admittedly it took me a couple rewatches to fully analyze it myself, but ppl misunderstand the rent scene soo much. farleigh was flirting with oliver as an equal, genuinely respecting him for the work hes put in to grift the cattons. until oliver ruins it by being presumptuous, trying to offer help via word of mouth despite only being there a few months, trying to place himself in a position of power and influence equal to the cattons over farleigh. playing white knight, playing white saviour, playing at being felix. at which point farleigh is completely turned off, and decides to put oliver in his place with the only weapon he has: outing oliver as a grifter. i love you, you pay my rent. this is your song as well farleigh, come finish it. if you insist. and immediately oliver has the upper hand again by ordering farleigh to humiliate himself as well, because *everyone already sees farleigh as a grifter.* even though he isnt. oliver doesnt have to insist, bc farleigh doesnt have the social leeway to resist. but he pretends otherwise bc thats what he has to do. play into the way people already see him. if you insist.

and then, still not satisfied and feeling paranoid now that hes shown his hand, oliver immediately goes and smashes a window, assaults farleigh with more power play bullshit, and *frames him for grifting* to get him thrown out of the house. when he didnt even have to fucking do that!!!! farleigh was into him as an equal, but oliver wasn't into farleigh. bc he wanted to be his idea of power. he wanted to be felix.

arguably, it was the same with venetia! she was into him until he got presumptuous, bc it shows his real grift. instead of being a poor person, pretending to be a rich person, pretending to be "real", hes an upper middle class person, pretending to be poor, desparately wanting to be his idea of wealth: powerful, generous, in control. which is so exaggerated that it shows his hand every time. and theyre bored by it, bc its what theyre already surrounded by.

I have one silly goofy rule: if you vague me, I won’t always be as transparent in return… especially when you call me a bitch. I also enjoy literary and media analysis as a hobby (there’s a reason it’s my best subject lol), so I don’t exactly mind a chance to talk on it.

Breaking: Tumblr user “Arthur The People’s Princess,” who calls Arthur a “tsundere,”’calls ME a bitch and accuses ppl who think Merlin is not a villain of “babygirlifying” him 😭😭😭 very “do as I say, not as I do.” liiiike at LEAST say it on anon 💀💀💀

But this is even funnier because… the show’s main tactic to make Arthur appear superior was by only ever contrasting him to people far worse than he is (e.g. Uther or the villagers in 5x03). But they had a second tactic, where they would “make a character ooc so their fave would seem better.” For example, the 4x03 deleted scene btwn him and Gwen (thank god they deleted it), the format and characterization in 5x01-5x03, etc. It is quite clear that they set up conversations to tell-don’t-show how grand Arthur is, even though he is surrounded by people who have the exact same standards and more. He is coddled by the narrative as a form of overcompensation for his flaws and dormant character progression. This is also influenced by his status as a rich nobleman (prince, then king) wherein a servant like Gwen believing that commoners are just as worthy as nobles means nothing, yet a king believing in this somehow makes him uniquely worthy. Credit and reward is unevenly distributed.

This “babygirlifying” of Arthur (calling him a tsundere and princess) is a pretty obvious attempt to dismiss his serious faults (the bigotry that leads him to act tyrannical towards magical peoples, continuing his father’s genocidal legacy). Because white cishet women are typically viewed as weak and harmless, comparing or associating a character with “womanly” traits/tropes can be used to give the impression of harmlessness or innocence. This is, of course, misogynistic, among other uses.

The slight against Gwaine is also very interesting, because it tends to be the type of merthur shipper that the op is, not the people who pay attention to Gwaine, who reduce him down to “clown manwhore.” But more on that later.

The show is centered on Arthur’s need to progress from a stuck-up bigot into the king who will fulfill the prophecies, bringing peace back to the five kingdoms and returning magic to the land… so why is it so difficult to understand why people might pay attention to Arthur fulfillment of (or lack thereof) the story’s structural promise? Other people possessing flaws does not negate Arthur’s flaws, which had a wide impact due to his excess of power, wealth, and reputation.

Gwaine being tentative towards magic, Morgana indulging in tyranny, and Merlin’s questionable navigation of prophecy do not in any way rescind Arthur’s central flaws. He is the one who continued to ban magic, despite Gaius making Dragoon’s innocence clear in 4x07, despite accepting the Dolma’s aid in 5x09, despite the unicorn incident in 1x11, right after a sorcerer saved his life in 1x10. And still, after a sorcerer saved his life in 1x04. After he recognized how many Druids had been slaughtered for their association with magic. These are events he knew about but chose to ignore to stay in his comfort zone (idolizing Uther and justifying his own privileges).

Also, the fact that op can only approach this topic through a merthur lens (the comments about Arthur and Gwaine both imply merthur) is more telling than any analysis I could write. Merlin and Gwaine do not exist only in relation to Arthur. We’re not the ones reducing him down to “clown manwhore,” because unlike op, we don’t see his character or connections as trivial by comparison. I know I for one have written multiple analyses on Gwaine’s characterization, traumas, and beliefs — flaws and all — because I believe there is more to him than many surface-level readings ascribe. Try looking in a mirror next time you say it.

Love that post about how there is no work life balance for the disabled. Can't stop thinking about how succinct that is.

Like, we agree that stay at home parents, despite not being paid for their work, DO in fact work very hard to sustain and care for vulnerable life. Right? In fact, that defines a lot of career paths, and not just surrounding children, but carers for adult disabled people, as well! There's multiple industries about those jobs, even.

So we agree, caring for life - especially when that life has specific and unrelenting needs, ie in the case of debilitating illness - is, in fact, WORK. It's a JOB. It's MANY types of jobs, even!

Get this: I am a full-time, UNPAID carer for both me and my partner (and often, whoever I end up living with; I have wildly unstable housing and am often homeless bc of, you guessed it, not being ✨️conventionally employed✨️). The same is true for him, too. We NEVER get to clock out. We NEVER get a day off. And we NEVER get recognized for the work that we do. People who have 0 stake in our lives CONSTANTLY feel the need to pass judgement on how hard they think we're working, which is not at all, since we have no money. Obviously, we're just fucking off and doing whatever. People just love to moralize wealth, or lack thereof.

In fact, on the days we are the sickest and feel the worst, those are the days we have to work the hardest! Days when abled people would call in sick to work are just a Tuesday for us. We don't get a break. We don't get to call in sick to life. And the payment we get is "continuing to live."

It is a full-time, 24hr per day job to manage my health as well as my boyfriend's. It takes absolutely everything I have, which is NOT 100% to begin with. (You know that other post about how "if all you have is 40% and you gave 40%, then you gave 100"? That, too.) I have nothing left over to be employed with. I have TRIED. At one point, I was working three jobs just to stay housed, and it STILL wasn't enough, not for anything, not for groceries, not for my bills, not even to keep me housed for the completion of one (1) year long lease. And it was making me sicker as well as suicidal. I had nothing to live for. I had no life outside of work. There was nothing else left to give.

Time for a fun experiment. When people ask me stupid questions like "what do you do?" I'm gonna start telling them all of this, right before whipping out the statistics on how many people identify as disabled (25% of Americans), how many have at least 1 chronic illness (60%), how HALF of disabled people are under age 65, how people are dying of cardiovascular disease younger and younger, how disabled people tend to be pigeonholed more into self-employment and service industry jobs because of our disabilities, AND how homelessness is the highest we've seen since 2007, including among Boomers. They are actually the fastest growing group of homeless Americans, apparently. It's actually not about all these entitled millennials who just don't want to work, after all! Shocking AND astounding!

And, HOO, DOG am I ready for people to absolutely HATE it! If any fellow disabled ppl want to try this fun little experiment with me lmk how it goes, would love to hear your experiences 👍

edward comes from an affluent family located in waitsfield, vermont. his father worked as an investment banker and although his mother didn’t necessarily have a “job” she was highly involved in the community. they were the type of people to flaunt their wealth, and they generally had a reputation in the town as being snooty and proud.

his childhood was cold. his parents spared no time or affection for the young boy, and due to his family’s negative reputation his social circle was relatively small. he did have the boisterous streak running through him from the start but he didn’t really become the social butterfly eddie we know and love until he went away to boarding school. 

his parents went thru a messy messy divorce when he was a teen due to his fathers infidelity and most of his commitment issues stem from them oop.

his parents also put a Lot of pressure on him to be perfect.

at private school surrounded by nothing but other privileged rich kids he quickly discovered that being overly confident and obnoxious could actually get him all of the attention he craved in his childhood, and that’s when party boy edward was born. the schools didn’t like it though and he bounced from private school to private school across the eastern seaboard. 

despite his antics he charmed most of his professors and did really well academically

after spending a gap year in europe he moved to new york city to study at columbia which is when he became suuuuper motivated. he wanted to be a nyc finance bro so bad and so he followed in his dads footsteps and studied finance. 

he took all of his partying and shoved it into short but intense weekends, which rly just made it worse. 

just before he graduated and entered the business world™ his father became the centre of a serious fraud case. it destroyed edward’s credibility and it took him years and a lot of work to get his career back on track ( he’s makin Coin now tho bbs don’t worry ). his dad is in prison but like,, don’t bring it up w edward hehe he’s sensitive abt it. 

edward is very self destructive. the issues he has forming emotional connections and caring abt ppl paired with the massive pressure he puts on himself cause him to have a general disregard for his own life, and it shows.

he desperately craves attention and admiration and uses partying as a way to get it. partying is also pretty much his only copping mechanism, and its not a healthy one. he in a v bad cycle of his high stress work week and wild weekends. 

( alcohol/smoking/drugs tw ) he is a heavy heavy drinker and also frequent user of party drugs ( coke and molly in particular ). he also was a smoker but recently quit when he started dating raph. ocassionally he’ll slip up and have a cig though. he’s also trying to party less now but with it being his only outlet for stress he def struggles with that.

bb has a looooooooooong kill list oops

v much a coffee addict, especially when he’s hungover, he has work to do after all.

can be v abrasive and argumentative, he’s v hard to get along w especially if you don’t know him well. loves a good debate hehe.

is actually a super loyal friend if he actually feels secure in the friendship, he just has a hard time trusting that ppl actually care abt him. will stick up for his friends sooo much. also just wants to make everyone have a good time. can be insensitive to ppls feelings though bc he always thinks he knows best. 

his biggest fear is becoming his father. that’s why he doesn’t do monogamous relationships bc it’s better to not try at all than to try and fail. 

he’s a vvvvvv lonely person, even when surrounded by friends : (

wears a lot of suits. if he isn’t wearing a suit he’s wearing  boat shoes, khakis, and a pastel button up bc he’s a preppy ass pos

okay so basing this off my last post of a bad boy x good girl cliche au.

marinette is the most feared kid in school. she’s got a scary aura that surrounds her and all the other kids don’t dare to ever approach her. despite she’s extremely popular due to her extremely good looks and fashion sense.

she’s still kind of course. but she’s kind in a way that she’ll help others behind their back because she doesn’t want her reputation of the scary, bad girl to be tarnished after all.

everyone’s had a crush on her at least once but since she’s unapproachable ppl just back off. those who are able to confess are immediately rejected.

she drives a motorcycle and wears all back (but fashionably our girl isn’t a designer for nothing)

enter: adrien

literal shy boy. he’s the type to follow the rules all the time and would rather study than interact with anyone.

and he’s easily embarrassed.

his family is rich but they kinda hide him from the public because they don’t want adrien to be exposed to annoying fans and the pressures of being famous (which is why he has his mother’s last name) and adrien himself prefers it that way anyway, he doesn’t want people to think he’s snobbish or greedy.

he does not like marinette at all but at the same he’s weirdly attracted to her. she’s just a very mysterious girl and he wants to know more about her but he just keeps to himself bc marinette would probably plummet him to the floor and he’s just too shy. plus she’s kinda scary.

he often avoids her in the halls tbh.

one day though in the middle of the hall, he (and a bunch of other students) watch as chloe and marinette fight.

chloe makes insulting comments towards marinette, as well insulting her family’s wealth.

and marinette is angry. but it’s different this time, everyone’s seen her angry before but now she’s seething with rage. (which isn’t a surprise). you just don’t bring family into this after all.

adrien is understandably disgusted by chloe’s words because even though he may not like marinette, you just don’t say that stuff about someone’s family.

adrien intervenes in. he knows marinette can stand her ground but with the way she’s clenching her fists, he’s afraid a physical fight will come down and honestly that’s the thing the girl needs.

he calls out chloe’s behaviour and tells her to back off, or else he’ll get her suspended. chloe is furious but reluctantly walks away.

once that happens, he immediately realizes that marinette is literally right behind him. and freezes up. because oh shit he just defended the marinette dupain-cheng.

marinette approaches him, ready to say something. but adrien has a minor freak out and starts stuttering really loud, his shyness taking over.

he mutters something incomprehensible and dashes off, afraid of interacting with marinette.

marinette is immediately interested in him. he was just so feisty and she had to admit, he was pretty cute thinking he was being intimidating and stuff, though she did appreciate him standing up for her even though he ran off (but she had to admit he was strangely hot when he was freaking out).

she’s dead set on finding out who that guy is.

eventually she find out (through alya) that he was nino’s best friend and his name was adrien.

marinette unashamedly starts flirting with adrien whenever she has the chance. even as going as far to teasingly pin adrien against the wall (tho that doesn’t happen all the time, marinette understands the boy does have some boundaries after all).

marinette is dead set on wooing adrien, much to adrien’s displeasure.

nino teases him about it constantly to which adrien just groans.

once his teacher physics asked if he’d be okay with tutoring a student who’s struggling. adrien nods, he likes teaching ppl.

till he finds out it’s marinette but he doesn’t dare object because he’s a good student.

tutoring sessions with adrien and marinette are just marinette flirting with adrien who blushes and stutters while trying to nervously explain certain physics concepts.

it’s amazing that mari manages to learn anything tbh.

adrien’s super clumsy as well. like seriously it’s come to the point that whenever he’s about to trip, marinette just swoops in and grabs him before he can fall.

adrien begrudgingly admits that marinette isn’t so bad to nino one day.

he fully admits to liking her when he’s walking home from school and somehow twists his ankle, though it’s not a huge deal and he can still walk (tho he’s gotta limp). marinette drives by in her super cool motorcycle and spots him.

she’s immediately fussy when she notices his limp and insists that she drive him home.

adrien’s a lil shocked because while he knows marinette flirts a lot she, it’s the first time she’s ever shown explicit worry over him.

after some arguing, he manages to convince her that he’ll be fine on his own (he’s p adamant on no one knowing he’s an actual rich boi) and marinette reluctantly agrees but makes him promise to text her when he gets home. so they exchange numbers.

adrien feeling slightly brave, kisses marinette’s cheek and quietly thanks her while being flustered af and proceeds to limp home.

(marinette squeals about this to alya hours later)

they manage to get closer after that and marinette formally asks him out a few weeks later to which adrien shyly says yes.

Fashion became Great for normal ppl in the edo period so it’s fitting I think, plus the border got smashed open in like uhhh 1850something so Shiny New Western Shit is a readily available detail If I Wanted Them. (I’m not saying the historical happenings went down in the same way or same timing as humans, this is just to pick a coherent set of Vibes)

Octos: thinking kinda stuck in a Sengoku vibe, leanin on the Momoyama period (so vaguely hovering around 1600). Also I want ninja octo soliders because what is a jpn period fantasy if there aren’t any fucking ninjas

-Hey Con, if you’re not having Machines then how do Octarians? Easy. Octos are skilled in. Hm. Yojutsu... is... google says witchcraft. Yeah that’s about right anyways we’ve got fucking magic here. Octolings make tentacle soldiers with their extremely powerful and advanced witchcrafts. Many legends about them basically group them in with Yokai because they are so good at magics and (are rumored to) frequently ally themselves with surrounding yokai. And it’s easier to chase off and obliterate a whole culture if you can convince your subjects that they are monsters. Whoops

u cn skip over this entire part i sorta rambled bt i’ll sum it up shortly

childhood  ↠ eli is the poster boy of a family of money and status. his mother is an ex-model and his father is partner of a prestigious law firm. he has a younger sister, whom he loves very much. ↠ his alcoholic father was abusive towards eli during his childhood, constantly reminding him how the family would be nowhere if it wasn’t for him. a physical “punishment” often followed. being a young teenager, he kept his mouth shut during any of these instances and succumbed to his dad’s drunken ways.

elias’ sister  ↠ during one abusive time of many, when elias was 16, his dad made a joke about how his sister would soon be joining high school and talking to boys. he hinted at deciding to give her a “talk” to not get distracted in school the night before, which made elias’ blood boil. from that day on he took mma fighting classes on the down low. this went on for a couple months. ↠ the night before his sister’s first day of high school, elias paid his dad a visit himself, giving him a broken nose and fractured wrist by the end of the altercation. to this day, the two don’t speak of that incident to the other two members of the family as long as elias’ father never lays a finger on his sister. His father thus sparked elias’ lack of trust in people and overprotective nature towards his sister.

major: pre-med  ↠ despite being able to defend himself and his sister now, there was still one thing about his father that irked eli incessantly. How proud he is of carrying the family on his shoulders and providing the money that he does. elias had to take this away from him, too. he had to keep his mother and sister safe and provide them with a just as comfortable — if not more — lifestyle. it was imperative for the 17 year old to one-up his father’s achievements. the only field that could possibly do that (in his opinion, anyway) was medicine. at 17, elias vowed to not stop pushing himself until he became one of the top surgeons in the country. upon earning a scholarship at lockwood, the male rushed beta delta xi, the residential scholarship fraternity of the university.

minor: art  ↠ eli always had a passion for art, ever since elementary school he’d always be sure to take one art class a year to escape from his studies. even after school, he’d go straight to his basement to work on personal pieces until his hands went numb. he believed that there was art in everything. art in joy, art in pain, art in just watching a swan in the lake and trying to recapture its aura. elias could see art in everything. ↠ after joining college however, elias placed art on the back-burner. He knew if he wanted to outdo his father, he couldn’t pursue art. It would have to be medicine. ↠ upon taking up one of the toughest majors at lockwood, elias had less and less time to pursue art nearly as much as he wanted to. despite it being his minor, he finds it difficult to find inspiration in his surroundings anymore. nothing surprises him the way they used to, and he no longer sees the beauty in things how he did when he was fourteen. elias grows doubtful that he will find a muse or spark of inspiration any time soon, but until then, he continues to focus on getting his degree with high honors.
