worth bringing up as sort of a corollary to my severance thoughts is that severance does an excellent job of showing that different forms of power & control (cult/corporation/family/government) tend to bleed and overlap and propagate in similar forms. in that particular vein, speaking as a cult survivor, it's worth saying specifically that it doesn't do much good to exceptionalize cults as a rare oddity of how societal power can sometimes take shape. lumon, though fictional, is a really good example of how those mechanisms of control exist in many forms throughout society and should be broken down and scrutinized when they do appear.

every year around this time I rewatch Julie and the Phantoms, and every year I am reminded how much heart this little tween show about grief and hope has
#more thoughts in the tags#it is at times what the kids call 'cringe' - or it would be - if it wasn't so earnest#sometimes you don't need a perfect budget or 20-somethings pretending to be teenagers#or a large following or sequel appeal#sometimes you don't need big complicated anythings to make a story that ought to be told or a show that ought to be seen#sometimes you need to cast children as child characters#and come up with a theme that everyone can feel on some level [death] [hope] [love]#and choose loud colorful costumes and big cheesy music numbers and silly gags and over-the-top bully characters for the FUN of it#and pour every ounce of heart you've got into it and if netflix cancels it after one season? you gave that one season your all#jatp#there's a difference between big-budget stories written to profit from lust or shock or violence--#--and stories that are written for younger people and dealing with something people of all ages will eventually encounter#stories that are written about characters who lean on loved ones and focus on what they can do with what they've got#characters who are determined not to waste their lives or the gifts they've been given and instead to push on with excellence#specifically in order to benefit others#and what a bonus if the young lead actress is an incredibly-talented darling who is not sexualized by any part of the show in any way#what a bonus-bonus if the other protagonists are three good-looking dead dudes from the 90's (just because the writers COULD)#who are so openly affectionate and brotherly and huggable that you genuinely watch and think 'I hate that they died'. and you're SUPPOSED t#that it perfectly portrays what a real healthy best-friendship looks like - both for girls AND boys#that it perfectly portrays what TEENAGERS can be like#(not the high school. the high school is insane. it is cartoonish. I am 98% sure current high schools aren't blue and furry like that.)#and the main ship? luke and julie? that is seven-layer bean dip romance right there#like an onion. LAYERS to unpack#they did not have to make the ghost boy who seems most unbothered by death go back to his parents' home and weep#where he thought no one could see him. weep over lost time and past mistakes he can never take back. because he was loved#and loved unconditionally even if things were hard sometimes. kids need to see that in shows#they need to see that good parents are not perfect AND good parents love you. and that YOU are not always right#and that life is too short to let the sun go down on your freaking anger. open up your mouth and talk to the people you love and try.#the nuance of the bully character? that Carrie is a hard worker and talented JUST LIKE JULIE#and using it for ALL the wrong reasons in all the wrong ways

The BBC and Red Planet Pictures have revealed that Don Gilet (Sherwood, EastEnders, The Beekeeper, Shetland) will be the new lead detective in ratings-smash crime drama Death in Paradise.
Making his debut in a feature-length Christmas special later this year, before a brand-new series in 2025, Gilet will play Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson - who arrives on the idyllic island of Saint Marie from London, and isn’t overly pleased with his new surroundings…
Gilet has recently begun filming in Guadeloupe, alongside returning Death in Paradise regulars Don Warrington, Shantol Jackson, Ginny Holder, Élizabeth Bourgine and Danny John-Jules.
Don Gilet says: “Being offered the new lead role in Death in Paradise feels like a deeply loved and incredibly precious jewel has been placed in my hands. This is a big show, with a big heart and the love continually grows for it. It is my intention to never lose sight of that and to remain grateful, humbled and dedicated. Even during those testing times when every sinew is screaming at me to run off the set and dive into the sea, swimming pool or an ice-cold beer – whichever happens to be closer at the time!
Tim Key, Executive Producer for Red Planet Pictures, says: “Don is an amazing actor and we’re delighted that he’s joining us as the show enters another exciting new era. We’ve got huge plans for

#thinking about him since I finish the route and for forever but my last reblog reminded me this post was chilling in my drafts#ngl it sounds a bit like me lol#I have a friend who's quick to cast judgement and to decide they won't be even dipping their feet in certain narratives#and that has always been insane to me#if you put on music I'll stay and listen#if the TV is playing a movie I'll watch it till the end#and if it's simply too much time into its runtime I'll make a point to watch it later#if there's a format I don't particularly enjoy I try my best to give it an opportunity time and time again#and despite all that I still feel I'm not doing my part#cuz one of my professors said we should purposefully go out of our way to consume media we don't like in an attempt to understand the world#and sorry I'm projecting atp#something something I'm the worst kind of person to be studying the major I'm studying#there's like x1000 worries that consume me and my every waking thought in relation to it#anyway...#oh to live for and because of stories#am I right?#Maybe I should make “what's the story that changed or saved your life?” my new ice breaker#tte hashihime manga is insane to me but that's how I feel about any additional Hashihime content#hashihime of the old book town is insane (positive) in every media format shape and form#and I love it for that

I had a weird dream the other night
#Listen to my problems#we had just found out on the news that a huge meteor was going to hit us and there was nothing we could do about it but enjoy the next two#minutes of our lives. my childhood best friend was just telling me about how shes never had strawberries dipped in chocolate so i#rushed home to prepare some. i could see a bunch of them outside the window dragging a couch out to watch the meteor as it fell#and i kept looking up nervously as i made it and in the final fifteen seconds i rushed out laughing in apology and thrust the bowl into her#hands and she made space for me on the couch with all our other friends and i fed her two and gobbled one down myself#they tasted pretty bad but we were both laughing about it and i fed her the last one#my fingers were pressed to her lips and they were so soft and the heat from the comet was practically boiling us and everything was cast in#orange and yellow and i pushed her against the sofa and hugged her and smeared the melted chocolate on her face and kissed her#we looked at each other grinning like crazy and she said thanks for the chocolates. and i was like :') and then it hit us#so what was that all about ?
