DJ Casper, the creator of the world-famous "Cha Cha Slide," has died at 58 years old.

The DJ lost his battle with cancer on Monday.

In May, Casper told ABC he never thought the "Cha Cha Slide" would be an international sensation.

"When I first did it, I did it as an aerobic exercise for my nephew at Bally's," Casper said. "From there, it just took off. Elroy Smith from WGCI grabbed ahold of it."

‘Cha Cha Slide’ creator DJ Casper dead at 58

The star from Chicago, born Willie Perry Jr, created the “Cha Cha Slide” — originally dubbed “Casper Slide Pt.1” — in 1998 for his nephew, a personal trainer who intended to use the line dance song in his fitness class.

DJ Casper sat down with ABC7 for his final television interview this May. He said he never expected the “Cha Cha Slide” to become such a hit.

“When I first did it, I did it as an aerobic exercise for my nephew at Bally’s,” Casper said. “From there, it just took off. Elroy Smith from WGCI grabbed ahold of it,” he continued.

His song isn’t only a favorite at weddings, it’s played at events all over the world. “I have one of the biggest songs that played at all stadiums: hockey, basketball, football, baseball; they played it at the Olympics,” Casper said.

“It was something that everybody could do.”

William Perry Jr. (May 31, 1965 – August 7, 2023) known as DJ Casper (known as Mr. C The Slide Man), was a DJ, hype man, and songwriter. Born and raised in Chicago, he was known as “Casper” due to frequently being clad in all-white attire on stage.

His first hit record, “Casper Slide Pt. 1”, known as “Cha Cha Slide” – was created by him for his nephew, who worked as a personal trainer at Bally Total Fitness. After the song grew in popularity as an aerobic exercise at fitness clubs and PE in schools, he created a second song in 2000, titled “Casper Slide Pt. 2”, which was picked up by Elroy Smith at Chicago’s radio station, WGCI-FM.

The song became a hit in Chicago when the city’s M.O.B. Records record label became involved as well, helping him create a whole compilation album with other Chicago-based artists to promote the dance. “Cha Cha Slide” was picked up by Universal Records.

He made an appearance as a DJ in a season 6 episode of Orange Is the New Black, in Crazy Eyes’ hallucination of the prisoners and guards line dancing to the Cha Cha Slide.

In January 2016, he was diagnosed with kidney cancer and neuroendocrine cancer. After unsuccessful surgery the same month, he began chemotherapy. In an interview in July 2018, he stated he was in remission. In 2019, he stated that he beat his liver and kidney cancers and said he was a changed man, stating “That was God’s way of just slowing me down just a little bit.” #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

Il ricco calendario, che affianca l’evento clou della Sartiglia dell’11 e 13 febbraio, è stato stilato in collaborazione con la Fondazione Oristano, la Pro Loco e la Consulta Giovani. Da sabato 3 sino a martedì 13 febbraio, la città si animerà pressoché quotidianamente con musiche, balli, spettacoli ed eventi. Il cartellone si apre sabato 3 febbraio con “Aspettando Sa Sartiglia” e la sfilata per le piazze e le vie del centro storico delle maschere dalla Croazia Didi s Kamešnice, del Gruppo folk Città di Oristano e dei Tamburini e Trombettieri della Pro loco e dei Gruppi Sa Sartiglia Città di Oristano, con la musica di Vanni Masala. - Domenica 4 febbraio in piazza S.
