Born sixty years ago today: striking jolie-laide Spanish actress, former punk musician (her 1980s band was called Peor Impossible (“the worst possible”)), cutting edge fashion muse (she’s modeled for Jean-Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler and Alexander McQueen) and ultimate Madrileña – the glorious Rossy de Palma (née Rosa Elena García Echave, 16 September 1964)! With her unforgettable asymmetrical Picasso-esque face, de Palma is a vivid presence in the cinema of flamboyant Spanish auteur Pedro Almodovar (they’ve collaborated on eight films together to date, starting with Law of Desire in 1987. She’s also worked with the likes of Robert Altman, Lina Wertmuller and Terry Gilliam). Que maravillosa! Feliz cumpleaños!

“Catherine Deneuve has been compared to Greta Garbo because of her extraordinary beauty and her ability to act as a reflecting pool for the audience’s emotions. Like Garbo at the end of Queen Christina, Deneuve often does more simply by allowing herself to be a cypher than most other actresses can express by “acting.” This quality has made her one of the most popular modern French actresses and a leading international star in American, English and Spanish films as well. Her screen persona is one of icy sensuality, a beautiful and seemingly innocent girl driven by an intense sexuality which sometimes frightens and repels her. She often portrays call girls or mistresses, and sex is almost always the focal point of her relationships …”

Interviewer: “But supposing you could have a penis just for a day, Camille. What would you do with it?” Camille Paglia: “You don’t want me to answer that question! I would go find Catherine Deneuve in a hurry!”
/ From the 1994 compilation of Camille Paglia essays Vamps & Tramps /
Born on this day 81 years ago (22 October 1943): alluring and inscrutable reine du cinéma français Catherine Deneuve. Her commitment to European art films has never wavered: Deneuve is still challenging herself and taking artistic risks right up to the present day. No wonder Martin Scorsese argues “Catherine Deneuve is French cinema. They are inseparable, and one and the same.” Pictured: portrait of Deneuve by Helmut Newton for the April 1989 edition of Vanity Fair.
