard. I shout at her does that seem right to her? She is very terse with me, she says ok its wrong but theres nothing she can do about it. I ask her why not, she needs to remake it. She says it can’t be remade and starts to go back to the kitchen. I shout and follow her. Jessica and Bree beg me to drop it and Bree is giving me a hard dolphin disappointment face. I debate for just a moment before shouting NO I CAN’T LET THIS CONTINUE, WE DID NOTHING WRONG I WANT A REFUND. I go up to the register and its a cute young blond girl that is still in high school. I explain the situation to her and she says she cannot remake the order or give me a refund. I tell her that is outragous and yell to speak to her supervisor. She giggles and tells me there isn’t one. I ask her what she means and she just shakes her head. i look around thinking its a prank and ask her when a manager will be in next? She says never. I start losing it. I start running around the store looking for the manager or supervisor, there has to be one right!? They have back office rooms stacked with boxes and paper but not upper management. These two huge bouncer dude in black shirts start following me and I know they are preparing to throw me out. I run back to the blond register girl and ask her desperately to please tell me what is going on. She takes pity on me and writes down the managers email address. I get really excited. Her boy co worker register counterpart notices whats going on and scoffs at her. He ask with a ton of disdain if she is really going to give some rando the information? She gets really flustered and starts to scribble out the email. Terrified that I will lose my last chance to get a refund I snatch the paper from her. She holds it tightly and begs me not to take it as she will lose her job. I tell her I am sorry but I need a refund and rip the paper out of her hands. I check it and it is still legible so I run out the door so they can’t stop me back to the chalet, already forgetting about Jessica and Bree. I jump over the spiderweb on the stairs again and get back to the study and a laptop and quickly email the supervisor what has happened. My watch goes off and I know I have to go back to the strip mall for some reason and run back down the stairs. When I do this I bumble into the spiderweb and it gets all over my jeans. I groan loudly but continue back to the burger place where I am picking up the blond register girl from work like I’m her mom? This is not surprising to me at all for some reason and I tell her I am sorry for doing this to her but I had to get the justice. She says its ok and she wishes she didn’t have to work there anyway and that I was wronged. I thanked her and walk her back to the chalet. Along the way employees of the burger place start chasing up for what we know. I know I am about to uncover the bigger mystery of the mountains as we run and THIS is finally where I wake up.... a fucking cliff hanger.

I’m fortunate to have had the opportunity to explore a significant amount of the world in my lifetime thus far; having been to all six habitable continents. Often in conversations, people will ask me what are my top 10 favorite places in the world. Anyone who is a traveler would understand it is ultimately an impossible endeavor. In essence, your favorites are a moving target. What you loved backpacking in Thailand 20 years ago might not be what you would put on your top list today. And the more you continue to travel, the more the list will shift. Also, is “favorite” based on nature and natural beauty? Adventure? Art and Architecture? Food? History? The warmth of the locals?
Given that laborious task, I began jotting down places while riding a 4+ hour shuttle in Costa Rica. I had a little time on my hands with no WiFi and painfully slow-moving traffic on the international highway which runs through the country – connecting to Panama in the south and Nicaragua to the north. The problem was the list kept growing as I thought back fondly of so many incredible memories spanning multiple decades. I have attempted to cull it down to 10, with a few honorable mentions of which I could not let go. And may I remind you, this list IS a moving target?
Perth, WA, Australia
It has been many years since I have been there, but this city on Australia’s SW coast (and the surrounding region of Freemantle and the Margaret River Valley wine region) has an unmistakable “cool” vibe I have not quite found elsewhere in the country. The year round, near-perfect weather negates the need for heating or air conditioning. Outdoor sports can be found everywhere, from the Australian rules football fields to sailing on the Swan River to snorkeling around the azure waters of Rottnest Island. Looking for wildlife you just don’t see back home? Black swans roam the parklands by the Swan River and Lake Monger and quokkas fearlessly approach you on Rottnest Island looking for a sip of water from your cup. It is worth the flight to this hip city on Australia’s other coast.
Tamarindo, Guanacaste, Costa Rica
Up until a few decades ago, Tamarindo was a sleepy village on Costa Rica’s NW Pacific coast where surfers would come for the great breaks. Since tourism has discovered this gemstone, it has grown up into something international, but still keeping its exotic roots. Even post-discovery, the population averages only about 3,000. The mix of tourists, expats and locals add unique threads of color to the tapestry of this chill beach town. It is the smallest place I know where you can walk down the street (or the broad, beautiful beach) and hear 5 different languages any given day. And the food? Don’t let the tiny population fool you, there are over 100 restaurants and bars to satisfy the foodie in you! Plus, you can SUP, surf, golf, fish, horseback ride, ATV, or just photograph wildlife to your heart’s content all within 20 minutes. With the least amount of rain in the country, there is never a bad time to visit.
Goa, India
The small state of Goa on India’s west coast consists of 101 kms of coastline and has a distinctive personality blending east and west, Hindu and Catholic, seafood and curry. It is decidedly India, yet heavily influenced by the Portuguese for almost 450 years. In my travels to Incredible India, I find myself returning each time to Goa. I cannot put my finger on it. The air is different there. Perhaps there is just something exotic about swimming in the Arabian Sea and legally being able to wear a bikini in India with no one judging you as you throw back a cold Kingfisher beer! There are dozens of beaches, some boasting crowds of tourists and others are quiet hideaways. Portuguese fortresses dot the shoreline. The food is endless, from beach shacks to upmarket restaurants perched on cliffs watching the sun sink into the sea at the end of the day. And no trip to Goa is complete without a visit to the all-night Saturday hippie market – Arpora.
Austin, Texas, USA
The capital of Texas has made a name for itself flaunting its live music-food trailers-high tech-gay pride-hipsters-cowboys-starving artists-tolerant vibe. A pretty remarkably harmonious blend, given all the ideological differences. Home to two of the country’s largest music festivals (Austin City Limits, South-by-Southwest) and the only Formula 1 track in the USA (Circuit of the Americas), and a great university (University of Texas) -with a massive amount of football followers, this little powerhouse city had put itself on the international map. But it isn’t all music, cars, and football. One must visit the prettiest capital building in the country, the only one standing taller than the USA capital. Austin is located where the farmland to the east meets the scenic hill country to the west. There are delightful day trips to central Texas places like swimming holes and a massive pink granite dome (called Enchanted Rock) and dozens of wineries. A weekend is simply not long enough!
Fira, Santorini, Greece
Architecture of Oia town on Santorini
The moment you step onto your whitewashed terrace overlooking the caldera, the “wow factor” will engulf you. This crescent shaped island of Santorini (or Thera) is actually a volcano which erupted thousands of year ago. The city of Fira is built on the side of the volcano overlooking the sunken rim into the sea. You can take a gondola ride to the bottom, or if you are adventurous take a donkey. From there you can catch a boat to the center where you can swim the ancient volcanic waters. For history buffs, you will not want to miss the Akrotiri Ruins. And if you like wine there are multiple wineries to tour. There’s nothing like a good Greek wine to accompany that fresh feta cheese and kalamata olive plate. Santorini is beyond charming and a truly iconic Greek island. Foodies will also celebrate the family owned Greek restaurants at every turn.
Cape Town, South Africa
This international city sits near the bottom of the African continent on the Western Cape where the frigid, turbulent waters of the Atlantic meet the warm, caressing waters of the Indian ocean. You can occasionally see a line at Cape Point where they meet. The Cape Town area boasts everything from international dining and shopping, to gorgeous beaches, to nearby world renowned wine regions, to beautiful museums, to a fascinating and yet difficult history of apartheid. Must do’s include going to the top of one of the cities natural symbols, Table Mountain where the views are spectacular. As well as hanging out at Victoria & Alfred Waterfront. You can ride a double-decker city sightseeing bus which is a fantastic way to hop on and hop off seeing all the major sites. The locals are friendly and the natural beauty is unparalleled.
Rome, Italy
For anyone interested in the incredible history and architecture of the Roman Empire, Rome is certainly a fantastic place to commence. It is an easy city to navigate on foot, just make sure you have good walking shoes! It was my first European city to see and I can attest to the fact that throwing a coin in Trevi Fountain does actually work, as I returned multiple times. My top historic places to see are The Vatican City, The Coliseum, The Pantheon, the carnivalesque Piazza Navona, and The Roman Forum. However, there is a multitude of hidden treasures beyond the touristy historic sites. Don’t be afraid to roam the narrow streets of Rome to find little pizzerias and antique shops and neighborhoods still preserved as they were in the Middle Ages. Surprises abound. I once had a waiter kiss me (briefly but passionately) in Piazza Navona whilst leaving his restaurant after dinner. A thrill for a teenage girl! Shhhhh, don’t tell my mother.
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
If you like Samba and an easy sexual culture and caipirinhas and beaches and Brazilian steak houses and unique art and a vibrant all-night-party city, this place it for you! I visited Rio on my honeymoon with my “starter husband” and have found myself returning again each decade. Since the recent Olympics there, they have cleaned up the beaches and the city to help make visitors feel safe (I have never had any safety issues). A day at famous Ipanema Beach is a bucket list item. And the sights are endless. One must go to the top of Sugarloaf Mountain via cable car to take in the sweeping views of the city. And seeing Christ the Redeemer statue will give you goose bumps, even if you are not Christian. You can hire a driver/tour guide or take the subway with new stops being added. It is a massive city and challenging to navigate, otherwise. Carnival is not for the faint of heart, but certainly a fantastic once-in-a-lifetime spectacle.
Bora Bora, French Polynesia
Bora Bora earns my title as the most romantic place in the universe. I recommend you take a lover when you travel there. From the moment you fly into the tiny airstrip from WWII to taking a water taxi to your over-the-water bungalow, everything is absolute magic. The landscape is so spectacular it almost looks fake. The water is incredibly clear and the sand is soft and blindingly white and the green mountains are a shade of green not found on the color wheel. It is the kind of place that makes you want to swim naked! Be sure to book a room with a see-through floor so you can watch the sea life swim by. And if you can carve out time to leave your love nest, rent bikes to take in the astonishing beauty of this tiny tropical island or book a traditional Tahitian dance show. Join the throngs of rich and famous who have enjoyed a drink or dinner at Bloody Mary’s. Or simply lose yourself on a hammock.
Honorable Mentions:
Halong Bay, Vietnam
A UNESCO national world heritage site in the Gulf of Tonkin, includes some 1,600 islands and islets, forming a spectacular seascape of limestone pillars. Godsmack beauty at every vista. Take the 2-day cruise.
London, England
I have always had an affinity for this lovely, historic and vibrant city. After attending school nearby, I desperately wanted to live there. But oh, the weather.
Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA
The largest national park in the USA at 5586 square kilometers (3471 square miles) is a stunner with dramatic canyons, bubbling mud pots, shooting geysers and roaming buffalo. Natural and unusual beauty in the wild west.
Luxor, Egypt
History, history, history. No, not American history. No, not European history. ANCIENT history that truly defines “wonders of the world.”
Masai Mara, Kenya
Best place on earth for a safari and luxury camping. There is nothing as thrilling as seeing these magnificent animals the way nature intended them to to be.
And the adventure continues. Stay tuned!
