I'm gonna have to reread Dick killing the Joker. But like I'm 85% sure he was not okay with having killed the joker out of anger. Even after Batman brought the guy back. Dick was not okay with what he (Dick) had done. Maybe with time he would have been okay. But he holds to the same code Bruce does and a has that whole guilt-complex thing.
Of head canons are great and if I can ignore how Grant Morrison portrayed Talia or Lobdell (whatever his name is) wrote Kory & Roy. ... then certainly how the dude wrote that issue can be ignored. But I feel like I read something completely different rather then it just being head canons and fanon.
Of course memes about Jason being mad Joker's alive and Tim knowing Dick killed him remain amusing to me and fanfiction about it is very fun to read.

the progression of dick and jasons relationship over the years is honestly probably pretty consistent
Robin!Jason: would you love me if I was a worm :(
Dick, with much disdain: …is this a hypothetical or like. an upcoming scenario
Red Hood!Jason: would you love me if I killed a guy :(
Dick: is this a hypothetical or do you mean like. within the last 24 hours

There are so many Dick, Bruce, or Tim kills the Joker fics on AO3, meanwhile Barbara was the one talking about how The Joker should be the exception to the No Kill Rule years before Red Hood Jason even existed.

A “buddy” vigilante story where Jason and Tim go back in time during Dick’s time as Robin, when the Worlds Greatest Detective was still young.
Basically, they significantly change the past and in the most annoying way possible. Tim knows that no one will know it was them and has been pretty morally flexible about the whole thing. They go down the list of rogues, down the list of siblings, bickering about it the whole time.
Jason kills the Joker, Tim rescues Cass, and both of them try and get one over on the other about their past selves.
Because Tim tries to talk baby Jason into stealing the Bat’s tires early while Jason’s out murdering Zucco, and Jason’s out snatching Tiny Tim and his camera from rooftops trying to leave him gift wrapped in the batcave while Tim’s out stealing info from Luthor.
It’s one giant clusterfuck but they’re successful because Tim and Jason combined are absolutely lethal and no one ever saw them coming.
Meanwhile, they keep running into Robin and absolutely losing it over seeing their oldest brother so young and angry.
Dick tries to track them down after they killed Zucco, he wants to ask why. What the hell they could possibly be doing or why that would matter to them.
Tim pushes Jason off a roof.Jason lights Tim’s ancient computer on fire. Tim tears a book in half. Jason takes pictures of Tiny Tim and sets them as his wallpaper. It’s a comedy, your honor.
And probably the worst headache Batman will ever get.

people keep talking about Dick killing Joker as something he did for Jason (not true) when the much more interesting conversation we could be having is that Bruce revived Joker so Dick wouldn't have to live with the weight of taking someone else's life, therefore not only taking away all of Dick's autonomy in the situation but also making him have to live with the knowledge that his anger is capable of driving him to such lengths while also being aware that his anger won't fix a goddamn thing, which in turn makes him repress his negative emotions even more

I love that Barbara's slightly grey morality during her history as Oracle is just something half the batfam cannot acknowledge for the sake of their own mental health.
Steph: Oooh you used to work with the Suicide Squad? Did you ever have to kill people?
Babs: Well I-
Dick: Of course she didn't!
Cass: Barbara would never kill how dare you.
Babs, knowing full well everyone in the room knows that's a flat out lie:... Yeah sure. Let's go with that.

So I was thinking Jason kills he is one of the few members who are constantly breaking Bruce's code and if I had an older sibling or younger who is just constantly getting away with murder.
Who you gonna call Jason fucking Todd.
Dick gets a little too pissed off one night and kills a human trafficker. Hey little wing need a bit of a favor. Nevermind one night after too many nightmares calls him up and tells him all about Blockbuster. Jason's kill count is up by one and he's damn proud.
Now Tim can hide his own bodies he doesn't need help but it makes for good brotherly bonding. Soon they have a whole secret cemetery filled with League assassins. And if one night Tim decides as a show of good faith to gift a duffle bag with a clowns head that's no one's business.
Damian on the other hand doesn't even try like the annoying little brother he is drops heads at Jason's safe house. Will just even text him coordinates and tell him good luck. How he hides from Bruce, Jason has no idea. He even on occasion will kill people Jason was looking for and will bring them like a proud cat presenting a mouse.
None of the other bat kids ever do it Cass refuses to kill and sticks to it Duke keeps his options open but never needs his help.
On one hand he finds it annoying but in the deepest parts of him his brothers trust him enough with their dirty secrets, they lay their shame and anger at his door.
They trust him to guard their back and he never thought he would have that. So the next time a stupid bird calls he grabs his guns, then his shovels and walks out the door.

Dick: If you could kill one person, who would you choose?
Tim, no hesitation: Ra's al ghul
Damian: Oh, please. Like you would even be capable of-
Tim: There is a reason that man wants me on his side so bad.

Call me delulu for this one, but the parallel occurred to me whilst studying for an upcoming test and now it’s all I can think about so of course I had to post it.
The two times Dick went berserk over what had been done to Jason and I’m all here for it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The panel on the left is when Joker kidnapped Tim and made the mistake of mentioning Jason’s name. That famous moment that Dick *killed* Joker.
The panel on the right is Gotham War when Dick finds out Bruce kidnapped Jason and psychologically manipulated him.
Funny thing is, both times Tim stopped him, and the one he was a little late for. Makes me wonder how far Dick would have gone if Tim hadn’t been there to stop him beating Bruce.
[Im gonna put a little headcanon in the following, so beware.]
The parallel kinda occurred to me because I was imagining a scenario actually. Post Gotham war where Dick’s taking Jason away from Gotham and all it’s crazyness. So they’re in the car and Dick’s driving, looking out at the roadside and the sun’s beating down on lush green grass and he’s reminiscing about a forgotten memory buried deep in the treasure trove of his most cherished memories of a time long bygone. A memory of himself and Jason picnicking out near the manor grounds one day with Alfred and Bruce. And they were playing some game of chase or another that ended up in a bit of rough housing and lighthearted bickering and hearty laughter and—It turned out to be such a good day. A rare memory.
And what if they stopped on the way to picnic on the roadside, for old time’s sake? Because they’ve got a blanket in the back and they’ve already packed food for the road and basically they’ve got everything they’d need, and wouldn’t it be such a shame if they let that opportunity to go to waste?
So here they were now, stomachs full and lying on their backs, staring at a partly cloudy sky, playing a childish game of pointing out the shapes of passing clouds to each other. It’s a little stupid, and because it’s stupid they start arguing over pointless stupid details. A harmless argument that—ironically enough—develops into a round of rough housing, again. And maybe for just a moment they’d both allowed themselves to forget what they’re running away from. But a frown flashes over Jason’s expression for the barest of seconds and Dick just—stops.
They’ve ended up with Jason on his back and Dick over and above him, and Dick can’t help but caress his hair, touch the side of his face, checking his expression and body responses to make sure that Jason’s alright.
And Jason’s fine—Dick stop fussing, it was just a moment!
So Dick’s hand just drops and he’s moving away, not looking at Jason, not able to meet his eyes.
He’s holding himself in that way he does when his thoughts are chipping away at his soul, a sight that’s become recognizable to Jason over the years. “What happened?”
Nothing but the usual, he wants to say. Once again something terrible happened to you and I wasn’t there to stop it. To protect you. But I made sure to take out the simmering rage running through my vains out on the man responsible with my fists. Because that’s what I can do. Twice you needed me, and twice I wasn’t there. But I made sure they paid for it, right? I made sure of it.

Actually I DO think Bruce is justified in being upset if his kids/associates kill people. I think he is justified in wanting to do everything in his power to make sure his children don’t kill anyone at all. There’s many things he’s unreasonable about but I do not think he is being unreasonable at all there.

Anyone think it's interesting that some fans:
Dick: kills Joker out of anger. (Immediately regretting it and hating himself even after Bruce brought him back).
Some fans: Wow! So cool! He totally is so mad that Bruce brought Joker back! He doesn't regret killing that clown at all! He's was so happy Joker was finally dead! Poor guy.
Jason: calculatedly kills people. (He thinks the people should die and isn't shown to have any regret for most kills).
Some fans: Oh no! Jason experiences pit madness and kills people without even realizing it! He regrets each kill soooo bad!!! Poor guy.

Mini Prompt
"It's me or him, Bruce!" Jason screamed, green covering his vision as he held a gun to the Joker's head.
"Pull the trigger."
"What?!"
Batman Bruce His Dad simply tilted his head, voice quiet, emotionless almost.
"I have decapitated that thing no less than three times for what he did to you. Pull the trigger."

The fact that this is something that was said in-universe:
Tumblr media
Batman #408
I would really enjoy an issue which focused on the public's opinion on Batman letting children fight alongside him.

Trigger Warning: blades, mild torture, injuries, and what amounts to suicidal thoughts and actions (he lives at the end but he does need a hell of a lot of therapy)
Tim shudders, as best he can while bleeding and bruised and broken.
The Red Hood is above him, mechanical voice melding into the raspy deeper tones of an Older Jason Todd. His voice is hollow and cruel as he digs his blade into Tim’s flesh. It hurts. But, Tim thinks dazedly, having Robin, Tim’s Robin, hating Tim hurts worse.
“Wow, Replacement, no last words for the person you stole everything away from?”
Jason’s mocking him.
“Okay.”
“What’s that, Replacement?”
Tim is so incredibly tired. And the blade held to his neck is starting to look like comfort. Tim thinks-
“My last words. You- You want to hear it?”
His hero’s face tilts, green eyes sparking something deep within Tim’s memory. But he’s so tired.
“Sure, let’s see what kind of recruitment pitch you’ve got for me, Replacement.”
Cruel. So cruel. Mocking him with false warmth. But false warmth is better than the coldness of Drake manor, the coldness of Bruce’s grieving form or Dick’s smile, sometimes when he thinks Tim’s not looking.
Ah, Tim knew it. His Robin will always be better than any other heroes, even if the false warmth makes his heart hurt worse than the broken ribs he’s now sporting. That Hood is pressing a knee down on to keep him immobile. Not that Tim could move anywhere considering both of his legs are broken. Tim wonders what it is about him that makes it impossible for people to muster up warmth towards.
“Do you know why… why heroes are so… so loved?” He wheezes out. He doesn’t wait for a response from Hood. “It’s because… they choose good- they choose to better the world- to save people, even if… even if they weren’t saved themselves. No matter how much- the obstacles, there’s always, an obstacle. But they try anyways.” Tim has to wrap this up. He’s losing coherency. “It’s why… it’s why this is okay. You… you’re choosing to save… to save Gotham from the Joker. Ev’n if you weren’t saved yourself. You’re not… good. You kill.”
Red Hood- Jason, snarls. Tim, blinking slowly, admires the man’s green eyes. “That’s fucking right-”
“But, you can be. Y’re helping.” And because this is important, because Tim has an alter set up to mourn Jason, “You were my hero,” Tim says, and Jason stops short, expression blanking. “So. I’ll help- help remove an obstacle so… so you can keep helping. Helping people like… like me. Or, not like me. Something.”
With that, Tim summons the rest of his strength and presses his neck towards the blade, starting the process to slit his own throat.
Jason flings the knife away, expression crumbling in horror as he stares down at the child he just tortured.
And as Tim’s voice fades, as blood spills out of his neck, as Tim gives him time to retrieve the knife, Jason breaks.
Oh, Tim thinks. His eyes weren’t green. They’re supposed to be blue.
——
Jason sits beside the medical cot, the steady beeping of the heart monitor grounding him as he held two fingers on the kid’s- oh god, he’s a fucking kid, Todd, you monster- pulse.
Jason will grovel when Tim wakes up. Because he turned into the kid’s Joker and Willis and if there’s anything Jason won’t ever allow himself to turn into, it’d be those two. He crossed a line. If Tim wants him to rip his liver out and present it to him, Jason thinks he’d do it on the spot.
Fuck. He fucked up.
