Writer Spotlight: Jamie Beck
Jamie Beck is a photographer residing in Provence, France. Her Tumblr blog, From Me To You, became immensely successful shortly after launching in 2009. Soon after, Jamie, along with her partner Kevin Burg, pioneered the use of Cinemagraphs in creative storytelling for brands. Since then, she has produced marketing and advertising campaigns for companies like Google, Samsung, Netflix, Disney, Microsoft, Nike, Volvo, and MTV, and was included in Adweek Magazine’s “Creative 100” among the industry’s top Visual Artists. In 2022, she released her first book, An American in Provence, which became a NYT Bestseller and Amazon #1 book in multiple categories, and featured in publications such as Vogue, goop, Who What Wear, and Forbes. Flowers of Provence is Jamie’s second book.
Can you tell us about how The Flowers of Provence came to be?
I refer to Provence often as ‘The Garden of Eden’ for her harmonious seasons that bring an ever-changing floral bounty through the landscape. My greatest joy in life is telling her story of flowers through photography so that we may all enjoy them, their beauty, their symbolism, and their contribution to the harmony of this land just a bit longer.
(Photograph: Jamie Beck)
How do your photography and writing work together? Do you write as part of your practice?
I constantly write small notations, which usually occur when I am alone in nature with the intention of creating a photograph or in my studio working alone on a still life. I write as I think in my head, so I have made it a very strict practice that when a thought or idea comes up, I stop and quickly write the text in the notes app on my phone or in a pocket journal I keep with me most of the time. If I don’t stop and write it down at that moment, I find it is gone forever. It is also the same practice for shooting flowers, especially in a place as seasonal as Provence. If I see something, I must capture it right away because it could be gone tomorrow.
(Photograph: Jamie Beck)
You got your start in commercial photography. What’s something you learned in those fields that has served you well in your current creative direction?
I think my understanding of bridging art and commerce came from my commercial photography background. I can make beautiful photographs of flowers all day long, but how to make a living off your art is a completely different skill that I am fortunate enough to have learned by working with so many different creative brands and products in the past.
(Photograph: Jamie Beck)
Do you remember your first photograph?
Absolutely! I was 13 years old. My mother gave me her old Pentax 35mm film camera to play with. When I looked through the viewfinder, it was as if the imaginary world in my head could finally come to life! I gave my best friend a makeover, put her in an evening gown in the backyard of my parents’ house in Texas, and made my first photograph, which I thought was so glamorous! So Vogue!
You situate your photographic work with an introduction that charts the seasons in Provence through flowers. Are there any authors from the fields of nature writing and writing place that inspire you?
I absolutely adore Monty Don! His writing, his shoes, and his ease with nature and flowers—that’s a world in which I want to live. I also love Floret Flowers, especially on social media, as a way to learn the science behind flowers and how to grow them.
How did you decide on the order of the images within The Flowers of Provence?
Something I didn’t anticipate with a book deal is that I would actually be the one doing the layouts! I assumed I would hand over a folder of images, and an art director would decide the order. At first, it was overwhelming to sort through it all because the work is so personal, and I’m so visual. But in the end, it had to be me. It had to be my story and flow to be truly authentic. I tried to move through the seasons and colors of the landscape in a harmonious way that felt a bit magical, just as discovering Provence has felt to me.
(Photograph: Jamie Beck)
How do you practice self-care when juggling work and life commitments alongside the creative process?
The creative process is typically a result that comes out of taking time for self-care. I get some of my best ideas for photographic projects or writing when I am in a bath or shower or go for a long (and restorative) walk in nature. Doing things for myself, such as how I dress or do my hair and makeup, is another form of creative expression that is satisfying.
What’s a place or motif you’d like to photograph that you haven’t had a chance to yet?
I am really interested in discovering more formal gardens in France. I like the idea of garden portraiture, trying to really capture the essence and spirit of places where man and nature intertwine.
Which artists do you return to for inspiration?
I’m absolutely obsessed with Édouard Manethis color pallet and subject matter.
What are three things you can’t live without as an artist?
My camera, the French light, and flowers, of course.
What’s your favorite flower to photograph, and why?
I love roses. They remind me of my grandmother, who always grew roses and was my first teacher of nature. The perfume of roses and the vast variety of colors, names, and styles all make me totally crazy. I just love them. They simply bring me joy the same way seeing a rainbow in the sky does.

Smite The Wicked/Into The Sunlight
Author's Note: This one shot is based on Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. This is almost 7 pages long on my Google Doc, lol. I do have a fan art WIP of this scene, be on the lookout for that soon. This is also available on Wattpad and FFN. I do not own Planet of the Apes, or The Hunchback of Notre Dame.
Noa burst through the door, smiling widely and feeling ecstatic, “We did it! We beat them back, Mae! Come, come, come and see.” He was about to leave to see the victories again, and briefly turned his head to look over his shoulder. Mae was lying unconscious on a bed, in a small dark room and she wasn’t moving. Noa went down on all fours and hopped over to check on her. “Mae, you are safe…now,” he said, nudging her arm carefully. The female human still did not move. Noa placed his hand on her forehead, and then stroked her temple with the backs of his fingers. She felt cold to the touch, like from being outside too long in the winter or during a rainstorm in the spring and summer.
“Mae?” he asked softly, and then his golden jade eyes widened slightly, “oh no.”
The young chimp grabbed his canteen of water nestled along his hip, cradled the human’s head in his other hand, and brought it to her lips. The water dripped down the sides of her mouth and cheeks. Noa’s eyes widened this time in fear and shock. He dropped his canteen, not caring about it spilling onto the floor and soaking into his fur. “Oh n-no…,” he whispered, taking hold of her small hand in his, squeezing it as gently as he could.
He felt tears well up in his eyes, as he gently wrapped the human female in his arms. Burying his face in her neck, he let out soft sobs, his shoulders bobbing as he tried to hold back from sobbing and hooting too loudly.
Behind him in the doorway, Anaya, Soona and his mother Dar glanced in when he entered to tell Mae the news. They saw Noa bring his canteen up to Mae’s lips for some water, only for her not to take it at all. The three apes glanced at each other in concern and sadness for the young ape and his human friend. Soona embraced Dar, burying her head in the older ape’s shoulder. Dar gently stroked the younger female’s head, keeping an eye on her son and feeling tears well in her own brown orbs. Anaya reached out to pull the door shut to give Noa some privacy, and a chance to say goodbye to the Echo.
Noa cradled Mae’s unconscious body in his arms, gently stroking her cheek with the backs of his fingers. He had placed her head against his shoulder, gently brushing away strands of her hair from her face. The young ape bit his bottom lip, as he tried his best not to hoot in sadness. Noa was too far gone into his mourning to take notice of the door opening again. Or the heavy footsteps coming up behind him. He then felt someone’s hand on his shoulder, looming over him and his friend.
“Is she dead?” asked Proximus Caesar darkly.
“Because of you,” Noa accused weakly.
“It was… my duty for…apes.”
“Duty?! For apes?! ”
“In the name of Caesar,” the bonobo king huffed, “to keep apes strong.” Noa shot the barest, most hurtful and hateful of glances over his shoulder at the bonobo. “The true Caesar…wanted to live…in harmony with… humans,” the young ape argued weakly, putting an emphasis on the word true. Proximus sighed audibly through his nostrils, before growling slowly, “I am the true Caesar. My words…the apes follow.”
The bonobo king turned away from Noa, releasing the younger ape’s shoulder. “Now, we are rid of the human girl. We will find more…and make them…our slaves. Better yet…we will kill them all…and this world will be ours.”
Noa had placed Mae back down on the bed, and laid her hands on top of each other over her stomach, and lightly patted them before standing up to face the bonobo. “Kill…all humans?! Caesar cared for humans…as well as apes. And…there can be no world…without humans…without her,” the young ape interjected defeatedly, gesturing to the human girl behind him. “Mae…made her choice…Noa,” Proximus said, glancing over his shoulder at the chimpanzee, “she died for humans…and humans are always selfish. They do not…know how to…love.”
“‘Humans… do not know…how to love?’” Noa repeated before challenging Proximus, feeling his hackles rising along his neck and shoulders “and what…do you know of love? Who do you love?!” He suspected his golden jade eyes were wild with grief and anger, because he noticed the bonobo’s own brown eyes widened slightly and inhaled sharply.
“I…I love my kingdom,” Proximus for once in his life, stumbled on his words, “I tried to make you understand, Noa. That humans are…wicked and weak. To teach you…the ways of Caesar. But I was wrong…you are also…weak.” Noa curled his fingers into fists, and gave the bonobo the most deathly glare he could muster. “No…you are the weak one… You are the wicked one… ‘And the wicked shall not go unpunished!’” The young ape repeating the words the bonobo used during one of his speeches.
Proximus snarled at Noa before lunging forward to grab the chimp. Noa was two steps ahead of him, bending at the waist and tackling the bonobo right through the open door. The chimpanzee banged his fists into the bonobo’s face and chest, screeching so loud it rang through the air. He simply did not care anymore, now that Mae laid dead in the room behind him.
Proximus grunted as he kneed Noa in the abdomen and pushed him off. The bonobo beat the younger one in the face and chest. The chimp could feel blood, he couldn’t tell if it was his own or the older ape’s. Noa grabbed Proximus by his shoulders, and headbutted the bonobo as hard as he could.
He stumbled off of the chimp, and Noa crawled away from the false king. The young ape felt a hand wrap around his ankle, dragging him back to the bonobo. Noa kicked Proximus in the face with his other foot, causing the bonobo to release his ankle. The force from the kick was enough for the older ape to knock against the metal railing of the ship. Proximus became disoriented when his head banged against it.
X.X.X.X.X.X.
Back in the small room, Mae stirred awake, blinking rapidly for her eyes to adjust in the forthcoming dawn. She brought a hand to her face and head, checking for any signs of injury. She turned her head to survey her surroundings, the young woman was in a small room and was lying down on a cot with a worn blanket underneath her. There was a door to her right, and she could hear the sounds of apes fighting each other. She gasped softly when she heard Noa screech in pain, and the other ape he was fighting was Proximus Caesar. Mae heard the older ape’s head bang against the metal railing, and Noa coming into view in the doorway.
She called out weakly, reaching out for him, “Noa!”
The young chimp turned his head, his golden jade eyes glistened in surprise and unshed tears of happiness at her. He hopped over to her on all fours, and crouched in front of her. “Mae,” he exhaled, grabbing her outstretched hand and feeling relief that she was alive. He gently picked her up in his strong arms, and she wrapped her own around his neck.
As quickly as he could, Noa carried Mae out of the room and ventured further into the ship to find a place to hide. Eventually, the chimp placed the girl onto his back, and climbed up into the rafters. From their hiding spot, Noa could see Proximus had come out of his disoriented state and was searching for them. The bonobo growled in frustration, sniffing the air for their scents, but the salt from the ocean was too thick to trace them. The chimp stiffened when he noticed Proximus was right under them now. He felt Mae tightened her grip slightly around his neck and chest.
Then the bonobo glanced above into the rafters.
“Going somewhere?” he snarled in wicked delight, before ascending up to where they were.
Noa told the girl to hang on as he climbed further away from the approaching bonobo. The chimp swung from rafter to rafter, he felt Mae hold on as tightly as she could on his back. They could hear Proximus along the rusted metal, prompting Noa to climb faster. He could feel Mae losing her grip around his torso. He had to hurry to find a safe place for them. The young chimp found an opening to the deck of the ship, swung from a metal rafter, and pulled himself and Mae through it.
Mae let go of the ape at once, when she was safely on the deck. He was about to join her when something grabbed him by the ankle, his eyes widening in surprise. He was pulled back down into the opening, releasing a screech of fear as he disappeared. “NOA!” Mae screamed, reaching out for his hand through the opening.
X.X.X.X.X.X.
Proximus threw Noa onto a rafter, the younger ape hitting his head against it. The bonobo placed his foot on the chimp’s chest, slowly pressing down as he sneered, “I thought… you were like me, Noa. I was wrong…” Proximus leaned down further, pressing even more into Noa’s chest, causing the chimp to choke. The young chimp could feel himself becoming lightheaded.
“Your heart is too…human!”
Noa growled at the bonobo, grabbing onto his ankle and using whatever strength he had left, pulled the older ape’s foot off his chest and tossed him to the side. The bonobo grunted in pain when he hit the metal wall of the ship. The young chimp pushed himself up, looking around for the way he took to get to the opening. Proximus struggled to get up, feeling disoriented from the force. The older ape pushed himself up, only to slip on a wet patch of dirt and grime on the rusted metal.
Proximus grabbed hold of the edge of the rafter, hanging on with whatever strength he had left. The bonobo growled in frustration as he contemplated a way to get to the younger ape, and finish him off once and for all. There was a loud creak in the metal, the wet spot had created an indentation in the rafter and then it snapped in half. Proximus hooted loudly in fear as his half broke off and dangled in the air. The bonobo screeched out for Noa to help him.
The young chimpanzee was halfway near the opening to the deck, when Proximus had called out to him. The bonobo was dangling from half of the rusted rafter of the ship. Noa dared to briefly look down at the bottom of the ship’s interior. It was a very large and long fall from where he was, and where Proximus Caesar was still hanging on to the metal half. The chimp made eye contact with the bonobo, the older ape reaching out his hand in desperation.
Noa growled in frustration at this predicament. From the opening to the deck, he could hear Mae yell out for him. He turned his head to look at her, the human female was halfway through the opening and reaching out her hand to his. The chimpanzee gritted his front teeth together, contemplating whether to help Proximus, or grab the human female’s hand to safety.
There was another creak in the metal, and Noa quickly turned his head toward the sound. The rafter half where Proximus was dangling from had moved again, this time away from the other side of the ship. The bonobo screamed out for Noa to help him again, reaching out his elongated arm to the chimp. The younger ape knew it was useless to do so from the far distance between them.
Noa could only think of one thing to say to the disgraced king.
“I agree with you…on one thing. My heart is too human…”
X.X.X.X.X.X.
The bonobo roared at him as the rafter broke completely off, and the reverberation from the metal caused the older ape to let go. Proximus fell into the recesses of the ship, with the rafter following after. Noa could hear both the older ape hitting the bottom and the metal rafter falling on top of him. The chimpanzee winced at the sound as it echoed throughout the ship.
Noa closed his eyes briefly, he didn’t know if it was a moment of silence for the bonobo, or utter shock from such a gruesome way to die. He inhaled sharply through his nostrils before ascending upward to the human female reaching out to him. The young chimp clasped his large hand as gently as he could around Mae’s much smaller hand. She had some help from Anaya and Soona as all three of them pulled him through the opening. The two chimpanzees embraced him tightly, hooting in happiness that their childhood friend was safe. They touched their foreheads with each other, huffing lightly with joy as Dar approached as well to wrap her son in his arms. He touched his forehead with his mother, feeling grateful that his friends and family were safe.
Noa turned his attention to Mae after his mother released him from her embrace. The human female stood there shyly, her gaze not quite looking at him as he approached her.
It was Mae who eventually stepped forward and wrapped her small arms around his neck. The young chimp was shocked at first that it was the human who initiated this intimate gesture. He slowly wrapped his arms around her, one around her back and the other stroking her hair gently. He felt her small hand grasp the fur along his shoulders, burying her face in the crook of his neck. She felt so small in his strong arms, he suspected she felt perfectly comfortable at the same time. Noa would keep that thought and feeling to himself.
She pulled back to look into his golden jade eyes. The human female had a small smile on her lips, and he returned it in kind.
He felt a hand on his shoulder, turning his head slightly to his left, he noticed it was his mother with Soona and Anaya next to her. The older female chimp gently took his hand and Mae’s into her own, and placed them on top of each other before placing hers on top of their entwined hands.
Then Anaya placed his own hand on top of Dar’s and then Soona. “Together strong,” Dar said softly. Noa noticed the tears streaming down Mae’s cheeks.
He raised his free hand to her cheek, and gently wiped away her tears with the backs of his fingers. That small smile from earlier was still on both of their faces.
X.X.X.X.X.X.
The four apes and the human female joined the rest of the Eagle clan in the courtyard of Proximus’s domain. Anaya surged forward, hooting in delight and encouraging the others to join him. Dar and Soona stayed behind with Noa, taking in the celebration going on around them. Noa looked around for Mae, until he glanced over his shoulder behind him.
She was standing in the shadows of the rusted ship, her right hand grasping her left forearm and looking away at something in the distance. The young chimp huffed lightly before nodding to himself, and slowly approached the young human.
He reached out his hand to her, offering her a small smile. Mae glanced down at his large hand before meeting his golden jade eyes.
He nodded slowly, silently telling her it was all right. She placed her hand into his, and he pulled her into the light of the day.
Noa led the human female over to his mother, Anaya and Soona, and turned to the remaining Eagle clan. The rest of the clan stood there silently in the courtyard, staring at the human female next to their new leader.
Mae glanced around at the Eagle Clan, her grip on Noa’s hand tightening slightly in anxiety. She could feel all eyes on her, some of the apes closest to the quintet had sniffed in the air around her. She couldn’t tell if they were scenting her as a friend, or sniffing in utter disgust as a foe.
Then, a young female child ape approached her slowly.
The child ape glanced back briefly at her mother, the older female raising her hand in a way of saying it was okay. The little ape turned back and came to a stop in front of Mae.
The child ape blinked slowly, moving her head up and down taking in the human’s appearance. Mae let go of Noa’s hand when she crouched down to the child’s level.
The little ape cocked her head to the side in curiosity, hooting lowly under her breath. Then, the child reached forward and brushed the backs of her fingers against Mae’s smooth cheek. The human gasped softly at the contact, before giving in and slowly embracing the little ape. The little ape placed her forehead against Mae’s, accepting the human entirely. Mae felt fresh tears stream down her face in joy.
A few more child apes approached Mae, cautious at first, and then began touching her hair and clothes in curiosity and wonder. The human smiled at the ape children around her.
One of the child apes grabbed Mae’s hand, and began leading her into the crowd of the Eagle clan. The other apes lightly brushed their knuckles against the human’s clothes and arms as she passed them.
Noa looked on proudly as Mae traversed through the Eagle clan, his people accepting the human as one of their own.

Animation Night 173: Takashi Nakamura
Hi everyone! It's that time of the week again~
The day that puppets bite their gloves off.
Tonight on Animation Night we'll be taking a look at the works of Takashi Nakamura (中村 たかし).
Nakamura is a director who flies under the radar a bit over here, but for those who know him, he's a unique director - one who we've actually encountered a couple of times before, actually! He directed one of my favourite shorts in Robot Carnival [Animation Night 158] Chicken Man and Red Neck, in which the machinery of a city comes alive to have a violently strange Bosch-like party led by a strange red-robed robot, witnessed only by one salaryman on a moped...
...and if you remember when we looked into the three adaptations of Project Itoh's novels [Animation Night 127], he co-directed Harmony with Michael Arias, a powerfully understated film about a high tech biopower future and people who reject its utopia through a suicide pact. We also saw him in the Japan Animator Expo, with the charming Bubu & Bubulina...
But let's give a fuller story...
As an animator, Nakamura entered the industry very young, signing on as a colourist and inbetweener at Tatsunoko in 1974 - at which point he was only 16, an aspiring mangaka newly arrived in Tokyo. Working in Tatsunoko's distinctive 'industry within an industry', he was introduced to Hirokazu Ishino's 'Anidō' association, in which he was introduced to not just many important animators but also had the chance to see animation from around the world, from Norm McLaren to Japanese independent animators like Kenzō Masaoka. The two films that got him most excited were Takahata's Horus, Prince of the Sun [AN41] and Disney's Fantasia [AN15], both of which contained incredible flexes of effects animation.
(Incidentally, it makes me happy that a lot of the films Watzky mentions showing at Anidō showed up on here! Following in the footsteps of giants and all that.)
Once Nakamura got the animation bug he put aside his manga aspirations and became a key animator, going freelance a couple years later. In 1979 he saw Galaxy Express 999, and got to witness the insane 'liquid fire' effects of Kanada, and he instantly became a devotee - soon enough getting a chance to work with Kanada directly.
And by the early 80s Nakamura was definitely making a name, already working in animation direction and solo-animating entire episodes of Gold Lightan for Tatsunoko. The next couple of years he'd end up working on Nausicaa, Macross DYRL and the with Rintaro [AN53, 134] on Genma Taisen. By now he was specialising hard in effects (not unlike Anno!), and his work had become terrifyingly elaborate, look at this building collapsing into every single element or the clothes coming to the life under the power of a psychic. His work also inspired another incredibly significant animator to enter the industry - Kōji Morimoto, future cofounder of Studio 4°C - and they ended up working together on Genma Taisen.
Meanwhile on Nausicaa, Morimoto handled some of its most memorable scenes like the opening sequence where Nausicaa is pursued by the giant Ohmu. Once again you see his fascination with effects and debris, like the shot where the Ohmu explodes out of the forest, sending stalks flying in every directions. In Macross DYRL he animated the scenes of the gravity flipping sideways and a street's worth of stuff tumbling down all at once, elaborating on a scene by Itano from the TV show.
In short, if there's lots of bits of stuff flying around in a mid-80s movie, there's a good chance that Nakamura was involved somehow.
Such a focus made him a perfect fit for the 'realist school' developing in the late 80s - whyat you might loosely call the Otomo circle. You see his work on both Manie-Manie/Neo Tokyo and Robot Carnival, and naturally enough he ended up part of the team for Akira. Given what he'd already accomplished, could he somehow step it up another notch? You bet.
Going by sakugabooru comments, Nakamura's role in Akira was mainly related to two things: explosions, and animation direction. Considering how iconic the explosions in Akira are, and how challenging it was to animate Otomo's very solid and 3D designs... the success of the film depended a lot on Nakamura's insane drawing skills. Further, he was a kind of 'teacher' to the rest of the staff, such as Morimoto. But this was apparently the 'limit' for Nakamura, and after Akira he turned from creating animation for others.
And this point marks a major stylistic turn in Nakamura's work. Starting with the World Masterpiece Theatre adaptation of Peter Pan, on which he worked as character designer, he adopted a highly stripped-down, simplified style. With all the Akira goodwill, he was able to pull in many of the new stars of the 'realist' school, from Okiura to Ohira. But his work became a lot less flashy, focusing more on a Disney-like approach where it's about creating a consistent sense of life rather than individual flashy sequences.
The Hakkenden [AN 122] was one of his first chances to experiment with the new style as a director, with Episode 4 really kicking off the series' trend of completely redesigning the characters according to the sensibilities of each director. He also worked on the kinda obscure but gorgeous realist-school film Junkers Come Here [AN 118] as his own film debut, Catnapped!, progressed.
So Catnapped! This is a weird movie. Many people see a Disney influence in its style, and it definitely broke the 90s trend with a younger target audience - but Disney could never make a movie filled with as much imaginative strange shit as this one. Watzky points out how much Otomo influence there is in the direction - dense environments and elaborate multiplane shots, in contrast to simple character designs which afford a lot of movement. These designs allow great animators like Okiura [AN139] (who animated most of the finale) to really go to town. There's a great para in Watzky's article on the different directions taken by the 'realist' animators.
Catnapped is a pretty short film at less that 80 minutes, a revel of visual imagination; Nakamura's next film A Tree of Palme is just as distinctive but in a different direction. It's another take on the Pinocchio story [c.f. AN138], but a very 'dark, metaphysical' one, with its biggest inspirations apparently being French - Moebius and René Laloux [AN71, 93], with Mutsuo Koseki coming up with art direction capable of comparing to Laloux. The three year megaproject pulled in animator legends from across the board - Inoue, Ohashi, Ando, Masuo, Matsutake, Umetsu! (Count how many directed part of Robot Carnival).
The character designs of Palme look simple in stills, but once you see them in motion, they're anything but - incredibly volumetric and full of life and movement.
In the 2000s and 2010s, Nakamura ended up working with Colorido and 4C a lot (naturally enough given the connection with Morimoto!), increasingly making effective use of CG in his projects. This led up to The Portrait Studio (写真館 Shashinkan) (c.f. AniObsessive) in 2015 - an almost solo short film, with Nakamura writing, storyboarding, designing characters and doing all the key animation, which is a kind of slice through Japanese history through the lens of a photographer who just wants to figure out a way to get his client to smile.
Much like Palme, The Portrait Studio combines simple character designs (in a stylised picture-book look) with very precise, realist animation on 2s and 1s to lend them a sense of density and 'existence'. Moreover, unlike most anime, it uses the raw pencils as finished lines instead of redrawing them clean on a computer. The style might call to mind Otomo's Cannon Fodder, and in fact the two films share a colour designer. 3D is integrated with an unusual degree of skill and subtlety. It makes for a fascinating combination, a very memorable and impactful film for all its apparent simplicity.
So, that's our focus for tonight! We'll be watching Catnapped!, A Tree of Palme and The Portrait Studio, and getting to find out what the deal is with Nakamura - one of the Very Important Guys in the history of anime, influential on so many of my faves... but all too often overlooked by people who aren't like, huge animation nerds.
If that sounds fun, come join me at twitch.tv/canmom - going live in just a minute! I've been wanting to do Nakamura for ages, and today I finally found energy for a writeup. See you there~

Yo! Good morning/evening, hope you are fine^^💝. I wanted to ask you a question but I was afraid that it may bother you or something (you know..that feeling when you are scared that you might disturb someone or being an unwelcome person) but yeah I will ask you since i was serious about your answer for some time now so I hope I'm not annoying you or something *feel free to answer only if you wish^^. You seem to know the characters pretty well, you are quite capable and great at reading and understanding them, one of the things I'm serious about is what do you think would make someone qualified enough to be with malleus? Do they have to be of the same species?certain Reputation, stature or traits?(sorry can't help it since I can't rest until I know everything about what interests me and figure it all out😅). Thanks for giving me some of your precious time I really like your blog, you're amazing💜
No worries, you’re not bothering me at all ^^ I love to talk about my hyperfixations www
Now, I know a lot of fans (particularly on the EN side) like to ship Malleus with their OC and especially with Yuu so I want to first make it clear that my response is NOT meant to invalidate those Malleus shippers. Whatever I say here is based on my own interpretation of canon lore (and let’s be real here, TWST won’t ever confirm if anyone is romantically interested in Yuu because it might not work with how some players view their own relationship with that character). In fanon, anyone can be with anyone, but in canon there are very specific in-universe rules and expectations laid out for Malleus so these are what I will be referring to.
I also want to emphasize that the final traits I discuss in this post do NOT reflect Malleus’s personal tastes or views. He has little say in what kind of an individual his spouse would be, so his own preferences are not speculated about or taken into account here. The traits I will be bringing up are based on what I believe the lore implies are the desirable traits for those marrying into the Draconia royal family.
We got it? Good 👍 Read more below the cut!!
Firstly, I’m completely disregarding the ideas of “Malleus can love whoever he wants to love”, “Malleus can scare people into accepting who he loves”, and/or “Malleus can change the law so he can marry who he loves” (a la Sultan from Aladdin or through some other Disney magic or logic). Here’s why:
In general, those solutions for “high stakes issues” are too simple, and that has never been how Twisted Wonderland tackles complicated problems. Just look at every single OB boy’s backstory. They’re so complex that they aren’t totally resolved by the end of their books; these problems persist and are long term things each of them are working on addressing. This is also true of the politics TWST introduces to us; Leona for example explains how there is social pushback and resistance to the idea of infrastructure reform because the culture of the Sunset Savanna stresses harmony with nature. This has made it difficult for them to adopt new technologies because real politicians in their world have to seriously weigh their cultural values with their health and societal progress. The only time there are really easy solutions are in events or vignettes where the emotional stakes are not super high, but who Malleus marries is, in fact, super important since this will entirely change the life of a main character and his country.
With that first bullet point in mind… No, Malleus cannot love whoever he wants to love. Certainly, he may feel affection for another but he can never truly be with them. He is royalty and the only heir to the throne of Briar Valley. It follows that he is expected to marry for political reasons/to better his nation. This is a non-negotiable obligation for him.
Rather than saying, “Malleus cannot scare people into accepting who he loves”, I think it’s more accurate to say Malleus knows he probably shouldn’t. I mean, yes, he may be upset about his S/O not being accepted by his people but I feel that is discrediting a lot of the loyalty he has for his own country. As a kid he may have thrown tantrums when he was upset and potentially harmed staff, but as a 178 year old he has a much better understanding of decorum and maintaining it in spite of his own grudges. For example, even though he personally dislikes Leona he still commands Sebek to apologize to him because, at the end of the day, this could harm Briar Valley’s relationship with the Sunset Savanna. That’s not to say that Malleus can’t be petty (he definitely is)—but implying he would be petty toward basically his entire country just because they would disapprove of the one he loves?? (We know this would likely be true because Sebek’s parents faced similar backlash when they got together.) I feel like his own sense of awareness and responsibility for his country, crown, and people would override that. As an example, Malleus states that he has never been in a car before because the senate would be against it and often kept Malleus in the castle. Someone of his power could easily ignore them and sneak out and do whatever he wanted, yet the dialogue implies Malleus didn’t. He obeyed his political advisors even when he was younger and arguably much more immature. Malleus might not like certain decisions made about his life but it sounds like he ultimately complies with them.
Continuing from the previous point, let’s say for the sake of argument that Malleus does scare everyone into line. What about his public image and the mental health of his S/O? Maybe Malleus can frighten people to not talk out of turn to his face, but he cannot control what people whisper about him behind closed doors or to treat his S/O well or like they actually like them. Not only would they be alienated (away from their own home and forced to adapt to a new one) but they’d be treated oddly by others too. What kind of reputation is that for Malleus? To be a tyrant king who throws a hissy fit anytime someone talks about his partner in a way he doesn’t approve of? With a spouse who is not at their best mentally because of the constant ostracization? (This is similar to what Leona experienced in his childhood.) I don’t think Malleus would want to subject anyone to that kind of life, especially not one he loves. And again, this attitude would be the vast majority of his people. It’s not like it can be avoided or resolved in an easy manner, especially when the people of Briar Valley have proven to be against change.
Lastly, Malleus would not change the law so he can be with whoever he wants to. To begin with, I doubt this is a unilateral position the senate would approve of. But okay, let’s accept that Malleus is royalty so his power overrides the advisors’ power. So he effectively just changed a law for a very selfish and personal reason rather than changing something to actually benefit his people. That doesn’t feel in-character for him, not when Malleus seems to understand that it is the duty of those in higher status to help those below them rather than themselves (see: Riddle’s Suitor Suit vignettes. Malleus has acted selfish before, yes (who remembers Endless Halloween Night? His Dorm Uniform vignettes? I do.)—but never at the cost of changing the status quo of his country. (Book 7 is not included here because he’s in a very distressed emotional state then; this “new law” scenario posits that Malleus is in a normal state of mind.) This is a major change—change which Briar Valley, its people, and most importantly, Malleus, are not ready for. You think there wouldn’t be social pushback against this? From a society that has become complacent with its own way of life and is still isolated from the rest of the world? That Malleus, someone who struggles greatly with accepting life changes himself, could enact such a big change so easily? (On a more technical level, you don’t just pass a law and it instantly becomes tangible or real, there is a process of approval and then implementation.)
Additionally, it’s made clear in Ghost Marriage that “[Malleus] cannot enter into an engagement lightly”, which is why Sebek goes in his place. Eliza, the Ghost Bride, is royalty (er, albeit dead) but it seems that royal status is not enough to qualify as his partner. Maybe this is because she’s dead and doesn’t have anything of value for Briar Valley (no land, no people, no political power), but it could also mean that the partner has to be given the thumbs up by other parties.
All that being said, here are some of the conditions I think would have to be met for Malleus’s future spouse:
Has to be someone of equal or at least high status. This means they also have to be a royal or at least of nobility. This appears to be true of Malleus’s dad, who is referred to as a duke.
Because of how self-contained Briar Valley is + nocturnal fae having beef with diurnal fae, I imagine his partner would have to also be a nocturnal fae. This would also solve the MASSIVE lifespan difference between fae and non-fae because at least fae would be far closer to each other even if their lifespans fluctuate but subspecies.
Someone suited to rule by his side. Being married into any royal family is no joke—it comes with the expectation that you will contribute somehow, and the partner should be fully equipped to enter the world of politics with him.
Piggybacking off the last point, I think mental fortitude is also a prerequisite. This is because being a politician (navigating the social climate both within your country and outside of it, keeping your people and colleagues happy, maintaining public approval, managing laws, dealing with potential attempts on your life, etc.) can be very stressful and can hurt those who are faint of heart or not prepared for the responsibility. Leaders have to make tough calls at the drop of a hat, and they have to be ready for it.
Has a lot to offer in terms of benefits to Briar Valley as a country. This could be in terms of resources, connections, and/or political savvy. This appears to be true of Malleus’s dad, who acted as a diplomat for Briar Valley.
Vetting and formal approval from the senate. lmao good luck with that
Has to be able and willing to have a child. They at least need an heir to the throne to succeed Malleus. (However, knowing how exclusionary and conservative as heck the senators are, I doubt they would accept anything but a biological child 💀)
Preferably someone with powerful magic or is skilled at magic already so as to lessen the chance of “tainting” the bloodline with a weak mage or a non-mage.
I believe that Briar Valley would prefer someone with old fashioned values like them, not someone pushing for massive reform. They have a culture that is resistant to change and a history of fighting for resources with outsiders, so if Malleus’s new spouse tries to introduce a bunch of technology or open its borders to other countries (even if they have good intentions), the people + the senate may oppose them. His father is implied to be open-minded, but he at least understood that such change isn’t reasonable without time and effort dedicated to the endeavor.
All that being said 💦 I think that this topic is actually less about what Malleus as an individual wants and what his country, his people, and, yes, even his asshole senators, want. This is basically an arranged marriage situation so that their country can maintain power and relevance. It’s about the collective and what Malleus must do for their perceived security and prosperity.

juno signs and their specific love language🦋🪷 pt2
Lovely Complex
juno shows us what’s the style that functions better with you -relationships, meaningful committed partnership-, the characteristics of our ideal partner and more.
birth chart + tropical + whole sign system
Taurus
FIRST OF ALL, you don’t play around-yes you do but-, you want someone loyal to their values, someone that will listen to your stubbornness -stubborn thoughts/mind-. you want a GENTLEMAN on whoever you like -ik gentleman is originally referred to men but my intention it’s there-, you want someone that’s drooling for you and shows how attentive they’re without shame. HEAR ME OUT, someone with MONEY or in other words, that can prioritize you economically and takes their time on giving you gifts -flowers, makeup, chocolates, cheesy stuff-. someone that has the ability of transmitting peace in all your bullshit. someone who seems, at first sight, like a junkie? who appears intimidating but then you get to talk to them a few times and realize they’re genuinely a sweetheart. taurus juno will spend like nothing money on you, specially on food, they’ll share it 😭 -idk if it’s just my experience-. this is not beating the taurus allegations. most of the time individuals with juno in taurus have this calm and too much energy that needs to be recharged with their special one.
Libra
they have to be esthetically appealing or have this venusian sense of things, fashion, hygiene, even k how to choose the right t-shirt for an outfit -jk-. they need someone who brings them balance, the balance they seek in all the aspects of their life, including their ideal partner. they LOVE seeing their partner walking and say “hi” to everyone and being reciprocated: social butterfly. practically, being conscious of how to treat people, emotionally intelligent that’ll benefit them in the social aspect. They seek someone who has charisma, who has a sense of justice and consideration, like how almost every prince of disney is presented: the idealized version. idk why I imagine ryan evans from high school musical smirking when libra juno it’s mentioned 😭. you need someone who helps you to feel part of something, not to feel excluded, you want to be in peace. YOU FUCKING LOVE CLICHE STUFF, even if you won’t admit it. someone who let you be a drama queen and will keep it cool with it. your specific love language is to help them in their outfits, in their hygiene, even haircut. idk there’s something so idealized in how libra juno loves, they admire their partner so much.
Leo
personally, sometimes I get pretty confused when they describe what a libra wants and what a leo wants in their ideal partner, the thing here is that leo needs someone who would see them as who they’re; on the other hand, libra is not needy of that treatment, they want someone who would fit perfectly on that space they need to balance their life. leo juno needs and they’re attracted to someone who’s the center of attention without even trying, talented asf, someone who will treat you like you’re their world, who will value and recognize the things you do for others and how you care about people, who would do the same for you. they’ll make you feel as special as you fcking are. leo juno needs expression, affirmation to feel in harmony. THE ATTENTION their ideal partner will give is crucial. they don’t want someone that’s comfortable to be around, they want someone who could practically be their enemy, who match their energy, who’s as competitive and as talented as them. leo juno specific love language is showing you towards others as your partner/special person. this Juno knows their value.

What Alice In Wonderland Character You Are | Pick A Pile
Hello and welcome to this Pick A Pile! In here you'll find out what Alice In Wonderland character you are and why. I hope you guys enjoy and find this useful. Do make sure to leave comments down below on your experience! I do want to remind you all that this is a General Pick A Pile which means this is for a lot of people; therefore keep what resonates and leave what doesn't.
Masterlist
Pick A Pile!
Pile 1:
Tweedledee and Tweedledum. I know these are two characters but they go hand in hand with one another when it comes to anything. These twins symbolize parental figures to Alice and help her keep her imagination in check.
You help people when it comes to their problems, you comfort them, try to find solutions, you let them talk to you about their problems and make them feel comfortable and confident when it's needed. You are a pleasant and caring person to be around, even though you could probably put more of that energy into yourself instead of someone else.
Next to this these two characters are identical twins which stand for; duality, joy, harmony, good luck, a perfect balance. Some things may not go along with your personality as of now, other things might do, but you have the potential to become this, the aptitude to become all these things.
Pile 2:
The White Rabbit. The white rabbit in Alice in Wonderland is the spark of curiosity that let's Alice experience all the adventures she gets herself in over the time. Something you might find in yourself; curiosity, wanting to learn new things, loving to hear new information and gossip.
The white rabbit also is a very anxious character in Alice in Wonderland, something that can't go unnpticed by anyone who reads or watches it. Little things can make you stress, you always want to be in time and find it difficult to accept things you do aren't always as perfect as you wish them to be. You could be scared of what other people think of you, always wanting to please them to think highly of you, scared you aren't good enough or don't do good enough.
Many of you won't have a very positive perception of yourselves, something that I hope will be worked on because you are charismatic, kind and hardworking, just like the white rabbit.
Pile 3:
The Red King. In the movie adaptation of Disney this character is someone who is always cautious around others, a people pleaser, someone who makes sure others don't get mad or freak out, anything to make them feel better. You might be someone who gets walked over a lot by the people around you since compared to you, others have a more dominant personality than you.
In the book; Through The Looking-Glass, The red king turns out to be someone who made up the whole looking-glass world, turning him into this divine being in this story. This could mean you are a very creative person, someone who loves to imagine things and are great at solving problems in many ways.
The red king being a divine entity could also show you are a unique person, someone with a unique personality. Someone who can become great at what they do, a passionate person that can be succesful in whatever they'd love to do, love to become and learn.

Wizblr, you’re the only ones on the internet who understand my deep and troubling compulsion to world-build and expand lore. So I have to ask you all an open-ended question: what makes a god in the W101 canon?
I think Spider and Raven, and probably Bartleby too, are pretty widely accepted as gods both canonically and by fans. So if we use them as a litmus test for godhood, who else is a god? The first world titans? Dasein? Mellori? Malistaire the Undying? The wizard? Morganthe? …Merle Ambrose?
What skills or features do you have to have to be a god of the spiral? Immortality? The ability to sing the song of creation? Being around during the first world? Extremely op magic that literally rips holes in reality? Or is every god just a little different and it’s up to everyone else to decide if you’re a god or not?
Do you have to be the patron god of specific things, like the god of light and order, the god of darkness and chaos, the god of harmony, the god of Nothing, etc?
Is it like Homestuck where there are tiers of gods? If the wizard could be considered a god, would they be a lower tier than Bartleby?
I’m not really counting the immortals on mount olympus, because they’re just glorified chickens sitting on a rock and handing out gear to wizards. Yes I adore them, especially Poseidon who gets no love, but I’m talking about beings who have a major influence on the spiral as a whole
In my own HCs, I think Raven, Spider, Bartleby, Dasein, and the wizard are gods. Raven and Spider were keeping things together until their divorce and subsequent marriage counseling in isolation. Bartleby has those two freaky eyes I always forget about and he’s been around since the first world. He’s also kind of a living world door lolol. Dasein popped out of literal nowhere but he can take on the forms of others, made himself into a sentient world, and put the schools of magic in a blender on the “idgaf” setting. The wizard, I mean cmon, they’re called the divine paradox !! They managed to summon another god while trying to take down the Disney corporation. I like to HC that they’ve achieved immortality and are just too young to realize it yet. I have a whole thing about that and I hope I have the time to make a comic about it in the future :]]
But I’m curious to hear what everybody else thinks about this messy subject >:]

My Tarot Card Collection
I am not an expert tarot card reader, however I've been gifted many throughout my life. Below is how I approach my cards and a big-pictured view on how Tarot is linked to astrology.
Tarot the Complete Kit - This was my first tarot card deck that I learned with. I use it for experimenting and as a reference.
Disney Villains - This deck I use for different perspectives or for when I do an unusual type of reading. Alice in Wonderland- The only tarot card deck I bought myself (before I was told that's somewhat taboo), I use it mostly for creativity and inspirational purposes.
Tarot of the Divine, Inspired by Deities, Folklore, and Fairy Tales from Around the World- This is my favorite deck and the one I have the strongest "connection" with. I use it for guidance, reflection, and intuition exercises.
The Zodiac Signs + Tarot Cards Below are the associated major arcana tarot cards with each sign.
Aries: The Emperor Leadership, power, authority,
Taurus: The Hierophant Tradition, wisdom, marriage
Gemini: The Lovers Love, relationships, choices
Cancer: The Chariot Determination, willpower, hard work
Leo: Strength Courage, strength, self-belief
Virgo: The Hermit Meditation, introspection. solitude or independence
Libra: Justice Truth, fairness, law
Scorpio: Death Endings, profound change, self-awareness
Sagittarius: Temperance Drive, harmony, vision
Capricorn: The Devil Materialism, temptation, freedom from restraints
Aquarius: The Star Hope, inspiration, opportunity

Inspired by my own recent trip to Disney World…
The Ghouls’ Favourite Disney Rides!
This is Era IV/V Ghouls and based off the rides at Walt Disney World in Florida
Below the cut bc I may have rambled a tad
Aether - Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster
It’s fast, it’s fun, it’s got rock music, and Dew just about meets the height requirement which he find hilarious. Guaranteed that after he comes off it and gets back to his guitar, he’ll be practicing a bunch of Aerosmith songs.
Dewdrop - The Seas With Nemo & Friends.
He’ll say it’s Rock ‘n’ Rollercoaster but it’s actually Nemo. He loves the peace and quiet and Finding Nemo is his favourite Disney film. He also loves the aquarium that comes after the ride because he feels like he can just about feel his connection to Water there. Disney magic ig.
Rain - Kali River Rapids
It was Splash Mountain and he is still bitter about that closing but of course the Water Ghoul will love the water rides. He likes the challenge of keeping his glamour up while having buckets of his element dumped on him. And he may secretly use his magic to dump more water on whoever comes on it with him.
Mountain - Soarin’
Fitting in with my other hc it’s his favourite simply for the fact that his feet don’t touch the ground. He also loves the smells in the Africa and India scenes. Living With The Land is close second and right next door so bonus.
Swiss - The Haunted Mansion
It might come as a shock that his favourite ride is a very slow dark ride but he loves it. It’s creepy and funny and he loves trying to find a harmony with the singing busts for “Grim Grinning Ghosts”. He also knows the entire Ghost Host narration and can say it in-time with the ride in a very good impression.
Cumulus - Kilimanjaro Safaris
She loves the animals, the whole thing is outdoors and she could take over the job of the driver because of the amount of times she’s been on it. She also watches the docu-series on Disney+ about the care that goes into the animals and can name a few of them while on the ride.
Phantom - Guardians Of The Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind
In a similar vein to Aether, it’s fast, fun and has good music. They also are obsessed with films and love Guardians so it’s a fun little bonus. They know all the songs that could play and will belt them word-for-word while riding. Also Quints, stars, makes sense.
Cirrus - Tron Lightcycle Run
She loves the air that she gets on the outdoor section and thinks it’s really awesome ride. She’s never actually watched the film (much to Phantom’s horror) but she loves the ride and will be up very early to get a virtual queue for it.
Aurora - Seven Dwarfs Mine Train
It’s not about her height. One of her first movie nights topside included Disney films and Snow White has always been a favourite since, including using some of the songs as warm-ups backstage. Her and Dew take pride in the comparisons to the dwarfs and she will wait any time necessary to get on the ride.
Sunshine - Astro Orbiter
She loves heights and it gives a great view of the parks. She’s also out in the sun the whole time which is a massive lure for her. As much as she craves adrenaline, she also loves how it’s a bit different to the other spinner rides and the space/future theming is cool.

Strange World was fucking phenomenal but I can see why they didn't advertise it. Not only does it have people of colour and a white man and black woman happily married with a son AND their three lwgged dog, but it also had an openly accepted and happy gay couple that was accepted with no fuss, father and son issues resolved through talking and accepting each other ans cominf to an understanding, and oh yeah not mention significant time for giving up the thing oil that gave them technology and significant societal advancements because it's destroying their fucking world and how saving their world is more important than their oil pando because it's a living thing and they can find alternate sources of power and energy and live harmoniously with their world.
Yeah I can see why the oil companies probably 'persuaded' Disney with big $$$ to make them not talk about it.
Anyways I fucking love this film, Splat has my whole heart, I want to hold the little healing yellow blobs gentle like hamburger and I want to give Legend tummy rubs.

Minish and Kokiri/Koroks
i love the forest/fairy stuff in zelda, it's my favorite thing (reminds me of the disney fairy stuff like pillow hollow) and my favorite races/tribes/whatever are the forest/fairy creatures - the Minish, the Kokiri and the Koroks (who are an evolution of the Kokiri, since they're like forest spirits and can shape shift)
i've always wondered if they've ever met before. in minish cap, the minish forest is right near where the kokiri forest is in ocarina of time. and there's a lot of tall grass and pots full of rupees and stuff in the kokiri village (minish like to hide rupees and items in places for humans to find). the minish are also said to only show themselves to children, and the kokiri forest and the lost woods are the domain of the kokiri and the skull kids. who are like magic forest children
i wonder if the minish are still around during ocarina of time? i'd like to think so because i really like them. i also really like the kokiri, the skull kids, and the fairies, so i'd like to come up with what i think they're doing.
the kokiri are all given guardian fairies by the great deku tree, who is basically the king of the forest domain (lost woods, kokiri forest, the village, etc) and again, in minish cap, the forest where some of the minish have settled in is located in the same area on the map as the kokiri forest in ocarina of time. so!!!
what if the minish and the kokiri live in harmony together? the great deku tree would protect the minish since the entire forest is under his protection. the kokiri are spirits of nature, so if they leave the forest, they leave the protection of the great deku tree, and they'll die. but minish live all over the hyrule, using magic to be able to live in harmony with humans. you'd have to use magic portals to shrink down and see them. they help humans from their magical world hidden beneath their noses. so like guardians, in a way?
the minish also have like, high elders and sages. ezlo from minish cap is a very powerful minish. maybe the minish elders/sages grew a closer relationship with the great deku tree we see in ocarina of time. i think that would make some sense. maybe it was around when this great deku tree was growing to power?
maybe something happened between four swords and ocarina of time that caused the great deku tree to come to the aid of the minish, taking them all under his care so they can continue to live on. then the minish all over hyrule migrated to the forest, and lived in harmony with the children of the forest (the kokiri and the skull kids)
i don't know much about the forest in twlight princess, but i don't think either the great deku tree or the kokiri ever appear. i'll ignore the forest in the child timeline, and i'll also ignore the forest in the downfall timeline because the great deku tree is nowhere to be found.
as for fairies, i don't know entirely how they work? the fairies the kokiri have are sent to them by the great deku tree. so the fairies from the forest must have also been created by the deku tree, right? i'm not sure. the existance of the great fairies and the queen fairy makes me think that fairies are their own separate thing. and like the minish, they appear all over hyrule. maybe there are some fairies who chose to live in the world of the great deku tree, and live in harmony with the forest spirits and the minish.
so in the adult timeline, where hyrule was flooded. the deku sprout that grew to life in the bad future of ocarina of time is the very same great deku tree in wind waker. the koroks are the kokiri, the same children of the forest from ocarina of time. they're forest spirits after all. they just took on new forms to adjust to the new life of the great sea. so what could've happened to the minish?
could they still be living amongst the children of the forest? maybe they escaped with some of the survivors who fled to the mountain tops during the flood? or maybe the minish realm protected them in some way? i'm not sure how their magic works but they make me really curious. i'd love another zelda game with the minish, i want to learn more about them.
as for the fairies, i dont think they live in the forest haven (formerly kokiri forest). instead, they gather inside a giant fairy fountain inside the rock barrier that is mother and child isles. so safe to say in the adult timeline the fairies may no longer be living alongside the great deku tree they same way they used to in ocarina of time.
anyway this whole post was prosrastination from wiriting something
