Warning: spoilers ahead for the Cyclops Chapter of Epic the Musical, content warnings include: death (major character), spoilers, graphic descriptions of blood/injury
Thank you for your patience.
~~~
Leo stares in absolute shock as the blood drips, the pours from the crush wound sustained by his brother, Don.
Don's eyes are wide, frightened. "C-Captain-" he stutters. Then, in a second, it's over, and Don drops lifelessly to the floor. His eyes go dull, flat, and his expressive face shutters closed and stays that way. A bright light of the world gone as the blood pools beneath his skull and drips off rock and dirt. His skull breaks open, his brain exposed beneath, and Leo feels sick.
More thuds echo around him, more of his men dropping like flies, but Leo only has eyes for the body in front of him with blood and brain still dribbling from his skull.
"Head wounds bleed more than other wounds," Don had told him once.
Leo hits his knees before his brother's body. He cares little for his crew, still screaming for him for orders, for assistance, for him to save them. He doesn't care about the Cyclops and the orders that the beast echoes, twisting them to suit his thoughts. All he cares about is Don.
Beautiful, brilliant Don, who'd caught the attention of the god Hephestus and became his patron at the age of five years old. Don's creations out of little more than paperclips and building blocks made of wood had progressed until he was coming up with defense systems at fifteen years old, regardless of what their father said. Don, who'd repeatedly told Leo to greet the world with open arms instead of a sword. "The world already knows King Leonardo of Ithica was deadly," he'd teased, "they don't need it shoved into their faces." Don, who was now dead because Leo had asked him to go with him into this cave knowing it could be a trap. Don, who followed Leo into battle with the Trojans and slaughtered the vile people of that city at Leo's command.
Don, who'd sent letters back home to his beloved Miyamoto Usagi of Japan. Oh, gods, what's Leo going to tell Usagi? Shit, what is Leo going to tell Father and Mikey? Gods above, what is he supposed to tell Don's little boy, Cody?
"Captain!" someone shouts.
There's a loud, but muffled thud somewhere to his right, but Leo can't be bothered to pay attention.
"Captain!" the same man shouts again.
Leo's eyes are only on the body he kneeled before.
Someone grabs his shoulders and forces him away from Don's body. He stares into the eyes of his brother, Raphael. "Leo!" Raph snaps. "Stop looking at him! We need a leader, I need your head in the game!"
Leo blinks. Twice, three times, then he stands. He takes stock of who's left. Of the men he'd brought into the cave, sixteen are now dead. Raph's body has gained a faint red glow, a blessing from his patron god Ares. He'll be indestructible for the foreseeable future.
Leo glances over, the Cyclops has fallen unconscious in front of the exit. Anger breaks through the fog of grief and shock. Blazing anger, burning anger, that lights his body on fire and demands retribution for the lives stolen from him. Leo breathes out heavily, then nods. "We must move quickly. We don't have much time. The Cyclops was too busy gloating to notice I mixed lotus in the wine I gave him." He sees the crestfallen faces of his crew and states, "Mark my words, crew, this is not the end."
"But, Captain," one protests quietly, stepping away from a headless corpse, Honeycutt by the looks of the tattoos on the corpse's arms. "What do we do about our fallen friends?"
Leo wishes he could take them all, but he's already going to be pushing it. "Remember them," he replies. "When the fire begins to fade, for the fallen and afraid. We are not to let them die in vain. We're the ones who carry on the flames of those who've gone. Our comrades, your Prince, will not die in vain! Remember them."
The crew members nod, looking to Leo for their orders.
"Raph," Leo orders, "Get his club. I want everyone to sharpen it, all swords on the end, to turn it into a giant spear!"
"Should we kill him?" asks Michael, angrily gripping his sword as if to prepare.
Leo shakes his head. "No, his body is blocking the path. If we kill him we'll be trapped inside."
"Captain," Raph introjects, stepping carefully over the body of his twin brother. He hefts the club behind him and lets it fall with a loud clatter. "Where do we attack him?"
Leo looks at the Cyclops, contemplates the neck to let him bleed out slowly. Then his eyes travel further up, and he smiles wickedly. "We've gotta stab him in the eye!" he demands.
"Yes, sir!" The crew calls back affirmatives, unsheathing their swords and taking them to the club. Leo lets them work, choosing to move Don's body away from the fight so they may take him later when they leave. In a matter of minutes, the club has been whittled away to a long and thin spear. Seconds later, the Cyclops begins to stir, low growling noises slipping from its gaping maw.
"Now!" Leo shouts, taking up the spear.
Raph grabs the wood behind him, followed by the rest of the crew and together they lift the spear and shove it directly into the Cyclops' red eye. The Cyclops roars in pain, hands snapping up as body jack knives off the ground.
"Scatter!" Leo demands. Immediately, the crew runs in all different directions, heading for the outskirts of the Cyclops' reach.
The Cyclops paws at his eye, blood squirting from the flesh of it around the spear's wound. The beast reaches up and pulls it out with a pathetic whimper. Leo scoffs at the sight. 'Not so tough when you're the one in danger, are you?' he thinks furiously.
The Cyclops roars again, blood pooling in deep puddles on his skin and minimal clothing.
"Who hurts you?" comes new voices from the back of the cave as heavy footsteps shake the ground. "Who hurts you?"
Two more Cyclopses come from the yawning void Leo had thought led to the cave's end. They stomp on the ground as they come closer, disheveled and obviously unhappy to have been woken.
"There are more of them?" Raph whispers, horrified.
Leo, however, has a different thought. "Hide," he hisses to his men. Once they're all out of sight, Leo grabs Don's body and disappears into the shadows himself.
"Who hurts you," the Cyclopses demand of the still whimpering one.
"Captain," Raph says, "we should run!"
"Wait," Leo cautions.
"Who hurts you?"
"Captain, please!" Raph begs a little louder.
"Wait!" Leo hisses back sharply, hands tightening on Don's body.
"It was Nobody!" The first Cyclops wails. "It was Nobody!"
The other two Cyclops are unimpressed, ignoring his injuries and snarling, "If nobody hurts you be silent!" They stomp off back to the depths of the cave.
"Don't go!" pleads the first Cyclops.
Leo watches the pair leave, then turns his eyes to the first Cyclops. Vindication floods his body, driving his anger away. "Let's grab the sheep and away we go," he says to his crew.
The crew moves immediately to do as he says. Leo rips off his blue sash and kneels down to fold it around Don's broken skull. He can't bring home everyone, but his father, brother, brother-in-law, and nephew deserve to bury their loved one. He can risk it for this.
With Don's head no longer leaking, Leo raises the broken body and slings it over his shoulder. That done, he grips one of Don's strong wrists and frail ankles in one hand and begins to leave the cave. As he passes the sobbing Cyclops, time slows to a stop, and from out of nowhere, out steps Leo's patron goddess herself.
"Have you forgotten the lessons I taught you?" she demands haughtily. "He's still a threat until he's dead."
"My lady," Leo says respectfully. "My foe is blind, my brother is dead, the blood we spill is never dried. If this is what it means to be your warrior, I do not want it."
Athena raises a graceful eyebrow. She opens her mouth, then pauses and nods. "Very well," she replies. "But a warning," she continues. "Hephestus will come after me, he is less forgiving."
"Will it bother you shoulder I accept, my lady?" Leo asks, knuckles glowing white against his grip on his brother.
Athena stoops to Leo's level. "Either way, your foe will be dead, and I will be pleased. You are my champion," she tells him, "to lose you would be a waste. Be quick, whatever you choose. Your journey is not over." And with that, she is gone.
True to her word, Hephestus replaces Athena mere seconds later. He takes a long look at his fallen devotee. Don's body is still warm, burning a brand into Leo's back. "My lord Hephestus," Leo greets, dipping his head.
Hephestus grumbles. "All the work I did to protect that boy, and he goes and gets himself hurt," he growls. With a snarl, he turns to the crying cyclops. "This the brute?" he demands.
"That's him," Leo confirms, running a thumb over Don's ankle.
Hephestus growls again. "Boy, you may have your retribution, but my vengeance is still to be exacted." He looks at Leo with his good eye, the bad one keeping a careful watch on the injured cyclops. "I'd do it myself, but he's one of Posiedon's. So, I need you to do it for me."
Leo hesitates. "My lord," he says. "With all possible respect, he's blinded. Is this not enough?"
Hephestus snaps, "If it were I wouldn't be here!"
Leo flinches back, unused to this type of anger. Fire licks at his legs, though none is visible. Leo can smell brimstone and ash, tickling sparks flickering at his nose. If this was how the god expressed his fury, Leo wondered how Don had dealt with it so well. Then again, the twins didn't have to live up to the expectations of Lady Athena.
So, Leo nods. "Yes, my lord," he replies. "Might I put my brother to rest on board the boat first?"
Hephestus visibly softened. After several minutes of silence, he speaks. "He was my favorite, you know." With a sigh and distraught eyes, Hephestus continues, "I've had many people train under me, many people I've offered assistance to, and so many who've made progress in my name, but him?" The god sighs again, looking away. "Go lay your brother to rest," he allows. "But come back quickly."
Leo nods. "Thank you, my lord." Upon leaving the cave, he calls for Raph. When his brother appears at his side, Leo hands over Don's body. Raph's eyes flood with tears as he gathers his twin into his arms. He doesn't let them fall, refuses to be weak in front of the crew, but it doesn't stop him from having to wipe the tears away.
"Take him below deck and begin the proper prayers. I'll join you shortly."
Raph nods, accepting Leo's order. He's gone as quickly as he appeared. Leo turns back to the cave. To himself, he adds, "No more stops." And truthfully, he means it.
Thank you!
Various pieces of information from the Rise Q&A back in February
It was revealed that there are other Hidden Cities other than the one seen in Rise & there had been plans for the Turtles to visit the Hidden City beneath Tokyo.
Tumblr media
2. Splinter was able to use Leo's mystic odachi so easily due to the fact that Splinter had spent a lot of time in the Hidden City & because of this Splinter has a great deal of mystic knowledge, with Splinter also having developed his mystic abilities but he has stopped using those abilities until the events of the series.
Tumblr media
3. More information was given about the missing Turtle Siblings & it was stated the Frida, Big Mama's Assistant would have most likely joined her brothers during the future timeline, it was also stated that the other missing Turtle Sibling would have possibly been named Camille after Camille Claudel.
Tumblr media
4. When asked on how a Dungeons & Dragons episode would go it was stated that April would be the DM, Raph would be a fighter class, Mikey would be an illusionist, Leo would be an assassin or thief & Donnie would insist on being a scientist since he's sure that there was 'at least one sensible person back then'.
Tumblr media
5. The Rise version of Renet could have possibly been used to explore different timelines that might have happened if certain events in the movie had happened differently.
Tumblr media
6. After the events of the movie Casey is traveling around the world fighting remnants of the Krang & the Foot Clan.
Tumblr media
7. When asked about the Turtle's relationship with Draxum it was stated that in contrast to Mikey who accepted Draxum the most easily, Leo is the most skeptical however it was also stated that Leo would have eventually 'gotten over' his grudge towards Draxum as there were multiple scrapped episodes planned where Leo & Draxum would have been forced to work together.
Tumblr media
8. There were plans for the Turtles to eventually go to the Krang's original dimension meaning that it would have been likely for the Turtles to encounter the traditional dimension X/Z stuff such as the Neutrinos.
Tumblr media
9. When asked about Casey Junior's relationship with the past/ present version of Leo it was stated that despite it being slightly different due to them being around the same age now Casey Junior can't help but still view Leo as a father figure.
Tumblr media
10. It was stated that Splinter has never celebrated the Turtle's Birthdays in the past due to it being to closely related to his negative feelings towards his own mutation however it was also stated that after Splinter's development in the series he would start celebrating the Turtle's Birthday with them.
Tumblr media
11. The reason that the Future Version of Leonardo was the one who raised Casey Junior was stated that it was due to the fact that the Future Version of Leonardo had a special affinity for Casey Junior & also felt particularly responsible for Casey Junior after his mother was gone.
Tumblr media
12. When asked what the Rise version of Miyamoto Usagi would have been like it was revealed that a possible plan for Usagi was that his home dimension would have been overrun by the Krang causing Usagi to travel to the Turtles dimension for help due to them being the only ones who have ever defeated the Krang.
Tumblr media
13. When discussing crossovers between TMNT iterations it was stated that a crossover between Rise & the 1987 cartoon or the 2003 cartoon would have been a possibility due to them also being 2D animated series.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
14. April & Sunita were planned to have more 'girls night' episodes together.
Tumblr media
It was also stated that Casey would have possibly have developed a dynamic with both April & Sunita so there is also a possibility that Casey would have been included in the 'girls night' episodes with April & Sunita as well.
Battle Nexus poisoning, except more involved, I guess. You know those times when you get sick, but you're away from home? And then you just try to lay down on a bench or on your friend/family member while trying to make it more bearable?
Leo had a pretty rough Battle Nexus experience. Good thing Donnie was there to take care of him (to the best of his ability).
"You can relax, you know," Don says not twenty minutes into their journey when the beach is finally out of sight.
Too busy examining the terrain for any enemies, Leo didn't process his question, only that his brother had spoken. Leo looks at Don and quirks up a blond brow. "Huh?" he grunts.
Don's not even looking at him, but still, he can tell exactly what's wrong. "I can tell you're getting nervous, so do yourself some good and try to relax, brother."
"I'm fine, Don," Leo protests, gentle with his brother like he isn't with his crewmates.
"Think of all that we have been through. We'll survive what we get into." Don finally turns his eyes to his brother, a brilliant smile on his face. It's the same one he gives to his family when he's trying to soothe them, the same one he gives when he's writing letters to his husband back home.
Leo looks at his brother in confusion. "What do you mean?"
Don's eyes are softer than they have been since this war started ten years ago. Now that the war is over, gone is the battle-hardened field medic and strategist. In his place stands a peaceable brother worrying over his oldest sibling. "I know that you're tired of the war and bloodshed. Tell me, is this how we're supposed to live." His eyes dart to Leo's hand, which is gripping his sword in preparation for a fight. "Look at how you grip your sword, enough said. Why should we take when we could give?"
Leo startles, realizing his brother may have a point.
"You can show a person that you trust them when you stop and lower your guard. Here we have a chance for some adjustments. Let me show you; it's not that hard." Don offers his hand, palm up, for his brother to take.
Leo hesitates for a moment, glancing around the trees, then decides that he may as well see what his brother means. He takes Don's hand.
Don smiles, then his grip strengthens, and Leo yelps as he's pulled off his feet and into a run, not unlike when they were children before the war. Before the death of their mother, only named as T.C. by their father. Don, fifteen at the time, and Leo, seventeen, had spent less and less time together since this war broke out, and Leo regrets it.
Leo laughs for the first time since the war began.
Don glances back, smile brightening. "This life is amazing when you greet it with open arms," he says, skidding to a stop in front of a rock. He climbs up, never breaking his grip on Leo.
When Leo joins him, he sees a herd of deer playing, the parents seeming to keep careful eyes on their children. The deer look misty-eyed, and something at the back of Leo's brain blares an alert he can't clearly hear. "You've brought me to a pack of deer?" he asks.
"You can hunt them later, brother, but for now, they're peaceful, yes?" Don nudges him, voice soft. Then he grabs Leo back down.
"Whatever we face, we'll be fine if we're leading from the heart. No matter the place, we can light up the world; here's how to start. Greet the world with open arms." Don takes Leo's hand and squeezes. "Open arms, Leo."
"Welcome," states a voice from behind them.
In a flash, Leo uses Don's grip against him, tugging his younger brother behind him as he unsheathes one katana and holds it defensively in front of him. "Stay back," he orders.
Don puts a hand on Leo's shoulder, murmuring a whisper in his ear. "Brother," he says softly, "greet the world with open arms."
Leo steps back to make sure Don's back is covered by the rocks behind them. "We're only here for food," he says, a little less sharp but just as tense.
"Food?" the voice, a man with clouded eyes and a slack expression, asks back.
Leo eyes him warily, alarm bells ringing in his head like gongs. "Six hundred of my friends are waiting for us to return to them." The man steps forward. "Stay back, I'm warning you," he snarls, and the man returns to his previous position, still slack and vacant.
Don makes a noise behind him. Leo ignores it.
"If we don't get back safely, my men will come and burn this place to the ground," Leo promises.
The man disappears, and Don makes another noise. "Well, that's one way to have open arms," he says sarcastically, staring into Leo's eyes with a deadpan look.
Leo rolls his eyes fondly. Athena had trained the "open arms" philosophy Don operated under out of him years ago. Leo couldn't afford to let others so close, couldn't be so lax in his attention. Leo is a soldier, a general, a king. Don, his advisor, strategist, and healer, could allow others that close. Hephestus, his brother's patron, wasn't nearly as strict as Athena. Don was allowed to be soft.
Truthfully, if he could've helped it, Leo would've gone to war without his non-combative and less confrontational brother. Don's soft heart may have attracted Miyamoto Usagi, and Leo loves him for it, but on the battlefield, Don wasn't brutal enough to kill where he needed to. A strength, but not one Leo could allow on the fields. He needed soldiers. He'd been surprised and pleased when Don revealed he was capable of using the skills their father taught them to do fatal damage to another body. Though, Leo suspects it has more to do with the King of Sparta's threat to draft Don's husband and his too-young son if he refused.
"Here you go!"
A fruit appears at his elbow, small and round. And glowing. So this was the source of light Don had seen from the ship. Leo took the fruit and cracked it in half to examine the inside. The seeds were glowing as well.
"See!" Don says excitedly, ducking out from behind his eldest brother. "Leo!"
The king startles at the sound of his name. After 10 years of being called "my king" and "captain" almost exclusively, his own name was a shock to his ears. "Don," he says.
Don has already stepped closer to the man, to the army he'd brought back with him, each one as vacant behind the eyes as the last. "You just have to-"
But Leo cuts him off by grabbing a fist full of his chitin and yanking him backward until he's returned to Leo's side. Then, he forces the fruit to Don's eye level. "Don, I wish I could tell you I agree, but see here? The way the fruit is glowing and filled with glowing seed?"
Don takes the fruit Leo hands to him, fascination on his face. "Oh?" he asks, bringing the fruit closer to study the glow.
Leo snatches the fruit back before it can infect his brother's brilliant mind. "It took me a while to notice the kind of fruit they eat. It's a lotus. You remember we read about them. They control your mind and never let you free."
Don hums. He looks downcast, and Leo almost feels bad about dampening the excitement, but then another spark sets itself ablaze in Don's eyes, and he swivels around with a grin.
"Don-" Leo protests, but his brother pays him no mind.
"Lotus Eaters, I'd like to show my brother that kindness is brave. Could you tell me where there's other food to eat?"
The Lotus Eaters think about it for several minutes. Leo gets frustrated, almost grabs his brother again several times. Don, however, patient Don, gentle Don, he stays right there and waits.
"A cave!" the creatures eventually chorus.
"A cave!" Don repeats back. "A cave where we could feast? Where do we sail to find this food-filled cave?" He glances back at his brother with a knowing smile.
"East!" replies the Lotus Eaters. At the same time, some of them point and say, "That way!"
Don's smile widens. "Thank you," he says.
"Welcome."
He returns to his brother as the Lotus Eaters disappear back into the brush. "Brother," he says softly, a worried dip to his brow, even as he smiles and lays a hand on Leo's shoulder. "This life is amazing when you greet it with open arms. I see in your face there is so much guilt inside your heart. So, why not replace it and light up the world. Here's how to start." He pulls his brother into a tight hug and murmurs. "Greet the world with open arms."
Leo's still thinking of the words when Don pulls back, taking both hands with a fond smile. "Greet the world with open arms."
Don nods. "You can relax, Leo."
If these two were the same Usagi that would have been so funny.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Do you know how great it would be if Usagi just took one look at this angsty, young, and traumatized 2012 Leo and thought “Welp. I’ve seen THIS before” so he just snatches him (+ his brothers) up, hauls their turtle butts to the 2003 tmnt dimension, and plops them down right in front of their 2003 counterparts?
I guess some things can never be (at least not in canon)
