In honor of the 10th anniversary of one of the best dubs ever made this year, as of today, I created this
"One Second of Every Episode of Doraemon: Gadget Cat From The Future" ever, plus two from the Stand By Me 1 and 2 movies on Netflix.

On this day, 10 years ago, on July 7th, 2014, "Doraemon: Gadget Cat from the Future" made its official US premiere on @disneyxd with the first episode (containing the segments "All the Way From the Future World" & "The Mecha-Maker")!
Tumblr media
It was an English dub adaptation of the third "Doraemon" anime series, running since April of 2005 and still going strong! (with 700+ episodes as of July 2024)
Tumblr media
The dub had an incredibly high profile set of voice actors, starring Mona Marshall, Johnny Yong Bosch, Cassandra Lee Morris, Brian Beacock, and Kaiji Tang as the leads (Doraemon, Nobita/"Noby", Shizuka/"Sue", Suneo/"Sneech", and Takeshi "Gian"/"Big G"), with Mari Devon, Tony Oliver, Max Mittelman, Keith Silverstein, Spike Spencer, Minae Noji, Kirk Thornton, Cristina Vee playing the reoccuring set of secondary cast of the show's characters.
Tumblr media
The show centered around the life of a misfortunate boy named Nobita "Noby" Nobi who suffers from bad grades, bullying from his peers, scolding from his parents (his ferocious mom mainly), and is generally an awkward, lazy, kinda weird, and slow kid.
Tumblr media
A robotic cat from the 22nd century named Doraemon is sent back in time to aid Noby in his life, pulling out futuristic magical gadgets from his pocket that can turn everyday human life into something much more every day.
Hijinks ensue when Noby ends up misusing Doraemon's gadgets, often continuously using them for his selfish (or selfless sometimes) benefits until things get incredibly out of control either through inconveniences, bullies, or just... really really poor choices.
Occasionally every now and then, the show has little half hour adventures, such as Noby & the gang helping a group of little people ("A Little Adventure"), Doraemon & Noby seeing aliens ("Invasion of the Goat Aliens", "Doraemon and the Space Shooters"), Doraemon & Noby going after a time capsule ("Doraemon's Time Capsule"), escaping from a villian from the future ("A Visitor from the Future"), but generally overall, the show is incredibly episodic and formulaic with the premise listed above.
Tumblr media
The dub made numerous edits to the source material such as having the show's setting take place in a random no-name town in America instead of Japan, changing Japanese yen to American currency, removing content, motifying the character Shizuka's personality due to American viewers misunderstanding or getting confused over her original traits, etc.
Tumblr media
The cast of characters were also given Americanized names, though these are confirmed to be just nicknames, with it being implied that they still have their original names in media such as Stand By Me Doraemon 2 (the English dub) & in the English manga.
Tumblr media
It ran for a total of 52 episodes (with two 11 minute segments each with the exception of a few half hour specials that were dubbed, especially by season two) across two seasons from July 7th, 2014 to September 1st, 2015, being seemingly cancelled or sidelined by Disney quietly, with no official answer on the status of the dub.
According to Sneech Honekawa voice actor Brian Beacock via his TikTok on a stream from around 2020, Disney lost interest and didn't want to continue pushing the series.
Tumblr media
The show continued to air in reruns after the conclusion of the second season on Disney XD until on June 20th, 2018, it got preempted by a rerun of Phineas & Ferb and has never aired again nor been seen again on American television (photo above courtesy of Collin LW)
And sadly, as of 2024, there seem to be no plans to officially re-release the dub via formats, as its not on DVD and Blu-ray nor is it available on watch on major streaming services with anime like Netflix, Disney+, Hulu, or Crunchyroll.
Though thankfully, thanks to the efforts of an unknown to my head right now fan, the entire English dub's episodes in 1080p logoless quality (ripped from "Watch Disney XD" before being removed) is currently available to watch online on Archive.org (& MEGA), being helped made widespread by Doraemon US superfan & voice actor Collin LW!
Despite receiving some particularly heavy negative reception from several fans of the original Japanese dub over the years since its existence came to be, the dub has generally received positive feedback from those who saw it, especially from its devoted cult following. Particularly for the voice cast's performances, heartfelt moments, the cute cartoony artstyle, the fun cast of characters, the original soundtrack by Joseph Bauer, and the sense of witty hilarious humor that's been favorably compared to the likes of the 4Kids dubs of the "Pokemon" anime from the 1990s and 2000s.
Tumblr media
(What are your own personal thoughts on the dub? I'd love to hear in the replies and reblogs on your personal views and experiences on the series!)
Tumblr media
Again, happy tenth anniversary "Doraemon: Gadget Cat from the Future"!
Thanks to everyone who worked to make this dub possible and exposing so much people to this wonderful, timeless, underrated goofy, silly, heartfelt little show!
Still hope we get more of the dub via either a dub of one of the mainline movies (cough cough Doraemon: Nobita's Earth Symphony cough cough) or maybe another dose of the 2005 series somehow on Netflix after their Stand By Me Doraemon 2 release in 2021 ^^

My first anime was the 2014 English Dub of Doraemon
Tumblr media
I saw this BEFORE Pokémon & Yo-Kai Watch
I don't even know if anyone in Tumblr remembers this besides the small YouTube fandom it had around 2016
That post about death note being "everyone's first anime" (untrue statement) made me curious and now I want to gather data for science
Can you reblog this and tell me where are you from and what was your starter anime?

"South Park is a fatphobic and M&T are full of shit" isn't a really hot take i guess BUUT it's very bizzarre to me that Cartman's physical weakness is often linked to his fatness if not it being its cause because where i come from if you are slighty overweight boy not only you are considered a mini hercule you WILL be treated like a mule anytime "strong arms" are needed...
Honestly I think this is actually just a very very american kind of fatphobia, absolutely not a single media made outside USA, anime, books, TV series i ever touched implies that being fat makes you physically weak, it's the opposite most of the time, just look at Gian from Doraemon, he is the most iconic fat anime character of all times and he is a big, dumb, mean bully who tears apart everything in way with his sheer strenght, and he is big eater with big heart and big belly, idk man americans are so fucking weird
But also in TFBW he and Mysterion have very the high strenght while the rest of M5 have very low value regarding that, these jock/nerd dichotomies works in mysterious ways

After its debut in North America, Disney and TV Asahi did something weird. They took the English dub of Doraemon and released it in Japan with Japanese voices replacing the English ones. And it's only the voice work that changed. All the localization changes, the new soundtrack, the opening and ending, all of it is intact.
All of this reminds me of what happened with Super Mario Bros. 2. Nintendo took a Japan-exclusive game, localized it internationally as the sequel to Super Mario Bros., and then re-released it in Japan as Super Mario USA right after they released the Super Famicom. At least with Doraemon, there were a few changes made to accommodate the new audience.
I'm curious about this dub. I could never find any episodes of it online when I was younger. But hopefully all of that has changed by now.

Okay, since you've mentioned Doraemon, I must know your opinions about it!
Oh, that one's also my all-time fave! My first time hearing of this series ever was in a Mega Drive video game, and the rest was history:
youtube
I remember reading more of the manga than watching the anime, but I enjoy both formats equally. It's an absolute success in Japan even after its author's passing, and has served as art inspo for Sonic the Hedgehog's original/classic self (Sonic's design was based on Mickey Mouse, Felix the Cat and Doraemon; he was all circles and curves, just so he could be easily drawn by children).
Many people categorize him as a magical cat, but he doesn't use magic; his gadgets are purely advanced science (though there was an episode where Doraemon and Nobita help Shizuka live her magical girl fantasy, and they've tried to work around the lack of magic).
"But, Bunny! If Doraemon is a cat, how come he doesn't have ears?" A-ha! That's when it comes the plot twist! Doraemon comes from a network of helping cat robots from the future that are yellow-painted and have cat ears... turns out that poor Dora had his ears eaten away by mice and he was so sad that he cried so hard that the yellow paint melted away from his body and he's now blue; he now fears rodents ever since this traumatic incident.
And there are also several other Doras: There's Dorami (his younger sister who occasionally visits him from the future), the Mini-Doras (a pint-sized trio of Doras in red, green and yellow), and the Doraemons (a team of six international Doras coming from Russia, USA, China, Spain, India and Brazil).
Oh, and I also wanna try eating a dorayaki someday. It's a sweet pancake bun with azuki (red bean paste) filling, much like the taiyaki (fish-shaped cake). Even though azuki is a common choice for filling, there are other options, such as chocolate for example. There's even an Oreo-flavored dorayaki recipe:

Asian meals and treats are just so mesmerizing to me.

Where to Find Doraemon in English
Without a doubt, one of the main reasons that Doraemon is generally unknown in the English-speaking world is that most of the franchise is not widely available in English. However, English versions of some Doraemon media do exist, and in this post I will review how to obtain several of them. The “core components” of the franchise considered here are the original manga (1969–1996), the classic anime series (1979–2005), and the rebooted anime series (2005–present).
A selection of Doraemon manga chapters have been translated into English as a 10-volume series. These volumes were released as educational material to help Japanese speakers learn English, so they also include the original Japanese text printed above the manga panels. All the volumes in the series can be ordered from Japanese Amazon, which does ship internationally, at least to many places.
Tumblr media
A second English series of selected manga chapters has been released in a similar format, though this time as six volumes and organized by specific themes. The stories compiled in this series do not overlap with those in the previous one, so both can be read without encountering any duplicate chapters. These volumes can also be ordered from Japanese Amazon.
Tumblr media
An even greater range of manga chapters has actually been localized into English... however, these are only available on Kindle in the United States and Canada.
Tumblr media
An English dub of the 2005 anime series aired in the USA between 2014–2015, covering 95 individual stories (52 half-hour episodes). It has not been officially released on home media or streaming services, but can be found archived online. From what little I’ve seen, the dubbing itself appears to be reasonably well done, though it should be noted that this dub contains numerous edits meant to "Americanize" the content, so it is quite heavily modified from the Japanese original.
Tumblr media
A different English dub of the 2005 series aired in the UK between 2015–2016. It includes some episodes that were not adapted for the American dub (and vice versa). However, it has not been released on home media either and many of the episodes are currently lost, which I find surprising given how recently it was on air. In fact, the complete list of episodes it includes is apparently unconfirmed, though it has been inferred that it most likely consists of the first 26 episodes from the Japanese version. In any case, surviving episodes from this dub have been archived online. I also haven’t watched much of it, but the voices seem fine and it contains far fewer edits to the original material compared to the US dub. As far as official Doraemon English dubs with accessible full episodes go, this one is probably the most faithful to the Japanese version. (It even dubbed the theme song!)
Tumblr media
Two movies, Stand by Me Doraemon and Stand by Me Doraemon 2, are currently on at least American and British Netflix with English dubbing (featuring the voice cast from the US English dub) and subtitling available. I’m not the biggest fan of these films (especially the first one) and don’t recommend them as an entry point into the franchise, though plenty of Doraemon fans would probably disagree with me on that point.
Tumblr media
Despite the relative obscurity of Doraemon in most of the Anglosphere, there is actually a long and complex history of Doraemon English media beyond what I’ve described above. If you’re interested in learning more, here is a detailed video series on that subject!
As for unofficial translations, all I’ll say is that fanmade English subtitles of variable quality exist for the remaining Doraemon movies (excepting this year’s movie that, as of the time of writing, was just released in Japanese theaters) and some episodes of both the 1979 and 2005 series. There are even fanmade English dubs of a few episodes out there. However, numerous episodes (especially from the 1979 series) remain unavailable in English in any capacity. Maybe one day...

Note
unfortunately most doraemon fanworks are not in english
This!! The thing is, Doraemon was never widely advertised in the USA, so a majority of the English speaking community have never watched it, and therefore never wrote any fics on it
But I'm having a hard time finding fics in other languages as well, mainly because I'm not sure where to look

Resumen Creator Reunion File vol. 4 - Takashi Iizuka [Beep21]
Sus juegos favoritos eran los de aventura, destacando The Portopia Serial Murder Case y Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom.
Después de varias ideas, surgió NiGHTS into Dreams.

PC Engine - Doraemon Meikyu Daisakusen (Crater Maze)
Title: Doraemon Meikyu Daisakusen /
Developer/Publisher: TSG / Nichibutsu / Hudson Soft
Release date: 31 October 1989
Catalogue No.: HC89023
Genre: Action
Format: HuCard
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is actually a variant based on Nichibutsu's coin-op arcade Kid no Hore Hore Daisakusen which in turn was actually based on 1979's most influential game of all time, Heiankyo Alien which was actually developed by The University of Tokyo's Theoretical Science Group. Heiankyo Alien also saw a conversion to the likes of the Commodore VIC-20 and the Game Boy. Kid no Hore Hore Daisakusen also made its way to the Famicom, and this PC Engine game actually made it the USA under the name "Cratermaze" stripping out the Doraemon license since most people in America were a little fearful of Japanese anything.
This Doraemon game is a sort of Bomber Man in reverse. Instead of planting bombs, you dig holes in the ground to trap enemies then fill them in to finish them off. The game has a couple of difficulty settings, the harder providing more moving enemies to avoid or trap. There is a selection of levels that alternate for variety (there are 60 levels in total), and the occasional boss is thrown in for good measure.
