detective comics #662 (1993)
robin actually gets to do stuff, huntress joins the party, and batman has a pretty great fight with firefly that further illustrates what dire straits he's in. another pretty good but not great issue in an arc that really is greater than the sum of its parts.

i think you've done this with the worst ones already but top 5 favorite canon riddle guy designs in comics for you
god this is one of the hardest asks I've ever received. he kind of wears the same shit with small variations in most comics and it would be so much easier and this would definitely be a different like if I could include non-comic designs. but I think. I think I've done this.
5.) Tim Sale's absolutely WRETCHED Dark Victory (1999) Riddler... this is a newt of some kind. pathetic. a stuffed animal rescued from a damp parking lot.
4.) I really like the Riddler in Batman: A New Dawn (2009) because he's just Some Dude. like he's just a used car salesman. who does riddle crimes. he's not exaggeratedly ugly he's not some freakish little creature he's not trying to be a hot prettyboy like more recent Riddlers he's just hanging out making silly faces in a pretty standard outfit. he's so perfect to me.
3.) just THE classic Riddler question mark leotard with purple gloves + mask, shown here in Detective Comics Annual #8 (1995).
2.) the classic costume but with a broken arm to be twice as pathetic. these examples come from Detective Comics #662 (1993) and somewhere in Detective Comics #705-#707 (1997). if I had a nickel, etc.
1.) the fucking. frog suit. from the Batman Adventures Vol. 2 #11 (2004). this issue makes him much cuter (in a weasel way) than his animated counterpart and SOOOO expressive, so I'm very fond of him in general but this outfit in particular is everything to me. that's my scringly little blorbo bleebus in his little climbing outfit.

Helena Bertinelli/Huntress Reading List/Completionist Guide
Helena Bertinelli is the Huntress of Prime Earth. She has existed as a character since 1989, and has appeared in her own series as well as multiple other series throughout the years. Most well known for being a Bird of Prey, she has a long history that tends to be hard to track. Instead of hunting down all of the issues, this guide has every one of her appearances in the attempt to follow her chronologically, but where her movements couldn’t be followed the natural passing of time was used to follow the story.
This is both a reading list and a completionist guide. This means there will be times when the issue only has a cameo of Helena. For a casual reader this list may be a little much. If that is the case click [here] for a shorter list that can get you started on Helena.
Moving onto Content Warnings.
There will be mentions and depictions of Sexual Assault of Adults and Minors, Slavery, PTSD, and Murder. These are some of the big Content Warnings. That being said let’s get started.

Ah, yes. Remember when Zatanna's expertise was so well regarded that even Batman had to put aside his anger so he can get her opinion on something?
Source: Batman #639
This was around the time Jason Todd came back and Batman was looking to confirm his suspicions. He was also mad at Zatanna for wiping his memory during Identity Crisis, although they patched things up later during Dini's Detective Comics run.
(And yes, the Lazarus Pit originally could only revive the recently deceased. Its only much later on they were shown to be able to revive the long dead.)
Remember when Magog, whose personality is 'I'm such a huge arrogant asshole that I got kicked off the JSA-the same JSA that used to put up with Black Adam' and no longer having Dr Fate to consult, he went straight to Zatanna for mystical help?
Source: Magog #7
I thought starting with Batgirls #13 we were getting back to Zee being the magical go to person for any magical related problems. But given September's solicits, I guess not. If the above comics came out today, writers wouldn't be able to help but make it about you-know-who and somehow have him upstage Zatanna and show/treat her as inferior to him.
Bonus: Superman going to Zatanna for help in dealing with Arion:
Source: Superman #662
The Phantom Stranger appeared too in this story arc. He worked in concert with Superman and Zatanna. No attempted one up manship or edgelord bullshit. Or one character getting downgraded to show how much better the other is. Just folks who are good at their job showing how good they are at their job.

Alfred: Is this how you plan on spending your summer vacation?
Tim: [hitting a punch bag] I’m just. Working out. A little frustration.
Tim: I did all the footwork on the Firefly case and Batman’s making me sit out the bust.
Alfred: Denied the opportunity to confront a psychotic arsonist. I can only imagine your disappointment.
Tim: So while he goes for the glory…I get to watch it all on the tube.

literally going to throw up I want him to have one okayish day. ever. his own henchmen are the ones pointing the guns at him; they're tired of waiting to do the scheme du jour but Eddie is making them wait because the cops have been ignoring his stupid fucking ransom note riddle clues because there are other villains around who they actually give a shit about. AND his arm is still broken from when Bane pumped him up with venom to make him fight Batman (above). at the rate things are going it is also, probably, his birthday.
he ends up hijacking a live talk show with some fake (!!!) explosives just to make someone pay attention to him while he does riddles and ends up getting taken out like this, btw. Bruce doesn't even notice at any point that the Riddler is Riddling because he's too busy a.) fighting Firefly and b.) dying of exhaustion
all from Detective Comics #662
the 80s and early 90s are a really interesting stretch of Batman history where the Riddler is like, an uncontested iconic part of the rogues gallery and and the wider Batman mythos but hardly ever actually Does Anything. like he shows up in all the group shots and whatnot and pretty frequently gets offhand mentions like this in Detective Comics #630
but it seems like hardly anyone actually wants to do anything with him aside from Peter Milligan going absolutely off his shits in Dark City and deciding that what the Riddler really wants is to summon a giant bat demon previously called up by a cult that Thomas Jefferson belonged to. which was, you know. certainly a story!
this is going absolutely nowhere and I have nothing concrete to draw from this, I just think it's interesting! and I wonder how much the legacy of the 1966 Batman series and Frank Gorshin's extremely memorable performance lead to this sense that the Riddler definitely should be included with the likes of Catwoman, Joker, Penguin, Two-Face, etc, even if he's not actually getting a lot of play in the comics proper, kind of keeping him afloat as a character until he started picking up more narrative steam.
idk man it's just so interesting to see how these characters shift and change through the years!

Alfred: What are you doing?
Tim: Channel surfing. There’s nothing on.
Alfred: How would you know? You don’t watch anything for longer than three seconds.
Tim: You never do this?
Alfred: I tend to watch a program from its beginning until its end and then I switch the set off.

Detective Comics (1937) #662 - June 1993
“Burning Questions”
“I’m just. Working out. A little frustration.”
I think Graham Nolan is one of the better artists for Tim and in general, really. His lines are really neat and the characters actually look like people and not elongated smudges. Look at that nice close-up of Tim’s tabi boots.
This will be Tim’s first time against Riddler, but they’re an interesting pair because of their similarities in their love of patterns (and flair).
