Last Exile

Modeled, printed, and painted by me.

I still love this show, warts and all. I had it on in the background while working on stuff this last week, and it got me inspired to make a model of the titular ship, the Exile.

It should also have a pair of massive energy wings sprouting from the top, but it turned out the pegs in my model were too puny to hold them. I'll have to go back and fix them at some point, but this was just for fun, so it's not very high priority.

HC on How God Could Speak

This is such a random thought I've had for a while, but the idea of God still speaking ancient times like how things are written in the bible but what they actually say is more modern/casual fuels me.

Like, just imagine Charlie somehow meeting them and the only response they give is "What the fuckith?" or "Thou shant disith me". I realize if we ever do get to see them (which tbh, I'm going to assume we won't), they'll probably be speaking normally or akin to Adam, but I just find it so funny their dialect being unchanging and sounding like they're trying to be hip with the youths with their actual wording of things. Plus, low-key, could help a bit more with intimidation speaking like that, as well as humor. It's a small Swiss army knife of a headcanon in my book.

Last exile is such a old gem. I saw it back then as a child but only the first episode but this anime stuck in my mind till today and I treat myself with the whole Serie 👁️👄👁️ This is my oc for Last exile: Aria Duncan a mechanic. She served under Laady Sophia and was transferred to the Silvana as an escort for her. She owes her scar to her curiosity and ignorance while tinkering with the vanship back then in her teen. (a explosion was the result of her work.)

So in 2016 I finished writing my german fanfiction “Gewehrschützin” that takes place in the wonderful world of the Anime Last Exile. In 2017 my lovely sister littleskrib read the story and decided that she wanted to draw some character designs for it.

This is Clea, the protagonist, interpreted and designed by my sister. She is one of like three female musketeers in her battalion. Born in Disith, she wants to fight for her slowly freezing country in order to win new land for her people.

This is Cleas older brother Kirill. He is a musketeer too and doesn’t like getting up early.

This in Niko. Guess what, he is a musketeer too. However, unlike Clea and Kirill he is a veteran who survived many battles. That is quite an accomplishment, because in Last Exile a battle between musketeers equates to the two battalions lining up on giant airships and shooting each other until enough people have died. It’s steampunk, I guess.

This is Jakow. He likes making jokes, drinking cheap beer and playing cards. He has chest hair.

This is Adrian. I have no idea how he manages to handle that weapon. It’s steampunk, I guess.

This is Ionatan. Chances are, he will beat you up if you look at Adrian the wrong way. Or if you happen to be a female musketeer. He doesn’t like Clea.

This is Katharina. She isn’t a musketeer, but would like to be one. Or to travel the world. Anything, really, that is a little bit more exciting than her boring sheltered life in her fathers villa in Anatoray.

There are some more characters -- pretty much all of them musketeers. You can see a few of them in these artworks.

A Morning in Norkia

Another show I’m a big fan of is Last Exile, the steampunk adventure by Studio Gonzo. It explains nearly *nothing* to the audience, making half the fun of watching it come from trying to figure it out. I still don’t understand it fully, and I love that.

Anyway, I Forged a few ships from it while I was making the Yukikaze.

The two main characters pilot this small courier craft, called a “vanship”. I made a flyable version...

...and a prop version that has seats you can actually sit in. Flying it around with no one in the cockpit does look pretty weird, after all. 

I also made a couple battleships. Unfortunately, neither is to scale with the vanship (which is itself out of scale with players), so I prefer to think of all this as just regular old art. Not much chance of these being used in a map; they take up *enormous* amounts of budget. 

I tried my hand at recreating a shot from the show’s opening. Sadly, these ships alone consume ~90% of the object budget, so I can’t be 100% faithful to the source and fill the sky with more of them.

I tried to script a bunch of explosion FXs to make it look like the two ships were duking it out, but for whatever reason, they refused to obey the timing I gave them. Instead of being staggered, they would all fire at once--which isn’t exactly the effect I was going for. Oh well.

Note to self: hair needs to be poofier, lace the bodice tighter, and find beard and boots and jewelry.

Last Exile (ラストエグザイル, Rasuto Eguzairu) is a Japanese animated television series created by Gonzo. It featured a production team led by director Koichi Chigira, character designer Range Murata, and production designer Mahiro Maeda.

Plot

The story is set on the fictional world of Prester, where its inhabitants use aerial vehicles known as vanships as a means of transportation. On this world which is divided in eternal conflict between the nations of Anatoray and Disith, sky couriers Claus Valca and Lavie Head must deliver a girl who holds the key to uniting the two factions. Although Prester itself is not a representation of Earth, it features technology reminiscent of nineteenth century Europe at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution.
