Supergirl should perhaps be the centrepiece of a blog celebrating strong female comic book characters, but Kara Zor-El, Kryptonian cousin of Superman and whose alternative identity was Linda Lee Danvers is a remarkably subdued super-heroine, particularly in her early years during which she suffers from chronic self-doubt and lack of confidence. The character, even in more recent incarnations, is often beset by loneliness, difficulty in forming relationships and very much aware of her subordinate status to her mighty male cousin. Supergirl was even killed off altogether by DC Comics in the 1980s and not relaunched until 2004. The character has secured renewed popularity thanks to the excellent TV show starring Melissa Benoist, which succeeds in highlighting Supergirl’s/Linda’s vulnerability but also her inter strength and refusal to accept the casual sexism she frequently encounters.
Some of this ambiguity has its roots in the very creation of Supergirl herself in the early 1960s - an era in comic book history when tough believable female characters were not favoured and, if they existed at all, tended to be portrayed as lesser versions of male heroes. Supergirl certainly suffered from this more than most when her entire early career depended on the support and approval of a paternalist Superman. By the time of the adventure featured here however, Supergirl had been “revealed” to the world and, adopted by the virtuous Danvers, had carved out a separate identity as Midvale’s very own super-heroine. Her supporting cast was becoming more intriguing too, featuring Comet the Super Horse (in reality an enchanted centaur); on/off boyfriend Dick Malverne and Lex Luthor’s own sister, the telepathic Lena Thorul who both aids and abets Supergirl throughout her Silver Age career.
The page featured is from the story The Girl Who Was Supergirl’s Double, which appeared in Action Comics #296 (January 1963). It was written by Leo Dorfman and illustrated by Jim Mooney.

Part of me really wants to make a “Kara is grabbing that Dick” joke, but I’ll just let the sweetness stand.
Even invulnerable Kara isn't above the "pretend to be scared at the movies to get a little sugah" trick. Action Comics 282

Silver age Supergirl character AU (because I love obscure characters)
Richard "Dick" Malverne
Richard Malverne (formerly known as Richard Wilson before his adoption, first appeared in 1959 ) was one of Kara's first real human friends with a "boy next door" personality. In the comics he was an orphan like Kara, he was described as Supergirl's "Lana Lang" and was a recurring character throughout her highschool and early adult days. When he first met Supergirl he quickly deduced that she was his friend Linda (Supergirl's earth name back then) and set up many elaborate schemes to prove it (he literally made a life size dummy that looked exactly like himself that would explode if Linda/kara used her xray vision on it, like bro that's dedication) he didn't have malicious intentions mind you, it's just that everyone in the silver age was insane. After a few failed attempts he eventually let the "i know you're Supergirl" thing go.
As an adult he later got cancer and told Kara on his deathbed that he always knew she was Supergirl but just let it go for her sake.
Calling him "Richie" in this AU
He's a positive, sweet lad who's a bit clumsy so people underestimate him, but he's a lot smarter than he seems.

[MASTERPOST] JOSH WIDDICOMBE: “NOT MY CUP OF TEA” (2025/2026 TOUR)
A masterpost of information related to Josh's upcoming 2025/2026 UK tour. Including pre-sale/general sale info, and venue information.
**THIS POST IS CURRENTLY WIP!!!!**
WAKE UP, LOSERS! Josh has announced his next tour for 2025/2026!
“Not My Cup of Tea” will be touring around the UK, starting this time next year! (September 2025-May 2026) His first tour since 2019!
BLURB: "Josh Widdicombe is back on tour, not again! By now he has almost certainly mastered the art of stand-up, either that or he has wasted the last 15 years of his life. Come along and decide for yourself. Expect it to be shorter and with lower production values than Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, but funnier and with more references to tea."
---
Also, I’m sure this’ll be the FIRST LEG (ha!) of the tour, so hold onto your hats, he’ll likely come to a venue near you! Guessing due to Josh's popularity, thanks to Parenting Hell, demand for him will have gone up a bit since 2019. Good luck!
---
TICKET INFO/DATES, PRESS ETC, BELOW THE CUT.
TICKET ACCESS INFO:
PRICES: £31-£37 (according to the Liverpool Philharmonic, may vary depending on venue)
PRE-SALE INFO:
Pre-sale will be on Thursday 19th September (11am), while general sale will be the following day.
Sign-up to Josh's mailing list BEFORE 9am on 19th September for pre-sale access.
As ever, don’t stick with the big name ticket websites - try to stick to the venues themselves, as that's where most the allocation of tickets will be! (tour dates and more info below the cut)
I'm sure I don't need to say it, and it's probably unlikely, but obviously... DON'T BUY FROM RESALE WEBSITES (Oasis say hi!). Do you want Hillsy calling you a dick??
Ticketmaster UK
ATG Tickets (tend to have their own members pre-sale too)

Any direct venue links will have the date/venue name displayed as a link and highlighted in BOLD. Will be updated as soon as we know them!

Karathao: they literally spend a whole issue holding hands and going on a flying date. PKJ come back.
Karadick and karajerro: I'm not that familiar with them + they seem kinda mid ngl
Karamaxima: I'm assuming that we are talking rebirth maxima here (although I like preboot maxima but not with Kara). They were cute! Should have kissed.

I was about to say that Dick Malverne is being a huge dick but Linda has like three other boyfriends (one of which is a horse) and like a ton of girls she’s definitely flirting with so like glass houses.

The Silver Age Supergirl gets in on the fm bondage act when she visits a strange parallel world, Gaea, in which society is run by teenagers and “adults” are second class citizens or criminals. The logic of this situation may be slightly baffling (and the Maid of Might certainly struggles with it) but the story is a glorious and surreal romp. In this panel, Supergirl apprehends and ties up a gang of what she takes to be leather jacketed thugs before realising through the reaction of the hostile teenaged crowd that these youths were in fact uniformed police officers trying to apprehend some “adult” terrorists.
The story then goes into full throttle weirdness when as Linda, Supergirl wins the Presidency of this adolescent United States (briefly occupying the “Green House”), before as Supergirl, being arrested as a criminal, convicted and exiled off planet. She uncharacteristically smashes the place up before leaving, after which the adults take over and introduce a murderous fascist dictatorship. The Girl of Steel returns to overthrow the baddies and is finally recognised as the heroine she always was by the juvenile population of Gaea. The petulant vandalism of course turned out to be a ploy to flush out the fascists in her administration, led by Gaea’s version of her Earth boyfriend, Dick Malverne.
The story is entitled The Exile of Steel, which appeared in Action Comics #345 (January 1967). Story by Leo Dorfman and art by Al Plastino.
