This episode just goes over the first half of the stuff from the skipped chapters. Still pretty funny to see Yaichi afraid of Ukai though, just like my neighbors are! Also, Yaichi's anime debate! It's been too long!

Direct Sunlight by Christine Sneed

I fell in love with Sneed's writing after reading The Virginity of Famous Men earlier this year. This is another strong collection with her trademark subtle shifting glances into people's delicate lives and emotional states. Excellent work.

Cocktail by Lisa Alward

This was the final of the 2024 Danuta Gleed nominees I had to read. The funny thing is this is a lot like Sneed's work; literary fiction about relationships, but this didn't resonate. Probably found it the least engaging of the nominees but what do I know? It won the Danuta Gleed.

The Doll's Alphabet by Camilla Grudova.

Also a Danuta Gleed nominee but from a previous year. I saw this mentioned in a Twitter thread about best short story collections. Lived up to the hype. Eerie speculative fiction.

The Dance of the Demons by Esther Singer Kreitman

I heard someone mention Kreitman in the context of being Isaac Bashevis Singer's neglected and forgotten older literary sister. Was she an undiscovered amazing author buried by the patriarchy? Well, not in English she wasn't. I found the novel quite sad and a bit of a slog. An interesting read in the way it captures a way of European Jewry about to be completely obliterated but not a great read on its own. The edition I read included essays and notes on the translation which were very interesting though.

Things That Cause Inappropriate Happiness by Danila Botha

I wanted to like this so much. I found it incredibly mid. Also not the author's fault but there was an insane amount of typos in my copy, like 20+ which I've never had in a book before.

Bear by Julia Phillips

Went in and out of like with this one but I thought it stuck the landing incredibly well.

Annie Bot by Sierra Greer

Quick and heartbreaking look at a sex bot who gains sentience. I thought this was incredibly heartbreaking and wonderful.

When I first saw efellana_illustrations beautiful, whimsical artwork, I knew I needed to see Elain in their style. They were so wonderful to work with, and I’m so happy with how this piece turned out💕 I think that this poem by Mary Oliver goes so well with this artwork, and Elain as a character in general, so I had to include it. Personally, I think Elain deserves to spend more time frolicking through the woods, getting up to all sorts of witchy business, talking with the birds, and gazing into mysterious golden orbs.

Haikyuu Chapter 74: Direct Sunlight

REFLECTION:

The chapter starts with a brief page of Kiyoko being hot and admired...before we are introduced to her almost exact foil, Yaichi Hitoka. Where Kiyoko is composed, Yaichi is always fidgeting like she just had a pot brownie before the police shows up to knock on her door to ask about a recent murder. Kiyoko is tall and elegantly beautiful while Yaichi is short and averagely cute. Finally, Tanaka and Nishinoyo throw themselves at Kiyoko while when they see Yaichi:

Yaichi will be a temporary member who will serve as a manager while Kiyoko does her own shit. The team is welcoming...and Yaichi is already feeling the pressure.

The next day, Tsukishima rudely brushes off Kageyama and Hinata when they come to him for studying help, already sick of helping these idiots all the time with stuff that comes so easily to him. Hinata tries to ask Yamaguchi but Yamaguchi is terrible at English. Yamaguchi then directs them towards Yaichi, who is in a college prep class. Yaichi panics when she sees them walk in her class because she has already forgotten their names (making her my second spirit animal after Kenma) but Hinata introduces himself on Shonen instinct so she's good. After explaining that Tsukishima is an asshole and a shitty teacher, Hinata asks Yaichi for her help. Yaichi doesn't have much confidence in her skills to teach but, as it turns out, she's awesome at it. Hinata is able to understand her notes more easily due to Yaichi's mom passing down her design skills to her daughter. Hinata and Kageyama proceed to infodump about Volleyball to an almost-Takeda level clueless Yaichi before she expresses confusion over Hinata being in the club considering how short he is. She freaks out for her microagression but Hinata brushes it off, used to it at this point. Hinata explains that while he's short, he can jump and that he's excited to be around a bunch of strong men all the time (pass on that low-hanging fruit). She then calls him a small giant, which flips Hinata out because he thinks she's comparing him to his hero. It is then explained by her that Small Giant is the term for any Japanese athlete who is small compared to their teammates. Hinata then declares he will be a Small Giant before shaking hands with Yaichi and leaving. Yaichi then nearly perishes from being in direct sunlight.

Later at practice, Hinata shows Yaichi the fruits of their labor: Hinata got 1/3 of the questions on his English quiz right!

...He's in the double digits and that's progress (also, forgot to mention it earlier but Hinata said the reason he doesn't do well in class is because he doesn't sit still long enough to pay attention. UP TOP!)

Kiyoko gives Yaichi the rundown on her job's duties and warns her to watch out for stray balls. So not only does Yaichi have to manage but she has to worry about perverted assassins now too. Yaichi watches the practice and, indeed, a stray ball comes flying at her face. Hinata blocks it though. She and Kiyoko have girl talk and the others note that wow, Kiyoko can actually experience joy. Kiyoko tells Yaichi that she's as gung-ho about getting to the nationals as the boys are and the Ukai ends the chapter telling the team to move past defeat. Meanwhile, we can see Yaichi is already coming Down With The Hinatas, having already caught his earnestness.
