i feel like i just got so used to ciri and how natural ciri and geralt’s relationship left, via being introduced to the witcher via witcher 3, and then reading the middle of the saga before i finished the short stories…
that i never really innately picked up on the fact that ciri turning out to be geralt’s daughter and not his son was… uhm, part of the entire surprise, let’s put it that way :’)
geralt and ciri are just soooo natural as a father and daughter duo that i can’t imagine it any other way, if ciri had been a boy this would have been way less remarkable as a series, there would be no witcher series as we know it. so to me ciri being a girl was the normal and default, expected way things were supposed to go.
even when i read a question of price-sword of destiny-something more for the first times, i was like “ok” when ciri being a girl was a switch of expectations: geralt (and, supposedly, the reader) having expected pavetta to have a son. like… “alright, it’s a girl, so what.”
i had to be informed about how this was an intentional shock… not only because i’m not a parent, but i mean, well, ultrasounds get mixed up all the time, right… it’s not so uncommon to have a kid and be surprised by the gender…
and because of this, i was more inclined to eyeroll at blood of elves being preachy with going over ciri’s biological sex what seemed like ten million times in chapters two and three… what with the whole “daughter has her first period” subplot, ciri upset over her lack of potential strongmanship, and the witchers mostly relying on triss for guidance in raising a girl. the moral being both just raise her like any other child” and “be sensitive to her needs that you’re blind to…”
although i still think these segments have visibly aged and date the series (not inherently a bad thing, just a quality of it)… they do make more sense when i try to empathize more with the perspective of a new father… who didn’t know he was receiving a girl… who thought she died… who only got her back through a miracle… and having to raise a girl… that’s not a young child anymore, not yet a teen, but is very shortly going to start going through puberty?! it’s like growing up in the desert, just learning what water is, and then getting thrown into the ocean.
because “having to raise a girl” still doesn’t seem that strange to me, but then i remember geralt didn’t see a woman and only had heard about them as a concept until he was an adult (because “warrior-monk” realness), he grew up with a hole in his heart that his absent mother bore, he lives in a highly gendered society, he experiences hostility from everybody of course but especially from women and girls, who take fright at him for… specific reasons explained by the old women in edge of the world…
no, geralt’s not helpless, but i forget, because he acts normal, but… (i mean, although he has issues, he could have really gone off his rocker with regards to women, a little sacrifice confirms this and vilgefortz embodies this) i forget that geralt’s inexperience with women… mostly manifesting in anxiety and both uncertain and impulsive behavior… like ghosting with a nosegay of flowers, the “dear friend” and all… would affect his view of the gender as a whole, including how he sees ciri. and it does.
in his situation, yes, having to raise a girl does intensify the element of “what the fuck am i doing”. especially as a single dad.
and although i do like it when the pov shifts from geralt in the saga but just to another person in the room, for how he becomes more of a distant and enigmatic figure, seeing him through others’ eyes always makes fills me with this uncertainty. buuuut, i would fucking adore blood of elves chapters two and three through geralt’s eyes just for how much of an emotional wreck he must have been… and trying not to show it to her :(

how often do you think nikolai uses his skill to steal things?
depends on whether or not you consider misplacing items the same as stealing them (he only borrowed that telephone pole, it’s not his fault that things got so heated he didn’t get a chance to put it back… there’s so many of them around anyway, who’s gonna miss one? he even left it in a public place, if the city really wants it back so badly, they can send someone out there to get it). he certainly uses it to borrow things without asking and leave them in increasingly absurd places for the owner to find (but dos, why wouldn’t laptop go in the fridge? you’ve been complaining about the cpu overheating all week! the shampoo bottle looks way less lonely between the condiments too. where’s the mouthwash, you ask? well… smash cut to fukuchi experiencing a whole new flavour of hangover). stealing things to keep though? not sure about that.
stealing is such a boring crime anyway, especially if you have the ultimate yoinking device. i think if fyodor puts him up to a (crucial, important, don’t-fuck-it-up-under-any-circumstances) task he will make use of it so as to not unnecessarily sacrifice efficiency, but otherwise if he wants to acquire things for the low low price of free, he’ll do it by way of stupidly elaborate bamboozlements... he'll trick you into giving him what he wants, no criminal activity needed. u know how clowns sometimes involve audience members, make them go along with stupid bits and such? kind of like that. he’s charismatic, confident, dramatic. he's an actor. he has your wallet, your phone and your firstborn before you realize he’s just fucking with you.

hc that throughout the years, jude takes leaves of absences form being high queen to go spend a couple months w vivi heather n oak !!! madoc too ig while he’s still exiled lol. ( vehemently ignoring the stolen heir’s canon sorry not sorry.) family bonding time, far away from the hubbub n chaos of the folk, n also the realization that jude doesn’t mind the mortal world all that much. yes it’s not faerieland, but it’s smth alright n she finds it soothing at times. she’s less unhinged n paranoid compared to when she was younger n the ptsd from her past has decreased in its intensity thanks to heather-mandated therapy ( heather only had to hear a couple times abt the duarte sisters’ fucked up childhood for her to plead jude to go to therapy—vivi alrdy has— n jude relented after 5 yrs of honest-to-god begging. big slay heather our mental health queen 🫂) and so that’s why she can even leave faerieland in someone else’s hands. these visits aren’t too frequent but they r long in their duration. 3-4 months tops. sometimes cardan comes along bcs the bed feels empty w/o jude n— Okay he’s js lonely w/o his wife. sue him. some poor hapless councilor advisor is forced to be in charge in their place (they send letters weekly. ‘please your majesties, when will you be returning home ?’ #urgent LOL) one day jude (age:37) notices grey hairs appearing on her head n she sort of freaks out. not in an entirely vain way either. more like:. oh fuck aren’t i supposed to not age as long as im in faeirieland ?? 3 long discussions later w cardan n the royal folk-human specialist, the conclusion that is reached is that bcs of jude’s visits to the mortal word, as infrequent as they r, theyve seemed to affect the way her body ages. or more aptly put, doesn’t age lol. jude gets some grey hair n lines on her face while still technically NOT aging. n she feels less panicky abt it bcs hey she’s not aging. sort of. meanwhile, cardan finds himself deeply enamored w jude’s grey hair n the subtle creases on her face that multiply slowly. he tells jude js so n she’s like i am not susceptible to flattery cardan greenbriar. hes Serious abt it tho n tells her that he isn’t saying that bcs it’ll make her feel better or wtv but bcs her aging evidently is actually beautiful to him. cue jude sour pursed lips for a bit as she gets these days when it comes to cardan being unbearably earnest towards her but she feels less weird abt the hair n lines so :)
anyways this was a long-winded niche asf hc that appeals to exactly only 2 ppl on this site n im not even confident in THAT estimate lol
#notice there’s no mention of taryn here ? hc that they never rlly resolve their relantionship issues properly n taryn n jude plan their#trips months apart bcs SISTER ISSUES !!!! also taryn is lowkey bitter abt the fact jude forgave cardan for everything he did to her but not#her#hc that they eventually get their shit together n it’s a long sob-filled heartbreaking reunion bcs at the end of theh day the duarte twins#love each other to pieces no matter what n that’s probably the worst part of their fractured relationship LOL#me: i want to see jude happy n content n the long process to being better n— basically everything left in unacknowledged in canon#[dua lipa crying.gif]#she’s so precious to me#it won’t ever happen realistically bcs of magic n shit but my jude ages elegantly vision is so strong ive been POSSESED#jude duarte#madoc family#jurdan#tfota#also idk if i’ll ever read tsh/tpt it js isn’t appealing to me from what little i’ve heard abt it lol#suren seems miskiin but also we should’ve all saved ourselves the trouble n let oak grow up permanently in the mortal world …. 🧘‍♀️#vivi duarte#heather#i will always be annoying abt heather i need more of her need her own little story abt meeting vivi LIKEE#tell me how she brushed away vivi’s inherent folk weirdness TELL ME ABT IT..#healed jurdan n the duarte twins will HEAL ME#lol#btw when i say jude forgave cardan i mean that boy had to pull out all the stops LMAO they even had a not-break-up for a while

"these chronically online gay people are taking over the fandom this is why i want to leave"
okay?? leave. you guys are the reason the bullying started in the fandom. this show was made for nerds let us have this. the mcs are literally dnd fans, will canonically cosplayed. those are the main characters. the show was never for you. you're allowed to enjoy it, but dont act as if we're the intruders. you came into our space, took over, and then started acting as if we showed up midway.
we're making the show unnecessarily gay? everything we're saying will never happen? this is clearly your first fandom because the thing about FANdom is that people can use these preexisting characters and have fun with them so they can create content outside of the show. so yes, we are going to be shipping characters that never showed any romantic interest to each other canonically. we will be shipping characters that never met. that is the POINT.
the theme of the show is accepting your differences and not trying to change parts of yourself for the sake of normalcy and general acceptance. we have fun with the out there fan theories, the impossible ships, the alternate universes. this always has been for fun. for some reason though, you have decided to have a stick up your ass at the idea that someone enjoying themself. have you never heard about curating your own online experience? the block button is free. use it.
stop acting as if you have some weird superiority above us. idgaf if you think it's cringy. it was never about you in the first place.

i don't think i've even told you part of the big conflict in bloodwood other than th two factions split between who wants to win the game and who doesn't, but basically wyatt and hans are kind of the faces of their respective factions (fun because they happen to be life and death, opposites) and they have so much personal drama going on outside of this but it bleeds into the main conflict so much lol. basically hans was raising wyatt for quite a while after wyatt first arrived there and wyatt got attached to hans; as the first parent figure in his life who treated him normal. wyatt was extremely abused so it was super life changing to have a parental figure who loved him and let him eat as much as he wanted and encouraged his gnc behavior. i decided that despite saying hayden and wyatt have always aged normally that's not really true, actually for a while they remained kids longer than they normally would have, so wyatt spent maybe fourish years being the same age while hans parented him and hayden unconsciously followed suit since your mental mindset can affect your aging there. hayden was never as close to hans as wyatt was because hayden viewed him as this guy trying to replace his own parents, even though his parents weren't perfect he still loved them so he didn't like this rando ass guy trying to play mommy and daddy with him yknow. but he understood why wyatt needed hans, it's just sometimes hayden could see the red flags where wyatt couldn't.
the thing about hans is that while at heart he's a good person, he can be toxic in ways he doesn't realize. i think ive mentioned before that he thinks he knows whats best for other people thus he tries to control them, its out of caring for them but it leaves people feeling like he doesn't want them to have agency. hans is very stubborn and set in his ways, and he's prone to superstition (as someone who's very religious) and he tends to view people (especially children) disobeying him as them straying from gods guidance or whatever the fuck. the reason he remains close to seraphine for so long is because they're both very similar but also after nepha died seraphine became sick and weak, and with hans as her caretaker she doesn't really have Room to disagree with him.
it doesn't help that a twist in the story is that during the reign of a previous death piece, nepha had possessed them (death) into doing a whole thing where they rendered lottie unconscious to use her trust piece powers to influence certain other pieces. that's why you don't tend to see me talking about lottie a lot, she's out of commission for a good chunk of the story. she's locked up tight in a stronghold and nobody can get in, and everyone was led to believe it was of her own volition; the trust piece losing her trust in everyone else and retreating to solitude. lottie's powers were affecting both hans and seraphine, strengthening their beliefs to the point of delusion in favor of nepha, which is why they refused to believe wyatt about nepha being evil no matter what he did to the point of it being kind of ridiculous.
so hans' beliefs are very unshakable and he tends to finds excuses for every little thing to validate them. this is why when hans first finds out that wyatt is the death piece (it took a minute since multiple pieces had recently died so they didn't quite know who was who during that period) it changed how hans viewed wyatt quite a bit. at this point it was basically prophecy that every death piece up until that point had killed at least one person (a lot of this had to do with nepha possessing them to do so, but hans doesn't know this obviously) so he begins to believe wyatt is dangerous and is concerned about it. he's basically waiting for wyatt to become this problem child despite wyatt being nothing but obedient and perfect until this point, wanting to be the perfect child to his new parent. it was around this time that nepha tried to possess wyatt but wyatt severed their connection damning her to the afterlife, so of course wyatt tried to tell hans about this and hans wouldn't believe it at all, both due to his inherent bias towards nepha being so perfect during her life, plus the artificial bias created by lottie's powers. this was hans' sign that wyatt was actually becoming the problem he envisioned him being.
sensing the change in hans' behavior towards him, wyatt begins to become more lax about the way he acts, trying less to impress hans and acting more like himself. wyatt was naturally a very timid and quiet child but as he settled into a """normal""" life free of abuse he started trying less hard to be perfect, starting to disobey hans (the piercings for example). he and hayden start going out into the wilds without permission, which to be fair to hans is super dangerous and stupid of them to do, and hans gets more and more paranoid about this problem child who's getting out of control or whatever.
it's around this time that kimberly's brother (GUESS WHO FORGOT HIS NAME AGAINNNNN LMAOOOOO) arrives in the game and he is hans' new golden child. the thing about hans is that he wants to be a parent so bad but is just so bad at it. every kid he's raised over the years has turned their backs on him (and then died for unrelated reasons) so whenever a new teen comes around he latches onto them and tries to be their new mom. the thing is this guy is Really good at being a golden child, and being the justice piece really boosts his resume. as you know wyatt and this guy don't get along at all and end up fighting, and this boy is Actually dangerous and ends up genuinely trying to kill wyatt. wyatt defends himself and ends up using doom for the first time, burning the kid on his face. this is Super it for hans, his suspicions are confirmed that wyatt is dangerous and scary. he doesn't believe wyatt that it was self defense. this leads wyatt to essentially snap, the innocence of a kid who got away from his abuser and had a happy wholesome few years was gone. he came to the conclusion that adults just could not be trusted and that nobody would accept him for who he is. he and hayden ran away into the wilds and when hans tried following them wyatt had a huge burst of power to open up a chasm in the floor which filled with doom, creating a huge river of doom. it officially symbolized the rift between two factions. it was wyatt's first huge burst like this, something that comes from strong emotion that he can't usually do.
wyatt and hayden survived by themselves out in the wild for a while, this is when they started aging again normally. it was hard because there's demons all over and they couldn't even control their powers yet. it's around this time that the previous time and love pieces (who i haven't named yet) are on their own mission to kill the identity piece, one of bubs' precious "incarnations." it's during this time that bubs is almost animalistic in behavior, drenched in rage and constantly uncontrollably shapeshifting into vile looking creatures. the time and love pieces hunt her like an animal, knowing that they can never achieve the unity needed to win the game if identity can't coexist with them. they've used technology left over by a previous fear piece that bubs had killed just before hayden replaced them. they were cuffs that would cancel out bubs super strength, if they could just lock them on her she would be powerless to fight back and they could finally kill her. they didn't view her as human at this point, more like just another demon to kill. they managed to cut off one of bubs' fingers which forced her back into a humanoid form and stunned her, and they managed to force the cuffs on. she was flailing and fighting and as they were ready to kill her, suddenly doom manifested on the chains of the cuffs which dissolved them allowing bubs to fight back. she killed them both then. (these two would be replaced by xun and kimberly some time after.)
understanding that the death piece had killed her, she knew she had principles hardwired in her that she couldn't shake no matter how many incarnations she'd been through: if you help her she helps you. death had just saved her life so she owed him a debt. wyatt knew this, he'd been reading entries kept by a previous memory piece he'd found in the old city created by first fear. there's a lot of old settlements and structures made by old pieces in the wilds, their area of settlement had really shrunk over the years as more of the powerful ones died off. anyway, wyatt, still only 15 at this point, trembling with fear but jaded by his experiences, told bubs that he knew she made deals and that he needed to make a deal with her. she owed him her life so she would protect him and hayden.
bubs was not thrilled by this one bit, she was still an angry mess and now unable to shapeshift. but over time she allowed hayden to reverse engineer the cuffs. it took a Lot of coaxing and domesticating to get bubs to try on the cuffs of course, but once she finally put one on she found it was pretty nice not accidentally breaking anything she touched. she reluctantly helped hayden and wyatt restore first fear's city and she helped them learn how to use their powers and fight. along the way they met friendly demons who began helping the restoration and populated the village.
hans has a lot of regrets about wyatt and wants to see him sometimes, but never allows himself to truly acknowledge that he was wrong. it's not until lottie's influence is severed that hans begins to have his doubts, although his own natural biases still exist, and he retains his belief that he knows what's best for people and states that bubs was a bad influence on him. a lot of wyatt's personality comes from being raised by bubs, which is partially why he ended up kind of mean and standoffish, along side just being jaded from his experiences both in and outside of the game.
it's kind of a cruel twist of fate that wyatt does end up killing someone fulfilling the prophecy, once again in self defense it's the same guy. by this time lottie's influence has been severed but wyatt is just so angry about the whole thing. he snaps at hans screaming "you've been just waiting and waiting eager for me to kill someone to prove you right, well here it fucking is."
i honestly haven't decided whether or not these two actually ever repair their relationship but i'm thinking no. it's funny that they started out so wholesome while i've been churning this in my head for so many years but ive ruined them like this ajdjd also sorry this got so long i didn't think i would just dump a big story bit on you LMAO this is just part of the current canon i've been rechurning over the last year(?)ish.
