Random DMBJ Trivia Part 2
Tumblr media
Wu Xie is 181cm or 5'11''. Hei Yanjing is 185cm or 6'1''.
In the novel, Hei Yanjing has a degree in music and anatomy from Germany. In The Lost Tomb, Wu Xie studied in Germany and in Tomb of the Sea, Huo Daofu also studied in Germany.
He Longlong, who played Huo Daofu, was an actor in an agency NPSS owns. He left the agency before Reunion aired and as a result, wasn't included in any promotional pictures for the show.
Li Cu was born sometime around 1996 in the novels. Based on this, he will be 28 years old in 2024.
Wu Xie has described Zhang Haiyan/Zhang Hailou as an "evil madman" and reminded him of Hei Yanjing.
Hei Yanjing's birthday (January 23) and Xie Yuchen's birthday (October 3) likely originated from official merchandise that was released.
One of the head writers for Ultimate Note, Tian Liangliang, also worked as a screenwriter on The Lost Tomb 2.
Qi Yu's name has been mentioned in Volume 2 and Restart. However, in the animation Buried Tree Devil and the television adaptations The Lost Tomb 2 and Reunion, his name was taken out.
The color of Zhang Qiling's tattoo was initially described as being é’č‰² (QÄ«ngsĆØ) which can mean blue, green, blue-green, or even black. This is why the color is described as green in Cavern of the Blood Zombies and may be why the tattoo is so blue in The Lost Tomb. In later novels, the tattoo is described as black.
More than six thousand modifications were made to the online version of Sand Sea 2 to meet publishing requirements.
The artist company that worked on the early editions of Wu Xie's Privates Notes, also worked on the Daomu comic.
Part of the Warehouse 11 arc in Reunion: Sound of the Providence was not included in the final product which means the Warehouse 11 arc was intended to be even longer.
In the Restart comic, Boss Jiao feeds an unloyal employee to his pet alligator named Charlie.
The first chapter of DMBJ was posted to Qidian in July 2006. The novels will be 20 years old in 2026.
Zhang Qiling's iconic blue hoody is said to have originated from the first edition of the Daomu comic. However, other fans believe it originated from early official artwork by the same artist company which was subsequently replicated in fan art.

Hey Reddit Migration and New Twitugees, Love Danmei?
I heard there's a new Tumblr immigrant wave coming, so time to shout out the danmei art source blogs again!

Hils Watches Mysterious Lotus Casebook - Ep 26
Tumblr media
Li Lianhua, one of the most brave and brilliant minds of his generation: Yeah, this place is creepy. I'm out.
Tumblr media
Very much enjoying Fang Duobing and Di Feisheng working together to protect Li Lianhua. I hope we get more of that.
Tumblr media
Amazing work, all of you. A+
Tumblr media
This really is the worst kept secret in the jianghu. I think Fango Duobing is the only one who doesn't know at this point
Tumblr media
Oh my god is the wine made of people?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was going to make a joke that Li Lianhua plays up being pathetic when he's got two big strong men there to protect him. But actually it's probably not far from the truth. How many times do you think he's had to stay awake, or at least on guard, for fear that someone might figure out his identity and come looking for him. Now he's with two people one of whom knows his identity and one who has sworn to protect him no matter what. It's actually safe for him to relax and get some sleep so he's going to do just that.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh my god. Fang Duobing offered Di Feisheng some bread and Di Feisheng took it! I'm crying.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
AND THEN DI FEISHENG SHARED HIS WATER WITH FANG DUOBING. Are they in love now? Is that's what's happening here? MY HEART.
Tumblr media
Look at those eyes. Has he learned the puppy eyes from Fang Duobing?
Tumblr media
Why do I feel like Di Feisheng is about to ruin this romantic moment
Tumblr media
Oh, shit, whatever they got drugged with has triggered his poison
Tumblr media
How quickly Fang Duobing has gone from 'I'm not saving him!' to being genuinely worried about him
Tumblr media
Of course Li Lianhua was just pretending to sleep and now he's going to fight a hoard of martial arts zombies by himself because his boyfriends both got drugged. Li Lianhua, that will kill you!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You don't normally mind
Tumblr media
I know they needed to sort out their injuries because the zombies are attracted to the scent of blood, but the three of them seem remarkably unconcerned that Li Lianhua just got kidnapped by a zombie
Tumblr media
Feeling Fine and Normal about this
Tumblr media
Haha! He literally only got as far as saying the A of A-Fei's name and Di Feisheng did what Fang Duobing was going to ask him to do. I think this means they officially share a braincell now
Tumblr media
This dude: Ohhhh! I didn't realise the three of you were together
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can see why he's the detective. Did the missing head give it away?
Tumblr media
I love that Di Feisheng has just naturally taken on the role of leader while Li Lianhua is gone. He might not remember being the leader of his sect but instinctively that's who he is
Tumblr media
We're in DMBJ territory again
Tumblr media
Oh you know shit is real when the family name gets dropped
Tumblr media
He's just a little dude who needs his two big strong boyfriends to help him up

Chapter 6 is up and this fic is officially complete!
I'm not 100% happy with it, to be honest. I usually write oneshots that are much shorter than this multichap work, which clocks in at over 25,000 words. I feel less in control of each word and image here.
But it allowed me to cram in various things I wanted: Li Lianhua holding a baby, Li Lianhua and Fang Duobing in the hot springs, disability accommodations and chronic illness in an ancient Chinese setting. And I'm working on my perfectionism.
Thanks once again to my beta and cheerleader @mekare-art, as well as other friends on the DMBJ Yu Cun Discord, without whom my partial draft would probably never have seen the light of day.
I'm busy adjusting to graduate school and have way less free time, so if you guys want another fic in this series (the Di Feisheng-centric one I've mentioned several times) you're gonna have to poke me (ramble about your feels, bounce ideas and brainstorm, etc) šŸ‘€
Hello MLC fandom~
I've started posting the third fic in my post-canon series. The first chapter is up now and updates will be weekly. Summary:
ā€œXiaobao,ā€ he says slowly. ā€œWhat are you going to do after this?ā€ Fang Duobing is scraping the bottom of the bowl. Without looking up, he makes a confused sound. ā€œStay with you, of course. What are you talking about?ā€ ā€œI donā€™t mean today. I meanā€¦ā€ Li Lianhua feels his expression grow clouded. ā€œIn the future.ā€ The delicate sound of porcelain against porcelain comes to a halt. Fang Duobing lowers the bowl. ā€œStay with you,ā€ he repeats, quietly. Or: while visiting Tianji Manor with Fang Duobing, Li Lianhua has his first flare-up since his return.
It's Lotus Trio (albeit with more Fang Duobing/Li Lianhua, especially at first) plus another OT3 (He Xiaofeng/Liangyi Xianzi/Zhan Yunfei). If I'm not mistaken, this is the first fic in English on AO3 for that throuple :O
You may have seen me refer to this fic variously as the one where Li Lianhua holds a baby, and the one with the hot springs scene (that I got stuck writing for nine months). Regardless how it's received, I'm happy that I'm finally able to share this work!

DMBJ Names and Honorifics Explained - Donā€™t trust the subs!
Iā€™ve no idea if someone has already made such a post, but I really like explaining Chinese as itā€™s also good practice for me, so here we go.
If you are a non-Chinese speaker, you might have noticed inconsistencies in subs when referring to all the different characters. And / or that the names donā€™t seem to match up to the sound of the name.Ā
So hereā€™s a little cultural and character guide to understanding DMBJ names.
Why are there so many names, nicknames, and honorifics for one person in a Chinese drama?Ā To chalk this all up to nicknames is... grossly over-simplifying things. The thing with names / honorifics is very rooted in Chinese culture itself. Chinese culture is one heavily indexed on relations and hierarchy, so depending on your place in theĀ ā€˜hierarchyā€™, whether itā€™s society or family, you will refer to each other as different things. As an example to illustrate complexity, where in English, ā€˜uncleā€™ refers to all male siblings of either of your parents, in Chinese, your fatherā€™s younger brother is addressed differently from your fatherā€™s older brother and also different from your motherā€™s brother.Ā
Chinese names and translation to English - Space? No space? Hyphens? Last name first?
So Chinese is a pictographic language. EachĀ ā€˜characterā€™ is one word, and one syllable exactly. Hence, you donā€™t need spaces or hyphens or anything in Chinese. Spaces and hyphens when romanized are purely for English speakersā€™ convenience.Ā
For example, in Chinese, the names would be written as wuxie, wusanxing, wangpangzi, etc. (And no such thing as capitalization either.) As a general rule of thumb, because for documentation purposes, the surname is separated out, Chinese people generally end up writing the given name all smushed together even if they are 2 words.
And yes, the surname always goes first. Other way is just... weird. Never happens.
Can you space out two words of a given name? Sure I suppose. Probably less seen.
As for hyphens with honorifics... sure? Iā€™m not sure if smush together or hyphen is more official actually...Ā
What are Chinese names? How do people pick a name?
Unlike English names, Chinese people compose their names. Which means... you can have anything from names that have literary eloquence and deeper meaningļ¼ŒlikeĀ ā€˜Wu Xieā€™, whereĀ ā€˜Wuā€™ is homonymous withĀ ā€˜Withoutā€™ andĀ ā€˜Xieā€™ meansĀ ā€˜Evilā€™, so Wu Xieā€™s name carries the meaning ofĀ ā€˜no evilā€™...
...to names that have little to no deep meaning and sometimes downright stupid sounding, likeĀ ā€˜Wang Pangziā€™ which does indeed translate to Wang Fatty lol.
Thatā€™s why if you ask Chinese people to provide common Chinese names, theyā€™ll stare at you blankly. Of course, thatā€™s not to say there arenā€™t some popular names, given people sometimes name themselves after famous people and there are plenty of generic ones as well.
But this is also why, when meeting for the first time, you might hear a lot of people explaining how their name is written (i.e. with which word), because there are a looooot of homonymous words and itā€™s impossible to tell how write someoneā€™s name without themĀ ā€˜spelling it outā€™.
How do Chinese people call each other by name?
Most Chinese names (surname + given name) will form 2-3 syllables (very rarely there will be 4).Ā
General rule of thumb:
- Using someoneā€™s full name is always generally acceptable (not to be confused with addressing them... thatā€™s a whole different game).
- You never refer to someone with one syllable. Which means if their given name is only one syllable, you pretty much always say both surname + given name together (Hence why Wu Xie is always Wu Xie and never ā€˜Xieā€™). If their given name is two syllables, you might call them by given name only if youā€™re familiar.Ā
Of course, there are tons of ways to give people nicknames (more explanation below), so you might end up only using one syllable of someoneā€™s name, but in conjunction with another prefix / suffix of sorts.
So yes, the subs sayĀ ā€˜Zhangā€™ for Zhang Qiling but thatā€™s BS no one has everĀ referred to him as simply ā€˜Zhangā€™. And for that matter, no one ever refers to him as simply Qiling either, though thatā€™s more out of habit than any rules of names. And finally, they rarely refer to him as Zhang Qiling at all... more explanation below.
Basic ā€˜prefixā€™ / ā€˜suffixā€™ / ā€˜honorificā€™ introductions relevant for DMBJ
These arenā€™t reallyĀ prefixes and suffixes and honorifics. Theyā€™re simply words. But for sake of simplicity, letā€™s just treat them as that.
-yeĀ (sounds like ā€˜yeahā€™) =Ā ā€˜Grandpaā€™ of the genericĀ ā€˜old manā€™ sense, but alsoĀ ā€˜masterā€™ orĀ ā€˜lordā€™ to indicate status / respect.Ā
Example usage:Ā Wu Sanxing (Wu Xieā€™s third uncle) - People like Pan Zi call him Sanye, which meansĀ ā€˜Third Masterā€™.Ā
It can alsoĀ be casually used by someone to refer to themselves in third person and indicate theirĀ ā€˜prowessā€™. Again, due to Chinese cultural relations, thereā€™s a lot of emphasis on hierarchy, so people often humorously refer to themselves in third person with a title of more seniority (ā€™this ancestorā€™ orĀ ā€˜this old missā€™).Ā
Example usage:Ā Pangzi always referring to himself as Pangye.Ā ā€˜Make way, Pangye is coming in clutch with the bombs!ā€™.
-shu (sounds more likeĀ ā€˜sooā€™) =Ā ā€˜Uncleā€™. This can be an uncle related, or not.Ā
Example usage: Wu Sanxing (Wu Xieā€™s third uncle). Wu Xie and hisĀ peers will generally call him Sanshu, because theyā€™re of the same generation and need to call Sanshu with some level of respect. Of course, Sanye is also respectful, so certainly Pangzi can call him Sanye. But Pangzi calling him Wu Sanxing would be disrespectful. (Zhang Qiling on the other hand, technically can call him whatever since heā€™s the oldest haha).
-ayiĀ (sounds likeĀ ā€˜ah-yeeā€™) =Ā ā€˜Auntā€™. Similar as uncle.Ā
Example usage: Chen Wenjing (in Ultimate Note, Sanshuā€™s former girlfriend). Youā€™ll notice Wu Xie addressed her as Wenjing-ayi. Of course, since she was a bit less familiar with them, and wasnā€™t always around, he and others will refer to her as simply Chen Wenjing... itā€™s complicated. The nuances of when itā€™s ok to leave off the suffix is an art form lol.
-ge (sounds like ā€˜guhā€™) = ā€˜older brotherā€™. Can also be related or not. Can be used alone, or doubled up (which tends to be cuter).
Example usage: Huo Xiuxiu refers to Wu Xie asĀ ā€˜Wu Xie-gegeā€™ and Xie Yuchen asĀ ā€˜Xiao Hua-gegeā€™. Pangzi told Yun Cai (the girl he crushed on) to call himĀ ā€˜Panggeā€™. And yes! This is theĀ ā€˜geā€™ in Xiaoge. More explanation below.
XiaoĀ (sounds likeĀ ā€˜shallā€™) =Ā ā€˜Smallā€™ orĀ ā€˜Littleā€™. This is often used in creating a nickname and used first before a name.
Example usage: Wu Xieā€™s second uncle will refer to him asĀ ā€˜Xiao Xieā€™. Wu Xie refers to Xie Yuchen asĀ ā€˜Xiao Huaā€™, which translates toĀ ā€˜Little Flowerā€™ and is a nickname based off his stage name, Jie Yuhua. And yes! This is the ā€˜xiaoā€™ in Xiaoge. More explanation below (because translating it asĀ ā€˜little older brotherā€™ makes no sense I know).
LaoĀ (sounds likeĀ ā€˜laoā€™ lol) =Ā ā€˜Oldā€™. Similar usage asĀ ā€˜xiaoā€™.
Example usage: I think I remember Granny Huo perhaps referring to Wu Laogou (Wu Xieā€™s grandfather) asĀ ā€˜Lao Wuā€™?Ā  But also, yes, his actual name has that word too.
Numbers - Numbers are very commonly used in nicknames.
Er (sounds likeĀ ā€˜areā€™) = Two / Second.
San (sounds likeĀ ā€˜sanā€™ lol idk) = Three / Third.
Hence why Wu Xie refers to his uncles asĀ ā€˜Sanshuā€™ andĀ ā€˜Ershuā€™. (And yes, their names themselves also conveniently carry the numbers...)
Youā€™ll never say ā€˜oneā€™ though. Instead, ā€˜daā€™ or big / large is used.
Names of the characters
Wow so only after all thatĀ can we begin to explain the many names... Letā€™s begin.
Wu XieĀ - Wu Xie is actually the most straightforward thank god. Most people will call him this, Zhang Qiling included.
AKA Tianzhen or even Xiao Tianzhen - This is nickname provided Pangzi gave him meaningĀ ā€˜naiveā€™ orĀ ā€˜innocentā€™, and what Pangzi calls him most if not all the time. Thereā€™s a phrase in Chinese too calledĀ ā€˜tianzhenwuxieā€™ to mean innocent, carefree, and pure. TheĀ ā€˜wuā€™ there is a different but homonymous word with Wu Xieā€™sĀ ā€˜Wuā€™, but the meaning and reference is clear (Chinese has looooots of homonyms and puns). This is also why that phraseĀ ā€˜My lifetime, in exchange for you a decade of innocence and purity.ā€™ from Zhang Qiling to Wu Xie is so heart-wrenching, because those last four Chinese words areĀ ā€˜tianzhenwuxieā€™, a poetic play on his two names. šŸ˜Ā
AKA Xiao Xie - Called by his second uncle, Wu Erbai
AKA Da Zhizi - Called by his third uncle, meaningĀ ā€˜big nephewā€™.Ā ā€˜Daā€™ here just means the oldest really. Wu Xie is Wu Sanxingā€™s oldest (but also only) nephew. AndĀ ā€˜nephewā€™ here too specifically refers to the son of your brother.
AKA Xiao Sanye - Called by Pan Zi, Bai Haotian (from Lost Tomb Reboot). Sanye here is in reference to how he dogs his third uncleā€™s footsteps all the time. And heā€™s the younger version so... there.
AKA Laoban or Wu-laoban - Called by Wang Meng, business partners because laoban meansĀ ā€˜bossā€™.
Zhang Qiling - Whew OK honestly, I donā€™t think of him asĀ ā€˜Zhang Qilingā€™ much at all, because very rarely do any of the other characters refer to him as Zhang Qiling. Most of the time itā€™s...
AKA Xiaoge - This is what Wu Xie and Pangzi refer to him a lot as. Xiaoge literally translates toĀ ā€˜little big brotherā€™, but that meaning is weird in English. So donā€™t think of it that way. Xiaoge is just a generic term for a young guy. Like...Ā ā€˜ladā€™? Lol. But heā€™s all mysterious and stuff so the generic term just stuck. This is also why in Tomb of the Sea, someone referred to Li Cu asĀ ā€˜xiaogeā€™, because he was indeed a xiaoge. But in Wu Xieā€™s heart, thereā€™s only one Xiaoge. ā¤ļø
AKA Menyouping - The name of this ship! Pingxie! This is what Wu Xie referred to him mostly as in his first POV novel. It meansĀ ā€˜stuffy oil bottleā€™ and communicates the sentiment ofĀ ā€˜poker faceā€™ or just someone with no expressions.
Note on Zhang Qiling: This name is actually a title rather than a name. Qiling is the title given to the Zhang patriarch responsible for handling the spirits of their ancestors... eh itā€™s complicated and warrants its own post if you want to know more.
Note onĀ ā€˜Kylinā€™: I know this is what the official translations had it, but like... wtf. What, no. Like, idk what happened here, but this is a terrible mistranslation. ā€˜Kylinā€™ or ā€˜Qilinā€™ is the name of the mystical beast of which Zhang Qiling has a tattoo of, but it isĀ two entirely different wordsĀ from theĀ ā€˜Qilingā€™. Donā€™t let the similarity in English spelling fool you. CompletelyĀ different words. Some translator thought Kylin might market better probably. But... no. Itā€™s just wrong. I have to do a double-take when I see people writingĀ ā€˜Kylinā€™. Come on translators, have more faith in your English speaking audience. Fans can adapt! Donā€™t butcher the name for sake of marketability!
Wang PangziĀ - Yes,Ā ā€˜Fattyā€™ is the accurate translation haha. Most people refer to him as Pangzi, including Wu Xie and Zhang Qiling.
AKA Pangye - Referred to by Pangzi himself, but also sometimesĀ people who are trying to suck up to Pangzi.
AKA Pangge - Referred to by his love interests.
Wu SanxingĀ - Wu Xieā€™s third uncle. See, I donā€™t even know what to call him by default because Iā€™m not sure what the subs tend to say.Ā
AKA Sanshu - Wu Xie and his friends will call him this.
AKA Sanye - Pan Zi and other people in the industry will call him this.
Hei YanjingĀ - Again, Iā€™ve no idea which name to use as his primary.Ā Translates literally to ā€˜sunglassesā€™. Not technically ā€˜black sunglasses because thatā€™s redundantā€™. See, even the spacing between his name here is unnecessary because this isnā€™t his official name, only a nickname. I donā€™t think we have his real name. But this version is generally called by most others I think?
AKA Hei Xiazi -Ā This meansĀ ā€˜black blind personā€™, and is what Xiaoge refers to him as... and some others.
AKA Heiye - Just a more respectful reference. Called by Xie Yuchen.
Xie YuchenĀ - Called by Xiaoge and others less familiar.
Jie YuhuaĀ - His stage name.
Xiao HuaĀ - Called by Wu Xie, as itā€™s a nickname built off of his stage name.
HuayeĀ - Called by Hei Yanjing and Pangzi, but more so out of humorous flattery than anything.Ā
.
.
Whew that was a lot. Just be glad this isnā€™t MDZS where people had courtesy names on top of all these names... I think Iā€™ll stop there, but feel free to shoot me any questions about other characters!

Due to Tumblr's limitation, I have to split them. There are still many artists I haven't listed yet, maybe some other time when I feel like doing it again (ā ā—ā ā€¢ā į“—ā ā€¢ā ā—ā )

PUTTING THIS NOTE BACK AGAIN (after i had just taken down my last pinned freak-out sigh)
For what it's worth, you can find me as XCZIEL almost everywhere: bluesky, discord, dreamwidth, pillowfort, twitter i never use... i even still have my livejournal (i am not, however, on insta or the ticking tok site)
feel free to message me if you'd like to keep in touch should tumblr continue it's current trajectory (exploding car. hammers everywhere.)
_
There are currently SO MANY fandoms going on in this space:
OKAY definitely a BTS (as of like May 2023, so ... yeah) and kpop hyperfixation currently ongoing, not sure when normal service will resume
ALSO i have decided to just go ahead and let myself post about random new books that are hitting the shelves in US stores - not reviewing or recommending, just passing on a heads-up because ... idk. For me it's equivalent to: "oh look cool rock!" or "guess what happened on My Show!" but it's "here's what just showed up on the shelves! " *jazz hands*
ok the kpop Thing officially "Begin"s with OnlyOneOf (watch their mv and dance practices you will not regret it)
all things Kinnporsche and associated cast
Official Liu Chang Addicts Club Member (2020)
full on Liu Sang/DMBJ/Daomu Biji fandom freefall: holy heck are there some talented writers artists & creators in this fandom!!
an increased amount of CDrama, KDrama, BLDrama reblogs
the related asian actor fandoms and cultural interest
preferential reblogging of Lee Soo Hyuk, Woo Do Hwan, and Liu Yuning - uh, *all* DMBJ actors actually
The Untamed (MDZS, but mostly CQL)
Scum Villain's Self-Saving System (Moshang!) and TGCF reblogs
80s music nostalgia always happening
Black Sails (perpetual)
Murderbot
Star Wars, mostly Rogue One and Andor
Stargate and SGA (perpetual)
X-Men (mainly XMCU and cherik)
Killjoys (for as long as folks are making gifsets - ā¤ u guys)
Marvel and MCU (still very conflicted, it's a one step forward two steps back situation)
plus a bunch more i've been in that come back around
Anyways, this blog is a mishmash of those, current events posts, cat and landscape pics, tumblr standard posts, fic recs, and memes.
I subscribe to the "if you like it, reblog it" philosophy of sharing creators' posts, because they put the effort in and deserve some appreciation.
Welcome!
Blanket creative works policy: if you ever see a headcanon, not!fic, tag ramble, or silly manip of mine that inspires you to write or art in any way: go for it!
just drop me a tag if you post it bc i'd love to see!
