rereading some of my favorite classic fan fics and again just so struck by the fact that mainstream fiction could never give me what you people give me every day for FREE. you're all the exact level of poetic and deranged that i'm endlessly searching for. no one is doing it like fic writers.

elena thinks conquering the chaos will reveal the true nature of everything to her and lila is aware of chaos as the one true nature even when she tries to conquer it. the girl who owes her life to words and numbers and the girl who owes her life to the sky and the sea and they are both afraid of being swallowed by their life source because they're at the mercy of these forces... it's how elena loves her books so much she can't stand that her life revolves around them and it's how lila learns to swim so quickly and spends too much time in the water, but she is the one to turn back home and away from the sea. and it's also how lila's greatest source of comfort is little women, a book, and her computers that she initially built out of paper and numbers and it's how elena's greatest source of comfort is the sea and how she shines and blossoms by the water and how her mother took her to the beach way before lila and her tried to see it as kids... lila is the sea and elena learned how to swim first and elena is the books and lila was the first one to learn how to read...

There's something about both innocent and punished Hunter having the same scar on their face that just makes me sooooo ofjkskakakfjgjekakd. like, we have innocent who was once Mike's best friend, who is still an ally when the circumstances align, and then we have punished who is absolutely not an ally or a friend, who has gotten into physical fights with Mike who was even killed when a fight got that intense, and who is often thought of by Mike as the most cruel and they both have the same identifying feature.

Thinking about how Catra and Adora's trauma shaped them in very different ways today. Adora was shoved into the role of Protector, of being a leader, of having to look out for everyone. So of course she developed a stronger need to worry about other people, often at the cost of herself. Meanwhile Catra was put in a position where barely anyone liked her, where everyone picked on her and she was never really given a reason to worry about them, because she had to worry about herself first. Any attempt to help other people got her hurt, and she was taught from a very young age that you need to look out for yourself and the few people you find that are Safe.

It's not a matter of "which one is Inherently a better person", it's a matter of them being put into different roles shaped them in different ways. Adora was raised to be a shield and a weapon, taught to never care about herself ONLY other people, Catra was taught from a young age that nobody cared about her and that everything was dangerous. Do I make sense here

Shockwave, who would later be brought what's assumed to be a corpse, discover the spark inside barely clinging to life, and bring it back from the brink. Flatline sticks around out of gratitude towards the bot who rebuilt his body, and in doing so, is able to recover his sense of purpose.

i want to see more middle-aged characters who emphatically don't have their shit together, but not because they're in denial about something or otherwise oblivious to the often very obvious reasons for their problems.

where's the chaotic uncle who just has really bad adhd and meds are not an option for whatever reason (setting, allergies etc.)? where's the autistic person with bipolar disorder who's doing everything right but just can't hold down a job? where's the "addict" who's actually deliberately self-medicating for a chronic condition because better treatment is not available? where are the queer people who've never been in denial but could not live the lives they wanted for one reason or another and are now dealing with the fallout?

denial and obliviousness can make excellent plot devices, but i would like to see some self-aware human disasters. and not the "stubborn old person too set in their ways" variant, either!!

The world exists in such a baffling state of simultaneous sex-aversion and sex-hegemony. Every social platform on the internet is trying to banish sex workers to the shadow realm but I can't post a tweet without at least two bots replying P U S S Y I N B I O. People are self-censoring sex to seggs and $3× but every other ad you see is still filled with half-naked women. Rightwingers want queer people arrested for so much as existing in the same postal code as a child and are also drumming up a moral panic about how teenage boys aren't getting laid enough. I feel like I'm losing my mind.

the whole seeking peace after trauma aspect to io has become such a big facet of them over recent years. it's the end goal for them, to finally and completely take their life out of the hands of the people who have puppeted it both from the start (venadeus) and for centuries (col, the hounds). io is, as it stands, in a permanent state of 'can't grieve yet' and the closure to finally start grieving and live their own life completely and wholly comes in a cascade after they finally admit to themself that there is no redeeming col and that something must be done for good. col still living is why io is in their permanent grief limbo. and of course there is the problem that venadeus has considered io nothing but a tool for himself since the moment they were conceived, but io ends the venadeus line with themself, once and for all. they hate that they were always meant to be a sacrificial lamb, but becoming the next and final venadeus gives them the things they've desired and a means to fully become themself. they get power - they get so much power as to practically be untouchable, and with it they simply seek the peace that had been taken from them centuries ago. it's hard getting there, admittedly, resurrecting as a god is something they have to claw through tooth and nail, but the end makes it worth it.

being the older sibling is the toughest. i seriously don't care what others say. if you are the oldest, you were the trial child. you are the third parent. everything that you do you do without knowing the risks and losses so that you can warn your younger siblings not to make the same mistakes again. and it can cost you a lot, especially when you have to impress your parents as well in life.

being an older sibling is like. you've never known a life without me. mom yelled at me and it taught her she never wanted to yell at you. I painted my room purple and grey and then you did too. we live in the same house but I haven't spoken to you in months. I don't know your favorite color. I saw it was going to rain so I picked you up from school on my way home so your books wouldn't get wet. i was so worried when you woke up sick when you were three. you don't remember being sick. mom and dad made their worst mistakes with me and I'm glad they didn't make them with you. I'm doing everything for the first time so you won't be in the dark. I don't know any of your friend's names anymore. I used to know them all. if something happens to mom and dad you won't have to worry because everything will fall to me. you don't like to be home alone but even if you don't see me just knowing I'm there makes you feel better. at least that's what mom told me. you still give me jars to open for you because you can't quite get them. I only see you during dinner. i'd never even think about missing one of your concerts. I stand at the counter when I eat and now you do, too. when offered a selection of books you picked the same one I did when i was your age. I'm terrified you compare yourself to me. I love you.
