#Gambia - #Portraits4PositiveChange - Image ©Helen Jones-Florio: @jasonflorio making a portrait of Bintu, who was detained for five days, beaten and raped by three masked security officers at the Gambia Police Intervention Unit (PIU) HQ, after being arrested during a May 9th 2016 rally to demand the release of illegally detained protesters from previous rallies held on April 15th/16th, 2016. When asked if she would prefer that we keep her identity anonymous her adamant reply was “No, this was done to me, and I want justice…these men should be punished” From the series ‘Gambia - Victims and Resisters of a Regime’ @floriotravels/@florio_gallery _ A Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC) began this month in The Gambia to investigate ex-president, Yahya Jammeh’s, 22-year authoritarian rule whereby mass human rights violations took place. A momentous, and historical, time for Gambia, and Gambians to be able to speak so freely once again. For the past two years, I have had the privilege of being able to photograph and record testimonies of victims, and resisters of the Jammeh regime. "Education is the great engine of personal development. It is through education that the daughter of a peasant can become a doctor, that the son of a mine-worker can become the head of the mine, that a child of farmworkers can become the president of a great nation. It is what we make out of what we have, not what we are given, that separates one person from another." #GambiaHasDecided fool better open your eyes 👀 Fool chim lakat chipuuuu bu gudaaa

Gambia is a minuscule country in West Africa, but anyone who cares about the future of Africa, and indeed the world, needs to pay attention to the recent events unfolding there. Up until now, to people who had actually heard of it, Gambia was mostly known for being a kind of potpourri of clichés of African dysfunction. The tiny country is landlocked into its bigger neighbor Senegal, and makes no sense as an independent unit, except that it was a British Crown colony inside the French colonial empire. Hugging as it does the bounteous Gambia river, following it to the mouth of the Atlantic Ocean, Gambia features absolutely stunning landscapes. Most of its population lives in crushing poverty, since

Jan 21st 2017: Gambia Has Decided. The day the ex-President, Yahya Jammeh, finally left. Images © @jasonflorio . On Jan 21st, 2017, we waited the whole day - along with other members of the national and international press - for ex-president of The Gambia, Yahya Jammeh, to finally fly out of the country. On December 1st, 2016, the Gambian people voted out their autocratic president, Jammeh, after 22 years in power, and elected Adama Barrow as their new president. Jammeh conceded defeat but a week later announced that he was annulling the election results and would not step down. A grassroots movement #GambiaHasDecided emerged in reaction. . On January 21st, 2017, in response to mounting international pressure, Yahya Jammeh, along with his family, finally boarded a flight and left The Gambia with Guinean President, Alpha Condé. Jammeh has since been in exile in Equatorial Guinea.
