great design vol.8 the etch-a-sketch, low-tech brilliance

An Etch a Sketch is a remarkably simple device.   The primary components are just a small sheet of glass (plastic in modern models); a stylus controlled by two knobs; very fine aluminum powder; and tiny plastic beads. The tiny beads are mixed in with the powder to make sure the powder will continue to flow evenly and not get clumped together, as well as aid in the re-coating process when you shake the Etch a Sketch. Each knob is connected to either a horizontal or a vertical rail, which in turn is connected to a pulley system. This is all connected to the stylus via a very stiff wire.  Among other things, aluminum powder has an interesting property in that it sticks to quite a lot of things, including glass, via an electrostatic charge. So by turning an Etch a Sketch upside down and shaking, you effectively coat the glass with a thin layer of aluminum powder, which then adheres to the glass fairly well. The stylus then simply scrapes off the aluminum powder from the glass wherever it’s touching. The lines this creates are black simply because there is no light inside the Etch a Sketch except what comes through the lines you’ve created.

Invented in the mid 1950s by French electrician Andre Cassagnes (1926 - 2013) and originally coined L'Ecran Magique, the Etch-a-Sketch still maintains some of it’s mystery today. I certainly never knew how it worked as a child, it was just magic. The mystery mesmerises. The interactivity and responsiveness of the product engages children (and adults) immediately, and because it can be shaken to a clear slate, they don’t lose interest. 

This low-tech piece of kit continues to be iconic and relevant today, in world of connected electronic devices. What can this success be attributed to? What makes a great toy? Fundamentally, a toy is something which enables play; the aim is to engage kids' innate curiosity, creativity and imagination through awe-inspiring interactions. Simple as that.

In the context of my current project, which tasks us to design a predominately plastic product to make travel less stressful and more comfortable, the Etch-a-Sketch could be a winner. It is not composed of many separate pieces, and doesn’t make any mess, which lends itself perfectly to travelling. It doesn’t require battery, and could theoretically be enjoyed by a child on any form of transport at any time, all the while fostering creativity. Ingenious.
