My HTTYD Fanfic Ideas — X Leaves Berk AU Series

Hiccup Leaves Berk AUs || X Leaves Berk AUs

These fanfic ideas for another series of mine focuses on changing the trope a bit where instead of Hiccup leaving, other characters will have their chance to leave Berk — one way or another, for one reason or another. Whether they RETURN to Berk is up to them.

The X-Leaves-Berk Series will be loosely connected but not much. Each will be stand-alone stories — with each of them set at different times for different reasons — though some of them will be connected to other separate Series.

I’m wanting this long-term project because I’ve never seen any fanfics where the rest of the Gang leave Berk besides Hiccup (and sometimes Astrid who goes with Hiccup). So I’m deciding to fix that. I’m actually quite excited about this series! ^_^

Aside from the Gang, I plan on doing stories for Stoick, Spitelout, Alvin, and Valka for this series. (Valka’s saga will be original and won’t follow the “canon” backstory given to her in HTTYD 2.) Heck, I might even do some Sagas for GUSTAV and MILDEW, of all Vikings. lol XD

Gobber, Dagur, Heather, and other characters might also have Sagas of their own but won’t be part of this Series (since they don’t leave Berk). Or maybe I will... who knows?

Some of these stories will follow canon events, such as Alvin getting banished from Berk and Stoick searching for his wife and hunting Alvin, Heather returning home, etc. While others will NOT, such as Valka’s backstory, “Traitor Johann”, Vigilante Heather, the non-Viking-like appearances of the DOTW and Wingmaidens, etc. I might even get rid of the Dragon Hunter arcs entirely. We’ll see.

Snotlout’s Saga (A Snotlout Leaves Berk AU)

Set in RoB. Saga AU. Snotlout loses the Thawfest Games, and has to deal with the aftermath. When things get out-of-hand, Snotlout and Hookfang are forced to leave Berk and become Outcasts. This saga will focus on their journey, their struggles, their successes, their losses, their sacrifices, and their growth.

This story will be set during/after the RoB episode “Thawfest” onwards and ends after RTTE but before HTTYD 2. And because Snotlout leaves so early, much of the plot will be changed. I have, in fact, been watching the show VERY closely and have been taking notes at what exactly gets changed and how to write accordingly. Surprisingly, Snotlout actually affects much of the plot. Some episodes will be gone, others will be greatly altered, and others not much will change.

I might also do a companion story for this that gets into the Gang’s POV during Snotlout’s exile, just so that you guys can see the changes caused by Snotlout’s absence. I don’t plan on doing this for the other Gang members. Only for Snotlout. Because he’s fun. lol XD

A Jorgenson’s Vengeance (A Snotlout Leaves Berk AU)

When Snotlout’s mother and little sister get abducted by raiders on their way to visit family, and Spitelout dead, Snotlout vows vengeance and rides out to find the culprits and send them all to Niflheim!

(May or may NOT be the sequel to “Snotlout’s Saga”. Depends on whether I kill Spitelout off in that one or in this one. Buuut I’m thinking not.)

Saga of the Dragon Riders (A Gang Leaves Berk AU)

Set in RTTE. After being accused by other Tribes for attacking trade ships and other targets, putting Berk into the spotlight of political and diplomatic ire, the Dragon Riders are forced to leave Berk until the matter is settled and they can prove their innocence. As they establish a base for themselves, they plan on hunting down the culprits who are responsible for attacking trade routes and other targets. But it’s not going to be easy, and gossip flies faster than a Night Fury.

And what’s worse? Oh, nothing. Just a bunch of Rogue Riders that are slippery, experienced, and don’t want to let go of their hard-won loot nor want to step up and take responsibility for their crimes and for framing them.

Can they succeed in defeating this band of marauders? Will they forever remain Outcasts? Or will they become fish food in Ran’s domain?

Bon Voyage! | Welcome to Viking Training! (A Gang Leaves Berk AU)

Set in HTTYD 1 / Post-HTTYD 1 | RoB/DoB.

Dragon Training isn’t the only thing young Vikings-in-Training have to know, there’s Viking Training as well, a program where young Vikings-to-Be learn to sail and repair longboats, navigate, fish, hunt, and other tasks. But the most important skill of all is learning to raid! After all, dragons aren’t the only pests that a Viking has to deal with — other Viking clans are also a problem. A constant fight for resources and territory is a given in an Archipelago where life is rough and often short, and the weather is even worse.

So the Gang, plus Gobber and some others, are tasks with sailing a longboat from Berk and learning to become Vikings before they can become true members of their community.

Can Hiccup the Gang manage to bear through Gobber’s tough training and make it through unscathed? Can they succeed and become full-fledged Vikings of Berk? Or will they fail and be forced into exile?

(Hiccup will be more competent in various things than he was in canon, and will also be better at weaponry and will be physically stronger.)

Going A-Viking! (A Fishlegs & Snotlout Leaves Berk AU)

Set in RoB/DoB or RTTE. Seeking adventure, fame, and glory — and riches beyond one’s imaginings — Snotlout convinces Fishlegs to join him on an adventure outside of Berk, and outside of books! What will their adventures and quests bring them into? Where will it take them? Will they succeed and bring home a wealth of riches and tales to tell? Or will they find out that leaving Berk was a terrible idea and wish they had stayed home?

Disowned Sons (A Hiccup & Snotlout Leaves Berk AU)

Set in HTTYD 1 or RoB/DoB. Hiccup and Snotlout may not see eye-to-eye most of the time, but they have more in common than they think. For one, they’re both disappointing sons of dissatisfied fathers who expect great things from them than what they actually bring to the table (each in their own way).

This boils to such a peak that when the two boys start having a fistfight with each other in public, the two heads of the two clans decide to exile them for three years in order to whip them into shape (though they secretly do it because they’ve had enough of their unfruitful progress). And thus the two lads are kicked off Berk and are left to fight for themselves.

Can Hiccup and Snotlout overcome their stark differences in order to survive and overcome all the trials, obstacles, and dangers that the Archipelago can offer them? Or will they be food for the fishes, slaves for the slavers, or appetizers for the dragons?

Fishlegs the Outcast (Fishlegs Leaves Berk AU)

Set in Post-RTTE / HTTYD 2. Impressed by Fishlegs’ heroics over the past year, Alvin the Trustworthy (formerly the Treacherous) comes to Berk to ask Stoick and Fishlegs’ parents if he could adopt him as his heir of the reformed and reinstated Outcasts (now Incasts?). Will Fishlegs accept this surprising and golden opportunity?

Astrid’s Saga (An Astrid Leaves Berk AU)

Set in RoB/DoB. It has been 9 years since the Flightmare came to Berk, killed her Uncle Finn, and tarnished her family’s honor and her uncles. Despite knowing that the Flightmare will return to Berk in less than a year, and that it’d be smarter to stay on Berk, Astrid allows her bloodlust and thirst for vengeance to not let her wait any longer. She declares to the family that she wishes to start a Quest to hunt the Flightmare and kill it before it even comes to Berk.

Despite protests from the older members, there are some who side with Astrid: Finn’s daughters and wife, her uncle and cousins, and her good friend Fjord Fjardson. They eventually end up convincing the Patriarch of their Clan and, despite the protests from her other friends and family, the date is set and a ship and dragons are prepared for the journey.

The Hoffersons are out for blood, but will they find the Flightmare? Or will they fail, and have to wait another 10 years for their chance at settling the score?

Fishlegs’ Saga (A Fishlegs Leaves Berk AU)

Set in DoB or RTTE. Ever since he was young, Fishlegs had a hunger for adventure, to sail throughout the Archipelago and beyond — meeting different peoples, eating different foods, smelling different spices, reading different books, speaking different languages... everything! He had hoped that he could’ve went with his uncle during the Dragon Raids, but his uncle always refused, and taking care of the family always took precedence.

But now? But NOW? His uncle had returned to Berk, a wealthy merchant and tales to tell — and is now offering him an invitation to travel with him! A whole new world has opened up to him! What experiences and adventures shall the young Ingerman sail through? What people shall he meet? Will he ever return to Berk after he satisfies his wanderlust? Will he even WANT to?

The Thorston Saga (A Twins Leave Berk AU)

There are 3 different scenarios/story ideas for this:

Set in DoB. After having caused mayhem one time too many, Ruffnut and Tuffnut get exiled from Berk. With nowhere else to go, they decide to either join the Outcasts, the Berserkers, or explore the world on their own.

Set in RoB/DoB. A storm hits when Tuffnut is taking a nap on the boat, and the storm sends him away from Berk into the open sea. With no idea how to get home, Tuffnut has to do his best to survive until then. Meanwhile, Ruffnut discovers that Tuffnut’s missing, and with the Riders gone on a mission, it’s up to her and Barf/Belch to search for and rescue Tuffnut. Will she find him in time before something bad happens to him?

Set in DoB. Macey has been stolen! And it’s up to Tuffnut to hunt the blaggard down and take Macey back! But he won’t be hunting alone: Ruffnut, naturally, is coming along for the ride, despite her grumblings. After all, somebody’s gotta witness Tuffnut’s legendary feats (or glorious and grisly death). Beware of Tuffnut, the World’s Most Dangerous Weapon!!!

(Disclaimer: this last story idea is not connected to “Macey’s Saga”.)

Ruffnut the Wingmaiden (A Ruffnut Leaves Berk AU)

Set in RTTE. Ruffnut, upon bonding with Wingnut and being able to fly, decides to have a little change of pace and quits being a Dragon Rider in favor of joining the Wingmaidens, effectively leaving Berk as a member. Will she regret it? What future awaits her? Will she end up enjoying being a Wingmaiden, or will she wish to return to her friends after a spell?

Ruffnut's Saga (A Ruffnut Leaves Berk AU)

Set in RTTE. After Tuffnut’s death, Ruffnut, grief-stricken, decides to quit the Riders and leave Berk, accepting Throk’s proposal and joining him on Caldera Cay.

Will she be able to pick up the pieces of her heart and be able to move on and find happiness in her new life?

Tuffnut’s Saga (A Tuffnut Leaves Berk AU)

There a 2 story ideas for this:

Set in DoB. Disenchanted with the Berkian lifestyle, and having enjoyed his time with the Outcasts during his espionage days as a scout during the Wars against the Outcasts and Berserkers, Tuffnut decides to leave Berk and become an Outcast.

Set in DoB/RTTE. Tuffnut gets an offer to become a Berserker by Heather and her cousin Thorvald (OC) on account of his achievements in battle as well as his Berserker heritage. Tuffnut decides that it’d be more fun being with them than with the boring Berkians.

Macey’s Saga (A Macey Leaves Berk AU)

Set in RoB/DoB. Eager to get away from Tuffnut and find a new owner/master, Macey manages to get itself onto a ship and away from Berk, finally free from Tuffnut’s craziness. But will she be able to stay away for long, or will Tuffnut find Macey again?

Will it manage to find a new owner before it gets found by Tuffnut? Or would it just be better to plop in the deep Northern Seas and rust and rot away from salt and time?

Gustav’s Saga (A Gustav Leaves Berk AU)

Set in RTTE. Gustav has always wondered where his father had gone, and why his mother never seemed to talk about it or even care to. With Gustav having come of-age, he decides that it’s time to explore the Archipelago and turn it upside down and inside-out in search of his father.

Will Gustav ever find his father, or will he find something better and move on? What will happen if and when he ever reunites with him?

Alvin’s Saga (An Alvin Leaves Berk AU)

Pre-HTTYD. This follows Alvin during and after his banishment and his joining the Outcasts, as well as his adventures and exploits that would eventually lead to him being called “Alvin the Treacherous.”

Mildew’s Saga (A Mildew Leaves Berk AU)

Set in RoB. This follows Mildew during the events of “We Are Family”, the finale episode of Riders of Berk, and after he gets banished and becomes an Outlaw. What became of him afterwards? Is Fungus still alive after all that, or did he become... lamb chops?

Heather’s Saga (A Heather Leaves Berk AU)

Post-“Heather’s Report”/RoB/DoB. After Heather reunites with her parents, she leaves Berk and her new friends behind as they sail back home and returns to their old lives. But not everything will be the same.

Unlike in-canon, her family and Tribe won’t perish at the hands of Dagur. This may also become a companion piece for “Snotlout’s Saga” and also the “Retelling Series”.

Stoick’s Saga (A Stoick Leaves Berk AU)

Pre-HTTYD. When his father dies as a result of Alvin’s insubordination, and the latter having fled Berk, Stoick and Spitelout vows to hunt him down. Will they be able to find him and bring him to justice?

20 years later, Stoick leaves Berk again in order to search for his wife, who, with Osvald, had gone on a Quest to find out how and why the Dragon Raids were happening, and where the source was, but had yet to return. Will he be able to find them, or will he fail? Or will he find them dead?

Valka’s Saga (A Valka Leaves Berk AU)

Pre-HTTYD. Wanting to find answers concerning the Dragon Raids and how to put a stop to them, she leaves on a Quest along with Chief Osvald of Berserk in search of those answers, leaving her family behind. Will she and Osvald find what they’re looking for? Will she be able to return to Berk? Will she be able to end the Dragon Wars?

Toothless' Saga (A Toothless Leaves Berk AU)

Set in Post-HTTYD 2 | HTTYD 3 | Post-HTTYD 3. When Toothless meets up with his old thunder of Night Furies, he decides, with Hiccup’s help, to leave Berk to visit the home he had once lived in before he had been cruelly torn away from them thanks to the Red Death. What will he find there? Are his parents still alive? Will he even want to return to Berk when he does get to his old home?

Another variation is Hiccup gets abducted and Toothless rides out to find him throughout the Archipelago.

Drift’s Saga (A Drift/Rig Leaves Berk AU)

Set in RoB | DoB | RTTE. When Drift discovers and reunites with his real parents for the first time, the young man is torn between remaining with his adoptive family whom have been with him for most of his life, or to live with his real parents whom he has just reunited with. Hiccup and Stoick encourage him to follow his heart and to go with his family if he so desires, and that he’s always welcome to return if he should so wish it.

Encouraged, Drift (now renamed Skathgard the Younger) returns to his home island with his family. Will he like this new life with the family he had always wondered about in his dreams? Will he want to stay, or will he decide to return to Berk?

So the results of my headswapping. Gabriella managed to get a new body despite me hemming and hawwing about it for months as I sat on the Moana head wondering how to body it. Francie is just super yellowed so the watm ivory tone is better suited than other bodies i have tried her on lol. DOTW 57 - start

Jolted awake again, Levi growled. He was so fucking done with his boss. Sure. We can give you mental health leave, but first we need you to finish your shifts, then we need you to go see our counsellor, get declared crazy and then, we might be able to give you leave next month... and then we're going to send you to another therapist because we don't agree with the first assessment. Levi wasn't happy. He felt like a corroded rubber band stretched too tight. He couldn't stop thinking about Eren, to the point his omega had started ignoring his messages when he was supposed to start working. His fiancée was tired, and clingy, repeatedly apologising for taking up all his attention, and the repeated trips to the bathroom, that meant dozing rather than sleeping properly didn't fucking help. He was exhausted... and last night... he'd slightly over done it in the need to blow off some steam. And who could say no with Eren in their lap "Late night?" "Is it still a late night when you haven't fucking slept?" "Is Eren alright?" Eren... yeah... his omega was... "He's fine" Levi's tone was unintentionally bitter. Eren had managed to keep to the no sex memo for four days... but last night... things sort of progressed. One moment he was helping Eren lactate... purely because Eren was in so much pain... cough... the next he was buried in his sopping wet omega. And sex happened... a lot of sex happened... his dick still tender from the previous night. They'd gone at it like rabbits all over their apartment until Levi remembered, they weren't even supposed to be having sex in the first place. But by then it was a little bit late. The bed was a mess, he'd bitten Eren's nape and shoulders red, while Eren was purring up a storm "He's fine? No complications or bleeds? No fights?" Fight. Yeah. More like a fucking attack... "Erwin, he's fine. Stop it" "Mike said he's happy to examine Eren..." "I swear to god, I'll kill you" Erwin laughed, not giving two shits about his icy scowl. Couldn't bushy brows fucking let him sleep?! "Fine. Fine. Did they authorise your leave?" "Would I be here if they did? They said I have to finish my shifts and then maybe, just maybe, I'll get time off next month" "That's not right" No fucking shit "Well, apparently their shrink doesn't think I'm crazy enough" "Have you been to see Krista?" "When have I had time?" "Off shift?" "Sure. Because I don't have Eren to look after when I get home" "Hey, if you need a break, Hanji is always happy to step in" "I thought we didn't want him going into labour before 37 weeks" "Hanji's not about to send him into labour" "Sometimes I feel like we aren't talking about the same person" "She is super excited about your engagement, so you may have a point" Oh. Yeah. That was a thing. Coming home from Mike's, they'd made their engagement Facebook official, setting the date back to original date Eren had proposed. Hanji had lost her shit, spamming the fuck out of them for not telling her sooner, while Eren hadn't wanted to deal with any of it. Ignoring her completely in favour of belly rubs and cuddles. The sedatives Mike had given Eren to help him sleep helped the first two nights, though left Eren with a constant headache and nosebleed of impressive proportions, so Levi had binned them... "Did you two remember to pay Mike?" "Hanji says all bets are void thanks to you two already being engaged" "And what does Mike say?" "That I can work off my debt in his bed" Ew... he didn't need to think that "That might work with you, but what about Hanji?" "You know Mike's more than happy to let me work her debt off too" "I really didn't need to know that" "You're the one who asked" "Mostly because I'm sick of you asking about Eren" "I'm just worried for you both" "We're engaged. He's going to give birth by the end of the month. We're bonded..." "Eren is?" Levi frowned. He was certain Erwin knew, or he was fucking with him "I feel like I told you that they're going to give him a c-section before the end of the month if he doesn't go into labour" "Have you stocked up?" "On?" "Everything? Nappies? Wipes? Milk?" Levi's mind flicked to the previous night and the milk dribbling down his chin... while Eren rocked on his leg, soaking his pants with slick and cum "Organised" "How about Christmas presents? Have you got him something yet? In case he's in labour and doesn't get to celebrate Christmas at home" "He's sorting tree ornaments today. I dragged it all out for him the other day" Actually, Eren was probably sleeping. He'd asked for the tree before everything had gone down, but he'd firmly told his fiancée not to put the tree up on alone. He kind of hoped he wasn't napping, on the off chance he could get a full nights sleep "Alone?" "He's fine. Ok. My phone hasn't gone off. Your phone hasn't gone off. Mike's phone hasn't gone off. As for Christmas shopping, I showed him how to shop online" "That's him, I was asking about you" He was trying to find something perfect and it was yet to happen... "I'm getting there" "Levi..." "What the fuck do you want from me Erwin!? I'm trying my fucking hardest. They won't give me time off work. Eren needs constant attention or he'll push himself too hard. The pup's going to be here by the end of the month and I'm fucking exhausted. So just back the fuck off" Pulling off to the side of the road. Erwin climbed from the ambulance. Walking around, he opened the passenger side door "Get out" "What?" "Get out" "Why the fuck would do I do that?" "Just get out already" Cursing Erwin, Levi nearly whimpered as he jumped down from the ambiance. He was so fucking tired that everything fucking hurt. Pulling out his cigarettes, Erwin pulled two from the pack, lighting them both before handing him one "What?" "You fucking need it" "What I need is more fucking time between now and Eren going into labour" "Give him a call" "What?" "Call him and let him know you'll be home late" "He'll worry..." "And you'll explode if you keep up like this" "I don't have a fucking choice" Choking on the smoke filling his lungs, he was pretty sure the cigarette wasn't solving any off his issues, but fuck... it helped "Then I'll call him" "No. It's fine" "It's not fine. You're working yourself into..." "Give it rest" "What would Eren think?" "Erwin, I'm fucking warning you. I have a headache the size of your fucking ego" Erwin let him finish cigarette, before starting again "I'm just saying. Eren would be disappointed to see you like this. You don't have to try do this alone" "I can't fucking do anything about it. Work won't give me time off. I'm supposed to be starting parental leave next week, but that isn't happening either. And that's been booked since I came back to work" "Levi. Just stop and take a breath" "I don't have time to" "You're going to burn yourself out. What if Eren..." Erwin was sounding like a broken record. Sick of it, he opened he passenger side door, only for Erwin to stop him half way up his step. Pulled down, he growled, kicking out. Erwin gut punching him as he went... both alpha's dropping each other, because by some miracle, his foot had found Erwin's balls. Glaring at each other, Erwin was the first to crack. Starting to laugh, he clutched his crotch with a whimper "Fuck" "You asked for it" Levi felt like he was drooling like an idiot "You need to slow down" "Pup's aren't cheap" "No. But what's Eren going to do if you work yourself into a heart attack" "Then tell me what to do" "I'll talk to human resources. Give Eren a call and let him know you'll be a little late" "Fine... fuck. Between that punch and that cigarette, I would say you're trying to do me in" "I'll be nice and let you recover before you call him" "Fuck you" "Nah. You've got Eren for that" "That's true..." He didn't regret the smugness that bled into his tone. Erwin and Mike night have an open relationship of sorts, but what he had with Eren... that was something he'd never be able to put into words. Even though he'd been partially regretting the night before, one thought of Eren's dripping opening... and fuck. He wanted to be fucking buried balls deep in him. Recovered enough to crawl back into the ambulance, Levi pulled out his phone. Erwin watching as he opened up Eren's contact details and called his mate. It took a few moments before Eren answered "Levi. What's wrong?" Eren's voice was shaking "Oh. Nothing. I was just ringing to see if you're ok" "I'm ok. I was hoping you'd ring. I'm just sitting under that flocked blanket..." Eren sounded pained... he was emphasising words as in moaning in pain, without the actual moaning. Levi drew his brow in concern "Are you alright? You don't sound alright" "Like I said, I was hoping you'd ring. I really like this flocked blanket... but more importantly, what time are you getting home?" "Oh... I'm going to be a little late" "Ok. Cool. I got my first Christmas delivery today. I wasn't expecting it. But if you're going to be late, I guess it can wait" His omega was being weird "Eren. Are you sure everything's ok?" "Yeah. Take your time coming home. I know what you're like, jumping the gun and all. I love you" "I love you too" The call ended. Levi still frowning deeply "What is it? What's wrong?" "Something's off with Eren" Erwin sighed "You're probably being paranoid" "I don't know..." "What did he say?" "That he was hoping I'd ring and that he's sitting under his flocked blanket" "That doesn't sound like anything to worry about" "It's the way he said it, like he was in pain. Then he told me not to jump the gun on the way home" "We can call by, if you want?" "No. No. He said he got a Christmas delivery today. He's probably being weird because of that" "It was just weird. He started talking about how he liked his flocked blanket. He said it twice..." "Look. He probably just forgot he'd mentioned it" Levi wasn't sure. Something felt off... "It's fine. He's too swollen for that" In more ways than one. Eren's back had been tender for a long time now. Maybe he had just been trying to hide how uncomfortable he really was, so that Levi wouldn't worry? If so, he'd done a fucking shit job of it. Work unfortunately picked up, and Levi swore they'd been called to the exact same house the previous year, for the exact same reason. People can't hang Christmas lights without getting the urge to throw themselves off their own roof. It was fucking frustrating. Though he'd told Erwin he'd take some time at the end of his shift, he couldn't be fucking bothered. Even if it meant possibly snapping at Eren, he was far too tired. He just wanted a fucking shower and to collapse in bed for a year. Or at least until Eren went into labour. He could barely keep his eyes open. The lights of Shinganshima seemed blinding to his poor sensitive eyes.

WIP

Last weekend’s project was a personal favorite of mine. I’ve blogged before about Burgundian Gowns when I wrote about the DOTW French Court Barbie. They’re my favorite 15th Century style. It was nice to go back to history for a weekend, while we waited for some other fabrics to arrive. Though, TBH, this design has been in my mind for a long time as part of our LOTR Costume Project. It’s something I see the Princesses of Emyn Arnen wearing at some point in the Fourth Age. But this is my headcanon speaking and not actual Legendarium chronology by any means.

1 - Research

That’s easy. I’ve been researching and hoarding images of Burgundian Gowns since forever.

These are just some images out of my research. They teach us two things about Burgundian Gowns: The partlet usually comes in contrasting colors, and Burgundian Gown are always accompanied by a very specific headgear: the hennin. So, to complete my doll’s look, I made one too.

2 - Sewing Process and Results:

For my Burgundian outfit, I’ve chosen the conical hennin, more common around the 1430′s. I also love the truncated hennin, but I want a truncated hennin in darker colors, and since I’m going for light colors here, and for a “fairytale princess” look...

As far as color references are concerned, Burgundian Gowns’ paintings often show them in darker tones, jewel tones, or black. But I went out of what’s shown in sources and made a Burgundian out of the same taffeta I used for the last Sideless Gown mock up we’ve shown some weeks ago. The plastron was done in the same green silk as the Sideless Gown’s bust. But as you’ll notice in some pictures, I’ve forgotten to stiffen the silk properly by adding a buckram layer to the lining. Ugh. Things that lack of time do to my brains...

The hennin also didn’t get as good as I wanted. It ended up not covering the doll’s hair properly. It needed to be larger to accomodate the hair inside and still go down to where it should be on the doll’s head. A modern doll’s hairline is different than what was fashionable in the 15th Century - a more receded style, that you can see in the research pictures above. Think Faye Dunaway in “The Messenger” (1999).

In order to achieve that look I needed to have sewn a larger hennin, that would fit the doll’s hair inside and still come further down on her head, and I also needed to add lappets to it. But I forgot. The original pattern in “Patterns For Theatrical Costumes” lacks them. But I knew that “Patterns for Theatrical Cosumes” is not a source of historically accurate patterns and I knew I needed to design the lappets to build them into the hennin pattern provided by the book. And still I forgot to do it. I’m very sorry about that guys. I’ll do better next time around.

And here comes the tricky part: Most Burgundians I’ve ever seen have fur details at the neckline, wrists and/or hem. That is actually because these dreses were lined in fur. Sometimes in all these places, sometimes in two out of three. But fur (faux or real, though I’ll never use real fur for anything in my life) gets too brute and too big for the proper scale on a 12 inch doll if you’re not sewing something big like a cloak with a large shawl collar, or a hippie fur-vest. But there’s a trick that works pretty well in these moments: velvet. It’s “furry” enough and small enough to look in scale. And I had just the right caramel shade to go well with eggshell and green!

Here are the results! As always, this is a modern doll, so please forgive the smoky eye and blue eye shadow. It’s not period and it feels misplaced. I’m working on gettin more “period adequate” dolls for our photoshoots.

Kadie Smith Finds Her Passion For Design During a Career Day in High School (DOTW#5)

We’re super excited to continue our series of interviews “Designer of the Week” with an amazing and passionate designer, Kadie Smith. Webdesignledger: Kadie, at Webdesignledger we’ve been very impressed with your work and we decided that we want to get to know you better. Please tell us five characteristics you want people to know about you when they first meet you. Kadie: Thank you! If I were to meet someone for the first time, I would want them to know that I’m sincere, a good listener, observant, enjoy brainstorming creative ideas, and love collaboration. Webdesignledger: When did you discover your passion for design? What originally made you want to become a graphic designer? Kadie: I found out I was passionate about graphic design when shadowing a family friend who owned a branding agency for career day in high school. The thing I loved most about graphic design was the visual organization and editing process. I never quite felt like a pure artist, but as a designer, I loved creative problem-solving and that it was rooted in an understanding of communication. Webdesignledger: Your agency offers a wide range of design (branding, logo design, brand development, marketing graphics, brand experience, creative direction, lettering, illustration, layouts). Which of these branches offers you the most satisfaction as a graphic designer? Kadie: I find the most satisfaction (personally) in the branding process. I enjoy building a personal relationship with new clients and walking through the whole evolution of the brand from start to finish. In this process, design becomes an opportunity for my client to express their dreams and ambitions and translate their passion for their business in their style and visual communication. From there, my team and I get to play and see just how far we can extend a brand’s experience and create opportunities to add a personal touch to the brand’s growth and development over time with different visual elements. Webdesignledger: What are the top three fonts you love and use the most? Kadie: My favorite go-to fonts are Coromant, Gotham, and Garamond. Webdesignledger: Every designer has at least one project that he/she is very proud of. What is the project that has the most emotional value to you, that helped you express your style the most? Kadie: My favorite project to date is Bossladies Magazine. Chelsea came to me right after Volumen One released and she unexpectedly built a large following. We worked for a year together putting together issues two and three as our friendship and mutual trust grew. After issue three, Chelsea gave me the green light to rebrand the magazine and I had never felt such a personal connection to a branding project, having worked with the client for so long before getting to start the process. It became an extension of my own style since I had come to identify so closely with the heart and mission of the magazine, and was the most rewarding experience I’ve had in a branding project. Webdesignledger: We love the way you organize your portfolio and take time to give all the details describing your clients’ business. We understand that the designer-client relationship is important to you. Have you ever disagreed with the client’s feedback? How did you handle it? Kadie: I have! I think almost every designer has at one time or another. When I was just starting out, I felt so personally tied to my designs that I had a hard time understanding feedback and became really disappointed if the project went in a direction I wasn’t excited about. Now, I first take time to try to understand the root of the feedback – is it a misunderstanding? different style preference? fear? My role as a brand designer is to communicate my client’s vision for the company, not to create my own version of their business, so I try to keep as much of my personal bias in check as I can. Sure, I want the end result to be beautiful, but I also want it to resonate with my client and give them passion and confidence to take ownership of their brand. If I feel like their feedback is rooted in a genuine lack of understanding or fear of taking a risk, I try to work through those fears and uncertainties with them as a co-collaborator. If it’s merely a different style preference, I do my best to execute their style and vision for the brand as best I can! Webdesignledger: If you could choose the era you were born in, what other century would you choose design-wise? Kadie: Design-wise, I would love to be in the Art Deco era! I love the typography from that period in design and still take so much inspiration from the way they pushed the limits of traditional letterforms. Webdesignledger: Being your own boss comes with many responsibilities. Do you use a certain time or project management software to make your workflow smoother? Kadie: Asana has really helped my team workflow, but personally I am still so old school and just use my Moleskine planner! I need to be better at being more digital (my project manager would love it if I was!) but I’ve found I always gravitate back to pen and paper. Webdesignledger: Describe your creative process. What are the major steps? Do you follow a certain routine? Kadie: I do have a creative routine. I start with extensive time in the discovery phase, asking lots of questions, researching ideas and putting together mood boards, meeting with my client, and making sure I understand their style and brand message as best I can before designing. Once I start designing, I try to keep the options pretty minimal to help with decision paralysis. I spend time explaining why I’ve developed each concept and how I see it developing. Once a design concept/direction is selected, I build it out and refine the design, adding mockups and additional visual elements to create a full experience. Then we start the revision phase to further refine and perfect the design to make sure it’s ready to launch! Webdesignledger: Are you currently working on a project? How is it coming together? Kadie: We are currently working on several projects! This month, we’re working on branding for a children’s clothing brand, an interior design firm, a fertility specialist, a travel agency, a financial firm, an elementary school, and an app for wedding photographers, as well as some packaging and illustration projects. We stay busy, but we have fun! Webdesignledger: What is something new that you learned as a designer in your past experience (jobs & internships)? Kadie: I have learned so much about discipline, creating buffer in timelines (at least 40% for all the unexpected mishaps and creative blocks!), and the importance of forming relationships in the design and local community. Webdesignledger: What advice would you give to a new designer? Kadie: I would tell a new designer to work on lots of different projects before settling in on the type of design they want to do. And then keep experimenting! Reach outside of your comfort zone to try different creative hobbies to spark your inspiration. Often it’s when I’m painting, collaging, or sewing that I’ll think of a solution for a logo or come up with a color palette for a client. Develop a broad skill set and form lots of relationships – go to events and conferences, reach out to designers you admire online, and join online groups and forums.
