Notes Toward Finding Community, Or, How to Find Community When You Feel Isolated
Neoliberalism sucks for a ton of reasons. From the enclosure of every common, to the commodification of every creation, it feels like a muzzle on humanity that gets tighter and tighter. One of the most underexplored aspects of neoliberalism is the way in which it creates and reinforces isolation. People don’t really have communities outside of consumption or compulsion. This is problematic for a ton of reasons, namely that it prevents us from fulfilling our basic needs. Humans are social creatures. People need to have connections with folks. People may not all need the same levels or intensity of connections, but connections are important nonetheless. To lack in the ability to socialize meaningfully is to ensure worse health outcomes, mentally, emotionally, and physically. But, I don’t mean to freak you out. I think that there are steps we can take to star building community, bridging gaps with the people around us.
Think About What You Want
When folks feel very isolated, it can be easy to accept anything. If we’re in a vulnerable state, that could leave us open for ending up in precarious situations. One way to fight against this is to start from the position of imagining what community looks like. Is the type of space we want to occupy based around interests (fandom, hobbies)? Religions, spiritualities, social issues? If we are able to list the things that excite us, we have a good idea of what to look for, and can focus our efforts towards finding those spaces.
Find the Watering Holes
With the spaces we’re interested in on hand, youcan find where folks gather. Every community has virtual and/or in-person spaces. For example, if you’re a film fan, you can look for indie cinemas, folks putting on screenings, or look into film societies where you live. For activism, I’ve written a whole guide on how to get started. Looking for those spaces will allow you to start getting integrated in the space. Really think about how you can occupy the same physical and digital spaces of people who are into what you’re into.
Go Meet Folks
Now, this may be difficult, depending on your disposition. The quickest way to meet folks is to put yourself out there. It’s always vulnerable to put yourself on the line in this way, but it’s super necessary. When you’re in spaces with similar folks, you have talking points built in! You don’t have to worry if the folks around you will like movies at film club. If you are enjoyable to be around, through being nice, interesting, and/or being an active listener, you’ll be making connections in no time. If you’re not willing to talk to folks, it’ll be hard to make connections. Being open is an asset towards the end of getting connected. At the very least, consistently go to events and spaces in your interest area(s). Maybe you’ll bump into an extroverted person that can show you the ropes.
Be the Change You Want to See
As you get out there, think about how you can start catalyzing community. Maybe you host a dinner for neighbors. Maybe you start a book club. Or even a neighborhood garden, or cleanup event. In this way, you’re flipping the issue on its head. You’re creating the space to meet folks yourself. It’s like being a magnet, drawing others to you.
We need community. It’s a necessary thing, you know? So, hopefully, keeping these things in mind helps in that regard.

The Great Data Cleanup: A Database Design Adventure
As a budding database engineer, I found myself in a situation that was both daunting and hilarious. Our company's application was running slower than a turtle in peanut butter, and no one could figure out why. That is, until I decided to take a closer look at the database design.
It all began when my boss, a stern woman with a penchant for dramatic entrances, stormed into my cubicle. "Listen up, rookie," she barked (despite the fact that I was quite experienced by this point). "The marketing team is in an uproar over the app's performance. Think you can sort this mess out?"
Challenge accepted! I cracked my knuckles, took a deep breath, and dove headfirst into the database, ready to untangle the digital spaghetti.
The schema was a sight to behold—if you were a fan of chaos, that is. Tables were crammed with redundant data, and the relationships between them made as much sense as a platypus in a tuxedo.
"Okay," I told myself, "time to unleash the power of database normalization."
First, I identified the main entities—clients, transactions, products, and so forth. Then, I dissected each entity into its basic components, ruthlessly eliminating any unnecessary duplication.
For example, the original "clients" table was a hot mess. It had fields for the client's name, address, phone number, and email, but it also inexplicably included fields for the account manager's name and contact information. Data redundancy alert!
So, I created a new "account_managers" table to store all that information, and linked the clients back to their account managers using a foreign key. Boom! Normalized.
Next, I tackled the transactions table. It was a jumble of product details, shipping info, and payment data. I split it into three distinct tables—one for the transaction header, one for the line items, and one for the shipping and payment details.
"This is starting to look promising," I thought, giving myself an imaginary high-five.
After several more rounds of table splitting and relationship building, the database was looking sleek, streamlined, and ready for action. I couldn't wait to see the results.
Sure enough, the next day, when the marketing team tested the app, it was like night and day. The pages loaded in a flash, and the users were practically singing my praises (okay, maybe not singing, but definitely less cranky).
My boss, who was not one for effusive praise, gave me a rare smile and said, "Good job, rookie. I knew you had it in you."
From that day forward, I became the go-to person for all things database-related. And you know what? I actually enjoyed the challenge. It's like solving a complex puzzle, but with a lot more coffee and SQL.
So, if you ever find yourself dealing with a sluggish app and a tangled database, don't panic. Grab a strong cup of coffee, roll up your sleeves, and dive into the normalization process. Trust me, your users (and your boss) will be eternally grateful.

Here's the step-by-step process I used to normalize the database and resolve the performance issues. I used an online database design tool to visualize this design. Here's what I did:

After these normalization steps, the database structure was much cleaner and more efficient. Here's how the relationships between the tables would look:

By separating the data into these normalized tables, we eliminated data redundancy, improved data integrity, and made the database more scalable. The application's performance should now be significantly faster, as the database can efficiently retrieve and process the data it needs.
Conclusion
After a whirlwind week of wrestling with spreadsheets and SQL queries, the database normalization project was complete. I leaned back, took a deep breath, and admired my work.
The previously chaotic mess of data had been transformed into a sleek, efficient database structure. Redundant information was a thing of the past, and the performance was snappy.
I couldn't wait to show my boss the results. As I walked into her office, she looked up with a hopeful glint in her eye.
"Well, rookie," she began, "any progress on that database issue?"
I grinned. "Absolutely. Let me show you."
I pulled up the new database schema on her screen, walking her through each step of the normalization process. Her eyes widened with every explanation.

Leo Okagawa has recently been known for performing improvised music on electronics at venues in the Tokyo area. On the other hand, he has long been creating “composed” works using environmental sounds, analog noises and electronics.
This CD consists of pieces in the latter category. Okagawa made 43 tracks from his direct recordings (each a few minutes long) of sounds he encountered in various locations between June and August 2023, then put them together without edits to create this 72-minute-long field recording masterpiece. Although taken on different days, the 43 tracks follow the flow of a summer day from early morning to dusk. The myriad sounds captured in changing locations hit the listener’s ears in a dynamic way.

本CDは、岡川の後者の作品群に属する一枚。2023年6月から8月にかけて色々な場所で出会った音をそのまま数分間録音し43のトラックを作って、編集なしで並べた72分に及ぶフィールド・レコーディングの大作。43のトラックは、録音した日は違えども、夏の早朝から夕暮れ時へと時の流れに沿って進んでゆき、場所を変えながらそこで捉えた音の数々が聴く者の耳にダイナミックに飛び込んでく���。

Bandcamp Daily: The Best Field Recordings on Bandcamp: January 2024 Between June and August of last year, Leo Okagawa carried his Zoom H4n recorder with him everywhere he went, capturing small moments throughout his day. He then assembled these clips into a narrative of a representative summer day in Tokyo, organizing them chronologically from morning to night but otherwise leaving them completely unedited. Some tracks are almost shockingly mundane (“a man reading a newspaper at the library”) while others hold more intrinsic interest (“an ascetic monk passing by on the street”). But these pieces mean more in the aggregate than any single recording would suggest; cumulatively, they create a window onto another person’s experience of the world that is oddly touching in its simplicity. Vital Weekly: ‘Just Another Day’ by Leo Okagawa is a conceptual release, not a cover of an early Paul McCartney song. It’s Leo recording events from one day, just another, starting at 5:16 AM to 8:39 PM, sounds of a van waiting, birds, ‘an unmanned subway ticket gate’, the clean up of fallen leaves and such events of daily life. It’s a pity the cover says, ‘recorded June-August 2023’, which is not another day but highlights various days of recording. Isn’t it cheating? Okagawa chooses a fixed point and starts recording with no overdubs. It’s an exciting release and, for Ftarri, a surprising one, seeing they have very few that deal with field recordings and not in this way. It’s something one would expect from a label such as Gruenrekorder. It’s fine work, but for the experienced listener to field recordings, and I think I am one of them, not a big surprise. It’s a straightforward documentation of life in the city (and I assume it’s Tokyo). Okagawa made a great selection, that much is clear, and it depicts life in the big city. Beyond that, I am lost. Adding a Character Model in Maya
1. Access the Model:
Open Generate > Get Brush or go to Windows > General Editor > Content Browser.
Navigate to Modeling > Base Mesh and select a character model.
2. Adjust the Model:
Adapt the characters size to your scene as necessary.
Adding an Advanced Skeleton & Rigging
1. Quick Rig Setup:
Open Quick Rig and switch to Step-by-Step Mode.
Click the Plus (+) icon to create a new rig.
Create your character mesh and set up the skeleton.
2. Align the Joints:
Set joints in proper position within the body.
Use Duplicate Movements (User Adjustment Guides) for accurate joint placement.
Click Create & Update to finalize the rig.
3. Bind the Mesh to the Rig:
Go to Skinning > Create & Update to bind the character model to the skeleton.
Correcting Deformities with Weight Painting
1. Enter Weight Painting:
Open Skin > Paint Skin Weights.
Select the Mesh, then Ctrl + Click the rig to display weight areas.
2. Weight Paint Refining:
White weights show weight influence���use Ctrl + painting to remove unwanted areas.
Adjust opacity for smoother blending.
Test weight paint in different rig positions to ensure motion is smooth.
3. Final Tips:
Save frequently while working.
Weight painting does take time but is worth it to have smooth animations.

Rigging is the addition of a digital skeleton to enable character animation.
It enables movement and deformation of a 3D model.
Mesh cleanup and UV unwrapping must be completed prior to rigging to enable texturing and deformations.
2. Pre-Rigging Preparations
Mesh Cleanup: Ready the model for rigging. If the mesh is not symmetrical:
1. Manually move vertices to fix symmetry.
2. Choose the model > Check vertices (double-click to examine).
3. Go to Edit Mesh > Symmetrize and select the middle edge.
UV Unwrapping:
Correct UV unwrapping must be done before texturing.
Inspect the UVs and texture before proceeding to rigging.

2. Weight Painting (Modify skin influence on the rig)

To mirror joints:
Skin > Bind Skin > Selected Joints > Apply & Close
Adding Animation Controls:
1. Create > NURBS Primitives > Circle
2. Scale smaller and place near the corresponding joints.
3. Duplicate and place near each joint.
4. Select all control setup > Modify > Transform
5. Select control > Freeze Transformations
