that scene of irving holding helly after trying to drown helena gets to me so much. he holds her because he's sorry. he holds her because he's so glad that she's finally back. he holds her because she's scared and confused, and helly r doesn't deserve to be scared and confused. helly r was never cruel.

in a way, irving understands and respects helly in a way no other character does: he sees her as more than just an extension of her outie. he sees her as a full person with her own personality, distinct enough for him to notice immediately if she's different, because helly r, to him, is a very specific person. a person he cares about deeply. a friend. and when he drowns helena, he's not doing it out of hatred for her: he's doing it out of love for helly. indignation at the violation she's being put through. "how dare you take my friend's body and use it, how dare you pretend to be her and think we wouldn't notice the difference, how dare you rid her of her personhood over and over again and still act like you have a right to the relationships she's built here with us."

it gets to me, on such a deep level, just how loved helly r is.

I think we moved on too quickly from the video that Lumen made about the “Macrodat Uprising”. It is humorous. It is horrifying. Everything these people did has been made into a parody supporting the very thing they wanted to destroy. Irving’s “let’s burn this place to the ground” being made into a spectacle is meant to be humiliating, and it takes a moment where Irving is turning against his entire life and faith and making it look like a melodramatic overreaction. It used the audio that was gathered through constant surveillance and then used the innies’ sense of community and what used to be their hope for a better life to further chip away at that hope. Lumen is weaponizing the characters against themselves. It makes a mockery out of the first real thing they experienced
