To Bruce it's clear that something else is coming up and it's definitely magical and not something like mind control he tested Jason thoroughly to make sure heck all of them did

Bruce even tried asking questions about Jason's so-called beloved he needed to die to get back to to apparently Jason's beloved was a beautiful being with white hair and green eyes that had a crown with stars and the most beautiful smile and have puns that would make a Dick cringe

And every time that was always Jason's description of his beloved so Bruce has come to the conclusion that he might have been deceived magically by him being back when he was dead somehow so he was talking to John Constantine, Zatanna and Captain Marvel about this

Because in reality all Bruce wanted was for his son to want to live and give up this fantasy of going back to being dead Bruce just wanted Jason here so they could be a family here and now

But as Captain Marvel listened to Batman's retelling Red Hood's descriptive of his beloved he couldn't help to start mentally putting together clues that might be able to put together of High King Phantom's mourning and Red Hood's suicidal tendencies

So Captain Marvel decides to tell Batman that he knew of being able to help Red Hood and that tomorrow to bring Red Hood and the rest of his little brood with him and they can summon him and fix everything

After Zatanna and Constantine agreed to do the summoning circle tomorrow and they dispersed Billy couldn't help but feel a little bit guilty for lying to Batman but he also felt happy that he was going to be able to fix our relationship and his sleep schedule

Ok so AU where Jason remembers being dead and remembers what he did while he was dead. And now that he’s back? He’s fucking pissed. He doesn’t actually pay attention to anything while he’s with the league. All of his self preservation? Gone. He just wants to die again and be with his Ghost King boyfriend. That’s all!

Jason huffed as Robin pushed him out of the way of the bus. Goddamn it. He was so close that time. The stupid kid. Ruining his chances.

Jason didn’t even really care that he had been replaced. He had expected it. B was never sentimental and Jason was never anything more than a sidekick anyways. He was replaceable. That was already proven. Batman always had a Robin. It didn’t really matter who Robin was. It was a title, not a person.

After pretending to be thankful for the save, Jason decided to go back to the league. Ra’s was like super evil but he was also a dumbass. It wasn’t hard to set him off. Maybe he could get Ra’s to kill him if he was lucky. Probably not. Since Talia and Damian were there. Ra’s wasn’t really much of a man. Nothing more than an idiot who didn’t want to die. The complete opposite of Jason.

He knew Talia and Damian were concerned with his behavior. The only reason he was dipped in the pit in the first place was to spite the Batman. Hoping he would be out for blood. He wasn’t stupid. But instead of getting a broken boy urging for revenge, what they had gotten was a very annoyed teen with suicidal tendencies. And very strange interests.

Jason went into his room of sorts. It was the area they let him live in. He didn’t have much, just a bed and a dresser. The only reason he even lived with them at this point was because they gave him food. He had made it clear when he was brought back that he had no interest in revenge. He just wanted to be dead. It was where he belonged after all. It had upset Talia so much that she had set up a small are for him to live in right where she could always see him. Almost like League of Assassins’ version of suicide watch. It didn’t stop Jason from sneaking out and trying anyways.

He grabbed a book he stole from Ra’s a week ago. He left his little sleeping area and went to find the old bastard. He threw the book at him, hitting him in the face. He could hear it as the book broke Ra’s nose. Good.

“Do you have a death wish?” he asked.

“YES!” Jason screamed, “If I don’t die soon, I’ll be too old for my boyfriend! If I die and I can’t date Danny anymore because I’m too old, I’ll haunt your death cheating ass until the timeline implodes!”

“You have some serious issues Todd,” said Damian.

Jason didn’t care, he just hoped Danny was still waiting for him like he promised. He had to get home. He HAD to die.

I’m not a huge fan of de-aged fic, but when they’re written right, I LOVE them.

So I recently read one about Bruce when he got deaged to 8, right after his parents died, and Tim, Damian, and Duke has to deal with him until they decided to wake up Alfred.

And it got me thinking, who else saw their parents die right in front of them and was extremely traumatized? OH YEAH- that right, it’s DICK.

So please enjoy this idea I got.

(I was originally going to post this for Valentine’s Day but decided against it, so I’m posting it now.)

Tim sits on the couch in his shared place with his boyfriend, the TV blares bright colors, just a bit too bright, the animation is glitchy, and honestly it’s just old. Probably older than he is. But with the two eight years old on either side of him both enjoying it, he didn’t try to protest.

“Hey, Tim I’m home for date nigh-ttttttttt….. oh? Uh, what’s going on here?” Bernard asked as he entered and sat down his bag and looked at the two black haired kids on either side of him, they were both too old to be Damian, and none of Tim’s siblings had any kids- at least not from what he knew? Did Dick have a kid?? “Who- who’s this?”

Tim turned to him slowly and smiled gently, “Dick, Bruce, I’d like you to meet Bernard, my boyfriend.” Both of the black haired kids turned and Bernard almost jumped, god, they had brighter blue eyes than Tim did. This is why the Wayne’s scared him. Their eyes were just so… eughh… they needed brown contacts.

“Hello.” They greeted Bernard simultaneously.

“Uh… hi. Do you mind if I just…” He walked over and snatched his boyfriend away from the two kids and dragged him down the hall towards their bedroom before shutting the door and looking at him wide eyed, “What the fuck?”

Tim sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, “Look, Jason isn’t here and I was the next best person. Damian is getting ahold of Zatanna now. It’s- it’s a whole thing. But, no one else can watch them right now. We’re doing it in shifts until Zatanna can change them back, or it fades.”

If Bernard could see how many years he had left on his life, he’d be able to see that just took 10 off.

“Great… so no date night?”

“No date night.”

Character of the day:

Lance Bruner aka Robin #2

He was the second robin to take on the mantle after Dick Grayson.

He was both introduced and killed in the same issue: Brave and the bold #83 May 1969. Jason appeared in March 1983.

Thomas Wayne and Lances father were friends and had agreed many years earlier for the Wayne’s to take in Lance if anything were to happen to Lances parents.

Bruce took in Lance to prevent him from going to juvenile detention since it turns out Lance is a delinquent.

Lances mum died when he was 2 and because his father was an archaeologist, it meant that he had a neglected childhood growing up. (This is similar to how the Batfamily fans portray Tim Drakes childhood).

Bruce wanted to make him become a better person by making him volunteer in charity shops and work alongside the teen titans (they didn’t really like him and voiced their concerns to Dick). Wally especially said, “he’s making a mistake —a whopper” when he overheard Bruce saying he’s considering adopting Lance. Dick was adamant on his reformation.

He found out that Dick and Bruce were Batman and robin, and made a deal with a criminal by the name of Grantland Stark to sell them out. He found out that he made a serious mistake when Dick got injured, so he put on the Robin costume in the bat cave and took a bullet for Batman and Robin to save them.

In his final moments, he apologised profusely to Bruce, which made Batman learn a lesson about seeing the best in people. He was given a memorial in the gardens outside Wayne manor.

Headcanons:

He keeps to himself 99% of the time. The 1% is when he eats Alfred’s food.

If he were still alive all of the Batfamily members would lowkey avoid him including Jason and Damian.

He watches true crime podcasts and laughs at the gore.

His favourite justice league member is Green Lantern only because he goes to space all the time so he wouldn’t be a problem stopping him from doing crime.

Jason tried bonding with him over the fact that they both died but Lance only made it about himself, and quoted “You’re still a little boy in a man’s world you haven’t seen everything that i experienced”

He doesn’t eat Alfred’s cookies. 🤯

I feel like he could be Red X. Since Dick knows him and he found out that Dick and Bruce were Batman and Robin.

Your life would never be the same

Ever since the Wayne family laid their eyes on you, they were non-stop by your side. Suffocating, crushing you under the weight of their attention. For some people this would be a dream come true, but for you this was your personal hell.

It wasn't because your were shy, or had social anxiety or had trouble making friends, you just did not want their attention, you just wanted to be left alone. Enjoy the silence, the solitude without anyone disturbing it.

The worst part- you couldn't do anything about it. Sure living in the manor was very nice and you were thankful that at least the butler had some sense of privacy, but the rest of them probably didn’t even know that word.

You didn't really have a say in the matter of your stay, they would always appear just as you were about to leave the manor, as if they were watching you. As soon as you touched a door knob one of them would appear, be It Bruce, his kids or even the butler.There was no escape in sight, so trying to stay in your room all day seemed to be your only option.

But it seems as if a higher being just wanted to torture you. Dick would usually just barge into you room and announce "sibling time" as if it was a grant event, while you just glared at him. He is a big brother so you know that he feels responsible for keeping the family, especially the siblings, together and as the new part of the family, he probably felt like he had to be extra affectionate to you. Make you feel welcome with open arms, as if they did not force you to be here. He'd just drag you around, acting as if you were just another one of his siblings, treating you as if you too were enjoying the time spent together.

The others aren't better. You tried, really hard too, to get them to leave you alone, but as if a sickness fell all over them and they couldn't stop.

Jason built-like-a-tank Todd would always ramble about new books he read and he wouldn't stop. You tried to just walk away leave the room, get him to stop, speak over him, but he was persistent. He followed you around, ignoring the fact that you were hardly listening, too focused on glaring at him with all you hate. He knew you weren't listening, but did he care? No. The time was still spent with you, still in your presence and that seemed to be enough for him, just talking at you. Closed doors? Please, that won't keep him out for even a second.

The only "escape" was telling Jason about a new book you read. You knew he would listen, so if you fabricated a story about a book you read to get him off of you, then so be it. Jason would almost immediately walk towards the library, trying to "catch up" so you two could discuss it. Like a dog chasin a stick, he took of to the library, taking the chance to get closer to you.

Then there is Tim. God, even if he wasn’t physically there, you knew he was watching.

Hell, he had Microphones and Cameras in your room before you begged Alfred to tell him to remove them. It wasn't easy and you had to sacrifice some of your time.Tim loved taking pictures of you, be it with a digital camera or a Polaroid one, he just loved to capture every minute of you two being together. The deal was that Tim would remove every device he planted in your room and in exchange he got to take pictures of you during a specific amount of time. It wasn't perfect, but in the end, this was the only way to feel kind of safe in your room again. This meant that you only had to spent a certain amount of time with him while he could take his creepy photos of you, at least he would leave you alone for the rest of the day. However, there was always that uncomfortable feeling you got from him while he looked at you through the camera.

Duke Thomas was seen as the light of them family, but to you he probably resembled a swallowing shadow. He too was always around, but finding a way to "escape" him was probably the hardest. He could switch from topic to topic, always finding another interesting new fact to talk about. The only time you were sure you wouldn't keep talking is when the grandfather clock struck ten p.m. Alfred always came into your room to make sure you would get enough sleep, and no one would ever get in the way of that.

Sometimes you were lucky enough to come up with a "reasonable" excuse, something along the lines of "having promised to spent time with another sibling". Since time spent with you was premium, the siblings agreed that no one was allowed to disturb another and luckily for you, due to the hectic life of the Wayne's, there weren't set times for each sibling.

The youngest Wayne, Damian, was... okay? Sure, he was clingy, more physical than others, but he usually spent his time with you in the barn, where they kept the animals. It wasn’t the alone time you wanted but it was the only semi-alone time you would get. Damian wasn't overly talkative, a few one-sided conversation, but otherwise he was focused on you, not great but at least no overly enthusiastic talking. Another plus was the animals. Alfred the cat usually set up camp in your lap, purring like an engine while you pet him, by this time batcow was usually laid right behind you so you could lean against it. The other animals joined them around you as if sensing you exhaustion. Honestly wasn't so bad, excluding the child staring at you like you owed him your soul.

And finally there is Bruce Wayne. The Master of the family, the one that brought you here. You especially hated spending time with him, because of the way he looked at you, as if he were proud of you, it made your skin crawl. Bruce, surprisingly, loved spending any sort of meal with you, be it breakfast or supper, he loved spending it sitting opposite of you. You wished you could just take the food up to your room, but unfortunately Alfred forbade it and saying no to the butler was never going to happen. So you stayed at the table while Bruce held conversations with you, spanning from "how was your day?" to "we should spend more time together as family, its lovely." Just bullshit conversion as you try to enjoy your food. The only saving grace was Alfred the butler, who was adamant that conversations were held before and after the meals, since they had to be enjoyed while hot. Unfortunately escaping Bruce wasn't as easy, as he would guilt you into staying. It was complicated, you really just wanted to be left alone and yet being actually mean to any of them just felt wrong and just straight up leaving the table while Bruce talked so passionately also gnawed at your conscience. Especially when Alfred wouldsit with you two at the table, pouring a cup of tea for everyone. You knew that this was downtime for him. He deserved a break and you knew, that the only reason he took one was because of you. So you stayed, enjoying the tea, even if it was only because you felt guilty.

They knew that you hated spending time with them, that you wanted to be left alone, spend time in your room with no one else, just enjoy the silence. The way you recoiled at their touch, glared at them and just rolled your eyes whenever they started to speak, it hurt them. They knew what you thought of them and they felt bad, they really did, but could you really blame them?

To them you were just too precious, too important to be left alone, they had no other choice. It was for you best, really! Can't you see that it's all for your health and safety? Being alone all the time was bad for you so if they had to "bother" to keep you save then there was no other way. With time you would understand that in reality it was all just love. Endless love just for you.

Ok so how do we want this to start? With the court set up or begin with Jason being found by another ghost (maybe let Johnny and Kitty spot Jason and deal with being chased after and possibly assaulted by Batman while they are trying to get emergency treatment to Civilian Jason Todd as they clocked the core instability verging on collapse?)

Have it move to jason in the IR with The Unstoppable Mail Man helping escort him to the emergency room as a package. Kitty and Johnny run off to tattle to the IR Legal Systems about being attacked by another liminal for saving a dying corrupted halfa.

Dani is there helping get items she liberated from ‘haunt stealing mortals’ to get them to their proper homes in the realms. She has negative issues asking if any other groups knew about it and asks for a formal investigation to be launched into that particular dimension and timeline’s treatment of the halfa and the relationship between the Aggressive Liminal.

The findings are public record, and Dani keeps seeing Vlad Assumed Hero with everything she learns about this Bruce/Batman and how no one holds him accountable for what he does to his various liminal kids and clear lack of emotional boundaries—something deeply dangerous for liminals and halfas.

While Danny will be the judge, Dani makes a point to sit with Jason and bond with him as she’s been in his shoes. Someone who you think is good doesn’t see you as who you are, but who they want you to be and will do anything to force you into that mold, or have you die trying to force you into that mold.

Jason and Dani? Have a strange mentorship where Dani is mentoring Jason. He’s Her frightmate. Johnny, Kitty and Shadow have gained extended frightmate rights and also visit, helping stabilize the revenant-wraith-Justice-For-Ignored/ForgottenVictims-Seeker’s core bonds by being there as the rotting one to Bruce is surgically removed for Jason’s health.

There are debates over what to do with his other living frightmates—many who read as victims of Bruce’s emotional dependence on them since their childhood.

Those charges are to be handled later, especially the youngest born liminal with a child-brother-protection bond to Jason.

Meanwhile Danny is informed there’s a crime against a halfa and as the ‘head of the halfa clan’ he is expected to judge it. He is not allowed to know anything about the case until investigation and charges are settled on.

Sam volunteers to play security with Cujo for emotional support.

Tucker calls dibs on court scribe in part as he likes that job (he is letting on his babies do the work) and because he knows Danny will need him grounding him directly should these asshats try something.

Jazz is informed it is either her or another liminal allowed to take on the case. She meets with Jason and sees too much of the Dannies to not agree once he’s told what happened to him are Major Crimes in the IR and the trial is unavoidable. A failure to press charges in a trial would mean that halfas are the lesser beings that a chunk of the IR loves to throw back at the Dannies. That they will become like Vlad—a man driven by his own obsession to the point of trying to destroy the world when the object of his affections rejected him, as did the child of hers he deemed ‘perfect step child material’.

Jason agreed to press the charges. Not just against Bruce, but the whole JL. He knows they let Bruce grt away with a lot when it came to Dick, to him and even Tim and Stephanie. He can at least get Damian somewhere safer or force wellness checks by people Bruce won’t be able to bribe. Especially since the kid admitted to him he doesn’t want to be a vigilante like his dad. He wants to be a doctor and is trying to workout how to balance his volunteer hours, school and vigilante time.

Justice league judged through the eyes of a child.

Justice league, Dark Justice stood in a very, very large courtroom in the infinite realm.

The Young Justice and Teen Titans were in the front row seat with the Ghostly audience and as witnesses.

The court was in session for the Justice League and Dark Justice crime of Neglection and abuse of a Revenant close to collapsing due to a serious infestation of heavy tainted ectoplasm also known as Jason Todd also known as Red hood.

Jason, after he had gotten the proper care and cleansing blob ghosts weeks before to manifested shift in a proper halfa state sat on the other court side.

In ghost form, sat a 18 years old jason todd, in a reversed color palette robin suit that hasn't been seen since that very night.

The judge was a little boy with glowing white hair, neon green eyes with a DP hazmat suit, the court session being written by a modern looking pharaoh, the security were a lady who was similar to poison ivy except with black and purple hair and purple eyes with a giant glowing green dog.

The lawyer on Jason side was Jazz Fenton, and on the Justice League side was Dinah Lance.

And when someone were to ask why a Ghost king as a child was the judge afterward. There is nothing more honest than being judged through the eyes of a child.

I saw this page from the last (maybe?) Batman & Robin (maybe?) issue and I let it go, but actually, I have thoughts about it.

So, what's happening on this page I don't have for you and I'm not going to look for to add to this post? Well, Batman, Bruce, argues that Gotham needs Robin, and Jason answers that none of them give a fuck about Gotham, and they only were Robin to be loved by Bruce. And like, this is just wrong.

For Damian, this works. It is true that Damian did not care about Gotham, and he wanted to be Robin because he saw it as his birth right. After all, every son of Batman has been Robin, so Damian, as the blood son, he wanted that to strengthen his place in the family. Bruce did not want to make Damian Robin (remember that for later), as the boy wasn't fitting what Robin was, and Damian saw "becoming/being Robin" as the same as "being accepted" by his father. But this does not work for the other Robins.

Let's start with the most difficult one: Jason. The one they are making say shit like this every Tuesday and people take it as the truth. If we take the original way Jason became Robin, this is not true. In short, in the original version, after Jason literally borrowed some old Robin's costume behind everyone back, Dick explained how he is leaving Robin behind because he is too old now and becoming Nightwing, which leads him and Bruce to have an emotional moment, as Bruce got scared this meant Dick was cutting contact with him and Dick reassured him that it's not the case, he is just growing and becoming independent, but they will always be family. While his dad and brother are nearly crying over how much they love each other and yet cannot say it out loud, Jason, like the little sibling he is, decides that Dick, not being Robin anymore means it's free real estate for him to be Robin. So, he is celebrating becoming Robin, which neither Bruce or Dick asked him to be or told him he could. A lot of people love this version, it's very good. So, Jason didn't become Robin to be loved by Bruce here, but because that's the cool shit that his brother had and he is letting it behind, so that's his now. ANYWAY, I know y'all aren't going to accept this version, so let's go for the more official one, the next one (fuck any version after that, especially Nightwing: Year One, they just don't want to acknowledge that Bruce loves Jason and he was his son). In this one, Jason becomes Robin after a lil adventure. Batman makes a deal with him to go to Ma Gunn's school which is a front to train kids into becoming goons, so Jason tells Batman. Not certain that Batman believed him, he decided to take down Ma Gunn (who is doing a heist) ON HIS OWN, AT 12 YEARS OLD, AS A MALNOURISHED BOY. So Bruce decides that's his son now, he will die for him, and he's like "Wanna be Robin?" and the kid is like "Robin? Cool!". He didn't give a fuck if Batman loved him, Batman was, at this point, just a bit more trustworthy than everyone other adults. And Jason was refusing to go to the cops or social services, and he was like "I need nobody, I can take care of myself!", so Batman was using Robin to make the kid agree to come home with him and not live on the street (Jason is a feral kitten and Robin is some good old churu to get him to open up) And you can say that's my interpretation, but in the end, it's the 80s and this is a comic, the writers did not care about that shit, they just needed Batman to have a new Robin because Batman doesn't exist without Robin. Anyway, Bruce, at multiple moments through Jason's Robin era, did tell Jason he could stop being Robin if he wanted (remember that for later) and also tried to have Jason stop being Robin because he thought it wasn't good for him, WHICH JASON HEARD. Jason ran to Ethiopia after hearing Bruce talked about how he loved Jason and being Robin may be harming the kid, so he was going to stop him. People LOVES to say Jason did not want to be Robin, but y'all, if the boy did not care about justice, wtf is he trying to prove to Batman there's a better way to do it now? Why is he still being a vigilante as an adult? Nobody is forcing him to be doing this. He cares about Gotham, even if he is sometimes really bad at showing it or acting stupid (imo)

Now, about the others. Dick invented Robin after pursuing his parents' murder. Under Bob Kane, his creator, Bruce tells Dick that now that they brought justice to his parents, Dick can stop, and Dick is like "No, I want to help people, it's what my parents would have wanted." So, Dick may not care about Gotham itself, but he cares about people and that's why he becomes and stays Robin, to help, not to get Bruce to love him. And when Bruce fired him originally, he tells him that's because he loves him and can't watch him be hurt because of him, and Dick answers "I will just take another name and continue because I want to protect people". Don't insult Dick Grayson by implying he only did that for Bruce, how many times do they have to write him say it wasn't for it to enter their heads?!

Stephanie was already Spoiler, she was already trying to help Gotham, before becoming Robin. Being Robin was about proving her worth to Batman. She clearly gave a fuck about Gotham, or she would have stopped after all the attempts made by Bruce and Tim to make her stop. But I don't think she counts, as she was never Robin in the current main timeline.

Finally, Tim Drake. There's all the Robins from other universe, but also the "We are Robin" movement that was about Gotham, but it doesn't really matter for this. But Tim Drake, he is the one who said that Gotham needed Robin, Bruce disagreed. When this boy put on the suit of Batman’s dead son, we can all agree he did not think he was going to get loved by Batman for that. Tim became Robin because Gotham needed Robin, not to be loved.

So, in conclusion, what Jason is saying is pure bs. 100% blaming the writers, as even Bruce being like "Robin must exists, Gotham needs Robin" is bs, with his whole "being mad at Damian for not wanting to be a vigilante" they have been doing. I hope you remember what I told you to remember, because now is when it is useful. Not only he fought Tim on "Batman needs Robin", he also was against Damian being Robin and the kid was only made Robin by Alfred and Dick. And he has often tried to stop his kids from being Robin if he thought it was too dangerous for them. He also has told them multiple time they could stop. He is the guy giving them insane training because it is so dangerous, and they can give up if it's too much, it's okay, but they aren't going out if they can't follow the training. Bruce wished his kids did not want to be Robin. Bruce would NOT be against one of his kid dropping being a vigilante, it's a dream come true for him. A normal ass life where he doesn't have to worry about them fighting to death? Sign him up! (He still will worry like crazy, but they will not be fighting Deathstroke). (Just some modern pages of Bruce learning Tim was accepted at Ivy when Tim "died". Tim was afraid Bruce would be hurt if he stopped being a vigilante to study, but the story shows Bruce would not have been. This is far from the only time or the first time the subject of Bruce's kids and college is brought up. In the 70/80s, Bruce and Dick argued about college, as Dick wanted to drop out and Bruce was against it. During the same era, Bruce also vocalized to others how he wanted Jason to go to college one day.)

There's this trend in DC comics lately to paint Robin as something Bruce forced his kids to be for himself, and I hate it. It is erasing the truth, the historical context (for Jason, it's a superhero comic from the 80s, what are you expecting?), and I don't think any other hero is being criticized like this for having sidekicks (Does Green Arrow is treated like this too or is it fine for him to have child sidekicks?) They need to stop with that bs.

tim and bruce have an odd relationship to the rest of the family. they don’t act like father and son but it seems like they have a “deeper” bond than the others

bruce seems to take tim’s advice more seriously, bruce actually takes a break if tim tells him, tim still gets benched but not nearly as much as he should, and most confusingly, tim benched bruce once. not alfred benching bruce, TIM.

normally bruce has to be forced to take a break, and normally by alfred, but if tim says “you’re benched for a week” bruce? listens?

they have no idea why. some of them ask dick if he knows since he was there but he’s just as confused

and then despite all that there’s also such a strain between them? it’s really on the line of a professional relationship and almost a care taker. it’s very confusing. and then the times bruce gives tim a present or anything like that and tim stops and stares at him for a second, like he’s dissecting bruce. no one is able to fully figure it. until bruce is de-aged to tim’s robin era.

tim is very adamant about most of them, but especially jason and damian, do not reveal their names to him. for the time being they have a strictly professional relationship with their father who doesn’t know them.

they finally get some of the picture when they see tim start acting as bruce’s caretaker. tim switches between being gentle “hey, you need to sleep” to screaming at bruce. it always works. tim knows exactly which version bruce needs and it scares the team cause that has to require some practice

they’re then also thrown for a loop when they hear bruce call out jason’s name in a shocked voice, which makes sense cause he doesn’t know jason is alive but jason still has his helmet on so what? and then they hear a voice none of them have heard. except dick goes pale and jason’s breath hitches. and suddenly tim is responding to jason’s name and acting weird, almost like what some of dicks stories described jason as. and it’s so fucked up when they’re watching time act like someone else and bruce going along with it

the dynamic they’re getting is also fucked up once again when, during one of bruce’s really bad days, tim straight up acts like bruce’s parent. and bruce reacts well.

they’re all horrified by this. the realization that tim and bruce’s relationship has so many layers and that they do act like father and son sometimes. except bruce isn’t the father and tim isn’t the son

With the exception of Dick (acrobatics) and Cass (body language) none of the Batkids are THAT much better than the others at a certain skill

Yes Jason is a better shot

Yes Tim is a better detective

And on a technical level they’re much better

Sure

But that means that if they have a 0.001% chance of cracking a case or making a shot. There will be a noticeable difference between Tim being the character or say Damian.

Think of each skill like a normally distributed curve okay with the mean being your average hero/olympian/hacker/genius

Unless you are writing something you can comfortably say is complex/difficult enough to warrant drawing attention to the 3% difference. It’s annoying to bring it up

Because Dicks introduction is the fact he can do something the rest of the kids can’t to the point where it’s an identifier within his own story. It’s how Tim found him, a signature only he can do.

And Cass because she is genuinely cartoonishly cracked in her own storyline and in batfamily stuff she’s borderline a mind reader

(Could also argue Jason for supernatural stuff and the all blades)

These are exceptions because yeah

If you told me Jason, Dick or Steph cracked a difficult case in a run I wouldn’t treat it as shocking information

If you told me Tim, Dick or Damian managed a tricky shot with a firearm in a dire situation (like what happens in the Grayson run) it would be interesting, surprising but like not? Shocking?

If you told me that Jason did a quadruple summersault off a building and landed on his feet I’d be confused as shit

And even WITH Dick and Cass the other kids are still FREAKISHLY good at D&Cs special skills but they both have unignorable signatures

This is a very long winded way of saying when an author simplifies a character down to

“Oh look nice flippy one”

“Smart one”

“Angry gun one”

“Pet collector”

It’s annoying because you basically ignore all the interesting overlap

Like guess what Dick literally has a habit of collecting strays (see the rabbit and 3 legged dog he lives with in his apartment in the new run)

Tim is fucking badass and is very good at dealing with explosives

Damian is canonically currently thinking of leaving the family business and no longer being a hero to maybe focus on helping people in other ways

Jason occasionally works with magic and demon bullshit

And every single one of them is a genius okay literally every single one of them could get a masters in physics, chem, bio and history in like 2 weeks flat.

Their stats are stacked

All of them know enough info to be able to do 99% of a task and yeah someone might call Tim or Dick in for detective help or Jason for muscle and restraining backup but in 99% of cases THE OTHER CHARACTERS SHOULD BE EQUALLY competent

The coffee addict never sleeps perpetually tired Tim Drake thing is a widely accepted headcanon however that was elementary school tim but after he stayed up for a week straight subsisting entirely on coffee to decipher the bat weekly patrol schedule and how it aligns with rogue attacks/Arkham breakouts, he crashed then when he woke up it was fucking wednesday so he missed his chance to commemorate his discovery with pictures of Robin and he decided that shit would never happen again and made himself an ‘efficient’ sleep schedule so he could run around doing fuck shit, add to his robin shrine, and stay on honor roll bc he was even more pissed to see the gotham gazette had pictures of Robin with an on site interview credited to Vicki Vale (listen bowl cut tim had a one sided beef with vicki vale that included tim judging who gets better pics of the bats but she isn’t even aware that she’s competing with a whole ass child 😭 he’s sitting at the table with a mug of orange juice and looks at the newspaper snorts and goes ‘fucking amateur I could do better’)

Yj has just accepted that sometimes they will find tim in an air vent, on the roof, in one of their closets, or something just fucking knocked out then an alarm will go off and he’ll just get up like nothing happened but for the first couple of months they were probably concerned bc ‘I’ve never seen you sleep?? wtf are you on man’ and Tim’s confused bc ‘I slept next to you this morning wdym??’ and that’s how yj discovers tim sleeps with his eyes open

But one of the worst things about Tim’s ‘time efficient sleep schedule’ nonsense is that it fucking works he’s one of the most well rested and coherent bats even after back to back Arkham breakouts however the absolute worst thing about his sleep schedule is the likelihood of going into the cave and seeing tim staring in a daze but wide eyed yet somehow never blinking at the batcomputer with 57 tabs open on top of being unresponsive and thinking he has a fucking concussion or he’s been replaced but he’s just doing case work while muttering nonsense in his fucking sleep for some reason

im really sorry if this question ends up being repetitive: but, if not for bruce’s over reliance on dick to regulate his thoughts and emotions, why would dick grow up into feeling like he needs to repress his emotions so much and his eagerness to act as people’s support? i know youve spoken about wolfman and his altering of their relationship but if ntt is generally an accurate portrayal of an adult dick, to me this nevertheless sounds like the consequences a parent-child relationship where the responsibilities are titled too much towards the child

i suppose this could also segue into asking for recs that would help me better understand your interpretation of their relationship 👀

not repetitive at all! to me the irony of wolfman's depiction of dick lies in that it is simultaneously something you can logically ascertain from prior canon but not for the reasons actually presented by wolfman. if that makes sense. he does extra work that isn't actually necessary to help explain why dick would act the way that he does because there's plenty of reasons for it without rewriting his history with bruce to have always been suppressed and edgy and dark. to me it makes far more sense to capitalize on the inevitable disconnect between bruce and dick as an adult and a child. batman: full circle is a good example of that dichotomy (and although it was published in the early 90s it built on mike w. barr's prior understanding of the relationship between dick and bruce that he wrote into the early 80s). bruce's primary concern for the people he works with is never standards or finesse but safety. he worries constantly about others coming to harm under his watch and with a child in particular those worries were exacerbated. he ran a tight ship not because he believed dick had anything to prove but because the only way dick could keep being robin was if he went about it safely. that was obv easy for an adult to understand. but not so much for a child

to bruce these worries were practical and par for the course (as well as an expression of his love and protectiveness) but for dick their consequences formed the crux of his entire world. as a child he idolized everything about bruce. his heroism. his work ethic. his skill. his resolve. his preparedness. if dick couldn't live up to the standard he set for himself in idolizing bruce then what could he ever hope to amount to? that was the thought constantly going through his head. and it's why the bulk of his childhood and primary tenure as bruce's partner was so precariously protected by the fact that nothing bad ever really happened during it (and admittedly this framing is convenient because even chronologically speaking nothing very significant happened in their history with each other until dick left for university in 1969) (i know dixon opted to write that whole shtick with dent in his version of events but personally i never found it necessary to do so). there is enough there in the idea of dick working hard for the course of a decade to embody who he believed bruce to be that lends itself to it eventually being difficult for him to healthily express himself once the rift between them actually began to emerge

because what about bruce was there to actually see that was broken and dark before dick became an adult? i know a lot of dick fans hate batman #408 because they don't like that it enforced "retirement" upon dick (which i personally believe is a conclusion they come to because of the way batman #416 re-framed the same scene) but to me that's an inaccurate reading of the text. batman #408 was about bruce (admittedly far too belatedly) recognizing that he could not in good conscience continue to ask dick to go out and be a vigilante on what he considered to be his own "orders". he viewed dick's close call with death at the hands of the joker as something directly of his own making. although their tenure with each other had been wonderful if dick wanted to continue to be a vigilante it had to be on his own terms and of his own volition. obv that was logical to bruce and it was something dick managed to accept in the moment. but it's still hard to go from always having a purpose alongside someone you idolized to finally being entrusted entirely to forge your own

in general i like the idea of dick the adult becoming privy to all of the personal problems and conflicts that come with being a vigilante. he was conveniently shielded from a lot of those problems as a child because all he had to do was be bruce's partner and hope to live up to the title. bruce had no reason to trauma dump on him or talk about his worries and concerns at length with him because it was never supposed to be dick's job to field those worries and concerns in the first place. he was a child. the only thing bruce wanted to do was to help channel his emotions through an outlet and provide him with a home to grow up in. but when you become an adult often that dynamic shifts. you're still not responsible for fielding those worries and concerns but you can perhaps be trusted with them. that's why i like the framing in batman #408 of dick now being a man. it's a subtle way to frame the double-edged sword of adulthood. the world is in your hands now but so will be the horrors that come with it. coming to terms with the real world that bruce lives in should be hard for dick. coming to terms with who bruce is when he's not perfect should be hard. coming to terms with how quietly bruce kept his grief because he did not see fit to overwhelm a child with it should be hard. that dichotomy of dick both wanting to be bruce's brother and his son should form the crux of their conflict with each other because you can't hope to be someone's equal and someone's protected at the same time in that kind of relationship. for dick to transition into the position of equal he has to expose himself to the fact that bruce is not in fact an idol but someone irrevocably human. and that should interfere significantly with his head and his own standards for himself
