I do totally see and like their point that at least sparknotes is written by a real person summarizing the actual meaning of the story
But also yes reading the actual book should be fun instead of a chore, so why bother faking it?
Also also no summary in the world is gonna have the same creative choices, emotional subtleties, etc etc etc as the actual art of the author
For example, new moon (yes twilight bad but this part really stuck out in my mind, and I’ve heard a reviewer also talk about how crazy effective this was. I don’t read much so just bear with me lmfao). There’s a WORLD of difference between “once Edward left, Bella entered a depressed state” vs “October. November. December. January.” How can you say you love a book when you didn’t read the authors choices?

abusers when they're cruel and unjust to you: well Life Isn't Fair, you better get used to it! You better learn how to deal with it sooner than later!
abusers when life is even slightly unfair to them: throw blame left and right, demand for everyone to go above and beyond to get them Justice and Fairness, claim themselves the Biggest Victim of the Entire World, never let it go, take it out on everyone else, never attempts to find a way to deal with it

was talking to a friend yesterday and we got onto the topic of rule 34 (for those that are unfamiliar: rule 34 is that if it exists there’s porn of it), and something in my twisted little brain said, “look up TUA.” like i didn’t WANT to i was just curious😭😭 save yourselves. don’t do it. i wish i could scrub my brain with bleach.

do you want a pipeline to more great fics?
look at your favorite authors’ bookmarks.
if you like their style, the chances are decent that the fics they like might be something you like as well. and! you’ll often find fics that don’t show up when you sort overall by kudos or bookmarks, fics that are lesser known because the writer is that author’s friend or someone they keep track of. and if you’ve read most of their bookmarks already? then you know they have good taste and it’ll be even more worth it when you find one you haven’t read.
I have four tabs open of different authors’ bookmark pages and I’ve been getting hits from each one
I am incredibly serious right now when I beg you all, please, and if you have Twitter or Tiktok or whatever to please spread the word: click on an author's profile on Ao3.
You want to know if an author has written more? Want to know if they're still writing? Want to see more from them? Want to know if they've written a trope or kink or sex scenario you enjoy?
Click on their name. And look at their profile.
I cannot tell you how many times in the last six months someone has read a new or newer fic of mine and said they (a new reader who has read nothing else I've done) "can't wait to see what you do next!" I've written 50+ fics and over a million words already.
"I don't know if you're still writing..." click on my profile. I am. I literally wrote a 128k+ fic for that ship last month.
"Would you ever do X?" "Please do Y!" I already did. Click on my name and look at my works.
Archive of our Own is a library. It's an archive. Not social media. It is your responsibility to fight back against the laziness that corporate algorithms have trained into you.
Click my author name. Just click it. Just click it.
Before you demand more, or ask if a writer will do XYZ, or wonder if the author still writing, or anything - click on their profile. Click on the author's profile.
I'm not trying to be mean or condescending or anything like that. I'm just exhausted. It's disheartening and frustrating to repeat myself ad nauseam, because someone couldn't take thirty seconds to do the tiniest bit of work to see if I've written lately, if I've written more for their ship, or scan my works to see if I've written what they're asking for. Please. Please. I'm begging.
Click the author's name, and explore before you ask.

Story time (if you're interested)
This scene from "Dear Comrade" is so funny to me, because it reminds me of the time I went hitchhiking in a graveyard.
I had gone to visit the grave of Dorothy Kilgallen, but I hadn't realized that only the first few cars of the train would actually have their doors open to the small platform. I ended up getting out a full stop away and I was not wearing good walking shoes.
I found this woman in the graveyard next to the one I needed to be in. She offered me a ride, I of course, hesitated. She grabbed hold of her rosary that she had hanging up on her car's dashboard and said, "Do you see this? Do you know what this means? It means I'm Catholic. I can't hurt you."
The absolute conviction and honest naivety really sold me, and I got in her car.

and yes, i do fully recognise the irony of me criticising a book for being overwritten (me, the devotee of the m-dash, the adulant of the run-on sentence, the guy who never met a semicolon he did not take to bed)
