Week 2 : Design Thinking
After reading “Design Thinking”, I would describe design as the process of creating an efficient product while incorporating visual aesthetics to capture the eyes of potential consumers. This can be created technologically, mechanically, visually, digitally, etc.
Coming to this conclusion of what design really is, and the content we’ve learned thus far has been very interesting. Beginning the course, I did not really know the difference between design and art - and combined both into the same category. I am most familiar with graphic design from my freelance work, creating digital content that captures the viewer’s attention and relays information about their product/business - but never took a deeper dive into what design really is, instead just focused on the aesthetic of it - the colors, shapes, even psychology of design to discover what bests captures the attention of the viewer. I think that being able to understand what design actually is gives me a new respect for it, and also a new way of thinking.
“Empathy. They can imagine the world from multiple perspectives – those of colleagues, clients, end users, and customers (current and prospective). By taking a “people first” approach, design thinkers can imagine solutions that are inherently desirable and meet explicit or latent needs. Great design thinkers observe the world in minute detail. They notice things that others do not and use their insights to inspire innovation.” (HBR, Brown, 2008)
When discussing design thinking, I thought this was a very interesting concept.
I find empathy to be the most relatable way of this type of thinking, both in products I use, and in what I create.
Noticing the little things that others may miss, while being able to reach a wide audience by offering an emotional connection along with the product is something I find to be the most important aspect of design thinking.
When I started my clothing brand, empathizing with our community and promoting a lifestyle/movement/new way of thinking, while offering emotional support was more important than the product (clothing) itself. Building a community is much more valuable and important than a one-time product. There is a level of support that follows, that I believe only empathetic thinkers can truly gain, as they are most relatable. Furthermore, I don’t think you can teach someone empathy. You can learn how to be more analytical, you can work on your optimism, you can ask more questions to inspire a new direction, and you can build a team to inspire collaboration - but with empathy you either have it or you don’t, which is why I find it to be extremely valuable - especially in the design world.
I find many clothing brands are transitioning into this way of thinking, some brands that come to mind are Lonely Ghost, The Mayfair Group, and Madhappy.
These brands go above and beyond when discussing empathetic design thinking - incorporating experimentalism and collaboration as well.
I thought the readings/lecture/content this week was very insightful and offered a new perspective!

Week 1 : About Me
Hello everyone!
My name is Molly Quinn Beacom. I am in my Junior year here at UWM, majoring in DAC with a double minor in JAMS and Art and Design!
Although required, I enrolled in this course to further expand my knowledge on all things design!
I started my own clothing brand, Odd One Out - and in curating new collections and utilizing social media, I enjoy learning new things from classes like this one, and applying it to the brand. I do a little freelance graphic design too. Currently, it is mostly corporate work where I follow a template of brand guidelines and strategies, so I do not utilize as much creativity - something I look forward to doing some day soon! And when that day comes, the knowledge I gain from classes like this one will most definitely be extremely beneficial! But outside of the workforce, having these classes as a way to express that creativity through projects, etc. although educational - it is so FUN!
I had a hard time reaching this point in my educational and professional career, personal too, in art and design. Growing up I was always told that jobs focused on creativity and expression were not “legit” or “stable” jobs, instead they were hobbies. To this day, I still talk to people that believe that! I closeted the creative energy inside and did not explore those callings as they came. Instead of taking the art classes in high school knowing I wanted to do something with my creativity, I took science or math courses knowing full well I was NOT very good at those... Lol. The goal was to be a Physical Therapist at that time, stemming from my life of being an athlete and playing softball. Deep down, I knew this was something I did not want or desire to do, but it was what would make me feel like I would fit into the mold of what others would want me to do. It wasn’t until I graduated that I realized I did NOT HAVE TO DO THAT. I had a scholarship to play softball in Illinois, I was ready to study physical therapy - and with about a weeks notice I dropped out of that school and applied to UWM where I was admitted to study the creative fields I had always dreamed of. In the mix of that, there was a lot of healing, renewal, and letting go. I realized that this was my life, and I should be doing and exploring what I choose to - not basing my decisions off of the stereotypes and stigmas of society.
Now, I’ve started a clothing brand where I can express my creativity through designing apparel freely, and am hopeful that one day I will be at a design firm where I can utilize graphic design creatively, or create the brand guidelines and strategies instead of following them. As time goes on, and I surround myself with more people with the same love for art and design, and passion too - there is really no feeling like it. In a way, it feels like home!
I look forward to working with everyone! If you have read this far... Thank you! I have a tendency to be a little keyboard happy.

DCTUK Fitting: Our favourite case studies
Tumblr media
We don’t want to brag BUT over the years we have found ourselves fitting for some pretty amazing clients and we feel it is time to do a little showing off.
McDonalds HQ, London
DCTUK fitted approximately 1000m2 of Desso Essence Structure into McDonalds UK Head Office and we are Lovin’ It. Our fitters carried out this project over a bank holiday weekend and worked around the desks, office furniture, fixtures and fittings to ensure minimal disruption to the office staff located at this site. Installation began on a Friday evening and by lightning speed the project was completed by Sunday afternoon.
vimeo
Concorde Exhibition, Manchester Airport
Manchester Airport is home to the legendary Concorde G-BOAC and DCTUK were the lucky ones chosen to supply and install 1800m2 of Nouveau Connections around the most iconic and supersonic passenger jet. DCTUK worked around tight timescales and the aircraft itself (we promise we didn’t touch it) to provide the perfect flooring solution to sit beneath this iconic airliner.
vimeo
Mann Island, Liverpool
DCTUK were jumping with excitement when asked to work with Aztec Interiors on their newest project Mann Island, located by Liverpool’s iconic Albert Docks. The project required DCTUK to supply and fit 1200m2 of Desso Essence carpet tiles and 700m2 of Polyflor Arena sheet vinyl whilst working to a specified design that the architects had chosen for the floor. DCTUK worked very closely with Aztec during all stages of the fit out to ensure that the works were completed on time and to a high standard.
vimeo
iFly, Manchester
iFly Manchester reached out to DCTUK to supply and fit 90m2 of our very own Nouveau Bee Line Gunmetal. All within 1 day our fitters uplifted and disposed of the existing flooring, prepared the sub floor, applied adhesive and laid 360 tiles! Now that is a hard day's work.
vimeo
Gurdwara Sahib Sikh Temple, Woolwich
DCTUK installed 230m2 of Polyflor 2000 PUR sheet vinyl into the Gurdwara Sahib Sikh Temple in Woolwich. Before the sheet vinyl could be installed, our fitters needed to give the sub floor a little TLC. DCTUK uplifted and disposed of the existing flooring followed by plywooding the area to ensure a smooth subfloor and finally screeded the floor with Bostik Screedmaster Speed 30.
vimeo
Sometimes you've just gotta be your own cheerleader and here at DCTUK we are super proud of these projects we've completed.
Could your workplace be our next case study?
We are currently offering a whooping 15% off our nationwide fitting service.
We might be finding it difficult under the current circumstances being separated from our colleagues and business partners but there is not time like the present to transform your interior flooring with something high quality yet affordable.
Call us on 0345 222 1544 to discuss all things fitting with our lovely Fitting Adviser Kerry or simply visit our fitting page online to find out more
P.s. In light of the worldwide Coronavirus pandemic we've put into place extra precautions to ensure our fitters are protected and so are you. You can find out more here.

Week 9 Lecture & Memphis
This week’s lecture discussed the end of the future… it was less bleak that it sounds. The ‘future’ was invented by the Futurists and ‘the end of the future’ was declared by the 1970’s Punk Rock movement.
I thought it was interesting that Karen described the twin towers as the ideals of capitalism aiming to reach the future with skyscrapers, and similar to the tragic events of 9/11, those ideas were torn down at the end of the modernist era.
Personally the dense typography and unorganised hijacking of previously polished rules of the Bauhaus in the Punk Rock movement is not my favourite aesthetic, but Memphis and the playful style definitely is.
Memphis was also a postmodern design movement that originated in Milan in the 1980’s, so it was a more sophisticated parallel to the Punk Rock movement. Despite Memphis and Punk Rock both having an intense disregard for the previously outlined rules, the humour and mischief of Memphis appeals to me more. I also loved Andy’s description of Memphis being “Ikea on LSD”, it was just such a fitting description to the photo we were shown (shown below) and a playful way of describing its playful nature.

“Memphis Design.” Best Life, Best Life Editors, 9 Apr. 2019, bestlifeonline.com/1980s-home-decor/.
When I think Memphis I think all the pastel and bold colours and squiggly patterns that were great about the late 80’s into 90’s - so I did a little bit of research on the Memphis group. Beginning with Ettore Sottsass from the Bob Dylan song Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again, it was a reaction “against the status quo”
Some iconic features of the design are:
Terrazzo and laminate materials
Squiggles, (Bacterio Print 1978)
Bright Multicoloured Objects, rejecting usual shapes
An interesting fact I came across was that David Bowie collected over 400 Memphis pieces since the 80’s. And when thinking about this style of design I immediately think of the MTV logos.
Tumblr media
It is sad to me that the movement was short lived due to its lack of popularity, lasting only until 1987/88, unable to break mainstream furniture sales and existing only in a state of hype and cult following. While the group only lasted so long, the style has lived on, especially through Memphis designer Nathalie Du Pasquier who created Memphis patterned bags in 2013 and a similar clothing brand for American Apparel a year later. It is clear this movement has lasted well beyond its time.
