How to Help Innocent Overpluck Brow Victims of the 90s
Eyebrow trends have evolved significantly over the decades, and we all have our own brow journeys. One trend that stands out is the era of overplucked brows, a fashion statement that dominated the beauty scene during the 1990s and early 2000s. For those who followed this trend, the quest for ultra-thin brows often led to excessive tweezing, waxing, and threading. Looking back, we may laugh at our youthful beauty experiments, but the effects of the overpluck can be long-lasting and challenging to reverse. Whether you’re looking to restore your brows to their former glory or simply curious about this nostalgic trend, this blog post will offer valuable insights and tips to help you navigate your brow journey.
The Trend of the Brow Overpluck
Time Period of the Overpluck Trend
The trend of overplucking eyebrows reached its peak during the 1990s and early 2000s. This era was marked by a fascination with ultra-thin, highly arched brows, a look that was in stark contrast to the fuller, more natural brows seen in previous decades. The shift towards minimalistic brows was influenced by fashion, music, and pop culture, which collectively embraced and promoted this distinct aesthetic.
Fashion and Beauty Standards
The beauty standards of the 1990s and early 2000s emphasized sleekness and minimalism, which extended to eyebrow grooming. The look was all about precision and creating a clean, sculpted appearance. Thin brows were seen as sophisticated and edgy, fitting perfectly with the decade’s grunge and later, the Y2K aesthetic.
Makeup tutorials and beauty magazines of the time provided tips and techniques for achieving the perfect thin brow. This often involved frequent tweezing, waxing, and even shaving to maintain the desired shape. Eyebrow stencils and brow pencils became essential tools for achieving symmetry and definition.
Influences of the Overpluck
Celebrities and cultural icons played a significant role in popularizing the overplucked brow trend. Stars like Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera, and Pamela Anderson were often seen sporting pencil-thin brows, which quickly became the epitome of style. These influential figures were frequently featured in magazines, music videos, and red carpet events, setting beauty standards that many tried to emulate. The fashion industry also embraced the trend, with runway models and editorial spreads showcasing thin, meticulously groomed brows.
The Popularity of DIY Grooming
The accessibility of tweezers and at-home waxing kits made it easy for people to groom their brows themselves. This DIY approach contributed to the widespread adoption of the overplucked brow look. Many individuals took to over-tweezing without fully understanding the long-term consequences, which often included thinning of the brows and potential damage to hair follicles.
Facts About the Overpluck
Scientific Insights
Scientific studies have shown that repeated trauma to hair follicles, such as that caused by overplucking, can lead to changes in the follicle’s structure and function. The anagen phase, or growth phase, of the hair cycle can become shorter, while the telogen phase, or resting phase, can become prolonged. This imbalance disrupts the natural growth cycle, making it difficult for brows to recover fully.
Impact on Hair Follicles
Overplucking can have a significant impact on hair follicles, potentially causing long-term damage. Each hair follicle contains a root from which the hair grows, and repeated plucking can weaken or damage these follicles. When a hair is plucked, it can disrupt the growth cycle, leading to thinner, weaker hairs that may grow back more slowly or not at all. In some cases, repeated trauma to the hair follicles can lead to permanent hair loss in the affected areas.
Long-Term Effects
The long-term effects of overplucking can include sparse, uneven, and patchy eyebrows. As hair follicles become damaged, the regrowth process slows down, and in some cases, hairs may stop growing altogether. This can result in permanent thinning of the eyebrows. Additionally, overplucking can cause the skin around the eyebrows to become more sensitive and prone to irritation. The constant pulling and tugging can lead to inflammation and even scarring, which further affects the appearance and health of the brows.
Aging and Hormonal Factors
Aging and hormonal changes can exacerbate the effects of overplucking. As we age, hair growth naturally slows down, and hair follicles become less productive. Hormonal fluctuations, such as those experienced during pregnancy, menopause, or due to certain medical conditions, can also impact hair growth. For those who overplucked their brows in their youth, these natural changes can make it even more challenging to regain fuller eyebrows later in life.
How to Regrow Brows After the Overpluck
Here are some effective strategies to help encourage eyebrow growth and restore their natural fullness:
Patience and Consistency
Regrowing eyebrows takes time. Hair growth cycles are slow, and it may take several months to see noticeable improvements. It’s important to remain patient and consistent with your care routine. Avoid the temptation to pluck or shape your brows during this period to allow the hair follicles to recover and grow freely. Consistency in applying growth-promoting products and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will support your journey to fuller brows.
Brow Serums and Oils
Using brow serums and oils can significantly promote hair growth by providing essential nutrients and creating a conducive environment for follicles. Look for these key ingredients in products:
Peptides: Peptides are short chains of amino acids that serve as the building blocks of proteins like keratin, essential for hair growth. They stimulate hair follicles to produce thicker, stronger hair and improve blood circulation to these follicles, enhancing nutrient delivery.
Biotin: Also known as vitamin B7, biotin plays a critical role in keratin production. It helps fortify the hair shaft, reducing breakage. A deficiency in biotin can lead to thinning hair, so supplementation can help promote healthier, thicker brows.
Castor Oil: Rich in ricinoleic acid, castor oil has anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. It nourishes hair follicles and enhances blood flow, promoting healthier and faster hair growth. The fatty acids in castor oil also provide deep moisturization, preventing dryness and breakage.
Vitamin E: As a powerful antioxidant, vitamin E protects hair follicles from damage caused by free radicals. It supports healthy hair growth by maintaining a healthy scalp and reducing oxidative stress. Vitamin E also enhances blood circulation, vital for nourishing hair follicles and promoting regrowth.
Hyaluronic Acid: Known for its exceptional hydrating properties, hyaluronic acid helps retain moisture in the skin and hair. By maintaining proper hydration, hyaluronic acid ensures that the environment around the hair follicles is conducive to healthy hair development.
Product Recommendation: RevitaBrow Advanced Eyebrow Conditioner Serum contains peptides, biotin, and other nutrients that support hair growth. It conditions and strengthens brows, leading to a fuller and thicker appearance.
Product Recommendation: Castor Oil is rich in fatty acids and vitamin E. Apply a small amount to your brows before bed using a clean spoolie brush.
Follicle Stimulation Techniques
Stimulating blood flow to the hair follicles can significantly promote eyebrow growth. Gently massaging your brows with your fingers or using a soft toothbrush can enhance circulation, delivering essential nutrients and oxygen to the hair follicles. Increased blood flow supports healthier, stronger hair growth by providing the necessary building blocks for new hair. This simple yet effective technique can be incorporated into your daily routine. For best results, consider using natural oils like castor or coconut oil during the massage, as these oils nourish the hair follicles and enhance the overall growth process. Consistent stimulation and nourishment can lead to fuller, healthier brows over time.
Product Recommendation: A gua sha tool can be used to gently massage the brow area, improving blood flow and promoting hair growth.
Avoid Harsh Chemicals
When regrowing your brows, it’s crucial to stay away from products that contain harsh chemicals or alcohol. These ingredients can irritate the skin, damage hair follicles, and hinder hair growth. Instead, opt for natural and gentle skincare products that nurture your brows and support their healthy regrowth. Here’s why you should avoid harsh chemicals in your regrowth phase:
Skin Irritation: Harsh chemicals, such as sulfates and parabens, can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to dryness and irritation. This can create an unhealthy environment for hair follicles, making it difficult for brow hairs to grow.
Damage to Hair Follicles: Strong chemicals can penetrate the skin and damage hair follicles, resulting in weaker hair growth or even preventing new hairs from emerging.
Long-term Effects: Continuous use of products with harsh chemicals can lead to chronic skin conditions, such as eczema or contact dermatitis. This prolonged irritation can severely impede the ability of your brows to regrow healthily.
Product Recommendation: Mineral Fusion Retractable Brow Pencil is made with natural ingredients, including castor oil and vitamin E, and can help you shape and fill in your brows without causing irritation.
Healthy Diet
A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is essential for hair growth. Nutrients like biotin, vitamin E, vitamin A, and omega-3 fatty acids play a crucial role in maintaining healthy hair.
Foods to Include:
Biotin: Eggs, almonds, sweet potatoes
Vitamin E: Spinach, avocados, sunflower seeds
Vitamin A: Carrots, sweet potatoes, kale
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Salmon, walnuts, chia seeds
Consider taking a hair, skin, and nails supplement if you find it challenging to get these nutrients through diet alone. Supplements can help ensure you are getting the necessary vitamins and minerals to support hair growth.
Hydration
Keeping your body and skin hydrated is essential for hair health. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day ensures your hair follicles receive the necessary nutrients and moisture to promote growth. Additionally, using a hydrating facial mist keeps your skin fresh and supports the overall health of your scalp and hair. Proper hydration helps maintain the elasticity and strength of your hair, reducing breakage and promoting a healthy shine.
Product Recommendation: Heritage Store Rosewater & Glycerin Hydrating Facial Mist provides hydration and helps maintain the skin’s moisture balance, supporting healthy hair growth.
Proper Grooming
While regrowing your brows, it’s important to avoid overplucking or excessive grooming. Keep your brows clean and moisturized to support healthy growth. Use a gentle cleanser and apply a moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated.
Product Recommendation: Applying a small amount of Vaseline to your brows can lock in moisture and create a protective barrier, helping to support healthy growth.
Professional Help
If your brows are severely overplucked and not showing signs of regrowth, consider consulting a dermatologist or a brow specialist. They can offer professional treatments and advice tailored to your needs.
Treatment Options:
Microblading: A semi-permanent technique where pigment is implanted into the skin to create the appearance of fuller brows.
PRP Therapy: Platelet-rich plasma therapy involves injecting your own platelets into the brow area to stimulate hair growth.
Fiction About the Overpluck
Myth 1: The Brow Overpluck Means Brows Will Never Grow Back
Reality: One of the most pervasive myths about overplucking is that once you’ve overplucked your eyebrows, they will never grow back. While it is true that overplucking can damage hair follicles and slow down the regrowth process, it doesn’t necessarily mean permanent loss. Many people have successfully regrown their brows with patience and the right care. The key is to stop overplucking and allow the hair growth cycle to resume naturally. Using growth-promoting products and maintaining a healthy diet can also aid in the regrowth process.
Myth 2: Shaving Brows Makes Them Grow Back Thicker
Reality: Another common myth is that shaving your eyebrows will cause them to grow back thicker and darker. This belief likely stems from the fact that when hair is cut at the surface (as with shaving), it can appear blunt and thicker as it grows back. However, shaving does not affect the hair follicle or the actual growth process. The hair will grow back with the same thickness and color as before. Shaving can also increase the risk of irritation and ingrown hairs, which can complicate the regrowth process.
Myth 3: Eyebrow Pencils and Powders Can Cause Hair Loss
Reality: Some people believe that using eyebrow makeup, such as pencils, powders, or gels, can lead to hair loss. In reality, these products are designed to be safe for use on the skin and hair. Proper application and gentle removal are key to avoiding irritation. It’s essential to remove makeup thoroughly at the end of the day to prevent product buildup and skin issues, but the use of eyebrow cosmetics does not inherently cause hair loss.
Myth 4: Plucking Gray Brow Hairs Causes More Gray Hairs to Grow
Reality: A common misconception is that plucking gray hairs will cause more gray hairs to grow in their place. The appearance of gray hairs is due to a reduction in melanin production within the hair follicle, which is influenced by genetics and aging, not by plucking. Pulling out gray hairs can damage the follicles and potentially lead to sparse areas, but it won’t affect the color of the new growth. It’s better to trim or use eyebrow dye to manage gray hairs without damaging the follicles.
Myth 5: Natural Oils Alone Can Fully Fix the Overpluck
Reality: While natural oils such as castor oil, coconut oil, and olive oil can help condition the hair and skin, and may promote healthier growth, they are not a magic cure for overplucked brows. These oils can provide nourishment and improve the overall condition of the hair and skin, but significant regrowth often requires a combination of proper care, patience, and sometimes, medical-grade treatments. Using growth serums with scientifically proven ingredients like peptides and vitamins can enhance the regrowth process more effectively.
Conclusion
Regrowing overplucked eyebrows is not an overnight process, but with patience, dedication, and the right approach, you can restore your brows. The journey to regrowth requires a combination of methods, including using effective brow serums and oils, maintaining a nutritious diet rich in essential vitamins and minerals, and practicing gentle grooming techniques.
Ultimately, the key to regrowing overplucked brows lies in patience and consistency. Embrace the journey and allow your brows the time they need to recover and flourish. By following the tips and recommendations outlined in this blog post, you can achieve the desired results and enjoy the confidence that comes with well-groomed, naturally full eyebrows.

AI-driven tool makes it easy to personalize 3D-printable models
With Style2Fab, makers can rapidly customize models of 3D-printable objects, such as assistive devices, without hampering their functionality.
Adam Zewe | MIT News
As 3D printers have become cheaper and more widely accessible, a rapidly growing community of novice makers are fabricating their own objects. To do this, many of these amateur artisans access free, open-source repositories of user-generated 3D models that they download and fabricate on their 3D printer.
But adding custom design elements to these models poses a steep challenge for many makers, since it requires the use of complex and expensive computer-aided design (CAD) software, and is especially difficult if the original representation of the model is not available online. Plus, even if a user is able to add personalized elements to an object, ensuring those customizations don’t hurt the object’s functionality requires an additional level of domain expertise that many novice makers lack.
To help makers overcome these challenges, MIT researchers developed a generative-AI-driven tool that enables the user to add custom design elements to 3D models without compromising the functionality of the fabricated objects. A designer could utilize this tool, called Style2Fab, to personalize 3D models of objects using only natural language prompts to describe their desired design. The user could then fabricate the objects with a 3D printer.
“For someone with less experience, the essential problem they faced has been: Now that they have downloaded a model, as soon as they want to make any changes to it, they are at a loss and don’t know what to do. Style2Fab would make it very easy to stylize and print a 3D model, but also experiment and learn while doing it,” says Faraz Faruqi, a computer science graduate student and lead author of a paper introducing Style2Fab.
Style2Fab is driven by deep-learning algorithms that automatically partition the model into aesthetic and functional segments, streamlining the design process.
In addition to empowering novice designers and making 3D printing more accessible, Style2Fab could also be utilized in the emerging area of medical making. Research has shown that considering both the aesthetic and functional features of an assistive device increases the likelihood a patient will use it, but clinicians and patients may not have the expertise to personalize 3D-printable models.
With Style2Fab, a user could customize the appearance of a thumb splint so it blends in with her clothing without altering the functionality of the medical device, for instance. Providing a user-friendly tool for the growing area of DIY assistive technology was a major motivation for this work, adds Faruqi.
He wrote the paper with his advisor, co-senior author Stefanie Mueller, an associate professor in the MIT departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering, and a member of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) who leads the HCI Engineering Group; co-senior author Megan Hofmann, assistant professor at the Khoury College of Computer Sciences at Northeastern University; as well as other members and former members of the group. The research will be presented at the ACM Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology.

WAX AND WANE EXHIBITION AT ERRANT SOUND
2023.04.27-29 Wax & Wane KARIN WEISSENBRUNNER / JD ZAZIE SANDRA E. BLATTERER Errant Sound Berlin - DE
Exhibition at Errant Sound JD Zazie & Karin Weissenbrunner – beeswax records, turntables Sandra E. Blatterer – light design
27.4. 19h Vernissage & Performance
Exhibition Fr. & Sat, 28. & 29.4. 15-20h 29.4. 16h Workshop
Wax & Wane explores the sculptural and sonic link between local culture and urban nature by using custom-made records from regional beeswax. Karin Weissenbrunner and JD Zazie’s duo project unites the honeybees’ ›voices‹ as equal co-creators with their own wax, while recycling recordings of Berlin’s sound archives through the wax material. The key focus is to fully embrace the organic material with varying qualities in color, smell, or consistency specific to its origin environment – and to render these material features into a sonic experience. For these unique records, the sound artists collaborated mainly with city beekeepers from the Mellifera society, who keep honeybees ‘organically’ on rooftops or in gardens and cemeteries, and Berlin related sound archives, such as the Lautarchiv der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the Tierstimmenarchiv of Museum für Naturkunde and radio aporee. The project aims to situate turntable practices in the current context of environmental concerns and, in particular, to draw attention to the decline of insect populations – one of the less noticeable consequences of human intervention in natural systems.
Valeria Merlini (aka JD Zazie) and Karin Weissenbrunner are both based in Berlin. Avant-garde turntablist, experimental DJ, sound artist and curator Valeria Merlini completed the Master Sound Studies at the UdK Berlin after graduating in architecture in Florence. In her compositions she focuses on experimental electronic music, constantly expanding the conventions of turntablism, musique concrète, free improvisation and composed music. She is co-founder of Studio Urban Resonance, member of the label Burb Enterprise and of Reanimation Orchestra, and the artistic director of the festival »MuseRuole – Women in Experimental Music in Bolzano«. Karin Weissenbrunner has a doctorate in music from City, University of London. She follows her interests in sound art, broken media, DIY, materiality, post-human concepts and unusual instruments as a curator of concert series and festivals. She is also active as an experimental turntablist in the duo Sage Thrashers with Stefanie Loveday that explores the conjunctions of synthesized and concrete sounds of otherness and propels them into spheres of mimetic transformations constructing soundscapes until the dissolution into noise.

frankieromustdie: i found this shirt in my attic... it’s from one of my high school bands, Sector 12. The band was named after where Homer Simpson worked in the nuclear power plant, Sector 7g... however, that name was either already taken or deemed not cool enough so we changed it to 12, which is super clever and meaning(less)ful. 🤦♂️ I made this shirt at a Kinkos by photocopying cutout letters and an old denim patch with some safety pins (the main ingredients in any punk rock DIY stew) and then screen printed these shirts in my mom’s basement in Belleville, NJ. Oh and if by some miracle you couldn’t discern how punk we were or that we lived in NJ, we also wrote it on the bottom of the shirt for your convenience. at the age of 13, maybe 14 i wrote a song for Sector 12 called “Gwen Stefani Must Die”. (No Doubt was enormous at the time and because of their popularity and catchy hooks Gwen was thought to be not punk enough to live in a world inhabited by us, the teenage gatekeepers of Punk Rock. 🤦♂️ Turns out i just had a crush on her and wanted to impress my friends by not liking popular music.) I now post this flashback of my adolescence at the ripe old age of 38 from my FrankIeroMustDie instagram account... #SomeThingsChange #OthersNotSoMuch

goodboy noah Is Keeping Things Retro With Sophomore EP ‘Cool’ [Q&A]
Photo: Stefanie Moser
Only six months after the release of his debut EP Nice, R&B/neo-soul singer goodboy noah is back with the release of his sophomore EP, Cool. The Toronto native, LA-based artist known for his tongue-in-cheek and earworm melodies has gifted us with a perfect collection of tracks just in time for the holidays.
Singles “Backseat,” “Hit N’ Run,” “Attitude,” and “Buggin,” were released prior to today and the final tracks “Treasure” and “Long Night” wrap up the six track EP, beautifully. We sat down with goodboy noah to talk about not only his EP but also his first festival announcement, music influences, and DIY music videos.
youtube
Ones to Watch: Congrats on the release of your sophomore EP! I’m a fan (obviously) but for those who are new here, how would you describe your music and sound without using any genres?
goodboy noah: Thanks! Hmmm, I guess the words I’d use to describe it are fun, organic, bouncy, cheeky, smooth, and soulful.
If you had to choose, what’s your favorite track off the EP and why?
I think my favorite song is probably “Attitude,” just because it reminds me of the 2000’s R&B I would listen to growing up. I love the guitar and bassline, and we wrote and recorded the song during a writing camp. It’s one of those songs that was made quickly and easily.
Did the writing process change at all from your debut EP Nice to Cool?
It changed a lot, just because of COVID. Nice was written during the second half of 2020, so a lot of the collaborative writing process was virtual, and a lot of the recording I would do on my own in my bedroom. With Cool, I was able to do a lot of that in person with my friends Micah Gordon and Dan Henig, since we worked on that this year. Also, I think we discovered more of the sound I want to have moving forward with this EP. And making it together in the same room definitely helped with that. Everything seems more real and organic to me.
I love the retro vibe you’ve carried throughout your previous EP and this one. Is that going to continue as goodboy noah’s statement style or are you planning on switching things up on us?
I definitely love the retro sound. I think it just happens naturally with me because of my main R&B influences growing up. I love bouncy R&B with real instruments and stacked vocals, which people automatically associate with the 2000’s. I think I want to lean into that even more going forward. Use more real instruments and drum samples, so that everything sounds timeless.
Who or what influenced you while working on Cool?
I get a lot of influence from the artists I listened to growing up, like I mentioned before. That was a lot of Usher, Lauryn Hill, Ne-yo, Mary J. Blige, Nate Dogg, etc. So it always comes from them mixed with the artists I’m listening to currently like Silk Sonic, Ari Lennox, Kehlani, Free Nationals, and Remi Wolf.
Your music videos are my favorite, they feel very DIY yet professional. Can you walk us through what the process looks like? How involved are you in creating them?
Oh, they are extremely DIY haha. I’m lucky to have friends and collaborators with great camera gear, so we can go out and shoot what we want. I come up with the concepts for the videos with Dan and the rest of my team, and we just go out and shoot them. We do most of the editing ourselves too. I definitely like to lean into the silly, quirky stuff in the videos. My favorite video from the EP is probably “Hit N’ Run.” The mermaid absolutely stole the show in my opinion.
youtube
If you could tour with anyone, who would it be?
Off the top of my head I’d say Teddy Swims, Ari Lennox, and Kehlani. I think their music is unbelievable, and they also seem like a fun time.
What song are you most excited to perform live?
I can wait to perform “Treasure,” which is off the new EP. The first verse has this kind of lazy rapping section that I’ve never done live, so I’m excited to try that out.
You announced your first ever festival spot for Treefort Music Fest in March, how does that feel?
I’m really excited for that! I’ve never played a festival or been to Idaho, so I can’t wait. Gonna be great to perform and meet everyone who comes out and to see the other acts.
What’s next for goodboy noah?
I’m just gonna keep it moving with more music starting back up in 2022. You can expect a lottt more music, and I think it’s getting better and better. Also, I have some exciting features and collabs for next year, so I can't wait.

To my mother
Its hard to live without your love, but I've been learning to go on without it. It should feel like the deepest betrayal; when a mother rejects her child.
But I don't blame you.
I understand where others don't that it's simply how you were made. You can't teach the wolf to love the sheep, and like a snowstorm in Texas; you and I simply don't fit. This time, the apple fell far, far away from the tree.
Now, you've said a lot of things to me that hurt; that I'm disgusting, preverse, going to hell, and worse. But I know they come from a dark, mishappened place that has nothing to do with me. And even though I didnt turn out the way you wanted, like a DIY project gone wrong, you still built me strong. But it's a funny thing; you taught me to be resilient, independent, and to build my soul a house of stone. Who could of thought that it would be you to hurt me the most.
I can live without your love because I have love around me. I have the adoration of a beautiful girlfriend. I have the protection of caring friends. And I have the support of family. And for me, this is all I will ever need.

DIY Platinum Blonde
There I was, a boring old brown head, browsing the interwebz while drooling over Lady Gaga and Gwen Stefani. I couldn’t get over how stunning, elegant, and full of attitude these ladies looked with their platinum blonde hair. It got me pondering the possibility of going platinum myself. Having gone blonde (professionally) once in the past I was expecting to pay roughly $160-180 before tip. That estimate was based solely on what I had paid previously. To my surprise, I was quoted $250-$300 before tip.
Don’t get me wrong, this particular hair stylist goddess is amazing and if you have that kind of money to spend she is worth every.damn.penny. My dilemma being- I’m a broke ass, post-grad, unemployed, piece of shit. Ok, ok, so I freelance as often as I possibly can to pay the bills and have made finding a decent job/decent career move my full-time job...so I’m not a complete piece of shit. I just don’t have a spare $300+ lying around. But, I digress.
This predicament got the ol’ hamster wheel a turnin’ and I thought “Why not do it myself?”. And, by “do it myself”, I meant none of that angsty teen I’m going to Hot Topic to buy ‘Raw “White Out kit”’ bullshit (trust me, I’ve been there). I wanted to do it right! I spent days watching YouTube videos and reading blogs learning not just how to successfully bleach your hair but the science behind it. I learned all about hair levels, developers, toners, dyes, techniques, and supplies. Once I felt confident enough in my newfound knowledge I took a trip to Sally’s Beauty where I bought:
Clairol Soy 4Plex 40 Developer (two 16 oz bottles)
L’Oreal Quick Blue Bleach (1 lb tub)
Wella T18 Lightest Ash Blonde Toner
Wella 20 Developer (3.6 oz bottle)
Ion Absolute Perfection Duel Kit (Booster & Color Sealer)
Nature’s Gate Repair Shampoo & Conditioner
Coconut Oil Deep Repair Masque by Hair Chemist
Two mixing bowls
Two tint brushes
4-Pack of alligator clips
Pack of disposable shower caps
A hair cape
Below is the process I undertook step-by-step: *Please note that I am NOT a professional and these steps are based on what I learned via the internet + trial and error*
Step 1 - Bleach hair for the first time. During my “Day 1″ I:
Separated my hair into 4 different sections
Combined 1 part bleach with 2 parts developer as well as the Ion Booster (to fully saturate my hair it took 10 oz of developer/5 scoops of bleach)
Applied bleach to ends/body of hair leaving the roots for last (unfortunately I didn’t bleach far enough up on my hair before the roots which left a nice little brass ring-- thankfully I later corrected that)
Left bleach in hair for 30 minutes before applying bleach to my roots (roots develop quicker due to the heat coming off your head)
Applied bleach to my roots, capped it, and left it in for 15 minutes (in retrospect I have learned that I only need to leave the bleach on my roots for up to 10 minutes or until I visibly see them reach my desired level of color)
When the time was up I rinsed the bleach out of my hair and washed it with my repair shampoo (I later learned/did something better than wash it right away)
After washing my hair I put in the Coconut Repair Masque and left it in for two hours
Step 2 - Take care of your hair for the next week and a half For the next week and a half I babied my hair.
I waited two days after bleaching it to wash it again as I wanted my natural oils to come back
I did another hour long coconut repair masque treatment about a week after bleaching my hair
I also used Hydrating Styling Cream (argan oil) by Moroccanoil or Renewing Moroccan Argan Penetrating Oil by Organix
Step 3 - Bleach hair again This time around I called on my boyfriend for a helping second set of hands. I’m actually proud of how this came out. The horrid brassy ring was gone and my hair was even for the most part-- minus the slight orange tint.
First I sectioned my hair into 3 parts (two parts on top with one part behind/below. Sorry I don’t have a picture of how I parted my hair)
I then had my boyfriend apply the bleach ONLY to the brassy ring/band of hair
Once that small section of hair was covered I let it sit until it visibly looked like it matched the rest of my hair
That’s when I applied the bleach to my ends/body of hair and left my roots for last
This time I let the bleach sit for an hour
After an hour was up I had my boyfriend help cover my roots in bleach
I sat and watched my roots change and once they looked about even with the rest of my hair I rinsed the bleach out
After rinsing the bleach out I used the Ion Color Sealer (just followed the directions)
Then I rinsed out the color sealer, washed my hair with my repair shampoo, and left the coconut repair masque in for an hour
Step 4 - Toner! This was my first time ever using toner so I had NO IDEA what to expect. Unlike bleaching your hair, I couldn’t find as much information on the internet. So, I took what I knew about ends/roots and applied it to toning as well.
Washed hair and towel dried it (yes, you apply this to wet/damp hair-- I was surprised too!)
Sectioned my hair into 4 parts just like I did when I first bleached my hair
Mixed the whole T18 bottle into 2 parts 20 developer
Applied toner to ends/body of hair first then applied to roots last but immediately after ends/body (this time I did it all together because I knew it didn’t need to sit long)
Watched my hair like a hawk to make sure I didn’t go too ashy (as the toner develops it turns purple in your hair which can make it hard to determine the actual color of your hair without washing it out)
Left the toner in for 5 minutes only (the box says you can leave the toner in up to 30 minutes so take heed)
Rinsed toner out
Used the coconut repair masque for 30+ minutes
The results are amazing! My roots are definitely a bit ashy for my liking but after a trip to Sally’s to pick their brain I was assured the purple I was seeing would start to golden up after a few days. Thus, there is no need to use an orange based toner to even it out. I picked up some purple shampoo and conditioner to help maintain my tone and away I went! I am really impressed with the products I used as this is the first time I didn’t have huge fried clumps of hair in my palm at the end of either bleaching session. *Note: My self facing camera makes my hair look a bit lighter than it is. You can see the actual color better in the “back” photo. Also note, I know it isn’t “perfect” but it’s damn near enough for my liking. :D
I somehow successfully raised my hair 9 levels. :O
I’m fucking BLONDE bitchessssssss!

Caustic Casanova Hits Hard With Feisty New Single
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
Malfunkshun recorded a song some 30 years ago called "With Yo' Heart (Not Yo' Hands)." To me, the title alone says volumes about the place of authenticity in music making. You can be technically proficient, you and paint by the numbers, follow the formula, but it won't resonate with listeners unless it's coming from a place deep inside you. That's how a band like CAUSTIC CASANOVA distinguishes itself when I've audited so many albums that I'm almost sick to death of hearing anything with a beat. And yet, still these tired ears can be lulled into asking, "Whose song is this, anyway?" Above all else, be interesting.
The band from D.C. has plenty of heart and ideas to spare, making the decision of which song to premiere really hard when their PR guy asks me to choose the one I liked best. "Boxed and Crated," the album-ending track from God How I Envy The Deaf, eventually won out. Says the band of this particular number:
"'Boxed and Crated' is one of our most unusual songs. For a while we'd been closing sets with our cover of The Melvins' 'Cow' from our Pantheon: Vol. 2 record. I wanted to add an original tune to our repertoire that could replace "Cow" as a set closer but with similar components, like a hellacious heavy metal start, an open-ended noise ending that could lend itself to improvisation and experimentation, and a Melvins-esque, focused sense of silliness. What was conceived as a short tune ended up, in classic CC fashion, becoming an album-ending and set-closing noise-prog epic.
"This song's got it all. Lyrics pulled directly from The Drew Carey Show, Spanish language verses, an epic guitar solo, layered percussion, sonic references to "Escape" by Rupert Holmes, and of course guitarist Andrew Yonki animatedly reading Lovecraft, slowed down so it becomes a molten lava sound effect, closing out the track as we slow a simple drone down to the doomiest of tempos.
"The lyrics are also a complete farce, in an intentional way. They're intended to mirror and also distort the words on the album's opener, 'Fancy English.' The record starts with a question, "where is hatred bred?" and ends with comical and ridiculous lyrical repetitions of the word "hate." It's repeated so much that the listener should become numb to the word. One of the main premises of social media is to keep users upset and full of hatred long enough to sell them products. They're made to feel that arguing with and insulting others is energy and time well spent, so that serious discussion devolves into blind and deaf rage, and then they're shown products to make them feel better. It's a sick joke. 'Boxed and Crated' is the album's final descent from coherence into madness and then finally into the grave, lyrically and musically. Enjoy!"
This one gets wild, too, people, watch out. Just wait until you hear that guitar solo! Look for God How I Envy The Deaf on October 18th on digital, CD, and vinyl formats via Magnetic Eye Records (pre-order here).
Give ear...
God How I Envy The Deaf by Caustic Casanova
Some Buzz
Relentless road-dogs CAUSTIC CASANOVA will release their new album, God How I Envy The Deaf, this October via Magnetic Eye Records. The record lands after a nearly two-month cross-country tour and only weeks prior to another trek in support of the confident collection of singable riff-punk anthems, establishing yet again that this band won't be held to any sort of predictable musical path nor many nights sleeping in their own beds.
Since forming as teenagers at the College of William & Mary in 2005, Caustic Casanova have weathered lineup changes and life-threatening injuries while maintaining an aggressive DIY touring ethic, and their eclectic sound has made them a favorite in a crowded scene.
Following drummer/vocalist Stefanie Zaenker's recovery from wrist injuries that nearly ended her ability to play, the band the band released the critically acclaimed LP Breaks in 2015 on Kylesa's Retro Futurist Records, as well as a trio of EPs between 2013 and 2018 that paired original songs with classics from Pentagram, the Melvins and Weedeater. This hard work led to nominations for multiple Washington Area Music Awards in 2019, as well as a deal with Magnetic Eye Records to release the much-anticipated new album.
Looking to the future, the band (Zaenker, along with bassist/vocalist Francis Beringer, guitarist Jake Kimberley and guitarist Andrew Yonki) have already begun work on material for their next album. First, though, the road-hardened unit will be showcasing the genre-mashing twists and alchemies of God How I Envy the Deaf across the world, including a slot at Magnetic Eye's upcoming Day of Doom label showcase this November, with lots more live dates to come.
