New guy just dropped

(and in true artist fashion, he doesn't have an actual AU name to call him by yet, because i am indecisive.)

Made this fella during a chat with my friend and wanted to share him somewhere \o/

they mentioned that now, everytime they hear the "hora do café" audio, they think abt Ccino (because of that one video I made a while ago) and this — somehow — spiraled into:

"what if.

Ccino-type sans oc.

but instead of a coffee shop, he had,,,, something else?????????? that could be fun, i think"

so after a bit of rotating the idea inside my brain, we got this guy.

he has small roadside bar/shop/diner thing, sells food and drinks, AND has an overwhelming amount of different types of animals that just sort of. got there. (he is now friends with every single local veterinarian).

at first, it was going to be stray dogs to contrast with how Ccino is usually seen with a lot of cats (since that's where the conversation started, even though he's not really supposed to be Ccino from any AU adjacent timeline) but I thought that it'd be more fun to just say "fuck it" and add whatever animals came to mind.

I will be very honest, he was just supposed to be a silly little sans oc for the funsies, so lore isn't that present at the moment.

the only thing I've thought about adding, is the bar being this weird magical building that can show up on pretty much any AU + be on more than one AU at the same time.

whether or not sans, the shopkeeper, has any control over where and when the bar appears/disappears, he personally finds universes where monsters do not exist (or at least where humans do not know of monsterkind) to be very funny, due to the reactions he often gets from very confused and/or frightened humans.

because of this fact, he has, most likely, become an urban legend someplace somewhere.

-> replacement 1st lieutenant and pilot for Silver Bullets, fresh in from Fort Des Moines, trying to patch up the holes in a crew suffering from the loss of their beloved captain birdie faulkner. hailing from mankato, minnesota, she is a wonderfully receptive listener and stoic presence - but don't go overstepping it with her crew. makes it her very mission that the women of Silver Bullets and captain birdie faulkner are remembered. can play a tune on a trumpet (if warranted).

FRANCIS MONTEZ

-> copilot of Silver Bullets grieving a loss she is taking harder than she thought, wrapped in sorrow and guilt that she tries her best to hide. a good-hearted californian, she wrangles with this new era of her life with the help of replacement pilot, annie bradshaw, and steps up in more ways than one. carries a cigarette pack around like it's strapped to her very being. will give you a nickname that she'll call you any chance she gets.

BESSIE CARLISLE

-> navigator for Silver Bullets, with the brightest smile the sun's ever seen from the skies (says her boyfriend). hailed all the way from queens, new york with the intention to get her hands working on the mechanic floor of a factory and got a gig flying planes instead. got placed in navigation one day and ever since then, has made it her duty to make sure every mission goes right down to the degree.

CARRIE ACHTERBERG

-> german-american bombardier on Silver Bullets making sure the enemy pays in any way they can for the costly damage of a horrid war (enter: norden bombsight). grew up in brooklyn, new york, had some run-ins with bessie carlisle and the two became thick as thieves when working on planes. blowing the enemy to shreds seemed to be the cherry on top.

MARJORIE ‘MARGIE’ HARLOWE

-> flight engineer on Silver Bullets who grew up in a large family with at least four dogs all named after flowers, on the shores of lake michigan, wanting to go to school for physics ever since she felt herself get the knack for mathematics. only up until then, did she find herself on a plane with her cousin (who nearly crashed it) that she then got herself in line for flying in B-17s and looking to the skies above (and calculating vectors from the ground).

PAULINA STAGLIANO

-> italian-american radio operator for Silver Bullets, who came in from philadelphia, pennsylvania with radio operator experience in the WAC before getting the call for a job with captain birdie faulkner, and finding herself up in B-17s on the regular. she's passionate, a loyal friend and if you talk bad about the phillies -it's on sight (usually has sports arguments with kennedy farley - they keep bickering to a minimum).

VIVIAN RATCLIFF

-> hailing from fort collins, colorado, viv ratcliff comes with a wealth of knowledge and experience as a gunner on Silver Bullets, with a father who was in the army and her boyfriend in the navy. 'calm, cool, collected' are the best words to take her in as, usually found collecting flowers after missions for the boys who didn't get a chance to make it home. keeps a tally of german fighters that go down on the wooden pole beside her cot.

KENNEDY FARLEY

-> irish-american gunner on Silver Bullets, opposite viv ratcliff, coming in from boston, massachusetts, raging red sox fan with a family of brothers going on to military or sports (much of the same). close friends with margie harlowe because she 'softens her up a bit', and always willing to stick around for a drinking game or two. passionate friend (margie told you so).

JUDY RYBINSKI

-> polish-american farm girl and turret ball gunner for Silver Bullets from hot springs, north carolina, growing up near the french broad creek, summers spent on the river, catching fish and milking goats for her families business. went hunting with dad a few times, and grew up with her older brothers going off to the military or college and wanted a hand at it all. captain faulkner was her opening (and the person she needs most now).

MARIANNE SALINGER

-> french-american aspiring painter from rochester, new york, now a tail gunner for Silver Bullets. thought she was signing up to paint planes, but ended up finding a knack for guns on turrets and credits captain faulkner for her 'in' on flying. has a pet cat that roams the base as he wishes (he's named frank, after her one true love, frank sinatra), usually getting into trouble by pissing off a husky named meatball.

Rejoice, children, for I have decided that an unhinged rant is in order

I have come to the conclusion that, despite what much of the fandom would like to think, Legolas is, in fact, not a prince. My reasoning to back this up is based on two main pillars: the Woodland Realm’s monarchy system and Legolas’ lack of royal title throughout the books.

In regards to the Woodland Realm/Eryn Galen/Eryn Lasgalen: it was founded when Oropher and Thranduil arrived at the Greenwood with a handful of people and integrated into Silvan society, with the Silvan later making Oropher their king. Now, I can’t find the exact passage that describes Oropher becoming king. It’s not in the Unfinished tales of the Appendix B of The Return of the King; it might be in The Peoples of Middle Earth, but I can’t find a pdf of it to save my life. However, the Tolkien Gateway describes his ascension as him being “taken up by the Elves of the wood as their king” and “taken by the Silvan Elves as their lord” in the pages for Oropher and Mirkwood, respectively. The Thranduil page also uses very similar phrasing.

The implication here is that the Silvan chose Oropher as king, rather than he declaring himself as such, which led me to think that this could very well be taken as Oropher being elected king; and therefore the Woodland Realm would have an elective monarchy. In regards to Thranduil being king after Oropher, I’d chalk it up to a mere coincidence. After Oropher’s death at Dagorlad, Thranduil led Greenwood’s armies for almost the full 7 years of the Last Alliance, so it’d only make sense if he were the one  elected as the next king.

In an elective system, only the person who’s elected holds the title that they’ve been elected for, so there is no Royal Family, or titles adjacent to that of king. In the case of Oropher becoming king, only he would hold a royal title, which means Thranduil would be the son of the king, but not a prince. Later, that same pattern would repeat itself when Thranduil is elected king. Legolas is the king’s son, but that doesn’t grant him any titles or authority.

In fact, Legolas’ lack of titles is something that stands out quite a bit in the books. Despite him being introduced as the son of Thranduil, he’s never once called a prince, and his parentage is never acknowledged by any other character. Even when Aragorn introduces him in Rohan, he does so by calling him “Legolas of the Woodland Realm”, once again ignoring who his father is, and foregoing any weight or influence of name dropping the Elvenking. Sure, it can be argued that in this instance, Aragorn wasn’t sure of where Rohan stands in regards to the war, so revealing Legolas is the child of someone important might be risky, as well as that he emphasised the Woodland Realm to differentiate Legolas from the elves of Lothlórien, whom the people of Rohan distrust; still, it’s quite interesting.

“But what about the queen?” No queen. “Oh, but Thranduil had a child, so he must have had a wife!” Why? Because you believe in the myth of the nuclear family? Can a single man with not a drop of mental health not raise a child alone as though it’s his emotional support crusty white dog? He even followed the guidelines: adopt, don’t shop. “Oh, but the movies!” The Hobbit movies have dealt irreparable damage to Thranduil’s character and nothing they said matters to me. I was in this fandom before they came out, I remember the glory days of Thranduil’s tag on Tumblr and AO3 and, yes, I’m bitter.

Anyway, even if Thranduil were married to whatever “heart of gold, died tragically” OC the fandom has lined up, she wasn’t voted in, so no royal title for her.

But yeah, Legolas isn’t a prince, he’s just some guy who happens to have a very powerful dad and no authority of his own.

I haven't written in weeks but the inspiration hit tonight so here a bit from a new wip- something for Halloween:

Eddie could hear the creak of the tree outside as the wind tumbled through its branches, someone calling for their dog a few doors down and a motorcycle roaring down the street adjacent to his. He could also hear Buck’s heartbeat, its usual slow and steady thump, thump, thump. Normally he would hear Christopher's soft breaths and fluttering heartbeat from the room down the hall but the house is empty tonight.  He can still taste the tequila from the shots they’d decided were a good idea after finishing their usual six pack. The alcohol warming his stomach, making his limbs feel like they belonged to someone else. Without thinking about it, they place themselves on Buck’s broad chest, his skin a contrast to the dark blue button-up Buck decided to wear tonight. Eddie can feel the sharp intake of breath beneath them and his eyes drag themselves up to Buck’s face. His usually pale skin is flushed ever so slightly, confusion dragging his eyebrows together in a look that would be comical if Eddie wasn’t so damn in love with him.  “Eds?” Buck whispers, so quiet that if it weren’t for his enhanced hearing he wouldn’t have heard it. Eddie doesn’t respond, not verbally at least, he just steps in closer, placing his forehead on Buck’s shoulder, face tucked into his neck. Buck’s hands automatically come up to rest on his arms and Eddie thinks just for a moment that he’s going to push him away but instead, Buck’s fingers curl around his biceps, holding him tightly.  Eddie breathes in, taking in Buck’s scent, citrus, honeycomb and sunshine on snow, it’s just as intoxicating as the alcohol. He’s nuzzling into Buck’s neck chasing that scent before he can stop himself. Buck shudders but doesn’t pull away instead, he bares his neck and tries to relax despite the vulnerable position. Buck has to know he’s not going to hurt him, Eddie could never hurt him.  He opens his mouth and sucks in a breath, “Buck…” his name is as sweet as the taste of him on Eddie’s tongue. It so distracting that he forgets what he is going to say and instead, his hands slide up and one around Buck’s neck and into his hair, using the grip to tilt his head so Eddie has better access. Buck gasps, his fingers digging in painfully before relaxing again but Eddie barely registers it, drowning in Buck’s scent until it was just Buck and only him.  Eddie’s teeth and claws lengthen as the primal need takes control, he manages to loosen his grip enough to avoid piercing Buck, the need to protect is just as strong as the need to mark and claim.

Was Ishmael always your favorite from day one, or did Canto 5 swing things in her direction?

So, she wasn't like, my favorite favorite day 1, but I did have a higher opinion of her compared to the rest of the cast (barring Ryoshu and Sinclair as food name oomf was making propaganda about them like a madman), her initial demeanor also gained her extra points because I generally gravitate towards characters that Actually Respect The MC/PC i won't say no to unhinged characters can we at least pretend to be civil during work hours and not treat me like a dog? It makes me sad :(

And then Canto V dropped.

Normally, this wouldn't be. That Big of a deal, if it was in literally any other position I'd just go "oh cool, so that's what happened" and moved on.

Problem: there was probably at least 20 different sleeper agents in my brain. And all of them involved Azur Lane

(Context for confused LCB moots: Azur Lane is Arknights' weirder, hornier cousin set somewhere in a WW2-adjacent period where all of your units are warships given human form known as Shipgirls (official term: KAN-SEN) and you fight against a robotic menace known as the Sirens)

I had this like, entire ramble I wanted to go off on but at some point I didn't know where to take it lmao, but the basic idea is the following:

I got into Azur Lane last year because of spite and (eldritch-ish) pirates (Hello Royal Fortune!)

Got dragged into lore rabbit hole

Got convinced to read eldritch apocalypse fanfiction of Azur Lane (Whispers of Saturn)

Loved the fanfic a lot, started making Pirate shipgirl ocs based off the fic's concept (eldritch creachurr)

First iteration of Whaleship Essex created; whale-like mermaid-siren figure who has albinism and is a little Too trigger happy with whale murder

Made her look like Ishmael LCB because haha funny reference

Devs went fuckshit crazy with the anniversary event; Marco Polo was raining the wrath of God (who, to the surprise of absolutely nobody, was a false god), the god in question was fucking up the world with a weird white membrane (which, now that I think about it, kinda acted like pallidification), the french were getting back together, everything is great

I try to add the false god(s) into the lore timeline of my Azur Lane shit, cue updates happening to Whaleship Essex where she's the only survivor of her group and knows that someone else also survived but blames them for not being able to Do Something about it

New Pirate event happens

Devs stole 2 of my OCs and made them canon (hi, Hind; hi, Galley) and they also happen to be close to Whaleship Essex while they were my OCs

I work around what the Devs have given me and decide that they're in a state of kinda died-but-not-really (long story)

Overall my hype for The Sea™ and eldritch horrors have reached an all time high

omg hello :3 oh gosh there's a lot of them JKLGHLK. They do all have stories! some completed some in the works, it fluctuates over time lol. I should *probably* write it down at some point other than in my friends dms lol. I'll go from least serious story to most serious :333 The cats are Mune, Bea, Jake, and Marvin. Their story is basically just a classic band story but with cats lol. mune and bea are childhood best friends, bea plays guitar and mune sings. They met jake while trying to find someone to play drums for their band. He's the middle child of six, he's used to being pretty quiet until you get him talking about something he likes (like drums, he's a very one note man/pos). Marvin is a friend from school, really very much the impulse control so they need him around lol. Bea knitted him fingerless mittens for the winter so he could still write with them on and now they all call him mittens. (he's a sphinx) hmmm one fun fact about all of them just to round it off (dont want to go overboard lol) Bea: loves to skateboard, knit, room is covered in local band posters Mune: into goth fashion, boba, yoga, and girls/j Jake: likes drums. Likes animal crossing. great with kids Marvin: enjoys colorful patterns, bugs, and swimming the mers are part of a story where mers are just kind of integrated into the natural world, they just exist, but theyre not well studied yet. elhadi is a shark mer, sheyyu is a ray, and spec(pronounced spess) is a deep sea mer, which at this point in evolution has branched off significantly from more shallow water mers(who moreso rely on mimicry). Sheyyu is the oldest and most protective, elhadi is the youngest. They live in the harbor of a small fishing town, all the locals know and respect them. All of them can shift into a semi-humanoid form, although with varying results. Okay snippet of fun fact for each :3 Elhadi: can never stop swimming! she will die :3 likes humans the most. the two braids in her hair represent her two siblings who have died. despite these descriptors she is the most cheerful and friendly lol. Sheyyu: does not like humans except for maybe two. has a scar from a harpoon. strongest of the group, knows how to herd fish. Spec: was experimented so has quite a few scars from that. Likes to swim with elhadi at night to keep her company. likes soft textures okay last one jSKLGH would take a v long time to explain ngl but the JIST of it is scooby doo series turned actual horror, mixed with gravity falls. I'm sure that's not confusing at all/j. We have Logan and Cassius, they're siblings. Logan has visions of the future and Cassius is able to see anyone's 'true form'. that means if you've made a deal with something, if youre something in disguise, ect ect. you cant really hide from him. Ghost is their guy in the chair, he lost his leg in their first expedition out and decided to stick to computers after that. Woke up with no memories one day in the wrong family, still wrestling with that. M has lived in the town it takes place in her whole life, has ties with a lot of the creatures that live in the woods there. okay one fun fact about each sjdkglh Logan: favorite color is pink, has a cat name shadow, shortest in the group Cassius: has a girlfriend named Mickey, dyes his own hair(although not very well lol), tallest in the group Ghost: has a service dog named Juniper, likes making collages, the calmest in the group M: has a creature her family cares over she calls Brother who is vaguely fae adjacent, knows the town like the back of her hand, strongest in the group tysm for asking that was nice to get o ut of my system lol

For the OC event: had an interesting (to me, at least) OC idea for a post-canon child, about 16, who was an adopted orphan (parents died from the Sand Pest) and raised by Artemy and Daniil. Growing up, she had a mix of influences that shaped her understanding of the world--she very much believes in Artemy's methods, knows some of the Kin language, and is generally more in touch with Kin culture, but Daniil also insisted she grow up well-read and with a good education, so she has a fair bit of formal knowledge too (if antiquated, given new books don't reach the town often). She comes from the Clara ending, and I think that'd give her an interesting relationship with death in general, altogether. Being a child who grew up with human sacrifice as the norm.

She's a fairly solitary girl. Keeps to herself, likes to have things to do that don't involve other people too much. She has a small tent at the edge of the Steppe, a little ways off from the graveyard, that she often stays in (sometimes for days at a time). She gathers herbs for Artemy and herself, and makes simple medicines with them (and sells them--her contribution to the household). She has a mutt that she loves dearly; it often accompanies her along her trips out to gather herbs, tend to local cows, and cuddles up with her on cold nights (and on warm nights… and hot nights, sometimes).

At home, she helps take care of the chickens, and some cleaning (she hates cleaning, though, and tries to avoid it). Daniil has been trying to teach her some of his more complicated sciences, but it mostly goes over her head. She thinks his microscope is the coolest thing, though--seeing all those little moving things is like magic to her. She loves curling up next to the couch for family story nights, closing her eyes and listening to the crackling of the fire or the dogs barking outside as one of her fathers narrates all sorts of tales. When she stays in a room, the window is always open. She has some books from Yulia's that she's borrowed a dozen times now stacked neatly on her little shelf, next to haphazardly strewn pages of plant and abstract sketches.

I also had some vague ideas of a plot for her: one day, while out in the Steppe gathering herbs, she accidentally wandered too far and ended up on the wrong stage at the wrong time. Instead of the play she was meant for, she ended up in the play set fifteen years before--the timeline we play in the game. She arrives on the first day, around the same time as Daniil.

A lot happens, but some highlights are: desperately trying to keep the younger versions of her fathers from killing each other; dealing with a Clara-adjacent situation where no one knows where she comes from and at least a few people suspect her of being a shabnak; ending up breaking Kin law by harvesting organs to sell when money gets tight and she has to keep the healers alive if they're to find a cure (she knows they can because they did in her timeline, but they can't if they're all delirious with hunger and thirst and exhaustion); the way she cuts people open with the Lines is noticed as similar to the Burakh method (because it is) and when Artemy finds out about the organ harvesting he assumes someone's impersonating him and tries to find them (ends in a confrontation); general angst.

Also had an idea for when she gets back, where after all her experiences on the other stage, she has trouble being comfortable around Artemy again (both because of how their confrontations went and because she broke Kin law), and in general now has that same faintly hollow-eyed, haunted look many bear from their time spent wearying out the plague.

I came up with this years ago and can pull apart the holes until it resembles a ratty old blanket, but this OC brought me joy and I thought I might as well share her for once. I may have named her, but I don't remember now

Who cares about the holes when you can easily see the love wooven into every stich? The warmth this blanket once provided to someone who adored it thoroughly, the memories it holds, the cold nights it chased away, soothingly drapped over your mind, a small relief.

That's what OCs are really about, aren't they? The joy they bring, the feelings the invoke, a cherished doll worn out with time and play.

You told her story just now with intimate familiarity, the story of someone who knew her personally, witness her every step, forged her path alongside her back when everything was new, uncertain and unkown. Now you walk down the same path with reassured confidence.

I love her story! I love the fact Daniil and Artemy end up together in it too. In a way, she is a symbol of love. As long as she exists in the universe, you know these two got their happy ending.

The way she describes seeing microscopic creatures move as magical is so endearing, claiming this device is the coolest thing ever, it's really the best of both worlds.

Not only does she have the childlike wonder for science and technology that Artemy lacks, but the faith and creativity necessary to believe in the extraordinary, to see the magic in the mundane and certian, which Daniil has trouble grasping.

I can't imagine what the lasting effects of meeting her parents back in time would do to her psyche. No wonder she feels conflicted around Artemy afterwards. Having just lost his father, struggling to repress his grief, only to be informed that someone out there somehow got hold of the Burakh menkhu knowledge and is attempting to replicate his surgical lines??? Yeah, he'd lose his shit and take it personally, a great disrespect on his Isidor's memory and an open insult to him.

Honestly, I'm glad it ends with her surviving that confrontation, I hope Daniil stepped in somehow bc Clara informed him ahead of time or something.

Names tell stories, I hope you find a fitting name for her, even just as a parting gift for this old hole-filled blanket, which once brought you so much joy and kept you warm. To grant a name is akin to granting a life, to humanise them.

If not, that's perfectly okay. I will call her the next Menkhu in line for now in my masterlist, or maybe Cub? Artemy's childhood nickname being passed down to his daughter seems appropriate, especially since it was Isidor who gave it to him.

She's very wonderful <33 I love her dearly.

muahahaha so you have in fact met at least one of them via my sideblog, @relevant-url-incoming, because you asked about Kit there, but I always welcome the chance to ramble/infodump/annoy the shit out of people who are following me for not-even-star-wars-adjacent things SO:

Ven is a name some people following me here will remember, specifically as a four year old Nautolan who adopts Dogma, the clone. She also, in the grand scheme of my silly little swtor nonsense, is a time traveller who grows up to fuck shit up in the distant past. As one does. He is... grumpy. and an asshole. and also overall much more likely to save an enemy than most of my ocs, but that always surprises people due to the grumpiness. I ship him very hard with Corso and Risha who I do not ship with each other, which makes for a delightful dynamic in my head. sometimes besties just have sex with the same man it's whatever.

Kitiver is my Jedi Knight whose anxiety made him fall big-time, and he is full of self-loathing and self-doubt. He's overall kind of neutral in how the game sets up morality but when I write him it's the inwardly directed anger and the way that splashes out onto others that keeps him dark, even though all he wants is to be a good person. He doesn't really believe he's capable of that, anymore. oops.

Kaojacol is my Consular who went from a kind of coldhearted closed off person to the biggest softie who just wants to be a good friend and wife and mom. She's... a good friend? to be fair to her the wife and mom thing kind of got out of control with the whole zakuul thing. Sorry Felix and also the kid I made up for them.

Exchei is my Sith Inquisitor and she's so nice, for someone who'll shock you with Force lightning if you piss her off. Her backstory is always kind of fresh in her mind, and she really really wants to reform the Empire and stop slavery. also if you give her something nice and expensive and don't betray her she'll love you forever, which is how Andronikos sold her on the whole romance thing when she still wasn't sure if she could trust him.

Ri'gastio is a fucking asshole and also my bounty hunter. He's just. He's the guy who does every mean thing and kills everyone he can kill and makes everyone pay for everything he does for them because he figures if the world screwed him over there's no point in him being nice. He might as well do the same. I want to smack him so badly.

Tavansa is my Sith Warrior, she is my pathetic wet cat lesbian who just wants Vette to love her in spite of her many murderous tendencies and the fact that she's kind of unbearable to be around. A real attack dog kind of person, if an attack dog was also always calculating how people might perceive her behaviour so she can make sure the people (Vette) she cares about see her in the best light possible.

Sarrant is my Agent and he's... very hard to explain honestly? Like he starts out super loyal and that gets burned to hell and back, and he falls for fucking Kaliyo of all people even though he likes to let people live and help them out and generally enjoys being nice, and he also will just cut a bitch for looking at him wrong - man has issues. He's made lighter choices than his sister Tavansa but he is equally fucked.

As for my favourite class and romance uhhhh... story-wise it probably is Jedi Knight because that shit is juicy, though i think in terms of juiciness Agent is also up there. But if we're talking straight-up soft spots I really like the trooper storyline. I like that I got to force Ven to solve the trolley problem like twenty times. That was great. She names her kid after Jaxo, that's how bad that hurt her.

I also really like romancing Jorgan, possibly also because of Ven, but especially for Timothy Omundson's little voice crack when you reunite with him. Like damn. how can i resist that. I haven't romanced Elara in-game yet but the version of her that lives in my head and is married to Ven and Jorgan is great. kind of terrified to find out if the actual romance lives up to that but I adore her so if it doesn't I shall simply rewrite it.

Alvvae has a small dog she rides around (fluffy samoyed jackal skin) because mounts in general are a little large for her and hard to control! Just her and her pup!

Quaille actually has to rent very very rarely, because its whole radiation deal *can* negatively impact others at touchable range. Makes its way around mostly on foot with the bare minimum of rented mounts as needed.

Ennreck runs a sand jackal ranch, and does keep one specially that's his and has been trained up to be extremely versatile. He can swap the runes on it as needed to change its shape for any mount needs! Basically he uses all the sand mount skins (griffon and skimmer and basic jackal) plus those that don't exist yet for other mounts.

im making an starfleet OC crew exploring the galaxy after events of DIS (im also only on TNG s5 so i dont know everything yet and may be uncultured sorry. i watched DIS first and have also seen LWD)

i have a vulcan butch lesbian/counterculture/punk woman. but i want him to be punk in a vulcan way so heres what ive thought:

asymmetrical/pointedly impractical haircut (eg. can get into your eyes or in your face?), messily cut fringe

wears green (green is the colour of vulcan blood), bright colours in general, absolutely no black/gray/brown/earth tones other than accents

Yeah.

Okay, so; in most franchises I don’t actually like making OCs (as protagonists/interacting with the protagonists) because usually they kinda Go Against The Grain of the original, uh, cast, BUT as a result I got pretty good at figuring out how to make OCs that blend in well enough that to be honest you can’t… really tell they’re OCs?

For Fallout, Bethesda games, and RPGs in general? This goes RIGHT out of the window because the games already MAKE you make an OC in the form of the player-character, so, free pass. You’ve basically got the opportunity to make whoever you want! But, thankfully, the ability to blend in an OC is useful if you wanna make OCs who are background characters who need to blend in with the other background characters, hence me going nuts and making Rott, Trench, Jac, Toothpick, Scar, Anya, Tic, Tac, Toe… you get the gist.

So my first advice is thinking about who this OC is, because if you’re looking for more errant fun in the form of a weird protagonist, you’ve got a lot of leeway. For the purposes of my answer, though, I’m gonna presume you want a more, uh, ‘lore-friendly’ OC.

A good OC should be grounded into the world; Fallout’s a pretty bonkers series, all told, so you can go a little nuts here and still have it work! But generally, a good grounding is by giving them a background that features places, people, family, names. Rott, for instance, was a dog breeder and lived with their cousin until a friend of a friend (of a friend) heard the Pack wanted a zookeeper, and ended up following their morally-meh instincts to take on a job! Even though I haven’t put down any concrete names/figures, this is a pretty believable townie.

“but murphy,” you say, “you didn’t even tell people this!” TRUE FACTS but I don’t have to! A good grounding in the world is mostly for you, because then you can have your character respond to events and conversations with knowledge or thoughts based on their background, which offers them a unique perspective. Rott’s reaction to something will wildly differ from, say, Trench, because Trench was born in a raider-adjacent lifestyle where Rott lived a townie life up until a year or two ago at best.

See, I think a good OC (and this goes for anything) is an OC that feels realistic in the world they reside in. Andy, for instance, feels like a legitimate addition because her origins aren’t unusual for the world—in fact, hers are pretty par for the course (like, just look at Nisha)! You can look at her and say ‘yup, that tracks’ because there isn’t anything about her that sticks out in such a way to feel like it doesn’t sit well with the canonical Fallout worldbuilding.

That said, of course, you can get weird; as mentioned, Fallout is a pretty wild world. Having someone with a weird origin (say, abducted by aliens) would work well enough if you managed to embed it well enough within the Fallout details, i.e. Mothership Zeta. The game sets a precedent for a lot of out-of-this-world ideas—you just need to make sure you let enough of the game seep into your personal ideas to essentially give it that Fallout flavour.

The way I enjoy writing OCs to help embed them into a world is to actually write them in third-person from another character’s perspective (see: The Work of Wolves). I find that when you choose to write about an OC from that OCs perspective, it’s easy to, um, tilt everything towards them, if that makes any sense? Like, they become the centre of the universe because they are the centre of the universe, in their eyes! As such, an OC can feel like they stick out against everything else because everything feels like it revolves around them simply by having the story be in their perspective. So, having a canonical character (or, shit, another OC who’s like a barkeep or something small) be the POV of a story helps to make that OC feel like one person inside a bigger cast! They aren’t the centre of the world now; that POV character also has other characters and people they need to talk to and interact with, and so your OC will feel as though they live inside the world more organically.

“but murphy,” you say again, “nisha won’t shut the fuck up about andy!”

Also true facts. The reason for this is that Nisha is observant and obsessive over people she deems as a threat—which is pretty much par for her character, and I can get away with it!

So, uh, that’s mostly my recommendations/my creation method. Basically, it’s all about the canonical content and the details therein—the more you can use canon to obscure the edges of an OC, they’ll feel less like an interloper and more like any canonical Fallout character! Think of it like trying to add an extra piece to a puzzle, making sure the edges all align; you can still go weird and wonderful, but you wanna make sure that they slot in against the other characters without taking up too much space! Try writing a short story in which you introduce them in the background of a scene, slowly building up their presence; this is a really good way to integrate them in such a way the reader won’t notice them until they’re a much bigger presence.

This kinda turned into a general how to make a background OC tutorial, but honestly I use the same tricks every time no matter the franchise or story, so, yeah! Hope that helps!
