A wood veneer marquetry picture made for @sraksha from one of her drawings. (This picture is mirrored because I'm dumb and glued it with the wrong side facing up)
Cut with the Acmer P2 33W diode laser out of multiple different 0.6mm thick wood veneers. Most of the species used were in their natural state, but this also includes some through dyed and heat treated woods. (Red dyed birch and smoked oak for example)
Simplified process:
- Draw a new or turn an existing picture into a vector file
- Separate the picture into individual "puzzle" pieces, in the example below this was done in Lightburn.
- Different pieces are cut from the chosen woods with the laser, compensating the cut path settings if needed because even the color of wood changes how well it will be cut.
- The pieces are assembled and taped together into a sheet, which is then then glued on to a board (hopefully the right way around), in this case birch plywood.
- Glued piece is carefully sanded and finish applied.

What I have been up to recently...
It is probably more accurate to describe what I have not been up to, I have been feeling a bit meh, and so not really productive and this has been compounded by circumstance.
I had decided that I was going to either have to spend some money on repairing my K40 laser, which needs new mirrors, lenses and probably a new tube and only has a smaller than A4 work area, or buy a new one, and it would probably be a diode laser with a significantly larger work area.
Now the issue for me with diode lasers is that they don't cut transparent acrylic which a lot of my work has been made in and I like it.
So having hummed and harred for several weeks I eventually bought the diode laser and since I was as mentioned above feeling a bit meh when it arrived it sat in the box for a couple of days before I even opened it. Then to compound the issue the limit switch doesn't work properly, easily worked round but aggravating.
Eventually get it up and running and realise it makes a lot of smoke when cutting the card and plywood that I am now going to use so it needs a cabinet which takes up even more space in my kitchen than the K40 did.
So I start to think about going back to first principles and making some very simple automata and then my computer starts to report that my hard drive is failing and I need to back-up my files and replace the hard drive.
It would still boot, until it wouldn't, so I bought a new computer and had to find the passwords for all my accounts and have lost quite a lot of photos. At some point I may attempt to recover them, the hard drive still spins up it just wont boot.
So to the photos above, my new toy does cut 3mm plywood really well, and I am getting to grips with LaserGRBL and Inkscape instead of CorelDraw and am feeling a little more enthusiastic about things so time to do some serious playing with my new toys.

For cutting thicker materials, it is recommended to remove the acrylic protective cover and focus the laser head a few millimeters lower than the standard. In this way, the cutting performance will be much better.

At first glance, the Sculpfun S9 has significantly higher power output than the Sculpfun S6 Pro. We'll see if this is true in a later test.
The interval scale test here is used to show whether the laser focus shape is square or rectangular. The scanning interval gradually increases from 0.1mm to 0.5mm.
In this test, the Sculpfun S9 showed that the shape of the beam was very close to rectangular, as the vertical and horizontal sculpting was well balanced.
We will be able to estimate the exact spot shape later when we test the engraving on the anodized aluminum.
This is a test of engraving a small photo of 20mm size while varying the maximum laser power. Engraving photos is very slow because the laser head has to scan line by line like an inkjet printer. If you want to engrave a very large photo, be prepared to wait for hours :)
As we'll see below, the Sculpfun S9 is by far the best engraver for engraving photos. Photos look very sharp, with high detail and contrast.

There’s one tool that I’ve always wanted, but just not been able to justify. Actually, that’s a huge lie. The world is stuffed full of obscenely expensive tools that I would love to add to my collection, if only I were some sort of independently wealthy druglord of a cocaine empire. And then I’d probably have no time to play with the tools, because I’d be too busy killing informants or something.
Where was I? Oh yes. That tool is a laser cutter. Ordinary folks don’t understand just how often I have to make brackets. Think about it: if I add even something as simple as an underhood light, it needs a bracket. And chances are whatever I want to see with that underhood light – for instance, the intake manifold gasket I just ventilated with a bull elephant’s worth of boost – could also be made out of a piece of steel or cork that was cut to precision tolerances by an immortal, perfect machine.
And it’s not just useful for the car. I’m sure I’d find all kinds of uses for it around the house. Why drive to the store to get a new lightswitch cover, when I can just spend several hours jigging up some acrylic stock and tweaking the parameters of a CAD file in order to cut one? Hell, I could make it out of titanium if I wanted.
Of course, the trap here is that a tool like a laser cutter is so complicated that it effectively becomes another project instantly. I can just see myself tweaking gantry drive belts, power supplies, and laser diodes to make sure I get the ultimate in cutting satisfaction. And eventually one very dark day will come, where I have to use a bigger laser cutter to make a part for a laser cutter... which will mandate the purchase of a bigger laser cutter.
