BTS of #RWRBMovie: NYE kiss
via Consequence:
It was important for Henry to be the grab-and-kiss-er in this scenario, Lopez says, because “there’s something very striking about a character such as Henry, who has spent up to that point in the film being very buttoned down and seemingly in control of his urges in that moment, losing the ability to control his urges and give into the desire to kiss Alex.” Plus, there’s the additional context of Henry being literal royalty: “There’s something very sexy and romantic about a prince dropping his guard. And taking things that are old movie tropes and letting two boys do it — that was definitely the romantic gesture that we wanted to go for.” Of course, on a practical level, the grab-and-kiss has certain practical elements to consider. “The only danger on set was that sometimes [Nicholas Galitzine] would come at [Taylor Zakhar Perez] so forcefully that they would just bang faces. We were really worried about fat lips and bloody noses,” he laughs. It wasn’t just the passion of the actors that was an issue, but the terrain — according to Lopez, “they were on a slope. So Nick was going downhill.” (Passion with a little help from Newtonian physics.) On set for this as well as the film’s other, more graphic scenes was intimacy coordinator Robbie Taylor Hunt, who oversaw shooting the kiss in two different ways: “We had one where Alex is completely taken by surprise and doesn’t respond to the kiss. And then we did Version B, where Alex is taken by surprise and then does respond to the kiss. Because I wasn’t quite sure what was going to work, so I gave myself the option of having both.” Process-wise, this meant rehearsing both versions and then shooting different angles and framings, which means “those lads kissed easily like 40 or 50 times that night,” Lopez laughs. “There’s nothing like having to kiss someone 40 times in a row to really, really take the allure out of kissing.”
While the grab-and-kiss is the best term I’ve been able to come up with for this maneuver, it’s not my favorite — if only because if you Google the phrase “grab and kiss” today, the search term pulls up very unsexy results. These unsexy results (including phrases like “attempted sexual assault” and “Donald Trump”) do serve as a necessary reminder of how delicate a balance one has to strike with this particular maneuver. As Lopez puts it, “there is a gray area and I think you see it in some older movies, in which they do the grab-and-kiss and it’s icky — it just feels not consensual at all, or very uncomfortable.” What’s so powerful about the grab-and-kiss is that it’s an embrace with purpose. There’s a backstory to it, usually one involving repressed emotions and deeply held longing. That was the strategy Lopez used with Red, White & Royal Blue, using the scenes leading up to the kiss beneath the tree to emphasize “the pull between them.” (Specifically, Lopez got what he calls his “West Side Story moment” during the New Year’s party, when a crowd dancing to Lil Jon’s “Get Low” does as instructed by the song, leaving a still-standing Henry and Alex to gaze at each other across the dance floor.)

The Conservative Party has a “weird” problem. Research organisation More In Common conducted 10 focus groups around the country on the Tory party and its leadership contest – and one of its headline findings is the party needs to seem more in line with regular voters, and to be a bit less “weird”.
That “weird” charge is a nightmarish one for any political movement to face, as Donald Trump is learning to his cost in the US presidential contest. Since Kamala Harris’s pick for vice president, Tim Walz, started using the “weird” label for team Trump – over their fixation on attacking “childless cat ladies“, and policing women’s bodies – the campaign has struggled to rebut the allegation.
America is much more steeped in the culture wars than Britain. Right-wing Americans and left-wing Americans get their news from completely different sources, and so hear completely different narratives. The country is far more polarised on social issues like LGBT rights and abortion. Trust is far lower. In America, engaging in so-called culture wars is necessary to capture some voters, even if it comes with the risk of looking weird.
It shouldn’t need saying, but Britain is not America. We still agree on much more than we disagree on. The UK public is overwhelmingly in favour of gay marriage and women’s right to access abortions – including a majority of Conservative voters, on both issues. The BBC is both the most accessed source of news and the most trusted news brand in the UK, across all age groups.
Voters of different parties largely agree on the top issues facing the UK: cost of living, the NHS, and the state of the economy – even if they disagree on how much of a priority immigration is. The messaging from the public couldn’t be much clearer: they want politicians who will get on with the boring stuff. They want public services to work better, they want better wages, and they’d like to be confident their children will be able to afford homes.
It is notable that everyone in More In Common’s focus groups voted Conservative in 2019, when Boris Johnson was in power and was hardly tiptoeing around being some kind of politically correct or “woke” icon. The people warning they find the Tories weird right now are not classic snowflakes – they are exactly the voters the party has lost.
All of which makes the decisions of some of the Conservative leadership contenders even more baffling than they first appear. The campaign trailer of Kemi Badenoch, ostensibly the front-runner in the contest, opened with an attack on the actor David Tennant, with Kemi Badenoch herself boldly stating she is “not afraid of Doctor Who, or whoever”.
Who is this stuff supposed to be for? It does not align at all with the priorities of Conservative voters, and so will surely just lead the party down another electoral dead end.
Elected Conservatives have become obsessed with the weirdness of US politics. Some of this may be self-serving: there is a lot of money to be earned on the US right-wing speaking circuit for retired British politicians, but they have to serve up the red meat that US Republicans want.
But some of it is simply the UK obsession with America and our “special relationship”, which leads politicians astray into thinking our politics are more similar than they are. This leads them in to assuming hot-button American political issues will play well here, when they go down like cold sick.
It leads to decisions like Tory leadership challenger Robert Jenrick saying he would vote for Donald Trump, a wildly unpopular man with UK voters. Most in the UK public barely watch the news, let alone follow politics closely. The very act of being in politics makes you “weird” – but the Conservatives risk taking it to a whole new level.
Unless they start listening to the voters actually living in the country, rather than looking to the US, they are set for a long time in opposition indeed.

Welcome To My Blog
First things first, Hi, I'm Magnus! Please keep all hands and feet inside the vehicle at all times, ensure that your seat belt is fastened correctly and prepare yourself for the wonderful nosedive into the horrendous world of Literally Everything Ever. I'm not your mommy. I will not censor myself for you. I'm happy to keep things chill, sfw, etc but I am not going to cater to you. It is your job to police your internet usage, not everyone else's. You're on Tumblr, be responsible, you're a Big Kid so Act Like It.
TL;DR
⊹ ʚ🍊ɞ ACCOUNT … | ⟡ name ⇾ Magnus | ⟡ age ⇾ adult | ⟡ system ⇾ introject heavy | ⟡ I am a the they/them Donald Trump warned you about
Cool! I'm Magnus, I use he/they pronouns. I'm a person with DID. I don't owe you their names or how many I share this clown car of a body with. We, however, will not be using emoji sign offs. We have names, you can deal with it.
I love correcting DID misinformation!!! Please ask me any questions you may have; I love answering them! I'm fairly open minded about most things but that needs to be mutual! If you're coming to me with questions and are looking for a specific answer and are not willing to hear if I answer otherwise, simply don't ask! My stances and experiences are mine to share as I please, but if you don't like what I have to say, that's on you. If you want resources, I would like to introduce you to my friend Marco. I love them and she has a bunch of cool resources. Now if you call me a slur, I will just laugh at you and the screenshot is going in a groupchat full of my friends, in true college fashion.
I am essentially your friendly neighborhood Spiderman and your fhacked up Moon Knight Buddy only I am Not Peter Parker or Marc Spector, and I am actually just very mean to people who fake disorders. If you do that, I will actually be hitting you over the head with the DSM-5 and walking away. I have a block button, and I love to use it. oooooo shiny red button.
BEFORE YOU INTERACT!!! I am generally pretty reasonable, I would think! I am a big pusher of internet safety. I'm happy to censor myself about the standard stuff and in conversation but I'm not going to sit with the super absurd or super petty. If you're going to ping someone in a discord server to remove an emoji reaction as common as a thumbs up emoji, there are some problems, and you need to remove yourself from a situation. I don't talk about anything gruesome or horrendous very often but if I do, you are not obligated to read it!! Be safe!!!
No DNI because I'm a Big Boy and you are too. However! If you're big on any of the following, I advise you to not interact or just block me! I promise you won't hurt my feelings and I'm not budging on these! Womp womp, sweetie.
♥︎ Endos, Tuplas or any of you who think systems aren't disordered! Please go check out the DSM-5, Hospital Resources or just get back into kinning, I'd love to read your kinlist instead. If you've been tricked into bad theories by endos and the super common misinformation, I don't blame you, but keep that shit away from me if you're going to perpetuate it!
♥︎ TERFs! Sit back down JKR, there's black mold on your walls. Women's rights are awesome, don't put others down for it. You don't need to do that.
♥︎ If you think binary or cis men can be lesbians [WRONG BUZZER] AND/OR if you think binary or cis women can be mlm [WRONG BUZZER]
♥︎ If you think 'cis' is a slur! Its just a latin prefix bb, go back to third grade please. You need a literacy lesson.
♥︎ If you take ships too seriously. They're just silly little characters, pookie, no need to be angry if I don't ship them too.
♥︎ If you're super pushy about Kpop groups!! I love Kpop too bestie but there is No Need for there to be fights over stanning groups or people. I agree, they're awesome, but they are Real People and they See What You Say. There is no need to throw hands if I don't stan Stray Kids, Han Jisung is pretty, I know.
♥︎ Systems who think systems deserve special treatment just for the sake of it. I love pk, don't get me wrong, but you don't need it in every server you're in. Singlets don't know we exist sometimes, there is no need to get angry when they ask "why is there an application talking?" be patient. You're a big kid, you can mask or be polite when people are asking questions.
♥︎ People who refuse to genuinely debate their opinions. (Disclaimer: opinions do not equate to 'x,y,z people don't deserve rights'. Thats just bigotry) You are a coward. History will forget you and your name will be lost to time as the world spins. You will be nothing but a headstone that crumples in a heavy storm.
♥︎ NSFW in my notifs? Blocked. Womp womp, I couldn't care less about seeing it on Tumblr, I've seen The Horrors of the Hellsite TM, but I don't need that in my notifs.
♥︎ Use common sense. It's not that hard, It's incredibly easy actually! And free!
My Inbox / Askbox? Open! Feel free to send me the sillies, questions, etc. I am happy to infodump and chat, fresh perspective is always fun.

The Elephant
Content: Implied potential digestion
Description: A certain someone eats their rival in an elevator
The old elephant, business man, and politician Donald Trump stood in the steel elevator; they had just finished with a debate broadcasted to millions of Americans, against his political rival, Joe Biden. He went to press the button to go to the first floor, when he saw that donkey, Joe, coming to a stop as he saw them in the elevator.
"Too tired to take the stairs, Sleepy Joe?" The elephant teased. He rolled his eyes, making his way into the elevator, attempting to keep as much distance from the other man as possible. Trump grinned,
"You did terribly, just absolutely terribly out there, in case you were wondering."
"At least I don't have a criminal record! And I did just fine." He retorted under his breath. Trump didn't pay much attention, and they pressed the button to the first floor. The elevator descended down, but when they reached the bottom, the doors refused to open, instead making a metal clunk sound. The elephant pressed the door opening button, but was met with another clunk.
Immediately the elephant began calling for help, and the donkey covered his ears,
"Will you shut up? Just hit the emergency button!" He said after quickly getting tired of the elephant's yelling.
"There's no 'emergency button', you have no clue what you're talking about!" He replied. The donkey shoved him aside, and pressed the red emergency button,
"See? It's right here! Now we just have to wait." Joe sat in the corner of the elevator, and Trump followed suit in his own corner. Not even ten minutes later, Trump pulled out a alcohol flask from their suit pocket and started drinking the booze that was inside.
"You seriously have that on you? Even during a debate?" Joe questioned,
"Debates are stressful," Trump cleaned the lip of the flask, and held it out to Biden, "Want some?" He asked. Joe grabbed it, murmuring something about how it'll be the only way to handle being stuck with him. The two men shared the flask of booze among themselves, and as the bitter liquor poured down their throats, they both started noticing little things about each other they had payed no attention to before. The look in each other's eyes was indescribable, and if it was a cartoon their eyes would be in the shape of candied hearts. Biden made the first move, crawling over to Donald like a wild animal and wrapping their arms around his neck, pulling him close. Trump gasped Biden's name, and quickly leaned into it. Trump held Joe's head in his hands, and slowly leaned in for a deep, passionate kiss. Biden's eyes fluttered close, tongue exploring Trump's mouth, the disgusting wet sounds of old men kissing filled the elevator. They could smell the alcohol on each other's breaths, and even taste it as their tongues fought against each other. After a long kissing frenzy, Biden pulled away, looking at Donald, now a stranger to him. But Trump wanted more. He opened his mouth wide open, engulfing Biden's head, his tongue running along his face. As Biden squirmed, Trump grabbed him by the behind, and tilted his head upward, letting gravity do most of the work. Biden slid down Trump's throat, thrashing around, screaming for help. But no one was coming, not yet. Biden was quickly inside Trump's stomach, the wet flesh massaging Biden's body. He rubbed the wriggling bulge in his stomach, promising that he's safe. But Joe was not convinced, hitting the walls of Trump's stomach, causing it to growl out in pain. Trump quickly went to lay on his belly, the squirms ceasing entirely as Joe was crushed inside.
"There we go, nice and complacent." Trump patted his swollen belly, delighted. Biden tried to speak, but no words came out, his voice hoarse from all the screaming. All he could do was sit and wait, listening to every wet squelsh and gurgle Trump's stomach made. He started to panic, feeling a warm sensation as digestion slowly began. He couldn't move being squished within Trump's stomach, and this could be the end. He knew rescue would be there soon, but would he still be there when it arrived?

Halloween Costume Trend: Dressing Up as Donald Trump the McDonald's Fry Cook
Halloween Costume Trend: Dressing Up as Donald Trump the McDonald's Fry Cook
A quirky new Halloween costume trend is taking shape: dressing up as Donald Trump, the McDonald's fry cook. This surge in interest follows the former president's widely publicized 30-minute stint flipping fries at a McDonald's in Pennsylvania, which has led to a staggering 412% increase in searches for “McDonald’s costume” worldwide, according to data from Google Trends analyzed by World of Card Games. The Photo Op That Sparked a Trend (via REUTERS) During his staged photo opportunity, Trump engaged with pre-screened customers while donning a fry cook's attire. The event has since sparked a wave of searches for “Trump costume” and “Trump Halloween costume,” revealing a desire among the public to emulate this unique intersection of politics and pop culture. “When a figure as influential as a presidential candidate pulls a move like this, it’s not uncommon for people to want to copy it, whether for fun or to make a statement,” noted a representative from World of Card Games. How to Create the Costume For those interested in recreating Trump’s fry cook look on a budget, the formula is straightforward: start with a signature wig, a crisp white button-up shirt, a bright red tie, and a McDonald’s apron. To complete the ensemble, costume enthusiasts can add a name tag reading “Donald” and carry a fast-food tray for extra flair. McDonald's Response In light of the media frenzy, McDonald’s has clarified that it does not endorse any political candidates and did not participate in Trump’s brief shift at the Feasterville location. “We are not red or blue — we are golden,” the burger giant stated, emphasizing its neutral stance. Derek Giacomantonio, the franchise owner, revealed that he received inquiries from law enforcement regarding Trump’s visit. With around 95% of McDonald's locations operated by franchisees, individual operators have the discretion to manage such events. A Humorous Choice for Halloween As Halloween approaches, the choice to dress as Trump the fry cook offers a humorous blend of political commentary and festive spirit. This unique costume idea is sure to stand out at any Halloween gathering, appealing to those looking to add a playful twist to their celebrations. Thank you for taking the time to read this article! Harris wraps up Georgia rally, Trump calls 2024 presidential election “choice between communism and freedom”
Vice presidential and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and her running mate Tim Walz wrapped up a two-day campaign rally on Thursday in the crucial US state of Georgia, where she gave her first one-on-one interview to national media.
Harris attacks Trump in Georgia
In her 25-minute speech at the rally in Savannah, Harris lashed out at former president and Republican candidate Donald Trump for his comments that he would become a dictator “for one day” if elected to a second term, and condemned his remarks that the election would be organised so that Republicans would never lose again. She also attacked Trump’s policies and emphasised her stance on hot-button topics such as abortion and gun control. Harris told the crowd:
“So Savannah, are you ready to make your voices heard?” “Do we believe in freedom? Do we believe in opportunity? Do we believe in the promise of America? And are we ready to fight for it? And when we fight? (Crowd responds: “We will win”). God bless you, and God bless the United States of America.”
After the campaign rally, Harris and Waltz gave their first joint television interview on CNN. Harris said her “values” have not changed despite some twists and turns in key policy positions on immigration and mining. She turned the conversation to what she would bring to the American people if elected president. she said:
“First and foremost, one of my highest priorities is to do what we can to support and strengthen the middle class. When I look at the aspirations, the goals, the ambitions of the American people, I think that people are ready for a new way forward, in a way that generations of Americans have been fueled by, by hope and by optimism.”
Georgia was once considered a red-vote-dominated state like Texas and Florida, but is now considered a so-called “purple state” – a mix of red Republicans and blue Democrats – especially after President Joe Biden defeated Trump in the state in the 2020 election by nearly 12,000 votes.
The latest polls show Harris and Trump trailing nearly evenly in Georgia, making the Peach State a crucial battleground when Americans go to the polls on November 5.
Trump crushes on Harris in Michigan
Meanwhile, Harris’ opponent Donald Trump said on Thursday in Michigan that the 2024 presidential election is “a choice between communism and freedom.”
Trump claimed Harris is a “Marxist” and accused her of “radicalism” for promising “communist-style” price controls and free, taxpayer-funded health care. He said:
“This election is not a choice between Democrats and Republicans. It’s a choice between communism and freedom. That’s what it’s about.”
He said he came to Michigan with “a simple message for American automakers and American workers: your long economic nightmare will end very soon … Turn it around by casting your vote. We will defeat Comrade Kamala Harris, and we will bring back the American dream – bigger, better, stronger and just better.”
He also accused President Joe Biden and Harris of causing “the worst inflation in American history.” Trump said:
“Workers like you and communities like this should be able to afford a nice house, a new car and a growing family on a single income, all while enjoying the highest standard of living on earth. My vision is for a middle class that is, once again, the envy of the entire world.”
Noting Harris’ pledge to fight for “strong border security,” Trump said:
“Now she is saying “we want to build a strong border.” Where has she been for three and a half years, as we took in 20 million people, many of them horrible criminals?”
He promised voters:
“We’re going to make America the production capital, manufacturing capital of the world, and it’s going to happen very fast.”
The issue of migration in the US has become a major theme in Donald Trump’s campaign. He accused Biden of not being strict enough in his policy towards immigrants and promises to resort to the most massive wave of deportations of illegal immigrants from the US
The problem of illegal immigration is considered by most Americans to be the most important issue in the country. According to a recent Gallup poll, about one-third of those surveyed are concerned about the influx of illegals (27%).

South Korea on Thursday offered to send humanitarian aid to North Korea after the isolated North reported extensive damage from floods in towns along its western border with China.
North Korea did not immediately respond. If the North accepts the offer, it could lead to the first official contact between the two Koreas in several years. After the collapse of direct diplomacy between its leader, Kim Jong-un, and the U.S. president at the time, Donald J. Trump, North Korea in 2020 cut off all official channels of dialogue with the South.
In recent days, North Korea has reported severe floods near the estuary where the Yalu River empties into the Yellow Sea after flowing along the North Korea-China border. State media reported that roads, railways and more than 4,100 homes were submerged, along with large swaths of farmland. Mr. Kim visited the area, ordering his military to use helicopters to evacuate thousands of villagers isolated by the flooding.
“We offer sincere condolences for North Koreans who have suffered severe damage from torrential rains,” the South Korean government said in a statement on Thursday. “We express our willingness to quickly provide urgently needed items for the victims out of humanitarianism and compatriotic love for the North Korean people.”

The statement added that South Korea was ready for dialogue through the two Korean Red Cross societies to determine the size and other details of humanitarian aid. South Korean officials said that they were willing to provide food and medicine.
The offer was an unusual overture of reconciliation on the divided Korean Peninsula. As recently as a week ago, the two countries were accusing each other of “crude and dirty” provocations, as North Korea sent balloons loaded with trash across the inter-Korean border, and the South retaliated by blaring K-pop and anti-Pyongyang propaganda into the North through loudspeakers.

The "2024" element adds a forward-looking dimension, suggesting that those who miss Trump will have an opportunity to support him again in the next presidential election cycle. Visually, the design likely features a prominent image of Donald Trump, possibly in a classic pose such as waving to a crowd or standing at a podium. The image chosen would aim to portray Trump in a strong, presidential light, reminding viewers of his time in office. "The Sign of the Upright." Introduction to the Vasudeva Upanishad, the Exploration of the Mysteries of the Horse.
The Vasudeva Upanishad was written around 300 BCE. It numbers 77 of 108, and is contained in the Sama Veda. Horses in Vedanta as in other religions are not positive omens. Without a skilled rider, they have the connotation of being as wild as demons.
The Horse called Vasudeva was said to have been the mount of Lord Krishna, an incarnation of the god Skanda, the god of justice who came to earth to deal with a king who cheated his way to his crown. This resulted in the recitation of the Bhagavad Gita to his kingdom and then subsequent slaughter of everyone who supported the cheater.
It is my hope to encourage the same thing to Donald Trump and every Republican who helped him cheat his way into office after the debacle with Blue State Digital in 2016. As in Krishna's day, the Department of Justice and the contender need to get up off their asses and fight.
Everyone associated with the first Trump Campaign and Administration that knew about those fraudulent election proceedings must be put to death. Donald Trump must be made an example of. There are no excuses for interfering with election results or allowing a man who was not legally elected to become the president or to pretend all is well and allow him to run for election again.
This along with Donald Trump's unfathomable popularity are signs the human race is in grave danger from corruption and something has to be done.
The Vasudeva Upanishad begins with an analysis of what is called an Urdhvapundra, "the mark of the upright", which is worn by persons who have entered the priesthood and are decorated in preparation for temple proceedings.
The Pundra proceeds from a dot, the mind, and emanates three rays of light, one each for the Holy Trinity of Hinduism, Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, "Adoration, Grace, and Kindness."
Om. The God like sage Narada saluted Lord Vasudeva and requested him, “Oh God, please teach me the rules of Urdhva Pundra (the religious mark of Vaishnavas which is vertical and points upward)”.
God Vasudeva addressing him told as follows:
2. The Brahmachari (unmarried student of Vedas) and Grahastha (householder) after reciting the following prayer: “Oh God who holds the wheel, mace and conch, Oh Achyutha who is staying in Dwaraka, Oh Govinda, Oh Lotus eyed one, please protect me, who has surrendered to you.” should apply Urdhva Pundra in his forehead and other 12 places with his pure finger (finger next to the little finger) reciting either the Vishnu Gayathri or the 12 names of the Lord viz., Kesava, Narayana, Madhava, Govinda, Vishnu, Madhusudana, Trivikrama, Vamana, Sreedhara, Hrishikesa, Padmanabha and Damodhara.
A Vaishnava is a member of a school of Hinduism who studies the Ramayana and Bhagavad Gita along with other texts closely associated with Rama, Krishna, and stories of their worldly pursuits. A Shaivite studies a slightly different approach but both kinds of priests believe in one non-dual Holy Spirit that animates the universe out of Great Grace.
The Upanishad mentions there are 12 names one must understand in order to consecrate the mind to the Self of this Holy Being.
Kesava: long hair or anything that belongs to Krishna.
Narayana: the Sustainer.
Madhava: sweetness.
Govinda: the chief herdsman.
Vishnu: the All-Pervasive.
Madhusudana: destroyer of the honey demon.
Trivikrama: master of the three kinds of order.
Vamana: pain of vomiting, the better half of humanity that is retained after it renounces evil.
Sreedhara: the highest rank.
Hrishikesa: Lord of the Faculties.
Padmanabha: the Lotus Naveled. Hndus believe the tingly place under the belly button has special significance.
Damodhara: master of the sacred thread, the red thread of the priesthood.
All twelve names pertain to aspects of the ways the Upanishad mark the mind and turn it into a vessel that is pure, fit for the duty of service in the Name of the Most High.
The Upanishad will continue.

US strikes in the Middle East will not change Biden’s re-election fortunes
On Friday, the United States conducted a series of strikes on sites in Syria and Iraq that it said belonged to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and affiliated militias. The air raids came in retaliation for the January 28 attack by the armed group Islamic Resistance of Iraq (IRI) on a military base in Jordan that killed three US soldiers and injured more than 40 others.
In a statement issued the same day, US President Joe Biden said the response would not stop at IRGC targets. On Saturday, American and British forces bombarded Houthi bases in Yemen in an apparent continuation of efforts to degrade their ability to disrupt maritime shipping in the Red Sea. There may be more attacks in the coming days as well, but clearly, the US is refraining from directly hitting Iran, which it accuses of supplying weapons to IRI.

A military response was politically unavoidable for the Biden administration. As is normally the case in an election year, any serious domestic development or international incident involving US interests or prestige becomes a defining moment for the sitting administration, whether Republican or Democratic.
The measured retaliation reflects the fact that the US president has a lot to worry about in terms of domestic perceptions and the attitudes of voters he seeks to sway in his favour as well as the dramatic changes in his own party’s electorate.
Since October 7, the Israeli government has sought to portray Hamas’s attack as an Iranian act of aggression. After the January 28 attack in Jordan, some Republican members of Congress echoed this position.
South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham minced no words in agitating for a direct US strike on Iran itself. His Republican colleagues Tom Cotton of Arkansas and John Cornyn of Texas seconded his call.
Former President Donald Trump, who is the likely Republican nominee for the presidential election in November, took a rather isolationist stance and insisted that the Jordan attack would not have taken place had he been in charge.
Establishment Republicans like Graham, Cornyn and Cotton may no longer reflect the general mood among the rank and file who now form Trump’s solid base and are trying to change the party’s position on foreign policy. Indeed, the Make America Great Again crowd is loathe to expand US entanglements overseas and prefers to see financial resources used domestically, for example, to strengthen the southern border and halt the influx of migrants and asylum seekers.
But it is not just the core of Trump’s base that embraces this anti-escalatory stance. Given that the vast majority of Americans worry about their country getting dragged into a war – about 84 percent, according to one recent poll – Trump’s isolationist rhetoric has widespread appeal.
Democrats in Congress, perhaps feeling the growing pressure, reacted to the Jordan attack by calling for a strong but “proportionate” response, a euphemism for a measured strike on pro-Iran militia targets but without directly hitting Iran. Such positions were articulated by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York and Senators Ben Cardin of Maryland and Jack Reed of Rhode Island.
Indeed, the Biden administration’s response to the Jordan attack has practically marked the midpoint between hawkish Republicans’ calls for striking Iran directly and the Democrats’ calls for a limited reaction. According to the Pentagon, its strikes included the command and control centres of Iran’s IRGC and its affiliated militias – in Syria, Iraq and Yemen – as well as their drone and intelligence capabilities.
American foreign policy decisions and actions rarely impact the outcome of presidential elections, even less congressional elections. This time around, however, Biden’s choices may make or break his chances for re-election.
In his administration’s response to the Jordan attack, he had to reconcile his declared disinterest in widening the conflict in the Middle East with the need to respond to an act of aggression against US troops in the region. But the response that he ordered was nonetheless an escalation of tensions that may lead to the dreaded widening of the conflict.
Biden decided on this response, likely with his re-election campaign strategy in mind. Knowing that he is unlikely to persuade many hardcore Republicans to switch their votes from presumptive nominee Trump to him, Biden seeks to get the support of most independents and some moderate Republicans in November. Reports following the New Hampshire primary indicate that Biden may be able to count on segments of these two groups to support his campaign.
Usually supportive of moderate positions in US foreign policy that protect American interests and prestige, many independents and moderate Republicans are likely to approve of Biden’s response to the Jordan attack.
While he may be gaining their support, Biden may be losing the support of others. Indeed, the most important problem for him may be in his own Democratic Party, where the sentiment is clearly shifting – slowly but perceptibly – away from traditional support for military action overseas and for Israel.
Young voters in general, who were crucial for Biden’s victory in 2020, and young Democrats have soured on the president’s policy choices, especially those related to Israel and the Middle East. They accuse him of hypocrisy because of his contradictory positions on the Russian war on Ukraine and the Israeli war on Gaza.
Crucially, the president’s fortunes may depend on whether Muslim and Arab Americans decide to vote for him in November. Currently, the support of both communities is in doubt as Biden continues to ignore their calls for a ceasefire in Gaza and is doing nothing to stop the Israeli slaughter, in which more than 27,000 Palestinians have been killed.
While his retaliation for the Jordan attack may be the right geopolitical move that US foreign policy requires, it is unlikely to restore to him any support from young Democrats and Muslim and Arab Americans.
What Biden needs to do to gain their support is to dissociate himself and his administration from Israel’s genocidal war, its apartheid system and its occupation of Palestinian land. Indeed, his re-election remains uncertain without a new, morally defensible direction in US foreign policy in the Middle East.
