My favorite wigs

Ankle is being a diva again (no walk, just sit), and I'm chatty.

Surprise! My favorite wigs are becoming more expensive - but there are some affordable ones, too.

Leekeworld: many available in-stock from Denver Doll Emporium (DDE). They run about $30 each, but there are a few on sale. I like them because they are soft, on the thinner side (so they lay nice and flat on the doll's head), and they are sewn to an elastic wig cap. I prefer size 7-8 for almost all of my big girls, cuz 8-9 seems a little too big for most heads (exceptions: Volks, Domuya, Supiadoll, and Little Monica. Those girls got some big noggins).

This is a particular favorite (Blend Misty 7/8):

This 60cm-1/3 size brown-black wig from AliExpress for $6.79 currently. It's thin and incredibly soft. AliExpress wigs are very touch-and-go: for the most part, they require significant alterations (thinning, bang trimming), but considering how cheap they are, I'm willing to risk it to find the occasional gem. Wefts are sewn to an elastic wig cap. Currently on Leona:

That's a silver Leekeworld wig on Doll Chateau Bella on the Y-Body-06 in size 6/7, by the way. Imomodoll Dio/Rei is wearing a size 9-10 silver wig that I'm pretty sure I got on sale from DDE.

Iplehouse: made for their dolls specifically. Wefts are sewn to an elastic wig cap. Lots of folks complain that the wigs are too thick and look fake, but I (a) don't care, and (b) love the vibrant colors. Aaliyah is wearing size 8-9 IHW_M075 in Sienna (currently $16.10 plus shipping):

Natural fibers. HOOOO boy, if I thought Leekeworld wigs were pricey, moving into the natural fiber world has been pure sticker shock. Getting one of these for $30 is a STEAL. They tend to run in the $50 and up range. Natural fiber wigs are generally made of animal hair such as alpaca or mohair (goats). A big part of the price is the - well, destink process, to put it bluntly. Goats are stinky. The fibers need to be washed and washed and washed to remove dirt (goats are dirty), stink, and funk. Then dyed, if you want a color other than white or brown. Then you gotta brush the hair and glue it into wefts. A buddy told me about the process after buying unprocessed mohair. No, thank you. I'll just pay someone else, if there's no objections.

However, because these are natural fiber wigs, you don't have the problems that come with styling synthetic (plastic) hair. Human hair dye, curling/flat/crimping irons, and hair products are all good for this kind of hair.

You DO need to worry about the integrity of these wigs. They're frequently glued to hard caps, so no water/wet-wet stuff at the roots. The hair is super fine, so no hard tugging, or you'll pull it out of the wig. But man, are they pretty, and so so soft.

Like custom dolls, outfits, or shoes, these are generally available only from independent artists. Mass-producing these would be a total PITA. And let's be real: you've got to be pretty dedicated to deal with all that goat poop. (Yes, goats have poop on their hair. FREQUENTLY.)

⌝ JC could think the look was tacky all he liked, they'd established pretty early on in their friendship they had very stylistic differences, but mostly Bella was content building the vampire home of her dreams. She didn't need Nick telling her everything had to be pink, or Valentin's cream coloured rooms he exposed to the public to look normal. She wanted to be the vampiric equivalent of Jayne Mansfield, maybe she'd even put carpet in her bathroom - she wouldn't but the point was she was going to do whatever she wanted.

⌝ Bella held the vampire for a moment, eventually letting go as they stepped inside. "Yeah, I feel like a chateau probably has fifty rooms on this place," she laughed of the estate. Yes, it was probably more than a home but it wasn't like staying in a castle. Bella had reigned herself in a little. "I am excited though, I haven't lived anywhere this big since I was first turned, still so much smaller, but I burnt that place to the ground because I was having, you know, new born emotions. Hopefully I don't go mad here too and just decide to put some candles too close to my curtains," Bellamy joked, partially.

⌝. The woman was nervous about living alone, she didn't do well with it. It was hard not to feel overwhelmed by her loneliness, to feel abandoned and unloved, when she laid in a large bed, in a large space, with no one to show her otherwise. Bella knew she was never going to get anywhere though if she kept inviting dudes to live with her because she was lonely though. That didn't mean she hadn't bought one of the estates closest to her sires however so if she did start to feel lonely she could just drive a few estates down and crawl into his bed.

⌝ "I hired some people to maintain me, decided if I'm not playing human make believe with some guy then why not," she shrugged her shoulders. Her hair stylist would be maintaining the colour, an act that would need to happen every few days but Bellamy was content with it, she deserved to be pampered and obviously dying blonde hair brown wasn't exactly hard. "Besides, everyone needs a break up hairstyle, right? Maybe I'll go back to blonde eventually but for now... You want to come play in my glam room, tell me what changes you've made that are less aesthetic based.

⌝. Much like JC she was hyper aware of how long it had been since they'd seen one another. "Last time we texted was like right after that shit show at the gala, you were dancing with one of my blood dolls, I hope you haven't drained him dry because he has yet to come back from his time off," Bellamy joked, not actually particularly concerned if anything had happened to Matthew. He was nice enough but Bella really had only had a few conversations with him at work where they'd never really seen eye to eye.

the estate hadn’t been alive for long, even jean-claude knew that the owner of the great home had recently come back despite never seeing them - the pawn shop was a great place for gossip after all. he never would’ve expected it to be bellamy who would be moving in, though as he approached the vampire noted the outside being painted black with care. personally he thought it was a little tacky but, if it made her happy then that was what mattered.

he grinned as he stepped over the entrance, gaze sweeping over every surface. “that’s so rude,” the vampire tutted at her greeting, immediately hugging his friend back. the two hadn’t had a real catch up in what felt like forever - the last time j.c had seen her, she was still blonde. brunette suited her well, and she smelt amazing. who was this, and what did she do with bellamy barnes?

“i wouldn’t call this a home, i’d call it a manor,” jean-claude replied with a laugh as he pulled back to really look at her. she hadn’t changed in the sense that vampires simply didn’t but, there was something different about her. good different, though. “when i was younger my father owned a chateau in the country. this is somewhat comparable,” it was probably owned by some middle class americans or english who had transformed it into a hotel or rental property. horrific thoughts.

So, if anyone was wondering...Little Monica Sophia is just about a perfect SD shell for my DC Bella’s character, Lulu. Like, she’s so Lulu, just very much, no doubt about it. I’m??? confused about how well this works. Their skin color is different, as little Lulu is a bit darker and she has distinctly more orange in her tan, but it still works. This is specifically Little Monica’s old tan and this Sophia is the only one I’ve seen around in that color. Does anyone know of any others? I’m curious as to whether she might be the only one in existence! If so, how fortuitous for me!

Big Lulu will be getting repainted despite the fact that she has a lovely faceup by her original owner Komorebidolls on insta. Also, I am this girl’s 4th owner! She was made in 2016, which, incidentally, was also the year little Lulu was made, though I didn’t receive her until January.

Anyway, big Lulu will have a look similar to little Lulu’s previous face up, more natural and all that. Little Lulu will be staying the way she is...for now.

Months and months later I have finally made my doll new clothes

And managed to unfortunately stain a bit of her body in the process with the black fabric so I'll have to clean that up later

And because of that I made some super basic underclothes to hopefully prevent future staining

I'm very happy with how it all turned out. I still need to add snaps to the back of the dress but for now a safety pin is good enough.

BJD End of Year 2020 tag!! Fashionably late as always, but hey 🤷 All sculpts and a short questionnaire under the cut.

1. End of year doll family photo: shown above!  In the photo we have... my 3 msds in the back row, from left to right: Void-Hime (Loongsoul Wanwan), STARCHASER (green Doll Chateau Bella) and Yellow Jacket, my partner’s muscular Model Delf LUTSDOLL body waiting on his head to arrive. The next line starting from the far left is my still-around 21cm obtisu Hye-Rin (Nano Haruka) and 36cm Pisces (Doll Chateau Wanda). The rest are YOSDs! Pyxis (green Gem of Doll Cia), Mana (Dollzone Niuniu, who I need to dye), Olivia (Dollzone Candice, so nice to see her together ;_; ), Unnamed (Bobobie Isabella on a DZ youth body), and Cecilia (Doll Family A Bibi on a Littlefee body). Last but not least are my two floating heads who are waiting on bodies this year- Naelia, Doll in Mind Laia (dreaming/half closed eyes) and Honeybee, my Unoa Sist Bully with a buffdolls headback. 

2. How many dolls did I buy this year? I acquired 5 dolls, one head, and one body. Isabella's new body + Pyxis (October), Olivia's new shell (June), Luna (May), Honeybee's head (April), Mana (march), and Nova (January).

3. Tell us the best thing that happened to you in the doll hobby this year. Despite how messy 2020 was I still managed to score two grails (Nova and Honeybee) within months of each other. That was a little stressing, but also delightful?? +//_//+;;

4. Tell us the worst thing that happened to you in the doll hobby this year. The earthquake in April really freaked me out and now I have a hard time deciding where to display my dolls.. or anything fragile for that matter. 😰 The only other thing I could think of is managing money when sudden releases/sales/discontinuations happen, that’s always a drag no matter the year //laughs

5. Show us your three favorite things you got this year.  pyxis’ silver sneakers, chases’ iridescent jacket (and the silver one they’re wearing tbh), and the cutest halloween skirt for mana.

6. What is your new year’s resolution? I’ll make a whole separate post for this, but the gist of it would be... to continue finishing everyone’s main looks, defeat the wig monster, give bodies to the headless, and layaway the last few wishlist dolls as soon as I am able. And sew as much as possible! (•̀o•́)ง

Did a bunch of faceups this week. The tan ones were also my first time dying dolls! I think they turned out pretty good, all things considered.

I feel like i used the thinnest lines i've ever drawn working on these. It was super focused work and i'm really happy with how they look.
