Thinking about an alternate universe where Anya and Daisuke go to college together
Anya's back for her ninth round of medical education after taking more time to study since the Tulpar returned to earth, Daisuke pursuing art despite his mother's insistence that it's a dead end career (his father doesn't mind, as long as Daisuke's happy and making relatively good decisions) (Daisuke's Cool Dad is a hill I will die on, he gave Daisuke that Hawaiian shirt, he told me so-)
Having kept in touch after the trip, they figure out they're going to the same campus and scramble to see if they can share a dorm- if they couldn't, they'd try to save for an apartment, or Daisuke would butter up his parents to see if they'd cover it as long as he's in school
Notes, books and drawings strewn across their living space, organized chaos; Daisuke would help Anya study medical terms and procedures- they'd both get queasy about some of the subjects, but power through together. Anya would help Daisuke with his art block, giving him references and inspiration for assignments
Swansea sends each of them new sneakers and other school necessities, and Curly calls to check in once or twice a week; they have monthly potlucks and movie nights, tossing popcorn at each other and usually ignoring the film entirely in favor of the company
Swansea swears he's not crying as he watches them walk the stage at their graduation, then immediately runs up the isle and lifts Daisuke in a spinning hug, all of them misty eyed and laughing during pictures

What's the difference between a nurse and nurse practitioner?
They are two different "levels" in the nursing hierarchy.
Here's how that hierarchy works in the USA:
At the very beginning rung you have STNAs, or State Tested Nursing Assistants. STNAs have taken a class that lasts in the weeks-months range of time and received a certificate. They have then taken a test to prove that they understand the material. In a job context, STNAs do a lot of the direct patient care- they bathe and feed patients, take vitals, turn patients who cannot move for themselves, etc...
The next rung up is an LPN, or Licensed Practical Nurse. LPNs have gone to a nursing program lasting usually between 1 and 2 years, have received a diploma, and have taken a test called the NCLEX-PN. In a job context, LPNs can do everything an STNA can do, plus they can gather information about a patient's condition, pass medications (except some IV medications) and do many nursing interventions like wound care, placing IVs and catheters, etc... An LPN must work under the license of an RN.
The next rung up is an RN, or Registered Nurse. RNs have either an associates' degree (2-3 years) or a bachelor's degree (4 years) in nursing, which has allowed them to sit for a test called the NCLEX-RN. No matter which education route the nurse takes to get their RN the license is the same and they are allowed to do the same things in a clinical context. In a job context, an RN can do everything an LPN can do, but can give all medications (including IV) and are allowed to also make care decisions LPNs cannot. They also hold an independent license, meaning they can provide nursing level care without needing to be supervised by a higher license-holder.
The next maybe half rung up is a Certified Registered Nurse. These are nurses who have worked in a particular area of nursing (med-surg, psych, ICU, etc...) for a certain number of years and taken classes and a test to say they know a lot about that area of nursing. Now, unlike the nursing license itself, this certification is usually through a private organization instead of the state of practice. Certified Registered Nurses don't have any additional skills they can do, but they do act as a resource for other nurses and may get paid more depending on the organization they work for.
The next rung up is an APRN, or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. An APRN is a nurse who has a masters degree or higher in nursing, and who, again, has taken a test. Here is where things get complicated. Because 4 different licenses fall under APRN:
Nurse Practitioner (NP). An NP is an APRN who works under a physician's license in some states and hold independent licenses in others. They are able to do a lot of things that doctors can do, including diagnose, treat, and prescribe (what they are able to prescribe depends on the state they are in). NPs specialize in a specific patient population, and they can only work with the type of patient they have specialized in.
Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS). A CNS is an APRN who acts as a consulting nurse. Basically, they have gotten specific education in a specific area of nursing for a specific population, and they consult with the multidisciplinary team, generally at a hospital, about the nursing care for that type of patient. CNSs typically cannot prescribe medications, but may prescribe nursing interventions.
Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). A CRNA is an APRN who works as an extension of an anesthesiologist. They provide anesthesia during surgery and procedures.
Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM). A CNM is an APRN who delivers babies and helps mothers and children through the entire maternity and birth process. They may also do things like women's health exams, nutritional counseling, and the like.

While the uptick in strike activity in 2021 is heartening, its influence should not be exaggerated. The number and extent of job actions was noticeable but still very small by historical standards, and union density continued to decline. A significant labor upsurge might be in the works, but it is not in evidence yet.
In the early days of the coronavirus pandemic, Pope Francis spoke movingly of the workers keeping the world turning in dark times:
People who do not appear in newspaper and magazine headlines or on the latest television show, yet in these very days are surely shaping the decisive events of our history. Doctors, nurses, storekeepers and supermarket workers, cleaning personnel, caregivers, transport workers, men and women working to provide essential services and public safety, volunteers, priests, men and women religious, and so very many others. They understood that no one is saved alone.1
These workers have done everything we’ve asked of them and more. They have been through hell, particularly those who have risked their health and well-being to care for the sick, educate the young, feed the hungry, and deliver the things the rest of us need to get through this period of grinding uncertainty. Employers, politicians, and talking heads have lauded them as essential workers, but the stark gap between the praise and the grim realities of working life in the United States — which was already miserable for millions before the pandemic — have pushed many to the breaking point. Indeed, record numbers of American workers have quit their jobs in what the media has dubbed the Great Resignation. According to the US Labor Department, 4.5 million workers voluntarily left their jobs in November 2021. The number of monthly quits has exceeded three million since August 2020, and the trend shows no sign of slowing down.2 Job switchers span the employment ladder, but turnover has been largely concentrated in the low-wage service sector, where workers are taking advantage of the very tight labor market to get a better deal for themselves. According to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, workers with high school diplomas are currently enjoying a faster rate of wage growth than workers with bachelor’s degrees, a remarkable situation that has not occurred in decades.3
Worker discontent is not only finding expression in the form of quitting and job switching. In 2021, we witnessed a modest increase in the frequency and visibility of collective action in the workplace. Tens of thousands of workers, union and nonunion alike, challenged employers through protests and strikes across sectors and in many different geographical regions. Workers in health care and social assistance, education, and transportation and warehousing led the way, but they were joined by workers in hotels and food services, manufacturing, and other industries. Protests and strikes tended to be concentrated in states where labor is relatively stronger, namely California, New York, and Illinois, but some states with low union density, like North Carolina, saw an uptick in labor action, too. Pay increases were easily the most common demand, but health and safety, staffing, and COVID-19 protocols were high on the agenda as well.
The year 2021 was less a strike wave than a strike ripple, and it has not yet resulted in any appreciable increase in unionization. A few trends stand out. The first is that labor protest and strike action were heavily concentrated among unionized groups of workers. Unionized groups of workers accounted for nearly 95% of all estimated participants in labor protests and more than 98% of all estimated participants in strikes. The second is that protests and strikes were concentrated by industry — namely health care and education, which together accounted for roughly 60% of all labor actions. Finally, protests and strikes were heavily concentrated geographically. Just three states with relatively high levels of union density — California, New York, and Illinois — accounted for more than half the total estimated participants in protests and strikes. In short, collective workplace action is by and large taking place where organized labor still retains residual sources of strength. In this context, spreading protest and strike action beyond its current industrial and regional confines depends on unionization in new places.
Conditions conducive to labor action — rising inflation, pandemic-related pressures, and a tight labor market — are likely to persist into 2022, and the Biden administration’s National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has been meaningfully supportive of worker organizing. US labor is probably not on the verge of a historic breakthrough, but in this context, workers may have an opportunity to make modest material and organizational gains.
Making new organizational gains is critical to the fortunes of the labor movement and the reviving US left. The vast majority of the workers involved in strikes and labor protests last year were already members of unions, not unorganized workers looking to unionize. This is why it is so concerning that last year’s uptick in labor action occurred amid a further decline in union density in 2021. The overall rate of union membership stands at 10.3% of the total labor force, while the total number of union members, just over fourteen million in 2021, continues its long decline.4 While some have argued that treating union density as the key measure of labor’s strength is a mistake, it seems clear that, at least in the US context, where union density and union coverage almost entirely overlap, it does provide an effective measurement of working-class power.5
Boosting the level of union density should therefore be among the leading priorities of progressives and socialists in the United States. As the power resources school of welfare state scholars has long argued, the relative strength of the labor movement and its affiliated political parties has been the single most important factor shaping welfare state development over time and across countries. Here in the United States, where we have never had a nationwide social democratic party aligned with a strong labor movement, the weakness of working-class organization is clearly reflected in the fragmentation and stinginess of our welfare state. The state-level wave of attacks on organized labor that began in 2010 have made it that much harder for unions to defend working-class interests and reduce inequality. But the fact that they were able to meaningfully mitigate the growth of inequality, even during the period of neoliberal retrenchment, shows that rebuilding the labor movement needs to be a chief priority of any progressive political agenda.6 The Biden administration’s pro-union stance suggests it understands this. But if it’s unable to act decisively to boost union membership, all the pro-union rhetoric it can muster will ultimately amount to little.
TRACKING LABOR ACTION
Researchers at the Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR) began documenting strikes and labor protests in late 2020. Their ILR Labor Action Tracker provides a database of workplace conflict across the United States, based on information collected from government sources, news reports, organizational press releases, and social media. It counts both strikes and labor protests as “events” but distinguishes between the two. The major distinction between strikes and labor protests, according to this methodology, is whether the workers involved in the event stopped work. If they did, the event is defined as a strike; if they did not, it is defined as a labor protest. The Labor Action Tracker also collects data on a number of additional variables, including employer, labor organization (if applicable), local labor organization (if applicable), industry, approximate number of participants, worker demands, and more.7
ACTION TYPES
In 2021, there were 786 events with 257,086 estimated participants.8 Over 60% of the events were labor protests, while less than 40% were strikes (there was one recorded lockout). Roughly one-third of the estimated number of workers participated in labor protests, while roughly two-thirds participated in strikes. Further, the average number of estimated workers per labor protest (188) was significantly smaller than the average number of estimated workers per strike (553, see Table 1 for details).
DURATION
Neither labor protests nor strikes tended to last very long, which tracks with the generally sharp decline in strike duration in recent decades.9 Labor protests in particular were very short affairs. Of the labor protests with a start and end date, 96% lasted for just one day or less. Strikes also tended to have a short duration, but they typically did not end as quickly as protests. Of the strikes with a start and end date, one-third lasted for one day or less. Roughly two-thirds of strikes (68%) ended within a week, and over 90% ended within thirty days. One strike stands out for its unusually long duration: a 701-day strike by United Auto Workers (UAW) members against a metallurgical company in Pennsylvania, which began in September 2019 and ended in August 2021.
INDUSTRIES
An informed observer will not be surprised by which industries saw the largest number of labor action events (Table 2). The leading two industries by far were health care and social assistance and education, which are both highly unionized and have been subjected to enormous pressures during the pandemic. Together, they accounted for nearly 40% of the total labor protests and strikes. These industries also comprised over 60% of the overall number of estimated labor action participants — health care with 41.5% of the estimated participants, education with 18.8%. The overrepresentation of health care and education workers becomes even starker when we compare this to their employment shares in the overall labor force. In 2020, these two industries accounted for 16.3% of total nonfarm employment — health care with a 13.8% share and education with 2.3%.10 Put another way, the share of health care workers in 2021 labor actions was roughly three times larger than their share in the nonfarm labor force, while the share of education workers was more than eight times as large.
These two pace-setting industries were followed by a second tier of industries including transportation and warehousing, accommodation and food services, and manufacturing. It is not surprising to see these listed among the most turbulent industries, as they contain a mix of highly unionized employers and nonunion employers that have become a major focus of labor organizing activity, namely Amazon — the most frequently targeted employer, with twelve total labor actions — which was the target of twice as many labor actions as McDonald’s, the second-most targeted employer.
The industrial distribution of labor protests generally follows the overall distribution of labor action, with the notable exception of manufacturing, which saw far more strikes than protests. While the health care industry did not experience the largest number of strikes, it accounts for more than half of estimated strike participants (53%). Workers in education (12.4%) and manufacturing (16%) also accounted for outsize shares of the estimated number of participants.

Dr. Kim watched the child leave the room before signing a few papers and handing them to the nurse, before huffing and puffing. Kim Taehyung was a genius, a veritable medical freak: graduated at just eighteen, he had broken all records, making him the most coveted and admired doctor in the whole country. A pediatrician with many diplomas under his belt as he wishes to help as many children as he could. Another deep breath passes his nose as he lets his back rest against the armchair, running a sweaty hand over his face. Truth be told, after seventy-two hours on call without stopping, he needed a full pot of coffee, or three nights' sleep in a row.

Without further ado, the doctor leaves his armchair to follow the young nurse down the long, colorful corridor. Outside the night is pitch black, the overcast sky heralding the arrival of a big storm, and he's not surprised when the black car is already waiting for them in front of the entrance.

Elyzabeth smiles proudly before climbing into Jimin's car, taking the passenger seat while Taehyung climbed into the back, tiredness weighing heavily on his shoulders and not wanting to had the headache for a simple seat. He let his head fall back against the window, ready to begin his long-awaited night, before hearing the door open without anyone being able to do anything about it, and a strange noise being heard. The newcomer seems to be hiding behind a black and white bandana, his hood and the darkness of the car preventing them from seeing anything of his face, and none of the three recognize the assailant's voice as he begins to speak.
« - You're doctors, aren't you? Perfect. Don't be a clown. You're going to follow my instructions very nicely, or I'll blow your brain out and then it'll be the pretty doll's turn.
- I'll do it. I'll do it. W-we will do whatever you want, I promise... »
Anxiety builds in the car, as the man gives clear directions, leading them directly to an obviously abandoned warehouse. He first makes Taehyung get out, so he has someone to aim at and make sure the other two follow suit before making them move forward to reach the back. Several visibly armed men seem to be whispering things to each other, before the sick man with the bandana pushes Jimin towards the middle.
« - Heal him. You can do it, can't you? If you don't, I'll shoot your two buddies. But first I'm banging the powder puff.
- I... I can't fix him. You got the wrong guy.
- What? What do you mean I got the wrong guy?! »
The fact that he raises his voice makes the beautiful Elyzabeth instantly tense up, although she's already tensed at the idea of being taken for a sexual object. She hesitates between taking several steps back and crying or trying not to have an anxiety attack. Closing her eyes tightly as she hears him start to panic, cursing several times as he starts aiming his gun at the three of them in a row.
« - Aren't you a doctor? Damn it, why didn't you say so, huh?!
- He's not a doctor, but I am.
- Oh, yeah? »
The gun turns to Taehyung and Jimin can be heard yelping as Elyzabeth takes a deep breath, trying to calm the anguish coursing through her veins. Without further ado, Dr. Kim strides into the middle of the room, confident as he look for why they had bothered to kidnap three people and the urgency of the situation. Lying before him, on the white and green hospital bed, a man appears to be fighting for his life. The wound in his abdomen and the blood covering his hands are a bad sign, and he wastes no time in ripping off his clothes.
« - Elyzabeth, I need assistance. Do you have a surgical kit? A suture kit? A scalpel at least?
The men stand open-mouthed, looking around like idiots before another voice echoes through it.
- Didn't you hear the doctor? Let's get him what he needs, damn it ! And get moving ! »
He doesn't need to shout to make himself understood, and like thousands of little ants setting off they all start to move, mostly in circles, while the newcomer grabs Elyzabeth rather violently by the arm, forcing her to join Taehyung already pressing on the bullet's impact.
« - It seems that Dr. Kim has called you my pretty, so let's get a move on.
- Hey, don't hurt her !
In a show of solidarity, and certainly thinking that the newcomer wasn't armed like his colleague, Jimin pounced on him, being easily dealt with by a punch that probably broke his nose, followed by a shout from the pretty Elyzabeth.
- Stay in your place. Just because you've got a nice ass doesn't mean you can touch me. »
Seeking her composure, Elyzabeth joins Taehyung, even more so when the guy with the bandana returns to point his gun at Jimin, seeming to understand the situation fairly well. When at last they have what they need, Taehyung is meticulous, as he is with every operation : opening cleanly, checking whether the bullet extraction is necessary or dangerous, before suturing cleanly and professionally. Asking his patient's friends to come and hold him, who doesn't seem to appreciate the raw sutures. When he's done, Taehyung turns to look at the assembly.
« - He needs a blood transfusion, he has lost too much, and antibiotics. Do you have paper and a pen?
One of the armed men looks at him, before taking a notebook out of his pocket with a Bic pen, and Taehyung takes it without thinking, writing several lines on it, before signing it.
- Do you need anything else ? Or can I go to sleep ? »

Medical licensing officials in multiple states are scrambling to stop nurses with fraudulent academic credentials from caring for patients, after three Florida schools were accused of selling thousands of bogus diplomas.
New York regulators told 903 nurses in recent weeks to either surrender their licenses or prove they were properly educated. Delaware and Washington state officials have yanked dozens of nursing licenses. Texas filed administrative charges against 23 nurses. More actions in additional states are expected.
In some cases, lawyers for the nurses contend states are questioning the credentials of caregivers who earned diplomas legitimately. But there's wide agreement in the industry that nurses with fraudulent degrees need to be rooted out.
"The public needs to know that when they’re the most fragile, when they’re sick, when they’re in a hospital bed, that the individual who is at their bedside has gone through the required training," said Jennifer Mensik Kennedy, president of the American Nurses Association union.
States are acting in the wake of Operation Nightingale, a federal investigation into what officials say was a wire fraud scheme in which several now-closed Florida nursing schools sold phony nursing diplomas and transcripts from 2016 to 2022. Twenty-five defendants, including school owners and alleged recruiters, have been charged, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida Markenzy Lapointe announced in late January. Those cases are pending.
About 7,600 students paid an average of $15,000 for bogus diplomas, according to prosecutors. Around 2,400 of those people then passed a licensing exam to obtain jobs as registered nurses and licensed practical nurses or vocational nurses in multiple states, prosecutors say.

How did so many test takers pass without the required classroom and clinical work? In some cases, they were experienced L.P.N.s seeking to become R.N.s. Some had been health care providers in other countries.
The nurses got jobs across the country, including at a hospital in Georgia, Veterans Affairs medical centers in Maryland and New York, a skilled nursing facility in Ohio, and an assisted living facility in New Jersey, according to court filings.
Students came not only from Florida, but also New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Texas and Delaware. Many of the students took their licensing exam in New York, where they can sit it multiple times, according to investigators.
Investigators identified the Florida nursing schools as the Palm Beach School of Nursing; Siena College, a school in Broward County that wasn't related to the college of the same name in New York; and the Sacred Heart International Institute, which was also based in Broward County and had no relation to a university with a similar name in Connecticut.
It was not entirely clear how many of the roughly 2,400 nurses with credentials from these schools are currently employed, or where.
Federal officials shared information so states could pursue nurses with phony academic credentials. Some states have taken action.
The Washington State Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission rescinded the R.N. licenses of 17 people and denied license applications for four. The Delaware Board of Nursing annulled 26 licenses. The Georgia Board of Nursing asked 22 nurses to voluntarily surrender their licenses.
TEEN GETS COLLEGE DIPLOMA BEFORE FINISHING HIGH SCHOOL
The 23 nurses facing possible license revocations in Texas can continue working while their disciplinary cases are pending. Texas Board of Nursing general counsel James "Dusty" Johnston said more charges could come as officials develop "the necessary information for each individual."
A spokesperson for Veterans Affairs said it removed 89 nurses "from patient care" nationwide last year immediately after being notified by federal officials. The agency has not found any instances of patients being harmed.
New York's Office of the Professions posted on the state education department's website that it expects some of the 903 licensees who attended the schools "did, in fact, attend required hours and clinicals and are properly licensed." Those people are being asked to have a qualified nursing program submit verification.
Attorneys for some of the nurses in New York and Georgia say nurses who legitimately earned diplomas are getting caught up in the investigation.
"There are obviously people who bought transcripts who are fraudulent and should not be practicing nursing under any circumstances," said Atlanta attorney Hahnah Williams. "But there are also people who went to those schools legitimately and did nothing wrong. And they are somehow being lumped together with the fraudulent nurses."
Williams said her clients are hardworking immigrants who went to schools that were accredited at the time and have since worked for many years without incident.
Similarly, attorney Jordan Fensterman in New York said he has clients who attended classes at one of the schools to finish up their R.N. degrees and then worked during the pandemic. He said those nurses deserve due process now.
The state board actions are taking place as hospitals across the nation try to deal with chronic staffing challenges.
"Hopefully, the number is smaller once the authorities sort things out," said Kennedy, the American Nurses Association president.

From one wicked cult to another, Zane really seemed to have a penchant for joining large, dysfunctional families as he would still lovingly refer to them. Although The New Religion hadn't exactly been a cult. Zane had gotten used to the reading and re-reading of the prophesized end, only ever referred to in the pamphlets The New Religion aptly named the true scriptures, and even assumed the occasional sleep overs out in the fields waiting for the rapture were a part of regular, daily life. A life he would have happily lived out until the inevitable (but never quite predictable) end if not for the loose lips of a close friend. At 15, wondering about what was left of their future with his childhood friend and destined wife if the townspeople had any say, Zane had let it slip that he sometimes wondered if any of the other boys ever had… those kind of feelings for their fellow choir boys.
Without much explanation or goodbye, Zane was part of the adoption system now. He kept his good manners and bright outlook but the internet made its mark on the unyielding belief that the world would soon end. It also gave him an idea of why his parents and family in belief had left him to fend for himself, thrown between families for the next three years. Despite his best efforts to connect and bond, most of those who housed him had their own lives to live and preferred the pay out for housing him to actual conversation. So the search for a new family continued.
Community college was a bust when it came to making friends (15 years of communication within a gated community left something to be desired) and his distaste for alcohol didn’t much help. With money in scarce quantity and no clear path for the future in college - it was hard to wonder what you wanted to be when you grew up when there wouldn’t be a world to grow up into - Zane signed up for a new religious mission. Just because his old family had lied about… well, almost everything, that didn’t mean he couldn’t believe in something… right?
So Shining Light, a non-profit charity group of stragglers like himself, took him in as one of their own, travelling to poor areas and providing assistance where they could. Zane started out as a grunt, carrying supplies and cleaning up after the unofficial medics but slowly he climbed up the ranks to medic in training. Informal and no diploma awarded but he was helping and the people he travelled with almost felt like a family. A family that regularly changed members and deployed people to different stations but still. Until the big implosion of his makeshift family due to lack of funding, stranding him in a small town in Maine with no family and no mission. At least he somewhat knew what he wanted to do with his life moving forward.
It was at the ER, hour 15 of his 16 hour shift, when an older woman approached him. The fangs gleaming in her mouth could have been from delirium after running around all night but no. She was indeed a vampire. Their clan - their family - was in trouble and Zane seemed like the kind of person to help anyone, mortality status included. She was right. And so he did. Not to mention that a nice, caring vampire spat in the face of all the "devil creatures" talk he could regularly overhear at the hospital.
Alma, the unofficial leader of their somewhat democratic clan, offered a safe space to stay surrounded by people (vampires) who treated him kinder than anyone had before. It did feel wrong at first, stealing blood from the ER but the warm embrace of a family that had been together for decades, centuries even, welcoming him as one of their own… it was almost too good to be true. So what if the way to stay here was to let them technically kill him?
