Stuff I could talk about for days include: Nico and Mark's friendship.
PR or not, everything I've seen of these two are very sweet. Mark was Nico's first teammate in Williams, and even though I don't know much about their time there, they seemed to get along well.
They seemed to be closer when Nico joined Mercedes, and Mark was in Red Bull. I don't think Mark took on any role of mentor or role model because Nico had his father, Keke, but I do think Nico looked up to Mark as someone he respected and thought was a good driver.
They seem to get along well, even now, and I would love to see if I can find more photos and stories of them. If you have any, please don't be afraid to send them in, I love having f1 photos!! ><
The next part is from an rpf view, so you don't have to read it.
From an RPF viewpoint, I can understand why there aren't many fanfics, but it also came as a shock to me how many romantic there were compared to platonic. With the amount of photos and interviews they've shared, even being teammates at one point, I expected more fics.
They're a rare pair, even when romantic. (As of 16/02/25) there are 5 platonic fics and 27 romantic fics, they aren't breaking any barriers. (I've even written 2 of the 5 platonic fics)
The reason I assumed there would be more, is because they are both a part of two VERY popular ships. Brocedes and Martian/sebmark have huge numbers, and they were both in the sort for many years, even at the same time.
I prefer them as a platonic, and I guess this post is me advocating for them. :) they deserve a lot more fics 🗣

I’ve seen a couple of posts on how technically the last test Gemma was supposed to go through worked, except it was Mark S. that it worked on—because once Gemma was outside, Innie Mark/Mark S. realized that he didn’t have any feelings for her, that she was a stranger, and no trace of Outtie Mark’s love for her remained in him.
And obviously, this is true, Innie Mark doesn’t love or have any romantic feelings for Gemma.
But I think it’s important to note that, despite not knowing Gemma at all, despite her being a complete stranger to him, the writers go to really great lengths to show that he still cares about her as a person.
This is extremely integral to Mark S’s character as an Innie, and to the innie/outtie dynamics presented throughout show.
The very first scene of this season is Mark S. running as fast as he can through Lumon to try and find Ms. Casey/Gemma.
He spends his own time in Lumon searching for her and going to other departments to see if he can find ANY information on her whereabouts.
And even though it could risk not only his life, but the lives and existence of all the people living within the severed floor, he still goes below the severed floor and saves Gemma by leading her out of Lumon.
He does these things because Innie Mark understands that Gemma is a person who is being held captive, who was probably kidnapped, and who deserves her own life.
Throughout the series we’ve gradually learned about the stigma surrounding severed workers and what society thinks of innies in subtle and unsubtle ways. It’s pretty clear to me that Innies, as a class, are seen as lesser-than, with very few groups considering them to be ACTUAL people. Those that do see them as people tend to infantilize them and look down upon them.
It took talking to Mark Scout, his Outtie, for Innie Mark to finally realize that, despite all of his Outtie’s good intentions, he does not think of Innie Mark as a person.
And I think this is something that Outtie Mark may not even realize himself—but if we look at his behavior and the way he talks to Mark S, it’s clear that he doesn’t consider his Innie to be a person, not truly.
Outtie Mark does not afford Mark S. the same respect and personhood that Mark S—that all the Innies—are expected to afford their Outties, their Lumon superiors, and unsevered people.
Seeing Gemma outside of the severed floor and remembering his conversation with his Outtie is what makes this finally click for Mark S. It’s when he realizes that if he truly wants his own life, he’s going to have to fight for it, just like Helly tells C+M earlier in the episode. It’s where he finally understands that the personhood he recognizes in Gemma and Outtie Mark is something that he has been, and will continue to be, denied if he leaves the severed floor.
Mark S. choosing to stay on the severed floor is one of the very few choices that he has made that was not in service to his Outtie in any way—a purely and beautifully selfish choice to stay with the woman that he loves for a few more minutes, and to fight for his life instead of giving it up for his Outtie.
The test worked on Mark S. in that he couldn’t feel any of his Outtie’s love for Gemma, but it failed in that he refused to do exactly what he was asked to do by his outtie. He didn’t become a blank slate that exists only to serve Outties like Lumon wanted.
I think that’s something worth recognizing because, again, the fact that the innies are PEOPLE with autonomy and personhood is one of the central themes of Severance, and it was so so amazing to see Mark S. fully realize that and choose to stay with Helly.

Disclaimer: Please don't take this as a serious theory. I'm just having fun guessing what the next Severance episode title could indicate while being aware that I'm most likely wrong as Severance tends to surprise us with every new episode.
The next episode is called "Sweet Vitriol," also known as diethyl ether. In the 19th century, it was used as a recreational drug at organized parties called "ether frolics" (doesn't that word ring a bell? It's one of the tempers, and it's also Drummond's tattoo.). You could inhale it or drink it. During these gatherings, people often experienced minor injuries but did not feel pain; therefore, they did not react when something painful happened. Because of this discovery, ether became a common anaesthetic. But not only that, it was also used to cope with life's various challenges, both mundane and difficult (example).
Do you know who was born in the 19th century? Kier Eagan.
Do you remember where he worked? An ether factory.
Look, I don't know if Kier himself was addicted to ether, but he did say he had a "twin brother" who was presented to us as a symbol of hedonism. What was his name? Dieter. It kinda sounds like diethyl ether, doesn't it?
Kier also served as a military doctor in his twenties, and that's when he got the idea of creating and selling his own medical salves. If Kier founded Lumon in 1865, that means he treated soldiers during the American Civil War, in which anaesthesia played an important role as it was something new at that time. I am not saying he did, but he definitely could have experimented on those soldiers in some way.
And then I found this interesting quote by Hunter S. Thompson:
This is the main advantage of ether: it makes you behave like the village drunkard in some early Irish novel... total loss of all basic motor skills: Blurred vision, no balance, numb tongue - severance of all connection between the body and the brain. Which is interesting, because the brain continues to function more or less normally... you can actually watch yourself behaving in the terrible way, but you can't control it.
But what if you could control it? What if one could perform actions without experiencing pain or retaining any memory of those actions? Wouldn't it be convenient to visit the dentist without any recollection of the appointment? What if you could fly, despite your fear of airplanes? What if you could cope with life's various challenges with ease? Imagine a microchip enabling this... sounds good? Well, given the technological limitations of that era, Kier would have to leave this mission to his children...
Please take this with a grain of salt. I went down a rabbit hole and thought I'd share my thoughts. It's possible that none of it is accurate.

It's interesting how love (or at least some attraction) indeed transcends severance for Irving and Burt, Dylan and Gretchen, and Mark and Hellyna – but not for Mark and Gemma.
Mark S. had no romantic feelings for Ms. Casey, which makes me wonder where Mark and Gemma were in their relationship when she presumably died in that car accident... were they falling out of love?
I think you’re onto something with this! In s02e06 I got a little confused when Mark said that if only he could bring Gemma back he would drink less and he would listen more. This implies that he didn’t start drowning his sorrows in a glass of whiskey after Gemma’s death - he had been abusing alcohol even before. That suggests he had some unresolved issues in his life (that he likely deemed unsolvable) and a tendency to avoid confronting them.
Also the fact that he “didn’t listen to her enough” makes me think that Mark wasn’t paying as much attention to his wife as he should have? If that’s the case, maybe he took her presence in his life for granted and now suffers from that realisation? Or was he a shitty husband and Gemma started to distance herself from him? Maybe it’s the fact that they couldn’t have any kids? That could be Mark’s greatest wish in life (which we don’t know if it’s true or not).
So, there’s a lot of “ifs” and “maybes” in this equation, we can only speculate being given only crumbs of information. My general take on this whole question is that Mark regrets that he didn’t do better when she was still alive and THAT’s the core of his grief, not the idea of “my celestial ethereal queen was taken away from me, and now my life is grey and dull”.
