Disappearing Malta Series - an unintentional photo series: the badly decaying facade of a house of character, Msida, Malta. One of the very first doors that I photographed, in 2015, whilst waking to Valletta, which I searched in vain for the other day and I couldn’t see it. #DisappearingMalta: We used to have a beautiful, colorful, view from our 2nd floor apartment balconies. Used to... this will be final in the next few days when the destruction of this regal 60+ year old takes place, in the name of ‘development’ (because Malta needs more overpriced apartments). Over the four years that we have lived in St Julians, we have witnessed the systematic destruction, uprooting, of all things nature - from majestic palm trees to swathes of vibrant bougainvillea... all gone. And, just as importantly, the Cat Village, which is a landmark and huge tourist attraction, under the sanctuary of the tree will be no more, in that spot (it will be relocated further along... small mercies, and all that). Or, In the not-as-subtle words of my husband, @jasonflorio: Murder of the last tree on Triq Spinola and death of the Cat Village as we know it _ Dear Malta let's make a stand! We have had news that the rapacious bastards that own Portomaso will unleash their chainsaws and destroy the 60+ year old tree at The Cat Village tomorrow - Monday August 10th. It’s the last tree on Triq Spinola, St Julians - and the death knoll of the Cat Village after 40 years as we know it. Who in the media can we reach out to to get some press... or community groups to make a last minute stand? Cheers! #Gambia - Today is a big day - our photography exhibition opens later today, here in the Gambia: 5-9pm at the 'Gambia Centre for Victims of Human Rights Violations'. This is huge for us as we could not have put up this kind of exhibition - 'Portraits to Remember’ exhibiting portraits of victims and resisters of the former brutal dictatorship of Yahya Jammeh - it would not have been allowed under the Jammeh dictatorship, where freedom of speech was not allowed (unless it was for the regime), and Gambian’s were certainly too afraid to speak out about the human rights abuses that were meted out to them over a 22 year period. _ So, walking the dogs on the beach is one of the best ways to start our day before we plough head-on into last minute pre-production (there is always last minute!) for the opening. ‘White Tip’ and ‘Snowy’ (the sweetest little street dog who is trying so hard to win oover the #9 dogs, to be accepted and gain entry into the compound/the #9 dogs lair), Cape Point Beach, The Gambia © Helen Jones-Florio (also @doors_facades_florio #StoriesBehindDoors #GambiaDoors #DisappearingMalta / @florio_gallery), with @JasonFlorio . All I could see was what appeared to be concrete and glass multi-story structures (Sliema was our first home and for those who know the town, they will almost surely understand my first (mis)impressions).
