Dining on the Disney Wish | Sneak Peek from Making the Disney Wish streaming on Disney+ February 17, 2023
Dining meets storytelling aboard the Disney Wish. Long before the Disney Wish set sail, Imagineers, food and beverage managers, and chefs from around the world were designing restaurants, planning and testing out menus, and concocting one-of-a-kind drinks. What does it take to feed 4,000 guests and 1,500 crew on a floating castle on the sea hundreds of miles from shore? Making the Wish: Disney’s…

feeling(s)
Kenshi has been blind for maybe an hour or two.
Johnny looks over at him with sympathy. He's not sure what he could possibly do or say to make things seem any less bleak for him. The man was just trying to get his family's heirloom back and now, after months of training and dedication, one of his five senses is gone permanently through no fault of his own. If Johnny were in Kenshi's position, he's sure he'd be feeling just as desolate, if not more so.
Kung Lao is sitting in the far corner, talking to Baraka. He seems genuinely fascinated by Tarkat as a disease. Were Johnny not in the same situation as them, he would find that particular conversation topic a bit morbid. Right now, it's really all they have to talk about. They've already exhausted all the small talk options you normally go through when first meeting someone. They might as well start talking about the disease that'll eventually kill Baraka.
The salve on the cloth seems to have worked a little, because at least Kenshi isn't moaning in pain every few seconds anymore. Not that it makes things significantly more cheerful, but it does help the atmosphere a bit.
Johnny taps on his knees as he sits, eyes darting between looking at Kung Lao and Kenshi. He's kind of in between where the two have sat themselves, a visual and metaphorical median between the two ways one could possibly react to getting imprisoned by a sorcerer that's almost 100% going to kill you. (To be fair, there isn't much that connects the points of "casually talking about a stranger's terminal illness with them as though you're both standing by the office water cooler talking about whatever hit TV show is airing these days" and "rocking back in forth in the corner about how a different terminally ill stranger took your eyes and you have nothing left in this world." Johnny supposes the best middle point is "looking anxiously between your two co-workers and not saying anything because Jesus Christ, what the fuck are you supposed to say in this situation besides aforementioned terminal illness.")
He really wishes that Kenshi still had his eyes, because every time he looked at Johnny, it always seemed to make everything feel okay.
Johnny thinks for a second and then scoots closer to Kenshi. It's only once he accidentally bumps up against Kenshi's foot and scares the living shit out of everyone in the cell that he realizes he probably should've given an audible cue that he was going to be approaching the newly blind guy.
After Kenshi's done having a mini panic attack over the sudden Hollywood A-lister jumpscare he's gotten, Johnny looks at him and asks, quietly, "Do you want to hold Sento for a bit?"
Kenshi turns to face him and even underneath the newly christened blindfold, Johnny can tell that Kenshi is looking at him with the most surprised and reverent eyes in the universe. The kind of look that you'd get and say "fuck this stupid sword, I'd pay $3 million just to get this guy to look at me like that again."
Kenshi's mouth opens as though he's going to say something, but it shuts again before any words or sounds can come out. He opts to nod in response and Johnny takes the scabbard from off his back, holds it in his hands gently and passes it to Kenshi. Their fingertips graze one another, a way to indicate that the blind man is in the right spot. The touch sends crackles of electricity through Johnny and he wonders if Kenshi feels them too.
It's like the tattoos on Kenshi's hands are swirling around him, colors dancing in front of his eyes. It's more beautiful than any lame fucking Disney movie ever could be.
The yakuza's voice is hoarse as he says "Thanks." It's so small that Johnny can almost see it breaking in the air. He wants to put his hand on Kenshi's and tell him that things will be okay, that he's going to pay for a sight companion, any kind of corrective surgeries he wants, whatever it takes. He wants to tell him that he's still just as strong and fierce and goddamn handsome now as he was before. He wants to kiss him so fucking badly it makes his entire being ache.
He settles for saying "You're welcome," and then sitting next to Kenshi in silence.
He watches the way that he holds Sento in his hands, feels every single nick in the scabbard, every single imperfection. It's the first time in Johnny's life that he's ever wanted to be a sword and, if he keeps hanging out with Kenshi after this, (which he hopes he can), it almost certainly won't be the last.
Johnny wishes that Mileena had taken Kenshi's tear ducts with her after she'd stabbed his eyes out, because the short sad sobs that wrack through his body are almost too much to bear witness to. When he cries, it moves through his entire being. It sends a shockwave from his gut upward, makes him lurch his shoulders forward and hug himself.
"H-Hey, what's wrong?" Johnny asks. He knows it's a stupid fucking question, obviously everyone knows what's wrong, most of all the guy it happened to. But it's all he can think to ask as he watches Kenshi continue to awkwardly jerk alongside his cries.
Kenshi's head turns to face Johnny. From beyond the thin red cloth that covers his eye sockets, Johnny can feel them boring into him.
"Cage, could I touch you? I want to remember what your face looks like."
If Johnny were operating on his full mental capacity, he would probably explode at this question. He would become the fireworks they popped last night at the banquet over their heads as they feasted. He would be attached to one end of a fuse with Li Mei holding the other end, readying herself to spark it and send him to the stratosphere.
"Y-Yeah, of course you can, Ken-doll. Just make sure not to damage the goods - people pay good money for this mug to show up on their big screens."
The smugness in his voice would normally earn him a "tch" or a groan, (or an eye roll), from Kenshi. Hearing him chuckle under his breath makes his heart soar.
He turns his face toward him and waits, but no touch comes. His eyes close, he anticipates the electricity to come back... and instead he hears Kenshi clearing his throat awkwardly.
Johnny opens his eyes and finds that Kenshi's still got his hands on Sento. He tries not to be jealous of the sword again, but as with any other time he's tried not to be jealous of someone or something that has what he wants, he fails miserably.
"Could you get closer, Cage?"
"Not the first time I'm hearing that question, won't be the last. How close you need me, handsome?"
The words come out before he can even process them. Jesus Christ, is he really that much of a disaster that he can just openly call a guy he's been crushing on for at least a month handsome without even thinking about it? He's a fucking mess. His wife left him and now he doesn't know how to act. She was gonna be the only person he'd ever be able to trick into loving him and now she was gone.
"I'm going to turn, and I suggest you do the same. I want to be facing you. You can sit with your legs touching mine if it helps."
Great, now Kenshi has a colorful blindfold that also serves as a perfect swatch for the shade of red Johnny's face turns every time the man says something that's totally fucking normal for two people that are acquainted with one another.
Johnny does as he's told, because if there's one thing he's good at, it's taking directions. (Ignoring literally every single major motion picture he's ever been in, every statement he's ever made to the press after consulting his legal teams and public consultants, and generally living life up until this point.)
His knees knock against Kenshi's and it takes him aback for a second, how giddy and childish the butterflies he feels in his stomach are. Getting to know Kenshi was so simple. He wishes he had just taken a second and been less of a dickwad back when they'd first met, because maybe then it'd be easier for him to grow a pair of cajones and tell Kenshi that he doesn't spend a single night without thinking about how much he wants to trace the tattoos on his hands and arms. Maybe if he had just given Sento over, it'd be easier to admit that the low rumble of Kenshi's voice does something to stir up the pool of heat in his stomach that he thought had been long since gone after getting married to Cristal. Maybe if he hadn't tied Kenshi to one of his kitchen chairs, it'd be easier to ask him if kissing washed-up celebrities was something he'd be interested in doing.
"I'll put my hand out, you lean forward to match it."
Kenshi's palm is extended and it takes every ounce of willpower in Johnny's aching body to not press his lips against it. He leans forward until his cheek is lightly touching the yakuza's hand.
He must be hearing things, because he swears he hears Kenshi's breath hitch when they make contact for the first time. Nah, surely not. Must've been the wind.
If Kenshi's senses are heightened because of the loss of his vision, then Johnny's senses are heightened because of the gain of his touch. He purses his lips together to stop from letting out some sort of obscene sound as he feels Kenshi's hand slowly smooth over his cheek. He thanks whatever fucked up Gods exist other than Liu Kang that he finally got on that moisturizing routine that he learned off of TikTok three months ago.
As Kenshi's hand slowly feels out every angle and curve of Johnny's face, his thoughts rush a mile a minute. He wonders if he should've done a closer shave today - maybe his stubble is gonna be too sharp and it'll hurt Kenshi and leave him with little cuts or rug burn on his pretty perfect wrap-around-my-throat-please hands. He wonders if his nose is too big. He wonders if he maybe should've invested in hair plugs after that one weird SNL dropout made a comment about his weird square hairline back when he guest starred on the Comedy Central roast of Megan Fox. He wonders if his eyes are too small or too large or too close together or too far apart. He wonders if he should smile so Kenshi can feel his dimples.
"Yep, it all feels just like how I remember it. Although the stubble has gotten a little longer."
That is certainly not the answer he was expecting to hear.
His voice is small, barely there, as he chokes out his question. "You remember what I look like?"
Kenshi nods. "I do."
Johnny goes to open his mouth to ask, "Then why did you ask to touch it if you already knew?"
But then Kenshi's fingers are on his lips, tracing them with the reverence he'd have holding Sento, and for a moment, Johnny finally thinks he's better than that stupid fucking sword. His smile has the same curves, the same edges. The only difference is that Kenshi can't accidentally hurt himself this way. (He can, however, accidentally hurt Johnny. But even that would be better than the alternative, he thinks.)
Kenshi's thumb is on his bottom lip, the rest of his hand now holding Johnny's chin. If he tilts it up even one degree, Johnny thinks it'll be over for him, that he'll be kissing Kenshi before he can even think to stop himself. He'd always had poor impulse control - why else would he have spent $3 million on a fucking sword to hang up in his living room?
"These are the same, too. I'm glad you weren't hurt in the fight, Cage."
Johnny feels so fucking overwhelmed. He wants to ask so many things. First of all, what does "these are the same, too" mean? Second, why does he care about the guy who bought his fucking family heirloom and refuses to give it back? Third, why does he insist on calling him Cage like one day he won't end up calling him Johnny and breaking his heart? Fourth, what in the goddamn fuck does he mean about Johnny's fucking lips being the goddamn motherfucking same?!
Johnny decides to play it up like he always does. "Well, 'course. Gotta keep my pretty mouth. It's what makes the big bucks. I wouldn't be the same without it."
Kenshi smirks, and thank Liu Kang's weird god siblings that he's blind right now, because Johnny is beet red, mouth agape, with his eyebrows raised (and he's fairly certain that something else also rises).
"That's true. You would not be the same without that infamous mouth." Kenshi accents the compliment(?) with a playful slap to Johnny's cheek, and then his hand is withdrawn entirely, leaving an empty ghost where he should still be holding Johnny's face in his hands.
He bites back the urge to immediately ask if Kenshi wants to know just how infamous the mouth is, and settles for clearing his throat and moving back to sitting against the wall next to Kenshi.
He looks over at him after he's gotten calmed down. His heart is still jackhammering against his ribs, but as long as Kenshi can't feel his pulse, he doesn't have to know. Kenshi seems to sense Johnny's eyes on him because he turns to face him, red blindfold all that stands between the gaping holes where Kenshi's eyes used to be and Johnny's gaze full of adoration.
The yakuza grabs Sento from his lap and hands it back to Johnny.
"Thank you. I appreciate you letting me hold it. And I appreciate your help in grounding me back to reality."
Johnny nods, taking Sento back and putting it where it so wrongfully deserves to be, strapped against Johnny's sore fucking back.
"No problem. Lemme know whenever you get the urge to feel out what an Adonis looks like, I'm happy to oblige." His comment is a means to an end. He plays up the egoism to ignore the shock that courses through him as Kenshi's fingertips touch his one last time.
He resolves then and there to give Sento back as soon as they escape from here, and they will escape.
This cannot be the last time he feels Kenshi's hands on him.
Baraka whispers, about as well as he can without lips or an inside voice, "Do they not realize how much they yearn for one another?"
Kung Lao shakes his head, putting a hand on Baraka's shoulder and immediately regretting it once he feels a spike tear into his palm. "They've just gotta be stupid about it for a bit longer. They'll figure it out."
"Surely their pining has to cause some sort of agony for you as well, does it not, Earthrealmer?" Baraka looks genuinely confused, or as close to it as he can get from what Kung Lao can tell.
Kung Lao hangs his head, sighing languidly. "Of course it does. But what else am I gonna do about it? Tell them? They're not gonna believe me. Trust me, they've got to figure it out on their own time, or they never will."
And as he sees Johnny's hand inch closer to Kenshi's, finally overlapping the tattoos and interlocking their fingers, Kung Lao thinks that maybe the agony won't last much longer.

Plotting out "Rumplestiltskin" (Disney movie)
After I finished the Reinvention era, I decided I wanted to do more fleshed-out posts of original films I wish Disney had done during their previous eras. To start, I decided to work on the films suggested for the post-renaissance era, which I did a revision post that you can find here. It's best to read that to understand what I'm about to mention.
Background: By this time, Disney has not greenlit a fairy tale since the 90s, and when John Musker and Ron Clements come to them with an idea for "Rumpelstiltskin," they are open to it--albeit somewhat hesitantly; they've achieved unprecedented success with mostly original ideas, and the thought of going "back to basics" does bother them somewhat, with the fear that they'll be attacked for running out of ideas. Nonetheless, they let the film pass, scrapping their "Home on the Range" film. They enlist Alan Menken and Tim Rice for the music, and the team opts for a darker take than most Disney films (later said to have inspired Guillermo del Toro), and they consider briefly to do a non-European setting, but it's quickly scrapped, and a medieval England is considered, with particular inspiration from the Late Middle Ages to the Tudor period. While the specific setting and historical aspects (including pitches for Scandinavian, Slavic, Brazilian, and Iberian settings) are eventually removed for "magical purposes," Tudor-inspired fashion (eh, more 40% accuracy than 100%) is kept. They realize the unlikeability of having a king who marries a woman he threatens to kill three times over, and it's not a desirable trait for marketing, so they take influence from the king in "Cinderella," King Hubert from "Sleeping Beauty," and King Triton from "The Little Mermaid" to make a well-meaning but stressed and temperamental king who offers his much more benevolent son to the protagonist. They also scrap an early draft featuring a love triangle between the protagonist, the prince, and the antagonist, and the thought of doing 3D is considered, but eventually passed on. They planned on making the protagonist "older" (somewhere in her 30s), but Disney worries that this would alienate their younger audience, and move her to mid-20s--a bit older than they'd like, but not too young to be a mother without upsetting the parental audience.
(Note: This film will have been released in 2004, but several visual aids used are from media post-2004 and are serve to give the audience the idea of how the characters would look/act, rather than the influences Disney would use in the early 2000s.)
Plot
In a faraway land, a kingdom is wrought with misfortune. It is heavily in debt after a war has drained their coffers, and the economy has eroded. They're in debt to other countries, and not repaying them risks another way, and raising taxes could lead to civil war. A noble brags that his daughter will bring all the kingdom's problem to an end by turning straw into gold, and when the ill-tempered king hears of this, he gives her an ultimatum: spin several pounds of straw into gold for three days straight and marry his son, or her father will be executed for his insolence and she will be imprisoned for fraud. She undertakes this task successfully and falls in love with the much more amiable prince, and years later, she gives birth to a child. The day the child is to be christened, a guest bursts in, reminding her of a "deal" they made, revealing they spun straw into gold in exchange for gifts from her, the final of which being her child. When the princess begs to be let out of the deal, the creature humors her with a game: find their child, and discover the creature's name. With that, the fiend and her child disappears, and the princess only has 3 days to save them.
Characters
Aurelia--A quiet young noblewoman who lived a naive and sheltered life due to her upbringing, she was taught to be quiet and demure, and her station gave her a fairy tale look on life until she too was struck by poverty. Her father is an advantageous man whose kindness in these circumstances has been pushed down and seen as a sign of weakness. He had tried to suggest a match between Aurelia and Prince Aldous before, but was unsuccessful until he felt pressure by his contemporaries to brag about why his daughter deserved to marry the prince. When her father is threatened with death should she fail, she makes a deal with a mysterious creature that appears each night to spin gold with her, though they only tell her what they want after they do a day's work. In doing so, she gives up two things her deceased mother gave her that she promised never to give up: a necklace and a ring. But true to her word, she does, and she is horrified to realize a potential child is the price to be paid for a third night. When her son Caspian is kidnapped, she races to the far reaches of the country, following clues to the creature's hideout and their true name.
R--Hint, hint. People are always willing to make deals when they're desperate, yet they don't know what the price will be. No matter. R is quite a vicious fellow (or lady? Their form and associated pronouns change to fit the ocassion) who's all too happy to take advantage of the ocassion. Disney took the opportunity to make the shapeshifter's disguises appear as twisted parodies of iconic Disney characters, along with original designs. R is endlessly imposing and clever, managing to finagle Aurelia out of a necklace that tracks whoever she wants and a ring that can summon creatures to assist her--but since she had no idea about the true nature of these items, the only loss she felt from handing them over was of a sentimental nature. But now that they're in R's possession, they're able to not only track Aurelia's progress, but hinder it as well. Should she fail to find and name R in three days time, Caspian will become corrupted in R's domain and be their "son" forevermore. Tick tock, tick, tock...
Aldous--The crown prince of Sceptimar and the oldest of three brothers, he has to deal with his overbearing father's expectations. After the death of his mother, he sought to get away from home and was educated abroad, and both situations contributed to his father's bitter and controlling attitude. He is sympathetic to Aurelia's situation, though is not pleased that his hand is offered as a prize in exchange for her success. Similar to his bride, he starts off as superficially kind, good at keeping up appearances and saying nice things, but when he joins his wife on retrieving their child, his compassion becomes genuine, and his grief helps him develop sympathy and empathy for others. That said, he hasn't completely lost his sense of haughtiness, but most say his demeanor contributes to his charm, in proper doses. His cleverness compliments Aurelia's, and his physical abilities (fighting, horseback riding, etc.) rubs off on her. To put it simply, what was once a "reward marriage" became a relationship where both parties help them become better people. Before Caspian was kidnapped, Aurelia feared Aldous would become controlling similar to his father.
Songs
Sacrifice--The story of how Sceptimar, once a prosperous kingdom, fell into disrepair thanks to continuous war, and was financially bankrupt, and King Osric hoped to marry his sons off to powerful princesses in exchange for a significant dowries.
Golden Opportunity--Lord Ricard is quick to fold to pressure, but when his contemporaries turn their annoyance at the king considering raising taxes on him, he makes a reckless brag that his daughter has been blessed with the ability to spin straw into gold, and they relay this to the king, not believing him.
Don't You?--In despair, Aurelia prepares to be imprisoned for life, but laments the possible death of her father, and a creature hears her praise, appearing and offering to help her three days in a row. Each day they finish a task, they ask her for something, to which she hesitates, and they remind her that they can expose her at any moment, and it will be her fault at this point if her father is executed.
Something For Me--Aurelia must venture to find Caspian before he is corrupted by R, and prince Aldous joins her to help rescue their child. R scoffs at their urge to make deals, as Aurelia already agreed to the original terms of the deals and they had no reason to bargain further with her. But they do have some magical items that Aurelia so graciously gave them, so it's not like they won't win this game anyway.
Life Without--Aurelia and Aldous lament on their childhood and situations that led them to their current predicament, with each of them blaming the other's father for their situation. That said, they've developed a deep love for each other, and they've gained so much from their union, not least of all a child that they adore above all else.
Who Are You (with "Don't You" reprise)--Based on the hints that they've left behind (and an accidental one), Aurelia is able to deduce R's true identity as well Aldous finding Caspian hidden in the domain. R, despite their rage, is bound to the last deal they made, and relinquishes the child to the prince and princess. But they warn the couple that this isn't goodbye; anytime someone is desperate, anytime someone wants something, Rumpelstiltskin will be there to grant their deepest desire.
Hope you enjoyed this! Lemme know if you have any questions. Technically the next original film from my revision of the post-renaissance era is "The Chronicles of Narnia," but it'd pretty much be the same as the live-action film, just animated and a musical, so IDK if I'll post it. So that probably means I'll just move onto "Tam Lin."

In Cinderella Tales From Around the World, I've now reached the tales from Sweden and Norway.
*In many of these variants, just like in many versions from Great Britain and Ireland and some from Denmark, the Cinderella character is a princess by birth, and her stepmother is a queen. At first it seemed strange to me that a princess should be forced to clean, cook, and pasture animals, when royalty should have servants for those things. But then I remembered Disney's Snow White and how the wicked Queen forces Snow White to work as a scullery maid. In fairy tales, that sort of thing can happen.
*Whether there are two stepsisters or one can vary, though most often there's just one. But in all these versions, the heroine's abusers are a stepmother and stepsisters – neither Sweden nor Norway seems to have variants where she's abused by her biological family.
*In a few Swedish versions, the heroine is known as "Crow-Cloak," because her stepfamily forces her to wear a cloak of crow feathers. But in most others, as in other countries, she has a nickname related to cinders or ashes.
*The heroine's helpers in the Swedish versions come in a wide variety: a pike in a well, an ermine, an old man, a bird, a black ox, a midwife, a mountain troll, or even a magical apple, pear, and plum.
*The theme of the heroine being ordered to sort or prepare peas or grain, and her helper doing it for her, reappears in several versions.
*Almost all Swedish and Norwegian versions have the heroine go to church in her finery, not a ball or festival. Just one Swedish version, Askungen, has a ball instead, and that version seems heavily influenced by Perrault, because so far it's the only other version I've seen with a pumpkin transformed into a coach (along with rats into horses and caterpillars into footmen), and one of the very few where she has to leave by midnight.
*As in the Danish versions, the heroine usually says "Light before! Darkness behind!" to prevent anyone from following her from home to church or vice-versa.
*The theme of the stepsister(s) cutting her/their feet to make the shoe fit, but a bird revealing the trick, is once again constant.
*Several different Norwegian variants are called Kari Woodencloak, or in some English translations, Katie Woodencloak. As her name implies, this Cinderella figure does her dirty work wearing a dress made from boards of wood.
**The most famous of these versions, the one collected by Peter Christen Asbjørnsen and Jørgen Moe, is another variation on the "abused stepdaughter runs away with her magical bull" theme. Kari is a princess whose wicked queen stepmother tries to starve her, but the bull magically feeds her each day, until the stepmother finds out and plans to kill the bull, so they flee. The bull is forced to fight three trolls, which leaves him gravely wounded, and he implores Kari to kill him, then lay his skin under a stone. Sadly she obeys, and from then on whenever she knocks on that stone, her wishes are granted. The story then, of course, becomes a Donkeyskin/All-Kinds-of-Fur variant as she becomes a scullery maid at the castle of the prince, who treats her scornfully, only to fall in love with her when she comes to church dressed in magical finery.
***There are Swedish variants almost identical to this one too. Although they don't include the wooden dress, and in one of them, the bull is replaced by a white bear.
**There are other, simpler Kari Woodencloak tales too, though. One is like Cinderella meets Puss in Boots: Kari is a peasant girl who inherits only a pet cat when her parents die, so she and the cat set out to seek their fortune, she becomes a castle scullery maid, and the cat becomes her helper, hunting animals and selling them to the king, then using the money to buy finery for Kari. Others are standard Cinderella tales where Kari doesn't leave home, but simply slaves for her stepmother; in one of these, she gets her finery from a mysterious hill where disembodied voices speak, and another is like a simplified version of Asbjørnsen and Moe's, where the stepmother kills Kari's bull and Kari then gets her finery from his grave.
*There are many other Norwegian variants too. The heroine's various helpers in these versions include her mother's spirit, a bird, several birds, a mysterious old woman from inside a hill, or a fairy who appears from inside a lime tree and calls herself "the lime tree queen." (In virtually all the Scandinavian versions that include a magical tree, it's a lime tree, just like it's usually a hazel tree in Germany.)
*In some Norwegian versions, the stepmother is a sorceress who magically imprisons the father and forces him to marry her against his will at the beginning.
*At least two Norwegian versions continue after the heroine's marriage; her stepsister throws her into the sea and takes her place, but she comes back in the form of a duck, and her husband eventually breaks the spell.
Next stops: Finland, Estonia, and Russia.

Her parents were personal “wish-granters” to the royal court and would preside over christenings, birthdays, and other such important events. Due to her parent’s high ranking position, Stella was able to grow up alongside the royal family and even grow attached to them! Stella’s life took a turn for a worse one day when she was out taking a walk in the forest. An unprompted battle suddenly began just where Stella was walking and thus she got stuck in the crossfire. Stella was then knocked out due to a spell directed at her head and was sent into a deep slumber. Not knowing what to do with her seemingly lifeless body, those in the battle decided to leave her in a cave for the time being. Many years passed before Stella finally woke up one day. Waking up in this small cave caused Stella to panic which thankfully caught the attention of a passerby who got her out of the cave. Deciding to return to her parents, she learned that many years had in fact passed, Stella was unsure what to do with her time. In the end, Stella decided to attend NRC of which she was planning of going to before her little “accident.” At NRC, she was sorted into the dorm Pomfiore. At NRC, she built up a reputation of wish-granting and seemingly being able to grant any wish.

i am planning on seeing the little mermaid this week sometime, so, my current ranking of the live-action disney remakes that i've seen, to be updated following:
01. cinderella. god's perfect faery tale movie. it's so beautiful-looking, and -sounding. it's brilliantly cast. it adapted things like the mice in cute ways that weren't distractions or CGI abominations. (that said, my unpopular opinion about this movie is that the dress transformation moment actually *does* look a little too CGI for me. it could have looked WAY more interesting.) it expanded on the story without needing to act like cinderella and her prince were idiots, and most importantly, it does not treat people who enjoy this story like idiots, either.
02. maleficent. the codifier! the risk-taker! it's linda woolverton with the steel chair! the only time disney has put a Twist into one of these that WORKED and didn't feel like dumb fucking around with the audience because THE HEART IS THERE. the cursing at the christening is a perfect illustration of how *good* these movies can be when they want to at honoring what came before and literally bringing it to life. that scene gives me chills every time.
03. the sorcerer's apprentice. this counts as a disney live-action remake. to me. this is a very silly movie and i wish there were five sequels and a balthazar blake meet at disneyland.
04. aladdin and alice in wonderland occupy a deadlocked middle ground for me. i enjoy them a lot and it's clear they were made with care and love by people who wanted to try something a little creative and different, and not just as soulless cash grabs by The Rat. but the execution still leaves things to be desired. why must the hatter be so goddamn annoying? why the Girl Power clichés? WHY DID YOU FIGURATIVELY AND LITERALLY DEFANG JAFAR?
05. dumbo. it tried. i can never decide if i think dumbo looks charming or terrible and the plot was insanely contrived but, hey. i love circuses and i whooped out loud when i saw the map beginning in sarasota, florida. colin farrell did NOT have to put his whole heart into this movie but god bless the man for it.
06. the jungle book. it was fine, and far be it from me to look a gift tiger voiced by idris elba in the mouth. but this was not necessary.
07. alice through the looking-glass. points for alice's dope chinese court outfit and the, what, sixty seconds featuring richard armitage and rhys ifans. demerits for literally everything else. possibly unfair to class this with the others since it's technically not a live-action remake but a sequel to one.
08. 101 dalmatians. even as a kid i thought it was silly that this movie got made, and i just don't find cruella very funny in this. plus i get annoyed every time i see that take about how she says SUCH feminist things.
09. beauty and the beast. how 'bout that dan stevens done up full rococo dandy? that's all i've got.

Narumayo Week Day 6: Domestic/Intimacy
Trucy wanted to stay up to see the ball drop, and she wasn’t going to take no for an answer. As many times as Phoenix tried to explain that it wasn’t healthy for a nine-year-old to be staying up, she’d always have the perfect response about cultural experiences being good for her mental health. Maya had no idea where Trucy had learned these terms or if she actually understood what they meant, but she couldn’t help but snicker at Phoenix being out-lawyered by his own daughter.
Eventually, after much back and forth and reassurances from Maya that they’d get the girls to sleep as soon as they hit the New Year, Phoenix relented. Now, several hours and a few Disney movies later, it was less than ten minutes to midnight. She and Phoenix sat next to each other on their newly christened couch(and newly stained with the evening’s pasta sauce), with Pearl and Trucy on their laps, both desperately straining to keep awake.
“How much longer, Mystic Maya?” Pearl yawned. She’d been especially excited for tonight, having spent all her previous New Year’s Eves in Kurain, far away from the fireworks displays of the city.
“Just a few minutes, Pearly,” Maya responded, stroking her cousin’s hair. She glanced over at Phoenix, who gave her a warm smile. Trucy was sitting on his leg, trapped in a constant cycle of nodding off and snapping away. On the TV the usual ballyhoo on the other side of the country was unfolding, although they’d turned the volume way down to just enjoy each other’s presence.
Maya loved this, she really did. Growing up, it had really just been her and Mia, two sisters against the world, off in their far away mountain kingdom. She’d always dreamed about living like the big, happy families in her picture books. And now here she was, without even planning it, smack dab in the middle of a beautiful family, experiencing their first New Year as a foursome.
There was some selfish part of her that wished that the girls could have already been asleep, though. That it could just be her and Phoenix snuggling on the couch, drinking lots of champagne, sharing that first New Year’s kiss that romcoms had drilled into her head was of vital importance to a young relationship.
Pearl and Trucy didn’t even know that they were together yet, and she and Phoenix had been having a tough time deciding when and how to let them know. Honestly, Maya felt like the hardest part would be preparing their eardrums for the high-pitched squeals that were sure to come out of the girls’ mouths when they found out. She felt a big smile growing on her face just thinking about it.
“Hey Maya, don’t you think we should start pouring the grape juice for the New Year?” Phoenix said to her with a twinkle in his eye. Trucy and Pearl perked right up at the notion of juice.
“You mean the juice in the kitchen?” Maya asked, starting to catch on to what he was saying.
“Yeah, do you think you can give me a hand pouring it while the girls wait patiently in the living room?"
“Sure, Nick,” she looked down at Pearl and Trucy, “Do you girls think you can hold down the fort while we’re in there?”
Pearl nodded and Trucy gave a big salute, which made Maya laugh. Carefully, she and Phoenix took the girls off their laps and got up, with him turning the TV volume up just a bit.
“Remember to let us know when the countdown gets close to zero, okay?”
“You got it, Daddy!”
With that, the adults fled into the office apartment’s cramped little kitchen. It wasn’t the most intimate space, but it at least gave them a little time alone. Maya glomped right onto Phoenix as he brought two bottles down and four glasses down from the cupboard.
“That’s my Nick, grabbing stuff from the top shelf like a pro.”
“You know that’s not that much of a feat for most people, right?”
“Shut it, dummy. I’m normal sized, it’s the world that’s freakishly tall.”
Phoenix chuckled, and leaned down to give her a kiss, emphasizing the height difference. He handed her a bottle, getting to work on pouring champagne for the two of them with the other.
“It doesn’t bother you that you’re serving alcohol to minors?” she said as she eyeballed the glasses to make sure the amount in each was even.
“What do you mean? The kids are getting sparkling grape juice.”
“Uh, Nick, you know I don’t turn 21 until April right? I know I seem so elegant and mature that it’s hard to tell.”
“Huh, you know, I honestly completely forgot.”
“Well, unfortunately for you you’re a criminal now. Hope you know a good lawyer.”
The pouring done, Phoenix grabbed her around the waist and gave her a big kiss. Maya found herself unconsciously lifting her leg behind her.
“I still can’t believe we waited so long,” she breathed out after they finished.
“I still can’t believe we haven’t told Trucy and Pearl yet.”
“We’ll let them know. Soon. Let’s have this night for ourselves, though.”
“I’d rather have the whole next year.”
Maya stood there, savoring this moment in which all that seemed to exist in the world were his big blue eyes. She bit her lip and stood up on her tiptoes to reach his lips again. None of this leaning over stuff for her.
Suddenly, a shriek rang out, so high that Maya wasn’t sure Phoenix’s old man ears would even be able to pick up on it. They turned to see Pearl standing in the doorway, a look of pure delight on her face.
“I knew it! I knew it I knew it I knew it!” she screamed, jumping up and down so fast that she threatened to rock the whole building. Trucy soon came up behind her, a big smile on her face as well.
Maya turned back to Phoenix, a look of amused acceptance on his face.
“You were right all along, Pearls,” he said warmly, “We really are special someones.”
In the other room Maya could hear the TV host du jour counting down more and more excitedly. She closed her eyes for a second, thinking about all that had happened over the past year, all the triumphs and all the tragedies, all the memories they’d shared as the growing family they were. And most of all she thought of what Mia might think if she saw them now, her kid sister and her dopey protege, soulmates all along.
As the big crowd on the TV screamed “one” in unison, and as the sound of fireworks began to shriek through the skies of Los Angeles, Maya closed the gap between her lips and Phoenix’s.
She would make sure they had the whole next year.

Day 1:
Previously On PRSC...
Five clueless bands have entered an unknown wood in Scotland claimed as "The Arena"
They're not quite sure how they got there and they’re pretty cold (especially Peter Gabriel who decided to wear only a tight, black bodysuit)
Death count: 0
AAAAAaaaaand on with the game!
After hours of bickering following the revelation that this is NOT a “nature retreat”, Yes have finally unanimously agreed to settle in a small clearing in the south of the arena. This is due to Jon’s connection to the ‘pretty view’. They are currently trying (and failing) to light the all-important first fire. Chris and Rick are crowded around what will be the centre of their campsite with two small rocks attempting to make a spark. It’s not particularly successful so far. The last remains of summer’s fruit are left on the early autumn vegetation so Jon goes on a mission gathering this valuable food into his only possession in the arena, his small thatch basket. Steve is mainly wishing for home, security and structure (unlikely Stevie!). They are making slow but evident pro(g)gress...
Further North...
Further up the same side of the river, Emerson Lake and Palmer (or as the fans call them, E L P) still haven’t decided on a camp location (but have decided on some mildly camp outfits). This is mainly due to their tendency to...errm...piss about. They have mainly been doing absolutely nothing but arguing for the last few hours, with it being difficult to tell what it's really about. Keith is currently trying to explain the drum part of Karn-Evil 9 to Carl (he still doesn’t get it. It's like this only in the woods):
To The East...
Genesis are...managing. It is obvious that Peter (Their esteemed vocalist) has either developed acute frostbite or doesn’t quite realise the gravity of the bands’ predicament. He is quite enjoying prancing around what we will christen after the beloved Genesis song (and actual forest), "Epping Forest", occasionally putting on various pieces of Headwear. Tony Banks is pretty much refusing to do anything, making his Tony face (you know the one) and focusing on his Etch-a-Sketch on which he has decided to recreate the Mona Lisa from memory. He is obviously pretty unimpressed by the situation and more importantly, Peter’s ridiculous behaviour. Steve, Mike and Phil on the other hand are getting their hands dirty, (successfully) making a fire and creating basic shelters for the band in the form of a cosy, semi-waterproofed den within the branches of a collapsed tree.
Somewhere else...
Rush are doing a frankly smashing job. They are fewer in numbers to most of the other bands and are outliers in their nationality, but have far more team strength and spirit (plus the camping gear helped!). All the guys are working together in perfect harmony. Neil oversees heavy lifting and jobs that need strength and commitment, Alex is in charge of fishing and cooking, and Geddy does all the important gathering (wood and possibly dangerous wild mushrooms). By the end of the day, we suspect the band will have something together and defined in the arena. Good job, Rush!
And Finally, Keeping Their Distance Across the River…
Robert Fripp has pretty much forced the other members of King Crimson to settle far North at the top of the river, away from the interference of others. Here he will establish a camp he refers to as, "The Court of the Crimson King" (God, he’s pretentious). He’s taking a “somewhat” autocratic approach to leading the others. It's working to an extent but John and David are angry that they weren’t in fact going to Disney World as he had promised, and what else would one expect?? Fire and basic shelter have (reluctantly) been built.
That’s all for today, so we’ll see you tomorrow for...
The Prog Rock Survival Competition!

Idea!!!!!
I've been watching episodes of an art video series by YouTuber Mei Yu called "Hero & Villain Role Swap" and got an idea.
Disney Villains as allies to the main heroes.
Here's a run down of the au:
Alice arrives in Wonderland and meets the Four Card Queens; Queen Greta Von Spade of Spades, Queen Anya Clubinova of Clubs, Queen Marianne le Rouge of Diamonds, and Queen Elizabeth de Corazon of Hearts. The four queens warn Alice to stay as far away from the Chesslands which is the home of the White and Black Chess Kingdoms.
Scar is captain of the lion guard and is devoted to protecting not only his family but the Pridelands. His guard include Bongo the Water buffalo, Sheba the Cheetah, and the hyenas named Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed. He also recruits Timon and Pumbaa and sends them to an oasis in case something happens. A small pack of hyenas led by a hyena named Jezebel nearly kills Simba and Nala. The attempted assassination was set up by a lioness named Athaliah, who wants to make Scar king and become his queen. After Mufasa dies and Simba runs away to Timon and Pumbaa's oasis, Scar steps up as king and takes a mate in Zira who already has birthed Nuka and Vitani.
Ursula is the elder sister to King Triton and when Ariel goes to her for help, Ursula does so. However, she warns her niece to be careful as Lady Levinthea, an evil sea witch, wants to take over both land and sea.
Jafer is the surrogate uncle of Aladdin and the former vizier of King Kasim of Baghdad. However, Ahab, a lower-ranked adviser to the Sultan of Agribah, wants to take over and marry Princess Jasmine. Of course, Aladdin goes to find the Genie and wishes to look like a prince. (Plot twist: Aladdin IS a prince; the prince of Baghdad, in fact.)
Queen Grimhilde is protecting her stepdaughter Snow White from Snow's evil uncle, Duke Karl. When the duke starts showing an interest in the young princess, Grimhilde sends a huntsman to take Snow White into the forest. After Snow flees, the huntsman kills a wild pig and places it's heart into an ornate box to give to the queen. Duke Karl discovers the trick and goes for the old "If You Want Something Done Right, Do It Yourself" trick.
Hades learns that Eris, goddess of discord, wants to rule Olympus and wishes to free the titans to do it. Telling Zeus about the plot, Hades requests to pretend to be on Eris's side and send Hercules to Earth under the influence of a potion that would make the child semi-mortal.
Maleficent was invited by her old friend King Stephen to the christening of Princess Aurora. However, a dark fae called Belladonna grows jealous and curses the princess. Maleficent, along with Flora, Fauna, and Maryweather, hide Aurora in the woods.
Judge Claude Frollo is secretly helping gypsies to hide from Judge Roquet. When Frollo is helping another group of gypsies, Roquet appears and frightens off a young mother. Frollo catches up and reassures her that she will be safe. In thanks, she begs Frollo to care for her disfigured son, who he names Quasimodo.
~~~
If anyone has any ideas how other movies would work out, please reblog with a short description or vignette.
Hmm, any hot takes on old old Disney, something like Sleeping Beauty?
You've stumbled upon a favourite of mine.
Okay, so, I love Sleeping Beauty. I don't understand the criticism around it. OR why they had to try and girlboss it up in that horrible Maleficent thing they did (I stopped watching halfway through). It's just such an interesting movie to me.
First off, the visuals? Beautiful. I love the art style. I love the squares, I love the muted colours. I love how the characters are drawn and Aurora's whole everything. I love how they animated her dancing and her round fringe. She looks great, so well done to those animators.
I feel like we should do this in chronological order so let's start with the old storybook thing at the start. It's great. It's a homage to the fact that this is not an original idea. That Disney is merely retelling it, it's not the one and only and it's a story. It's great. Also, the book detail is so pretty. I was ecstatic when I saw Disney had released a notebook that was the old Sleeping Beauty book. I had to have it.
Moving onto the movie. Aurora. I love that she's named after the goddess of the dawn. It's so interesting because the goddess Aurora also has a tragic life. She falls in love with a mortal who is granted a wish. He wishes for immortality to spend his life with Aurora but he didn't wish for eternal youth, meaning he ages and ages and never dies and it's just so tragic. It's also a story of time passing, which mirrors the story of sleeping beauty. Philip is aging and adventuring while Aurora is frozen in this eternally youthful sleep. Very symbolic. Props to whoever named her Aurora.
Also she was born at dawn, how cute is that for a homage to the goddess Aurora.
Onto her name day (christening?) So, little Philip. His name is very interesting because it means horse loving or fond of horses and he's fond of his horse in this film. like he talks to his horse. He's a horse girl at heart. I like how they show him being a kid. No love at first sight. He sees this baby and is like, yuk, what is that? He's even more horrified at the thought that he might have to marry her someday. This is great because it doesn't set up that they're destined to be together. Like he's literally a kid here and it's good. I liked it. I also like that he's in red, that's his colour, that's how we know it's him. Red= danger, passion, love. All of which he goes through in this film.
Let's push Philip to the side and focus on the fairies. So, the girlies arrive and we have Flora, Fauna and Merriweather. Again, lovely names. Their colours are interesting too. Red, again, for Flora. Then there's green, but it's a very natural green so we associate her with nature. Then there's the blue, again, the colour of the sky, very natural very good. They're all quite nice colours, not too harsh on the eyes. Their gifts are interesting too. They give Aurora grace, joy, a musical voice, beauty and a serene temperament. Basically making her into the perfect girl. They want her to have an easy life so they give her gifts to help her. I like that they're there too. It shows that the royal family hold them in high esteem. Or they hold the fae court in high esteem. They're on good terms, they've been invited to bless the new princess.
Which makes me question Maleficent. What is their relation to her? I think it's interesting that she expected an invite, which she rightfully should have had. She's about the same level of fae as the three fairy godmothers. Maybe even higher. She should have been invited whether she was in the bad fae court or not. The fact that she wasn't just tells me that the royal family was maybe asking for trouble. After all, they're familiar with the fae court, they know not to mess with them. So why would they snub this high up fae? Could there be history (I'm not even thinking about Maleficent, don't even try and bring this up with me) maybe with the other three fae who might have told the royal family not to invite her?
Who knows. Either way, she does kind of have a point when she curses Aurora. I'm not condoning it, but, again, the royal family should have thought this through.
Anyway, we're in the woods and we're back with Philip. It's interesting that it's one of the fairies gifts that attracts Philip. Remember they gave Aurora that lovely voice. They're the reason Philip hears her and wants to speak to her. They're the reason they're discovered. Irony? Yes.
Also can we talk about her name Briar Rose? Love that. Mainly because the reason Philip has such a hard time getting to Aurora is because he has to cut through thorns later in the movie. Thorns that could be from Rose plants.
Poetic.
Also, Philip deserves his happy ending. He didn't marry Aurora because he had to. He met her, not knowing who she was, fell in love with her and married her for who she was. People saying it was too fast. You don't know that. You don't know how much time passed between Aurora waking up and them getting married. It could have been months, a year. We don't know. It's ambiguous.
Either way, Philip goes to hell and back to free Aurora. He fights chaos itself and restores order once more.
Also, if we can circle back to Aurora. The fact she pricks her finger on a spinning wheel? I love it. It's such a mundane tool. It's a tool she, a princess, might never have had to use, and yet her parents feared so much for her life that she was sent away and all the spindles destroyed. Yet the curse still prevailed. The magic created one. Her curse is inevitable. No matter what they did, no matter where she was, that curse would have got her. It just shows that nature, that the faes, are stronger than anything man could do.
It's great.
I just. I love this movie.
Rpg Anon: I've been a bit relatively moody lately and that's why I haven't done the class 77 Personas research lately. I still intend on doing it but still. Regardless, mod, if you have the time, what Personas do you imagine Makoto's class to have?
We already established Sayaka to have Miss Crane/The Crane Wife and Sakura to have Hercules but any thoughts you have of everyone else? Class 78 so far has the themes of their Personas not particularly being gods but more characters of popular stories and folklore.
P.s. if you want to give Kyoko Sherlock Holmes than you're gonna have to justify it cuz that's a bit too easy and direct.
//Hey, so I'm really sorry I got late to this. I'm sorry you've had some rough days and I apologize for not getting to this sooner.
//And then when I tried to do it last night, my internet provider went down right in the middle of it, so that pissed me off as you might imagine.
//It just took me a while to think about it, but I do think I've got some answers. Note that I'm not completely sure about all of them, I decided a lot of these based on the theme of, as you said, popular stories and characters from folklore.
//I'll try my best to explain each one.
Makoto - Antar: Antarah ibn Shaddad al-Absi, also known as Antar, was a pre-Islamic African-Arab knight and poet, famous for both his poetry and his adventurous life. I'm very wishy-washy on this one, but ultimately I focused on the fact that he started out as a slave before he became a knight, channeling his hopes and dreams to reach where he got to.
Sayaka - The Crane Wife: For reasons we have already established. However, I do wish it had a better, or more official name.
Junko - Nyarlathotep: A fictional character created by H. P. Lovecraft. The character is a malign deity in the Cthulhu Mythos, a shared universe. First appearing in Lovecraft's 1920 prose poem "Nyarlathotep", he was later mentioned in other works by Lovecraft and by other writers. He is also the main antagonist of Persona 1 and 2, and was picked for reasons already established.
Hina - Maximus: Maximus Decimus Meridius was the commander of the Armies of the North and the Felix Legions under the Roman Empire. The greatest general of Rome during the 2nd century AD, he served loyally under Emperor Marcus Aurelius during his Twelve Year Campaign against the Germanic tribes at Vindobona in Germania. I picked this one because he's also the main character of the film Gladiator, a film about warrior sports, which fits Hina's sport related talent, her competitive nature, and her determination to see things through to the end. That said, this is by far the one I am the most unsure of, and wouldn't mind a second opinion.
Chihiro - Mulan: A legendary folk heroine from the Northern and Southern dynasties era of Chinese history. According to legend, Mulan took her aged father's place in the conscription for the army by disguising herself as a man. While I do think there could be alternatives, I ultimate focused on the similarity between Mulan and Chihiro's stories, where they disguise themselves as the opposite gender. Mulan does so to protect others while Chihiro did to protect himself, but ultimate came into his own to embrace his identity.
Sakura - Hercules: For reasons established. The strongest man in history serving as the Persona of the strongest woman in the world.
Toko - Maleficent: In PToH Toko obviously has Barrow, but that's more to fit with Komaru and them being a duo. In an alternative world, this Persona is based on a fictional character who appears as the main antagonist in Walt Disney Productions' 16th animated feature film, Sleeping Beauty (1959). She is represented as an evil fairy and the self-proclaimed "Mistress of All Evil" who, after not being invited to a christening, curses the infant Princess Aurora to "prick her finger on the spindle of a spinning wheel and die" before the sun sets on Aurora's sixteenth birthday. However, more recent iterations of her character, such as her 2014 standalone movie puts the character into a much different light, revealing that she was once a kind-hearted fairy, who is deceived by the love of her life, Stefan; Aurora's father, and she places a curse on her in order to exact revenge. This is similar to how Toko spent a lot of her young childhood being kicked down, manipulated, hurt and betrayed by everyone, which led to the birth of her vengeful and psychotic alter ego, Genocide Jack.
Celeste - Jeanne d'Arc: A patron saint of France, honored as a defender of the French nation for her role in the siege of Orléans and her insistence on the coronation of Charles VII of France during the Hundred Years' War. Claiming to be acting under divine guidance, she became a military leader who transcended gender roles and gained recognition as a savior of France. Celeste (at least in the dub) poses as a French girl for the majority of her time in the game, and has a very similar empowaring, intellectual, yet also spiteful nature to Jeanne d'Arc.
Hifumi - Māui: A great culture hero and trickster in Polynesian mythology. Tales of Māui's exploits and adventures are told throughout most of Polynesia; they can be traced back as far west as islands off New Guinea. Some exploits common to most Polynesian traditions are stealing fire for humans from the underworld, fishing up islands with his magical hook, and capturing the Sun to lengthen the days. He's the kind of hero and righteous person Hifumi aspires to be, though the demigod is also a trickster, which can hint to how he can be sinister when he needs to be. Honestly not totally sure about this one either though, I'm just spitting.
Kyoko - Robin Hood: No, I didn't go for Sherlock, as obvious as it is. A famous English outlaw usually associated with the motto "Steal from the rich, give to the poor". According to legend, he was a highly skilled archer and swordsman. Robin Hood is also the initial Persona of Goro Akechi from Persona 5, who is also a detective. Though Robin Hood is a fake Persona used to mask Akechi's true sinister nature, Kyoko has no such sinister nature, and her sense of justice and nature of finding the truth and exposing the corruption, despair and lies, is genuine, and this Persona makes sense. Plus, I kind of really want to see a female version of Persona's Robin Hood, since I love it's design.
Mondo - Leonidas: a king of the Greek city-state of Sparta, and the 17th of the Agiad line, a dynasty which claimed descent from the mythical demigod Heracles. Leonidas entered myth as a hero and the leader of the 300 Spartans. The 300 Spartans and their successes served as my main reason to give this to Mondo, as they're a very similar concept to the Crazy Diamond Biker Gang that he leads.
Taka - Odysseus: In Greek and Roman mythology Odysseus is a legendary Greek king of Ithaca and the hero of Homer's epic poem the Odyssey. He was also the original creator of the infamous Trojan Horse. I picked this because it relates to Taka's desire to be a leader, a public figure, a hero, and someone people can depend on.
Byakuya - Arthur: Legendary British warlord/king said to have united the Britons against the Germanic invaders, with the support of the Knights of Camelot. He is also the protagonist of a folk tale where he pulls a sword from a stone, which decides his fate to be the newest English king. This is primarily why I picked this, as whether it was through fate or effort, Byakuya views himself as a chosen one, and that he earned the right to stand above everybody.
Leon - Siegfried: The legendary dragon-slaying hero in Nibelungenlied from German mythology. Both characters share the trait of being heroic figures who have accomplished greatness, but died as a result of their own misgivings as opposed to in battle or elsewhere better. Honestly, this one is a stretch though, so I wouldn't mind a second opinion.
Mukuro - Yog-Sothoth: A fictional cosmic entity and Outer God created by H. P. Lovecraft. He, like Nyarlathotep, Junko's Persona, is a core part of the Cthulhu Mythos (which Lovecraft would refer to facetiously as "Yog-Sothothery"). Born of the Nameless Mist, he is the progenitor of Cthulhu, Hastur the Unspeakable, and the ancestor of the Voormi. Though not siblings, both Nyarlathotep and Yog-Sothoth are offsprings of Azathoth, creating a familial connection between Junko and Mukuro's Persona's, but still having Junko be the more superior of the two.
Hiro - Twm Siôn Cati: a figure in Welsh folklore, known for being robber and trickster, nicknamed the Welsh Wizard. The character has many tall tales, and the Welsh Wizard title is in reference to both Hiro's scamming money-grubbing nature, his susceptibility to fall for traps and misadventures, and his talent of a fortune teller, which is mystical in it's own way.
//Again, a lot of these need work, I'm really unsure about most of them, but I am equally as proud of some of them.
Jordin Sparks Sings National Anthem for Disney Treasure Maiden Voyage
Grammy-nominated singer Jordin Sparks brought her powerful vocals to the christening ceremony of the Disney Treasure cruise ship on March 1st, 2024. Sparks sang a stirring rendition of "The Star-Spangled Banner" as the highlight of the event, which marked the inaugural launch of Disney Cruise Line's newest ship from Port Canaveral." I'm thrilled to be here celebrating the maiden voyage of the Disney Treasure," said Sparks in an interview before her performance. "Disney has always held such a special place in my heart, so to be a part of this major milestone for them is an incredible honor." Sparks took the stage wearing a dazzling red ballgown, her hair swept elegantly to the side. As the first notes rang out across the ship's Grand Hall atrium, a hush fell over the crowd. Sparks' soulful vocals filled the space, imbuing the anthem with passion. Guests watched in awe as her voice soared to the climactic high note, holding it with flawless control. When the last note faded, the audience erupted into thunderous applause and cheers. Sparks beamed, blowing kisses to the crowd as red, white and blue confetti rained down. Disney executives hugged Sparks as she left the stage, congratulating her on a show-stopping performance."
Jordin really captured the spirit of this special occasion," said Disney Cruise Line president Sharon Siskie. "Her voice is magnificent, and you could truly feel the emotion behind every word. It was the perfect way to usher in this incredible new ship." In addition to her musical talents, Sparks has a deep personal connection to Disney. She got her big break at age 17 winning the sixth season of American Idol, which aired on ABC, a network owned by Disney. Her self-titled debut studio album was released later that year on Jive Records, which was founded by Clive Davis and distributed by RCA Records, both subsidiaries of Sony Music Entertainment, which holds a stake in Disney Music Group." Disney has been intertwined with my career from the very start," Sparks explained. "They've always felt like family, so being part of the Disney Treasure launch makes me so happy."
All About the Disney Treasure Cruise Ship The Disney Treasure is the sixth ship in Disney Cruise Line's fleet, joining the Disney Magic, Wonder, Dream and Fantasy, along with the recently launched Disney Wish. It continues the long legacy of Disney cruising that began back in 1998. At 1,119 feet long and 135 feet wide, the Disney Treasure has a similar size and capacity to the Disney Wish. It weighs in at a whopping 144,000 gross tonnage and has space for 1,555 crew members and 4,000 passengers across its 1,250 staterooms. That's enough room for plenty of magical Disney-themed fun across its 14 passenger decks." We're thrilled to welcome the Disney Treasure into our fleet," said Josh D'Amaro, Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products. "With features inspired by timeless Disney stories and the grandeur of faraway places, this wondrous ship is set to capture the hearts of guests of all ages."
Grand Hall Atrium The magnificent three-deck-high Grand Hall atrium serves as the dazzling entrance to the Disney Treasure. Inspired by the mystery and richness of gilded palaces from Asia and Africa, it sets the tone for adventure across the ship. The space features opulent design touches like grand staircases, ornate carvings and sparkling chandeliers. The hall is anchored by a towering golden statue depicting Aladdin and Jasmine astride the Magic Carpet, ready to take flight. During the day, guests can enjoy live musical performances on the Grand Hall's stage, highlighting tunes from classic Disney films.
Staterooms and Suites The Disney Treasure's 1,250 staterooms continue the overarching theme of adventure, with spaces inspired by timeless Disney and Pixar stories. Guests can choose from well-appointed standard rooms all the way up to expansive multi-room suites. Inside, outside or verandah staterooms offer dazzling details like custom artwork and subtle design nods to films like "Aladdin," "Pocahontas," "Luca" and "Up." Concierge guests have access to premium amenities and services in suites themed to "The Lion King," "The Jungle Book" and more. The grandest accommodations of all are the four opulent Royal Suites, two with "Jungle Book" theming and two inspired by "The Aristocats."
Family Fun Disney Cruise Line is renowned for keeping every member of the family entertained, and the Disney Treasure delivers on that reputation. Little ones can let their creativity run wild at It's a Small World Nursery, Disney's Oceaneer Club and Disney's Oceaneer Lab. Tweens and teens have their own hangouts at Edge and Vibe. Parents can enjoy grownup time at Palo Steakhouse, Enchanté, The Rose lounge and more, while the whole family can come together at entertainment hot spots like the Walt Disney Theatre, Marceline Market buffet and Mickey & Friends Festival of Foods poolside eatery. Of course, no Disney cruise would be complete without beloved characters. On the Disney Treasure, guests can encounter Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy and others across the ship's dining, activities and live shows.
Thrills and Adventure In addition to stage shows and family fun, the Disney Treasure also delivers next-level thrills with attractions like the AquaMouse water coaster. This maritime marvel propels riders 760 feet through twisting tubes high above the ship's upper decks. The ride's story follows Mickey and Minnie on a treasure hunt through a mysterious temple, making it the perfect fit for this adventure-themed ship. For adult guests, there's no bigger thrill than exploring the ship's themed bars and lounges in the evening. Jungle Cruise-inspired Skipper Society serves up tropical drinks and snacks, while 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea-themed Periscope Pub offers undersea adventure vibes.Out on deck, the nightly Pirate's Rockin' Parlay Party invites guests to dance the night away under the stars. Live music, fireworks and Jack Sparrow himself make appearances during this high-energy deck party for all ages.
Eastern and Western Caribbean Itineraries The Disney Treasure will sail 7-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises from Port Canaveral beginning December 21st, 2024. The weeklong vacations feature visits to tropical destinations like Grand Cayman, Cozumel, St. Thomas, Tortola and Castaway Cay, Disney's private island paradise. Eastern Caribbean sailings stop at Tortola, St. Thomas and Castaway Cay, while Western Caribbean itineraries visit Cozumel, Grand Cayman, Falmouth, Jamaica and Castaway Cay. Each cruise includes several days at sea to enjoy all the Disney Treasure has to offer." We can't wait for families to experience everything this magnificent ship has to offer," said Disney Cruise Line president Sharon Siskie. "With features inspired by exotic locales and thrilling tales of adventure, the Disney Treasure is truly one-of-a-kind."
A Dazzling Dedication Ceremony In addition to Jordin Sparks' show-stopping national anthem performance, the Disney Treasure dedication ceremony included appearances by several Disney executives and creative minds involved with the ship's creation. Josh D'Amaro, Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, welcomed the crowd and spoke about his excitement for Disney's cruise expansion. Bob Chapek, CEO of The Walt Disney Company, also delivered remarks about carrying on Walt's legacy of innovation and storytelling. The event paid tribute to the artisans and engineers who brought the ship to life, including Walt Disney Imagineering and the skilled shipbuilders at Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany." So much care and craftsmanship has gone into creating this incredible ship," D'Amaro said. "Seeing the Disney Treasure come to life has been amazing." Michael Colglazier and Sharon Siskie, President and SVP/GM of Disney Cruise Line, unveiled new details about features exclusive to the Disney Treasure. After the ceremony, attendees were among the first to explore the ship on special preview tours. The festivities concluded with a celebratory luncheon banquet in the ship's exquisite 1923 restaurant. Guests dined on gourmet dishes inspired by Walt Disney's early animation studio as the Disney Treasure set sail on its maiden voyage, the first of many magical journeys to come.
Conclusion The launch of the Disney Treasure marks an exciting new chapter in Disney's cruising history. With her dazzling christening ceremony headlined by Jordin Sparks, this majestic ship is ready to embark on adventures across the Caribbean for years to come. From her lavish Asian and Middle Eastern-inspired Grand Hall to imaginative onboard attractions like AquaMouse, the Disney Treasure brings legendary Disney storytelling to life through enchanting spaces and entertainment. Her maiden voyage kicks off a legacy of ocean voyages filled with relaxation, thrills and unforgettable family memories. Read the full article
Sleeping Beauty Spring: "Jak se Budí Princezny" ("How to Wake a Princess") (1978 Czech/German film)
This Czech Sleeping Beauty is effectively a follow-up to the beloved 1973 film Three Wishes for Cinderella. It was likewise a co-production of the Czech studio Barrandov and the East German studio DEFA (which had already produced a German-language Sleeping Beauty in 1971), and likewise directed by Václav Vorlícek, with a musical score by Karol Svoboda, and is based on a Czech variant on the fairy tale from the 19th century collection of writer Božena Němcová. While less well-known than Three Wishes..., at least outside of the Czech Republic, it still has much of the same charm, fleshing out the fairy tale with creativity, warmth, humor, and humanity.
The story opens in the familiar way, as King Dalimil (Jiří Slovak), Queen Eliška (Milena Dvorksá), and their subjects are overjoyed by the birth of Princess Růženka (whose name, like several other foreign names for Sleeping Beauty, means "little rose"). But before long, unique details appear. This version of the tale has no grand christening celebration with fairy godmothers, nor does an angry fairy curse the baby princess. Instead, the villainess is Queen Eliška's jealous older sister, Melánia (Libuše Švormová), who wanted to marry King Dalimil herself, and now lives as a recluse in a dark, crumbling forest castle. When the king and queen visit her with their baby in hope of reconciling, she curses Růženka to prick her finger at age seventeen (not specifically on a spindle – anything sharp will do) and fall asleep forever, as will the whole kingdom with her. But as the king and queen leave in anguish, Melánia's kindly old maidservant cryptically assures them "Love is stronger than death."
Seventeen years later, the king, queen, and princess are visited by the royal family of the Midnight Kingdom. Believing Růženka will be safe from the curse if she goes elsewhere, her father is anxious to see her marry their neighbors' elder son Prince Jiří (Jan Kraus). But Růženka (Marie Horáková), a free-spirited lover of nature and music, is none too eager for an arranged marriage – especially not when Jiří turns out to be a spoiled, arrogant fop. Instead, she's drawn to his handsome, unpretentious younger brother, Prince Jaroslav (Jan Hrušínsky), who returns the sentiment. After various scenes that bring Růženka and Jaroslav closer together, and highlight the difference between the two princely brothers – including an especially funny scene where Jiří fights a "bear," which is really Jaroslav's comic servant Matěj (Vladimir Menšík) in a suit – the castle celebrates Růženka and Jiří's betrothal. Jaroslav leaves in despair after Jiří lies that Růženka doesn't want him at the feast. But at the last moment, Růženka refuses to marry Jiří.
The king and queen increase their efforts to protect Růženka from anything pointy, having thorny plants burnt, swords and knives blunted, and even hedgehogs and bees removed from the land. But secretly, Melánia comes to the castle and leads Růženka to a tower, where she gives her a bouquet of roses, letting her think they're a gift from Jaroslav. Růženka pricks her finger on a thorn and falls asleep, as does all the rest of the kingdom, and Melánia exults at finally being "queen," despite having no subjects to rule over.
Much like Disney's Sleeping Beauty, this film reduces the enchanted sleep from a hundred years to just a few days, so the prince whom Růženka already loves can be the one to wake her. The sole "survivor" of the curse is the beekeeper, who was away at the time, and he hurries to break the news to the Midnight Kingdom's royal family, revealing Růženka's love for Jaroslav in doing so. Clinging to the hope that "love is stronger than death," Jaroslav and his servant Matěj steal back to the Rose Kingdom. After conquering each obstacle – learning to swim within minutes to cross a river, chopping through the forest of rosebushes with which Melánia has surrounded the castle, and digging a drainage channel when Melánia sends a flood – Jaroslav finally reaches the tower and kisses Růženka, breaking the spell. Melánia is chased by the castle's hunting dogs into the river, while the kingdom rejoices at Růženka and Jaroslav's union.
With its lush green settings and rich Renaissance costumes, this film is visually gorgeous, and though the musical score's blend of classical and '70s pop idioms might sound kitschy to some listeners, it has a gentle charm too. The cast is excellent throughout, and though the script takes liberties with the traditional tale, like the Disney version it creates a fresh story that's arguably better suited to cinema. I might wish that the deliciously psychotic Melánia had more screen time and a more spectacular defeat, but her short-shrifting is made up for by the portrayal of the lively yet melancholy Růženka, one of the most fully human of all Sleeping Beauties, and by Prince Jaroslav's growth from ignored, insecure second son to romantic hero.
Just like its more famous sister film, Three Wishes for Cinderella, this unconventional yet lovely Sleeping Beauty retelling is one that I wholeheartedly recommend to lovers of fairy tales.
You want inspiration? I will give you inspiration! My prompt is basically based on both Han Christen Anderson tale of the Little Mermaid as well as the Disney version.
Prompt: Mermaid Penelope began to fall in love with a traveler named Colin who she rescued from drowning in the thunderstorm. Determined to be with her new love, she makes a dangerous deal with the sea witch Cressida Cowper to become mortal for three days in exchange of her voice for the pair of legs to make the prince fall in love with her. However, there’s a catch, everytime her foot touches the ground she will feel as if she’s walking on broken glass.
Oh, I have an idea. Let me tweak this a little bit.
Penelope was born a siren. She was born a siren with a beautiful voice and talent for words. One would always need that when you sang about someone's most desired wish after all.
Like the rest of her pod Penelope used her voice to hunt mortal sailors. But unlike the rest of her pod Penelope only hunted a specific kind of mortals. Those who have harmed others such as that coward Fife who would use women and then have them tossed over when he was done.
Penelope always wished she could have done more for those women then just avenging their deaths, but there are rules she had to follow. Her mother, Portia, had made sure Penelope had them memorized before she was ever let out from under her mother's fin.
Rule #1: Sirens do not save mortals; they only hunt them.
Rule #2: Never hunt without your pod.
Rule #3: Never fall in love, especially with a demigod. It never ends well for the siren.
"So how did I break two rules in one night?" Penelope wondered to herself, staring down at the demigod in front of her.
Physically she knew how she broke two rules.
The sea god was gracious enough last night to warn his subjects of the incoming storm, canceling the hunt.
Storms were for scavengers, not hunters. The winds would drown out their voices.
But Penelope was determined. The ship they had coming through was rumored to have a man on it that Penelope would very much like to hunt.
It would only be fair; he took Felicity away from her. She'll take his life.
Penelope could do this. She wouldn't be aiming for the whole ship, that was for pod hunts. No, she just wants that one man.
In the end she didn't even get a chance to drown him. The storm had wrecked the ship and sent everyone overboard. Penelope swam around the pieces of the wreckage, that man would not even get a chance to make it out of this alive.
"There you are," Penelope grinned.
Geoffrey Albansdale, the human mortal that took her baby sister.
Penelope swam towards him, ready to rip out his throat.
A splash and two new smells assultated Penelope's senses.
Demigods. Fucking perfect.
There were two, a man a few older than her who was struggling to swim himself and a girl to the surface.
The girl would have been the same age as Felicity.
No! No saving mortals, especially demigods! She needed to finish her hunt and leave. Before Penelope could start swimming again, the man had stopped fighting. His limbs going still.
They were both going to drown.
Someone else was already swimming Albansdale back to the surface.
"Damn!" Penelope cursed, using all her strength to swim towards the demigods. Grabbing both, it was easier than detaching the man, she dragged them to the surface.
Now here she is, sitting in the sand, wondering where the hell she went wrong. It's not like she could even demand they take her to Albansdale when they woke up.
Violet, the meddlesome love goddess, had cursed sirens by taking their voices and tails when they were on land. She also made it so every step they took felt like walking on glass. The only way to break it was true loves kiss, or so the rumors say.
"That childish goddess has dreams of everyone finding love," Portia had scoffed when Penelope asked why sirens didn't go on land. "We sirens only need mortal men for two things."
Penelope was taken out of her thoughts by the man opening his eyes, they were green. "Oh," he breathed out. Then he did the strangest thing. He laughed.
"Well, going out in that storm wasn't very well thought of, was it Hyacinth?"
The girl groaned and rolled onto her side. "Shut up Colin."
The man now dubbed Colin laughed again. He turned towards Penelope. "She's mad that I was right."
Penelope could only stare in confusion. Maybe there was something wrong with this demigod? Penelope peaked into his psyche. (What you thought sirens automatically knew a person's desire?)
Penelope sees a man who hungers for a purpose, who loves fiercely, and loyally. A man Penelope would never hunt.
Colin leans closer, and his mind flashes through Penelope's.
Shit, Penelope just broke rule number three, and with the son of the love goddess of all people.
