Offerings

Water, milk, teas, coffee, beer, wine, gin, tequila, vodka, fruity drinks

Meat, bread, fruits and vegetables, spices (saffron, turmeric, cinnamon, pepper), onions, grains, lettuce, chocolate, cakes and pastries. Any healing herbs and plants, or those used in medicines, would be acceptable like aloe vera, lavender, garlic, echinacea, chamomile, and ashwagandha.

Any perfume would be acceptable to her, but kyphi, frankincense and myrrh, dragonsblood, sandalwood, vanilla, cedar and catnip are all great incense, candles, or essential oils. The fire itself can also be an offering to her.

Cat toys, treats, and herbs that are safe for your cat that get them riled up like catnip. While she's not going to eat your cat treats (lets make that clear), the act of treasuring your fur baby is enough for her.

Crystals and stones like carnelian, sunstone, fire quartz, citrine, garnet, jasper, rubies, rhodonite, black tourmaline, onyx, obsidian, malachite. Any jewelry is acceptable, too.

Red linen or the color red.

Lady Bast was first seen as a lioness goddess, so figurines of lions would be acceptable, as well as figurines of cats (she became associated with cats later on). She was also associated with the ichneumon, the vultures, and the ureaus (based in epithets) so you can offer her items like these, too. Along with statues and figurines of her, the sistrum, the menat, ankh, or maat.

Devotional acts

Singing and dancing! Lady Bast has epithets that associate her with joy, drumming, and she can often be seen holding the sistrum. You can play the sistrum for her, or play other musical instruments. You may even start learning how to play one, if you don’t know how to already.

Running. Lady Bast is known as ‘the swift one,’ so running is a great devotional act. As the Eye of Re, she’s a protective deity, so exercising in general would be great.

As the Mistress of jewelry, you could take up the craft of jewelry making. Or you can learn about how to make perfumes, too and/or make them yourself.

While it wouldn’t translate this way back then, she’s known as ‘the one with many faces’ or ‘the one with many forms,’ which, historically, would translate to the ways she could be perceived- whether taking on another goddesses name as an epithet, or changing into different forms (cat, lioness, human, etc.),- nowadays, though, you could translate this to acting. This could be done by being an actual actor, voice acting, cosplaying, etc.

It’s believed that her name may mean ‘she of the ointment jar,’ though this is only speculated and the actual translation is still unknown, but you could learn about medicine, healing, or even go the route of helping others in this domain. As an enforcer of the laws of maat, taking the route of law and justice- or learning about it- could be a great devotional act, too.

Signs

Signs of Bast could include seeing her scared animals of symbols like cats, lionesses, vultures, ichneumon, cobras, the menat necklace, the sistrum, or items of royalty. She’s known to be a part of the ‘cat distribution system,’ so she may even start sending you stray cats.

You may start hearing music with a really good beat that you cannot help but sing along with and tap your foot to.

You may have better intuition about people. Cats are very intuitive, watchful, and she’s also loosely connected to water (inundation), so you may start catching on how people act around you. She’s a protective deity, as well, so those who need to be out of your life are going to see their way out if they’re not good for you.

Cats are really good at setting boundaries, too (they will bite you to let you know to leave them alone!), so you may notice you’re becoming better at setting boundaries.

Sekhmet, Goddess of war and plague

Sekhmet was a very popular Goddess in Ancient Egypt, and her priests were known to be effective doctors and healers. She is the Goddess of flame, plague, illness, justice, fertility, war, conflict, healing, anger and represents the destructive aspect of the sun. In some myths, she is her own Goddess. However, in many myths, she is an aspect of Hathor or Bastet. I personally believe she is an aspect of Hathor.

At the beginning of the year, the priests would perform a ritual. This ritual was designed to repel the "7 arrows of Sekhmet" which were 7 plagues/illnesses sent out by Her. The ritual was performed to, first and foremost, protect the King. Yet, the people of Egypt and the priests themselves also received protection. As well, Sekhmet had 7 messengers who would bring illness and bad luck to wrongdoers.

She is the wife of Ptah, mother of Nefertem, and daughter of Ra. Her most prominent myth is from "The book of the Celestial Cow" where she punishes humans threatening to kill Ra by slaughtering them. However, she loses control and begins to kill all humans. Ra, now worried, sends Thoth to stop her. She is then tricked into drinking beer dyed red to look like blood, and wakes up as Hathor, Lady of Drunkenness.

Other names given to the goddess are Aset, Aust, Eenohebis, Eset, Esu, Hesat, Iahu, Unt, Urethekau, and Werethekau.

Her name has been debated to mean “throne” or “the seat”

There are no known references to Isis before the 5th Dynasty. Starting in obscurity, she became one of the most popular Kemetic deities, with a reach far beyond Egypt. This gave her many associations over time.

She is a psychopomp, leading the dead to the afterlife, which relates to her husband Osiris.

Often given the role or title of “mourner”, she was mentioned in the rites of the dead.

While being associated with death, she was also heavily associated with healing and magic, these two associations becoming more prominent as time went on and she gained popularity.

Isis is often conflated with fellow Kemetic goddess, Hathor, who she shares a likeness with in many ways and eventually usurped power as the most popular goddess in Egypt.

In one tale, it is said that Isis tricked Ra into revealing his true name to her, and as such gave her his magical abilities.

Seen as the ideal mother, the ideal wife, and all around ideal woman of the time, Isis gained popularity amongst high society and the common folk alike.

Her primary temples were in Behbeit el-Hagar and Philae, though she was often worshipped in many other temples, even in those not dedicated to her, but on a more minor level.

Due to her many associations, she also eventually came to be seen as the patron goddess of sea-farers.

Weaving, baking, and brewing beer are associated with her as well, as is the star Sirius and the kite falcon and the rearing cobra.

Festivals of Isis in Roman times were held on December 25, January 6, and March 5. Lychnapsia has also been suggested to be a festival dedicated to Isis.

Unlike many Kemetic deities, whose clergy were required to be of the same gender as the god, men and women both served in Isis’ temples.

In Greece her cult developed into a Mystery Religion and it held strong all throughout the Mediterranean until the 6th century CE.

Isis was said to conceal herself as an old or injured woman begging for alms.

Random tangent: ‘Soldier 76′ is just as much of an image as ‘Strike Commander Morrison’ was

I think people often do Jack a huge disservice when they ‘analyze’ him by taking his image at face value. Often, to understand his thoughts, you can’t take his word for it, and have to look at what he’s feeling beneath.

Let me explain a bit. (Under a read more because I don’t want to clog up any tags with super long posts)

Why would you be able to take his word? Jack has never been able to express himself fully in his entire adult life. He had to put on the image of ‘Strike Commander Morrison’, the beacon of positivity and strict commander, for decades. Because Jack has a massive martyr complex, and he sacrificed being an authentic person because he thought that was what the world needed. The world wanted ‘Strike Commander’; he thought it couldn’t care less about ‘Jack’.

Most people seem to be aware of that, yet they still take ‘Soldier: 76′ at face value as how he actually feels, and it baffles me. No, it’s a (literal and theoretical) mask, just a different one.

Look at how he acts in the Bastet story; he’s willing to crack jokes and have fun with Ana, smiling and saying silly things, to the point that even Ana says he’s “like a child sometimes.”

But that makes sense when you think of his relationship with Ana - as his closest friend, she got to see beneath the mask of ‘Strike Commander Morrison’, and she still can see under this one, too. (Honestly, I think Ana would see right through Jack anyway; he’s not as good at hiding his emotions as he thinks he is)

In fact, image seems to be a theme in Bastet in general - note the way that Ana puts on a new mask to become a protector. It’s the same thing Jack did. He wants to help people, and he thinks this is the best way to do it. Just like before - the world needs ‘Soldier: 76′, and he thinks it couldn’t care less about ‘Jack’.

‘Soldier: 76′ is not a person. He’s a name. An image. (Also, they are so cute. I love them. A cool girl and her gay best friend.)

And to be honest, I think some of the other characters can see through him, to an extent. This interaction has always caught my eye:

What Jack says might sound condescending at first glance, but when you think about the fact that Jack's whole deal is "fighting so other people don't have to"...it makes me think he's concerned for her and doesn't like that she has to fight here. 

I think Mei picks up on that, and that’s why her response is a bit teasing. Tracer does the same with the ‘Okay, dad!’ interaction. The two of them can tell he’s more of a pushover than he lets on, no matter how desperately he tries to hide it.

But I also argue that Soldier: 76 isn’t just an image done out of necessity. I don’t think even Jack himself is aware of this, but it seems very convenient that by donning an aggressive face that shuts other people out, he doesn’t have to let others close to him. 

Some people don’t seem to consider the immense amount of trauma both the fall of Overwatch and the Swiss Base explosion would cause for him. He was surrounded by constant public degradation for months to years. He saw everything he worked for get undone largely because of negative public opinion and betrayal, and was then in a serious disaster that likely had many casualties.

After something like that happens, I doubt he feels safe letting almost anyone close at all. This mask doubly functions to protect him from getting hurt in such a horrible way again. And devoting all of his thoughts and emotion to this moral crusade means he doesn’t have to face all of the real emotional issues he has. It is, as the kids say, a cope.

None of this is to say Jack isn’t bitter or angry. And I’m sure as hell not saying he’s emotionally healthy. He needs more therapy than almost anyone else in the cast.

But so many people only give Jack a surface-level analysis, and I think that’s lame. Ironically, taking the image at face value would in-universe just prove his bad worldview. Life imitates art.

I have a headcanon that horus and bastet got together.

shortly after Ra had awakened, and Exaton lost his powers. A new enemy named Isfet had joined the dark army after he restored exaton power. Isfet has this power centuries ago he sold his soul to apopis Ra greatest enemy. Without leo in egyxos, the golden army had to ally themselves with the twilight Isles. While working together, bastet and horus started to grow close. Bastet started to fall for horus because he was so courageous and loyal and had such a bright, positive, fairly easygoing personality and kind and caring heart.

( side note: I also have a headcanon that bastet was in an arranged marriage to kira's father, and that marriage ended when kira had been born and her father tried to kill kira simply because kira was born a girl. And bastet had no problem taken out the father because she hated him. i like to think kira's father was selfish, arrogant, who was toxicly Masculent, and had a personality like sandpaper, who did not see Bastet as the warrior queen she is )

As we know, horus had already fallen for bastet because, as horus says, she is an exceptional warrior. the more time they spent together, the more their feeling for each other would grow. They both secretly consider each other kindred spirits,

which they kind of are if you really think it they are both devoted warriors, they both can get little reckless when it come to their families or anyone they care for. For Horus, it was when his mother got captured. For Bastet, it was when Kira got captured. They kind of have similar personalities and also the fact that horus was the only one to get bastet consider to not go after Exaton saying it's wouldn't be good for Kira to witness all the destruction.

After a while, the truth comes out, and they both agree to keep their relationship somewhat discreet, it not that they want want to hide their relationship from people . Bastet and horus both agree that considering the situation of exaton having his powers and a new threat on the dark army's side, keeping things discreet would be safer for everyone, more importantly, each other. I see them have such a healthy, loving relationship. I don't think they would really argue horus and bastet both look like they would use communication in the relationship. they worry about each other when other would go into battle.

Only three people know that horus and bastet are in a relationship iside, kira, and kefer.

Kira didn't really mind when she found out about her mother relationship with Horus. matter a fact, kira had a really good relationship with Horus she was pretty much just as attached to him as she is to her mother. Horus care for Kira just as much bastet does, and he is as protective over her. Kira, even once called horus Daddy, I can also see kira calling iside grandmother.

Being his mother, Iside knew that horus was in love with Bastet, and it wasn't just a crush because the way he acts towards Bastet is exactly how his father would act towards iside. Safe to say, she is very happy for her little birdie boy. Iside would be very flattered that kira thinks of her as grandmother.

Kefer was there when horus and bastet first met. being his best friends, he knew right away that horus had a crush. He was also there when they got together even though they didn't really notice him standing there. Horus is more of a brother to Kefer than his own brother, so he was ecstatic for horus. although kefer tends to playful tease horus about how he act towards Bastet.

(Side note: I picture leo doing it too when he returns to egyxos and finds out about horus's and bastet's relationship)

just want to say, Aten was at some point designated Pharoah, and Supreme God of the Universe. the notion that some cat, claiming to be a god, somehow acquiring a female human body, thru some disgusting body modification, is Aten's wife, is because alot of egyptian people are the most vile, ruthless human beings on earth.

Aten is white. He's also known as lil peep. I built a whole city for that white boy. Akhetaten. It devoted 3 years of all of egypts resources and manpower, working overtime, to build that city.

Amun, creator deity sometimes identified as a Sun god (not a god, an egyptian military experiment)

Aten, god of the Sun, the visible disc of the Sun (thee God)

Atum, the "finisher of the world" who represents the Sun as it sets (very evil guy, not a God)

Bastet, cat goddess associated with the Sun (its a fucking cat! not a God)

Hathor, mother of Horus and Ra and goddess of the Sun (couldnt turn on a stove, let alone create sunlight, not a God, tolerated, but no more) on top of this, apparently committed abominable acts

Ra (some firecracker, nothing compared to Aten, at best some divine blood) secretly a good looking white guy

Horus (dont know this person, get panic attacks every time I hear hear or see his name)

I know I mainly post Anpu and Bastet content but I love and appreciate all the Netjeru so very much. I wish I had more space and more money and more places that sold Kemetic stuff around me so I could have altar space for more of them in my home </3

Thinking about maybe beginning to keep a journal of my practice and such and devoting more time to learning and writing about more of them as a small devotional act though, but starting keeping records of anything is Hard and I always start projects like this and then don’t like how past me did stuff a little while in and want to start all over LOL. 31 Days of HelPol!!!

I saw this trend and just had to join in, even if I'm late to the party! Here's my catch-up.

DAY ONE: Who was the first deity you began worshipping? Do you still worship them now? If this has been answered before: how has your worship changed since last year?

✨️So officially, the first deity I ever worked with was Bastet. The first Hellenic God to reach out to me was Hekate. The first one I personally reached out to was Artemis. I still worship Hekate regularly and would consider her my main deity. This is my first time answering these questions, so it will be interesting to see how this answer changes next year!

DAY TWO: Which deity did you most recently start worshipping? Were you called to them or did you reach out first? Do you think there were specific reasons behind why you were drawn to them?

✨️Hekate is the most recent deity I've started worshipping. I started about 8 years ago, but she became more central to my practice about 3 years ago. In hindsight, she's been calling to me my whole life, but it wasn't until 2016 that I knew definitively knew that it was Hekate. I was dealing with a severe haunting of sorts when she introduced herself by name.

DAY THREE: How long ago did you start Hellenic Polytheism?

✨️I casually claimed the title last year! I'm still very much eclectic in my practice, but I'm primarily Hellenic.

DAY FOUR: Are there any deities you don’t currently worship but want to learn about?

✨️Apollo, Dionysius, Hestia, and Artemis specific.

DAY FIVE: How much have you bonded with your deities?

✨️I feel very bonded to them. However, with Hekate, our relationship feels different. She's distant but always there. I know that she walks with me always but she's not always reaching out.

DAY SIX: What’s one way you incorporate Hellenic Polytheism into your routine (daily, weekly, monthly, etc?)

✨️I pray daily and try to read about history/mythology daily as well. Mainly small acts of devotion. I offer purified water and incense every day.

DAY SEVEN: Are you openly a Hellenic Polytheist offline? How does being open/not being open effect your worship?

✨️I am somewhat open. I live in a very Christian and American place where people are either super conservative and religious or atheist. I don't go out of my way to hide it, but I'm also not shy to say that I'm pagan. Personally, my worship is private. It feels more meaningful to me that way. I don't really talk about what I DO, just what I believe.

DAY EIGHT: Do you have altar(s)? If you do, how do you use it? If you don’t have one, do you want one? Why/why not?

✨️I have two! One in my home studio and one in my "temple" room. The one in my temple room is deity specific, whereas the other one is mainly for magickal workings.

DAY NINE: Is there a practice that’s common among other Hellenic Polytheists that you’re skeptical about?

✨️I'm not sure if there's any Helpol-specific things, but I am skeptical about a lot of new agey concepts. More specifically, when people combine spirituality and capitalism. I don't trust people who ask for money for their insights.

DAY TEN: What’s something you’ve learned about Hellenic Polytheism that you wish you knew sooner?

✨️I feel like there is quite a lot that I still need to learn!

DAY ELEVEN: What is the clearest sign you’ve received from a deity?

✨️Once, I had a broken tooth that was infected and needed to be pulled. My insurance coverage was not ideal, and not a single dentist would help me. I called 50 dentists that day. I sat down at my altar and prayed for help. In a visionary state, my gods came to me and showed me the number 12 plus an image of the tooth breaking into tiny pieces. Twelve hours later EXACTLY some one I barely knew reached out to me on social media (I had posted about my troubles) and gave me the name of a dental office who would help me. They removed the tooth probono and told me that if I had waited any longer, it would have likely gone septic and been a serious emergency. As they removed the tooth, it accidentally crushed inside my mouth into a bunch of tiny pieces, and I just knew that the gods had put this in motion for me.

DAY TWELVE: Do you do food offerings or libations? What do you do with the food/drink after you’ve offered it?

✨️Every day, I offer fresh water. On holidays, I bake special cakes and buy special wine. I also offer portions of special meals that I make for my family.

DAY THIRTEEN: Do you write your own prayers?

✨️Sometimes! There's a lot of value in personalized prayers. I love to find historical/ancient prayers and hymns as well.

DAY FOURTEEN: Do you have any hobbies that fit any of your deities’ domains?

✨️Metal art feels applicable for cthonic gods, as metal and stones come from the ground. I also practice Magick, which is associated with Hekate.

DAY FIFTEEN: How has your worship changed you?

✨️I feel more confident in myself. It's a great source of personal power for me. I also feel more connected to nature.

DAY SIXTEEN: If you could give one piece of advice to someone who’s just starting in Helpol, what would it be?

✨️Simplicity can be powerful, don't be afraid to change rituals to fit your needs, privacy is your greatest form of protection, and I promise your gods are not mad at you.

DAY SEVENTEEN: Send out some love! Are there any Helpol blogs here on tumblr that you follow and really like?

✨️This is only my second day back on tumblr, so I don't have any specific ones in mind!

DAY EIGHTEEN: How can you best describe your relationship with each of your deities?

✨️This is going to include the Egyptian gods that I work with!

Hekate- She feels distant, yet ever present. Sometimes, she can be a bit terrifying, but her presence in my life is so deeply profound.

Hermes- He's not as strong of a presence in my life as Thoth, though they both provide a similar role. Hermes comes to me in vision often, usually during important astrological events.

Thoth- Thoth is one of the very first gods to come to me. He has a very active role in my life. He, like Hermes, comes to me in vision.

Bastet- It's funny worshipping a cat goddess along side of Hekate, but they "get along" fine! Bastet takes on a similar role to Aphroditie for me. In fact, I suspect Aphroditie has been reaching out to me through Bastet, not unlike the dynamic with Hermes/Thoth. She's very much a household spirit.

Sekmet- I only call on Sekmet for emergencies. There have been a few instances where I have needed offensive, physical protection and Sekmet has been an invaluable ally.

DAY NINETEEN: If you had to assign one song to each of the deities you worship, what songs would you choose?

DAY TWENTY: Do you have a favourite aspect of Hellenic Polytheism?

✨️I love the personal freedom and lack of dogma. I am my own authority on what I do or don't do. No one forces anything on me.

DAY TWENTY-ONE: Are there any retellings/adaptations of greek mythology that you LIKE? Why/why not?

✨️I like Lore Olympus a lot. I don't really seek out these sorts of media. I have a hard time getting into modern retellings of myths because they don't fit my head cannon haha

DAY TWENTY-TWO: Is there an aspect of Hellenic polytheism you haven’t yet gotten to try but hope to in the future? Do you have any other Helpol-related goals for next year?

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to my digital shrine of lady Artemis and lady Apollon, it is my first time creating a digital shrine, but no my first time worshipping, only worshipping Hellenic deities, still when I did it back on the day I didn’t put that much effort and devotion as I’m putting know, but witchcraft (I don’t consider myself a witch yet) and paganism as always been my interest.

ABOUT ME

My name in real life is Diana, which remind me of Artemis, and that’s why I decided to share it, but you can call me Venus or Astra, and Venus indeed is in honor of Aphrodite.

I am 18 years old and my birthday is on 11 of July, my main planets position are:

Sun: Cancer

Moon: Capricorn

Rising: Libra

I go by any pronouns, but mainly she/her and he/him. I do not anything about my sexual or gender identity yet, but I know I am queer. And maybe in the AroAce Spectrum. Mainly aromantic.

I am also Mexican so English is not my main language.

I love greek mythology and greek deities mainly, and I have never read PJO. I also love Egyptian mythology specially Isis, Bastet, Anubis, and Ra. I am learning about witchcraft but don’t like the term of being a witch on myself because I am in the closet and grew up as in a catholic family and school.

I will be worshipping the olympians, but don’t know yet about Hephaestus, because I honestly don’t feel a connection with him. And other gods that caught my attention like Hecate, Hades, Persephone, Eros, Nyx, and Morpheus. I will create digital shrine/journal for all of them, along side the one that I have physically but for the moment I will only start with this and they will have their separate blog/e-shrine.

I know they are many, but as mentioned before, I will only be worshipping them, at the start, and depending on how does it goes and my connection with the deity goes I will decide if I become a devotee of one, also, another thing that I do is that I dedicated a day to a deity, and I want to start worshipping with the deitys that have a honor day. I know Morpeus, Hekate, Athena and Hera, don’t have a day, but I feel a strong connection with them, specially Lord Morpheus <3.

NEW TAG: kemetic ideas

Simple spell that involves writing something down (either a prayer for something you'd like or something you wish to get rid of) and burn it up in honor of Sekhmet.

Literally just meditating in the middle of a storm to honor Set or reach out to Him.

There's not much on dragonflies for ancient Egypt, so I'd like to figure out what they might mean or could be.

8 ball as divination or at least a tool in helping with discernment. (Cleanse tf out of it so nothing can interfere with it!!!)

I tried to include as many deities as I could here, because I know what its like to want to find information on a deity you're interested in just to find that there are almost no modern day Kemetic content on them, and its a bit of a buzzkill.
