I find the Da’shain Aiel, and later Tuatha’an, “Way of the Leaf” to be equal parts fascinating and infuriating. To swear off any form of violence is, on the surface, a noble thing. It takes enormous courage to face oppression and brutality and still refuse to spill blood in return, no matter how justified it would seem. It is a kind of radical hope: a belief that suffering can be endured without perpetuating the same cycle of violence.

But the more I sit with it, the more I cringe.

Because individual people, especially women, are sacrificed at the altar of the group’s ideal. The Way of the Leaf demands endurance, not justice. It demands survival of the soul at the expense of the body. And in doing so, it allows systemic rot to fester unchecked. In a world that grows harsher, crueller, more violent by the day, clinging to absolute pacifism becomes less a courageous stand and more a death sentence; not just for oneself, but for those who cannot choose for themselves. Sometimes, a worthy stance against systemic violence means fighting back, literally. Sometimes, peace must be defended, not merely endured.

Maigran. Colline. Rhea. Kirin.

Girl pay the greatest price for the Da’shain Aiel’s stubbornness. Young girls brutalized and harmed, while the adults around them tell themselves that nonresistance is the higher virtue. And who decides this? Men. It is men who are the leaders, the ones who set the path and demand the rest follow it. It is old men who decide that young girls are not worth fighting for.

The scene where Lewin and the other boys find Maigran and Colline is chilling. As a woman reading it, the signs are immediately clear: torn dresses, bruised bodies, vacant, hollow stares. These girls were not merely kidnapped; they were sexually assaulted. And what makes it even more horrifying is the realization that the girls’ fathers have already made peace with this. They have decided, whether consciously or not, that their daughters’ suffering, their daughters’ bodies, are an acceptable sacrifice for the sake of an ideal. That preserving the Way of the Leaf is more important than protecting their own children. It is disgusting. And it is the price of clinging to a long dead dream.

How poignant than that it is young Lewin, a boy not yet fully molded by their poisoned ideals, who first dares to question what the others accepted without thought. Why should he sacrifice his sister? Why is her life worth less than an unattainable ideal? It is a simple, instinctive rebellion, born not of logic or philosophy, but of love and anger. And it changes everything. Through Lewin’s defiance, and through Morin’s later courage to break away from a system that demanded women’s silent suffering, a new path is forged. A path where women no longer endure violence in the name of ideals that can no longer be realized. A path that will one day give birth to the Maidens of the Spear.

So far, this has been Robert Jordan’s most nuanced and brilliant critique on the intersection between culture and gender dynamics: so often, female victimhood becomes the invisible backbone of cultural practice. That women’s pain is not just collateral damage, but the silent currency that traditions are built and maintained upon. A world that preaches passive endurance without accountability does not merely fail women. It feeds on them.

About Genshin Impact and the technology of Teyvat

We get a kamera at the start of the game from Xu for the “Snapshot” world quest. In it Xu remarks that the kamera is a new invention from Fontaine.

Xu shows surprise at the Traveler knowing what it is, this supports the idea of the kamera being a new invention meaning it’s pricey and rare to have at this point. Later on, on the Traveler’s journey, we get quests to take pictures of things. This could mean that the kamera is becoming more widespread a time goes on, or just the knowledge of it.

During the 4.3 Fontinalia Festival the focus was placed of films. This was an attempt by the Fontaine Film Association to introduce films to the populace, making the main point of the festival the films produced for it.

This would give idea to films still being a new invention, as they aren’t widespread, just like how the kamera was at the start of the game which was about 3 years ago. And based off of Furina’s Character Demo “Furina: All the World’s a Stage” we can assume that the films recorded were black and white in quality. Unless, we assume that the mini-games during the 4.3 “Roses and Muskets” event were canonical in the way they showed the film quality. No noise was shown in either, but one was in color the other not.

This gives us an estimate of where — technological advancement vice — Teyvat is compared to our world. Films started becoming a thing at the end of the 1800s and start of the 1900s. Colored film started showing up around the 1930s, but became more accessible and profitable later on. Films started getting sound added to them around the mid-to-late 1920s. This gives us an estimate of around the start of the 1900s placement vice.

Now I’d like to bring up Khaenri'ah. It was heralded as “the pride of humanity” as said by Dainslief. Khaenri'ah has more than one notable scientific aspect linked to it, one of these being the “Field Tillers” aka Ruin Machines. Ruin Machines vary from “simple” Ruin Guards to a Ruin Serpent(s).

Ruin Machines seem to have been around for a while, since the Archon War even given the Ruin Hunter stored by Guizhong in a domain. This means that the technology may have been around for 1000s of years, likely being used as a defense method during the war and preserved thereafter. The knowledge of this technology didn’t spread much beyond Khaenri'ah, this showing through how the people of Teyvat started calling the Ruin Machines “Ruin Machines” after they spread globally after the Cataclysm.

Around Sumeru there exist three giant Ruin Machines called “Ruin Golems”. These were giant mecha style machines were piloted by a crew of people, and — get this — include a colored screen. By screen I mean the type of screen you’re viewing this through, footage from outside the Ruin Golem being broadcasted to the screen to allow the people piloting to see where they’re going or what they’re doing.

During the “Vimana Agama” world quest that was apart of the Aranyaka quest line we can go into the Ruin Golem in Devantaka Mountain by Port Ormos. There we can use the actual screen and see through it. This being a machine that has sat unused for hundreds of years. And its screen is still in working condition.

So, simply put. Khaenri'ah was very mechanically advanced.

BUT!

I have yet to mention the Terminal Viewfinders in Fontaine. You know, those eye ball machines you use to transfer energy to terminals in puzzles in the Fontaine Research Institute area. You know, the machines with working colored screens. Mind you this isn’t technology you’re able to find all through out Fontaine, only in certain areas usually accompanied by a researcher from the Institute. So it would be more comparable to machines found in laboratories and not accessible to common people.

But still. At the very least Fontaine is near the mechanical advancements of Khaenri'ah either a few hundred to thousands of years ago.

And I have yet to mention everything going on in King Deshret’s places in the Sumeru desert. And I’m not going to go into more than this mention because that is a headache I have yet to even get around to in game.

TL;DR Khaenri'ah was very technologically advanced to the point of hundreds of years later working colored screen technology. Fontaine is around that point with the Research Institute while normal day to day people are around silent movies in advancement, while I have no idea what’s going on with the Sumeru Desert.

keeping myself from speaking too much on Adam and Ronan’s dislike of Henry here because I know I’ll go more into it and everything involving Henry when we get to TRK, but it really sucks so much that these dynamics being set up could be really interesting, like the exchange between Adam and Henry where Adam clearly sees Henry as a frivolous person who doesn’t have *real problems* is very revealing about some of his flaws in how he sees himself as an underdog but isn’t good at recognizing that in people who have very different experiences than he does, he can only for example see how Henry has privileges over him for being rich and doesn’t consider that Henry experiences forms of oppression that he doesn’t from being an moc (there’s also something there imo about the parallels and contrast in their presentation of and relationship to their queerness and how that effects both Adam and Ronan’s reactions to Henry although it’s obviously unintentional because Maggie doesn’t think of Henry as queer and doesn’t give much thought to how being queer effects Adam beyond that he’s into Ronan who said that…anyway). There are a lot of interesting things to explore re: Adam and Henry as foils (kind of going along with the Ronan and Blue as foils dynamic) and the Pynch vs Henry dynamic but the way it’s done is ultimately deeply embarrassing I will save more of my rants for later but. Yeah.

So uh, look. I’m not a huge fan of Neil Gaiman as a person, mostly due to some things he’s said, done, or not done in the past (still enjoyed plenty of his books and a big fan of Good Omens with Terry.) but some of the shit people online are saying to him are mildly-to-extremely inappropriate and you need to reset some boundaries on yourselves. Take this from someone who was mildly popular in a fandom for a while there. It can be genuinely scary to receive threatening messages out of the blue from a complete fucking stranger. Especially when you have no point of reference about what they’re threatening you about, if it’s even a joke, etc.

Just because he’s made himself accessible to fans does not mean you can treat him like your Tumblr bestie with violent, threatening inside jokes. He’s not your buddy. You can’t lol your way out of sending threatening messages to a stranger. This is literally the reason your past faves stopped interacting with fans online. (Trust me, I was in the Marvel fandom when Loki/Tom arrived.) This will end as it usually does, with him being forced to leave online spaces and become inaccessible again. And then y’all will bitch and whine that he thinks he’s ‘too good’ for you or whatever and the cycle starts all over again with someone else famous.

Please. Please just learn to fucking behave. Be a weird (affectionate) and violent gremlin in your personal blog spaces or discord or wtfever. Don’t send it to a public figure just trying to have a good time in the fandom. Ok? Can we try to be better this time?

DON’T FORGET TO FRONT-DATE YOUR FICS!!!

now, you might be asking, “tizona, what does that even mean???”

well, i’m here to help you with that!!

FRONT-DATING is when you change the internal date of when your fic was posted in order for it to show up when someone searches for the most recent fics.

generally, this is looked down upon because people that do this frequently are hoarding the top slots of a fandom or tag’s page in order to get more views.

HOWEVER, front-dating is really important if you are participating in events that involve UNREVEALED works.

why?

when you add a fic to a collection that’s UNREVEALED, the internal date of your fic will be the date you posted it, NOT the date it was revealed. this means that when all the fics get revealed, your fic will NOT show up in the fandom(s) or tag listings because ao3 thinks you posted your fic a While Ago.

so, in order to combat this, we have to front-date our fics to the most recent day. due to the fact that you can’t front-date to the future, you’ll have to wait until the final day, or until everything’s revealed.

okay, how?

great question!

first, you’re going to want to navigate to your fic and click on the handy edit button. you won’t be able to find your fic on your profile since it’s anonymous currently, so you’re going to have to navigate to the collection and scroll till you find your fic. THEN click edit.

next! you want to scroll down past the tags section, past the preface section, and all the way to the ASSOCIATIONS section. (that’s the third section, and where you typically set the language and skin)

once you’re there, scroll down ALMOST to the bottom of that section. there will be a button that says “set a different publication date” right above where you set the language.

click on that checkbox!!! there should be a drop-down for you to select a day, month, and year. set it to the most current date—AKA TODAY! (or you can wait all the way up until THE DEADLINE)

once again, ao3 does not allow you to front-date into the future, so the farthest you can go is the present. (it does, however, let you BACK-date as far as you please. that’s not what we’re doing here, though.)

once you’ve front-dated your fic, scroll ALL THE WAY DOWN and click post! that will save your changes :)

and success!! you have front-dated your fic!
