hi! hm. i mean i feel that was also the point that he was the underdog and the lesser montague though? even in comparison with the actors who played romeo and prince escalus, you're meant to just be like "eh, i guess he's alright" so he grows on you as he grows on rose. its a whole separate conversation that benvolio is white and his love-rival for rose was Escalus, a Black man. but for me, it worked that he was kinda just Some Guy compared to everyone else in the cast. plus, i LOVED Wade Briggs' performance and he and lashana had some of the best chemistry i've ever seen. but hey, to each their own! i can definitely see your point that anyone seems unworthy next to lashana's beauty, but rosaline deserved to be with someone who fkn ADORED her the way benvolio did. x

I want to get into Retj, but I don't know where to start! I'm American and I'm used to one shoddily filmed bootleg, maybe a professionally filmed show twenty years later, not several professionally filmed productions with each country getting its own version. There are so many I don't know what to do! What version would you recommend starting with?

Oh man thank you for the trust lol I warn you I have very little taste/artistic sense so this is going to be mostly based on nothing. I'm very glad you want to get into retj, a beautiful musical with a lovely fandom though it IS confusing xD 

So, the order I went with was 2001 French --> Italian --> Hungarian --> Revival -->  Russian ---> Austrian --> Takarazuka/Japanese + some snippets of other less known ones out of curiosity mostly. (In my defense I had trouble with college this year and therefore had norhing to lmao) The ones I recommend starting with are the 

- French original:  more colorful, romantic, soft dreamy aesthetic,  It's hard for me to describe since it's sort of the default the other ones get compared to, but its truly lovely and has a an excellent music quality and a very adorable young cast (especially love the two leads and Benvolio), to be found here but the song subtitles are very bad, however you get the sense (you can find a playlist of the songs separate from the dialogue if you search Romeo et Juliette subtitles though): https://youtu.be/xi21XHWV0D4

- Hungarian: awesome post apocalyptic aesthetic, everything is kinda overrly edgy but man can these guys pull it off, best Tybalt, best Mercutio, best Romeo if you want a thougher-but-still-emotional guy rather than a cute innocent puppy (I really dont but still loved him and the very Sassy and Done Juliet), a lot of Capulet family dysfunction which personally is my bread and butter, there are lots of weird choices which however will not seem so weird if it's your first time. https://youtu.be/ikESnkpQBR8

The other subtitled production easily available (as a playlist incpuding songs and dialogue) is the Austrian, Romeo und Julia. Now this one I have never been so passionate about, but It's mostly because I am mostly invested in Tybalt and Benvolio which are here not to my taste. BUT it's totally worth  watching too, mostly because it's a real shame to miss the most adorable, sassy, Tired TM and deeply tragic and compassionate Prince Escalus this continent has to offer, and già famous leather jacket. The aesthetic is also very nice, fluffier and more fairy tale like than the french, Juliet so sassy and excitable and Romeo very bouncy and intense and with a touch of screamy little emo. Totally shippable. 

Others are the French revival (the one you see the most fanart for, mostly bc a lot of shipping bait between Mercutio and Tybalt was present, which however don't recommend to start with because there changes in tbe songs I don't think anyone likes and not really a pot of chemistry between the leads and a somewhat weird aesthetic, but you can totally go back to it later) the recent Italian production, Romeo e Giulietta ama e cambia il mondo  (there is a subbed version available at @cto10121 and a playlist on Youtube with a better Romeo but no subs. Don't recommend to start with bc somewhat overrly edgy and very sexual and also the same bad song choices of the revival, but definitely recommend watching bc the costumes are so gorgeous, realistic and colorful and everyone's characterization is so interesting and intense, I adore Prince Escalus, Benvolio and Juliet and also Tybalt and Mercutio are very deranged and aesthetically pleasing) and the Takarazuka version, all' ladies and aesthetically gorgeous and with very different song order,also available to download at @cto10121. Oh and the Russian, my almost favorite, but there are no subs and it's very similar to the French so really watch only of you get very invested. There are a few changes but mostly in lyrics/dialogue which is very different, visually there are just some changed scenes which are all' very nice and obviously the cast is mostly wonderful - Romeo and Juliet are two literal angels, less swept up in their romance and more all' around pure souls, Mercutio such an adorable tiny fighty gremlin and it will pass to history as the production where I managed to crush on 5 out of 5 Capulets lmao what a pro. Also it"s imho very nice re:Tybalt/Mercutio vibes, though it IS my speciality to see vibes only where there aren't any so maybe I'm mistaken.
