"I don't understand. Why isn't he getting up?"
"Wh- you killed him!"
"Don't be silly, death isn't real."
"You cast Finger of Death!"
"I cast Lightning Bolt too; they name spells after fake shit all the time."
"Lightning is real too!!"
"Oh come on. Next you'll be telling me color is a thing."
"...have you ever actually been outside this cavern?"
"What's a cavern?"
"It's where we are right now!"
"Odd name for it, but yes, of course I have. Been this way, that way, through there is a lovely group of giant spiders..."
"We, ah. Might have killed those on our way here."
"Don't be silly, death isn't real."
"...right. Where do you think we came from?"
"Eh, somewhere. Weird shit shows up all the time."
"I-"
"Oh! Your friend there startled me and it totally slipped my mind; would you care for some tea? I don't drink it myself, but I keep some on hand for guests."
"...okay, listen. These are the Caverns of Chaos. Everything in here is self-replenishing. The prevailing theory was that they existed to protect a central chamber. We've spent weeks down here slogging through unimaginable horrors to make it there and you're going to, what, play dumb?"
"Okay now you're just being rude. I am not dumb! There might not be much to do around here, but I do my best to keep my mind sharp. I'd like to see you figure out as much as I have about the ever-shifting layout of the world!"
"We did! That's how we got here! Have you never tried scrying the outside?"
"Scrying spells are some sort of prank, best I can tell; they never seem to do anything except give me a headache."
"Cast one up."
"I don't really want to give myself a-"
"Just do it! At least 2000 meters."
"Alright, but I don't see...what..."
"..."
"...colors?"
"Yeah, the whole dungeon is monochrome for some reason, we think-"
"Lightning?"
"Well, if there's a storm, I suppose-"
"Death?"
"...death?"
"There's...more like your friend."
"What do you mean-"
"Why aren't they moving?"
"I don't-"
"I'm moving. I can move. See? They look like me. Why aren't they moving?"
"They're- there are skeletons? We just came from-"
"Am I going to stop moving?"
"No, you-"
"Why isn't your friend moving?"
"..."
"...he's...'dead'. Isn't he. I 'killed' him."
"...listen, just calm down, we can-"
"Oh, yes, of course! I could never figure out what these spells for making 'un-dead' were for, but they must be for fixing this! I'll just-"
"NO!"
"But he's-"
"We're handling it!"
"No you're not! Whatever you're doing, it's not working."
"How can you-"
"You're trying to draw power from something that's not there. I've done it a few times, don't feel bad, it's a common mistake."
"I'm drawing power from my goddess! There's no way she's..."
"What is a goddess? Is it that little symbol you're carrying around? It doesn't seem to have any power in it."
"...it...why can't I feel her?"
"Just let me do it, I can-"
"We're not letting you turn Steve into some kind of undead abomination!"
"Wh- but he wasn't dead before!"
"He was alive, you stupid thing!"
"Right, not dead. Un-dead. I'll just make him un-dead again and then we can..."
"Why has she forsaken me?"
"We can..."
"Why won't she answer??"
"Color...lightning...death..."
audible weeping
"They're like me...why aren't they moving?"
"It's probably just the Caves messing with the divine connection, we should-"
"Should I not be moving?"
extended wailing
"Is un-dead not like 'alive'?"
"Listen, I know we didn't have this problem before, but-"
"Is there something wrong with being un-dead?"
"OF COURSE THERE IS, YOU STUPID UNDEAD THING! STEVE IS DEAD, THE GODDESS WON'T LISTEN TO ME, AND YOU'RE JUST...just..."
"...just what?"
"..."
"What am I?"
"..."
"WHAT AM I???"
the cavern shakes
"Listen, just calm down, we'll-"
"Why is he dead? Why are they all dead?"
"All wh-"
"The ones you made me scry on!"
"Oh my god, we forgot about-"
"Why aren't they moving??"
"We don't know! What else did you see?"
"Colors, lightning, death..."
"What else??"
"Colors, lightning, death..."
the lich collapses into a fetal position, rocking back and forth
"Listen, this is important, you need to-"
someone attempts to shake the lich. A sudden pulse of darkness slams them into the opposite wall.
"Colors, lightning, death..."
"Just calm down, we can-"
"GODDESS? WHERE ARE YOU??"
"Colors, lightning, death..."
the party leader buries her face in her hands. The healer weeps and wails. The lich, seemingly catatonic, continues mumbling to himself. This goes on for a while.
"..."
"Right. Okay. That's enough of this. We're taking Steve's body and leaving. We wouldn't have a chance against a lich in this state anyway. Keep trying to revive him as we go, we'll-"
"...lich?"
"Yes, yes, you don't know anything about anything, it's very funny, har har, we're done here. Go back to giving yourself headaches or whatever it is you do all day."
"I'm coming with you."
"...what?"
"You know what I am. You know about places that aren't 'caverns'. You know about colors, lightning, and death. I need to come with you."
"No offence, buddy, but you don't exactly seem like adventuring material."
"Please! Don't you need to find out why all those people are...'dead'? I can speak with dead, I guess, if it's a real thing."
"..."
"We are not taking this THING that killed Steve with us!"
"...we probably are going to need help with whatever is going on up there."
"He might be lying!"
the party leader gestures at the utterly guileless lich. The healer turns away.
"...fine."
"Thank you."
"Just...keep him away from me."
The party improvises a stretcher as the lich gathers up his meager possessions. A thick silence reigns as the group shuffles out the only exit, the lich awkwardly following at a distance.
"Wait, I forgot my maps-"
"We'll be fine. Just stay back there, okay? You've caused enough trouble for one day."
Nodding hesitantly, the lich steps over the threshold, leaving his cavern for the last time.
It turns out that the lich the adventurers had been hired to slay had never actually killed anyone before until the impulsive paladin of the group swung first. Now, as the healer tries to revive them, the rest have to calm the ancient undead mage down from what is undeniably a panic attack.

There's a boy, Eddie meets a boy, and it's mundane because they're boys and it's summer and they find each other like lonely boys in summer do. It shouldn't be the defining experience of Eddie's life, that summer, that boy. His memories are all sun drenched, tanned skin, minnow catching, swimming, camping under the stars, a fumbling, toasted-marshmallow-sticky first kiss. He grows up and still Eddie thinks there will never be anyone else like that boy.
---
There's this new teen soap schlock on the CW. It fills his social media algorithms with gossip and BTS footage and spoilers. He ignores every bit of it, so far from the target audience it's laughable.
Jeff, Gareth, and Freak get into it. At first, he takes this as a betrayal of the highest order, threatens to kill all their characters in their next dnd session, but they convince him to give it a shot.
It's airs Thursday nights and thank god Wayne is at work, he'd never live it down. He turns the TV on just in time for the cold open, and within ten seconds there's a beautiful man on screen. Chestnut hair, coiffed carefully back; down-turned, hazel puppy dog eyes; freckles and moles dotting his face and neck--Eddie would recognize them anywhere, spent hours mapping the constellations of them during their one magical summer.
He sinks to his knees in front of the TV--nose inches from the screen--watches the whole episode that way. For the entire hour, the only thing he sees is Steve Harrington.
Eddie doesn't move until after the credits have rolled. He can't believe that the boy he knew all those years ago is an actor on a popular show, that he'd just missed finding him, all this time.
Before he can talk himself out of it, he Googles, which is a mistake immediately, because the most popular pictures are from a GQ photoshoot where Steve is very wet and very shirtless, the amount of chest hair on display enough to kill a man. He forgets how to breathe for several seconds, before quickly scrolling away, which is also a mistake because it's how he learns that Steve 1) dated his castmate, Nancy Wheeler for several years before 2) she got caught cheating on him with another castmate, and 3) he's often seen out and about with his current on-screen girlfriend, Robin Buckley.
For his own sanity, he has to put his phone away. It isn't like he's going to see Steve ever again, obviously, so he needs to forget all this. Keep the memory of that summer safe.
---
It's late spring and Gareth invites them all to their favorite bar in Indianapolis. One of their friends from their Corroded Coffin days got a gig playing bass for some up and coming indie guy, tickets and drinks are comped. It's not their usual vibe, musically, but who is Eddie to say no to a free night out?
And, look, night of, the music isn't his vibe, but the place is packed and he's with his best friends, and the drinks are flowing, so even he finds himself swaying along to the whiney hipster shit coming from the stage.
Eventually, the lights go down for the headliner, and the crowd crushes forward in a way Eddie isn't used to in this bar. He lets himself be pushed forward, somehow ending up right in front of the stage.
When the lights go up, he stops breathing.
It's Steve.
Steve right there in front of him, guitar strapped across his midsection. He's wearing dorky little Ray-Ban sunglasses, but Eddie would know that hair, those moles, anywhere.
There's no way Steve will notice him, remember him, but it's enough to see him now, to hear his music. Eddie dances and smiles at the boy who got away. Maybe he'll mourn later for the distant hope he harbored deep within his heart. But, he thinks, this is enough.
Steve comes out for the encore, takes off the sunglasses, tosses them straight to Eddie, smiles big and genuine and familiar. His heart stops. It can't be real, it can't mean anything, but he's so elated that his soul might rise from his body.
The show ends, the buzz of it, of Steve, reverberating through Eddie as he makes his way back to the bar. It's crowded with people, but he slides through the bodies until he's at the front. Someone taps him on the back, and he thinks they're trying to get through, but when he turns it's Steve.
His smile is so beautiful, Eddie thinks that maybe he's dying.
"Eddie!" Steve says.
"Stevie!" He doesn't mean for the old nickname to come out, couldn't keep it in.
"You remember me!" Steve is beaming.
"I'd never forget you." He's smiling just as hard. "Can I buy you a drink?"
Steve's nose wrinkles. "I've got, like, fifty coming. We could go somewhere quiet to talk?"
He's never said yes to something so fast in his life.
They go back to the postage stamp sized green room, and he's surprised to see Robin Buckley there. His stomach shrivels for a second, but she stands and he sees the lesbian flag painted on the side of her Converse, the oversized vest she's wearing.
"You want me to skedaddle?" She asks. He loves her immediately.
"Do you mind?" Steve asks. Robin shakes her head.
"Nice to meet you, Eddie," she calls as she sails out the door.
"You told her about me?" He knows his smile is downright goofy.
Steve blushes. "Um, yeah. Maybe a little? Just that I met a boy from near here one summer. And, uh, maybe something about him being my first kiss?"
"Oh." Eddie thinks he might burst into flame. "I wasn't sure if--I didn't know if you'd remember."
"I'd never forget," Steve says.
"You got famous." Eddie says, which is dumb, but he doesn't know how to deal with Steve cherishing those childhood memories the same way he does.
"I guess I did." Steve looks down, hair tumbling around his face. "It's probably not what you were expecting."
"Did I expect to turn on the tv and see my first crush staring at me in HD? Not quite. But It was amazing. You're amazing."
"I'm on a CW show," Steve laughs.
"So?"
"I think maybe you're a little biased about your first crush."
"Are you saying that's a bad thing?" They're flirting, he thinks. Can't believe it's happening, that Steve might--
"Well, maybe, but only if you tell me you don't have a crush on me anymore."
"Are you kidding? I saw that GQ photoshoot."
Steve's laugh is loud and bright, like fireworks in Eddie's chest. They're closer now, sharing warmth, breath.
"I have some candids if you want to see."
"Don't tempt me with a good time, Stevie."
They're quiet for a second, Eddie a little breathless from how hard they're flirting, how right it feels.
"You were great out there," he says.
"Thanks." Steve smiles, bashful. "I know it's not your kind of music."
Eddie shrugs. "I like what you do."
"And to think, you've barely gotten a taste yet." Steve pauses for a beat, horror dawning on his face. "Oh, shit. That was--I'm sorry--I--Robin says I always come on too strong, and I promised I would play it cool, but--"
"You never have to play it cool with me," Eddie says, sincere through his laughter.
"This is fast, though, right? I mean. The second I saw you in the crowd, it--it confirmed everything I thought when we first met. That's--is that crazy?"
Eddie's smile is softer now. "Not at all." Gently, he cups Steve's cheek with his hand. "Can I kiss you?"
"Please," Steve breathes. "God, Eddie, please."
Their mouths meet and it starts out sweet and slow, but it's not childhood crushes anymore. Eddie's tongue teases at the seam of Steve's lips, which part for him like he's the only one in the world with the magic words.
It's sweeter than any marshmallow.

Mezato is a very intriguing person despite her position as a side character restricting the audience's knowledge on her, but there are some implications I have become very interested on.
During her conversation with Ritsu post-LOL Cult arc, she mentions something akin to "people really aren't born as equals", referring to how Mob is so disadvantaged compared to Ritsu even thought they're siblings. However, that also says a lot about her motivations. Mezato has two main reasons for organizing the Psycho Helmet Cult and trying to make it influent (with Mob's help as their messiah): 1) it sounded fun; and 2) she wanted to take part in such a massive event. Although the "fun" part can be attributed to the fact that well, she is a fourteen year old with a weird perspective, both motivations are directly associated to not only Mezato's passion, but her opinion on herself.
First of all, she becomes fixated on anything that appears worthy of her attention. It kickstarts her adventures as the school journalist, hunting for any kind of news that she believes to be interesting, and by that she doesn't mean "math class is cancelled": Mezato goes far beyond, from catching shoplifters red-handed to infiltrating a cult that supposedly brainwashes its members. It's clear that the mundane is not enough to her. Mezato wants the current biggest thing. This is one of the reasons she gets so interested in Mob, and being so obsessed with the worldchanging, Mezato cannot bring herself to care as much about the common, the mundane. This way, she can only see entertainment, or better put, value, in what stands out.
Equally, Mezato wants to participate in something she sees as 'big'. Being someone who is so attracted to the flashiest parts of reality, she wants to have an active, direct role regarding them. It makes her feel entertained. It makes her feel fulfilled. It makes her feel special, most of all, because even being in the Biggest Thing's shadow removes her from the condition of banality she disdains so much. That's what makes the Psycho Helmet Cult sound like such an excelent idea, as hollow and uncritical it could be.
But what does these beliefs say about Mezato? Simple. Mezato doesn't think she can be interesting or valuable by herself. She is not shown as pretty, or academically gifted, or athletic. She doesn't appear to have friends. She doesn't even have an ability with the occult like Mob does. Mezato is a normal, lonely girl who has no other excuse to be noticed besides her imprudent detective work, but worse than that, she thinks she can't change. Mezato will never be attention-worthy as herself, so she appeals to inserting herself in whatever interesting thing she finds in the hope that it'll make her Someone by association. She could be a loser, a nobody, but at least she helped build something that is wonderful, and that is the closest she can get to being important.
Her interests and achievements, in this sense, are more like an extension of herself than a result of her passion. A passion that isn't understood by anyone else. A passion that others ignore and are annoyed at, which only reinforces her loneliness and her obsession with chasing after Big Things. If she succeeds, she will finally have a part of herself she can be proud of. After all, there are a hundred wonders in the world with the potential to change everything; there is only one Ichi Mezato and she can never be like them.

I just made a HUGE discovery for a possible song featured in Stranger Things 5 for BYLER, PLEASE hear me out 😭
This song, is called "Bizarre Love Triangle" and guess when it was released...
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/42c91a8280be116fa1c9bce0919c91b0/f1e5f5e2f7a10d3a-dd/s540x810/bc0c3775bac25f86f823388250caca38a7032951.jpg)
In November 1986 (the year and possible month the season is settled). I'M CRYING.
This song, talks about a Love Triangle. It is gender neutral, so we can totally interpret it the way we want, so here's mine:
The love triangle is obviously Mike - Will - Eleven. Now why bizarre? Because it is not two boys in love with the same girl, but one boy and one girl in love with the same boy, and that boy not sure if he likes the girl or the boy...
Let's see the lyrics shall we?
FIRST VERSE:
Every time I think of you
I feel shot right through with a bolt of blue
It's no problem of mine, but it's a problem I find
Livin' a life that I can't leave behind
There's no sense in telling me
The wisdom of the fool won't set you free
But that's the way that it goes and it's what nobody knows
Well, every day my confusion grows
———
Now, let's analyse these lyrics with Will's pov...
Every time I think of you = Mike
I feel shot right through with a bolt of blue = the color of Mike. Every single time he thinks about Mike, it feels like being shot, maybe in the heart.
It's no problem of mine, but it's a problem I find = meaning that for him, it isn't a problem of liking Mike, but it's a problem overall for society or for everyone else (their friends, families...)
Livin' a life that I can't leave behind = he can't forget Mike so he lives the life he's currently living because he can't leave it behind, leave Mike behind. He's too attached to him, to leave him.
There's no sense in telling me
The wisdom of the fool won't set you free = Will is known as the wise one of the group, and also the fool (= doesn't like girls, is childish, is gay). Meaning that his own wisdom won't set Mike free (probably of the fake person he's being, the fake relationship he has with El).
But that's the way that it goes and it's what nobody knows = It's the way things are, Will likes him but Mike is trying to act straight and nobody knows that, nobody knows they're struggling.
Well, every day my confusion grows = this sentence can feel like a response to what Will has "said" before. He says all those things, and Mike answers this. His confusion of liking Will grows every day. He feels confused if he actually likes El or not and if not, if he likes Will.
———
So with this first verse, things are set that Will loves Mike but he's too detached from that, too confused about who he loves and what he should do. Now, let's see the chorus:
CHORUS
Every time I see you falling
I get down on my knees and pray
I'm waiting for that final moment
You say the words that I can't say
———
It seems like the chorus can be perceived as Mike's pov. Let's see how the analysis works out here:
Every time I see you falling = every time Will is on the bottom, like with his feelings, when he feels at the bottom (= sad).
I get down on my knees and pray = can be a reference to the fact that Mike's family are conservatives, and religious. Although we've never seen them pray or anything, they're the cliché of the suburban family with a big house, and this cliché involves being Christian.
I'm waiting for that final moment = the ending of the show?
You say the words that I can't say = the most obvious of them all: we know Mike is unable to say I love you to El, so he's waiting that final moment where Will is going to say I love you to him, because it seems like he's incapable to do it himself. Which means that Mike won't be the one to say I love you first.
———
So this chorus was centered on Mike's feelings and current situation. Now, the second verse.
SECOND VERSE:
I feel fine and I feel good
I'm feeling like I never should
Whenever I get this way, I just don't know what to say
Why can't we be ourselves like we were yesterday?
I'm not sure what this could mean
I don't think you're what you seem
I do admit to myself that if I hurt someone else
Then I'll never see just what we're meant to be
———
This is so Byler coded, and it is again, Mike's pov. So here's my analysis:
I feel fine and I feel good
I'm feeling like I never should = not okay to be feeling that way, this good.
Whenever I get this way, I just don't know what to say = this can have 2 meanings. Either it is about how he's feeling good when he's next to Will and he doesn't even know what to talk about or say because he's flustered. Or, he says he's feeling "good" and he shouldn't be when he's with Eleven, and whenever he gets this way, with El, he doesn't know what to say because he doesn't like her that way.
Why can't we be ourselves like we were yesterday? = About Will: why can't they be friends like before, like what changed? About El: why can't they be strangers/friends like before, why did they have to be together that way? Why did he push himself to in the first place.
I'm not sure what this could mean = About Will: the feelings he has, he's not sure what they are about (= his love feelings towards Will). About El: he's not sure of why he's feeling uncomfortable when he's with her (= platonic feelings towards El).
I don't think you're what you seem = I'm not sure if this could be said by Will or El. It can be, again like some sort of answer, response to what's previously said. So I think it could be El or Will saying to "you" (= Mike) that he's not acting like his usual self, he's different, faking to be perceived as normal (= regarding El, acting straight).
I do admit to myself that if I hurt someone else = back to Mike. Again this can have 2 meanings. For El: admitting that if he hurts her, by using her as a beard. For Will: hurting him by ignoring his feelings, letting him on the side and only concentrating on Eleven, hurting his feelings (platonic like romantic).
Then I'll never see just what we're meant to be = for El: what they're meant to be, so friends. Meaning if he hurts her by not admitting that he doesn't like her, he'll never see her and him as friends. For Will: what they're meant to be is boyfriends. Meaning if he hurts him by not admitting his feelings and ignoring him, he'll never see each other as lovers.
———
We can clearly see how this verse applies to Mike, as how he's confused and trapped between dating a girl he doesn't like and wanting a boy he likes. But it is the 80s, he's scared of what others would think, especially himself. Because of this internalized homophobia he has.
The rest of the song is the chorus repeated four times.
Overall, this song is exactly what Mike feels about Will and about Eleven, about this Bizarre Love Triangle.
If you have other interpretation for that song, please feel free to give it. This was mine, and you may not be agreeing with it entirely, so if you have a different opinion, I'd be glad to read it.

Can I ask your analysis on 'who says you're cute' episode?
On the scene where Ranma and Akane walk after visiting Dr. Tofu's clinic (Akane's crying scene is so heartbreaking).
I think that Ranma said 'that hairstyle looks good on you' is out of guilt. When he hears that Dr. Tofu's words don't affect her as she accepts the fact that the man has a huge crush on her sister, this makes him act to say something sorry in a roundabout way.
(I know he apologizes before they visit Dr. Tofu's office, but still, he feels guilty)
But I think it's shifted into something when Akane said and smiled so beautifully (I love love love love love that scene!) 'thank you, that makes me happy'.
That made him realize that Akane is so cute. (I think Ranma (before the cutting hair scene) thought Akane was cute, but this moment really changed the way his thought of her.)
The word, cute, has much deeper meaning now after that scene (to him). This is the reason why Ranma has trouble saying how cute she is (the armor arc really makes the boi fumble so bad when saying how cute she is, and good lord, the Romeo and Juliet scene).
But when Ranma says Ukyo 'you've become so cute' scene, I notice how lackluster it is. I think that Ranma says to Akane 'you're cute when you smile' and the Ukyo cute is the same.
Ranma didn't fumble when he said cute to Akane because he didn't realize his little crush on his cute little tomboy. Ranma saying that to Ukyo is like seeing a long time friend and seeing the changes on her (finally knowing that his friend is a she).
So yeah.... Thoughts???
This is the chapter before "you're cute when you smile" ... he knows damn well he likes her, he's just trying to protect himself by denying her cuteness because he thinks he has no chance with her. He falls for her first, but falling in love is also a process...
Ranma tells you is not guilt, or him feeling sorry or trying to cheer up Akane. He even gets pissed when Akane says it.
this is Ranma feeling guilty:
Nothing Ranma ever says or does to or with Akane is comparable to what he does with other girls. If anything, comparing should be to highlight how different it is...
This is a rejection. This can be associated with guilt as Ukyo often is...(even noticing she's a girl, given the ass whooping he just gave her and everything he just learned. It can be taken as an overcorrection)
The following scene is romantic. Look at how different the framing is – you're not meant to ever compare this to say it's the same as when he says it to other girls! Look at the lighting, how big the panels are, how it takes a full page, highlighting its importance... It doesn't matter that Ranma, who's in the process of falling for Akane, who already knows he likes her but hasn't figured out how much yet, is smooth about saying it. He knows he's telling the girl he likes that she's cute. He's telling her "I'm here, notice me" while being a bit of a jester about it ("gotcha" ... it's a bit of a game, you see, and directly connects this scene to the scene you mention)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/15c323f0485037aa6eeebc0df1884d44/a7d5a06683bf3b49-ab/s540x810/bacf13a92b6ab82ee049ecfd7e8411aa9f54a956.jpg)
he doesn't struggle with telling her she's cute when he's a jester (that he's teasing her like this shows comfort with her that he has with nobody else too)
Also, he does get in his way in the "you're cute when you smile" chapter. He's his own worst enemy, and he "ruins it" here
I agree with this:
"The word, cute, has much deeper meaning now after that scene (to him). This is the reason why Ranma has trouble saying how cute she is"
but this is why
A common thing when Ranma is watching over Akane's unrequited love is jealousy. He notices her being all cutesy in front of the doc and is bothered, and the next time they're over there he keeps pulling on her pigtails to get her attention when she starts acting like that again. "Pay attention to me, not him"
He tries to put Akane's feelings first in some parts, like here (he can't even look at her, he doesn't like this, but he's already showing you Akane's happiness is important to him)
But when Akane says "I'm over him" this is framed as something hopeful through paneling and lighting, and Ranma does what has been doing for a while "I'm here, pay attention to me... notice me" he jumps so he's in front of her so she literally "notices him" ... "look at me"

I think connecting this to guilt is the worst possible thing you can do (which is why Ranma gets pissed) when you think about the story behind Akane's hair. When Akane doesn't accept what he offers out of guilt is fine (like carrying her) but this isn't because he's offering his feeling here. He tends to call her uncute when he doesn't like something she's doing or feels rejected in some way (or when he's trying to downplay his feelings)
When Ranma says he prefers her shorter hair, he is stating his preference. He has to get away from her and gets to a high place like a little cat, trying to get comfortable but incredibly shy anyway, this is very difficult for him... we see several instances of Ranma dealing with guilt (Ukyo, for example, is constantly connected with guilt) and it doesn't look like this.
And this is huge, because the long hair is linked to her molding herself after someone else to get love, and the short hair is her true self. So this is Ranma saying "I like your true self better" ... so Akane smiles at him with genuine happiness (accepting his feelings, even if part of her still wonders if it's guilt). She's smiling as her true self so Ranma, who already liked her, falls even harder for her... part of why things change for him is that from that moment on, the reasons to be in denial are no longer "I have no chance with her" ... if calling her uncute is sometimes linked with Ranma feels rejected, acknowledging her cuteness in his head is the opposite. Ranma likes her smile because he likes it when she's happy (because he likes her!) but this is also the start of her smiles being connected to bonding and affection (more consciously).
Here's something else:
Ranma knows Akane's roughness, and he likes it. He provokes her to get that side of her: he can deal with roughness and genuinely enjoys fighting with her. It's what he's used to (blame genma)
But he struggles to see Akane's sweetness (even though it's the first thing she shows him with "you wanna be friends?") He struggles with it because it's too disarming.
so this is Ranma being unable to deny her sweetness, and falling even harder... things start becoming difficult then not because he has no chance, but because his feelings become too big, too much
i might be forgetting something here, it's the second time i'm typing this because tumblr ate my first response lol i'm not even gonna proofread, a bitch is tired

for the 16th rivalry between yandere lmk wukong and macaque?? please
Hm... I can try some rivalry HCs, sure!
Yandere! Sun Wukong vs Macaque
Pairing: Romantic - Rivalry
Possible Trigger Warnings: Gender-Neutral Darling, Obsession, Possessive behavior, Overprotective behavior, Stalking, Violence, Attempted kidnapping mentioned, Isolation, Jealousy, Dubious relationship.
I think this is a cool idea considering how their dynamic and characters are portrayed in canon.
After all, Sun Wukong and Macaque are meant to be opposites of one another.
They were once sworn brothers and friends, then after Macaque was left behind they were enemies.
Later on they become 'friends' again... but imagine if they both got attached to the same person while being enemies?
Maybe you meet Sun Wukong first, a known hero who gets all the fame.
You may even be close to the monkey king similar to MK, making you both friends.
In this case, Macaque's obsession over you would be to get back at Wukong.
He doesn't want to see the other monkey happy after just abandoning him.
Then while he's originally hunting you down out of spite... Turns out he can see why Wukong enjoys your company.
Alternatively, If Macaque gets obsessed first, he may also use it against Wukong.
Macaque is naturally manipulative, it would not surprise me if he used you to taunt Wukong.
After all, Wukong is beloved by many, but Macaque bets he isn't adored by a special someone.
This ends up making Wukong curious about you.
At the time Macaque wasn't dating you and was lying to mess with Wukong, which made the monkey king look into you.
Unfortunately now both monkeys begin to fight for your affection because Macaque can tell Wukong is going to take you from him... like he's taken everything else.
Another thing I'd like to note about this concept is the fact they seem rather evenly matched.
Macaque is quite literally meant to be Wukong's shadow, they have nearly the same abilities.
Clones, shapeshifting, although they have different fighting styles, they're very similar to one another with the exception of a few skills.
Their motives would also differ between one another.
Wukong tends to lean protective most of the time, while Macaque tends to lean possessive.
However, that does not mean they both aren't capable of these traits... That's just where they tend to lean towards.
I was going to say their rivalry would be petty, but that's only if they were on good terms.
Since Macaque is scared of abandonment, he'd probably aim to get rid of Wukong permanently if he felt you were going to be taken from him.
Meanwhile, Wukong doesn't trust Macaque to not do anything cruel with you.
They're both scared to lose you to the other, but again, different motives.
Wukong thinks you're going to get hurt, Macaque doesn't want to be hurt again...
Which makes both monkeys decide they should try to keep you away from the other.
I do think their rivalry would get violent but they'd never get to the point of killing one another as one of them will always retreat.
Macaque is always following you around like a shadow, hoping he'll get your attention with his sweet words.
Wukong warns you about him, but he's no better honestly.
Macaque stalks you through the shadows, Wukong 'watches over you' as different animals.
See? There's little difference between them but motive and method.
The two still stalk you, the two still fight for you, they're pretty much the same.
Just because Wukong isn't sly and overly charismatic as Macaque doesn't mean he isn't manipulating you in some way.
Both of them want to isolate you, both of them want you to themselves...
Seriously, is there much of a difference between 'protecting you' and 'isolating you' when it comes to them?
No, No there isn't.
Not only that but their fights are nearly catastrophic.
They're both ridiculously strong and determined to get their way.
It may even be a bit upsetting because Macaque just wants to find someone to give him attention?
He definitely takes this rivalry personally since Macaque thinks Wukong has everything.
When in reality, Wukong is probably in a similar boat.
They both just want attention and love from one specific person.
Which, unfortunately, happens to be you.
I can see them both being clingy and brutal in their obsession.
They both like to be playful and clingy with you, completely unwilling to share you.
They both have their sights on you as their partner, probably even for life if they can get you immortal.
Just imagine how their fights would go...
It would not be surprising if they came out of it bleeding, still growling at one another like feral animals until you step in to break things up.
While they may not kill one another, they often drag you around due to their rivalry.
For example, there were probably many times Macaque tried to drag you off into one of his shadow portals... Only for Wukong to step in.
Or maybe Wukong's trying to keep you on Flower Fruit Mountain to hide you from Macaque... Only for the shadow monkey to know exactly where you went.
I feel the only way to stop this rivalry, or at least make them stop being so brutal, would be after the Azure Lion arc.
By that point they're on better terms with one another, not quite friends but not entirely enemies...
Yet they both can't seem to accept the fact they both love you.
They'd tone down the fighting by this point but you'd still need to step in to soothe them.
For now they can accept the fact you love them both... yet they always want more.
They're greedy.
So even if you can calm them, they're still possessive.
They both want you as their own, to claim you and mark you as their chosen partner.
But, neither of them can get that far as the other one will stop them.
While they will accept the fact they both protect you, they both want you safe, and overall have the same goal to keep you happy...
They aren't happy until one of them wins.
They may not kill one another, but their fights seem to get close.
You worry for them, you really do.
Yet there's nothing you can do but let what's going on play out.
Even if you made a choice on which one you want as a partner, if you're even interested... The other would never accept that choice.
What might be worse is you probably don't even reciprocate.
You don't love them like they love you, you see them as friends.
Even if one of them won, you wouldn't be happy.
Either option still makes you isolated and hidden away from anyone else.
It's funny how similar they are... in a morbid way.
It just depends on what you prefer.
A manipulative monkey who wants to treat you like a toy he can't share...
Or would you rather have a monkey who thinks hiding you away will keep you safe and happy on a mountain?
Honestly, in the end, who wins doesn't matter for you... If there's even a winner.
You'll just be given the same outcome even if there's one who wins...
Maybe it's a good thing if neither of them have you and they continue to fight....

Whatever it is you’ve been doing
Written for the @steddiebingo
Prompts: Secret Date on the Kissing Booth bonus card and Date on the regular one
Rated: T
Tags: Omegaverse; Alpha!Steve; Omega!Eddie; Secret relationship, Courting rituals, Fluff
Notes: Set in the same verse as Whatever you want it to be.
Dustin Henderson is confused, and Eddie can tell that he's going to make it everybody's problem.
He glowers at Eddie from under his hat as Steve herds his friends and him into the living room of Harrington Manor, frowns as they unpack their dice and gives snippy replies as Steve takes everyone's pizza order. He calms down a little after that, as they get started with their campaign, but by the time Steve returns with the food, his mood sours again.
“Extra cheese and no pineapple for Wheeler,” Steve says, handing over Mike's order, then plops down on the couch, right next to where Eddie is sitting cross-legged on the carpet. “And these are for you.”
Eddie blinks at the box that's shoved in his direction. Steve wiggles it, smile bright and eager.
“Pizza knots with pepperoni,” he singsongs. Like he thinks it's charming. Like offering a guy greasy fast food in a soggy cardboard box and making bad sex puns is high-level seduction.
The problem is it's working.
“Keep your knots to yourself, Harrington,” he drawls, just for the heck of it, because the last thing that dork needs is to think he’s some sort of modern-day Don Juan. “I didn't order anything.”
Steve rolls his eyes but doesn't stop smiling.
“I know,” he says, opening the box and grinning at the audible rumble of Eddie’s stomach. “But I also know they're your favorite. C'mon, they're on me. We can even share if-”
“What the hell is going on with you two?” Dustin blurts, slamming his hands down on the sofa table and sending their figurines scattering.
Steve measures him with an unimpressed look and takes a bite out of his first pizza knot.
“What d’you mean?”
Dustin groans. Tugs on his basecap. Throws his hands out in a dramatic, all-encompassing gesture. Next to him, Lucas dodges to the side, narrowly avoiding an elbow to the face.
“What do I- … This! All of this! Why are we holding Hellfire at your house? Why are you buying Eddie food? Why are you two suddenly joined at the hip when you were barely even acknowledging each other’s existence two weeks ago?”
Eddie trades a glance with Steve before he turns back to Dustin with blank stare. It’s hard, because the kid’s left eyebrow is twitching funnily and he needs to muster up all of his willpower to not burst out laughing.
“Okay? I don’t get it, Henderson.”
“Yeah,” Steve agrees around half a mouthful of cheese. “You’ve been nagging me about what a great guy Eddie is for literal months, and now that we’re finally getting along, that’s also a problem?”
“I wanted you to be friends!” Dustin whines. “Not- … Not whatever it is you’ve been doing! Hell, the other day at the gas station, you bought him a pen!”
“Because he always steals mine and I thought he might like it,” Steve shrugs. “It was shaped like a dragon and had those little sparkly stones for eyes.”
Eddie smiles at him. “It’s a very metal pen, thank you.”
“See?” Dustin blurts. “That’s exactly what I mean! Hell, if I didn’t know any better, I’d say you two were courting!”
Next to him, Mike rolls his eyes. “Oh, please, they can’t be courting. Eddie’s a beta.”
Dustin gives him an scathing look. “He dated your sister and she’s an alpha.”
“That was before she presented,” Mike retaliates. “They broke up after that.”
“Hey, shitheads,” Steve says, pointing his pizza knot at them. “I didn’t break up with Nancy because she presented as an alpha. And you don’t gossip about other people’s love life. Least of all while they’re in the same room.”
Dustin looks like he’s about to argue, but Steve draws himself up to his full height and crosses his arms. The warning rumble that bubbles from his throat is so low it’s barely even there, but it still has the desired effect. The kids deflate and avert their eyes. Which is just as well, because if they kept looking, they’d probably see how Eddie has gone suspiciously red in the face and has started squirming in his spot.
“Jeez, okay,” Dustin mumbles. “Sorry, I guess.”
“It’s okay,” Steve says. “Now go back to your nerd game, I’d like you to go home at some point.”
*
Mrs. Henderson swings by on her way back from work to pick up the brood, so Steve takes the empty glasses and pizza cartons to the kitchen while Eddie clears away the mess in the living room. He’s just assembled his notes on the campaign into something that halfway resembles a neat stack when a pair of arms wraps around his waist and pulls him back into a soft, warm body. Steve noses at the scent gland on his neck, even though there’s not much to smell now that Eddie is back on his repressants. Eddie still sighs and tilts his head to give him better access.
“Those little gremlins are too curious for their own good,” Steve mutters. Since his mouth is all but welded to Eddie’s neck, his voice comes out slightly muffled. It sends a pleasant shiver down Eddie’s spine and makes a familiar warmth stir in his belly.
“Tell me about it,” Eddie says, hands finding Steve’s and entangling their fingers. In the kitchen, some cheesy love song is blaring from the radio. Steve starts swaying the both of them to the melody and Eddie lets him. “You might wanna try and keep the sexy, macho, alpha act to a minimum though, if you don’t want me to pop a boner in front of our little sheepies. That, and the courting gifts.”
“I’ve been so subtle about it,” Steve grouses, spinning him around and out before wrapping him back into his arms. “Goddamn pizza knots and pens. You deserve much better gifts. You deserve to be taken on proper dates.”
“Hey now!” Eddie hits his chest. “Don’t insult the pen. I meant what I said, I like it a lot.”
Steve pouts, but his scent goes earthier and more intense, as always when he’s pleased.
“Maybe we should just tell them,” Eddie mumbles into Steve's chest as they keep moving to the music. “They're two steps away from figuring it out, anyhow.”
Steve gently pushes him away, so that he can measure him with a quizzical look. The pine needle note in his scent has gone sharper. More protective. Eddie realizes he's getting better and better at telling his emotions from these subtle shifts, even with his senses dulled by the meds.
“Would you be okay with that? You said you didn't want anyone to know.”
Eddie shrugs. “They're a bunch of loud-mouthed little goblins, but they're good kids at heart. I feel like they'd handle it okay. And I'll probably need to come out about it at some point, if we want to continue this.”
Steve frowns, unconvinced, folding him up in his arms and pressing a soft, lingering kiss to his forehead.
“When you're ready. When you're absolutely sure you wanna do this. Not a day earlier, okay?”
A part of Eddie thinks he'll never be ready, but he knows that it's the scared and cowardly part that also thought he'd never open up to Steve. Another, more stubborn and possessive part of him wants to climb out on the roof and proclaim their courtship for all of this goddamn town to hear. Tell everyone that Steve is his just as much as he is Steve’s.
What he does, in the end, is melt into Steve's embrace and kiss the junction of his neck and shoulder, grinning at the sharp intake of breath and distinct spike of arousal in his scent.
“Okay,” he agrees. He'll be ready one day, and they'll figure out their way when the time comes. “But for now … take me upstairs?”

in the case of the people vs. bell's hells...
and also the campaign 3 finale overall. disclaimer: this is gonna get long bc of my propensity to yap so i'm gonna simultaneously try to keep it short but also put it under a "read more." spoilers will be referenced throughout.
i wouldn't call these rent-lowering gunshots, but i desperately need some of the folks in this fandom to get a grip. so instead i'm asking: walk with me. hold my hand. i am looking you in the eyes and want this fandom to be a nice place. please forgive me for any attitude but i am tired of being talked down to.
"they never faced any consequences" consequences are the result bad dice rolls. of which they had plenty. if you think their narrative choices should have resulted in more punishment, say that. but i think you missed the part where they have targets on their back from several factions and now-mortal deities and you need to kill the cop in your head.
"it was too confusing and the pacing was bad" i don't even disagree with this takeaway. i will say this was actually the easiest campaign for me to follow. m9 is so fun, but was very narratively scattered at times. however, i think this is just the nature of ttrpg/actual play. it's not scripted. it's messy and sometimes you'll zone out about it. sometimes what the players want isn't what grabs you personally. it doesn't mean they're wrong or bad to play it that way.
"i fell off c3 and everything i've heard about the finale is stupid" fall off, then. totally fine, i'm not here to stop you, sincerely. and not to hurl cliches, but with tabletop it really is more about the journey than the destination. without context, you are missing too many pieces to pass judgement. that's all i'm gonna say on that.
"the other PCs were just so much better" i gotta say this one seems like a skill issue lol. there's not a single party i haven't loved with my whole heart, but they satisfy different purposes or dynamics! vm was destined for greatness. m9 was destined to pull important strings. bh was destined to shake up the order of things. they were supposed to be controversial in-world. they're salt of the earth, rising far beyond their stations ever expected. they became important at work and it very nearly ruined their lives.
"it was like sitting in a philosophy 101 class" praytell what philosophy classes that you've sat in discussed the ethics of magic, direct divine involvement in human* lives, and potential outcomes that would come along with killing all the gods or releasing something called the god-eater. look. i grew weary with the rehashing of these conversations too, really i did. that said, i think it needed to play out this way in order for the finale to go the way it did.
allow me to explain. one of the defining qualities of bell's hells was how different they all were. whether it's their perspectives, life experiences, backgrounds, desires, aspirations... you get it. this was the point. they were bound together by compassion and love for each other. and this extended to those they stood for personally, and those their friends cared about. it was how they approached ruidus, the gods, the people of vasselheim. and they walked the walk and trusted the process, prepared to face anything. including death.
*obviously including all exandrian/ruidian races beyond just human
"the finale cheapened the ending of vox machina" it didn't. i'm sorry but it very fundamentally did not and if that's your takeaway from a change of circumstance ~30 years down the line, i am worried that you are too lost in the sauce due to favoritism. if your takeaway from vax being allowed to return to the material plane is that now his conclusion from 30 years ago was just him going on a work trip, that is a you problem.
the narrative doesn't treat it like that. the characters don't treat it like that. the cast doesn't treat it like that. let me repeat myself: if you think vax's c1 ending is now nothing more than a glorified work trip, that is a you problem.
life goes on. the state of the world is changing constantly, especially in a world with gods and magic and different planes of existence. matt allowed these players to have direct involvement in the ways it changes. if vax was allowed to return in some capacity as a result of those changes, the cast made that happen. it wasn't even on bell's hells priority list! this was a natural change of circumstance. if that's the kind of thing you find upsetting, maybe unpack that elsewhere.
i'm gonna wrap it up here but i hope you keep this in mind: if you don't like a thing anymore, you can absolutely drop it. you don't need anyone's permission. but what i ask is that if you want to engage in thoughtful conversation and criticism about it, you keep these things in mind.
i don't believe this show or cast to be above criticism. i have plenty of critiques of my own. but the campaign three finale was the opposite of bad. it was the most satisfying conclusion we could have possibly gotten. it was the culmination of the last 3 years with almost everyone who encountered bell's hells and honored the last 10 years of their hard work. i am so so proud of matt and the cast and i think you should be too.
#critical role spoilers#cr spoilers#cr#i needed to get this off my chest#hope this reads as equally petty and sincere bc i am so sick of being talked to like i'm an idiot for enjoying this#BY MY OWN STUPID FANDOM#i'm a writer with a comms/media studies degree i think you're just throwing a fit about things changing#if you really want to see a lackluster and insulting conclusion to a beloved franchise you should try dragon age veilguard#and if you're thinking about arguing with me in the comments or replies please reconsider#try self reflection instead

You. Please ramble about Rayllum, I need to be rambled at.
(Literally talk abt anything! I need to have the FEELS!)
god it's not like this is anything New in terms of how the fandom (or show) has been writing Rayllum for a while but by far the most satisfying thing about them in S7 for me is the reaffirmation of just how unconditionally ride or die they are for each other, for better or for worse
Like nothing that happened in S7 was really news to me? Of course Callum is going to mediate with Ez and Rayla but unquestionably inevitably take Rayla's side no matter what the cost and bail her out immediately when she gets in over her head, because saving his dad was the first thing she ever offered to him on that first night together of strange and reluctant allyship. Of course they're going to talk about planning a sweet quiet life together, whether in the Silvergrove or elsewhere. Of course Callum's biggest hesitation when it comes to dark magic again isn't that doing so would mean signing his death warrant, but what Rayla will think / whether she'd still love him and if he's letting her down. Of course he does it anyway because if he doesn't it'll mean her death alongside their friends and family ("if you love her, you'll be the you that can save her"). Of course Rayla will submit herself to something she wasn't willing to let either of her parents live through, of living without him if he truly thinks this is the way and needs her to do this for him (of course Callum is her whole heart whereas in her letter to him pre-S4, she thought she had only a piece of his). And of course on the other side of it all, Rayla still loves and accepts him unconditionally just as he's done for her
It was like, Incredibly On Brand "Callum takes the first step in the more batshit direction ('even if you have to sacrifice your sense of right & wrong') / because helping/saving her will always be the Right Thing To Do and then out of love Rayla follows him, stapling her sense of identity right on top ('an assassin doesn't decide right or wrong, only life and death')" + bonus Callum always chasing/following her down into the dark and dragging each other back into the light hand in (un)lovable hand, and barring that, completely willing to go down together in whatever way that means.
That said, just cause something is On Brand and within their pattern does not mean it's not delightful (and occasionally heartbreaking / thrilling) to watch, and I'll eat it up every time
Snake Boi Callum and Prime Enabler Rayla are a match made in heaven and hell and I cannot wait to see wherever they go next

Celebrate people it's happening. And if you don't want to be here for it then leave 🎉🎉
Q. I'm very confused by the reaction to the goodbye footage that was leaked. Did people honestly believe they weren't going to get a goodbye scene? They were always going to get one and just like every other scene in television it will be open to the audience's interpretation of the scene to decide what it does or doesn't mean.
A. I'm very confused by this ask, anon. No one is freaking out because they're getting a goodbye scene, of course they were always going to get a scene for just the two of them. People are freaking out because of how the scene is being framed. We have no actual context for the scene. We don't know what's coming before this scene or after this scene. We don't really have any dialogue, with the exception of a couple of lines, but the scene just doesn't look like a scene between two friends. It looks like a scene you would give a couple. They're touching. They both go to their tiptoes during the hug which makes them even closer than they already were. Buck initially goes to give the standard bro back tap but instantly stops and actually pulls Eddie in tighter. Right before the hug he appears to be smiling at Eddie but the minute the hug prevents Eddie from seeing his face it becomes crestfallen and sad. Look at the image before the hug where Buck gives him the cookies. Look how Oliver chose to play that. Hands crammed in his pockets, head down with a bashful smile. That is not a friendly posture. That is a flirty, nervous cutesy posture. Nothing about anything we saw in that footage said friends. That is why people were freaking out. And the fact that the network did nothing to prevent the footage from being 'leaked' is also kind of a big deal. It feels like they were testing the reaction. They are well aware of how that footage looks. And it feels like they allowed it to be leaked to see what the overall reaction to the appearance of an intimate scene, and yes a scene can be intimate without being outright romantic, would be. It felt like a sort of dry run to see how an intimate scene between the two of them might be received. And the reception was overwhelmingly positive. So it accomplished everything they wanted. It was free press, and it's been free press for the better part of 3 days now. And it was well received press. There was zero downside to allowing it to happen. So people were understandably excited.
I have received a ton of 'all media is open to interpretation' takes and that is just not at all accurate. Yes some scenes are intentionally vague or open to the viewers interpretation, but not most of them, and certainly not all of them. Take the final scene of The Sopranos. The scene fades to black with the family sitting in the restaurant eating. So the viewer gets to decide what happened next. Were they killed or did they live? Depends on who you ask. But most of the time there is a specific direction or point to a scene. The dialogue, the wardrobe, the set, it all contributes to what the creators want the audience to see, hear and take away from what they are watching. That's how you get a storyline. If everything was just open to whatever anyone's interpretation of everything was then they would just film random shit at random locations. That's not what happens. There is usually an intended purpose for most scenes The creators and writers are expecting their audience to have basic media literacy skills. And quite frankly 911 isn't being sneaky with what they're doing. Just because a particular viewer or group of viewers doesn't like a storyline doesn't mean the storyline isn't happening. They don't just get to say I refuse to acknowledge it so that means it's not happening. That's not how any of this works.
Thank you Nonny! Much appreciated, as always! 😋
Okay, listen... the time for 'the scene is open for interpretation' is OVER when it comes to Buddie.
The show has practically spelled it out to us that this is happening. Buddie is on its way! There's no stopping it!
We've been 'interpreting' scenes for a long time, up until season 6 really. But then everything changed when season 7 aired. We needed less and less interpretation and more conviction, because it's ALL right there!
We just have to start believing what we see and what the show is telling us. I think that's the most difficult thing of all for some people, actually believing that YES... what you think is happening? IT IS HAPPENING!
And this is happening. That goodbye scene in the rain? The fact that they get it in the first place? And separately from the rest of the 118?
What more could you possibly want to see? It's all right there!
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Shifty is a delight. I love how baffled and stressed he makes his new friends. I'd love if he met "Dirty Ford" and the rest of the canon crew because I think he'd also make them baffled and stressed (except the stressed is mostly just Dipper seeing this guy who says he's his alternate dimension cousin, an alternate version of the shapeshifter that tried to kill him, his sister, and his friends).
Shifty's just having a great time. His alternate tried to murder his not-cousins. Fascinating. Is this more evidence that nurture has more to do with the morality of shapeshifters, or do shapeshifters work differently in this dimension? Maybe he can track down alternate Marcy, Darcy, and Jon and ask.
Dirty Ford is feeling retroactive guilt about Shifty being sentient. Like he definitely heard Cat Ford mention that but he did not process that until confronted with Cat Shifty.
Mabel's chill and excited about this Shifty. Sure, his alternate scared her pretty bad but he's just a silly guy like Grunkle Ford. He comes from a world where Grunkle Stan turns into a cute little cat. She needs to know all the alternate family tea.
Stan's like that's a bit weird, but he did punch a pterodactyl to save a pig and triangle to save the world, so alternate shapeshifting nibling is just, sure why not. Although he wishes he would stop telling the kids so much about how his alternate self got cursed to become a cat every time he steals (lame). He's worried this might give the kids (Mabel) ideas about turning him into a cat.
Inflicting cat dimension shifty on most other dimensions is like this honestly. Shifty doesn't make it out of the bunker in most cases, but cat Shifty doesn't hold it against his alternate family, because that's not him. He's not frozen in a bunker, and while he might feel bad for the other guy, he's living life just fine.
Which just makes everyone feel more guilty about the whole thing. Shiftys contemplating the differences between nature vs nurture, and how fascinating it is that his alternate self maybe almost killed his alternate parents and cousins. Meanwhile Fords going :( did I freeze a kid? Would my shifty be like this if I gave him a chance? Is it too late? (The answer to that last one is yes, too late to have his shifty be anything like cat shifty).
Mabel starts out uncomfortable, but she warms up pretty fast. Cat shiftys right after all! He is a different person then the one who almost killed her! He's also weird and funny like her grunkle! He's sharing all the fun stories about his family with her! How come her grunkle Stan can't be a cat :(
Dipper spends the entire time trailing him and watching every move suspiciously. He's a shapeshifter! They're evil! C!Shifty just shrugs. Maybe shapeshifters are evil here? He doesn't know! Eventually C!Shifty would win him over with his crazy lore drops. What does he mean he has four parents? Who's Carla? There's a coven in town? Why were you fighting dinosaurs? Dipper would get so lost trying to figure anything out about him and forget to be scared.
Stan is unaffected, except he would rather this guy stop telling everyone about his alternate self. That guy's lame, turns into a cat and snuggles people? Stan wouldn't be caught dead doing that. Ever. He needs his family to stop throwing puppy dog eyes his way about it. It's not happening.

Do you have any thoughts about Mark's brother's "shitty book" being a bit of a catalyst for the changing behavior in the MDR team?
Is it a common experience for people in Mormonism/cults to find some kind of "outside 'shitty' media" that they enjoy and leads them to start questioning more of the "programming"?
i do have thoughts! unsure if they're unique or revolutionary insights, given that this is stuff that anyone might be able to infer from watching the show, but I can ramble about it a bit
so it is a really, really common cult tactic to disallow, or in lower-control cults, just heavily disapprove of certain types of unapproved material. this is a tactic of thought control - if you only consume things that don't contradict the cult's mindset, you are much less likely to be influenced by something that could lead to you questioning or acting out. (i'll note that mormonism is typically lower control in that regard - you're heavily discouraged and shamed out of consuming things that are impure, but there's no actual banned books list or anything.) cult members often end up with pretty limited worldviews and understanding of the broader world because of this.
because the pool of approved ideas in a cult like this is so very limited, it's not uncommon to have a lifeline out be something that seems very small and mundane to ordinary people. something like a group of non-cult friends, or a weekly class, or even a shitty book might give the cult member the much-needed experiences and insight that they need to realize that something isn't right. sure, ricken's book in severance is objectively full of shitty, self-centered platitudes, and is quite shallow, but to someone like mark s., who has never once heard that his interior experiences matter and that he shouldn't be controlled by his work, it is revolutionary. he needs a little self-centeredness to be able to escape the trap that lumon has put him into, frankly!
i'll also point out that limiting materials/approved experiences isn't just relegated to physically limiting what members can do. there is a heavy propaganda in almost all these cases against unapproved material and unapproved actions, saying that they will make the people who engage in them miserable, unfulfilled, impure, etc. etc. etc. while this particular tactic doesn't seem to work much on mark s., we do have an example of that kind of propaganda working on a severance character, which is of course irving.
irving in many ways is a perfect cult member. throughout much of season 1, he is deeply ideologically committed to lumon. he quotes the handbook like a bible, finds all his meaning and beauty in life through lumon teachings, and strives to be the best worker he can be for the sake of kier's vision. and like any good cult member, he fears what might happen if he contradicts what he's been taught to be. he might become tainted or imperfect if he does things that are banned or has thoughts or behaviors that aren't in line with what lumon approves of.
what he finds to free him of that is not reading material, but a relationship with burt. and though this is a little bit different than the original question, i do find it to be very emotionally similar to what I myself have experienced. if you're told all your life that doing something Wrong will make you miserable, but you discover that it makes you happy or gives you new insight into the world, it's a powerful catalyst to break free! you realize how much has been kept from you by a prison of fear, and you realize how much you've been taught was a lie.
irving has this experience with burt, realizes that what he has been taught makes him miserable, and it sets his attempts for freedom into motion. and this is a full aside now, but as a gay ex-cult member who used to be deeply committed to the cult, it's why i find myself Really resonating with his character. me too guy!!! a powerful experience of love outside of what you've been shown is Right can really do a number on your head for real.
but to answer your question finally - yes, it's common enough. a lot of cult members don't always break free because they have experiences with something Profound. it's often quite mundane but that mundanity shows them that there's more to life than what they know!
#narrates#cults tw#severance#this ended up being a bit of an irving ramble. i might do a full write up on his character eventually bc he feels super resonant to me

I gotta know how few neurotypicals do we have here it can't be that many
Undertale Sans - He has autism. It's not easy to tell, but put him in a room full of very loud people and you will see him show signs of getting wildly overwhelmed. He's also very obviously depressed, even though it's getting better and better now that he's on the Surface and finally got the help he desperately needed. Sans also has narcolepsy, and probably sleep apnea, which is why he looks so damn tired all the time despite sleeping all the time.
Undertale Papyrus - He has autism and ADHD! It's not fun every day but he's the King of finding ways to compensate for the bad sides (and by that I mean he hides everything until he can't and then goes to have a mental breakdown in his closet which exhausts him so much he has to sleep for twenty hours to recover :D Very sane way of compensating!). Papyrus is still learning to accept he doesn't think and act like everyone and that it can sometimes weird people out, or overwhelm people. But it's getting better.
Underswap Sans - He has ADHD as well. He is hyperactive physically and mentally. He can't focus on anything, he lives for the dopamine and he needs to have something to do all the time or he gets very frustrated and even angry in certain cases. On the bad days, he struggles a lot and can cry out of frustration of not being able to do anything. He has pills to help since he's on the Surface, which helped a lot and helped him to gain better control over his feelings.
Underswap Papyrus - He's born with hyperempathy, which is a rare soul trait. Basically, he's a sponge and is more vulnerable to people's feelings around him. He can sense them and even have an impact on them if he really focuses hard. But that means he's also very vulnerable to all of them, which can create mood swings when he's tired or not focus enough. That's mainly why he had depression Underground, as everyone was sour and angry, and it affected him a lot. Honey is lonely mainly because of that. Even if he's good at controlling it better with age, he struggles a lot in crowds and public spaces. Added to that, he has deep social anxiety and a fainting condition that's poisoning his life.
Underfell Sans - He has depression, but that's pretty much it. Red is struggling a lot with it, as it's hard sometimes to not consider himself worthless in a world where everyone thinks you are.
Underfell Papyrus - He has autism too. Edge isn't aware he is autistic, but it's so obvious to everyone else. He always struggled with making friends, he has a hyperfocus on war strategy to the point it's scary how good he is and he has autistic meltdowns regularly when things are not going how he planned them. Edge has tendencies to depression as well, even if it tends to get better over time.
Horrortale Sans - He has so many things it's hard to keep the count. He's autistic, he is depressed, he has narcolepsy like Sans, but he also has all of his memory problems, he gets extremely overwhelmed in a crowd, and he struggles to do anything because sometimes it's just not working. He also has something similar to the sundown syndrome, when he can randomly get aggressive, being agitated, confused, anxious, or lost for no apparent reason, around sunset. It can be dangerous for everyone, Willow usually locks him in his room when it happens. Everything they tried to stop it didn't stop it entirely, but they're still trying. Oak also has PTSD of Undyne's attack and all the bad things he did Underground.
Horrortale Papyrus - He has autism and ADHD, being Papyrus but older, but added to that, he has severe depression and generalized anxiety. The depression is slowly getting healed with all of his health problems, but it seems the anxiety is here to stay. He struggles mainly with how he looks, to the point he completely dissociated and doesn't call himself Papyrus anymore, and what he has to do Underground to survive. Like Oak, he has PTSD from what happened, which is triggered by seeing blood or injured people. It's completely paralyzing him when it happens and it's hard to snap him out of it.
Swapfell Sans - Nox has severe depression and unlike the others, it got worse and worse after he reached the Surface. Everyone including him knows the cause of it is Toriel, but she's holding him in her grasp and won't let go easily. Nox knows what he has to do to get better, but that's not that easy to do. He has a tendency to dissociate too when he's killing people. That's a secondary effect of his very high level of violence, and it's mostly never going away as well.
Swapfell Papyrus - He has severe depression as well but treats it like it's all a morbid joke, which is worrying. However, he's going regularly in therapy and he is definitely getting better and better, even though he doesn't always take care of himself. Rus managed to escape his Underground's alcohol and drug addictions with therapy, which definitely helped him to get better.
Fellswap Gold Sans - Wine has a photographic memory and a great sense of deduction. That's why he is so dangerous because he remembers everything and uses what he finds to make things go his way. He clearly also lacks empathy, but that's caused by his very high level of violence.
Fellswap Gold Papyrus - Coffee has autism, duh, and generalized anxiety. Getting wrapped in a bubble his entire childhood clearly didn't help dealing with it, and it got worse when he got out of the Underground, as Coffee pretty much knew nothing of the outside world and got scared of everything. But he's starting to learn how to deal with everything, now that he has access to the internet. Coffee is a selective mute as well, which goes with his anxiety. Sometimes he gets so scared he can't talk at all. He knows how to sign and feels more comfortable signing with people he doesn't know by the way.

AO3 going "we shouldn't just have a MCU Captain America category, we need a Chris Evans one and an Anthony Mackie one" is so weird to me as a Doctor Who fan. We have way more stuff. We get by with the categories we have just fine. All you have to do is put in a tag for 9th Doctor or, in this case, Sam Wilson Captain America or something. Why does this need a second category? And why are the categories named after actors? Nobody calls them that. My MCU friends call them Sam and Steve.
I don't go here but this is just so weird. Like. What is the point, genuinely? Whatever happened to "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"? And Sam's movie isn't even out yet. Who's to say we're even going to get enough Sam-centric fics for this to be an issue?
I try never to assume bad faith but this looks so, so out of touch. It's like your mom coming into your room and rearranging things without your permission, then telling you she cleaned it for you because she knows you're going to go shopping and buy new stuff. And then you go, "I wasn't planning on that, and I didn't ask you, actually?" and she shrugs and says you can't move your stuff back to where it was.
I really hope they don't do this to the Doctor Who fandom. I don't want separate categories for every actor who has played the Doctor. And I don't even want to imagine what a clusterfuck this could be when applied to comic characters. Especially since AO3 is willing to split categories for something set in the same continuity. Even canon doesn't split the second Captain America into a different category than the first. It's not "2nd Captain America: Brave New World".
The vibe here is "I don't go here but I think I can help!" when nobody asked for that. It's like my cat trying to help me by knocking ornaments off the tree.
--
Ah, I see we're descending into Did Not Look At The Tags on this one.
Disambiguating with actor or director names isn't new. I'm skeptical that it will be useful here, but it's something AO3 has done for years.
In what sense do you have more stuff? More Doctors? Yes, that's true, and on Teaspoon, everything was organized by them. But if you mean AO3 works, you don't.
All of Doctor Who currently has 91,281 works.
The old Captain America movies tag (now synned to the Chris Evans one) has 114,257.
I guess if you go up to Doctor Who & Related fandoms, you just squeak through with more at 114,874, but come on, dude, the sheer might of stucky dwarfs anything in Who and even exceeds the total works for new Who, and that's the issue going on here.
From the sound of things, people are trying to figure out a way to let works be more findable when they're more about later developments in the continuity. I suppose people are tagging too much past or background stucky for just filtering the ship to work or there's too much where a cap!so-and-so additional tag doesn't indicate what people wish it would. (Personally, I think this is an unsolvable problem, but I see why people are trying.)
Frankly, this would all be better solved by a return to reccing culture and more Sam-centric bookmark collections and recs lists, but wranglers don't control that.

Cameron as Lockwood was amazing and the show writing definitely had him analyzed really well what Lockwood would've been like if he was older, instead of 15 as he was and Lucy being 14 and George being also 15 at the beginning of the book series
Yes, 18 yo Lockwood would appear more tired even from the first episode or maybe that's just Cameron lol because he's been thru a lot for years, as he's aged up by 3 years, but I keep thinking of the 15yo Lockwood who's still got his twinkle, his hopes. For me, Cameron!Lockwood is anxious and visibly trying his best, book!Lockwood doesn't know the kind of out of depthness he's actually in if he's a normal kid in a normal universe.
Cameron!Lockwood is hanging by a thread, book!Lockwood (putting aside our famous hc that the books romanticize Lockwood because it's from Lucy's pov) is a kid who stepped into a sinkhole and he's sinking slowly into it but he doesn't know it
I'm a sucker for the early teens books characters because those things that they changed and/or wrote to become more dramatic and/or didn't land as well as they would've if they weren't on tv....is because they're early teens in the books
This hollowed out grieving boy will not have the mind for anything else other than what he thinks is essential at that age; his company, his house, his livelihood, his looks and his friends. He's had enough at 15
It took him longer to reach the romantic attachment conclusions not because he didn't realize his feelings; being a ghost hunter means you gotta emphatize and understand why ghosts are acting the way they did, even if he didn't go as far Lucy did. It's because he's 15
Those awkward gaps in the books where Lucy was doing more than she should and we were all like, pls react the way a normal guy who likes a girl would, and he didn't? That's because he's literally 15/16. He doesn't know how to react like that. He was mad at Lucy for going against his orders as her employer because he didn't know how else best to react. Yet. Best he can do is try to cheer you up awkwardly with "you know I'd die for you". And he was super sincere when he said that.
He's trying to stay a company afloat at 15 and possibly younger than that when he first met George. He doesn't have the mind capacity for anything else. His energy is spent so much on being on top of things as the leader, appearing charming as he best know, getting as much good cases as they can, keeping the company and himself fed and sheltered; see how he treated Lucy in THB-- it's because he thinks what he did was right; he thinks keeping Lucy alienated was a way to keep her safe, he employed Holly specifically because he wanted the company to work smoothly, better
The kid who basically went suicidal mode because he didn't know how to deal with Lucy leaving the co. had probably just turned 16/17ish. They've only reached the age they were in the show i think, in the latter part of the books series
Yes angsty and capable 17/18 y/o Lockwood is great but can you imagine being in a younger time in your life and doing what he was trying to do? That's angsty younger, and capable 15ish y/o kid
It's not a vast difference in age, but I would sooner send a 17 year old kid to buy groceries than a 15 yr old if I had the choice
The age factor messes me up everytime because Lockwood lost his family and he's managing a company at younger than 15. Lucy left home at 14. 14. She lost her colleagues/friends at younger than that. That awkward, no filter George is 15. That kid who's also trying his best to manage the food intakes in the house the way he knew how to before Holly arrived was in his early teens
You turn to look at Flo and she's just a little bit older than the trio. Flo is older than Lockwood in the books iirc but still probably younger than show Flo. And she was already traumatized and messed up. I actually think show Flo is more sane than book Flo (maybe show Flo had better coping mechanisms lol)
Things make more sense in the show with 17/18/18ish characters managing the company. Normal kids are about to leave school at that age. 17ish are not adults but they're old enough that it's believable and not alarming that they're living together, they're fighting together with no adults supervision,
but imagine being younger than that...and no adult supervision, and it's not merely that it's all shenanigans, it's that they're early teens kids trying their best the way they know how too. In other words, too young it makes me wanna cry. If i was a character in the books, I'd adopt them all
To reiterate the wildness of it all, imagine you're agreeing to sending your 15yo brother and his friends to a haunted mansion where the owner is a homicidal geezer who wanted ro silence them by pretending to ask them to solve the haunting of his mansion WHERE PEOPLE HAVE ACTUALLY LOST THEIR LIVES
That's book one.
Do you realize how skrunkly and the extent of out of depthness they all had in the books because of how much younger they were in them and i wanna hug them sm
