Chapter XXII
Beginning: Chapter I Previous: Chapter XXI
Petrichor belongs to @limey-self-inserts ! :3
The double-decker tour buses were parked outside of the satanic monastery's main building. An excited buzz had filled the halls all week as people packed their belongings and went over checklists again and again. A man with a clipboard stood at the door and directed the church members to their assigned buses, while two others organized the loading of equipment into the trucks and trailers.
Ardis, Papa, the eight band ghouls, and a backstage ghoul named Petrichor were all assigned to the first bus in line. After putting their suitcases in the storage bay, Papa gave Ardis, Petrichor, and Sunshine a quick tour of the bus. Walking through the ground floor revealed couches on either side of the middle walkway. Past that was a small kitchenette on the left-hand side with basic necessities – a microwave, sink, toaster, and mini-fridge – along with a row of cabinets under the counter. On the right was a small dining table with four seats. At the very back were a small coffee bar and the door to the bathroom.
Papa led them up the stairs. The door to their left revealed a fairly large common space with an L-shaped couch taking up two of the walls and a sizable TV. The hallway to the right had five bunk beds – three on one side, two on the other. Each bed had a privacy curtain. Beyond a small coat rack with spaces to store the ghouls’ helmets was Papa’s private room at the end of the hallway. “And I have one last thing to show you, angel,” Papa said, ushering Ardis into his room. “Petrichor, be a lamb and give us a hand, won't you? And Sunshine, do me a favor and find Aether. He’ll want to see this."
Stepping off the tour bus, Sunshine spotted Aether outside helping load the trailer. He often got recruited for such tasks on account of his physique. She intercepted him before he could fetch another crate and explained that Papa wanted to see him.
“Huh?” He wiped a bit of sweat off his brow and rolled his stiff shoulders. “What for? Is everything alright?”
Sunshine shrugged. “He said he had something to show Ardis, and that you’d want to see it too. They’re on the bus in his room with Pet.”
Aether wasn’t sure what to expect, but he followed Sunshine back to the tour bus and headed upstairs. He gave a gentle knock on the door. “Papa? You wanted to see me?”
“Just a moment,” Papa’s muffled voice came through the door. Aether could hear Ardis and Petrichor giggling.
“Alright, I’ll be out here when you’re ready,” Aether said, smiling to himself at the laughter. Sunshine excused herself, saying she needed to help the other ghoulettes with their bags, and headed back downstairs to exit the bus. Aether waited patiently, doing his best to subtly eavesdrop on the excited chatter that made it through the door. He couldn't make out more than the occasional "now, let me just tighten this" or "Petrichor, could you– yes, perfect".
A minute or two later, Papa’s voice sounded again. “Are you ready, Mr. Ghoul?”
“I don’t even know what I’m supposed to be ready for!” he laughed. “But yes, let’s see what all this is about.”
The door opened to reveal Ardis, smiling from ear to ear and dressed in her very own Nameless Ghoul uniform. Aether’s heart skipped a beat, his eyes scanning her up and down.
Tumblr media
"Oh, Aether, isn't it just perfect?" Ardis cooed, doing a twirl to show off her new costume. "I love it!"
Aether was speechless. Their uniforms typically made the wearer look a bit intimidating, given its militaristic inspiration and distressed edges, but that was not the case with his angel. She looked adorable. He could tell it had been made specifically for her – the vest and trousers hugged her curves and tiny waist in a way that made Aether's cheeks warm. He wasn't used to seeing her in anything other than her stiff work uniform or a pair of oversized pajamas. "I–" Words still escaped him as he gawked at her.
"How did you even know my measurements?" she asked Papa, still admiring her new uniform in awe.
"Oh, Petrichor and I have our ways," he chuckled, determined to keep his methods a secret. Pet looked very pleased with themself, their bat-like wings fluttering slightly as they grinned at her.
"What do you think, Aether?" Papa asked. "It suits her, no? I figured she ought to look the part if she'll be touring with us."
Instead of answering, the ghoul marched forward and pulled her into his arms to kiss her. It caught her by surprise – he usually wasn't the type to get too affectionate with her in front of an audience. When he pulled away after a brief moment, Ardis's cheeks were flushed. She knew Pet would tease her about it later on. "What was that for?" she asked him, in a bit of a daze.
Aether offered her an embarrassed grin. "Do you have any idea how good you look in that?"
She rolled her eyes, smiling even wider. "Oh, please."
The moment was interrupted when they heard footsteps coming up the stairs. Aether released her, suddenly aware of his audience again. Swiss's head poked around the corner. "Oh, hey, guys! I thought I heard someone up here. What's–" He gasped. "Does the angel have her own little uniform?"
Ardis nodded excitedly, repeating her twirl to show it off. "Do you like it?"
"Aren't you adorable!" He marched up to the group and threw his arms around both Ardis and Petrichor. "My favorite little groupies," he teased with a grin, pulling them both snug against his sides. Ardis giggled, nuzzling into him. "You excited to be on the big kid bus this year, Pet?" he asked. It had been at his and Rain's insistence that Petrichor be offered the spare bunk.
"I don't know how I'll get any sleep on this tour, with all your snoring," Petrichor teased back.
Swiss scoffed and feigned offense. "I do not snore! You of all people should know that, tesoro." Petrichor gave him a small punch in the chest when he winked at them, their cheeks flushing despite themself. "Alright, alright!" Swiss laughed, releasing them both. "The others are just about ready – they'll be boarding any minute now."
"Wonderful," Papa said with a nod, clapping his hands together. "Go ahead and pick out your beds before the others arrive, if you have a preference. The night owls tend to sleep closer to the lounge so they won't disturb the others when they finally go to bed, and those who actually enjoy a good night's sleep usually prefer my end of the bus."
"I usually sleep there," Aether said, pointing to the middle of the three bunks along the left wall, "on the bottom. You're welcome to sleep above me, if you'd like."
"Are you sure whoever normally sleeps there won't mind?" Ardis asked.
Aether waved away the notion. "I don't think Rain's attached to the spot. Everyone's going to have to shift around one way or another, anyway."
"Alright, sounds like a plan." She fetched her backpack and the clothes she'd previously been wearing from Papa's room and set them on her new bed to claim her spot. Swiss chose a spot closer to the lounge and similarly insisted that Pet take the bunk above him. Aether hid a grin. Something was going on there, but he'd decided long ago to stay out of it. Papa, Ardis, and the three ghouls then made their way to the lounge to clear the hallway in anticipation of the others' arrivals.
As Aether took his seat on the couch and extended a hand to Ardis, he took a moment to reflect on how strange his life had become. An angel was joining them on their tour because he'd fallen for her instead of corrupting her like he was supposed to do. "If you'd like," he whispered in her ear when she sat next to him, "you're more than welcome to snuggle up with me in my bunk for a bit before you go to sleep."
She gave him a bashful grin and a small nod. "Yes, please," she replied quietly.
He smiled and wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close. His life was a strange one, but he wouldn't have it any other way.

in my mind whenever i draw althaea and themis in modern day clothes all i can think about is althaea babysitting themis at her place which is a wooden panelling trailer house in the woods and themis walks in and immediately finds hythlo sitting at the big clunky computer playing desktop solitaire (with the spider) in a white tank and pajama bottoms with a homemade ash tray to the side of the double decker walmart desktop table, turn to the right and the open kitchen with a yellow fridge one of those wall-attached island bars, trun BACK around because the computer is in the living room where a subwoofer system is hooked up to the TV which is surrounded by identical leather couches and a singular lazyboy, with a bean bag and some blankets thrown on the floor in case you wanna sit at the only ''kitchen table'' in the house which is the low as hell coffee table in pristine condition
take the tight hallway to the right and althaea's room is a doorless little square room with one of those vertical near the ceiling windows open with a metal latch (did i mention the entire house besides bathroom and kitchen is covered in white carpet), a mattress on a low walmart frame, a singular CRT TV on a plastic tub, and a closet that takes up an entire wall made with shitty wood that rolls inside of itself and houses all of althaeas clothes and the fuse box. and when you go farther you find the bathroom which is a shitty toilet knee-knockingly close to the sink directly across from it, a singular cabinet that doubles as the mirror, a low bathtub, and a random bar to the side that has all their deoderants and makeup products (and another homemade ash tray) filed on top)
to the other side of the house is the door to the down stairs, which is an entire concrete dungeon that keeps the boiler, the heater, the washer and dryer and every single stored away holiday decoration, scrapbooks, luggages, and their bikes. no window besides a small one once again near the roof.
althaea teaches themis how to make 2006-era slime (putting flour and water in a zip loc black and playing with it through the bag until it became nothing but paste), LOUDLY play pocketful of sunshine by natasha bettingfield, and go outside to randomly build the bridge to terabithia with the work tools kept in the basement and random shaved planks of wood and log halves piled in the wood shed (where she also parks her car)
you have to end this all off with the fact that althaea would be wearing a black spaghetti strap tank top with low rise, skinny flare jeans bedazzled on the pockets with a beaten up brown leather belt and shitty pink flip flops, and themis stands there in a blazed WAFFLE KNIT Ed Hardy shirt that was hand bedazzled with those old weird toys that just basically pierced your shirts with 5 cent jewels that are originally meant for your hair but you found out the contraption is literally just that it has 4 metal tiangle spikes that the machine ''pinches'' down to attack to things, which works really good on shirts. get bejeweled asshole

An Animal Save Vigil
It’s an early wake up for 10 activist, travelling to the outskirts of a city suburb. Some car pool, others travel alone. It’s pitch black, bitterly icy.
5.30am alarm, put on thermals, followed by a quick meditation and glass of water to clear my head. Scrape the ice from car windows. Select ‘Air Punch’ Spotify playlist to wake me up and prepare me for a full on morning.
The slaughterhouse looks like a generic industrial estate unit, with the only suggestion being a small sign saying licensed abatoir, the lorries and trailers of farm animals turning in, and now a group of animal rights activists, with signs and large banner stating ‘SLAUGHTERHOUSE’, which they cable tie to the iron fence next to the entrance. The slaughterhouse is on a main road, a commuter route. For three hours there is no hiding what this building is.
Tumblr media
The activists hand each other blue high visibility vests to put over their clothes, to ensure they’re spotted by entering vehicles. The vests were originally yellow, but were suggested by the online activist community that bright yellow potentially causes distress to the farm animals. The activists catch up with one another, asking how their Christmases and New Years were. The slaughterhouse gate has been replaced, due to a fault in the previous one last month. This new gate has a serated top, like an upside down hacksaw. The activists discuss and theorise the choice of gate; is it to intimidate, a function for an assumed forced entry in the future, or just by chance? Other activists begin to arrive. A couple has brought tea bags and instant coffee, with a small gas stove and kettle.
Driving passed the slaughterhouse to park up, I notice a double decker livestock truck is unloading farm animals inside the buildings courtyard. Parking up on the edge of an estate of bungalows, some 50 metres away from the salughterhouse, I hug and exchange small talk with other activists already there and we make our way to the gates with the kit (banner, signs, rucksack of vests, cable ties, etc). My fingers are already numbling, and struggling to tighten the cable ties, attaching the banner to the fence. I take comfort in my prepared flask of coffee. I drink it too quickly to last out the morning freeze. Luckily their’s back up tea. The moon is full and staring at us.
Tumblr media
Most of the activist are regular to these monthly vigils, and have assumed certain roles; a few put up the banner, another places signs on the sides of the road, leaning against lamposts and the fence of the slaughterhouse. While waiting for trucks and trailers to arrive, the activists catch up and converse from small talk to philosophical concepts. They keep a passive eye towards the distant busy roundabout; to spot any oncoming trucks. A truck is spotted and communicated to the group with a domino of ‘truck’. A couple volunteers to stand in front of the truck grab signs saying ‘Please give us 3 minutes to say goodbye’ and ‘No hate for the drivers, we are here to show love for the animals’. The others set up their phones on selfie sticks, to be able to capture the animals in the trucks through open slats. Today is cow day. This slaughterhouse does either cows or sheep, due to specific machinery (bolt gun).
Tumblr media
As the truck arrives, the lower slats are closed, so we cannot see the animals. They are on a latch, I stretch to lift the latch and pull down the slats, revealing eyes and noses of cows, suddenly turning to peer out. Looking inside, the truck is full of breath, reacting with the crammed in mouths and the freezing temperature. The truck is there for a while due to issues with the new gate. After a minute of filming, activists begin to put down their phones and come closer to the truck; eye to eye, hand to nose.
The issues with the gate are quickly fixed; sending out a worker to operate opening the gate from a closer distance, as the remote range does not reach from inside where they used to open the previous gate. The presence of the worker on the inside of the gate changes the atmosphere; from a relaxed and almost routine process to a polarising one. The worker, dressed in high vis, aggressively shouts at activists to get out the way or they’ll get run over. A number of activists attempt to open dialogue, with questions like ‘Why do you think we are here?’ and ‘Do you look at the animals as they come through?’. He rarely gives answers and regularly shakes his head an turns away. In a brief interaction he reveals his concern of jobs being lost through our presence, hinting to decrease in purchasing of animal products.
As I stand in front of a decelerating, then stationary, livestock truck, with the sign asking for 3 minutes to say goodbye to the animals, they accept. The worker controlling the gate shouts to the drive to just drive ‘run them over if you have to’. The driver begins to drive on. My temper rises, I snap to the worker ‘you’re inciting violence!’, he shakes his head and walks away. Another activists shouts to him that we got what he said on camera. The moon is setting like a desert sun. Expanding, deepening, then gone.
Tumblr media
Between these bursts of action: spotting a truck in distance, grabbing signs and phones, filiming/saying goodbye and apologising to the animals, trucks going forward into the slaughterhouse – there are moments of normality through conversations, spanning the new Aldi vegan range, vertical farming and the political and societal climate in the next decade. A couple of the activists walk around the back of the building to hear the cows travel the gangway towards their slaughter. Four trucks and trailers pass through during the three hours the activists are there. As 9.30am and daylight approaches, activists begin to leave for their respective days at work, home or other. Before the majority of them leave there is the routine group photo outside the slaughterhouse, to say ‘we were there’. They pack away the signs, roll up the banner and pack up the refreshments, load them into a car, say their goodbyes and begin their day.
Some of us who are free after the vigil plan to grab a vegan breakfast at a local veggie café. These opportunities are treasured, to enter back into the ‘real world’ through comfort and understanding company. Four of us sit around a table, drink coffee, eat pancakes, complain about people and systems, and make each other laugh. There is no normal day after a vigil, I feel that stone heavier, that bit angrier. But buoyed by purpose. The community and action we do is symbolic and meaningful.

After our rally driver efforts to escape the DOC camp at Arohena, we decided to look for somewhere, let’s just say a little less stressful to enter and depart. We had heard good things from lots of people about Mangakino. Given that it was really the next available place to stay along the river, it was also a fairly logical choice.
We continued to see numerous cyclists on the road, taking part in the 2020 Ride Aotearoa. Which, as I mentioned in the last blog is around 1000 cyclists riding from Cape Reinga to Bluff. Maps we had seen had the trail following the other side of the river rejoining our side when they crossed the river here at the Waipapa Dam. A check of social media on our return home shows they have closed part of the trail (that went through private land) due to significant vandalism. This is why all the cyclists had been on the road. What is wrong with some people?
First, stop on our arrival into Mangakino was the local rugby club. Site of the dump station and two potable water taps. The place is effortless to use with a massive turn around area. It wouldn’t matter what size motorhome or 5th wheeler you had here. This is the first example of why the town is a member of the NZMCA motorhome friendly towns program. With Mangakino one of the 54 destinations in New Zealand with this status. If you want to find out more about this, click here.
There are several places in and around the town set up for freedom camping. We first stopped at what looked like a charming place, the domain carpark. Talking, however with a couple who had spent the previous night here. They explained that despite the current empty appearance, it gets really full at night.
The reserve is really well set out with a cafe set up in an old double-decker Bedford bus, (no photo was taken) the on the water play area, toilets and a hot water shower mounted on a trailer that you can use for $2. There is also a sink at the back of the toilets (outside) where you can do your dishes. An ideal place for those not as well set up as some motorhomes.
We decided that we would investigate other areas. Choosing to walk to the closest one a 500-metre stroll, with the lake on one side and the golf course on the other. This brings you to Matekuri Island. Although I have also heard it called Dog island.
Maybe the above is a good clue why people also call it dog island. What we found was a couple of great spots to park the motorhome. Close to the water and with our own “beach”. We wandered back to the domain, collected the motorhome and parked it up here. We figured this would be a great place to chill out for a couple of days and just enjoy life.
The freedom camping area here is vast. With plenty of space to really spread out and not be worried about treading on your neighbour’s toes. We got talking to a few of the other campers. A couple of whom used to live or work in the area and commented on how much the village had changed. Apparently, people see it as the new Taupo without the expense of buying a house in Taupo.
We actually made this trip at the end of February during what seemed like a heatwave. So no sooner had I parked up the motorhome than Sarah was in the water cooling off. This would be the first of many swims she had here. Really finding the water very refreshing.
This really is a great place to get out and about on your bike. The Waikato River Trails run just past Matekuri Island. So getting out the bikes for a ride was an easy decision to make.
We rode as far as the suspension bridge that crosses the river about 4.5 km’s from the camp. At that point, I was having issues with my bike. The arm that the pedal attaches too was unscrewing from the bike. Meaning that each time I pedalled, it felt like it was stripping it out of its thread. Thankfully both of our E-Bikes have a throttle function, and I was able to power my way home.
We remembered that back at the domain, we had seen a bike repair station. A great thing to find with all sorts of tools available including the correct size Allen key to fix my pedal. It’s funny looking back on the shot of Sarah and noticing how little traffic there was then. I would imagine now in the Covid 19 lockdown the tumbleweeds would certainly be blowing up the main road.
The Saturday and Sunday of our stay the NZ Wakeboard championships were being held at the domain. We wandered down both days to have a bit of a look. There were some very impressive boats probably worth a substantial amount of money. But there seemed to be a shortage of people. For what was supposed to be the NZ Champs, it looked more like a club event. I wondered if the organisers were disappointed?
On Sunday, we wandered back to see if more people had turned up. Instead, the competition had been halted with someone having fallen badly after a trick jump. He had been brought back to shore with a shoulder injury. On our arrival and not long after that, the rescue helicopter arrived. I can report that the “patient” was up and about but still taken away to be checked out in the hospital. All very exciting. No sooner had the helicopter departed than competition got underway again.
When all the Covid 19 lockdown restrictions have been lifted this is absolutely a place that I would recommend you come. Peaceful, quiet and seemingly miles from anywhere, yet in reality not that far from SH1.
While we have been on this trip, we have had some fun and games with the flyscreen in our motorhome. Essentially the strings inside it, that keep it taught snapped. So it lost its effectiveness allowing the winged pests access. So the next blog is the dramas we went through to repair it ourselves. ☕ If you liked this post (click here) to buy me a cup of coffee and help keep future posts coming ☕ To view the places we have visited click here to see them on Google maps. New 24-Hour Running Festival Announced
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
The team behind the award-winning Equinox24 event, held at Belvoir Castle in Leicestershire, are delighted to announce the launch of a second event for 2020 - Solstice24.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
Held on 27th through to 28th June 2020, Solstice24 will be hosted at the same iconic venue as its ‘sister-event’ Equinox24 and will follow the same popular concept, but at the same time welcoming a few distinct changes to set it apart as a new event in its own right. A brand new 10km route will take in hidden parts of the Castle grounds, sculptures, waterfalls, and breath-taking views. The iconic view of Belvoir Castle overlooking the course, lit up throughout the night, will certainly be a highlight of the event for runners and their spectators.
Johnny Nicol, Race Director of Solstice24 says,
‘We are so excited to finally add another race to partner Equinox24. The amazing new run course and the different time of year will give the event a very different feel and a new run experience to Equinox24 but with the same great atmosphere, organisation and venue. With Equinox24 selling out now for two years in a row, it also gives people another chance to race at the fabulous Belvoir Castle, which really is a special place to run. We can't wait for June!’
Solstice24 invites runners to take on as many run laps as possible in 24 hours. Runners can take it on as a solo effort (with solo runners covering distances between 10 and 210km) or share the fun with friends, and run as part of a relay team with between two and eight runners.
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
The weekend has a fun ‘festival feel’ with camping available within the grounds of the stunning Belvoir Castle, a light-hearted “Beer Run”, live music and a family-focused Kids Fun Run amongst others.
Keeping runners and their spectators well-fed for the weekend sits high on the organiser’s priorities too. There will be a selection of handpicked quality food stalls on site giving ample options for every meal time; including Stewarts Coffee and Route 14, a double decker licensed bar, with the event village a great place to hang out, enjoy some food and soak up the atmosphere of the event.
The location, great course and festival atmosphere is what will set this run apart and it is sure to become a firm favourite amongst trail, ultra, long distance and social runners. Solstice24 looks set to be more than just ‘another race’ – it will be a running weekend to remember.
Entries are now OPEN and with numbers for the Equinox24 event hitting nearly 3000, with most categories a sell-out, this new event is sure to be a hit, with organisers expecting it to be a popular choice amongst runners across the country.
