I think it would be hilarious if when Ed and Al joined team Mustang they just assumed Roy and Riza were married and like one day much to their confusion and sadness they find out they're not and the rest of Team Mustang has to be like we don't really get it either

I wanna ramble about Ed/Wrath (Wrathfull) so much so I'm gonna.

A lotta people I've met have been seeing Wrath as related to the Elric brothers bc of his relationship to Sloth - but I gotta say that I personally don't agree with this.

Yes, Wrath does later state in episode 47 (before killing Lust) that he's going to take everything Edward loves (even though he doesn't want Al, he doesn't want Winry, he doesn't want anything - except Ed's limbs/body and a maternal figure.) Yes, Wrath clings to Sloth, calls her mommy/mama and sees her as his genuine mother.

But you HAVE TO realize it's not reciprocated, and even then - a clear point shown with the homunculi - she's *not* Trisha. She is, but she isn't; She once was, but is no longer her. Just like how Lust is no longer that Ishbalan woman that Scar's older brother once loved, just like how Wrath is no longer that infant Izumi miscarried. The homunculi were ONCE human, ONCE those those people - but they aren't anymore. Anyway, back onto the topic at hand, Sloth doesn't feel any maternal love, she doesn't allow herself to express it nor feel it; A huge part of her character is being apathetic, is changing herself and not allowing herself to chase the frivolous dream of being who she once was - which was a loving mother.

Sure, she let's Wrath hang off her and depend on her - but that's probably to help keep him in check so he'll listen better to Dante and whatnot, because she can easily ACT maternal, but not express it.

So yeah, that's my clarification. Ed and Wrath (And Wrath and Al) aren't related in anyway (even if Wrath did say "she was your mama too", in ep 48 after Sloth was killed and Al was kidnapped).

Also, as an additional clarification - yes, as I've posted before, I do genuinely think that Wrath ages. So in CoS he'd of been 17-18, and in the end of 03 he'd be 14-15. (Ed is 18 in CoS, and 15-16 at the end of 03.)

NOW, with all of that out of the way, here's why I ship this ship; And why I think I may be one of the only people that ship it.

THEIR FUCKING RIVALRY IS AMAZING; This may honestly be one of the only ships I ship that involves them being straight up rivals. They hate each other (or so they think?) - Wrath wants to deprive Ed of his limbs, while Ed just wants his limbs back and deprive Wrath of his (temporarily.)

They're two sides of the same coin, their goals are similar - to regain or gain human body parts in order to complete their individual goals; They both yearn for maternal love, they both are just kids.

But unlike Ed, Wrath is playful and childish - Ed had to grow up fast in order to survive and take care of his brother.

But unlike Wrath, Ed isn't as carefree and trusting to the world.

I dunno, they're just so UGH they make me sick.

Ed clearly is unsure of how he feels about Wrath - at first he's jumping on him and fighting him for answers, being aggressive and trying to kill him, and then he seems to just give up on that; He let's Wrath throw him around, punch him and strangle him. He let's Wrath scream and yell, and cry. He even catches Wrath and gives him a look over after Envy kicks him in the warehouse!! AND on top of that, his reaction to Wrath's death in CoS hits me HARD.

In this scene, I'll maybe get the specific translation later, Ed remarks about how he's surprised that Al got out of the underground city - and Al replies that Wrath showed him the way out, to which Edward questions by saying Wrath's name and Alphonse simply says that he used Wrath to open the Gate on his side. LOOK AT THE DESPAIR HE HAS; And yes, this could be just at the fact Al had to take a life - something Ed never wanted Al to have to do - but I see it as both. ESPECIALLY WHEN ED BRINGS UP WRATH LATER.

Meanwhile, Wrath seemed fearful of Ed at first - likely due to how he'd attack him at first and question him so aggressively - and then calm around him; Before reciprocating Ed's violent behavior. That violent behavior then turning to grief and despair, before Wrath seemed to become an ally for Ed a bit too late - hell, he was fucking SHOCKED when Ed died.

In this scene he only said "he's.. Dead" in the English dub - and he sounded so sad :( Then in CoS, as we all know, he tells Alphonse that he doesn't want to see him sacrifice his life for Ed's again - and very likely doesn't ever want to see the reverse again! I don't think Wrath was solely upset about Sloth during the whole four/three years before CoS took place - especially since he begins to miss Izumi - I think he was absolutely fucked up about Ed. ESPECIALLY SINCE he and Rosé were the last to see Ed alive, they didn't try to stop him, Wrath couldn't bc he was down two limbs and Rosé had to get her baby out of there and Wrath - it must of broken their hearts :(

But yeah! I ship them, and I have never seen any fanart of Ed and Wrath being shipped together, never seen any fanfics - and this really, really surprised me ngl.

If anyone ever does see ship content of them please lmk!! It'd be very much appreciated, I will go insane.

I wonder if Winry somehow thinks that actually bringing it up will make it worse? I mean, do not misunderstand me, I can be very embarrassed by my own conduct from time to time and I know a lot of times I would rather live with it instead of someone trying to comfort me. It's the backside of, "I don't judge myself by other people's measure"' I don't condemn myself--but I don't excuse myself either. Someone who doesn't listen to people's judgement when told they are wrong, but is all ears when told they are right, isn't a maverick or anything, they're just self-centered.

So I respect that, if that's Ed's perspective. But also...you did fight. You fought hard. You can cry! You can cry the WHOLE TIME. But you didn't run, and you didn't give up. Is what I would tell Ed. So you cried! You cried but you fucking did it.

more thoughts about FMAB as I'm 40 episodes in:

I hated Roy Mustang at the beginning, especially because my bf was making fun of me that I'll be his biggest fan. Fuck me, he was right. The Mustang x Hawkeye plot is rewiring my brain chemistry. And I'm pretty sure there'll be more drama in next episodes and it's heartbreaking, because they deserve a fucking break.

How tf Hohenhaimer could possibly have kids if he was the homunculus? will I get my answer in the next 24 episodes? Is he really a father of Elrics' brothers?

WTF??? why this sweet kid IS ALSO A HOMUNCULUS??? I should have expected this turn of events probably but still. why.

I'm kind of scared to watch next episodes, because I feel like at this moment we're in the point of no return and if something goes wrong I'll cry.

I also don't like Winry's character development. She was sweet and fierce, girlboss of her own life, but since she's discovered her feelings for Ed and the whole Scar x her parent's situation, she became kind of reckless? you know, putting herself in danger to feel somehow more useful? Girl, it's killing Ed to see you in danger, stop please...

What I really love though, is the complexity of this anime. So many characters. So many plots. So many feelings. Yet it is so morally grey in some moments.

I'll watch the next 12 episodes today - I just hope I won't cry my ass off on this.

PART 2

A few days later

“He should be awake by now…”

“Just give him time. Losing a limb is a lot of stress for a small kid.”

“We could only do so much using alchemy, so we'll just have to see when he wakes up.”

“I think I saw him move!”

Edward’s body was so heavy like something was sitting on his chest. His eyes fluttered open as he groaned and made an attempt at sitting up.

“Ed don't move!”

Too late. The moment his muscles strained against his weight, a shockwave of sharp stabbing quickly struck from his stump up through his hip. A yelp caught in his throat as his upper body slammed back down onto the mattress.

“He's going to need more herbs… go transmute some more numbing agent.”

His breathing was shaky. Before he could reach for his wrapped limb, someone grabbed his wrist to stop him. Another stab of pain followed by a deep pulsing sensation assaulted him before he could look to see who it was.

“Who-?”

“You mustn't touch it.”

“Wha-?” Opting to attempt just lifting his head this time, Ed craned his neck to look down at his lower half.

“My….my leg…”. A hitched hiccuping sound came out of Ed's mouth as his eyes grew wide again. He thought it was all a sick trick of the mind or nightmare of some kind. This can't be real! It's gone! Where is it??

“Where is my leg?!” Whipping his head back, Ed shouted and threw a tantrum, the pain getting unbearable as he tossed his limbs around. Blood seeping through the dressings.

“Edward! Ed, stop! You're hurting yourself!”

“Give it back, damn it! My leg! Where is it?!”

Everyone in the room had to hold him down. Unfortunately someone had to put pressure on his upper thigh to stop the wounded limb from being damaged further. The pressure shot another, more intense, bold of pain through him and he wailed.

Shortly after he ran out of air to scream with, the pain became too much and he passed out again. Everyone sighed.

“It's better if he stays asleep for now…”

“I've got the medicine!”

“Hurry and bring it over, we might have to reseal his wound. He threw a fit and about gave himself a head injury.”

Inspecting and redressing his stump, they gave him the numbing agent that should also help with keeping him asleep for a few more hours.

“Why can't we see him!”

“Kids, please, I know it may seem unfair, but he needs to rest. Any more stress and it'll never heal.”

“But brother is all alone in there! He needs someone there when he wakes up!”

“The alchemists that specialize in healing abilities are doing what they can. You have to be patient. You'll just be in the way. I'm sorry…”

Hohenheim was doing everything in his power to keep Al and Winry from barging into Ed's room. It was the boys’ room, but they needed a solitary area for Ed's recovery. Al was moved into Winry's room, when she visited, mainly for moral support.

The kids pouted and were about to cry for the fifth time today and that wasn’t counting the amount of fluids they collectively lost on the day of the incident.

They didn't know what to make of the sounds heard from the throne room. First it was just yelling. The most jarring part of the whole thing was a moment of silence then all they could hear was the scream of pure agony bouncing off the stone walls. Before they could escape the library/play room to even see what it was, Trisha, Ed and Al’s mother, came running in to check on them, not knowing where the scream was coming from.

She had held them as they all shook at the sound of what they believed was Hohenheim letting out a cry and then running by the archway. The curtain in the doorway fluttered at his speed and all the three of them could see was an adult man carrying someone and nothing but blood following after him. An unnerving copious amount of it. Al and Winry didn't register who or what it was until Trisha gasped. In that split second, she could make out an unconscious Ed in Hohenheim's arms.

“Edward…?”

Then it began to make sense to them. Who else could that scream have come from? And Hohenheim looking out of his mind and frantic only meant one thing. Edward was hurt. Bad. Trisha didn't want the kids to see anything so she held onto them as she closed her eyes. Al and Winry couldn't help but stare at the stream of blood creeping in from under the curtain between the stone floor seams.

Needless to say, everyone was traumatized that day, but they didn't appreciate not being able to see Ed to make sure he was actually alive. The only thing they could go on was the kicking and screaming from Ed's room a minute ago. But it was quiet now.

“I hope my brother is okay…”

“He'll be okay, Al… He's too stubborn to die.”

They both looked at each other ready to cry again.

Favorite Edwin moment? Either 03 or BH?

Oh god that's a hard one... Considering I love every moment the two of them are on screen together but I will try, (also note I'm not including the most well-known, iconic moments aka gun scene/proposal, etc.) Just to keep the variety a little, I'm gonna focus more on moments that I believe have very high significance to their relationship but simply don't get talked about nearly enough. (Not in particular order)

1. This moment, especially in the manga makes me very very soft, in the page before this one we see ed being all miserable by himself, he goes to call winry (who is also being all miserable by herself) and I really do love the approach of this moment as it is not Ed trying to comfort Winry after Hughes' death nor bringing up the topic at all, since he himself doesn't know what else he could say about it, on top of the fact that he feels responsible for what happened to him, instead, he just tries to make sure winry doesn't go without eating because it would do her no good, and attempts to leave, but then she just takes his hand and leads him into her room and his face as she does so is just so utterly adorable... I love how soft that panel is, and how despite Ed not being one to comfort her she is still non-verbally asking him to stay, because she needs him by her side in those moments, and his presence alone is enough, and then, despite how he had just eaten he still accepts the apple pie Winry made because she put so much of her heart and her effort into it. And once he sees the tears gathering in her eyes he is simply physically incapable of saying no to her.

2. I think I've talked about these panels before on here, something very interesting to me is how the first panel shows ed admitting he always saw Winry as someone so upbeat and cheerful, to the point it is easy for him to forget how much pain she's actually been internalizing the whole time, and then scolding himself for not understanding her feelings at all. And then you have Winry seeing right through Ed, saying she knows he is just trying hard to be tough (and that he is an idiot, *cough*). The thing is, Winry has seen Ed at his worst, she was there taking care of both him and Al when they had lost everything and Ed was struggling under the weight of his guilt and pain, she saw him crying and sobbing everyday, she even mentions that at nights he just couldn't stop moaning from the pain and fever automail caused him. And on the other hand, Ed had been thinking quite the opposite about Winry, because she was always there being a rock for both him and Al even after having lost her family herself, she was there, always smiling for them and supporting his every step with such strenght he couldn't even imagine she was simultaneously grieving as well. Ed always saw Winry's strenght, but she always knew his weakness all too well.

3. Self-explanatory, I'm a sucker for edwin parallels: she thinks of him while she's dying, he thinks of her while he is fighting to stay alive. They are obsessed with each other, next one.

4. THIS MOMENT, GOD. “seeing it made me realize I couldn't go home”, “I want to be able to help you, so your road's not so hard” this whole scene is just so overlooked it hurts, cause it just goes to show Winry's love and dedication to Ed, and how his determination and resolve inspire her own, she is always looking to improve in any ways she can to help him, Ed literally is able to walk and to continue his journey because of her, (and he reminds it to her in one of her darkest moments) and I just think it's amazing how they're both always challenging each other under different circumstances, this is just one of them, with Winry declaring she is gonna push herself to be the fucking best she can so she can be there for him. (Also his sudden self-awareness and blush when he realizes he is staring at her smile... *blows them up with dynamite*)

5. Again, self-explanatory. Absolutely fucking love some good male rage when his boo is threatened, Bradley didn't even have to lay a finger on her and this guy was ready to strangle him right there. (Also Olivier's entire speech in BH saying Ed's eyes were “desperate” and of “a boy who would do anything to protect the things he loves” when he refused to tell her anything about the homunculi because Winry was a hostage, even tho he knew Olivier could have chopped him in little pieces just because of that. <3

Damn apparently I can't add more images lmao but basically this whole thing they unspokenly have going on where they give each other an item that belongs to the other so they keep it as a reassurance/promise they will see each other again: Ed giving winry his red coat after the gun scene, Winry giving Ed her earrings and asking him to keep them safe for her, and even in their very last scene, Winry keeping Ed's white hoodie, the one he wore when he came back home to her. Just. They are so. Yeah.

Believe me I have many more I could go on for hours, I wanted to include some 03 moments too, but it's 1 am and I need sleep so yeah (also forgive any grammar/spelling mistakes on this I really do need to 💤)

You’re welcome! I honestly imagine Husband!Ed and Dad!Ed like a Hughes 2.0 - in the good sense of course, not in the tragic sense. Like I can totally imagine him going to visit Roy sometimes just to a) talk about his beautiful wife and their wonderful children for as long as possible and b) tease Roy about Riza and ask him WHEN he plans to propose to her, if ever (especially if Edwin gets married first which will prob be the case)

And totally agreed on Al - he’ll be the best uncle. He’ll love those kids so much (and I bet Mei will be a really fun aunt too)

Oh and I almost forgot, if you like Royai the most, you’ll be well fed because they have SO many fanfics. And SO much fanart. They are the FMA ship with the most fics on AO3, maybe FFN too. The manga may be a bit lacking there but the fandom content isn’t 😂

YOU'RE SO RIGHT!!!!!!!!! I think he's the most annoying, sweetest dad in the whole world. He won't stop playing with his kids, hugging them, and crying if he has to go for a while. He says he is not like that or as emotional as Hughes but Al mentions it once and it's stuck in his mind forever. And look, it's not a bad thing to love the people around you okay <33 And he definitely keeps teasing Roy about Riza and,,, Those two are complicated. I just know he'd tell Roy about proposing to Winry and Roy instantly would go crazy because "this kid can't do this shit first. I need to be the one doing it first" because the beef these two have is amazing. But he's a bit of a failguy so you can imagine how that plays out. And Al and May??? Those kids love it every time those two come over. This family is just adorable.

No, yeah, I figured I'd be well-fed. It's really funny because my friend (the one I watch anime with and the one who showed me Fmab) and I usually go through the main Ao3 tags in the fandom like mid-show?To see the most popular tags just because. I mean, he goes through the tag and tells me the ships without spoiling anything lmao. The thing is- I knew from the start there was a lot of Royai content and I was like "?? That's surprising. Idk. Aesthetically they don't look like the type of couple to have that many fanfics and fanbase" and then I watched the show and I completely understand why everybody needs to consume Royai content because if I don't I'll probably die. They live in my mind rent free.

Damn, I remember the first time I watched FMA 03, when I was 16 or 17, I stayed up until 1 am to finish it, and today, watching episodes 38 through 42 turned me into such an emotional mess that I have to take a break lmao what happened??? My own emotional traumas, that's what happened

In episode 38, when Ed and Al are fighting, Al drenches Ed in water and he says "it's going to rain!!!" and I'm like haha no don't try to pull a Mustang on me I know this episode won't make me cry and GUESS WHAT the flashback with Trisha convincing Ed to go and find Al so they can talk things out and Al looking so happy that Ed isn't upset with him anymore it's so cute I CRIED

I need -- no, I DEMAND a spin-off series where Winry and Scziezka solve murder mysteries together (I'd love to write it myself but I know I'm not nearly good enough at coming up with mystery stories lol), they're adorable I'm so happy they totally get together post CoS

Martel's death hits SO MUCH HARDER than I remembered holy shit, she and Al actually got close, we see more of her, her death is so horrific and hearing sweet sweet baby boy Alphonse cry just BROKE MY HEART I never wanted to hug an armor so badly

Scar's brother's last moments, the way he looks so terrified and desperate to protect his little brother from Kimblee and Scar being so devastated when he dies I just-- *clenches fist*

Sloth using Ed's PTSD against him that's so UNFAIR; also I was thinking that I was a bit disappointed that this anime did not include the nightmare that Ed has at some point in the manga where he sees his mom saying "why didn't you make me right" etc but this is it, this is this scene, and it's worse because he's hearing it for real, he is very much awake, he has the real voice of his mom in his ears and she's saying this to him and I'm-- *clenches fist harder*

Rose's story, I'm still so mad, she deserves all the happiness in the world

I used to never really care about Scar but I have learned the errors of my way as I now realize he is actually one of the best characters in this goddamn series, even with the orb of knowledge and the three arm losses, and Mangahood!Scar being much more villainized and ending up working with the military will never come even CLOSE to 03!Scar using his last bit of strength to save Alphonse to honor his love for his lost brother and take his ultimate revenge on those who murdered his people in the goal of protecting oppressed people, all of this while an epic music is playing (honestly it even feels like Ed is made to be seen as an obstacle as he tries to prevent the soldiers from entering Liore lol)

We're finally entering the "Rewrite" era of the show and I had forgotten how much it rocks (Ed's hair animation at the beginning fhjkfhkdhjk)

I only have 9 episodes left but between Lust and Sloth in the upcoming episodes I'm not even sure I'll be able to watch it all in one go lol. Still excited to see more of Winry and Scziezka and remembering how much Hohenheim is absolutely useless in this x)

what was that anon on? Some of the characters in 03 are a little more fleshed out, but all of them are very one-dimensional (I mean they genuinely played into the "womaniser bastard" Mustang thing). Winry and Riza are barely characters. Winry is more of an exposition character for Ed and Roy than an actual character of her own the way Arakawa intended for her to be. The relationships between the characters are either nonexistent or are a cheap imitation of their canon relationships (you can see this especially with Mustang and his team). Lust had some more screenitme, but ultimately she did nothing the whole show and then died after randomly wanting to become human I... and then some characters are given more focus that ultimately don't need it or that just feels pointless in the end like Rose, Sheska, Barry or Shou. I guess you could see it as a case of quality over quantity but overall it feels like the 03 writers couldn't juggle the cast as well as Arakawa did. Which makes sense since it's a case of actually writing these characters vs someone else doing their own take on them.

Also this may be a hot take, but the Nina plot isn't actually written better in 03. One thing the fandom HAS to understand once and for all is that : Nina is not a character we the audience get attached to and feel deeply. She is a character that Edward and Alphonse get attached to and for that we font need to actually SEE it. It can happen off screen. We can see it in the manga and in Brotherhood that it wasn't just one day. They spent several days going there. And Ed clearly remembered how he felt as a child seeing Hohenheim working in his office so HE got sentimental and saw himself in Nina.

Ninas arc works so well in Brotherhood and the manga because it lasts what it's supposed to last and isn't dragged out for drama. Dedicating more time to certain issues doesn't always make them better, sometimes issues were resolved swiftly for a reason. You understand that she was important to them and that not being able to help her moved Ed and Al, but especially Ed who in the beginning was referring to alchemists as the closest to God. And we can see how it weighted on him in his speech before the Truth. It doesn't matter if we cry or not, only that we understand her impact on the main characters. She gets these independent teenage boys to drop the maturity and remember that they're children. She's a brief glimpse of something they lost, and then she's gone, and that's why it matters. The fact that they couldn't do anything to help her becomes part of the brothers' driving force throughout the story and beyond. Nina's death may have seemed meaningless, but Ed and Al deliberately give it a meaning.

Im sorry for the long rant, but this has been bugging me since forever. This is what the fandom, especially the 03 widows need to get. Nina wasn't made for the audience, we dont need to know more about her as a character to understand she was important to the boys. And besides what did an episode about childbirth have to do with what ultimately happenes to Nina and Maes? And Ed and Al are 12 during that 03 episode and Nina is what 6? Children with no frame of reference for anatomy would do nothing but make Gracia's situation worse. In Brotherhood Winry and the boys are older teens and Winry is both a young woman and has studied her parents medical textbooks. Her presence made sense.

I'm not really sure which anon you're referring to since I'm assuming you're talking about someone who came into my inbox years ago when I was at the height of my 03 Salt Brigade. Regardless, everything you say is true lol

The problem with 03 is it's an anime that started as the manga was just really starting to get its footing plot-wise. I'm not sure how far along Arakawa was, but since FMA was a monthly manga series, she gave Bones her blessing to just do whatever the heck they wanted with the plot.

That's why everything is so different. They only had a handful of characters to work with and small pieces of the story's puzzle, so they just kinda wrote their own canon-divergent fanfic.

To further that comparison, I want to compare it to this Fairy Tail fanfic I read a looooong time ago that was written...probably around the time the Oracion Seis arc was being written maybe? I don't remember, but I do remember trying to read it during the Grand Magic Games arc and felt so disconnected from the way the characters were written and interacted.

That's how 03 was for me right after finishing the manga/brotherhood--there's a major disconnect with the characters and their relationships. They didn't have Riza's backstory, so she's just a stoic badass female character who doesn't really do much other than follow Roy around. Winry does stuff, but they aren't sure what more she can do other than do mechanical stuff, so they shove her into some Nancy Drew plotline with Sheska, who is more invested in Hughes's death here than she ever was in the original. And of course, they took the traits we already knew of Ed, Al, Roy, etc., and just kinda turned that up to 11. Overall, 03 really is just a different experience...

As for Nina, her character and the conflict surrounding her death in 03 is also a product of this disconnect. I guess the writers thought her death was SO IMPORTANT to the boys that it deserved to be brought up every chance they got, including bringing back Shou and...trying to redeem him I guess??? It's so weird, because as you said, Nina's death was important in the manga, but the audience didn't need it to be hammered into us.

Ed and Al don't forget Nina after it happens, they carry that burden with them and try to act accordingly afterwards. Ed even mentions it again when he's facing Truth and gives up his alchemy. He's not God, he's just a human who couldn't save one little girl.

That line is the whole point of FMA. You can have all this power, but in the end you're just a simple human being. But there isn't any shame in that because humans can do so many amazing things. It gets brought up in Rush Valley when Winry delivers the baby. Ed admires Winry because she's able to do something he can't do--help a woman give birth. Creating and Bringing life into this world without the use of alchemy is WONDERFUL to Edward. He can't do that with alchemy, and the first and last time he actually tried it, it led to him getting mutilated. So seeing Winry give people their lives back through automail prosthetics, and even using her medical knowledge to bring a life into this world ROCKS HIS WHOLE WORLD!

I honestly forgot Nina was present during Gracia's labor lmao. I don't really get the point of it either. I do remember feeling that aforementioned disconnect watching though, because the lesson of the beauty of life was introduced so early and not when Winry is present. Like, it's a really good message, but why now when Ed's barely started his journey? I don't know, I've long since stopped trying to understand the writing choices of 03.

4. If you could put this character in any other media, what would you put them in? Hamlet. I want to see him yell at Hamlet, even though he probably wouldn't listen. That being said, I don't think Ed would try to get Hamlet to kill the king any sooner, because he wouldn't believe the ghost story if it got to him. There are a lot of other options I could've picked, but I had the most to say about this one!

15. What's your favorite ship for this character? I'm not too into romantic ships with Ed, to be honest! I love the tragic dynamic him and Winry have in 03/CoS, even if I don't actively ship it--him pushing her away after the Barry stuff, her crying for the brothers' sake, and of course that hug in CoS. (THEY DIDN'T EVEN GET TO SAY GOODBYE! THEY JUST HAD TO ACCEPT IT!!!) It's one of the things about 03 that makes me insane because it could've gone right for them in some other world, but the chance to have that relationship safely and securely is one of the many things Ed has had to sacrifice. I'm not sure if Ed was in love with Winry, but he really did like her at some point (at the very least!), and he never really got to know if anything more would've come from that.

Generally, I'm much more interested in the relationship between Ed and Al, but 03 EdWin is crushing and sobering to think about in a way that just hits different sometimes.

22. If you're a fic reader, what's something you like in fics when it comes to this character? Something you don't like? I fortunately haven’t read any fics that do his character badly, but I haven’t read many fics yet. My favorite little thing I’ve seen him do in a fic so far is introspect a little bit—Al is largely the more introspective one of the Elrics, but Ed has his moments, and I like seeing fics represent that!

I just saw a post that brought up the fact that Ed totally has to have a scar from that time in Brotherhood when he got impaled, and I was like "oh I totally forgot that was a thing" and my fiance didn't quite hear me so I told him about the post and he thought they meant that time in 03 when Envy was a dick because he forgot about Brotherhood too. (I watch more 03 than Brotherhood because I personally think Envy is hotter in it, the Homunculi have more depth of character, and it was my original FMA jam so it holds a special place in my heart) That led to me reminding him and then this bit of shower/gremlin thoughts on my part:

1.) Envy was very rude for stabbing Ed in the chest.

2.) A bonding opportunity for them was missed by him doing so.

a.) Ed could've been like, "Man, I don't really like our dad all that much either, to be honest."

Envy could've been like, "Oh, God, he's the fucking worst"

And Ed would be like, "I know, right?!"

i.) They'd just be sitting there, bonding over their mutual dislike of Hohenheim, but it would be super awkward because it's all happening in that city under Central.

ii.) Gluttony is still eating Al

iii.) Al's like, "Bro, what the hell? I'm literally going to die here"

iv.) Dante's like, "Wait, no, Envy, you actually improving your dumpster fire mental health is not how this was supposed to go, knock that shit off i still need a minion that won't eat me on sight"

v.) Rose is mind controlled into oblivion

vi.) Her baby's crying because, let's be real, he messed himself forever ago and no one seems to fucking care

3.) The last couple episodes are legit just Ed and Envy bashing Hohenheim for not being able to handle situations involving his offspring in a proper and considerate manner, and Envy calling Dante the worst mom in the history of Amestris.

a.) Eventually, they figure out how to stop Gluttony from eating Al and use the Stone to get his body back.

b.) Al thinks the whole thing is super awkward because Envy and Ed are getting along, and he legit can't process that specific level of buggery right now.

c.) The series ends with Winry freaking out about there being a Homunculus around, Pinako being totally nonplussed because she's old and nothing bugs her anymore, Al slowly coming to terms with the fact that they appear to be stuck with Envy for the foreseeable future, Ed and Envy being total bros with eachother, and Den being nominated Best Good Girl In Amestris.

4.) This is better than the original ending and I will hear no other opinion

i keep remembering the scene where king bradley is revealed to be wrath in brotherhood, aka when he says that he was fucking pissed at elicia crying for hughes during his funeral (something like his hands were shaking not bc of sadness, but bc he was angry), and how other characters are appalled by said reaction.

the way that scene is executed is so bad, like. it's so fucking cheesy, the word choice and the commotion, but i also dislike that wrath - not only the character but the sin itself - is resumed to this. that he just gets angry or annoyed at everything. they expect you to be shocked and repulsed that someone could ever get pissed at a grieving child, but it feels forced.

i'm very aware that character depth isn't bh's forte, but there are scenes where it tries to be emotional. some of them work (i think my favorite is when ed sees al's human body for the first time in years), but since it's a generic shounen that wants you to be interested in the plot more than anything, then most emotional moments don't rlly hit you, whether happily or tragically. the first episodes are worse, since bh expects you to have seen fma 2003 priorly, therefore hughes' and, dare i say, nina's deaths don't hurt that much, because you barely spent any time with these characters to grow any sort of attachment to them.

and even then, the actual emotional moments only focus on the white characters. the ishvalans are just there to validate their pain and their "goodness", and in turn scar is villainized for taking justice in his own hands. even in his backstory episode, after losing his brother, all his other loved ones and his people, he's gruesomely dehumanized in his state of grief, becoming a monster that then kills two innocent white doctors. and in the end, all of this is about winry's feelings, not scar's. this is about whether or not she'll forgive him, and not about the fact that he survived a fucking genocide.

brotherhood tries rlly fucking hard to be touching tale, a deep political commentary, and while it may be exciting, it ultimately doesn't deliver any of these things.
