Some Of The Different Lineages In Vodou.
This religion has many branches and styles of voodoo practices, just like there's different types of Christians, Baptist, Methodist, Catholic, etc, but there still all Christians. Now some of the most common branches/ lineages, are the
1 Asson Lineage. Is the most common one that most will know of. This lineage, and the asson, comes from the royal lineage and line of Vodou priests of Dahomey. Thus this lineage and it’s ceremonies focus most of their attention on serving the Spirits of Dahomey (Rada Lwa) as well as the Nago Nasyon. The Lwa Racine, Root Lwa, or Lwa from Western Africa are the foundation of this lineage as well is the rattle with the glass beads fillee with snake vertebrae.
2 The Tcha Tcha Lineage. The Tcha Tcha lineage is another that you might have herd of, it still can be found in the North of Haiti, it is another major lineage within Haitian Vodou and uses the rattle as well. It is the primary lineage that is practiced within the Dominican Republic. In 21 Divisiones and in the tchatcha lineage of Haitian vodou, initiation is done differently and the temples are organized differently.
The way it is practiced does vary from House to House. I mean that Ceremonies conducted in the Asson Lineage do not vary from House to House. In the Tcha Tcha lineage ceremonies do tend to have more variation between house to house.
3 Vodou Deka or Deka Lineage. This lineage is found in the temples at Souvenance and Soukri.
There are also other related lineages which focus more primarily on the magical aspect rather than the religion side of it. Some of the more common lineages for these are known as
1 Makaya.
2 Sanpwel.
3 Sect Wouj.
4 Bizango.
Those are just a few but there are more.
Some of these lineages do have initiation rites, where some of the others do not. Haitian Vodou includes and mixes various influences, spiritual cultures and practices, primarily those of Catholicism, African Traditions/Religions from different nations or tribes (Dahomey, Kongo, Ibo, Nago, Taino Indians & so on). They are referred to as synchretic religions. (See my post on different styles of voodoo)
Within the Asson & Tcha Tcha Lineages we commonly see Priests simply referring to themselves as a Houngan or Mambo or a Sevite. Also Houngan or Mambo Tcha Tcha or Kwa Kwa, in the Taca Taca lineages, also there sometimes referred to Houngan or Mambo Djakout.
Houngan or Mambo Djakout: are Priest of Vodou who does not lead a temple or Sosyete. It is said he keeps all his important things in a straw bag (to me they carry it like the doctors would back in the day.) They also would have a altar room (badji) where they help others by using their magickal workings. These priests learn from a more of a family practice (Similar to Hoodoo) which does not utilize an asson-style kanzo, but some tcha-tcha communities may use it too I heard. They can be non initiated or initiated within the Tcha Tcha lineage. But the ones are not initiated are very knowledgeable in Vodou and are trained usely by family. (I would say again they have similarities like Hoodoo) Some Vodou Priests, though not all, may have a temple or lead a congregation In the Hounfor, or Temple, he leads public ceremonies and services to the Vodou Spirits, helps people, has ceremonies for his congregation etc.
A Boko: is a term that usually refers to a Priest who specializes in the right hand magic (positive) & left hand magick (negative or agressive magick). They may or may not be initiated. They frequently work alone and not with a Sosyete at all. He is what is considered a hired specialist.
Bokors: they are priest and they have secret societies also. They are Makaya and Bizango. They're I never focus is on what one may consider dark magic or sorcery; their practitioners use curses and incantations designed to cause harm. As opposed to Petwo and Rada Vodou, whose goals are to support and guide life. The Makaya and Bizango employ practices harnessed against life these Bokors are the ones you hear turing people into zombies. (They're dangerous)
Last on Initiation Each lineage initiation is done very differently and a initiation in a tchatcha lineage does not give one the license to do ceremonies or do spiritual work in an asson house, they are not swappable (I heard this has become an issue in diaspora)
None is better than the other and neither holds more power, as both are Ginen/from the spirits.
Hope you enjoyed this post.
