Three days into my current "Devilman no Uta" earworm phase and I've decided to extrude some of my intrusive thoughts. Like, why are the Devil Ear and Devil Eye given so much focus?

The verses include a segment where Devilman's powers are listed, and most of them are attacks; Devil Arrow, Devil Beam, Devil Chop, Devil Kick, Devil Cutter. That makes sense; those are the kinds of powers you expect Devilman to yell at the climax of the episode. (Depending on the genre. Most of what I know about Devilman comes from this song.)

And the Devil Wings show up, too. That also makes sense; flight is a superpower that is widely considered cool. Us overclocked apes really like the idea of walking in the sky.

But Devil Ear and Devil Eye? Super-senses aren't uncool, but they're very much secondary powers. Very few people think it's cool that Superman can hear problems from across the city; they usually think it's cool that after hearing problems, Superman can fly across the city and Superman Chop those problems.

Maybe this would make more sense if I had watched at least one episode of Devilman?

The tragic gays period of BL will forever haunt me and it wasn't even when I started getting into it that this period existed

I got a list of BL I will never read but feel a deep need to like see fix its for the narratives

Because see even tho I never read them they were really influential and inspired a lot of tropes outside of BL

They usually like charismatic and talented and overworked often like a lighter hair color but nor always and in a shit position and deal with a bunch of bs like abuse torture that you rooting for them to pull through but they either self destruct and die self destruct and become the villain

Or make it through but someone else kills them? Ya I swear that's the fault of that old BL list my I will never read you BL list.

That has list influenced other media ones that not even BL and now torments me

I look at this series like you keep ruining shit its your fault you did this to me! And I never even read you!

For reasons unknowable to man, I got Devilman no Uta stuck in my head the other day. I coped with this by listening to several different versions of Devilman no Uta, including some English covers.

The two English covers I listened to at first (Caleb Hyles and Platina Jazz) have very different translations of the lyrics. Okay, many lines are similar (including, unsurprisingly, the lyrics that were already English), but some are really, really different.

That made me wonder what the Japanese lyrics actually mean. So I looked up some other translations, both text-based and other covers.

The first thing that struck me is how many translations I found were just blatantly copying Caleb Hyles and Platina Jazz. Sometimes badly; I found a cover whose in-video subtitles insisted that デビルウィングは 空をとび translates to "Devil Wing, he's the load of the sky," presumably because the Platina Jazz cover said "he's the lord of the sky".

But I did find some translations that seem reliable. No apparent influence from the popular covers, no concessions to what sounds good in English, similarities between each other, and two even include the Japanese lyrics next to their translation, one in romaji and one in...whatever you call mixed kana and kanji.

Anyways, there are some weird differences between the actual lyrics and the two most popular translations. For instance, the bit Caleb added where the last line of each verse mentions the Devil Something doing something bad to mankind, or how neither version mentions "hell" in the Devil Ear bit even though my Gaijin Ear can hear "jigoku" clear as day.

But the weirdest thing is another thing both covers do is insist that Devilman is in control/command. Which I think was just a way to fill syllables, but it seems weird that they filled that gap in almost the same way.
