hey just an FYI, disney's new animated movie strange world, which they're saying has their first gay character, is not like, a joke. i just saw it and it's an ACTUAL first gay character. he's the protagonist. him being gay is not his entire character but it's also not like, a cameo, or a background thing, or one scene you can cut out. it's a multi-generational story about this kid and his father and grandpa, and him being gay comes up in adorable ways throughout the story (to the point where this movie is gay enough to immediately be banned in several countries). it's really well done and a very pleasant surprise from the mouse and people should go watch it!

i know this is just one post on tumblr but i am BEGGING people who can to be loud about strange world.
it is so fucking unfair for disney to not properly promote this movie at all and for it to bomb so badly in theaters like it’s doing just because it actually had genuinely good poc and queer rep! i am SEETHING about how they intentionally set it up to fail and i can’t imagine how the people who worked on the movie feel!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
please be loud about it! please go see it if you can, tell your friends to see it, post about it on social media, get it trending, get as many people to see it as possible!
let the idiots at the top know we WANT better representation in movies!

I find it so refreshing that we are in this rare stage in western animation where disney is actually not monopolizing all the attention. If anything, 2022 has been one of their worse years yet in the animation department. Everything they have done has been completely eclipsed by other studios for once. Their Pinocchio "movie" was just obliterated by Guillermo del Toro's version. Strange World was completely forgotten because of poor marketing choices, allowing Dreamworks to come back with the Bad Guys and Puss in Boots, the first being very good and the second absolutely excellent (I'm being serious, this movie is SO MUCH MORE than a simple Shrek spin-off).
TMNT even got its time to shine with probably the best 2D animated film this year (in a technical aspect at least), rekindling an interest for the entire franchise (with another TMNT movie by Seth Rogen in production!!)
The Sea Beast was amazing. Wendell & Wild was a masterclass. 2022 has just been excellent throughout, and it's Disney that happens to be the weakest at the moment. Even the Minions 2 got more attention than most things that came out on Disney + Animation this year (not saying that the movie was great or anything, but it's saying a lot)
And when we look at the next Pixar movie coming out next year, the hype pales in comparison to the Mario movie, and let's not even TALK about Across the Spiderverse......everybody knows it's going to snatch everyone's wig, and all the awards under the sun to match it.
So yeah, western animation gets to breathe a little, and it feels amazing.

Disney after making a visually stunning and stunningly creative sci-fi time-period-mishmash adventure movie about cool space travel and daddy issues that is heavily inspired by classic works with a relatable teenage boy protagonist, badass female captain, and silly little marketable shapeshifting splat, and then proceeding to release it immediately after a huge franchise’s long-awaited and incredibly hyped-up blockbuster release, giving this movie absolutely no promotion or hype whatsoever or even so much as a fucking McDonalds action figure because they desperately want this movie to die because they don’t like the experimentalism and queerness and want to write it off as a bad movie instead of their own refusal to accept different kinds of storytelling and emerging social issues:

remember when everybody bought tickets for Morbius as a joke and fooled them into thinking everyone liked the movie? know how the current inside joke is everyone collectively pretending an old movie exists that actually doesn’t exist but creating so much art and tumblr posts about it that they’ve managed to gaslight a big part of the internet into thinking it’s real? I know this is what everyone’s capable of so why don’t we keep up this energy for Strange World which actually exists and actually needs the advertising

Disney: Yeah, sorryy, we don't know how to make villains without queercoding them and people didn't like the twist-villains, so we stopped making them alltogether :( I hope you like 3593 intergenerational family-traumas!
Dreamworks, while creating not one, not two, but three amazing villains: Pathetic

Reasons to watch Disney's Strange World:
it's a lot of fun
features a gay protagonist. No seriously. This mainline Disney animated movie has an actual, visibly and explicitly gay main character. He's even got a boyfriend! That we get to see on-screen! (well okay he's more of a crush but it's made clear they're into each other)
the mascot character is basically a squishy stress ball so you get all your sensory/stim needs covered
apparently they're doing very little to advertise it compared to their more "traditional" movies and I don't want it to go the way of Atlantis and Treasure Planet

reminder as strange world hits theaters: stories like this and the owl house? that’s not disney. that’s the creators who fought tooth and nail to tell their stories and have their viewers reflected on screen.
disney fights against them and we will see that in the coming weeks as strange world gets censored and has hate directed at it for portraying humans as the one thing humans tend to hate:
being human.

i love fandoms that are old/dead because then you have years to decades of dormant accounts and official promos to pore through looking for priceless artifacts and relics to take back to your trove, leaving your respects for creators and usernames long since forgotten
i love fandoms that are tiny and you and the twelve other ppl enjoying it with you are mostly on the same wavelength, or trying to be so no one gets pushed out of the group bc you need each other to keep the joy alive
i love fandoms that are too big for everyone to be familiar with the same things. the fictional universe is so expansive that you can wave at another fan online, but have no clue who their blorbo is or what part of the franchise they're from

Totally not a fascist response to classroom full of kids (with permission slips!) watching a PG Disney film where literally one minute of screen time is dedicated to a boy saying he likes another boy.

A teacher in Florida is being investigated by the state for ‘indoctrination’ after showing a Disney film which features a prominent gay character. The investigation comes after fifth grade teacher Jenna Barbee showed her class Disney’s 2022 animated movie Strange World as a “brain break”, following a morning of standardized testing. The film features Ethan, an openly gay character, and a romantic plot between Ethan and his crush, Diazo. On TikTok, the teacher said she chose to show the film because it fit in with the class’s curriculum, as they are currently learning about ecosystems. The LGBTQ+ element was not the reason she put the movie on, but described it as “harmless”. Barbee claims she was reported to the state by a school board member, who she says is on a “rampage” against any form of representation in schools and her daughter was in the classroom watching Strange World. A tweet by Barbee’s friend, Carl Zee, shows a letter from the Florida Department of Education which states the teacher is being investigated for “inappropriate conduct”. “If you have evidentiary witnesses or documents pertinent to the case, send them to this office no later than two weeks from receipt of this letter,” the letter states. “[The students] didn’t even know this was a big deal until the board member and the state made it a big deal. “They’re using it against me saying they’re ‘protecting the children’ and it’s for their safety. But what is this actually showing them?” Barbee questioned in the video. She said the investigation is more “traumatising” for the youngsters than the film was in the fist place. “But the minor representations, that have nothing to do with the movie, are such a big deal that now admin in is in their room, pulling their teacher out, calling the students one by one down to the office to interrogate them in the middle of my lessons,” she said. The teacher added that a number of her students had told her they are members of the LGBTQ+ community, prior to the film being shown.
