Accountant Kong
So in NES Open Tournament Golf there is Kong that shows up working as an accountant. Many I've seen some people question who exactly this is so I decided to bring up possible candidates.
First off it could be Donkey Kong Senior the original Donkey Kong, though you'd think he would have his iconic red tie on. Another candidate is Donkey Kong Junior, we do know DK Jr. does grow up. However, this Kong's appearance doesn't look entirely like DK Jr. The third possible candidate or explanation in this case is they are another Kong we haven't seen before.

Mario Is Jumpman
There is a hypothesis there are 2 Marios, and Mario's father was named Jumpman and fought DK Snr. This is incorrect and ignores the context of all the games.
The Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia on pages 17 and 237 outright states before Mario had been through SMB he was referred to as Jumpman and has been through DKA and DKJ. "Mario was originally 'Jumpman' the hero of the arcade game Donkey Kong." "He was often referred to as 'Jumpman' at the time, and the name 'Mario' first appeared in a 1981 flyer."
There is also the Classic Outfit which Super Mario Odyssey canonized. You can also get the Classic Outfit with the following description. "This outfit is still loved by longtime fans. DK has never been a fan, though." A detail further confirmed on the Nintendo Website if you take a quiz you get this answer. "Mario wore red overalls in Super Mario Bros. but soon switched to his now famous blue outfit." In fact the Super Mario Odyssey Art Book on page 358 even further confirms this is what Mario used to wear. "The Classic Cap and Suit are modeled after his appearance here. Until his | appearance in Super Mario Bros. 2, his overall and shirt colors were occasionally swapped." Btw, this is probably referring to Lost Levels.
This further confirms Mario is indeed Jumpman, alongside a description for the DKA game from WarioWare Gold I mentioned in my Pauline is Lady post. "It was Mario to the rescue--for the first time!"
In The Art Of Super Mario Odyssey on page 358 "This is Mario’s first appearance. He had no name at the time and was referred to only as 'Jumpman.'" Which is further confirmed by the imagery and festival of New Donk City, which the Art Book again on page 358 is recreating the rivalry between Mario and DK. Of course even further backed up by page 6 of the Donkey Kong Country manual when it talks about Cranky being the original Donkey Kong. "In his heyday, Cranky was the original Donkey Kong who battled Mario in several of his own games." Or the fact DK Snr. was Mario's pet.
There is also the fact in reference to the games Miyamoto said it's always the same Mario.

The Kong Archipelago Location
So in an old developer interview from 1994 found on shmuplations, Miyamoto claims that "The Mushroom Kingdom looks to be on the outskirts of Donkey Kong's homeland, as seen in the game's ending…" in reference to DK 94's ending. So that seems to make it an open and shut case, DK's home is near the Mushroom Kingdom. Wellllll.... probably not. So with newer information from other games this piece of info in this interview has effectively been retconned. Thus DK's Tower is either not part of DK's homeland, or they went to the Mushroom Kingdom for the ending of the game. Why do I say this?
It's because in Donkey Konga 2 you can seen in the background of the menu, and from a scene from the story mode there appears to be a city in the distance across the water from Donkey Kong Island. In addition we actually see parts of this place for some of these levels for this game. This is more than likely the shoreline of the Metro Kingdom and would lead to Big Ape/ New Donk City. This would place the Kong Archipelago near the Metro Kingdom. Interestingly enough there is 2 sets of Islands on this Odyssey map near the Metro Kingdom that could fit the bill.
This would explain some other things. In Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze we see Stanley's Greenhouse from Donkey Kong III in the level Fruity Factory. This makes some sense, DK Snr. traveled on this island and gave Stanley trouble while on his way home. This also explains why it was so easy for the Kongs to get to Big Ape City in Donkey Kong Land. With that being said due to the trees I believe Mario Bombs Away would take place on one of these islands as well.

Donkey Kong Was Mario's Pet
So I've heard a few people claim Donkey Kong Senior was Mario's pet never had an actual source for this claim provided. But thanks to someone actual answering my question I was able to find the source and confirm it.
So on a website called Shmuplations there is an developer interview for the game Donkey Kong 94. In this interview Miyamoto reveals Donkey Kong is Mario's pet. He also reveals that Donkey Kong's motives for kidnapping Pauline was merely to get a rise out of Mario. Interestingly enough he refers to Mario as plumber working at a construction site. This could suggest Mario was already a plumber back during Donkey Kong, or it could only apply to 94. I would mention the type of plumber we see Mario and Luigi are in game is actual construction plumbers, so this could line up. But that's just speculation on my part. What Miyamoto said "He did that to get a rise out of Mario. Mario, the plumber, owns a gorilla and worked at a construction site; the gorilla, Donkey Kong, decided to annoy Mario by kidnapping the girl Pauline and running away with her."
From here Miyamoto says that Mario and Donkey Kong aren't actually enemies and the gameplay focuses around Mario outwitting Donkey Kong the prankster, which is why the original arcade game ends the way it does. What Miyamoto said, "Correct. That's why, when creating the ending for the original arcade game, I spent a lot of time thinking around the theme of the player 'outwitting the prankster', rather than trying to kill DK." From here the interviewer askes if Pauline is Mario girlfriend. From here Kameyama and Miyamoto being saying Pauline is Mario's ex, Mario giving Pauline the flick, the game taking place before Super Mario Bros., and Mario meeting Peach in this game. Now as for this part I'm unsure if it should be taken as useful to the canon for several reasons. Aside from the joking tone that has been established with them laughing, I don't think they would actual do this with Mario character in game. But also in future games with Pauline showing up in them and seeming to be on good terms with Mario, the jokes we see the 2 making here I don't think would make sense in canon.
In addition we have games like Super Mario Odyssey that establish Mario has a Classic Outfit he wore for awhile before switching it up. We see most of the classic era games have him using this outfit, and he only switches to his Modern Outfit by Super Mario Bros. 3. I mention this because Mario is wearing his Modern Outfit in Donkey Kong 94, in addition Donkey Kong is now sporting his tie. Given this game isn't just a remake of the original, alongside the joking tone, and later games that wouldn't make sense with this I'm pretty sure this game takes place at a separate time from the original Donkey Kong game.
Also, in a description for Crank in a Nintendo Online Magazine we get this description for DK Snr. This is a simple Google Translation but it is accurate. "He debuted in the arcade version of Donkey Kong as a gorilla bought by Mario as a pet."
That being said while some people would use this to confirm Mario owned Donkey Kong in Donkey Kong Circus, I don't think this would be the case. The game only establishes Mario is watching the performance as if he were part of the crowd, there is nothing saying he owns the circus. I think Mario probably bought Donkey Kong from the Circus. This would explain why they aren't actually enemies, and how they can play games like Hockey together.
I will say it is weird Mario owned Donkey Kong Senior as a pet, but then again pets work weirdly in the Mario world. Characters own Chain Chomps and just like Kongs they can speak in their own language.

Is Pauline Lady?
So there is debate on whether or not Pauline is the same person from the Donkey Kong Arcade game, or if they are a completely different character. So what is it?
So people people mention the Japanese manual for Donkey Kong 94, and they claim it says she's a separate character. However, I don't know how I would go about confirming this. In addition in an interview for DK94 Miyamoto implies the game was originally planned to be the original game expanded upon. Some people claim the Perfect Edition of the Great Mario Character Encyclopedia says Pauline is a separate character from the Lady from the original arcade game. However, I am unsure how useful the Encyclopedia can be towards the canon of the games. In the previously mentioned interview found in Donkey Kong 1994 Wonder Life Special - APE Inc. Official Nintendo Guide, people have claimed Miyamoto has said in this that Pauline is Lady. He never said this from what I can tell, though he does heavily imply they are the same person, "Donkey Kong, decided to annoy Mario by kidnapping the girl Pauline and running away with her." So while that may seem to be it, there is something else.... In the Toy Room of WarioWare Gold in the Nintendo Collection there is an Donkey Kong Arcade Cabinet. There is a description that goes with it that says, "this game debuted in arcades and introduced the world to Mario and Donkey Kong, who kidnapped Pauline. It was Mario to the rescue -- for the first time!" This seems to confirm Pauline and Lady are one in the same. This actually makes sense because Mario used to be called Jumpman but got the his named updated, and is still meant to be the same character. Also, while Pauline was a name given to her by the localization team, this is not the first time Mario characters have been given their names by the localization team. Case in point, the Koopalings and their names. Something the The Art Of Super Mario Odyssey on page 358 calls attention too as well and further confirms they are the same person. "At the time, the heroine was simply named 'Lady.' She appeared in several titles and, in Japan, was officially known as Pauline in the Game Boy version of Donkey Kong. In North America, her name was always Pauline."
Now someone might try to counter this with the fact her Smash Ultimate spirit labels her Lady and not Pauline. However, this doesn't mean they are not Pauline. But also, as I established in a previous post. Smash Bros. is not canon and thus information in it cannot be used for the Mario Lore.
But there is more... In Super Mario Odyssey you retrieve a present for Pauline's birthday which is a handbag. When you get this handbag the sound from the arcade game when you get the handbag in it plays. After giving Pauline the handbag she mentions it reminds her of the one she lost on "that terrible day." Now while Pauline has been kidnapped by DK Snr. a few times and DK III it implies it would have been a specific time. This would more than likely be in reference to the events of the arcade game. This would be furthered evident by the hat and umbrella that resemble Pauline's original one from said game. In addition to New Donk City having a lot of it's history surround the events of that game. The Art Book again on Page 358 confirms this. "These items are also dropped around New Donk City, and they make the same sound effect when you pick them up."
The Art Book also further confirms this connection on the same page by mentioning her dance in the festival is based on her movements in the og game. "Pauline’s festival choreography includes movements where her arms and legs swing from side to side, resembling her movements in the original game."
Now, how would somebody interpret the previously mentioned Lady and Pauline being separate characters. It was either a mistake and not the original intent, or it was the original intent at one point but has been retconned since then. In the end Pauline does seem to be Lady from the original, Donkey Kong game.

Hello to whoever stumbles across this post, I am currently in search of VA's for the Mario cast for a Mario VRC series I am working on. If you are interested there is some criteria you will need to meet, and some stuff you need to know. First off the qualifications you need to meet in order to join in the first place. You need to at least have an oculus, the ability to voice act a character, and of course all newbies must be 18 or older to join. So if you are interested look up my group The Super Mario VRC Adventures RP on vrc and request to join it. From there I will send you a friend request and invite you when you're only online to interview you basically, as well as perform an audition for the character you wish to voice act. Don't expect to come in expecting a role such as Mario to be available, and that you can just do a Mario voice and call it a day. We already have several people voicing characters, these characters include Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, Larry, Roy, Ludwig, DK Snr, Wario, Main Yoshi, Main DK, Fawful, Iggy, and K Rool. As for avaliable roles you have Bowser, Main Toad, Morton, Wendy, Lemmy, Diddy, Boom Boom, E Gadd, Kamek, and King Boo. Note the available roles can end up changing sometime after this post is made, so be sure to check and see if that role is filled or not. Some character roles may not be listed on the group or here but they are characters I will end up using later on. Right now I am currently looking for someone to voice Bowser, Pauline, Kamek, and Toad. This is because I need VAs for these roles so we can start recording. I would like to mention here I am hoping to find someone who can do a movie Toad or 64 Toad voice over is current voice, since his current voice is somewhat grading. You will also need to make sure you will be able to show up for recording. Recording times will be anywhere between 7pm-10:30pm Central Time for recordings whenever possible. If you want to be part of it, this will be the recording times. Btw we could go past the 10:30pm time if need be. They won't be every week but whenever possible. With that being said some characters will be used more often than others, so make sure you pick one that you can handle. For example, will use Bowser far more often than we will use Waluigi, which should explain itself. Characters such as Toads, Goombas, Koopas, and humans anyone play and voice act whenever they aren't needed as their character. For example, say we need a Goomba to attack Mario for an episode while we don't need Roy in said episode. The Roy VA can stand in as a Goomba. Also, for further information simply read the rules and group info. Also, this project is for fun at least for now so there is currently nothing along the lines of payment.

Mario Timeline Part 2
Part 1
Time Skip At some point in time the Bros. and their family migrate out of the Mushroom Kingdom and into the Metro Kingdom. They live in the new and still under construction Big City which would eventually become New Donk City.
Before Super Era
Game & Watch: Mario's Bomb's Away Mario fights in an unnamed war, given Mario's stated age he's probably barely over 18 in this game. Due to the presence of palm trees this probably takes places in the Kong Archipelago.
Game & Watch: Mario Bros., Mario's Cement Factory, and Wrecking Crew Mario more than likely hopped job to job with Luigi before they landed on their main job. These games have no exact placement, so they could go in any order.
Game & Watch: Donkey Kong Circus Mario goes to a circus and watches Donkey Kong Senior perform an act. This probably where Mario met DK Snr. and would go on to befriend him, and buy him as a pet.(Yes pets are weird just look at Chain Chomps and Mona's pets).
Game & Watch: Donkey Kong Hockey Mario and Donkey Kong play hockey together. This is probably when DK Snr. is still living with Mario, so it probably takes place before Donkey Kong.
Donkey Kong Arcade Donkey Kong Senior decides to prank Mario and try to get a rise out of him by kidnapping Pauline. These events would later become a festival for the New Donkers, and even in a musical titled Donkey Kong played by DK III the grandson of DK Snr. Mario might be a carpenter in this game, though this might have been retconned because Miyamoto implies he was already a plumber in this game. Mario is still wearing his Classic Outfit.
Donkey Kong Junior Mario cages Donkey Kong Senior after what he did in the previous game. Donkey Kong Junior is trying to free his father, thus Mario takes on the role of the antagonist.
Donkey Kong III Sometime after Donkey Kong Junior, Donkey Kong Senior probably decides to head home. On his way home he comes across Stanley on one of the islands in the Kong Archipelago, and decides to mess with Stanley.
Mario Bros./Did Somebody Call A Plumber One day Mario and Luigi get a call to deal with pests in the sewers of Big Ape City. In the sewers they fight Sidesteppers, Shell Creepers/Koopa Troopas, and Fighter Flies. As they go deeper they fight Spinys, Goombas, and Piranha Plants. Eventually the Bros. turn up in the Mushroom Kingdom, and the events of the next game begins. Bowser probably having heard of the prophecy from Kamek and maybe even remembering the Bros. from the past, sent minions into the pipes to prevent the Bros. from returning to the Mushroom Kingdom. But said actions would only lead them right back to it.
